How To Keep Your Teeth For Life A Periodontist’s Guide To Healthy Aging

Many people assume that losing teeth is simply a normal part of getting older. Fortunately, that is not true. With proper care and regular periodontal maintenance, most people can keep their natural teeth for life. The key is understanding how aging affects the mouth and taking steps to protect your gums, bone, and teeth before problems develop.

The most common reason adults lose teeth is not cavities — it is periodontal disease. Gum disease is an

infection of the gums and supporting bone caused by plaque and bacteria. Over time, it can destroy the structures that hold teeth in place. The challenge is that periodontal disease is often painless in its early stages. Many people do not realize there is a problem until they notice loose teeth, receding gums, or changes in their bite.

As we age, several factors can increase the risk of gum disease and tooth loss. Many common medications can cause dry mouth, reducing the protective effects of saliva. Saliva helps wash away bacteria and neutralize acids. Without enough saliva, plaque builds up more easily and the risk of both cavities and gum disease increases.

In addition, conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis, and heart disease become more common with age and can affect oral health. Diabetes can make it harder for the body to fight infection and heal. Osteoporosis may weaken the jawbone that

supports the teeth. Arthritis can make brushing and flossing more difficult.

The good news is that there are many ways to protect your smile:

• Brush twice daily with a softbristled toothbrush or electric toothbrush.

• Clean between your teeth every day with floss, interdental brushes, or a water flosser.

• See your dentist and periodontist regularly, even if your mouth feels fine.

• Keep medical conditions such as diabetes well controlled.

• Avoid smoking, which greatly increases the risk of gum disease and tooth loss.

• Report symptoms such as bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession, or loose teeth promptly.

For patients who have already been treated for gum disease or have dental implants, periodontal maintenance visits are especially important. These visits help remove bacteria

from below the gumline and allow us to detect problems early, before they become more serious.

Healthy aging includes protecting your smile. With preventive care, early treatment, and regular maintenance, it is possible to keep your teeth strong, healthy, and functioning well for a lifetime.

Maintaining good dental hygiene is crucial, and Dr. Marc Stanard, a periodontist and specialist in surgical implant dentistry, can help you achieve healthy teeth comfortably. PAIN Management & Rehabilitation

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.

Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.

Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:

Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.

There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

The prostate, a male organ located below the bladder and wrapping 360 degrees around the urethra, can enlarge with age, restricting urinary flow. This condition, known as

Enlarged Prostate / BPH

benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), often leads to symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urinary stream, and urinary tract infections. Treatment focuses on reducing prostate size and improving urinary flow.

Symptoms Of Enlarged Prostate

Symptoms range from mild to severe, often developing gradually over years but potentially worsening after surgery or other triggers. Common symptoms include:

• Weak urine stream

• Difficulty starting urination

• Incomplete bladder emptying

• Frequent urination, especially at night

• Sudden urge to urinate

• Dribbling or leaking urine

• Straining to urinate

• Recurrent urinary tract infections

Evaluation Methods

Diagnosing an enlarged prostate involves assessing symptoms and determining the severity of urinary blockage. Common tests include:

• Physician evaluation and symptom questionnaires (e.g., IPSS)

• Rectal exam

Innovative Treatments

• PSA blood test

• Cystoscopy (camera-based urethra and bladder examination)

• UroCuff test (measures blockage severity)

• Trans-rectal ultrasound (prostate size assessment)

Treatment Options

Treatment is tailored to individual needs and symptoms, often progressing from lifestyle changes to medical or surgical interventions.

Behavioral Modifications

Simple changes, like reducing evening fluid intake and limiting caffeine or alcohol, can alleviate symptoms.

Medications

Alpha-blockers (e.g., Flomax, Rapaflo): Relax prostate muscles to improve urine flow but may cause side effects like sexual dysfunction or blood pressure changes.

5-alpha-reductase inhibitors (e.g., Proscar, Avodart): Shrink the prostate, potentially enhancing urinary flow, with side effects including erectile dysfunction and breast tenderness.

Office-Based Procedures

UroLift®: A minimally invasive procedure that lifts obstructing prostate tissue out of the way. It is quick, safe, and preserves sexual function, offering long-lasting relief.

Surgical Procedures

Trans-Urethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP): Removes obstructing tissue using electric cautery through the urethra. Though highly effective, it requires significant recovery and may alter sexual function.

Greenlight Laser Prostatectomy: Similar to TURP but uses a laser to vaporize tissue, offering comparable benefits and side effects.

DaVinci Suprapubic Prostatectomy: For very large prostates, this laparoscopic surgery removes obstructing tissue. While highly effective, it involves a more invasive approach with longer recovery times.

BPH is a common condition with a wide range of treatment options. Early diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan can greatly improve quality of life while minimizing complications. Consult a urologist to explore the best option for your needs.

