Chelsea Flower Show Now in its 10th year, the ever popular RHS Chelsea Flower Show is returning this month for its 2019 edition. Taking place over 21-25 May, this year’s theme encourages people to reconnect with nature with gardens celebrating the beauty of the natural world. Seven-time gold medal winning designer Andy Sturgeon returns for show sponsor M&G Investments, drawing inspiration for his garden from nature’s power to regenerate. The woodland landscape will be colonised by young trees, ferns and jewel-like flowers, interspersed with stone platforms and huge burnt timber sculptures representing natural rock formations. Multi RHS gold medal winning designer, Sarah Eberle returns to Main Avenue with a garden celebrating 100 years of forestry with The Forestry Commission. Titled The Resilience Garden, it ahead to the biggest challenges facing our forests in the future, exploring how they can be made resilient to a changing climate and the increasing threats of pests and diseases. Other show highlights include the three gardens on Main Avenue, and The Savills and David Harper Garden by Andrew Duff. A celebration of the environmental benefits of trees, the garden seeks to create a beautiful, sustainable woodland clearing within a city, featuring bio diverse trees and greenery known to remove harmful pollutants from the atmosphere. EVENTS The importance of having access to nature and green spaces for all ages and abilities has inspired the brief for The Greenfingers Charity Garden designed by Kate Gould. Intended for a hospice to provide a fun, interactive and uplifting space where seriously ill children, their families and friends can come together and embrace the benefits of being in the fresh air and engaging with the natural environment. For the second year Royal Hospital Way will be populated by inspiring gardens offering new ideas and inspiration in the Space to Grow Category; and Joe Perkins is taking on his first solo garden for social media giant Facebook with the theme being connectivity. British horticulture remains at the heart of RHS Chelsea as the UK’s top nurseries fill the Great Pavilion with thousands of immaculate plant varieties on display. For the first time the Great Pavilion will also house a judged walk-through Show Garden by internationally renowned British Designer Tom Dixon and home furnishings retailer IKEA. The immersive garden hopes to raise awareness that it is both possible, affordable and rewarding to grow your own food in the city using sustainable urban growing techniques. Another first for the show, The Duchess of Cambridge and Award Winning Landscape Architects Andree Davies and Adam White, of Davies White Landscape Architects have created the RHS Back to Nature Garden. The RHS Back to Nature Garden is a woodland setting for families and communities, and encourages all generations, from all backgrounds, to connect with nature and enjoy growing plants for their health and wellbeing. Something core to the RHS’s charitable work.

WATCHES

PANERAI LUMINOR MARINA Panerai’s iconic watch, the Luminor Marina, is now available in a new version, strong and robust like the stainless steel of which the case and bracelet are made, with the P.9010 Manufacture automatic mechanical movement. Available in 42 or 44 millimetres, the new Luminor Marina has a brand new silver-coloured dial, with a special brushed finish formed of vertical stripes, and large figures covered with white luminous material ensuring excellent visibility at night and underwater. Symmetrical with the date at 3 o’clock is the counter at 9 o’clock in which the blue small seconds hand rotates, blue being the colour of Panerai and the sea, the element with which the brand has always been historically linked. The case, made of AISI 316L stainless steel, an alloy particularly resistant to corrosion, has the classic Panerai design, unmistakable thanks to the “bridge” device which protects the winding crown, and it is fitted with a perfectly integrated metal bracelet. The shape of each link recalls the iconic bridge and it is harmoniously integrated with the other links - without any screws - in a bracelet which is perfectly ergonomic, flexible and pleasant on the wrist, sporty, yet sophisticated in design with alternating polished and brushed finishes. On the back of the case, the bidirectional oscillating weight of the P.9010 Manufacture movement, automatic with a power reserve of three days, can be admired through a sapphire glass porthole. The calibre has the device for stopping the balance wheel to synchronise the watch and the mechanism for rapidly adjusting the hour hand, which can be moved forwards or backwards without interfering with the running of the minute hand. This particular function, very useful when setting the time or changing the time zone, also enables the date to be adjusted very quickly. panerai.com

Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar When the first collection of the new era was presented in October 1994, the innovative design of the Lange 1 attracted considerable attention. As on a noble dashboard, the asymmetric arrangement of the displays in the compact space of the dial assured immediate recognisability due to its unusual configuration. The same arrangement was adopted for the Lange 1 Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar model that was first launched in 2012. A rotating peripheral ring that indicates the month was devised to integrate all calendar indications in the dial architecture of the Lange 1. The underside of the construction features a circumferential contour with wave-shaped recesses. A spring-loaded sampler lever glides along this contour and is deflected by a magnitude that corresponds to the depth of the respective recess. The more it is deflected, the shorter the month. All displays switch instantaneously. A retrograde day-of-week display takes the place of a powerreserve indicator. The leap year is indicated in a small aperture at 6 o’clock. And the moon-phase display, calculated to an accuracy of 122.6 years, includes a hand-engraved lunar disc in white gold that is visible through an aperture on the seconds subdial. Thanks to the intuitive arrangement of the simultaneously switching calendar indications, a single glance delivers all of the information at once. The argenté-coloured dial of the “25th Anniversary” edition has discreetly nuanced shades of blue. The palette ranges from

