WATCHES

Festive Finesse

NOMOS Glash端tte has unveiled two beautiful new mechanical timepieces just in time for the festive season offering up the opportunity to surprise that special someone with a gift that will last a lifetime. One of these festive models measures 38 millimeters in diameter, while the other is just 33 millimeters across, making it suitable for smaller wrists. Both of these watches feature the same midnight blue dial with gold hands and indexes and are handcrafted with precision and care by the skilled watchmakers of NOMOS Glash端tte. While perfect for celebrating the most wonderful time of the year, the two models are also suitable for daily wear and every season. Orion 38 midnight blue and Orion 33 midnight blue are the two newest members of the iconic Orion family. All watches from this family feature domed sapphire crystal glass on both sides that gives them both invisible strength and visible beauty. The case is elegantly curved and the lugs taper around the wrist for a seamless fit. Initially introduced in 1992, Orion was one of the first watches to be developed by NOMOS Glash端tte and continues to be a success today. Now Orion is ready for the festivities to begin. Both new versions feature manual winding thanks to the Alpha caliber, the most frequently made in-house movement

from NOMOS Glash端tte, for excellent precision and value. The midnight blue dial is deeper than the starry winter sky, while the slim-line cases are stunningly slender, just like all watches in the NOMOS collection. The perfect pairing for one of the most elegant holiday seasons yet. Both NOMOS watches are available from mid-November at select retailers and nomos-glashuette.com.

Excalibur Quatuor Carbon The brand that dares to be rare has hit new heights of creative transformation with the launch of the fierce dark knight to the hyperwatch segment. Enter the all-black Excalibur Quatuor Carbon, the ultimate paradox between a ‘heavyweight’ movement and a ‘featherlight’ ultra-modern timepiece. The Roger Dubuis ‘disruptive materials and progressive complications’ ethos has enabled it to acquire an international reputation as an avant-garde Maison perpetually on the lookout for pioneering technical developments and creative aesthetic options - as well as unexpected combinations of the two. Among other world firsts, this incubator of inventiveness and unparalleled technical prowess has given rise to the Quatuor calibre, Roger Dubuis’ revolutionary response to the challenges of gravity. Stemming from seven years of research and development and protected by two patents, the Excalibur Quatuor with its four sprung balances set at 45-degree angles proudly symbolises the mechanical magic of one of the most innovative 21st century Manufactures. Today, Roger Dubuis remains one of the only

Maisons capable of mastering such a complicated calibre, entirely in keeping with the powerful movements and equally strong aesthetic codes of the Excalibur collection. Since its creation in 2013, the robustly designed Excalibur Quatuor has rocked the watchmaking world in gold, titanium and silicon, while 2017 saw a world premiere version in state-ofthe-art CarTech Micro-Melt BioDur CCMTM. Today, the brand that dares to be different catapults innovation to the next level by combining this iconic timepiece with a disruptive multi-layer carbon. Not to mention the fact that its dark good look comes with the added benefit of the bantam-weight nature of carbon which is over 60 per cent lighter than gold. The aggressive design of each case in this eight-piece limited edition is remarkable due to the manner in which the carbon is cut. Black, almost weightless and radiating an aura of effortless strength, the all-new Roger Dubuis Excalibur Quatuor Carbon is living proof of what happens when the true force of gravity is leveraged by a Manufacture renowned for mastering incredible technology.

ARMIN STROM

DOUBLE DOUBLETIME TIME Dual Time Resonance: Masterpiece 1 by ARMIN STROM

The Dual Time Resonance by Armin Strom is a horological Masterpiece: a chef-d’oeuvre combining the practicality of two completely independent time indications with the increased precision of two independent movements in resonance. This timepiece launches the Swiss manufacture’s new flagship Masterpiece collection, which highlights the Armin Storm’s extraordinary technical and artistic abilities. Masterpiece 1 Dual Time Resonance highlights the wonder of resonance. Two independent movements sit side-by-side in a distinctive oval case, their regulators wedded by Armin Strom’s patented Resonance Clutch Spring performing a continually horological two-step between the dual eye-catching counteroscillating balances. The Resonance Clutch Spring is the key to Armin Strom’s mastery of resonance, and is the result of threeyears of intensive research and development. Two independent movements display two independent time zones - not simply one movement with two displays. Armin Strom Co-Founder and technical director Claude Greisler explains, “Developing a perpetual calendar or tourbillon would have been far easier than the years we spent calculating and validating the Resonance Clutch Springs, it was uncharted territory.” Independent movements enable the Dual Time Resonance to indicate GMT, or a second time zone, as well as a function used as a timer or countdown. Power reserve indicators on each of the hand-guilloche dials and a 24-hour indication at 6 o’clock complete the indications. While it has been long known that resonance in

watch and clock movements with synchronized coupled oscillators improves accuracy by averaging slight differences in the precision of each movement and in wristwatches minimises adverse effects of shocks on precision. Less known is that resonance also conserves energy, vibrational energy that is normally lost through the supports of the regulator is conserved in the system. Armin Strom’s laboratory testing has revealed gains in precision of 15-20% for two COSC chronometer-level regulated movements placed in resonance. “Form follows function” could have been written for the Dual Time Resonance: two movements side by side (rather than stacked vertically) naturally led to the oval-shaped case, while the increased space afforded by the movements in this configuration allowed for two barrels per movement and a longer power reserve. Gazing through the display back at all four barrels winding simultaneously is as mesmerising as the ballet of the dual regulators on the dial. The Armin Strom Masterpiece 1 Dual Time Resonance launches in a limited edition of 8 pieces in Grade 5 titanium.