Why Mites Only Target Some People Understanding the “Mite Magnet” Mystery and What You Can Do About It

Exploring the Science Behind Persistent Mite Bites, the Role Of Immunity, and Practical Solutions To Reclaim Your Life

Waking up to sharp, pinprick stings or itchy red bumps while others remain unaffected is unsettling and isolating. You are not alone. Bird or rodent mites are often the cause, and their persistent bites can be frustrating, especially when misdiagnosed. Understanding why mites single out some people is the first step toward regaining peace of mind. Why Mites Target Some People: The Hidden Immune System Factors

Being a “Mite Magnet™” isn’t just bad luck; unique skin chemistry, body heat, and breathing patterns make some people more attractive to mites. Your body’s “scent trail”, including heat, carbon dioxide, and specific chemistry guides mites to you. Even minor changes like medication, diet, or stress can shift your skin chemistry and make you more susceptible. A weak immune system is a major driver of mite attractiveness.

Published data notes that “everyone may be bitten, but some show no symptoms because their immune system doesn’t react, making infestations appear selective or invisible.”

On the contrary, my experience has convinced me that some people are completely spared, in other words,

Please see “Mite Magnet,” page 31

Being Bitten… But No One Believes You?

It could be bird mites or rodent mites – and they’re far more common than you think.

If you’re dealing with constant itching, biting, or crawling sensations… …and you can’t find the source… …and others in your home aren’t affected… You are not imagining it.

These nearly invisible parasites can:

• Enter from bird nests, rodents, or outside sources

• Spread rapidly throughout your home

• Target one or two people – while others feel nothing

• Continue biting day and night

And exterminators won’t treat what they can’t see. Eradizyme™ gives you a way to take control. This ultra-concentrated enzyme formula works differently:

• Breaks down mites at the structural level

• Targets your environment – where the real problem is

• Safe for people, pets, and even skin application

• Replaces harsh chemical pesticides But with the right approach – you can eliminate them. One bottle makes gallons – Treat your entire home Replace multiple products

Mandibular Advancement Appliances Vs. CPAP

Choosing the Right Approach For Better Sleep

Sleep is essential for overall health, yet many people struggle with disrupted breathing at night due to sleep apnea. Two of the most common treatment options are CPAP therapy and mandibular advancement appliances. While both are designed to improve airflow and support better sleep, they work in very different ways. Understanding these differences can help you make a more informed decision about your care.

What Is CPAP Therapy

CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure, uses a machine to deliver a steady stream of air through a mask worn during sleep. This air pressure helps keep the airway open, preventing pauses in breathing that occur with sleep apnea.

CPAP is often considered the standard treatment because of its

effectiveness in reducing breathing interruptions. However, some patients find it difficult to tolerate wearing a mask or sleeping with a machine. What Are Mandibular Advancement Appliances

Mandibular advancement appliances are custom dental devices worn in the mouth during sleep. They work by gently moving the lower jaw forward, which helps keep the airway open and reduces obstruction.

By repositioning the jaw and tongue, these appliances create more space in the airway, allowing for improved breathing throughout the night. They are commonly recommended for mild to moderate sleep apnea or for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP therapy. Comparing Effectiveness and Comfort

Both CPAP and mandibular advancement appliances are effective, but they offer different advantages.

CPAP is highly effective at keeping the airway open and is often recommended for more severe cases of sleep apnea.

Mandibular advancement appliances, while sometimes slightly less effective in clinical measurements, are often easier to wear and more comfortable for many patients. Because of this, patients are more likely to use them consistently, which plays an important role in overall treatment success.

Which Option Is Right For You

The best treatment depends on your specific needs, the severity of your condition, and how well you tolerate each option. Some patients benefit most from CPAP, while others achieve excellent results with a custom oral appliance.

If CPAP feels uncomfortable or difficult to maintain, a mandibular advancement appliance may provide a more manageable and consistent solution. On the other hand, patients with

more advanced sleep apnea may require CPAP to achieve optimal results.

Sleep Apnea Care

Most dentists take a personalized approach to sleep apnea treatment. Their goal is to find a solution that not only improves your breathing but also fits comfortably into your daily life.

For many patients, mandibular advancement appliances offer an effective and convenient alternative to CPAP. These custom devices are designed specifically for your mouth, ensuring a comfortable fit while supporting proper airway function. By understanding your symptoms, lifestyle, and overall health, we can guide you toward the treatment that helps you sleep better, feel more rested, and protect your long term health. Better sleep starts with the right solution. With the right guidance and care, you can find an approach that works for you and supports lasting wellness.

Thin Does Not Always Mean Healthy – Especially For Your Feet

Part 1

Being thin and being healthy are not the same thing. As a podiatrist, I see the consequences of that myth in people’s feet every single week. When most people picture a “healthy” person, they imagine someone thin – but that image is often misleading and, in some cases, harmful.

