Remember to honor vets
With no Veterans Day parade this year, a short ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at J.D. Hamel Park will honor the contributions made by men and women in uniform. Jan Hamel Solomon will deliver a prayer at the park, just as members of her family have done since 1960 in Sarasota. Honored guests and elected officials will be present. Veterans awards will be presented, and the public is welcome to attend and bring lawn chairs. J.D. Hamel Park is at the corner of Main Street and South Gulfstream Avenue.

Butterfly Garden
Beyond the spooks and scares that were found on Halloween, Sarasota locals experienced something more beautiful Oct. 31 — the opening of a Butterfly House at the Historic Spanish Point. Marie Selby Botanical Gardens staff decided a new butterfly house — which is full of flowers and countless butterfly species — would be a good fit for its Historic Spanish Point location. The temporary butterfly house that was part of Selby Garden’s “Salvador Dalí: Gardens of the Mind” had been a success. Species in the Butterfly House include the cloudless sulfur, giant swallowtail, Gulf fritillary, monarch, orangebarred sulphur and zebra longwing.