MR PORTER partners with Zenith and Bamford Watch Department for an exclusive limited edition timepiece.

The award-winning online platform for men’s style, has announced its partnership with Swiss fine-watch manufacturer Zenith and British watch customiser Bamford Watch Department to create an exclusive 25-piece limited-edition watch, available for sale on 15 November. Mr George Bamford and his team worked alongside Zenith in the design of the watch, which was then entirely developed and produced in-house at Zenith’s Manufacture. Co-creating a project and product of this nature is a first for all three partners in this undertaking. Based on the Zenith Heritage 146 model, the watch takes cues from several of the brand’s historical design elements. These subtle touches include the tachymeter inspired by a 1971 El Primero, a red second hand, aesthetic reminders of a vintage chronograph case and a centric sub-dial rings hark back to the old Zenith recorder telltales and motion detecting clock. Its unique “Solar Blue” dial is framed by a 38mm stainless steel case, fitted with a navy blue Alcantara strap featuring white stitching designed to complement the white dial markings. Combining all of these various touchpoints, Zenith, Bamford Watch Department and Mr Porter have created a watch that is both familiar and yet altogether modern and new. Each of these limited-edition watches will feature a special open case-back engraved and individually numbered one to 25. “This is a first for Mr Porter, working together with both Zenith and Bamford Watch Department, and we are thrilled with the result. Zenith’s approach to modern day watch-making, alongside George Bamford’s eye for contemporary customisation, has created a unique timepiece our customers and readers are sure to

enjoy and appreciate. By diving into Zenith’s archive for technical references, this collaboration showcases genuine originality and storytelling - which certainly will make this watch special for years to come.” Mr Toby Bateman, Managing Director, Mr Porter. “The relationship established last year with the customisation specialist Bamford Watch Department (BWD) has already confirmed the wide range of creative possibilities provided by such cooperation, and this is now the first time that we are producing a BWD design entirely in-house. In 2015, Zenith also became the first Swiss fine-watch brand available on mrporter.com and this world-class online retail destination needs no introduction. The result of this three-way endeavour is liable to strike a chord with stylish men around the globe.” Mr Julien Tornare, CEO, Zenith.

A city of unconventional and innovative architecture; bold urban planning, a focus on sustainability, space and light, in combination with Danish attention to detail, has placed Copenhagen as a world leading city in contemporary architecture. Increasing their spectacle, many of these striking buildings sit on the waterfront: Copenhagen Opera House - considered one of the most modern opera buildings in the world, the Royal Library - known as the black diamond for its lop sided cubic shape and deep black façade, and Copenhagen International school - which integrates one of the city’s largest solar panels into a building - all sit on the waterfront. The Maritime Museum of Denmark too is constructed in the shape of an enormous ship, and is built under the ground like an old dry dock, and the world famous housing/shopping block 8 house was awarded winner of the Housing category at the World Architecture Festival 2011 for using architectural affordance to promote individual and community wellness in housing design. visitcopenhagen.com | Images Š Wonderful Copenhagen

NIMB HOTEL

It’s not just the new that makes this a spectacular city to visit. Copenhagen has a wealth of history and boasts a multitude of sites including the second oldest amusement park in the world, the fascinating Tivoli Gardens. 2018 marks the 175th anniversary of Copenhagen’s magical Tivoli Gardens. Providing inspiration for The Nightingale by Hans Christian Andersen, and even Walt Disney’s world-famous

amusement park, the gardens were founded in 1843 by Georg Carstensen. Boasting musicals, concerts, ballet, the enchanting gardens are one of the many highlights of the dynamic city making there no better place to stay than in the luxury boutique Nimb Hotel which offers direct access into the gardens for guests. With history dating back to 1909, The Nimb family were originally tenants at the Tivoli restaurant Divan 2 and were subsequently offered the chance to run the main restaurant in the new bazar building that was constructed after the city moved Bernstorffsgade to the west. Today, the stunning ornamental Moorish styled palace is named after the restaurateur who established the reputation of the place and underwent a major renovation project before reopening in 2008 as a luxury hotel and several restaurants. Just last year, even more work was done to extend the hotel and create the adjoining Tivoli Food Hall, creating a brand new allyear round venue celebrating cuisines from around the world.