In my practice, I regularly see thin patients dealing with poor circulation, numb toes, weak muscles, and slow-healing wounds. These are not issues most people associate with someone who “looks healthy,” yet they are more common than you might expect. At the same time, I see heavier patients who walk comfortably, maintain good blood sugar control, and have strong, stable feet. Their bodies may not fit the typical image of health, but functionally, they are doing well.

There is even a medical term for people who appear to be a normal weight but still carry too much unhealthy fat and not enough muscle: normal-weight obesity. This condition increases the risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other serious health problems – even when the scale suggests everything is fine. It is a clear reminder that weight alone does not tell the full story of health. From a foot health standpoint, weight is only one piece of a much bigger picture. What matters more is how your body functions overall. Muscle strength, circulation, nerve health, and how your body distributes pressure with each step all play critical roles in keeping your feet healthy. While it is true that extra weight increases load – just

one additional pound can translate into several pounds of added pressure through your hips, knees, and ankles during movement – low muscle mass and poor conditioning can be just as damaging.

I often treat very thin individuals with stress fractures, tendon injuries, and chronic foot pain because their bodies are simply not strong enough to handle normal daily activity. Being underweight or undernourished can lead to weak bones, low energy, and a higher risk

of injury. In podiatry, this frequently shows up as stress fractures in the metatarsals – the long bones in the front of the foot. It can also appear as persistent tendon pain or plantar fasciitis that does not improve because the body lacks the protein and nutrients needed for proper healing and tissue repair.

One patient stands out – a woman in her early 40s who walked five miles a day and took pride in staying thin. However, her diet consisted mostly of coffee, salad, and snack

bars. She came in with burning pain in both feet, and imaging revealed stress fractures. Her bones and muscles were not getting the support they needed. The solution was not more weight loss. It was better nutrition, strength training, supportive footwear, and time to heal.

The takeaway is simple: thinness does not guarantee strength, resilience, or good health. Especially when it comes to your feet, how your body functions matters far more than how it looks.

Spring Foot Care: Managing Sweaty Feet

As spring brings warmer weather and blossoming flowers, it also heralds the return of foot-related challenges, including plantar hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the feet. This condition can dampen the joy of springtime activities, but with the right approach, you can enjoy the season to its fullest.

Springtime activities often involve shedding winter layers and embracing lighter footwear, making plantar hyperhidrosis more noticeable and potentially uncomfortable. The combination of rising temperatures and increased outdoor excursions can exacerbate sweating, leading to damp feet and heightened discomfort.

The causes of plantar hyperhidrosis, including overactive sweat glands, genetic predisposition, hormonal changes, and environmental factors, remain relevant during springtime. As you prepare to enjoy outdoor adventures and embrace seasonal activities, it’s essential to consider strategies for managing excessive foot sweating.

First and foremost, consulting a podiatrist is paramount for accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment recommendations. Your podiatrist can assess your symptoms, identify contributing factors, and devise a comprehensive management plan to address your specific needs.

Incorporating proactive foot care practices into your springtime routine can help alleviate the discomfort associated with plantar hyperhidrosis. Here are some tips to keep your feet feeling fresh and dry amidst the springtime blooms:

Choose Breathable Footwear: Opt for shoes made of breathable materials, such as mesh or canvas, to promote air circulation and minimize moisture buildup. Avoid tight-fitting or non-breathable footwear, which can trap sweat and exacerbate symptoms.

Wear Moisture-Wicking Socks: Select moisture-wicking socks designed to draw moisture away from

the skin and promote evaporation. Look for socks made of synthetic fibers or merino wool, which can help keep your feet dry and comfortable during springtime activities.

Proper Foot Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene by washing your feet daily with mild soap and warm water. Dry your feet thoroughly, paying special attention to the spaces between your toes, where moisture can accumulate. Applying foot powder or antifungal sprays can help absorb excess moisture and prevent fungal infections.

Use Antiperspirant Products:

Consider using over-the-counter or prescription-strength antiperspirant products specifically formulated for feet. These products can help reduce sweating by blocking sweat gland activity and keeping your feet drier for longer periods.

Rotate Footwear: Alternate between different pairs of shoes to allow each pair to fully dry out between wears. Consider inserting cedar shoe trees or moisture-absorbing shoe inserts into your footwear to help eliminate odors and moisture.

Stay Hydrated: While it may

seem counterintuitive, staying hydrated can actually help regulate sweating by maintaining proper fluid balance in the body. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support overall health and hydration. By incorporating these springtime foot care practices into your routine and seeking guidance from a podiatrist, you can effectively manage plantar hyperhidrosis and enjoy all that spring has to offer with confidence and comfort. Don’t let excessive sweating dampen your springtime spirit!

Our feet are important in our everyday lives. The problem is that we tend to neglect them. When this becomes a habit, it can cause significant trouble. Ignoring foot problems can mean pain, limited mobility, and expensive doctor’s visits. On the other hand, if feet are cared for and looked after regularly, they will perform without pain or complication.

