Lifetime of service U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan on Oct. 9 celebrated the achievements of retired firefighter and retired East Manatee Fire Rescue District Commissioner Don O’Leary (above) with the 2019 congressional “Career Service” award. O’Leary spent 30 years with the New York City Fire Department before retiring to Florida and beginning to advocate for fire safety in Lakewood Ranch. “He’s one of a kind,” Buchanan said. “It’s incredible, his service, not just to the region but the country.”

Dogs benefit from beauty treatments For one day, Elizabeth Callahan, the owner of Sarasota’s SkinSmart Dermatology, allowed her business to go to the dogs. Callahan (above) donated $12,477 of the services she provided Sept. 24 to Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue to take care of dogs that were rescued from the Bahamas following Hurricane Dorian. At Callahan’s office that day, Nate’s Honor Animal Rescue workers passed out information about the medical care the dogs would receive. “I wanted to use my skills to raise money in the shortest and most effective way possible in order to help the dogs from the Bahamas,” Callahan said.
