49ers otter win in Miami
Science and circus collide in the name of school outreach. SEE PAGE 1B
According to Pippi and Huck, the San Francisco 49ers will win Super Bowl LIV over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in Miami. Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s three otters, including Jane, who picked the Chiefs, put their best foot forward in picking the winner of the human sports game. Typically, manatees Hugh and Buffett make the selections, but because their habitat is under renovation, the otters took over the task. Hugh has had the better picks, going 10-2, while Buffett is 6-6. Come Feb. 2, we’ll see who was right.

SeaWorld rewards teen
Maybe you remember 14-year-old Caleb Jameson. He thought of and built those handy turtle-safe toy boxes that have popped up along the beaches of Longboat Key and Lido. The freshman at Providence Community School caught the eye of SeaWorld and Busch Gardens and was awarded with the SeaWorld & Busch Gardens Youth Environmental Excellence Award on Jan. 18. In addition to firsthand learning from a SeaWorld marine biologist, Jameson received $1,000 to support his continued work.