thermally blued-steel hands to all inscriptions, including the numerals of the outsize date and the alligator leather strap. Only a modest epigraph at 12 o’clock reveals a further function. This is because the 69-part tourbillon with the patented stopseconds mechanism is visible only from the movement side. There, the filigreed cage rotates about its axis once a minute to eliminate the influence of gravity on Lange’s proprietary cam-poised balance. The stop-seconds mechanism makes it possible to instantly stop the tourbillon cage with the balance at any time by pulling the crown so the watch can be set with one-second accuracy. The tourbillon cock is graced with a blue engraving shaped like the Lange outsize date with the number 25. The 25 not only refers to the birthday but also to a special detail of the launch. It took place on 24 October 1994. On this day, the date displays of the debut watches were set to the 25th so they would be current when showcased in the following day’s newspapers. The high winding efficiency of the automatic calibre L082.1 is attained with a heavy central rotor featuring an outer centrifugal mass in platinum; its middle segment with the embossed A. Lange & Söhne signature is made of 21-carat gold. The Lange-typical quality hallmarks of the 624-part movement include the black polish on the upper side of the tourbillon cage and a diamond endstone bearing that holds the tourbillon.

Weddings and Wills Do you know the score? with Claire-Marie Cornford, Will, Trust & Estate Disputes Partner and Toby Hales, Family Law Partner at Irwin Mitchell

It’s something that tends not to feature prominently on the long list of wedding preparations: flowers, catering, invitations and music, make a new will… But did you know that getting married revokes your existing one? You might be blissfully unaware that your will is invalid and consequently on your death, with any careful preparations before your marriage becoming null and void, your estate would be subject to intestacy rules. This issue was highlighted in a recent case. Mr DMM had a valid will which left his estate to his partner of 20 years and his three daughters. When he and his partner decided to get married, his daughters tried to prevent him from doing so on the grounds that he lacked mental capacity. One of his daughters had power of attorney for him in respect of his financial affairs and it was argued that he did not have sufficient understanding to enter into a valid marriage. The legal effect of getting married would be to revoke his existing will and his wife would receive much more of his estate under the intestacy rules than she would have got under the will. Claire-Marie Cornford, a partner in our will, trust and estate disputes team comments: “Under the Mental Capacity Act capacity is issue specific, so you might have capacity to do one thing but not another. In this case the expert brought in to assess Mr DMM thought that he did not have

capacity to revoke the power of attorney made in favour of his daughter, but he did have capacity to marry his long-term partner. The test for whether an individual has capacity to make a will is slightly different again and we frequently see challenges to wills because it is asserted the testator did not have sufficient mental capacity for the will to be valid. “Not many people appreciate that getting married will revoke an existing will. This point has been raised by the Law Commission in the recent consultation on wills and it has been questioned whether the law should be changed in this area. In any event, get in touch with your solicitor if you’re worried.” Toby Hales, a partner in our family law team comments: “When considering getting married it’s worth thinking about the possible benefits of a pre-nuptial agreement, in particular because it offers greater certainty in the event the marriage breaks down. But while most people are aware that divorce can have significant financial implications and celebrity and high-net-worth divorces are highly publicised in the media, the impact of marriage and divorce on inheritance is much less talked about. “Not only does marriage invalidate an existing will and confer new entitlements on each spouse, but the effect of divorce is that your former spouse is treated as having pre-deceased you - so any provisions in your will relating to your former spouse can no longer take effect, effectively rendering the will useless. “It’s essential whenever you have a major life event that you take advice. Together with our colleagues across Private Wealth we offer our clients holistic and comprehensive advice about their circumstances so they can be prepared for whatever might follow.”

POSITIVE LUXURY

Sustainable Luxury Making a difference in the luxury market with Diana Verde Nieto, co-founder and CEO of Positive Luxury. The global climate is changing and not just in an environmental manner. In line with the undeniable crisis the planet faces, the consumer market is responding with remarkable changes of its own. To fully understand what’s happening, we spoke to global sustainability expert and co-founder of Positive Luxury, Diana Verde Nieto. Dedicating her life working towards sustainability, Diana is not only an ambassador for global change, but perfectly positioned to help us all understand how we can make more informed choices for positive change. Where did your passion for sustainability come from? Growing up in Argentina under dictatorship gave me a disproportionate sense of respect. In my view, respect is a key ingredient in any kind of relationship. If you breakdown sustainability to the purest definition coined by Gro Harlem Brundtland back in 1987; she coined sustainability as meeting the needs today without compromising the needs of future generations - in essence sustainability is about respect for people and for our world. How did you go about getting involved in sustainability on a global scale? I started my first business in 2002 - it was the first international sustainability communications consultancy based in the UK. We built the business to have subsidiaries in

Shanghai, New York, Milan, Madrid and of course London. At that time the sustainability landscape was rather different and more often that not, I had to explain the concept of sustainable development. Throughout my career I have been very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to pitch for great projects that help further my business and scale internationally. For example, we worked on the launch of the Inconvenience Truth movie in the UK and contributed to the success of Former Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Al Gore “The Climate reality train the trainer” programme. Where did the inspiration for Positive Luxury come from? I’ve always been passionate about sustainability and making the world a better place. My partner for this venture is Karen Hanton, MBE and I discussed the growing need to enable business to communicate in easy language their sustainability efforts at the point of sale, subsequently quenching consumers thirst for transparency and authenticity, this in fact remains true today. I’m extremely fortunate to have Karen, a technology pioneer, who founded Europe’s largest online restaurant booking service listing over 8000 restaurants in 14 countries & was sold to NASDAQ listed Opentable in 2010. After all, to make the concept of sustainability accessible to people and scalable, technology is much needed.

