Meditate Or Medicate?
By Toni Greene, Owner Happy Hour Yoga
Meditation can help prevent the need for medication for certain physical and mental issues. To meditate, we must upgrade our thinking and understand what drives our actions. Your body, like a vehicle, can be upgraded through self-awareness and meditation. How Does One Upgrade Oneself? By knowing oneself. Meditation
fosters self-awareness. The body is your vehicle, and the mind is a crucial part of it. Thoughts influence emotions, which in turn affect the body, especially the organs. To upgrade the mind is to upgrade the body, as they control your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Anxiety and depression often stem from our imaginations. Our thoughts dictate our emotions, causing reactions to present situations. Through meditation, we can control our thinking and imagination, allow-

ing us to respond more calmly to the present moment. Situations are interpreted by our mind, affecting our emotions, actions, and reactions. Ask yourself: “What am I thinking?” and “Why am I thinking this?” Our imagination often drives our emotions, leading to anxiety and depression. While we can’t change the past, we can shape our future by living in the present. The Bhagavad Gita states, “When we think about yesterday, it brings tears. When we think about the future, it brings fears. When you live in the present moment, it brings awareness, happiness, and cheer.” Focus on the now. What are you feeling and thinking at this moment? What emotions are tied to your awareness? Which organ is being affected? Emotions result from your thoughts. So, should you meditate or medicate? Meditation can reduce the need for medication. While medication benefits many, spending 10 to 20 minutes meditating daily, morning and night, enhances awareness and control over thoughts, feelings, and emotions. Meditation helps manage medication reliance. Both meditation and

medication impact the body, mind, and soul. Meditation calms the mind, increases security within oneself, and raises awareness of words, actions, and deeds. It can mitigate or better control the need for medication. Engage in meditation practices like prayer, listening to uplifting music, or focusing on your breath. The quality of your breathing influences your thoughts and reactions. The beauty of thoughts is their flexibility; you can change them with focused breathing, controlling your thoughts, feelings, and emotions in the past, present, and future. Meditation grounds you in the here and now, bringing awareness to your words, actions, and thoughts. Please see “Meditate,” page 31
The Hidden Threat In the Nursery How Environmental Pests Exploit Young Mothers and Pediatric Health Submitted By Head Researcher Eradizyme.com
Bridging Biophysics with Young Mothers’ Wellness: The Hidden Science of Pest Attraction and the Power of Non-Toxic Environmental Protection Sarah sat in the dim light of her nursery at 3:00 AM, cradling her newborn baby while fighting back tears of absolute exhaustion. For the third consecutive night, she noticed tiny, red, intensely itchy bumps appearing on her arms and across her baby’s delicate legs. Her husband slept soundly in the next room, completely untouched by the invisible culprit. When Sarah mentioned the bites to her pediatrician, she was told it was likely just postpartum anxiety
or a standard heat rash. This dismissive response left her feeling deeply isolated, confused, and doubting her own reality. Yet, Sarah was not imagining things, and she was certainly not alone. Countless numbers of families experience this ordeal. This extensive, real-world data reveals a widespread, hidden problem: pepper flake size ectoparasites, which are tiny organisms that live on the outside of their host’s body rather than inPlease see “Environmental Pests,” page 31