TRAVEL

The latest renovation has seen the addition of 21 new suites, taking the hotel’s total from 17 to 38, each individually designed by expert René Jasper Thomsen with hand-picked art adorned on the walls, carefully selected antiques on display, and a private balcony facing the gardens. Additionally, there is also a brand-new rooftop pool for guests to enjoy, offering fantastic views and delicious cocktails. Nimb Roof was only opened this summer, and the hotel has already enjoyed the opening of a brand-new spa and wellness centre since. Offering a range of treatments including Nimb’s ‘quick fix massage’, Yoga massage, private mediation consultations, body wraps, and signature facial, as well as indulgent beauty treatments, the new spa is a welcome addition to the already vibrant hotel. The 300m2 oasis comprises of a Hammam and steam area, beautiful changing rooms, a relaxation and treatment area, and a fullyequipped state of the art gym. Personal training sessions are also available as is access to cardio-training in a specially designed 34-degree hot room is available: shown to increase calories and leave a wonderfully detoxed sensation. With regard to the hotel’s interiors, the rooms are just as impressive as the striking Venetian marble façade. Featuring an elegant monochrome colour scheme, the sleek hotel boasts fine Italian marble stucco flooring, crystal chandeliers, Danish antiquities and spinning wheels hung on walls, as well as lots of greenery and floral displays. The hotel has a colourful history and was once home to an in-house chocolate factory and dairy, meaning that there is a tale to be told through every turn. Each room has been designed with the motto ‘feels like home’ at the forefront, something that the Danish do so well through their philosophy of ‘Hygge’- a term that can be applied to special moments, people, or experiences that evoke a sense of cosiness and/or cute charm. All of the rooms at the Nimb, whatever their size have been designed to feel like an elegant home away from home with large double sinks, huge bath tubs, B&O sound systems, unusual art, and generous toiletries from bath bombs to sheet masks. A real relaxing haven after a heavy day of sightseeing and smorgasbords.

Back into the main hotel, foodie’s will not disappointed. The award-winning luxury Hotel offers the greatest variety of restaurants under the same roof of any hotel in the world. There are no less than seven independent restaurants designed to suit all tastes. From the airy brasserie, that serves up a fantastic breakfast with dishes that are both beautifully presented and executed; to the garden restaurant that provides the perfect location for an evening concert at Tivoli. There’s also an indulgent cake shop ‘cakenhagen’ and the Tivoli food hall, featuring 16 different food stands including Gorm’s Pizza - a Copenhagen favourite. To enquire about room availability or learn more about the hotel, please visit nimb.dk. Double rooms at Nimb Hotel start from 2,800DKK (approx. £335) per night.

Portugal’s Best Kept Secret

Just under an hour’s drive from Lisbon lies the picturesque coastline town of Setúbal where visitors can take a short ferry transfer across to the white sand beaches of TROIA. A true paradise, TROIA is home to 18km of white sandy beaches, dunes and lush green pine forests making it the perfect location of a short getaway or even a holiday home. Thanks to the peninsula’s unique location, the destination is not dissimilar to a private island, offering a serene and exclusive feel so you can feel slightly smug knowing you have found this Southern European gem. Heavily influenced by the surrounding nature in both design of the homes and the many sculptures that surround the resort, TROIA is home to more than 600 species of flora and fauna that is preserved and protected by strict policies and conservation initiatives. You could easily spend your entire holiday, or several months of the year, in the peninsula. With a lovely community, you can make your experience as private or as social as you like. On the busy marina, you can catch a free ferry back over to Setubal to discover the colourful food market, enjoy a meal at fresh seafood restaurant El Cristo, or even visit the large Casino.

Other activities suitable for the entire family include worldclass golf, tennis, football, sailing, exploring the Roman Ruins, swimming with the local bottlenose dolphins, walking through the local orange groves and olive oil trees, creating your own signature ceramic tiles and much more.

Troia Resort, Troia Peninsula, Portugal

TRAVEL

You’ll never be bored and with beautiful weather year-round compared to the dismal winter of the UK, your body will appreciate the break too. The summer months of June, July, August and September enjoy an average temperature of around 30 degrees. A colony of 28 bottlenose dolphins reside year-round in the

River Sado and is one of the very few in all of Europe to have an estuary as its home. TROIA has been integral in the conservation via several projects. There are half immersed prairies covered in sea plants, which are nurseries and where emblematic species, like seahorses, cuttlefish and clams are found. Along the river Sado, upstream from the TROIA Marina, the typical white sandy beach gives way to a pebble beach, with rich biodiversity, where guests can find sea carrots, anemones, crabs, shrimp, whelks, sea snails, oysters, sea urchins and starfish. It’s the perfect experience for adults and children alike, exploring and learning more about marine life and the all-important conservation for the future. The specialised boat trips out to find the dolphins are equally popular and allow visitors to admire the dolphins in their natural home, respecting their habitat. Bird tours are also available as the nearby Sado estuary, the second largest estuary in Portugal, is an area of enormous natural wealth and biodiversity. Though the wetland area has great importance as a wintering site and migration stop-off point, it also holds important breeding populations of the Purple Heron, Marsh Harrier, Black-winged Stilt and Little Tern. The Nature Reserve bird list includes more than 250 species.

TROIA Also highly interesting to the area are the Roman Ruins. Dating back to 1st century AD, you can journey through the last six centuries and learn more about the Roman origins of TROIA, the ‘Pompeii of Setúbal’, as Hans Christian Andersen called it, which was designed on the scale of the Empire and is the largest known fish-salting facility in the Roman world. There is an information exhibition in the TROIA Golf Clubhouse and guests are encouraged to go an explore the nearby ruins. Speaking of the golf course, TROIA’s Golf Championship Course is an 18-hole and 72 parcourse that stretches 6,317 metres along the beach, with magnificent views over the sea. Designed by the renowned North American golf architect Robert Trent Jones Senior, TROIA was elected in 2011 by Rolex as one of the best golf courses in the world and is listed in The Rolex World’s Top 1,000 Golf Courses guide. In 2017, Golf World magazine considered TROIA to be the 20th best golf course in continental Europe, thus becoming part of the 2017 list of ‘Top 100 Golf Resorts in Continental Europe.’ Impressive if you are looking for a golfing break with friends or colleagues alike. Football fanatics will be interested to take a tour of the José Mourinho Training Centre which features two football fields and goalkeeper training zone to create a special and unique training experience for football players from around the world. Jose Mourinho is something of a local celebrity as he comes from nearby Setubal, where they have even named a street after him. Nearby to TROIA is the delightful area of Comporta. Renowned as the Hamptons of Europe thanks to its white sandy beaches and the blissful blue of the water, the region maintains a wonderfully wild nature thanks to its scenic old fishermen’s houses, thatched roofs and extensive rice fields. Comporta offers numerous restaurants and bars, but a real highlight is the recently opened Gomes Casa de vinhos and petiscos. Known as the