INTERVIEW How does Positive Luxury impact on the luxury market? The definition of luxury has changed. Whilst once synonymous with indulgence or opulence, today it is hard to imagine a luxury product or experience without brands highlighting their positive social and environmental impact. In fact, sustainability is expected when it comes to luxury products or experiences. This is where we come in; Positive Luxury connects luxury brands and people who care about the future through the Butterfly Mark. A symbol of trust that helps identify the luxury brands that meet the highest standards of verified innovation, social and environmental performance offering transparency and equipping people to make informed purchasing decisions at the point of sale. Has there been a shift in buying trends and are we already experiencing changes in buying practices in the luxury market? Our 2019 Predictions Report - ‘Generation Less’ highlights the rise of a new, ageless demographic that is united by a values-driven mindset. They cherish experience, convenience, personalisation, work-life balance, and are more environmentally and socially conscious than any other social group we’ve seen before. Sustainability creates desire with 89% of consumers expecting brands to publicly communicate their sustainability actions especially in the luxury sector. The two biggest challenges that brands are facing is climate change and attracting and retaining talent. 43% of millennials will work only for companies that demonstrate their commitment to having a positive impact in the world. However, I guess the most groundbreaking fact is that the Chinese luxury shoppers who today account for over USD $73 billion, care about sustainability. Will the luxury market reach a point where they can no longer rely on the quality of their products and have to consider the environmental impact to attract customers? Indeed - climate change, along with talent acquisition and retention are some of the biggest concerns for the luxury industry along with consistency and reliability of raw material, quality and quantities. With this in mind, it is fair to say that the Luxury industry is rather vulnerable to the impact of climate change, hence why luxury brands are investing in Research & Development in order to ensure a sustainable business over time. Who are the brands leading the way in the fight for sustainability? I’ve never been a fan with this type of statement. The brands that have been investing in sustainability for a long time are all making great progress in taking leadership in their respective industries. Sustainability is a journey and the starting point for each brand is very different from one another. Having said that there are a few brands that it’s fair to highlight for their leadership in this space. For example; Louis Vuitton has always been highly conscious of both respecting nature, embracing talent and craftsmanship. Since their first carbon footprint audit back in 2004, Louis Vuitton

has been constantly innovating and, twenty years on, this still remains a priority; led by the central Environment Department they coordinate over 50 eco-champions across the business. The Maison is committed to the utmost quality across its business practices, as underpinned by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, such as Responsible Production and Consumption, Climate Change, and Equal Employment. Louis Vuitton carefully monitors its supply chain to ensure traceability and will continue to innovate with materials that have a significantly lower environmental footprint. This is shown further in their creative team who consider environmental impacts of their products from conception (raw materials) to end of life. The Maison’s commitment doesn’t stop there with further pledges on their packaging and circular creativity. The Richemont group invested in developing their first own sustainable watch brand BAUME. Baume watches was conceived genderless, conflict free and vegan. BAUME is innovating with materials that are new to watchmaking, such as upcycled skateboards. The brand selects materials based on their low environmental footprint, demonstrating that sustainability can be desirable and synonymous with quality, too. Material options for watch straps include cork, recycled PET, cotton, linen and Alcantara. In 2012, Biotherm built the Waterlovers initiative, a program to minimise Biotherm’s impact on water and aquatic life and contribute towards the protection of important marine areas. The initiative’s mission is a source of inspiration that is integrated throughout the brand at every level, internally and externally: ingredients, formulae for skincare products, packaging, consumer education and awareness, or philanthropy. Internally, Biotherm Waterlovers has developed a strong sustainable water plan, committed to more sustainable water use and environmental best practices in the production of existing and future products, from a minimum 90% biodegradability target for rinse-off formulas and 100% FSC certified cardboard packaging to introducing naturally-derived particles in our scrubs. What can be done to encourage further developments in sustainability? Sustainability created desire and this is not just exclusive to luxury products and experiences. What is different today from 5 years, even 2 years ago is that there is pull not just from NGO’s and government to encourage brands to invest in better systems enabling them to deliver a triple bottom line, positive social economic and environmental impact. The voices are growing louder from consumers, from all generations, geographies and segments of society- Sustainability is now an expectation. As more CEOs are linking a healthier bottom line to their sustainability investment, they can now clearly understand that there is a business case for sustainability. Its moved from supply chain to the boardroom and the marketing team as sustainability as a brand pillar is imperative to authentically engage with a younger consumer group.

Perfectly Parisian The original city of love maintains its spot at the top of romantic weekend getaways, just moments away from London, it offers the perfect escape for those wanting to sample a more Parisian way of life and indulge in some Europe, nee the world’s most iconic landmarks. Events both deliberate and unfortunately accidental over recent months have caused disruption, dismay and sadness across Paris including the fire that ripped through the historic and iconic Notre Dame last month, yet, this incredible city continues to provide the quintessentially French experience that so many travel to Paris to enjoy year in, year out. Such events often have a major impact on a destination, certainly when such a key landmark falls victim to such a devestating event. However, thanks to Notre

Dame’s global standing and recognition, along with this city’s seemingly endless list of other world renowned landmarks and fantastic quality and quantity of luxurious shopping haunts, Paris is able maintain its standing as a welcoming, vibrant, exciting and historic destination. Access to Paris from London could not be easier. Whichever mode of transport you decide to take, whether you jump on the train straight from Central London or take a quick flight from almost any of the London airports, getting there really is easy. If you’ve got a comfortable GT that needs some use, you also have the perfect opportunity, with a 3 hour drive once you reach the French side of the Channel to enjoy, there’s really no excuse.