Your Smile & TMD

It is almost impossible to maintain a nice smile when you are hurting, and especially when that pain comes from TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder). When the discs in the jaw joints are out of place, they can and will pinch nerves and blood vessels in the jaw joints. This is a concept that few doctors understand as it was never taught

in school. Such training often requires extensive post-graduate education, and oftentimes that can be very hard to find!

As a patient, you should be aware that there are many ways to treat the TMJ disorder. To figure out which one(s) are right for you, the first step is diagnosing. A proper diagnosis is where it all starts and that means a very good MRI (soft tissue) and CBCT x-ray of the joints. From there, your

course of treatment might include orthotic (non-surgical dental oral appliance treatment), physical therapy, osteopathy, dry needling, acupuncture, massage, and even laser therapy.

At our office, we most frequently use appliance therapy to make space for the displaced discs to return into the socket. Along with your appliances, we oftentimes do massage or laser therapy. This is a specialty treatment. Our massage therapist incorporates the Fotona laser to achieve good energy deep into the tissues to maximize healing. It quite honestly feels “wonderful” according to our patients.

We Are NOT Your Typical Dental Office

When a patient wears an orthotic appliance on their lower teeth, this allows the displaced discs the chance to get back into proper position within the socket. This takes time. Most cases the displacements occurred over the course of years and it often takes a year for those discs to go back into place, if they will at all. In the event that they do not go back where they belong, a minor surgery can be done to put them back into the joints. This is called plication.

Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!” - D. Thomas

“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.”

The other appliance that is used is the ALF. This little wire has the ability to open up the palate which makes it easier to breathe. It can also lower a high palatal vault which allows better nasal breathing. When a person breathes through their nose more, this allows for better production of nitric oxide which helps the body to heal better. It also helps level the cranial bones to some extent and thus reduce asymmetry of the skull. This little device really is amazing. Admittedly, it takes years of training to get a handle on it, but it is well worth it.

Ultimately, when a TMD case has healed or improved enough to not need surgery, it is time to finish up so you do not need to wear appliances any longer. This can be accomplished either by orthodontics or prosthodontics. The purpose is to support your jaw joints and the discs in the correct anatomical position. It is important that you understand the mechanism of how this works so choose your provider carefully and do your research! Your smile is worth it.

Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes.

Believe it or not, tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. In fact, more than 35 million people in America are missing all of their upper and/or lower teeth. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people are opting for what is called “all-onfour” dental implant restoration.

All-On-Four: One Full Arch Of Teeth, Four Dental Implants

To fully understand this remark-

A Reason To Smile Again

All-On-Four Dental Implants

able technique for replacing teeth, you should first understand what a dental implant is. An implant is a small titanium screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth.

Here’s where it gets really interesting: You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, long-lasting foundation for your new teeth.

Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place,

this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure – and better oral health. But perhaps the biggest surprise about the all-on-four is how quickly it can transform your life.

What’s The All-On-Four Dental Implant Procedure Like?

It can be scary to get implants for the first time. Most of that fear is probably due to the uncertainty, so here is the step-by-step process for getting an All-On-Four dental implant.

First, your dentist will want to make sure your comfortable, so either local or general anesthesia will be administered.

Second, the dentist or surgeon will prepare your mouth for the implants, which involves removing your remaining teeth that are failing. They will then remove any diseased or infected tissue from your jaw and gums.

After the implants have been placed, they will thoroughly clean the surgical sites and suturing all the incisions. Then you’ll be taken to a recovery room where you can relax and take time to wake up from the anesthesia.

How

Do

You Know

If The All-On-Four Procedure Is The Right Option For You?

At your All-On-Four consultation, you’ll receive a 3D CT Scan. This scan will help determine if you need implants and assist your doctors in creating your treatment plan. So if you want to learn more about dental implants, simply schedule a consultation with an All-On-Four provider. It’s the best way to find out how dental implants can change your life.

Next, they will begin the implantation process. This means they will insert the titanium screws into your jawbone. Most likely, they will place two implants toward the front of your mouth and two towards the back of your mouth so the “anchors” can evenly bare the force of the denture.

Health experts recommend that older adults incorporate strength training into their fitness routine. The addition of even a light set of weights

can enhance bone density, decrease insulin resistance, affect metabolism and result in better sleep, according to the American Council on Sports Medicine.

Regular exercise not only slows the loss of muscle mass and strengthens bones, but it could also help speed up recovery from surgery, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

Even 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as a brisk walk, provides health benefits for older adults, according to the orthopedic association.

Fortunately for today’s “baby boomers and beyond,” there are programs available that can reduce fitness center costs to leave no room for excuses for being physically fit.

We believe total well-being starts with balance—of body, mind, and spirit.