best and oldest gourmet mini-market in the area, this quaint, atmospheric restaurant serves up a huge range of speciality cheeses, sausages, and fantastic regional dishes and wines. A real find if you want a true Portuguese experience. Just be sure to get there early as they don’t take reservations and are hugely popular. It’s well worth heading over to Setubal for a day tour with local tour guides Zé da Mota Tuk Tuk Tours. In the comfort of an electric tuk tuk, you can take a day tour with a guide around the local area. During your trip you can enjoy the stunning Fortaleza de Sao Filipe fort with its amazing panoramic views over the city; and the Nature Park of Arrábida where Christian Louboutin shot his most recent campaign. A little rough around the edges, Setubal is a major commercial fishing centre where local fisherman bring their latest catch to display and sell to local residents and guests including fresh sardines, oysters. Not only can visitors purchase the freshest fish,

leave. While renting a property, the resort’s hotel is on hand for any queries you may have, offering another location for dining should you wish, although you have your own fully equipped kitchen and the onsite shop is very well stocked for essentials. You can also visit the Welcome Centre for more tips on what to do in the area, as well as hire a bike to further explore and visit the bird observatory.

Getting There: meat and local produce from the impressive food market, but they can also marvel at the 5,700 tile pieces that create a mural stretching over 350 sqm depicting scenes of Portuguese daily life in the 30s. Primarily an industrial city, Setubal is fascinating with plenty of quirky corners to discover. Make sure you stop in a local restaurant to try the famed choco frito (fried cuttlefish) and huge sardines. The properties at TROIA, whether a Beach House with its clean lines and extremely spacious areas, to the cosier - but no less spacious - Townhouses, have all been thoughtfully decorated by a Portuguese interior designer and boast natural elements and clever design techniques. The use of wood, light and sustainable materials, mean that the interiors are not only modern and sleek but also take note of the natural surrounds, bringing the inside in and truly creating an area of relaxation that you won’t want to

TROIA lies just an hour away from Lisbon and 2.5 hours from London, offering owners and visitors a chic beachside destination and retreat combined with rich cultural opportunities to explore on the peninsula itself and the Alentejo region. Flights from London to Lisbon are available throughout the year on British Airways, TAP Portugal, Easyjet, RyanAir. who was born and raised in Italy where he founded his very first Macellaio and where he grew his original idea of serving the most incredible Italian steaks into a successful chain of unique restaurants. With over twenty years of experience in the food industry, Roberto’s gastronomic journey brought him to London in 2012 and Macellaio RC Fitzrovia located in Bloomsbury is the fifth restaurant to open its doors. The site of this new restaurant was once one of the biggest petrol stations in 1920’s central London and you can see that the theme inside pays homage to this historical venue. Original parts from old Fiats such as a steering wheel and wing mirrors adorn the walls, waiters wear mechanics overalls and the whole restaurant has a very relaxed trattoria style atmosphere. However, as the main theme here is the wonderful and much valued Italian dry-aged Fassona beef which comes from the mountain valleys of Piedmont north of Genoa, the menu as you would expect is very beef focused and a variety of steaks are available as well as a selection of charcuterie and fine cheeses. The Butcher’s Theatre at the Petrol Station as it’s referred to (or butchery with tables) is because as you walk in you can see a proper butcher’s counter which dominates the entrance. You can feast your eyes on cuts of meat as well as super fresh steak tartare literally being butchered and prepared in front of you and there is also a dry ageing cellar where all meat is hung for at least six to eight weeks. Proudly on display, the menu offers every single variation of Fassona beef as well as eight different pizzas made with three different types of flour and Ferrarelle sparkling water which helps the dough to rise naturally as was the original Italian way. Left for a period of ninety hours, this gives the dough an

Macellaio’s mission is to serve the best quality food in a very simple manner allowing the ingredients to speak for themselves. Steak tartare with pomegranate and a parsley salad is served on a bed of bone marrow and rib eye and T-bone steaks which are at least seven to nine weeks dry aged are simply grilled the Italian way with olive oil and served with chips and a side dish of your choice. Dessert choices include deliciously creamy and perfectly set panna cotta or delicious Italian cheeses. A selection of fine Italian wines is also available. Macellaio’s commitment is to offer the excellence of Italian products which are the results of the dedicated artisans and farmers who share the same passion for authentic Italian produce with no compromise.

Between Battle Lines Champagne, a story of resilience.

