Brian Wigglesworth, the creator of the Siesta Key Crystal Classic, put together a new sand creation on Siesta Key recently — a sculpture of the health care workers, firefighters and other essential workers active during the pandemic. Wigglesworth is friends with the owner of the Patriot Pier property and often creates sculptures for tourists. “I just felt a sculpture to honor and say thanks to our essential workers would be a perfect subject matter,” Wigglesworth said. Wigglesworth planned to have a police officer and mail carrier as part of the sculpture, but an arriving storm cut his time short.

Sure, there’s a pandemic on, and we’re all a little tired and cranky. But maybe a walk, run or ride over the Ringling Bridge would help nudge Sarasota out of the ranks of the also-rans in a recent list of Florida cities’ fitness level. Sarasota came in at No. 132 of 300. But hey, Siesta Key checked in at 77th. Barbend.com looked at walkability, exercise opportunities, access to healthy food, air pollution, water quality and other factors. No. 1? Pelican Bay, near Naples. Port St. Lucie on the east coast was last.