The Landmark London, 222 Marylebone Road, London NW1 6JQ | 020 7631 8000 | reservations@thelandmark.co.uk

The Landmark London Originally opened on the 1st July 1899 when rooms cost a mere three-and-sixpence a night, The Landmark London is one of the capital’s finest hotels offering 5-star luxury in the heart of Marylebone. The hotel was originally designed around a vast courtyard which allowed light and air into all the bedrooms, a feature that has been slightly modified over time to create the hotel’s stunning Winter Garden restaurant, complete with leafy palm trees and an eight-storey glass atrium. The courtyard was and still is extremely unique in London and it provided an extremely dramatic entrance and has awed guests for over a century with its glass-roof and airy interior. The original roof covered only the ground floor. The roof was then changed to a higher floor to make the inside courtyard a grand ‘winter garden’, hence the name that has continued to remain. In the fifties, the roof was completely removed by the British Railway who had taken over the building at the time and it was not until 1991 that it was put back on, as it is today. As part of the Leading Hotels of the World, The Landmark London offers wonderfully lavish five-star service and accommodation as you would expect. Guests can choose from a variety of room options from the generously sized Superior room with a Queen size bed; Deluxe Room; Executive Room with a large seating area, through to the Executive Family Room and Corner Executive Room. Each boast elegant Italian marble bathrooms, White Company toiletries, complimentary Shoe Shine service, free High-Speed Wi-Fi and access to the hotel Spa. On top of this wide array of room choices, guest also have the option of staying in one of 7 lavish suites. The Landmark Suite

in particular, is incredibly generous in size and complete with a kitchen and large living area that’s perfect for entertaining during a longer stay. While the sights and sounds of London are just moments away from the hotel, those looking to truly relax during their stay should make time to visit the impressive Spa. Boasting world-class facilities, including a state-of-the-art gymnasium, a chlorine free 15 metre indoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and sanarium, The Spa at The Landmark London allows guests to slip into a tranquil state in the heart of the busy capital. No Spa visit is complete without an indulgent treatment or two, and luckily The Spa at The Landmark London works in partnership with Germaine de Capuccini; one of Europe’s leading skin care houses, to offer a range of exclusive treatments created based on the best therapies and techniques from across the world. From pampering massages and body care therapies to exceptional facials, you will be spoilt for choice. A recent addition to the menu is the Honey & Rose facial which incorporates the natural botanical ingredients of rose petals, rose hip oil and royal jelly to instantly soothe skin and restore from the outside in. The nourishing treatment helps to repair, protect and strengthen the skin making it a perfect solution to tired, city-stressed complexions leaving skin softer, smoother and calmer. XU TEAHOUSE Boasting stunning interiors, reminiscent of the luxury dining rooms of 1930’s Taipei, XU Teahouse is the perfect places to enjoy innovative Taiwanese style cuisine. Nestled between Chinatown and Soho, XU serves a creative menu based on classic Chinese and Taiwanese cuisines. With a focus on carefully sourced Taiwanese ingredients, the restaurant’s playful ‘news’ style printed menu boasts an array of dishes with highlights including the delightfully sticky Sweet and Sour Balsamic Aubergine with three cornered leeks; Peanut Lotus crisps and Garlic Steamed Cockles. Not to be missed are the authentic dumplings. The large 28 Day aged Middlewhite Pork Xian Bing dumplings are one of the bestsellers and its easy to see why thanks to the meaty filling that’s enhanced by the chilli vinegar dip. The Taiwanese Sausage Taro Dumplings are also must-tries with the taro adding a delectably sweet touch. Moving on to mains and XU’s Shou Pa Chicken is wonderfully moist having been marinated and charcoal roasted with ginger, spring onion and aged white soy. The BBQ style Char Siu Iberico

Pork with crunchy grilled cucumber is absolutely delicious and really showcases the cuisine thanks to the wonderfully thick sauce and tender pork. In addition to the mains, you can add the famed XU Lardo Lard Rice, or the slightly healthier Seasonal Greens and Steamed Chi Shiang Rice. M o rt i m e r H o u s e K i t c h e n Having recently announced the placement of new Head Chef, “Lello” Favuzzi - previously of L’Anima - Mortimer House Kitchen has created a brand new menu of simple and well-executed plates bringing together the bold flavours of Italy with the delights of the Middle East. Housed inside a beautiful Art Deco building in the heart of Fitzrovia, Mortimer House Kitchen is incredibly welcoming having been built upon Maslow’s principles and hierarchy of needs, a philosophy of human motivation and happiness that is central to the restaurant’s existence. With 90 covers, the interiors at the elegant neighbourhood restaurant have been designed by New York architects AvroKO, and features a central open kitchen and enticing bar. Using a warm colour palette with elegant lighting, the restaurant also houses a glass ceiling conservatory that can be transformed on request into a secluded private dining room. The menu is large and varied - built on a sharing concept. Expect simple yet delicious delights such as burnt carrots served with yoghurt, tahini and fennel pollen; fresh Mazara prawn crudo with celery cress and chilli; Red Hereford

Beef carpaccio, black truffle & pickled vegetables; and the magnificent Levantine inspired charcoal cauliflower with yoghurt and za’atar. In fact, there are so many tempting dishes, you will feel spoilt for choice. The simple and delicate sounding Herb tortelli really packs a flavour punch filled with sumptuous smoked burrata and noisette butter. Elsewhere the Roast Wild Turbot served with English Asparagus and caramelised shallots is cooked to perfection; as is the Organic Shetland Salmon. Dessert, if you can manage is also very tempting. The Roasted pineapple with salted caramel ice cream is a must order dessert, while the Tiramisu with crunchy almond and chocolate crisp is simply divine. Also worth noting is the vegan Cheese-less ‘Cheesecake’ with almonds, dates, carrots and orange. Alongside a very innovative cocktail and wine lists, the bar also serves a range of juices and hot drinks with delicious healthy eating at the forefront. This really is a menu of two kinds, effortlessly fusing together simple cooking and rich heritage of two cultures to create a true taste sensation for diners.

