What is a birth plan?
Birth plans help us to meet patients’ wishes as much as possible. Some patients firmly state their intentions. Others use the plan as a “wish list.” With safety as the priority, even when circumstances change, we can still try to accommodate the patient’s wishes. The birth plan also helps such as allergies or a special diet.
What type of info is included?
A list of individuals to be there for support during labor may be included, pain relief options, preferred positions for labor and/or pushing for delayed cord clamping*, feeding or medication preferences for the baby.
Should I involve my doctor?
Discussing plans with your provider should happen at every prenatal visit so that your entire healthcare team is on board when it comes to delivery.
When should I finalize my plan?
I usually meet with patients between 30 and 32 weeks of pregnancy when we have a good idea of how the pregnancy is going and can best anticipate and discuss possibilities. Patients also have the right to change their mind about preferences at any time.
What if my plan isn’t as expected?
During labor and delivery, it’s sometimes necessary for patients and their healthcare team to make decisions on a minute-to-minute basis. Open communication about expectations and the realities of labor and delivery usually helps to curb the disappointment a patient may have when the written birth plan does not unfold exactly as the patient imagined.
“The most important thing is for mom to be happy and healthy,” says Coney.

Dental hygienists have seen and heard it all from patients and their teeth. We asked them to talk teeth and share some surprising truths to answer your most common questions.
Can I overbrush my teeth?
Yes! You should brush your teeth in a circular motion that covers some area of the gums and all of the exposed tooth surface. Brushing in an aggressive back and forth can lead to recession and sensitivity over the years. It’s like taking sandpaper to your gums for a lifetime!
Do I need to floss every day? Does it matter if I use a waterpik, traditional floss or plackers?
Yes, you really do. Food turns into bacteria in the mouth and then hides down in the gums, but flossing removes what’s left after brushing and prevents infection and gum disease from starting. A waterpik is good to use for those with moderate dental work from crowns and bridges or removable dentures but get the portable kind because these make a mess. However, pass on the plackers! They are traditionally used only to remove food debris from in-between the teeth and not down into the gums where all the bacteria sit. Traditional floss is the best!
Are mouthwash products effective and should I use before or after brushing?
Yes, mouthwash is a must. New technology has allowed companies to add essential oils into the wash
to aid with plaque removal/ plaque prevention. Use mouthwash always AFTER brushing. It aids in the prevention of plaque accumulation around the gumline, preventing gingivitis and further gum irritation.
Why do my gums bleed?
Your gums can bleed for several reasons, but the number one reason is bacterial infection. Poor hygiene,
periodontal disease, vitamin deficiency, hormonal changes, certain medications, and smoking to name a few.