Our mission is to empower women, veterans, and families through movement, mindfulness, and nutrition. Join our workshops and wellness programs featuring: Mindful Movement & Breathwork – Therapeutic Horticulture Yoga for Trauma & Stress Relief – Nutrition and Wellness Coaching Whether you’re healing from life’s challenges or simply ready to grow stronger inside and out—there’s a place for you here.

One such program is SilverSneakers Fitness through Healthways, which partners with several local health facilities. SilverSneakers is provided at no cost by more than 70 health plans nationwide. Through SilverSneakers members are able to find classes designed for all abilities.

Check the silversneakers.com website to find participating fitness facilities near you.

Fitness coaches are trained to assess your particular body to take into account that with age there may also be some diminished endurance, strength, flexibility and balance. During your first session you and your fitness coach should discuss any injuries, joint weakness and other limitations.

Body balance classes (which incorporate elements of flexibility, coordination, balance and core engagement) and body basic classes (low-intensity agility drills) are recommended for all age groups. These programs offer many positives, such as feeling better, getting stronger, and losing weight, which are beneficial at any age.

Healthy Living

Too many of us are misinformed about the impact a lack of exercise or physical activity can have on our bodies. Lack of exercise, poor nutrition, frequent use of tobacco, and alcohol consumption are just some of the primary causes of “chronic disease.”

Look for a fitness facility that offers regular consultations with members to educate you with healthy living tips, such as ways to prepare meals that are simple and easy, and not expensive. Learning how to make the right choices for a healthy mind can only lead to a healthy body.

Additionally, fitness facilities that routinely offer new classes on a regular basis will add a variety to your routine workout and help to eliminate reaching a plateau.

If you are an older adult and not currently participating in a fitness program, don’t put it off any longer. Your health depends on it.

Chinese Medicine For Infertility

Acupuncture, an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) with a rich history spanning over 2,500 years, has emerged as a therapeutic practice renowned for its diverse benefits. This ancient technique involves delicately inserting fine needles into specific points on the body to facilitate energy flow and foster healing. Recognized for its efficacy in pain relief, stress reduction, and overall health enhancement, acupuncture has garnered increasing attention as a complementary remedy for infertility.

Globally affecting millions, infertility poses a significant challenge, with estimates suggesting that 10-15%

of couples in China encounter fertility issues. Within the realm of TCM, Chinese acupuncture for infertility adopts a holistic approach, striving to harmonize the body’s energy and reinstate reproductive health. Rooted in TCM principles, infertility is perceived as a disruption in the natural flow of energy within the body.

The acupuncture process for infertility entails the precise insertion of fine needles into designated points, believed to regulate energy and blood flow to the reproductive organs. Typically lasting up to 30 minutes, this session may elicit sensations like tingling or warmth in the patient.

Research indicates that acupuncture can positively impact fertility by balancing hormone levels, enhancing blood circulation to the uterus and ovaries, and mitigating stress—an acknowledged impediment to fertility. Particularly beneficial for women undergoing fertility treatments, acupuncture has demonstrated stress-reduction capabilities.

Moreover, acupuncture seamlessly integrates with conventional fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Studies have indi-

Allergic rhinitis or hay fever may be due to outdoor allergens, such as tree pollens, grasses and weeds and is a common problem in infants and children. Allergic rhinitis symptoms usually occur during certain times of the year for children. Other children may have perennial allergies, with problems occurring year round from exposure to indoor allergens, such as dust mites, pets, second hand smoke and molds.

Having uncontrolled allergies can put your child at risk for getting a secondary sinus infection, ear infections, make asthma symptoms worse and for having poor concentration at school.

As you know, it’s nearly impossible to live without cell phones today. They wake us up in the morning, remind us of our appointments, and alert us when to take medication throughout the day, all while keeping us connected to the world. However, because they are so compelling, they also create a real concern.

Smartphones and social media trigger the brain in ways that resemble addictive behavior.

Cell phones stimulate brain chemistry in ways similar to addictive substances. A neurotransmitter called dopamine is released in the brain as a reward. Dopamine is released when we experience something pleasurable or exciting, such as eating enjoyable

Cell Phone Addiction – How Cell Phones Hook the Brain

food, winning a game, gambling, socializing, and – most notably – checking notifications on our phones.

Dopamine itself is not harmful. In fact, it is essential for motivation, learning, and pleasure. The problem arises when a behavior is repeated frequently, causing short, rapid bursts of dopamine.

Social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook are intentionally designed to keep us engaged in a constant state of stimulation. This dopamine-driven response keeps us using these platforms for as long as possible by employing psychological techniques that trigger repeated dopamine release.

Every time we refresh our screen and see something that captures our attention, dopamine is released. It’s similar to the feeling experienced with gambling or other repetitive habits.

Likes and comments act as small bursts of dopamine that signal approval. This creates a sense that someone is paying attention to you, which feels

rewarding. Scrolling also releases this same chemical. When we spend hours on an app, the pleasure reinforces the behavior through continued dopamine release.