Emilia's

With the original location in St Katherine Docks, Emilia’s Crafted Pasta has launched a second site in the vibrant area of Aldgate. Providing the perfect neighbourhood dining room for a delicious spot of pasta and antipasti, Emilia’s Crafted Pasta is the brainchild of 27 year old restauranteur Andrew Macleod. Inspired by his visits across Italy, Andrew spent 18 months learning from local Italian chefs who extolled an extraordinary passion for cooking recipes passed down through the generations. Andrew has lovingly brought these practices to London enticing pasta lovers to embrace the joy of the original dishes. A fine example of this is Emilia’s carbonara. Made the Northern Italian way using whole eggs to make it a little lighter and pecorino rather than Parmesan, along with plenty of pancetta and black pepper. Chef ’s at Emilia’s Pasta use bucatini pasta (think spaghetti with a hole going through the middle) which ensures the creamy sauce is distributed perfectly and captured in every mouthful. Although small, Andrew has carefully curated a menu that pays homage to the original dishes from various regions in Italy, along with careful pairing of pasta shapes with sauces - the weight, texture and size of the pasta each complementing the sauce. Only the finest ingredients are used with some sourced directly from local and sustainable suppliers in both Italy and the UK. Specials are available, along with fresh salads and sides. Antipasti sharing starters include the delicious Burrata with toasted ciabatta and a drizzle of extra virgin oil. Other menu highlights include 4 hour slow cooked creamy béchamel bolognese with grated parmesan; handmade ravioli with organic lamb, parsley, and parmesan in a light butter and sage sauce; and flaked yellowfin tuna fillet with homemade tomato sauce, peperoncino and freshly chopped parsley. A lovely note to be made about the menu is that the origins of the dishes are listed. The last dish for example, is thought have been first served in Sicily at least 150 years ago. Wash it all down with a wine from the short but sweet wine list, which is made up of predominantly Italian vintages such as Conviviale Primitivo Del Salento from Apuglia and Il Cascione Camillona from Piedmont. Elsewhere a range of Italian cocktails are available, as well as a unique Italian craft beer selection. For dessert the salted caramel chocolate brownie is not to be missed. With just 55 covers, the vibrant local restaurant is perfectly suited for the area and welcomes both friends and business colleagues alike. The large open kitchen only adds to the inviting atmosphere. Emilia’s Crafted Pasta, 77 Alie Street, London E1 8NH | emiliaspasta.com

CHAMPAGNE

Green Is The New Glam Françoise Peretti, Director of the UK’s, Champagne Bureau, gives eco-conscious drinkers the greenlight… When people think of champagne, the word ‘sustainability’ might not be the first to spring to mind. Terms such as ‘glamour’, ‘wealth’ or ‘hedonism’ are more likely contenders – and yet Champagne was the first ever wine region to create, implement and adopt a collective environmentally-friendly programme and has done so since 2001. This movement is something that only continues to gain momentum in 2019. The strategy was implemented by Comité Champagne, the trade organisation that brings together all 320 houses, 16,000 winegrowers and 140 cooperatives under one roof to represent their collective interests. Despite hitting its record turnover of €4.9 billion in 2018, the industry as a whole recognises that its future is contingent on protection of the environment that produces its

grapes. Anyone who has witnessed the 34,000 hectares of rolling vineyards that make up the Champagne hillsides (classified as UNESCO since 2014), understands how the livelihoods of the Champenois are quite literally rooted in their surroundings and inextricably linked to nature. Since the start of the programme champagne has cut down the carbon footprint per champagne bottle by 20%. This has been done by reducing the weight of its iconic glass bottles with new technology. To protect the living flora and fauna, winegrowers have educed the use of vine protection products and fertilisers by 50% and now treat 100% of all winery waste water. In terms of recycling, vignerons now recover and re-use 100% of by-products and 90% of all waste.

COLUMN

Experimental research and trials

Commitments to the future

Taking measures against climate change, the region has an experimental vineyard at Plumecoq, located between 3 key areas the Côte des Blancs, Vallée de la Marne and Montagne de Reims. Here, Comité Champagne are developing new species of hybrid grapes that are able to better withstand disease and will respond well in a warmer climate if needed. As one of the most Northern winegrowing regions in the world, Champagne benefits from a colder climate and harsher weather conditions. It has a dual climate that has both oceanic and continental influence, bringing steady rainfall and ideal levels of sun in the summer (although this often leads to harsh frosts). The average temperature of the region is around 11 degrees celsius, which leads to a slower ripening of the grapes than in many other wine regions. Slower ripening is responsible for lower natural sugar content in the fruit, which in turn produces the fresh acidity that champagne is revered for. The region has also been integral in the developing of ‘mating disruption’ techniques that can be used on insects. Currently trialling in 17,000 hectares of land, it involves strategically placing racks that exude insect hormones that confuse individual insects and disrupt them from finding their mates (and thus multiplying).

