FDOT gets serious about osprey nests
Dishing
This time, they mean it. Season after season, nesting ospreys have confounded the Florida Department of Transportation’s best efforts to keep the southbound drawbridge signal clear on the New Pass Bridge. Previous nests have blocked drivers’ view of the red and green lights and were removed, only to be rebuilt by the persistent raptors. This season, FDOT stepped up its game with an Off-Sprey raptor deterrent, installed in early January, to keep the signal clear. When the nesting season ends, and hurricane season approaches, the device will be removed to avoid possible damage.

Documentary about Tom Sung gets Oscar nod Longboat Key resident Tom Sung is heading to the Oscars. Well, the movie about him is, anyway. “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail,” a documentary about Sung, was nominated for “Best Documentary Feature” in this year’s Academy Awards competition. The movie focuses on Sung, who founded Abacus Federal Savings in New York. In 2010, Manhattan prosecutors charged the bank and 11 former employees with mortgage fraud. And after five years, $10 million and a trial, a New York City jury dismissed all the charges.