Women, Osteoporosis, and Periodontal Health
The Connection Between Bone Loss and Your Smile By Marc P. Stanard, DDS, PC
Osteoporosis is commonly associated with weakened bones and an increased risk of fractures, particularly in women as they age. However, the effects of bone loss are not limited to the hips, spine, and wrists. Changes in bone density may also have important implications for the jawbone and the structures that support the teeth. Osteoporosis occurs when the body loses bone mass faster than it can replace it. Women are at particularly high risk after menopause, when declining estrogen levels can accelerate bone loss. Because the teeth depend on the surrounding alveolar bone for support, researchers have examined the
relationship between osteoporosis and periodontal health. Two Different Conditions With an Important Connection Osteoporosis and periodontal disease are distinct conditions. Osteoporosis affects bone density throughout the skeleton, while periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that destroys the gums, periodontal ligament, and bone surrounding the teeth. However, reduced bone density may make the supporting structures of the teeth more vulnerable to the destructive effects of periodontal inflammation. Women with both osteoporosis and periodontal disease may therefore face an increased risk of alveolar bone loss and eventual tooth loss. Periodontal Evaluation Matters Periodontal disease can prog-
ress without significant pain, making regular evaluation especially important. Warning signs may include bleeding or swollen gums, gum recession, persistent bad breath, loose teeth, or changes in the way the teeth fit together. A periodontal examination can evaluate gum health, measure periodontal pocket depths, and assess the bone supporting the teeth. Dental imaging may also reveal changes in bone levels that require further attention. Women being treated for osteoporosis should always inform their dentist or periodontist about the medications they are taking. Certain antiresorptive medications can affect bone remodeling and may require special consideration when planning procedures such as tooth extractions, bone grafting, or dental implant surgery. This does
not mean that necessary dental treatment cannot be performed, but careful evaluation and coordination with the patient’s medical provider may be appropriate. Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is an important part of healthy aging. Daily oral hygiene, regular dental and periodontal examinations, smoking cessation, good nutrition, and proper management of osteoporosis and other systemic conditions can all contribute to long-term oral health. For women at risk of osteoporosis, protecting the smile means paying attention not only to the teeth, but also to the bone and periodontal tissues that support them. Early detection and coordinated medical and dental care can help preserve oral health and function throughout life.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why. People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable. Causes Of Pinky Toe Pain
By Lubrina Bryant, DPM District Podiatry, PLLC Experiencing pain in the pinky toe can be discomforting, yet understanding the causes behind it can offer clarity and relief. One common culprit is wearing ill-fitting footwear, particularly shoes that are too narrow or have inadequate toe space, which can compress the pinky toe and lead to friction and discomfort. Additionally, repetitive activities such as running or walking long distances can strain the muscles and joints in the pinky toe, resulting in pain and inflammation. Injuries such as stubbing the toe or dropping a heavy object on it can also cause acute pain and swelling. Moreover, conditions like bunions or hammertoes can affect the alignment of the toes, putting extra pressure on the pinky toe and causing pain over time. Understanding the diverse causes of pinky toe pain empowers individuals to take proactive measures, such as wearing properly fitting shoes, and practicing good foot hygiene. If your pinky toe hurts, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can determine what the cause is, and offer appropriate treatment options. Toe pain can disrupt your daily activities. If you have any concerns, contact Dr. Lubrina Bryant of District Podiatry, PLLC. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet. What Causes Toe Pain? • Gout • Corns and calluses • Hammertoe • Bunions • Blisters • Ingrown toenails • Sprains • Fractures (broken bones) • Dislocations When To See a Podiatrist • Severe pain • Persistent pain that lasts more than a week
• Signs of infection • Continued swelling • Pain that prevents walking • Diagnosis In many cases the cause of toe pain is obvious, but in others, a podiatrist may want to use more advanced methods to determine the problem. These can range from simple visual inspections and sensation tests to Xrays and MRI scans. Women’s Urologic Health
Understanding, Prevention, and Care By Mara Holton, MD Anne Arundel Urology Urologic health is a vital component of overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked—especially when it comes to women. Women’s urologic health involves the care and maintenance of the urinary tract and reproductive organs, and addressing the unique challenges that women face in this area is essential
for long-term health and quality of life. Common Urologic Conditions In Women 1. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): UTIs are among the most common urologic issues affecting women. Due to the shorter length of the female urethra, bacteria can more easily reach the bladder, leading to infections. Symptoms include a burning sensation during urination, frequent urges to urinate, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine. Prompt treatment with antibiotics and good hygiene practices can help prevent recurrent infections. 2. Overactive Bladder (OAB):
OAB is characterized by a sudden and frequent need to urinate, sometimes accompanied by leakage. It can be caused by factors like weakened pelvic muscles, nerve damage, or hormonal changes. Treatment options include lifestyle modifications, pelvic floor exercises, medications, and in some cases, surgical interventions. 3. U r i n a r y I n c o n t i n e n c e : Incontinence, or the involuntary loss of urine, affects women of all ages but becomes more common after childbirth and menopause. Stress incontinence (leakage during physical activity) and urge incontinence (a sudden,