In 2014, the same year as the UNESCO world heritage site listing for the Champagne Houses, Hillsides and Cellars, The Viticulture Durable en Champagne (VDC) sustainability certification scheme was introduced by the Comité Champagne. In addition to biodiversity and phytosanitary strategy, water management and fertilisation, the manual adds measures relating to the protection of landscapes, terroir preservation, management of waste and reduction in carbon footprint. Currently, 20% of all vineyards are under environmental certification – 15% under VDC, 2.5% under organic certification and 2.5% under other accredited schemes. The region is pushing for this to be 100% by 2030. Champagne has also committed to use zero herbicides by 2025 and finally, to a reduction of 25% on its total carbon footprint by 2025. As the creators of the original sparkling wine, Champagne’s excellence has always been about leading the way. In this sense, it only seems fitting that following 300 years of innovation at the pinnacle of the sparkling wine pyramid, the next step is to set an example; paving the way for the next generation through sustainable practices. I’ll raise a glass to that.

SOROLLA THE NATIONAL GALLERY

Running until the 7th July, Oliver Peyton’s restaurants, The National Dining Rooms and The National Cafe are celebrating the latest exhibition - ‘Sorolla: Spanish Master of Light’ with a special limited edition Spanish menu. Inspired by the iridescent canvases of renowned Spanish painter, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastidas, the Sorolla exhibition features more than 60 works spanning Sorolla's career - many of which are travelling from private collections and from afar. With this in mind the menu is packed with Iberian flavours. Begin with tempting tapas-style with starters of Smoked Ham and Manchego Croquettes with pimento aioli, or a simple plate of Pata Negra, served with pickles and artichokes.

Main highlights include a hearty fillet of Blackened Hake in Romesco Sauce and almond olive dressing, or Vegetable Paella with sprouting broccoli, asparagus, padron peppers and saffron. The Chicken salad is also a delight with plenty of spicy chorizo and chickpeas. Dessert comes in the form of traditional Crema Catalana or Tarta de Santiago served with clotted cream. Exceptionally priced at £19 for two courses or £24 for three. Diners have the option of stopping by after 3pm for wine and tapas. Two glasses of Spanish wine with a slice of tortilla and pan con tomate costs just £12. With the Gallery’s Friday Lates, the special menu is the perfect start to the weekend. The National Cafe in particular makes for a lovely location to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, with a calming and elegant colour palette of neutral tones, greys and light pinks. The high ceilings make for a welcoming setting to discuss any favourite pieces from the exhibition.

Sunday Garden Brunch at the Montagu Kitchen

Located in the heart of Marylebone in London’s West End and overlooking the very charming Portman Square Gardens, The Montagu Kitchen is a superb all-day dining destination which is perfect for socialising in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Situated within the Hyatt Regency London – The Churchill, The Montagu Kitchen launched a new Sunday Garden Brunch menu this April in celebration of the best of fresh British seasonal produce, many of which is sourced from local Kent suppliers. Guests can indulge in bottomless champagne and oysters and dishes inspired by the National Trust’s Chartwell House and Gardens in the beautiful Kent countryside which was once the private home of Sir Winston Churchill. The fabulous menu aims to reconnect diners with nature through simple dishes that bring a little bit of the gardens at Chartwell to the city. With nature also being the theme of the interior of the restaurant, the subtle lighting and floral displays create a very convivial atmosphere and a perfect setting in which to enjoy the new offering. Boasting an extensive array of bottomless homemade dishes, guests can watch skilled chefs at work in the impressive open kitchen. Highlights include British dishes available from the starter buffet such as Whitstable oysters, Chiltern charcuterie salami, homemade Dingley Dell pork pie; various salads such as The Montagu Kitchen Waldorf salad or Kent Ratte potatoes and green bean salad. British classics available to order include a choice of organic free-range eggs Benedict, Royal or Florentine. Moving on to the mains, guests can choose from the hugely popular Dingley Dell pork belly served with apple cider, red chicory and textures and temperatures of Kent apple jus or pan seared catch of the day with roasted potatoes and mixed seasonal vegetables. Something that is becoming increasingly popular as a vegetarian option is on the Josper cauliflower steak served with beetroot mash, cauliflower and broccoli florettes.

The British theme is apparent in the miniature desserts which are scrumptious little treats beautifully presented on a wooden stand. If you are a sweet lover you will not be disappointed as you feast your eyes on the superb display of miniature Pol Roger champagne truffle lollipops, colourful salted Kent honeycomb macaroons and delicious little layered lavender sponges to name a few. If you do have any room left, The Montagu Kitchen boasts a great selection of Kent and British cheeses including Kentish Blue and Canterbury Cobble and homemade chutneys to round-off the meal. Very reasonably priced and with something to suit everyone, the Garden Brunch is £58 for the non-alcoholic and soft drinks option and £78 for bottomless Champagne per person. Guests can enjoy an extended sitting from 12.30pm to 15.00pm every Sunday in one of the few London restaurants to offer bottomless champagne and oysters throughout this time. Wine and beer is also an option, as well as a non-alcoholic drinks menu which includes delicious mocktails and juices.

Audi's Taut TT Quattro A CoupĂŠ Quattro With Style

Taking heed of the latest design code from the German powerhouse, the 2019 TT is not only a car to reckoned with on the road, but one to be enjoyed from every angle. Now offering a package verging on it's extreme R8 counterpart with added functionality in the TT RS, the 2.0-Litre TT has plenty to offer in its own right.

