Kiwanis set to award scholarships
Former vice mayor advocated for a better Longboat Key, and a whole lot more.
Breakfast and a bet on the future are coming next week when Kiwanis Club of Longboat Key will grant 12 students a $2,500 scholarship each. The 7:30 a.m., Aug. 1 event will be held in the Longboat Key Club’s Harbourside Ballroom. “We try to make a significant difference,” said Kiwanis Club Scholarship Chairwoman Susan Phillips (above) . “All of them are just super bright.”

Boring work fires up
The Longboat Key Public Tennis Center hopes to cause a “racquet” this weekend in Orlando. The team’s nine women compete at this weekend’s USTA 40 and over sectionals, the first appearance at the tournament for this roster, team member Fanny Younger said. The team usually plays on clay but will make the switch to hard courts for the competition. Nonetheless, the players going are excited to take on the challenge, Younger said. The tournament will take place Saturday through Monday.