Ahead of the centenary of the armistice on 11 November, Francoise Peretti, Director of the UK’s Champagne Bureau, reflects on the untold story of Champagne during World War One. Regarded as the region’s ‘darkest hour’, Champagne found itself trapped between the front lines from 1914-1918. Due to its location in the North East of France, it was one of the earliest to fall victim to the war and from the last week of August in 1914 its landscape was overrun with German soldiers advancing towards Paris. From 4th-11th September, the town of Epernay fell under occupation. Civil servants and bankers fled to Paris with public funds, leaving its residents with no money. Its captors threatened to burn the city to the ground if the German flag was not raised in front of the town hall by morning. Fortunately, the town was governed by a man revered as having ‘exceptional courage and vision’, who dealt with German requests almost single handedly. His name was Maurice Pol Roger, Mayor of Epernay. With Champagne only days march from Paris, French and British troops were sent by taxi to meet and repel the aggressors. Upon freeing Epernay, the French Army and British Expeditionary force pushed the Germans just behind, but not far enough, from the city of Reims to Vallée de la Marne, a region famed for its Pinot Noir grapes. September culminated in the harrowing First Battle of the Marne. It is estimated 80,000 French troops and 13,000 British died in this single battle. Reims spent the rest of the war under heavy shell fire, with one of the first casualties being the cathedral (rebuilt in 1919). Once the place that housed the Kings of France for their coronations, it was bombed as a suspected look-out post. Determined to resist, but with their homes unsafe, the Champenois retreated to live in the wine cellars. Over 250 kilometres of chalk tunnels run under champagne, which today hold roughly 1.3 billion ageing bottles of champagne. They built a new life underground which included military hospitals in Houses such as

Veuve Clicquot and Pommery; schools such as in Krug; churches and craftsmen shops. Defiant, they also hosted concerts, parties and banquets. We are still able to visit these places in les crayères. Hauntingly, the history is, literally, written on the walls and remains today – with messages of hope, love and dread adorning the cellars’ corridors as graffiti. In 1914, the harvest began on 21st September, with many of the Marne vineyards still in the range of German guns. With most men conscripted to fight, women overtook the harvests and running of the vineyards during the war years. Due to a lack of labourers, the harvest lasted until 11th October. RARE ‘LE SECRET’

money, Maurice Pol Roger and other leaders, began printing their own banknotes for the people to use to buy casks and other resources. Incredibly, this is still regarded as one of the finest vintages of the century. Logistically, wine production became challenging, with transportation of grapes and other essentials disrupted or impossible. Madame Jeanne Krug blended the 1915 Krug’s vintage herself entirely from black grapes. With no way to transport white grapes from the Côte des Blancs, she produced a dark vintage that was almost a rosé. A key figure during the war, she also remained one of the last two women left in Reims, running the military hospital and nursing the wounded until a full civilian evacuation was ordered in 1917. Shellfire, blockages and lack of labourers were not the only challenge that the champenois faced in wine production and sales. Due to a lack of fertilisers and chemical aids, the dreaded Phylloxera Vastatrix insect returned to wreak havoc on the vines. Over the arduous years, approximately 45% of the vineyards were destroyed or rendered useless. Likewise, the champenois lost two thirds of their export markets – with huge importers such as Germany and Russia no longer a viable option, compounded by prohibition in the United States. Exports fell from 23,066,523 bottles pre-war, to a desperate 5,067,671 in 1918. As we bask in the glow of an exceptional 2018 harvest and a record global turnover of €4.9 billion for Champagne, it seems fitting to reflect on how far this humble wine region has come, the sacrifices made and the horror it has overcome. The UK still remains the largest export market by volume, exceeding the United States and growing markets in Asia. In 1918, Sir Winston Churchill rallied British troops: ‘Remember gentlemen, we’re not just fighting for France – we’re fighting for Champagne!’ In that moment, he recognised the special relationship that Britain has with the Champagne region; not only a shared love of the finest of all sparkling wines, but a kinsmanship that is only borne from the shared endurance and hardship of war. Our histories are inextricably linked in this true story of resilience in the face of adversity.

Rare Champagne, the most awarded prestige Champagne, and Mellerio, the oldest jewellery dynasty in the world, have unveiled a unique partnership based on their shared royal legacy, refinement and excellence. Rare Le Secret is an exceptional cuvée from the award winning Rare Champagne house, available in the UK exclusively from Harrods in two beautiful, limitededition designs showcasing Mellerio’s unrivalled craftsmanship. In 1997, Rare Champagne cellar master and eight-time sparkling winemaker of the year, Régis Camus had a moment of inspiration. He saw something unique in the wines of that year and rather than declaring a vintage, he chose to blend a small quantity of this cuvée behind closed doors, secretly ageing it only in magnums in his private cellar. Now, twenty years later, the results are truly extraordinary. His very personal creation has a rare depth and complexity, with a lively citrus attack and a serene minerality. This sophisticated finesse inspired the Champagne house to approach Mellerio, with whom Rare Champagne share a muse. A sense of legacy and history is woven into these designs. The first of these, Rare Le Secret High Jewellery takes inspiration from Marie Antoinette’s elegant and extravagant dresses. It features a single, precious jewel of at least one carat - a choice of diamond, ruby, sapphire or emerald - embedded in the heart of interwoven bands of gold set with 510 diamonds. The beautiful gold and platinum threads that run down each bottle represent the blend of Chardonnay minerality and Pinot Noir intensity, while the 24 carat, solid gold muselet is the very first of its kind from Champagne. The presentation box is reminiscent of that originally used to present Mellerio jewels to Marie Antoinette. The case has a mirrored interior, reflecting the cuts of the precious stones used in each bottle adornment. This exquisite craftsmanship perfectly complements the elegance of the wine inside and is reflected in its rarity - only ten of these bottles are available worldwide. The second design is a minimalist delight. The Rare Le Secret Goldsmith is a limited edition of just one thousand, engraved and numbered magnums. Inside each bottle is the same blend, while the gold cartouche on each of the magnums boasts flowing lines and wonderfully decorative typography. Hidden inside the sleek, matte black case for the Champagne is a golden mirrored interior, which reflects this stunning minimalist creation. Rare Le Secret High Jewellery is priced at £115,000. One bottle of the sapphire, ruby and emerald editions are available. Rare Le Secret Goldsmith is priced at £1,150. Fifty numbered magnums are available. All exclusively from Harrods. rare-champagne.com

