Grant might plant seeds Members of the Gardeners Out East club in Lakewood Ranch dug up good news for Vets2Success founder Bryan Jacobs. Club President Karen Eckert (above with Jacobs) presented him with a $1,000 grant during the club’s May 13 meeting. Vets2Success is a nonprofit that supports homeless and displaced veterans through cooking, brewing and gardening programs. As part of that effort, Vets2Success now is growing hydroponic vegetables and fruits at Sweetgrass Farms in East County.

Bittersweet farewell Outgoing Braden River Elementary principal Hayley Rio was sent off with music, rocks and plenty of tears. Students surprised Rio at an assembly with two songs they prepared just for her, a video from students talking about the things they loved and the things they’ll miss about her, and each student decorated a rock and put them in pails for Rio to carry with her as memories of her time spent at the school. Rio could barely hold back her tears as she addressed the students. “As much as I’m excited to go somewhere new, I’m really going to miss you guys,” she said.
