Galloping into retirement Sarasota County bids farewell to one of its finest — horses that is. After three years of service, Leo, a 15-year-old Hanoverian bay gelding, retired on June 12 from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office because of the onset of shivers, a neuromuscular disorder. Leo will spend the rest of his days at Mill Creek Farm, an equine sanctuary in Alachua, where he will be able to gallop and play with fellow retired police horses.

Diving into summer reading This summer Brentwood Elementary School students are diving into reading as part of the Summer Learning Academy’s initiative to combat the summer slide. Rising first graders are paired with mentors who then help the students with educational and other skills. The mentors and students meet each Tuesday in June. At the end of each session, the students are given the book they read to take home. At the final session, students will receive a bag with books, a reading light, journals, markers and a tiny toy gecko.
