Lido fights back
Green for go, red for stop. White, red, blue, purple and yellow to remind you you’re driving in Sarasota. The city’s newest piece of public art was hoisted into position over the weekend at the Orange Avenue roundabout at Ringling Boulevard. The 18-foot high work, created by Sarasota artist Jorge Blanco, is called Bravo! Lighting for the sculpture will be installed at a later date. Bravo! was commissioned by the city in 2016 for $150,000.
Why did the airplane cross the state? To help a group of high schoolers learning about aviation mechanics. Donated by 1-800-AskGary founder Gary Kompothecras in lieu of a costly engine overhaul, the 1982-model Mitsubishi Diamond 1 recently made its way, on the ground, from Sarasota to Eau Gallie High School in Melbourne, where it will serve students studying aviation technology. The plane was disassembled, hauled to the school, then reassembled. The students and school gathered the $16,000 needed to transport the $1 million airplane.
