Those that are willing to make a move are opting to switch to other areas in Miami, other cities in Florida or out of state. T
here is an abundance of magnificent homes in North Naples, and this remodel in the prestigious Heritage Bay Golf & Country Club is certainly at the top of the list. This 2,374-square-foot, three-bedroom, three-bath sanctuary features serene lake views, a breathtaking outdoor pool and spa, an open-floor concept, and plenty of unique, modern architectural elements in every room. A well-equipped kitchen with custom cabinets and tile, exquisite his and hers bath, complementary brick pavers, dramatic lighting, and a special wine-tasting area, all serve to showcase the home’s ambiance. Diana Hall, President and Lead Designer of Diana Hall Design in Naples, collaborated with her associate and Senior Designer Elizabeth Manchego, when she was brought on board by Naples Kitchen & Bath, who designed the initial architectural background, including ceilings, coffers, and one-of-a-kind fireplace. “The detailing was done by Naples Kitchen & Bath—they wanted to make the home modern, streamlined, and spacious looking,” explains Hall. “Elizabeth and I tend to have this sensitive eye, so our objective was to ensure that everything was cohesive before the project was completed.” The designers also wanted to achieve a look of elegance and creativity that optimized every space in the residence. “The rooms were small so we wanted to make design

decisions that optimized the space,” Hall says. She and her associate carried a monochromatic color scheme, with blues added, throughout the home, which gave it a more spacious look, as well. The client, who has owned the house for quite some time and remodeled it in the beginning of 2021, wanted specific architectural details in each room. One of the designer’s favorite elements from this project, for example, is the master bedroom headboard wall, for which her firm won a 2021 CBIA (Collier Building Industry Association) Sand Dollar Award for “Best Specialty Feature Under $25,000.”

Comfy, cozy seating in the great room focuses on conversational opportunities. The architectural focal point is the enticing stone wall by Ceramic Matrix, complete with mesmerizing ventless linear fireplace and large, entertaining TV. Glass shelves provide the perfect way to display lovely accessories, and cabinets underneath that were added for storage, present a floating, airy feel. Again, the designer introduces colors of gray, beige, blue, and white. The pair of chairs on the right are by Fairfield and the one on the left is manufactured by Rowe. “They are nicely accompanied by their tapered arms,” Hall explains. “The Rowe chair has an interesting chrome frame with a T-shaped chromed back.” The designers incorporated a modern touch with an organic glass-topped table. The base, by Bernhardt, is white resin formed to look like a tree trunk. “Lamps and the tables that they’re sitting on are both an airy mix of glass and metal,” she adds. “We selected a three-panel glass door to continue with the open concept.” The dramatic architectural ceiling detail is echoed from the master bedroom for a cohesive look.

Preparing meals has never been more convenient or enjoyable than in this well-equipped, brightly lit kitchen. Stainless steel appliances mesh beautifully with a white and gray background, white island table, and even a cushy seating nook. Pure white cabinets with a shaker style spark attention. “We took the cabinets to the ceiling and added glass doors with lighting for effect,” Manchego explains. Modern, streamlined barstools are by Interlude; the backsplash tile is an iridescent glass by Lunada Bay. Accents like the artwork that bring blues into the kitchen are another feature that makes the room unique and colorful, while a wine-tasting area with two chairs offers an intimate setting to snuggle up in with a glass of Chardonnay. Lincoln white countertops are by Pompei; distinctive lighting is designed by Hinkley. Beyond, a spectacular lanai, complete with inviting pool and fireplace, awaits.

Stylish seating for six elevates casual family meals to a stately occasion. A modern, streamlined chandelier—an LED glass lobe cluster by Kuzco Lighting—illuminates a unique organic-wood tabletop. To make the most of the smaller space, Hall placed a built-in dining buffet with ample storage against the wall. “The client loves wine, so they wanted to display their collection and we felt that peg mounting them on the wall made them a part of the art in this room,” Hall says. “We used the same stacked stone as the fireplace in the living room.” The center of the back wall showcases a backlit panel of wood that holds very special artwork in a lucite shadow box style. The wood floor throughout is Giuseppina wide-plank oak by Legno Bastone. A stunning canvas of blues, grays, and beiges on the far wall reinforces the familiar color palette; chrome accents are carried over from the great room.