intense need to urinate) are the most common types. Treatments range from physical therapy and bladder training to medications and surgical procedures. 4. Interstitial Cystitis (IC): Also known as painful bladder syndrome, IC is a chronic condition causing bladder pressure, pain, and frequent urination. Though its exact cause is unclear, treatments focus on symptom relief through dietary changes, physical therapy, medications, and bladder instillations. 5. Pelvic Organ Prolapse: This condition occurs when the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic organs weaken, causing organs like the bladder, uterus, or rectum to drop into the vaginal canal. Symptoms include pressure, discomfort, and difficulty with urination or bowel movements. Treatment may include pelvic floor exercises, pessaries, or surgery. Prevention and Care Maintaining urologic health involves a combination of lifestyle choices, preventive care, and regular medical check-ups. Here are some key strategies: • Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract and supports overall kidney function. • Practice Good Hygiene: Wiping from front to back, wearing breathable cotton underwear, and avoiding harsh soaps can reduce the risk of infections. • Strengthen Pelvic Floor Muscles: Kegel exercises can help prevent incontinence and support bladder control. • Maintain a Healthy Diet: Limiting bladder irritants like caffeine, spicy foods, and acidic beverages can help manage symptoms of overactive bladder and IC. • Regular Medical Check-Ups: Annual visits to a gynecologist or urologist can help catch potential issues early and ensure comprehensive care. When To See a Urologist Women should consult a urologist if they experience recurring UTIs, incontinence, pelvic pain, or any other persistent urinary symptoms. Early diagnosis and intervention can prevent complications and improve quality of life. Women’s urologic health is an essential but often under-discussed aspect of medical care. By understanding common conditions, taking preventive measures, and seeking timely medical advice, women can maintain better urinary health and overall well-being. 301-805-6805
A Reason To Smile Again All-On-Four Dental Implants
Submitted By Sivakumar Sreenivasan, DMD, MDS Dental Implant Center of Rockville
Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes. Believe it or not, tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. In fact, more than 35 million people in America are missing all of their upper and/or lower teeth. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people are opting for what is called “all-onfour” dental implant restoration. All-On-Four: One Full Arch Of Teeth, Four Dental Implants To fully understand this remark-
able technique for replacing teeth, you should first understand what a dental implant is. An implant is a small titanium screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth. Here’s where it gets really interesting: You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, long-lasting foundation for your new teeth. Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place,
this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure – and better oral health. But perhaps the biggest surprise about the all-on-four is how quickly it can transform your life. What’s The All-On-Four Dental Implant Procedure Like? It can be scary to get implants for the first time. Most of that fear is probably due to the uncertainty, so here is the step-by-step process for getting an All-On-Four dental implant. First, your dentist will want to make sure your comfortable, so either local or general anesthesia will be administered. Second, the dentist or surgeon will prepare your mouth for the implants, which involves removing your remaining teeth that are failing. They will then remove any diseased or infected tissue from your jaw and gums. Next, they will begin the implantation process. This means they will
insert the titanium screws into your jawbone. Most likely, they will place two implants toward the front of your mouth and two towards the back of your mouth so the “anchors” can evenly bare the force of the denture. After the implants have been placed, they will thoroughly clean the surgical sites and suturing all the incisions. Then you’ll be taken to a recovery room where you can relax and take time to wake up from the anesthesia. How Do You Know If The All-On-Four Procedure Is The Right Option For You? At your All-On-Four consultation, you’ll receive a 3D CT Scan. This scan will help determine if you need implants and assist your doctors in creating your treatment plan. So if you want to learn more about dental implants, simply schedule a consultation with an All-On-Four provider. It’s the best way to find out how dental implants can change your life.

What Is Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)?
By Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS Sleep & TMJ Therapy
So, what does it mean when a person says “I have TMJ”? Well, technically, it means that you have a temporomandibular joint. And technically, that’s all it means – you have a jaw joint. In reality, most people are actually saying “I have TMD”– which
more literally means they have TMJ disorder. TMD refers to the displacement or actual slipping of the articular disc off of the condyle. In English, this means that the little cushioning disc on top of your jawbone has slipped off the bone and is now rubbing around in that little socket just in front of your
ear. That slipped disc can and will pinch nerves and blood vessels and this can wreak havoc with your entire body. The symptoms of TMD include head and neck pain, migraines, jaw clicking/popping/pain, facial tics or tremors, and various other body issues. There are many patients over the years who have presented with body

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!” - D. Thomas “My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.” - Susan

Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS tics (and this is sometimes a Tourette’s situation) and the appliances used can help mitigate their symptoms. There was actually a study done in Osaka at the university that confirmed symptoms of Tourette’s were actually reduced greatly by wearing a TMD appliance! The understanding is that the nerve in the jaw joint- most likely the auriculotemporal nerve- is being pinched and this can cause the tics of Tourette’s. By decompressing the TMJ joint disc, this can alleviate those tics and Osaka University has confirmed the efficacy of the dental appliance used for Tourette’s. The bottom line here is that when the little disc is slipped off the condyle bone in the jaw socket, it can really hurt the body badly. Our office has become quite efficient at identifying the damaged disc through the use of a detailed MRI that looks directly at the discs and the radiologist we use is able to produce a very detailed report that can be used to diagnose the problem. From there, a treatment plan that includes wearing various devices can be developed. You do not need to wear the device(s) forever. The good news is that after a year of treating the damaged joints, usually the patient feels so much better and we can then use orthodontic techniques to raise the teeth up to the right height to support the TM joints. It is quite a process and took years to develop, but nowadays we can use clear aligners in almost all cases and this makes the work so much easier for everyone. It is rare, but sometimes we need to have surgery done for the discs when they are beyond repair. Years ago, this was a difficult procedure, but today it has become much easier for both the patient and the doctor. We even have a technique called ‘arthrocentesis’ in which the joints are flushed out and cleaned to remove debris and bony pieces that can cause pain. This procedure has shown good promise. There are other techniques in treating TMD and those can be reviewed in the next article. 301-805-6805

When Cognitive Change Begins, Care Shouldn’t Be an Either-Or Choice Submitted By Inspīr Embassy Row
As the U.S. population ages, the national conversation about senior care has grown louder but not clearer. Too often, cognitive aging is framed as a binary choice: older adults either live independently or need full memory care. In reality, millions of seniors fall into a broad, underrecognized space between the two. An estimated 12 million Americans are experiencing mild cognitive impairment or early memory changes according to data from the Alzheimer’s Association. These individuals may not need the intensive structure of memory care, but they often struggle in traditional assisted living settings that are not designed for cognitive vulnerability. The result is a systemic mismatch, one that leaves families navigating uncertainty and seniors without the support that could help them thrive. At Inspīr Embassy Row in Washington, D.C., that gap is not an after-
thought. It is intentionally addressed through Aura, one of three care programs offered within the community. Rather than treating early cognitive decline as a problem to be deferred until it worsens, Aura recognizes it as a distinct phase of aging that requires its own approach. Aura is designed for residents with early memory impairment who benefit from more structure, supervision, and engagement than assisted living typically provides, but who do not yet need full memory care. Residents receive enhanced staffing, curated programming, and individualized care plans informed by comprehensive assessments that consider cognition, behavior, and daily functioning. The goal is not to limit independence, but to preserve it while reducing the isolation and anxiety that often accompany cognitive change. What sets this approach apart is its emphasis on personalization and continuity. Cognitive decline rarely follows a straight line, and Aura’s model reflects that reality. Staff members are
trained to monitor changes over time, documenting shifts in behavior, communication, or personal care that may indicate a need for additional support. When a transition to memory care becomes necessary, it happens within the same community, minimizing disruption and preserving familiarity, an often overlooked but critical factor in cognitive health. This kind of middle-tier support remains rare in senior living, despite growing demand. Many families may feel like they must choose between “not enough” and “too much,” leaving residents either under-supported or prematurely placed in higher levels of care. That approach is not only emotionally taxing, but also inefficient, costly, and increasingly out of step with what we know about aging and brain health. As policymakers, providers, and families confront the realities of an aging population, the need for more nuanced approaches to cognitive care is becoming harder to ignore. Models that acknowledge early cog-

nitive change, and respond with the right level of structure, engagement, and dignity, offer an important path forward. For families navigating this oftenuncertain stage, understanding what intermediate support can look like is a critical first step. Learning more about programs designed for the “inbetween” can help individuals make informed decisions earlier, before a crisis forces them into choices that may not fit. Communities such as Inspīr Embassy Row illustrate how this level of care can be thoughtfully integrated into senior living, and why paying attention to it now matters.