Researchers suggest that smartphone use can create a cycle driven by dopamine. When you feel bored or stressed, you check your phone. Each time you do, dopamine is released, rewarding the brain and encouraging the behavior. Over time, the brain begins to associate the device with relief and pleasure, making the habit increasingly automatic.

The problem occurs when you feel anxious without your phone, constantly check notifications, and lose track of time while scrolling. This can lead to difficulty focusing and reduced sleep due to late-night phone use.

Excessive phone and social media use have been linked to several mental health concerns, including increased anxiety, stress, tension, sleep disruption, and feelings of loneliness and emptiness.

Cell phones can also be helpful. When used intentionally, these platforms can support learning, connection, and community.

However, you can reclaim control over your mobile device use by turning off non-essential notifications, setting daily screen-time limits, avoiding phone use before bed, scheduling phone-free periods during the day, and spending more time on offline activities such as exercise, meditation, and meaningful conversations.

Practices like yoga, meditation, and mindful breathing – often found in traditions like Yoga and Ayurveda – can help calm the nervous system and reduce the constant urge for digital stimulation.

Phones are not our enemy; they are powerful tools. However, when technology is designed to capture attention and repeatedly trigger the brain’s reward system, it can lead to unhealthy habits. “Where’s my phone? Oh, it’s in my hand.”

Understanding Hyperpigmentation

External and Internal Causes, Plus Proven Solutions

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern where patches of skin become darker than surrounding areas due to excess melanin production. Melanin, produced by cells called melanocytes, protects skin from damage but can overproduce in response to various triggers. This results in dark spots like sun damage, melasma, or postinflammatory marks. It affects all skin tones but is often more noticeable and persistent in medium to darker complexions.

Two categories address some of the possible causes: external (environmental exposures) and internal (systemic or bodily factors). Many involve oxidative stress, cellular “rust” from free radicals that amplifies melanin production.

External Causes:

Environmental Triggers

Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation from Sunlight: UV rays (especially UVA) remain the primary driver of hyperpigmentation. They stimulate melanocytes to produce more melanin as a defense mechanism, leading to solar lentigines (age spots) on sun-exposed areas like the face, hands, and chest. Cumulative exposure over years explains why spots often worsen with age.

High Energy Visible Light (HEV), also known as blue-violet light, is everywhere around us from screens and LEDs. Light from phones, computers, and indoor lighting all induces oxidative stress and directly activates melanogenesis pathways. Studies confirm

constant exposure contributes to hyperpigmentation, particularly in skin of color, by generating reactive oxygen species that boost melanin. This “digital aging” effect adds to UV damage in our screenheavy lives.

Pollution, irritants, and chemicals in face and hair products, laundry detergent, harsh ingredients in creams, lotions, or unregulated lightening products all cause inflammation, triggering post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Unregulated bleaching creams often contain mercury or high-potency steroids, risking permanent discoloration, ochronosis, or systemic toxicity (e.g., kidney effects). Evidence warns against non-prescription “fast-whitening” products; stick to regulated, dermatologist-recommended options.

These external factors are largely controllable through protection and mindful product choices.

Internal Causes:

The Body’s Silent Contributors

Not all pigmentation stems from the environment; internal signals play an equally powerful role. Hormonal fluctuations top the list, most famously in melasma (chloasma or “mask of pregnancy”). Estrogen and progesterone spiking during pregnancy, with oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, or even puberty stimulate melanocytes, particularly on the forehead, cheeks, and upper lip. Melasma patches are larger and more symmetrical than sun spots and notoriously resistant to treatment without addressing the hormonal root.

Genetics set the stage for vulnerability. Families prone to freckles or those with darker complexions inherit more active melanocytes. Maturational hyperpigmentation, a gradual darkening on the cheeks in middle age, often ties to genetic predisposition combined with chronic sun exposure. Medications can induce wide-

spread or patchy darkening. Oral antibiotics (especially tetracyclines), antimalarials, tricyclic antidepressants, chemotherapy agents, and even non-steroidal anti-inflammatories increase photosensitivity or directly stimulate melanin. Topical drugs can do the same, but systemic ones affect larger areas.

Underlying medical conditions add complexity. Addison’s disease (adrenal insufficiency) causes bronze-like generalized hyperpigmentation, especially in creases, scars, and mucous membranes due to elevated melanocyte-stimulating hormone. Thyroid disorders, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiencies, hemochromatosis (iron overload), diabetes-related acanthosis nigricans (velvety darkening in skin folds – back of neck, armpits), and liver and renal stress can all manifest as pigmentation changes. In rare cases, insulin resistance or metabolic issues amplify melanin production in addition to unregulated skin bleaching self-treatment that can worsen the condition.

These internal drivers underscore why treating hyperpigmentation signals a need for in-depth, broader health evaluation. Blood tests for hormones, gut microbiome, vitamins, insulin and blood glucose levels, and thyroid function are common diagnostic steps.