The master bedroom calms and soothes in the color palette that is prevalent throughout the home. “The client wanted a very special master suite that was really reminiscent of a hotel room,” Hall says. “The owners are also very organized and don’t like clutter so we created an elegant space with plenty of storage.” Sconces, designed by Kelly Wearstler, were added on either side of an award-winning headboard wall made out of silk panels by James Hare. Flanking the distinctive headboard are hand-finished wood panels with floating nightstands, which “give the feel of extra space because they’re not sitting on the floor,” Hall adds. The bed and Stroheim fabric drapes were created by Diana Hall Design’s upholstery company, Raebecca Drapery by Design. The abstract artwork is by Benson and Cobbs. The beautiful ceiling, which is divided up into coffers to attract interest, was designed by Naples Kitchen & Bath. Adding to the aura are the golf course and lake views.

The configuration of the master bath was completely changed by Hall and Manchego. A grand center column of Carrera marble in a herringbone pattern, with tiles by Happy Floors, wraps around and extends into the shower, giving the room a flowing feel. “They had a corner tub next to the window and the space felt small to us. We knew we could create a better flow in this important room,” Hall explains. “We opened it up by swapping out the tub for a big walk-in shower with two showerheads—his and hers.” This ‘his and hers’ concept carries over to the facing two sinks and warm gray custom cabinets; the classic sconces mounted on the mirrors are by Hinkley. Here, the color scheme is neutral, peaceful, and spa-like, with warm grays and whites, a polished porcelain floor, and bright white quartz countertops. Even the accent pieces blend with the vanities and other elements.

What better way to savor the sights and sounds of North Naples than on the splendid covered lanai. The alluring wood-stained ceiling of cypress wood infuses the room with a rich look; the coastal-style light furniture, detailed with extruded aluminum frames and faux teak arm caps, is by Cabana Coast. An eyecatching pebble cocktail table from the Phillips Collection enchants with charm and whimsy. “We like to do what we call ‘chat areas’ because it’s perfect seating for two couples,” Manchego expresses. Small cast aluminum drink tables serve to accessorize with a distinctive, contemporary edge. The glass door on the right leads to the dry bar next to the kitchen, while the slider on the left ushers all to the great room.

Refreshingly elegant, the home’s expansive outdoor pool and spa offers a place to unwind and swim away the cares of the day. Two majestic fire bowls introduce drama into the screened-in backyard paradise. At the far end sits a gas fire pit with four woven swivel chairs. A fully furnished, practical outdoor kitchen features bar seating; close by is a sleekly designed floating grill area. Topping off the grand space are luxurious lit fountains springing out of the pool. “The pool and outdoor area were very important to the owners,” Hall says. “When looking out, you see the pool and beyond that, a lake and that is a central feature the home is built around. We wanted to highlight that view in our design so furniture has been chosen and arranged so as to not obstruct the view.” Here is a great space for socializing and entertaining—top priorities of the owners. Again, the peaceful, serene, “just exhale” feeling that the owners desired was accomplished with the use of different textures, like the fireplace wall, chrome, wood, silk, and organic tables, subtle lighting, and soothing hues.

While we know more than ever about this amazing organ, we have barely scratched the surface of understanding. While there are always new products offered to consumers with the promise of promoting a healthy brain, going back to the basics is key. Supplements can help, but you can make long term changes by adding brain-supporting foods into your diet and eliminating things that might be causing damage. This year, as you focus on your health, consider incorporating foods that will help your brain stay sharp. Here are some tasty items that can help you optimize your mind. Fatty fish is at the top of the list with salmon, trout, albacore tuna, herring, and sardines; all fantastic for the brain. These fish varieties are rich sources of Omega-3 fatty acids which not only promote brain health, they also help alleviate depression and anxiety. About 60% of your brain is made of fat, and half of that fat are Omega-3 fatty acids, so this is an important nutrient to include in your diet. Blueberries also offer numerous health benefits; many that specifically target your brain. They contain anthocyanins, a group of plant compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Antioxidants act against both oxidative stress and inflammation— conditions that can contribute to brain aging

