Beer, friends and some yoga bliss Yoga was just a tad more relaxing for a group of practitioners on Feb. 6. They were involved in one of the Beer Yoga sessions held twice weekly at Big Top Brewing, which instructor Brittney Phillips (pictured) said combine the social nature of the brewery with yoga. For her, it’s an opportunity to “be outside and in the elements with beer and with friends.” “If we aren’t friends now, we will become friends by the end because we all hang out after,” she said. She noted that while some participants drink beer, others may choose to simply enjoy the yoga experience. Beer Yoga takes place at Big Top Brewing 6 p.m. on Tuesdays with Phillips, and 12:30 p.m. Sundays with Tara Egan. “We happened to be in the market for it, and we said, ‘Why not try it? It’s a cool idea,” said Manager Joe Buchmeyer.

Fun for funds
It would be hard to measure whether The Founders Golf Club Women’s Golf Association doubled the fun of last year’s Golf for the Cure event. But the club members doubled the funds raised for Breast Health Sarasota. This year, the tournament, which capped off the month of January, raised more than $51,000, nearly double last year’s total. Breast Health Sarasota Inc. is a local nonprofit, focusing on the underserved in the Sarasota community. The $51,000 in funds raised will go toward providing mammograms, breast ultrasounds, breast MRIs and breast biopsies to needy individuals in Sarasota County. The funds will also help support two mobile mammogram buses used for screenings in Newtown, according to Suellen Kaeb, chairperson of Breast Health Sarasota.
