SEASON SPRING 2026
A+E EDITOR’S PICKS
BY MONICA ROMAN GAGNIER
‘STARS AND STRIPES’
When: March 27-28
Where: Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall
Tickets: $35-$145
Visit: SarasotaBallet.org.
What do you get when you cross the patriotic marches of John Philip Sousa with ballet? You get “Stars and Stripes,” choreographer George Balanchine’s love letter to his adopted homeland. Sarasota Ballet will stage the large production with dancers dressed in red, white and blue costumes in honor of America’s 250th birthday in its Program Six, “Life & Liberty.” The ballet will be accompanied by the Sarasota Orchestra.
‘2 CARNIVALS’
When: April 2
Where: 7:30 p.m. at Sarasota Opera House
Tickets: $70-$85
Visit: LaMusica.org.
Sarasota-based chamber group La Musica will present Saint-Saëns’ “Carnival of the Animals” alongside “A Carnival of Endangered Wonders,” a new work by pianist and composer Michael Stephen Brown. Described by Brown as a “zoological fantasy,” the premiere will be presented in partnership with Mote Science Education Aquarium. Under artistic director and pianist Wu Han, who leads the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center along with her husband, cellist David Finckel, La Musica is pulling out the stops for its 40th anniversary season.
‘SUSANNAH’
When: March 14-28
Where: Sarasota Opera House
Tickets: $43-$179
Visit: SarasotaOpera.org.
Under the leadership of Maestro Victor DeRenzi, Sarasota Opera became the only company in the world to perform all 27 Verdi operas. But given that it’s America’s 250 birthday, we’re putting Carlisle Floyd’s American opera “Susannah” on our must-see list. Based on a Bible tale, “Susannah” is set in 1950s rural Tennessee. Often seen as a metaphor for the witch hunts of the McCarthy Era, “Susannah” premiered in 1955 at Florida State University.
2026 SARASOTA JAZZ FESTIVAL
When: March 9-14
Where: Sarasota Municipal Auditorium and other locations
Tickets: $67.30 and up
Visit: SarasotaJazzFestival.com.
Acclaimed trumpet player Terrell Stafford returns as music director of the Sarasota Jazz Festival, the annual event hosted by Jazz Club of Sarasota. Stafford kicks off the mainstage events on March 12, with a double bill featuring the Florida All State High School Jazz Band. Other mainstage headliners during the festival include the John Pizzarelli Trio, Sammy Figueroa, Arturo Sandoval Band and Michael Ross SRQ All Star Band. Don’t miss the Jazz Trolley Pub Crawl March 10.
‘FIDDLER ON THE ROOF’
When: April 11-May 24
Where: FSU Center for the Performing Arts
Tickets: $41-$99
Visit: AsoloRep.org.
At Asolo Repertory Theatre, what’s old is new again under Producing Artistic Director Peter Rothstein. We expect Rothstein to breath new life into “Fiddler on the Roof,” the feelgood musical set in a Russian village circa 1900. Famous from both stage and screen, “Fiddler” follows Tevye’s efforts to find husbands for his daughters. The show’s most memorable song, “If I Were a Rich Man,” still resonates today.

17TH ANNUAL SIGNATURE LUNCHEON
Benefiting: Tidewell Foundation
When: 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 6
Where: The RitzCarlton, Sarasota Tickets: $200
Visit: TidewellFoundation.org
The Signature Luncheon always inspires with its marquee speaker, and this year’s no different, with former star quarterback and NFL analyst Joe Theismann. After his career ended abruptly, Theismann created a second act. His words will no doubt lend wisdom to all who attend.
CIRQUE VOGUE FASHION SHOW
Benefiting: Circus Arts Conservatory
When: 11 a.m. Thursday, May 14
Where: Circus Arts Conservatory Tickets: $175
Visit: CircusArts.org
A new, boozy Champagne luncheon and fashion show? As the folks at the Circus Arts Conservatory say, “Bling it On!” This event promises “an immersive elevated fusion of fashion and the artistry of circus performance.” Sounds like Sarasota crowd-pleaser to us. BEAUX ARTS BALL
Benefiting: Art Center Sarasota
When: 6 p.m.
Saturday, March 21
Where: Sarasota Municipal Auditorium
Tickets: $300 Visit: ArtSarasota. org.
It’s been a long time, Sarasota, but Art Center is bringing back the Beaux Arts Ball, and we’re ready to see what you’ve got. At one time, the ball was THE annual event in town, complete with resplendent décor and costumes (even prizes!). We can’t wait to see what fun surprises its resurgence brings.
DICE, DIAMONDS & DENIM CASINO NIGHT
Benefiting: Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee
When: 7 p.m. March 28
Where: The Ora Tickets: $150 Visit: JFedSRQ.org.
In another fresh event on the scene, the Jewish Federation is hosting a casino night that marries a bit of gambling with a bit of denim and a bit of glam. It may just be the perfect antidote to a couple of months packed with galas, tuxes and evening gowns.
CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION: 100 YEARS OF THE SARASOTA OPERA HOUSE
Benefiting: Sarasota Opera When: 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 11
Where: Sarasota Opera House and Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Tickets: $500 includes concert and dinner Visit: SarasotaOpera. org.
As events go, this one’s a special edition. To honor the centennial of the Sarasota Opera House, the Sarasota Opera will treat guests to — what else? — fabulous opera at the place it’s honoring, followed by a dinner at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. As with everything opera, it’s sure to be an elegant and memorable evening.

FLORENCE AND THE SPICE BOYS
Never ordinary, always extraordinary, and with a nod to Middle Eastern Street Food, people have been raving about Florence and the Spice Boys since their food truck rolled up in 2019. And, now with two locations, foodies can easily experience visually stunning dishes that pack a punch of flavor. The menu features smaller plates great for sharing along with craft cocktails and mocktails. Fan favorite: the tumeric fried chicken sandwich with Okonomi sauce and Kewpie mayo.