and neurodegenerative diseases. Some of the antioxidants in blueberries have been found to accumulate in the brain and help improve communication between brain cells. According to one review of 11 scientific studies, blueberries can help improve memory and certain cognitive processes in children and older adults. If you’re looking for a fun way to incorporate them into your diet, check out page 43 for a delicious blueberry smoothie bowl recipe. It’s hardly a chore to add some chocolate into
your life and thankfully, dark chocolate and cocoa powder are packed with brain-boosting compounds, including flavonoids, caffeine, and antioxidants. The flavonoids (beneficial antioxidant compounds) in dark chocolate gather in the areas of the brain that contribute to learning and memory. Researchers believe these compounds might enhance memory and help slow down age-related mental decline. According to one study of over 900 people, those who ate chocolate more frequently performed better in a series of mental tasks
TURMERIC Turmeric is the key spice in curry that gives it the yellow color. Curcumin, the most commonly studied compound in turmeric, is known for its ability to reduce inflammation, which can help in the prevention of diseases like diabetes, arthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease. A recent study found that aromatic-turmerone, another compound in the spice, may help brain cells repair themselves. Although turmeric is common in curry, you can get this spice on its own. It has a mild, smoky flavor, making it easy to add to any dish. Sprinkle it on steamed vegetables, or add color and flavor to fish and chicken. It also makes a great natural food dye.
CINNAMON A common household spice, it could be labeled as a superfood with its antioxidant content, ranking up there with blueberries and pomegranates. It also has the added benefit of reducing inflammation, fighting bacteria, and making you more alert. It has been shown that cinnamon can increase cognitive functioning, even just through smell alone, and might even be a possible treatment to enhance cognition in the elderly and people with symptoms of dementia. When adding cinnamon to your daily diet, a little goes a long way. Just one half to one teaspoon a day is all you need. That’s a little sprinkle in your coffee, cereal, oatmeal, or toast. For an added kick at dinner, try adding cinnamon to a spice rub with your favorite peppery spices.

This is a great spice for those suffering from depression. In studies, saffron in supplement form has shown to greatly reduce depression symptoms. As a spice, saffron has an intense flavor, so just use a tiny pinch. Harvested from the flower of Crocus Sativus, the vivid crimson stigma and styles, called threads, are collected and dried for use mainly as a seasoning and coloring agent in food. Saffron has long been the world's most expensive spice by weight. Originally found in the Middle East, saffron is still most commonly used in Mediterranean, Asian, and European cuisine.
BLACK PEPPER One of the most commonly bought and used spices in the world, Black pepper may have quite a few brainboosting effects. Studies have shown that piperine, the primary component in black pepper, can help improve brain function and lower depression symptoms. It’s also great to pair with other foods and spices, especially turmeric, because it may improve the bioavailability of nutrients in other foods, meaning your body absorbs more of the beneficial properties from your other foods.

“The home is laid out really well even with the most expansive rooms feeling very intimate,” says Menaghlazim. This is best seen in the great room, a beautiful space filled with classic materials and textures made new through their treatment. “If we were to give this style a name, I’d say it’s coastal transitional,” explains Menaghlazim. “The materials, like linen and rattan, are familiar, but we’ve chosen shapes that modernize them. The armchairs are a great example. They have clean lines while still bringing that coastal feel to the room.” Driftwood, white, and blue have been used in the space to add a nautical touch and slipcovered couches help keep the space casual—which is important for a beachside home. A hammered tin coffee table adds a little weight to the space and is topped with organic sea elements. On the windows, sheer linen drapery panels are light, giving the space a breezy look.

Creamy white and charcoal cabinets provide a great base for this well-designed kitchen. Menaghlazim points out, “One really unique feature can be found in the upper cabinets. You can see through the glass fronts to a window; that’s not a mirror or an artificial light. We added coral for visual interest and I love this interesting design detail.” Rhinestone quartzite counters top the large island, while a darker and more durable quartz was used on the perimeter. Above the island, hammered metal pendants add shine and texture. Subway tile has been laid in a herringbone pattern behind the gas range. With a mix of Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances, this kitchen is the perfect place to start an island-inspired dinner party.

In the dining room, lighting with rattan woven shades steals the show. “This is another great example of how this classic material can be used in a modern way to create a coastal theme, so a room still feels elevated and design-forward,” says Menaghlazim. Canvascovered chairs flank a glasstopped table with dark base and metal inlay. Tongue and groove has been used to panel the ceiling for a beachy, yet upscale vibe. Outside, the view of the island and the lanai create a beautiful vista.

A wet bar with floating shelves offers storage and a place to put snacks and drinks during movie night. Flanking the textured sofa, unique lamps with a tribal pattern sit on modern wood and metal side tables. Natural elements like wood and rattan keep the room feeling grounded and organic. On the deck, Boca Grande Pass and Charlotte Harbor enhance the design inside.