Treatment Options: Layered Strategies for Lasting Results

(Medical grade topicals, chemical peels, and advanced skin color appropriate laser treatments.)

No single “cure” exists, but a multi-pronged approach yields the best outcomes. Treatment timelines range from weeks (mild cases) to 6–12 months (stubborn melasma or PIH), with maintenance essential to prevent recurrence. Dermatologists tailor plans by cause, skin type, and severity, prioritizing safety in darker tones to avoid treatment-induced PIH.

Focusing on addressing the

root cause of pigmentation, followed by a targeted holistic treatment approach.

Daily photoprotection using science and evidence-based ingredients to provide sufficient UV, IR, and HEV protection. Broadspectrum physical sunblock zinc/ titanium dioxide or iron oxides for the protection of both UV and HEV (blue light blocking) every day, reapplied every 2–3 hours.

This can be achieved by selecting products that have medical strength ingredients that incorporate powerful antioxidants that combat oxidative stress from triggers, protect, restore, and repair the damage.

Products such as FANA bnatural Supreme Glow antioxidant serum contains vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid, peptides to combat free radicals within the skin and brighten dark spots. FANA bnatural Triple Filler Boost serum contains advanced ingredients like niacinamide (Vitamin B3, 5%), hyaluronic acid, and copper to reduce inflammation, strengthen barrier, and inhibit melanin transfer.

Tranexamic Acid (Topical 2–5%, or oral under supervision): Blocks plasmin/plasminogen pathways to curb melanin production. Demonstrates strong melasma/PIH reduction, often outperforming older agents with minimal irritation.

FANA bnatural Deep clarifying cleanser contains low-dose hydroxy acids to exfoliate and accelerate skin turnover. FANA bnatural Advance Brightening Luminous C cream with tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THDA), a stable, oil-soluble form of vitamin C, works deep within the skin’s layers to brighten the skin and fight oxidative damage.

FANA bnatural Vitamin A acts as an antioxidant, helps speed up the skin cell regeneration cycle, encourages the skin to shed old, dead skin cells and replace them with fresh, healthy new skin, improving the appearance of dark spots.

never bitten. This isn’t just a coincidence; our research has led us to conclude that weakened immunity is the primary driver behind why certain individuals become “mite magnets.”

Through detailed analysis and ongoing tracking of hundreds of cases, I have identified a consistent pattern: in almost 90% of situations, individuals who report mite bites tend to have a weaker immune system than other household members who remain completely unaffected.

Common Factors Behind Weakened Immunity: Why Some People Become “Mite Magnets”

Immune suppression is often caused by chronic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, diabetes and blood sugar issues, cancer and chemotherapy, Lyme disease, drug or alcohol addiction, recent heart attacks, and recent surgeries. Poor diet and environmental toxins worsen these issues, destabilizing metabolic function and further weakening defenses.

roids. Prescription allergy medications include the newer, non-sedating antihistamines and topical steroids.

To be effective, your child should be using these medications every day. They will not work as well if just used on an as needed basis.

If your child does not improve with these interventions, then their doctor will consider having your child see an allergy specialist for skin testing to figure out what your child is allergic to and to possibly start immunotherapy injections (allergy shots).

Safe Usage Of Insect Repellents

Many safe and effective insect repellents are available that you can use to protect your child, including those that use DEET, citronella, or soybean oil. Remember to only

Removing the source doesn’t eliminate the problem; mites hide deep in furniture and persist, often targeting one person.

Conventional exterminators use chemicals, but mites can develop resistance and hide in cracks and furniture. Enzyme-based solutions like Eradizyme dissolve the protective waxy shell of mites, breaking them down mechanically and preventing resistance. Daily, consistent spraying is crucial to break the life cycle and stop reinfestation.

Empathy and Support: You’re Not Alone

If you have been misdiagnosed or dismissed, know that differences in immune systems and skin chemistry are real and powerful. The hardest part of being a “mite magnet” is feeling ignored. You deserve validation and practical solutions.

The Value Of Coaching: Daily Guidance and Proven Tools

Having a coach means ongoing support, guidance, and the correct product to help break the cycle. use products that are approved for children, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and wash off the insect repellents when you return indoors.

Insect repellents with DEET are probably the best and most commonly used. DEET is absorbed through your child’s skin, and it is generally safe as long as the product has less than 10% DEET. So you may consider limiting how much you put on younger children, wash it off as soon as possible, and apply it more to clothing than skin.

DEET insect repellents are effective for several hours, they do wash off with water and sweat, and you should reapply them to be most effective but always follow the product’s instructions to be safe.

Is hand pain limiting your enjoyment of life? Are dexterity challenges interfering with everyday tasks or hobbies you once loved? Many seniors find themselves giving up activities like writing, crocheting, or playing music because of discomfort. Often, the issue stems from the design of everyday tools. Most utensils, pens, and craft tools have narrow handles that force the thumb and fingers into a tight pinch, placing strain on joints. Over time, this repeated stress can contribute to osteoarthritis, chronic pain, and reduced hand function.

