Creating Competitive Differences
As I’ve been making my rounds at different industry events recently, one of the most popular topics of discussion seems to be Amazon and how it is impacting the way consumers shop.
There is no doubt Amazon has changed so many things about retail and has had a major impact on many retail segments. However, to this point, the paint and home improvement categories have largely been spared the focus of Amazon’s attention.
This, however, could certainly change in the future as Amazon and other online retailers, such as online paint company clare.com, look at ways to service the home improvement and decor markets.
So, how do independent paint and decorating retailers prepare for this (or any) kind of competition?
The answer, while simple, isn’t always easy. You look for ways to make your business unique.
Simple, right? Well the truth is, it can be incredibly challenging to create a unique retail environment when you offer the same basic products and services that many other retailers offer.
Curating the right mix of products, services and market-focused niche assortments are all great steps to creating a truly unique retail offering.
Even with similar assortments though, there are ways you can make your business stand out. We cover one way to do that in this month’s issue where we examine store services.
Curating the right mix of products, services and market-focused niche assortments are all great steps to creating a truly unique retail offering.
Then when you add things like community events, high-touch service and a comfortable, inviting atmosphere, you can create a retail format that is much better insulated from any form of competition.
Step by step, each of these features sounds simple to achieve, but sometimes the hardest part is realizing that your current model may need to evolve to meet the changing needs of today’s consumer.