BERRY BROS & RUDD

Wine Masters with Edwin Dublin

Manager of Berry Bros. & Rudd London Wine Shop at 63 Pall Mall, Edwin left a 20 year medical sciences career, during which time he organised staff wine tastings, to enter the world of wine full-time. Having 'graduated' from Oddbins and via a short spell with Laithwaites, he arrived at Berry Bros. & Rudd in 2005. Since then he has developed a passion for the wines of Alsace, Burgundy, Piemonte and especially Champagne which he visits (and tastes) as often as he can and teaches at tastings in the BB&R cellars. When not imbibing on these he can be found at Dukes Hotel bar, sipping a Berrys’ No.3 London Dry Gin martini.

2016 Berry Bros. & Rudd Good Ordinary Claret by Kate Boxer (Limited Edition Label) £9.95 Celebrated British artist Kate Boxer created her dashing dandy - a nod to our former customer Beau Brummel - for the latest in our limited-edition series of Good Ordinary Claret. Just 7,000 bottles have been produced. Our best-selling wine for many decades, GOC, as it's known, brilliantly highlights the drinkability of modern red Bordeaux. Bright, medium ruby in colour it has a siren-like nose of black cherries, bramble fruit and wood smoke. The palate follows through with a long, velvety finish. Equally at home with a weekday supper or a grand Sunday roast, it is the perfect wine for all occasions. This proves once again its popularity. And that dashing label makes it ideal if taking to a party where you have no idea who the host is never mind what they drink! Everyone loves this easy-drinking drop but if you choose to take a moment to ponder and reflect you do pick out that abundance of flavours with just that touch of cigar smoke no decent claret should be without. If a dinner party, it is equally at home with a robust starter, hearty main or the cheese course. 2017 Domaine Lyrarakis, Dafni, Psarades Vineyard, Crete £13.25 The Lyrarakis Psarades Vineyard Dafni is one of the most unique white wines you will ever taste. There are only 10 hectares of this fragrant grape variety in existence, thanks largely to producers like Lyrarakis who worked hard to bring it back from the brink of extinction. Dáfni is the Greek word for ‘laurel’ and wines made from this grape indeed exhibit a wonderful bay leaf aroma. As with all Lyrarakis wines, this Dafni is wonderfully fresh and juicy with a creamy mouthfeel and underlining notes of lime and nectarine as well as a herbal, rosemary and bay tone. A very versatile white wine that would match with a variety of foods, including some of the more difficult ones like asparagus and artichoke. Move over Sauvignon Blanc. If you love that (or even if you don’t) then do try this. A similar freshness and herbal

quality that here brings to mind Greek vine leave dishes but which will partner those aforementioned troublesome vegetables and also grilled/fried fish or white meats - especially with a touch of charring - and various other salads or Mediterranean vegetables. But works too as a standalone wine with that creamy note just stopping the herbal flavours and zippy acidity from straying into harsh territory. Hambledon, Classic Cuvée, Sparkling, Hampshire, England £29.95 Hambledon Vineyard has a long and fascinating history. Not only does the village have the reputation as the cradle of cricket, long before Lord’s it seems, but it is also the location of the first English commercial vineyard, courtesy of the Francophile Sir Guy Salisbury Jones, who developed the vineyards in the early 1950s. After an uneventful hiatus the vineyard was purchased by Ian Kellett in 1999 and his investments of both patience and capital are now yielding fruit, quite literally, in the form of some of the best located Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier grapes in the country. Fruits of the 2011 harvest, with reserve wines added from 2010, this is a most impressive effort, its lees-ageing imparting gentle biscuity notes and adding weight and structure to the first impressions, which recall English orchard fruit, yellow fruits and quince. It's fascinating place in English winemaking history and cricket notwithstanding, the sheer quality of this makes for a great sparkling wine alternative to Champagne, made with the same grape varieties and technique. (With a little help from a much respected champenois consultant recommended by Pol Roger the wines produced here are stunning). There is a characteristic crisp red apple fruit from good English-grown Pinot Noir allied with more weight than sometimes seen in English sparklers, this is superb. This would get any party off to a great start showcasing the fact there are more than just patriotic reasons to drink English.

All the ingredients have been carefully sourced from specialists in their field, working directly with Italian suppliers and importers. Copper pans are used to deliver most Harry’s Bar’s delicious handmade pasta dishes, to create the ideal blend of ingredients and sauce through the pasta when plated at your table. The team makes the pizzas from hand-stretched dough made from a mixture of different Italian flours before proving it for 72 hours to maximise the flavour for a light and crisp crust, finished with classic toppings. For dessert, the giant profiteroles or classic Tiramisu are worthy choices. To wash it all down, Harry’s Bar offers an extensive wine list and wide range of Italian Botanical G&T’s. COCKTAIL COLUMN

A Cornucopia of Cocktails with JJ Goodman

A globally recognised personality and trendsetter in the world of mixed drinks, JJ Goodman is the founder and owner of the London Cocktail Club bar group and Craft Cocktail Co.