Choosing Summer Shoes Without Sacrificing Foot Health By Mikel Daniels, DPM, MBA We Treat Feet Podiatry and ankles! Part 2 Summer often bring a shift toward sandals, slides, flip-flops, wedges, and lighter footwear. While warm-weather shoes may feel convenient and fashionable, many provide very little support for the feet. Over time, unsupportive footwear can contribute to pain, instability, and longterm structural problems. High heels remain one of the most common causes of foot discomfort. Elevated heels shift body weight forward onto the ball of the foot while narrow toe boxes crowd the toes together. Repeated use may contribute to bunions, hammertoes, nerve irritation, and chronic forefoot pain. Even occasional wear during weddings, parties, or long workdays can leave the feet sore and fatigued.
Over time, unsupportive footwear can contribute to pain, instability, and long-term structural problems. This does not mean dress shoes or heels must be avoided completely. Limiting the amount of time spent in them and alternating with more supportive shoes can help reduce strain. Gel cushions placed under the ball of the foot may also help redistribute pressure during occasional wear. Flip-flops and flimsy sandals create a different type of problem. Many provide little arch support and force the toes to grip constantly just to keep the shoe in place. Over time, this extra muscle effort can contribute to arch pain, tendon irritation, fatigue, and instability. A supportive sandal should offer more than just cushioning. Look for styles with a structured sole, moderate arch support, and preferably a back strap for stability. If a sandal folds completely in half or feels unstable while walking, it is likely not providing enough support for daily use. www.yourhealthmagazine.net
Sneakers remain one of the healthiest options for prolonged standing and walking, but not all sneakers are equally supportive. A well-designed sneaker should resist collapsing when twisted and should remain stable through the arch and heel. The back portion of the shoe, known as the heel counter, should feel firm rather than soft or flimsy. One common misconception is that softer always means better. Extremely soft shoes may actually allow excessive movement and fail
to properly support the foot. Proper footwear should provide stability while still allowing the foot to move naturally. Summer activities can place additional stress on the feet, especially during vacations, outdoor events, amusement parks, and long days of walking. Wearing unsupportive shoes for extended periods often leads to heel pain, arch strain, blisters, and swelling. The best approach is balance. Fashionable footwear can still be
enjoyed occasionally, but supportive shoes should make up the majority of daily wear. Paying attention to fit, support, and structure can significantly reduce foot stress while improving comfort and stability. Healthy footwear choices affect far more than the feet alone. Proper support can improve posture, reduce joint strain, enhance balance, and help maintain an active lifestyle. Small adjustments in shoe selection today may help prevent pain and mobility problems later in life.

Unlocking the Jaw
How MRI Helps Diagnose TMJ Disorders
By Michael Rogers, DDS Fairlington Dental
Jaw pain, clicking, or difficulty opening and closing the mouth can be signs of a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. These issues affect the hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull and can lead to chronic discomfort if left untreated. Because the joint involves both bone and soft tissue, getting an accurate diagnosis is essential. This is where MRI technology plays an important role.
Understanding TMJ Disorders TMJ disorders can have many underlying causes. Sometimes it stems from injury or arthritis. Other times it may be related to teeth grinding, muscle tension, or a misaligned bite. Common symptoms include jaw pain, headaches, earaches, and clicking or popping sounds when the jaw moves. In more advanced cases, it can become difficult to eat or speak comfortably. Pinpointing the source of the problem requires more than a visual exam or basic imaging. That is because many TMJ conditions involve soft tissues such as the disc that cushions the joint and the surrounding muscles and ligaments. These cannot be clearly seen with standard x-rays. How MRI Provides a Clearer View MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, offers one of the most detailed ways to evaluate soft tissues.
While x-rays and CT scans focus on the bones, MRI uses magnetic fields to create high-resolution images of muscles, discs, and connective tissue. This makes it possible to assess whether the disc inside the TMJ is in the correct position, whether there is inflammation, or if there are signs of damage or deterioration. MRI is especially valuable when diagnosing internal derangements, which occur when the disc shifts out of place. This is a common cause of jaw locking, clicking, or chronic discomfort during everyday jaw movement. Why an Accurate Diagnosis Matters When a TMJ disorder is diagnosed with MRI, treatment can be far more targeted. Rather than relying on general approaches, providers can tailor care to the specific issue at hand. This might involve a custom bite appliance, physical therapy, or minimally invasive procedures de-
signed to relieve pressure and realign the joint. MRI also helps rule out other conditions that might mimic TMJ symptoms, which is important for building the right treatment plan from the beginning. Technology-Driven Approach Dentists believe that exceptional outcomes begin with precision. For patients experiencing jaw discomfort or symptoms of TMJ dysfunction, we may recommend advanced imaging such as MRI to get a complete picture of what is happening beneath the surface. This allows us to design personalized care plans that address the root cause and support long-term comfort. If you are dealing with persistent jaw pain, headaches, or difficulty chewing, MRI can provide answers that lead to true relief. With the right tools and a thoughtful approach, we help patients move beyond symptoms and into lasting solutions.
Optimum Health Begins With Oral Health At Fairlington Dental, we understand the connection between a healthy smile and a healthy body. As a result, we look at the whole person to discover the reasons a patient may have gum disease or a bad bite. A number of studies link heart disease and other serious conditions to the presence of periodontal (gum) disease. This research makes it vital that we take a Complete Health approach to your dental care. Dr. Rogers will listen to you, conduct a careful assessment, and carefully explain your proposed customized wellness plan. He will then take the time to answer all of your questions. You become a partner in your oral health goals! Our team has mastered the techniques of gentle dentistry and is skilled at helping patients with any level of apprehension relax and grow comfortable with visiting the dentist. Anxiety and tension have a variety of sources, so it’s important for us to listen to your concerns as well as your goals and history. Then we address your anxieties and proceed with gentle treatment only when you’re ready. We deliver all of this in an office that is environmentally aware, while you enjoy a variety of spa-like amenities during your visit. One of our greatest joys is helping patients smile again, especially those who may not have seen a dentist in a while. You’ll be amazed at how the quality of life can change! We strive to create a partnership with you that starts the moment you walk through our door.