AUDI TT QUATTRO

TT

QUATTRO

Taking its name from the globally renowned Isle of Man event, Audi’s compact coupe, the TT, was always meant for big things and now, with a new look and substance to match, it has reached a new stage in its evolution. Bringing a considerably more aggressive aesthetic to the table with the implementation of the marque’s latest design cues, the TT Coupé now possesses the looks to match its driving performance. Always one to take advantage of its low profile and wide stance, the latest iteration simply builds on this 20 year history and brings it to a new level. The ever impressive Quattro all-wheel drive

system continues to enhance the drive, comfort and composure while the Audi Drive Select system offers the option to adapt and change the car’s feel at the touch of a button. Cruising in comfort mode delivers a much more relaxing experience than previous versions thanks to improvements to the adaptive suspension despite the relatively short wheelbase the car enjoys. This is where you really notice the difference however. Slip it into dynamic and enjoy a stiffened suspension setup combined with this short, wide stance and you get an immensely enjoyable driving experience. Pair this then with the impressive upgraded audi.co.uk

YOUR DRIVE 2.0-litre TFSI engine which now produces 245 PS - 15 more than the previous version without any major unit changes - and you start to see where Audi are pushing this car. Supporting its bigger engined TT RS counterpart, the 2.0-litre Quattro provides the perfect package to enjoy a taste of its performance partner while still maintaining a certain level of decorum on the road and a certain degree of extra comfort. The adaptability of moving between comfort and dynamic allows you to fully take advantage of every aspect this car has to offer. The cars reserved 2+2 setup doesn’t leave much in the way of accessibility to the rear, but in all honesty, you won’t be buying this car for its rear cabin space. Think of it as additional storage atop the already impressive boot space the car affords. All of the important seats

suited to driving. You won’t find any unnecessary switches or buttons, just exactly what you need for a comfortable and pleasant experience without distraction. Smart heated seat buttons are integrated into the centre of the side air vents on either side for easy access and a clean aesthetic with everything setup to provide an easy to use and elegantly designed interface for both driver and passenger.

- the drivers, for example - is more than equipped enough to deliver some serious driving pleasure and keep you securely nestled in its deep wings whilst you try to dislodge your passenger. And that might be easier than you think thanks to its incredible cornering ability. Its short wheelbase along with the Quattro system and wide stance provide the perfect ingredients for a cornering masterclass. Your passenger might not appreciate it as much as you though, so always check before you attempt to get this thing sideways - not that it will be easy. Inside, the TT takes note of its big sister’s interior, making use of the driver focused, in-dash digital display from the R8 that can be adapted and altered to suit your needs while freeing up space across the rest of the dashboard to create a clean, open interior perfectly

All of the cars driving, entertainment and navigation systems are accessible through the centre console with select shortcut buttons included for swifter access and ease of use with everything being meticulously thought out and designed with driver and passenger in mind. Taking the focus away from the interior whilst still managing to create such a clean, sleek and aesthetically pleasing space is truly a talent, but the team at Audi have managed to achieve it. This car audi.co.uk

Audi TT Quattro Engine 2.0-Litre TFSI Power (PS) 245 370 Torque (Nm) 0-62mph (secs) 5.2 Max Speed (mph) 155 Transmission 7-Speed Dual Clutch S-Tronic Fuel Consumption (mpg) 34.9 Carbon Dioxide Emissions (g/km) 160 Price (from) £36,500

AUDI TT QUATTRO

is all about driving, it wouldn’t be worthy of its name if it was anything but, and Audi have been keen to remember that with this latest version. It’s not that the interior is sub-par in appearance or that they haven’t put any effort into it, or even that it isn’t functional. Quite simply, Audi have created an interior cabin taking design cues from their top-end performance car and integrated it into a comfortable and welcoming space perfect for taking a weekend drive in the country or hitting the track for a few laps. And that’s exactly what this car was made to do...everything. It’s adaptable system and dual clutch, 7-speed S tronic transmission allow you to

quickly and easily change from smooth, comfort driving at low speed to sharp, reactive driving at speed and both are an absolute joy to behold. A truly pleasurable experience, sitting in the cockpit of this marvel is worthy of any time, day or situation - unless you’re planning any serious offroading, the Quattro system can only do so much with this kind of ground clearance! Expert design is not reserved for the interior either. Sharp lines and angular features make for an exciting and aggressive exterior look that only highlight the cars profile and intent. The large front grille synonymous with the brand continues the new design ethos, with its precise trapezoid shape cutting through the smooth bodywork in line with the angular bonnet line which enhances the aggressive aesthetic of the headlight clusters. Supported by vast, gaping vents in the lower corners, the appeal of this car is not just what lies beneath. Large, beautifully crafted wheels that can of course be picked from a stunning lineup add to the appeal with split rim options as pictured that add that extra piece of drama - not that it was missing. Bulging wheel arches are a continuation from the original TT maintaining at least a little continuity, however you will struggle to find many similarities between this and the bubblelike first release. Cut edges on the arches add an audi.co.uk

