Dick and Lorraine Vitale present a scholarship check to Rickey Tedesco.
Ball’s in their court Sports personality Dick Vitale took over the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota County Lee Wetherington Club with his energy and enthusiasm for learning Sept. 29 to award five college-bound students with $1,000 scholarships each. Vitale passed out signed basketballs and spoke to younger students about the importance of education. For the past two decades, Vitale has awarded 105 Boys & Girls Clubs members with scholarships totaling $105,000. “Many of these kids come from tough situations financially, but they have goals, and we want to motivate them to chase those dreams,” Vitale said.

Pop-up poetry The young poets of Booker Middle School spent a week at downtown Sarasota’s Art Ovation Hotel sharing their creativity with anyone who walked by. Wearing their berets and fingers poised over vintage manual typewriters, the students of the Dragonfly Cafe asked passers-by to select strips of paper from a jar each printed with a word. The poets then turned the chosen words into a personal poem on the spot.