Following another successful London Cocktail Week, it’s becoming increasingly apparent to us bartenders, that the millennial adoption of mindful drinking and quality over quantity, has well and truly raised the stakes when it comes to shaking the perfect cocktail. These raised stakes have also propelled cocktail creating and mixology into popular culture, meaning more and more of us want to try our hands at making

cocktail masterpieces in our own homes. But where do you start? What’s the easiest but most impressive cocktail to make? What do you do if you don’t have the pro’s equipment? This month, I am ecstatic to be releasing my first book ‘Kitchen Cocktails’, which you can get your hands on in any London Cocktail Club. Writing this book has been a dream of mine since I first started shaking spirits. There is a tonne of amazing cocktail books out there with some of the tastiest recipes around, which as a bartender really motivated me to get where I am today. However, these tend to be more industry focused and how many of us can really get our hands-on ice from the top of Everest, Mockingbird tears or spices from the fifth corner of the world in everyday life? Especially without forking out a fortune! My aim with this collection of recipes, was to create a selection of sips that any one of us would be able to rustle up at home, just by running to the local shop whatever hour of the day. One of my favs is the ‘Mintless Mojito’. It is a great take on a DIY drink that won’t break the bank. Fresh ingredients, such as mint goes off super quick, so for this, I have used good old polos and a splash of rum with cubed ice. Head on down to any LCC to pick up your copy, and whilst you’re there why not try a cocktail or two.. as a taste test of course.

The cowls have been precisely sculpted and engineered to funnel the air gracefully over the car to enhance driver comfort and deliver an even more enjoyable

open-top experience whilst maintaining the high levels of quality expected from the marque with matching interior finish. As you might expect from this addition, the pleasure of driving with the roof down is dramatically improved with reduced impact on preened hair and lower levels of potential debris being blown in, or in fact out of the car, but the biggest improvement is to the overall aerodynamics of the car. Once the Aero Cowling has been removed, you realise just how vast the rear seat space is and immediately understand the benefits of this impressive piece of engineering. Each cowl within the masterpiece offers enhanced lockable leather-lined storage compartments for personal effects while the cover itself, made of carbon-fibre and aluminium - making it incredibly light and strong for its size - is swathed in Rolls-Royce leather which matches the interior of the car. It is completed with matching button features for opening and closing.

YOUR DRIVE

Dawn in its own right has always, since launch in 2015, been an incredible piece of design and engineering and this new feature simply enhances the cars lines and efficiency. Boasting the same impressive 6.6-litre V12 unit as the standard variant, the Dawn Aero Cowling proudly delivers its 571 PS of power and enormous 820 Nm of torque through its eye-wateringly large wheels and on to the tarmac to produce a zero to sixty time of just 4.8 seconds with a restricted top speed of 155 mph. If you are now pondering as to why a car with such a large engine, with such high levels of power and torque and so much talk of aerodynamics can only achieve what might be considered an average rate of acceleration in the supercar world, you would be wise to consider that this is firstly not designed to be a supercar yet is still able to perform at such a level and secondly has to produce enough power to shift over two and a half tonnes of metal, wood and fine leather - amongst other things. Needless to say, the 6.6-litre engine becomes a necessity to ensure the performance levels are maintained when such materials are being used. Inside, the car is everything you would expect from the Rolls-

Providing a prominent position which is so apparent when the roof is lowered, the cover is ideal for a unique touch of personal style, whether that be a striking leather or some personalised detailing, the options really are endless. And it’s not reserved for the Aero Cowling cover, every aspect of this car is customisable such as the matching paint detail on the car pictured. If you have something in mind for your Dawn, the team at Rolls-Royce will endeavour to accommodate every request that falls within the parameters of functionality and engineering limitations. Featuring the unmistakable Rolls-Royce grille and Spirit of Ecstasy, Dawn Aero Cowling stands proudly and prominently on the road with its exaggerated, low width provided by the sleek headlights and cutting front spoiler. The lines of this car, although vast, are simultaneously delicate and powerful. Smooth, rounded edges are juxtaposed by sharp detailing such as the oversized door handles with the choice of alloy determining the cars overall personality. Opt for an aggressive, sharp wheel and the car will respond in kind, delivering an aggressive, sportier side while choosing a smoother, more subtle wheel will allow Dawn to ooze

Royce factory. Flawless craftsmenship adorns every inch of the interior and exterior space from meticulously stitched fine leather seats to the stunning feature inlays throughout the cabin and handpainted pin-stripe detailing along the body - if you so wish. As always, you are welcome to choose from a plethora of finishes for your car to make it truly unique and the Aero Cowling simply adds an extra piece of canvas on which you can work.

opulence and grace, providing a more refined, luxurious aesthetic. It is somewhat surprising the impact that the Aero Cowling has on this car. Remove it and you are transported to a lavish, opentop experience complete with straw hamper in the back and scarf floating in the wind. Leave it on and it becomes an all together different car looking to seduce the driver in you to get behind the wheel and push its limits.