At GripZ, LLC, we understand how disruptive hand pain can be. That’s why Sher-Hold devices were created – to help seniors and others maintain independence, confidence, and the ability to enjoy daily life. These ergonomically designed grips slide easily over common household tools, transforming them into more comfortable, easy-to-use items without requiring costly replacements.

Hand comfort is more important than many people realize. Osteoarthritis affects nearly one in three adults over age 65 and is more common in women. It involves inflammation and cartilage breakdown, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Hand osteoarthritis, especially at the base of the thumb, can make simple tasks difficult. Beyond physical discomfort, chronic hand pain is also linked to poor sleep, fatigue, and reduced social engagement, all of which impact overall quality of life.

Sher-Hold devices offer a simple, affordable, non-drug solution. Their ergonomic design fits naturally in the palm, encouraging a relaxed “C” shape rather than a tight pinch. This helps reduce strain on thumb joints and ligaments while still allowing precise movements. Unlike braces, these grips support function without limiting motion.

Users often experience improved control and a reduced risk of dropping items, along with less pain during daily activities. Because Sher-Hold devices don’t dictate finger placement, they adapt comfortably to different

hand shapes and conditions, including arthritis, tremors, or prior injuries.

Another key benefit is versatility. Sher-Hold devices fit over utensils, pens, paintbrushes, crochet hooks, and even sports or musical equipment. They are lightweight, portable, and easy to clean, making them convenient for use at home or on the go.

Incorporating them into daily routines is simple. Use one while eating for a steadier grip, attach it to a pen for easier writing, or add it to creative tools to return to hobbies comfortably. Even activities like playing music or golf can become more enjoyable again.

Maintaining independence

doesn’t always require major changes. Sometimes, a small solution can make a big difference. Sher-Hold devices help seniors stay active, engaged, and confident by improving hand comfort and function. For those experiencing hand pain, this small investment can support a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle.

Considering Neck Lift Surgery?

Reduce Signs of Aging and Treat Sagging Skin!

A neck lift can be performed for men and women of varying ages who are often frustrated by changes of the appearance of their neck and jawline. Depending on your age, a neck lift can be a short one-hour procedure to remove fat or a 3-hour procedure to remove fat, visible neck bands, and excess skin.

Neck Lift Surgery Can:

Remove Excess Skin (Cervicoplasty) • Liposuction to Remove Excess Fat

Remove or Alter Neck Muscles (Platysmaplasty)

Liposuction can be performed alone or with surgical removal of the fat under the chin through a small incision under the chin.

In patients with vertical bands in the neck, a platysmaplasty can be performed to reduce the appearance of the bands.

Sometimes a chin implant is recommended to improve the overall contour and help with excess skin.

Why Lifelong Learning Supports Healthy Aging

Healthy aging is often associated with physical activity, good nutrition, and regular medical care. While these habits are essential, research shows that continued learning is another powerful tool for staying healthy as we age. Lifelong learning helps keep the brain active, supports emotional well-being, and gives older adults a sense of purpose and connection.

The brain works much like

a muscle: the more it is used, the stronger it remains. Learning new skills, exploring unfamiliar topics, and challenging the mind can help strengthen memory, attention, and problem-solving abilities. Studies have found that older adults who stay mentally engaged are more likely to maintain cognitive function and may reduce their risk of age-related decline.

One of the easiest ways to continue learning today is through online courses. Digital platforms

make it possible to take classes from home on nearly any subject— from history, finance, and photography to computer skills, wellness, and languages. Many universities and organizations offer affordable or even free courses designed for adults who want to keep learning without the pressure of grades or deadlines.

Online learning offers several benefits beyond intellectual stimulation. It provides structure and routine, which are especially important after retirement or other major life changes. Setting aside time each week for a class or project can create a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

Learning also helps older adults stay connected to the modern world. Technology changes quickly, and understanding new tools can make everyday life easier and more enjoyable. Taking an online class in computer skills, social media, or smartphone use can increase confidence and independence. It can also help older adults stay connected with family, friends, and commu-

nity resources.

Many online courses include discussion boards, virtual classrooms, or group projects. These features create opportunities for social interaction, which is another key factor in healthy aging. Maintaining connections with others supports emotional health and reduces feelings of isolation.

The benefits of lifelong learning are not limited to career advancement. For many older adults, learning is a way to pursue longheld interests, discover new passions, and continue growing. Whether someone enrolls in an online course, joins a local workshop, or simply reads about a new topic, the act of learning sends an important message: growth does not stop with age.

Healthy aging is not only about adding years to life—it is about adding life to those years. Lifelong learning helps make that possible by keeping the mind active, the spirit engaged, and the future full of possibilities.
