Hurricane Sally blew past Florida with a few rainstorms, but she did take a souvenir: the flag at Twin Shores. Resident John Langwig put out a Lost Flag call recently in the hopes of bringing the fairly new flag back home after it was apparently torn from its pole. He misses seeing it flying from his kitchen window. But Twin Shores won’t be lacking the stars and stripes for long. A few folks are ready to donate, and Langwig said they will procure a new one soon.
Town’s census response low A court might ultimately decide whether counting for the 2020 U.S. census is finished or not, but Longboat Key’s self-response rate is still below Florida’s average. Originally cut off Sept. 30, counting was extended by a federal judge until Oct. 31, though that decision was appealed. Longboat Key’s selfresponse rate was 37.8%, while Florida’s is 63.1%. That’s one of the big reasons census workers have been knocking on island doors lately, trying to wring out more information about residents.