Discovering the Value of Antique and Vintage Furniture
W
hat was old is new again as the antique-buying trend continues. Last year we discussed Cottagecore and Grandmillennial, two design concepts that were sweeping the nation. Both concepts include antiques and vintage items, adding depth and texture to homes as they remain beloved design themes, especially by younger people looking to connect with the past. Purchasing already made items that make a lower impact on the environment means that antique furniture is in high demand, as more people focus on sustainable living. Antique furniture also works with a variety of interior design styles, so here are some basic tips for picking quality pieces that will last for generations to come.
Antique vs. Vintage
Usually an item must be at least 100 years old to be considered antique. Something younger than that may still be collectible and valuable, but would be categorized as “vintage.” Understanding this distinction is very important because the age of an item is a major factor in determining its value. This will help you as you search through stores, art fairs, and flea markets—you might be able to score a great deal or keep yourself from getting taken advantage of.

The Value of Antiques
Knowing how to value a piece is an important step that will keep you from spending too much. Sellers can ask any price for an item, but that doesn’t mean it’s worth that price. Here are some of the factors can affect antique values: RARITY: How many of these items are there? CONDITION: Is it in good condition, or does it have wear or damage? AGE: How old is this piece? QUALITY: Is it well-made, and does it feature the best materials? PROVENANCE: What do you know about this item’s history? Once you know more about the antique, you can search the Internet and compare your piece to similar ones on eBay, Ruby Lane, Tias, or other online stores. This should give you a good idea of what your item is selling for in other areas of the country. You can also check online price guides to see if your particular item is listed.
Picking Quality Pieces
Now that you know a little more about the classification and value of antiques, how do you choose a great piece, especially when it comes to furniture? There are so many different eras, woods, and styles so really it comes down to what you love. From William and Mary (antique) to Midcentury modern (vintage) there’s something for everyone. Once you’ve decided on an era, here are a few tips on finding well made pieces.
Drawers
A telltale sign of great craftsmanship can be found in the drawers. Pull them out and look at how they were constructed—this will reveal if the piece was handmade. Look for dovetails joining the sides of the drawers together. Dovetails are locking joints which have been used for centuries thanks to their strength and longevity. This type of joint is constructed from triangular wedge-shaped channels cut into the edge of each side of the drawer box. Also known as an English dovetail, these joints are offset on adjoining sides of the drawer box so they interlock when put together to create a box. Take a look at the inside of the drawer front as well—there should be larger cut marks called kerf marks. These will show you where the cabinet maker was cutting out the dovetails in the drawer. These are the leftover marks from the saw the craftsman was using during the process and it’s a tell-tale sign that it was handmade.

Hardware
While you have the drawer out looking for dovetails, don’t forget to inspect the hardware too. Look at the back of the handle. On a quality piece, you should see a threaded post and a nut securing the brass to the drawer front. If you see what looks to be the top of a slotted or flathead screw, that is an indication that the hardware is newer and the piece might not be worth what the seller is asking.
Signatures, Labels, or Stamps
Always check the backs and undersides of drawers to potentially find pencil marks or chalk signatures that may indicate who made the piece and where it was produced. If the piece you’re interested in doesn’t have drawers, check the back or look under the item to see if something has been signed, labeled, or stamped on there. Keep in mind that signatures are rare on pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries but there should still be clues. From the late 19th century through the 1950s, factory-made furniture would have stamps or impressed/stenciled numbers which correspond to model numbers of designs that were factory-produced. This will help you do some internet research on the furniture to verify authenticity and pricing.
Look for Damage
Keep an eye out for repairs and replacements. A repair means the furniture has been fixed, and replacement means a newer piece that may or may not have been manufactured using the same materials and craftsmanship could be added to the furniture. If you are an avid collector, this could diminish the value of the furniture, but for normal home use, as long as the replacement has been done properly, isn’t immediately visible, and will hold up with time—it shouldn’t be a large deterrent. Pieces are likely to be damaged on the part of the furniture that is subjected to the most wear. For example, we love to tip our chairs backwards, so did people in the past. Check the back of the chair, the upper portion called the crest, and the center supports, or splats, because those are most likely parts to have been repaired or replaced. Heavy chests of drawers have often been pushed rather than lifted. Look at the feet or legs first on these pieces for damage and replacements. Many pieces will sport cracks, so make sure these aren’t in areas that weaken the integrity of the furniture. Most will be fine and are even expected due to the wood expanding and contracting over time with fluctuations in temperature. You should expect to see those in pieces from the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. It’s common, and doesn’t necessarily detract from the value. We hope these tips help you as you hunt for the next treasure for your home!
