Mountain Biking on the Sunny Coast By Andy Flanagan

“WHAT’S this mountain biking thing all about?” you may well be asking.

Your significant other may be talking about spending your next holiday savings on a new bike, or your kids might be hounding you for a new full suspension.

These bikes are mountain beasts that could potentially cost more than a small car.

It’s not a fad - it’s here to stay and it can be lots of fun for the whole family.

Mountain biking clubs and trail centres are popping up all over the place and related tourism is growing fast.

On the Sunshine Coast alone we have five purpose-built trail centres plus kilometres of scenic fire roads and single trails suitable for beginner to advanced riders.

Most have been professionally built and maintained with public and private funding plus many volunteer hours from local club members and advocates, and they are totally free for all to use.

At the northern end of the coast, we have the Victory Heights Trail Centre in Gympie, Wooroi trails in Tewantin – and further south we have Parklands near Nambour, Sugarbag Road trails in Caloundra, and The Bone Yards and Ferny Forest near Landsborough.

Each of them has 15-30km or more of skill-graded mountain bike trails, colourcoded to suit beginners, intermediates and experts – there’s something for everyone, and you don’t need to spend a small fortune in equipment to enjoy them.

In following editions, we will take a look at each of these trail centres, equipment, riding styles, safety - and even some phone apps for trail information and navigation. Until then ride safe and have fun, Andy. Unicyclist, Mountain biker, Trail runner and senior bicycle mechanic at Spoke N Trail.

There’s something for everyone!

‘We genuinely give a SHED!’

TWO teams from our Cooroy 8 Ball Club went to Gympie to play in the Best of the West competition For our A/B team we had Shaun Lorenz, Jase Cattermoul, Christopher Snare, Frank Davis, Stewart Holder and Locky Inmon… they played awesome pool all weekend but unfortunately we missed out on the gold. For our B/C team we had Bec Jones, James Buchanan, Mandy Snare, Rebecca Moran, Nathan Jones, Matt Smith ….out of the weekend this team had only one loss out of the five matches played and finished the rounds on top putting them into the grand final. Then playing against Ipswich they unfortunately came second, but be proud team it was an amazing outcome and you all played fantastic. And to finish it off we had out of the B/C grade team, James coming out on top with the highest wins percentage for B grade. Rebecca tied for the highest wins percentage for C grade overall. Well done guys!

It ain’t ‘weak to speak’

IMPACT Boxing and Fitness Centre will again be hosting another Suicide prevention BBQ and workshop on Saturday September 11. Off the back of our recent successful Barbed Wire BBQ for men’s mental health, we will be changing things up a little for our next one.

This upcoming event we will have a guest facilitator who will deliver a Safe Talk workshop. The word Safe stands for - Suicide awareness for everyone - The word Talk means - chat to people, tell, ask, listen. The aim of this workshop is to get more people talking about suicide and to help provide us with the tools to recognise that someone may not be feeling well and how we can help keep them safe.

To register for this event please follow the link on the flyer.