YOUR DRIVE extra touch, and the striking body line which continues from the bonnet all the way to the subtle rear spoiler aids in the cars wide profile and simultaneously increases the low, sleek appearance of the car. It’s rounded roof is elongated to the rear, again enhancing the profile of the car and immediately offering up a sense of speed ever when it’s completely stationary. The rear of the TT enjoys further aggressive detailing, including more sharp lines running across the car, an automated rear spoiler and a rear diffuser that hints at the brands motorsport prowess which houses a stunning dual exhaust system. Thanks to this system working with that impressive 2.0-litre which produces 245 PS and 370 Nm of torque, you can put your foot down and enjoy a soundtrack that will never get boring. During ‘normal’ driving, the tone is muted and somewhat indistinguishable while driving - a good thing - however, slip into dynamic or shift the automatic ‘box into sport and the engine comes alive with the exhaust noise reacting appropriately. This car is not just a fantastic sports coupé, but a car that offers something for almost everyone. Comfort, performance, visual

appeal and space - as long as you consider it a two-seater rather than the 2+2 it boasts - making an inviting prospect for a huge demographic. Those in the market for a sports car will welcome the justifiable price tag while those after a small commuter car - that possesses a surprising 305 litres of luggage space - can enjoy the 34.9 mpg consumption figures and 160 g/km emissions number, both incredible when you consider what this car can achieve. Zero to sixty-two in just 5.2 seconds and a top speed of 155 won’t leave you wanting much more in real world driving and certainly not when there’s this much style on offer. It is a truly stunning car for the money and one that should not be ignored. Previous versions may have had you feeling like there was a little left to be desired, but Audi have recognised and reacted to create a spectacular car in the new TT Quattro. Just make sure you take the time to enjoy every aspect of it, it’s not just for driving in comfortable style, nor is it simply a road racing vehicle, it offers a plethora of answers to any driving situation and each should be explored and enjoyed in detail.

1948 Triumph TR Roadster £POA

Post-War Triumph Designed during the final days of World War II, Standard Motor Company’s stunning Triumph Roadster took advantage of the early post-war steel shortages by making the body from aluminium. Using rubber press tools that had been used for making panels for the Mosquito bomber by Standard during the war, the rolling body lines make for a beautiful profile. Supported by an upgraded version of the 1.5-litre engine built by Standard exclusively for SS-Jaguar before World War II, the Roadster boasted a fourspeed gearbox with synchromesh on the top three ratios. Transverse leaf sprung independent suspension features at the front, with a live axle and semi-elliptic springs at the rear. The rear track is also a whopping 4 inches wider than the front, not so subtly disguised by the bulbous rear arches. This example features the desirable colour combination of white coachwork and red leather interior finished perfectly with chrome detailing throughout. The headlight, horn and bumper array sit proudly at the front with a striking set-back grille. Chromed wheels

and white-wall tires complete the look along with the fold away soft top and ‘dickey seat’ in the rear. A very well maintained car, the paintwork and interior are in excellent condition as is the drive thanks to recent mechanical attention including an engine upgrade and floor gearchange upgrade. An excellent example that must be seen to be fully appreciated.

Pace, Price & Peace of Mind what landlords need to know

with Jane Cronwright-Brown, Head of Savills Lettings

I’ve worked in the residential lettings business for nearly 30 years, a time in which renting in the UK has changed almost beyond recognition. When I first set out, the 1988 Housing Act was just starting to revolutionise the market for private landlords and tenants. Previously, landlords had little real control over tenancies and feared that, once let, they would never get their property back. They preferred to minimise the risk and deal mainly with companies in search of accommodation for employees. The introduction of assured shorthold tenancies changed that and confidence in the private rentals sector grew. Over the years, and through downturns and recoveries, one of the things that has struck me most is how attitudes have changed regarding letting. The perception of what it means to be a landlord and tenant has undergone a real shift, driven by economic necessity certainly but also increasingly by choice. It’s not uncommon now for a family to rent in order to be near a good school, for

example, letting out their old home in the meantime. Today’s industry is governed by more than 450 pieces of legislation from vital health and safety standards to rules over handling deposits. Get it wrong and a landlord can be in trouble. That’s where an experienced agent can add value: think three P’s pace, price and, most important of all, peace of mind.

A good agent should be able to show how quickly they can find a tenant and advise on achievable rental values. They should be able to pinpoint what, if anything, needs to be done to the property and how to do it. Landlords should also choose an agent who is a member of a regulatory body such as ARLA Propertymark, of which I’m a past president (that advice goes for tenants too). Before venturing into lettings all those years ago, I trained as a classical dancer at the Royal Ballet School. The similarity between those two worlds may not be immediately apparent but both can be tough and challenging. I learned a mindset then that serves me well every single day – that discipline, practice and more practice get results. Just when you think you’ve reached the limit of your abilities, you try that little bit harder. And, as I constantly tell my colleagues, you realise that every experience can be turned into a positive lesson. I’m an optimist by nature and a bit of a perfectionist. That was good; how can I make it better? OK, back to those three P’s. I think I’ll make that four. Pirouette. Can I really do another one? Let’s go for it. I think that there are few things in life that you can trust more to enrich your family than the property they live in. While this is true in terms of the memories it creates and the special moments it hosts, it's also true in terms of cold, hard material gain. Since 2000, the average E14 home has increased in price by 146.5 per cent. The best performing property type has been semi detached properties which have increased by 333 per cent, equivalent to £35,100 per year. The reason this particular type of home has outperformed the rest is down to a number of factors, but in essence it’s simply down to this type of home being very rare in E14.

For anyone who has ever spent much time here, the Year attractions are fairly obvious. A great balance of firstrate housing stock, solid transport accessibility and ready access to the amenities we need the most. It is these factors which explain why our area has outperformed the national market during this period of cooling which has been felt in many parts of the country. The popularity of E14 as a place to live is unlikely to diminish any time soon. If you’re considering buying or selling in this area, now is the ideal time. There are great opportunities for buyers and sellers in every corner of the market. As long as you work with a local market expert, you’re destined to win big. Spencer Fortag

Local tenure patterns The tenure mix of properties really defines what makes the local market tick. This chart shows how many people own, rent privately and rent from the council or a housing association. It's very interesting to see how this changed between the last two censuses. In most, but not all of the country, private renting has increased substantially.