What makes this piece of engineering even more impressive is its seamless integration into the existing design. It is an ‘add-on’, but has been designed and crafted as if it were always a part of the car. This is the perfect illustration of design at its best. Having the ability to make something new appear to be something that has always been is no easy acheivement and simply demonstrates the level of quality that can be found behind the doors of the RollsRoyce factory. There are obvious restrictions to this cars performance considering its size and weight - mostly in the cornering department - which is an unavoidable truth regarding physics. However, the ride comfort you get to enjoy is unlike anything else you will experience. When you are cruising down to the South of France, you will have little concern for the cornering performance, especially while you indulge in the open-top experience provided by your stunning Aero Cowling and your lucky passenger will appreciate it too as you glide along the road on this stunning magic carpet ride. Power, elegance and prowess combine with functionality, useability and comfort to create quite possibly the best drophead coupé in the world. Regardless, there certainly wouldn’t be any arguments for the title of most luxurious. The quality of the materials used across this car with the levels of craftsmenship on show at every turn, there are few open-top cars in the world that even fall on the same playing field, let alone consider competing. This is a drophead coupé with style, class, sophistication and presence and has all of these things thanks to the team behind its design. Its sleek lines create the illusion of a much smaller vehicle, while the undeniable functionality of this four seater remains thanks to the removable option of the Aero Cowling. The single piece unit, although a two-person job to remove, completely transforms this car and allows it to stretch its grasp on the luxury car market. A two-seater drophead coupé with this level of quality, performance and flexibility is quite honestly unfathomable. But that is what makes it so unique and so special.

CHELSEA CARS

1970 Bristol 411 Series 1 £POA

Big Block Bristol British manufacturer Bristol produced numerous cars featuring Chrysler V8 engines, but the 411 was the first model to implement the B series ‘big block’ unit. Boasting a whopping 6.3-litre engine, the 411 gained approximately 30 percent more power over its predecessor, the 410. Rated for its high levels of comfort, performance and handling, the 411 is a machine to behold. Able to reach speeds of 143 mph, this car has so much power, that the engineers fitted a limited slip

differential to cope with it. This example is presented in the very desirable colour combination of black coachwork with black leather interior and automatic transmission and is in fantastic order. Owned from new by a single family and showing just 36,900 miles verified by the owner, this is an incredible find for any enthusiast. The car has been well maintained regularly by the previous owner and represents a very presentable example of this sought after marque.

SAVILLS

Is Wallpaper the New Statement Wall? with Christopher Bramwell, Director, Savills Chiswick The first recorded use of wallpaper was in China in 200 B.C., when the Chinese glued rice paper to walls. During Queen Anne’s reign in 18th century Britain, wallpaper proved so popular that there was a wallpaper tax introduced in 1712. In effect until 1836, it saw people pay tax for painted, patterned or printed wallpaper.

Early European wallpaper trends included panoramic scenes and trompe l’oeil motifs. During the 1970s and 80s, the popularity of wallpaper waned; however in the 2000s and beyond we’ve seen its resurgence as a key interior design trend. While feature walls have often taken shape through dramatic paint tones or a textural finish, wallpaper is increasingly used by homeowners looking to add a personalised and unique touch to their property. Colours and patterns can add life, character and expression to a room. Meanwhile on viewings, I find that the most important thing to leave the potential buyer with is a memorable impression. If the house has a room unlike any other they’ve seen, that will generate conversation and will ensure they go home with that property still at the forefront of their mind. For the creative homeowner, feature walls can add character to their home and allow owners to showcase their artistic flair, in addition to differentiating their property from others. When buyers are picturing themselves in a future home, the homelier it looks the better. Statement wallpaper can do just this; by adding a splash

COLUMN of colour and pattern, a room can break away from neutral décor while still allowing a buyer to put their own stamp on a property. By putting up wallpaper in key living areas or bedrooms, a home can feel more put together and thought through. Statement wallpapers can work in any type and age of property - from modern apartments to period family houses and everything inbetween. With so many designs out there, there’s bound to be one that blends with the look and feel of any home. We’re currently marketing a property in Chiswick which alongside its specification and interior design, has an eclectic selection of statement A fully renovated Victorian villa featuring exceptional wallpapers space following a comprehensive refurbishment throughout programme substantially increasing the footprint. Since 2000, I've seen a property boom, a credit crunch, a recovery and the rise of the renter, to name but a few of the changes which have shaped the market. Seasons come and go, families move in and out and prices rise faster and more slowly. But how has the local area housing market changed in the last 20 years? In E14, the average price of a mid-market property is £510,000, a 142.9 per cent increase from the average property price in 2000 - which was £210,000. Meanwhile, the top 5% most expensive properties in the area start at £1.6m while the top 1% start at £3.2m. Upwards pressure on pricing has been underpinned by the fair availability of credit which has kept demand stable at a high level, whilst low levels of house building have limited supply.

In the last two decades, many homeowners have also become buy-to-let landlords to benefit as much as possible from strong capital inflation. In the local area, 36.6 per cent of properties are owned by private landlords - an increase of 14.8 per cent from two decades ago. The tax environment has been made less comfortable for accidental landlords, but opportunities abound for serious investors. While we can't predict where the property market will be in the next 20 years, we can only see prices going one way: up. If you're a current homeowner and are thinking about selling your property, or you're a buyer interested in finding their next home, please pop into my office for a chat. I'd love to hear from you. Average sold prices can change a lot over a short period of time. The effect is accentuated by the small number of properties transacting in a local area. So this chart shows a lot of volatility but also represents a warts-and-all profile of recent market movements.
