A pup star is born
Held by Southeastern Guide Dog’s Leslie Shepard, a yellow labrador puppy named Pip (above) made her world debut Oct. 24 at Lakewood Ranch Cinemas. The guide dog school premiered its four-minute animated short film, “Pip,” the story of a pup training to be a guide dog, and introduced the real-life Pip to the crowd. The Pip campaign is to raise funds and awareness for the organization. You can view the film and follow the progress of Pip the real pup at pipfilm.com.

Cool invention
Michael Afanasiev, a Manatee Technical College HVAC instructor, has earned the technical school’s first U.S. patent. Afanasiev invented the Air Conditioner Educational Demonstration System and Method of Operation. A MTC news release said the training simulator represents the entire A/C refrigeration cycle. In the release, Afanasiev said most training simulators that accomplish the same task cost between $25,000 to $35,000. His costs about $100 to make.