Relieving Menstrual Discomfort – A Holistic Approach By Quansheng Lu, CMD, PhD, LAc Wholelife Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture Center Dysmenorrhea, a prevalent issue among women globally, is characterized by periodic pain during, before, or after
menstrual periods. This pain is caused by abnormal uterine contractions due to an excess of harmful prostaglandins. For some women, these pains can be intense enough to disrupt daily activities for several days each month. Common symptoms of dysmenorrhea include cramping, lower abdominal pain, lower back pain, and a pulling sensation in the inner thighs. Women may

experience headaches, dizziness, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation. There are two types of dysmenorrhea: primary and secondary. Primary dysmenorrhea occurs without any physical abnormalities and typically begins within three years of the onset of menstruation. Contributing factors include allergies, poor diet, high estrogen levels, being overweight, smoking, and stress. Many experts link the uterine muscle contractions to prostaglandins, which are hormone-like substances involved in pain and inflammation. Secondary dysmenorrhea results from gynecological conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). In Chinese medicine, pain is seen as a symptom of an underlying issue, which can stem from either an excess pattern or a deficiency pattern. Excess patterns involve blockages of Qi and blood or the retention of heat, dampness, or wind. Deficiency patterns arise from insufficient Qi and blood or an imbalance in the kidney and liver. Practitioners of Chinese medicine use acupuncture and herbal medicine
to treat dysmenorrhea. Their strategies include expelling wind, dissipating cold, eliminating dampness, moving Qi, invigorating blood, nourishing the blood, clearing heat, and tonifying the kidneys. A recent review examined the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture for treating primary dysmenorrhea. The review included ten trials with data from 944 participants, with six trials focusing on acupuncture and four on acupressure. The results showed that acupuncture provided better pain relief compared to a placebo. In Chinese medicine, ginger has long been used to alleviate dysmenorrhea due to its anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic, and circulatory properties. Ginger inhibits cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes, which contribute to menstrual cramps. Another common Chinese medicine ingredient for treating dysmenorrhea is peach kernel. By integrating traditional Chinese medicine practices such as acupuncture and herbal remedies, women can find relief from dysmenorrhea and improve their well-being during menstrual cycles.

ment depends on the child, but parents can help their children manage the increased pace of life by planning ahead, being realistic in expectations, and maintaining a positive attitude. Here are just a few suggestions to help with the transition and promote a successful school experience. Before School Starts Plan to schedule doctor and dental checkups early. Discuss any concerns you have over your child’s emotional or psychological development with your pediatrician. Your child will benefit if a potential issue is identified and addressed before school starts. Review the material sent by the school as soon as it arrives. Make note of important dates, especially back-to-school nights. Keeping a calendar can help you efficiently juggle obligations, especially if you have children in more than one school. Re-establish the bedtime and mealtime routines (especially breakfast) at least one week before school starts.

Environmental Pests
side tissues to feed and survive, do not select human targets at random. Instead, pests like bird mites, rodent mites, and bed bugs exploit the natural physical changes our bodies undergo. Because of unique biological shifts, pregnant women, postpartum mothers, and young children are often the primary targets of infestations within a household. The root of this problem typically begins on the exterior of a house or an apartment building. True structural protection requires a strict awareness of nesting birds and active rodents around the immediate perimeter. When birds build nests under roof ledges, inside gutters, or on windowsills, they can carry thousands of tiny bird mites with them. Similarly, mice and rats nesting within walls, crawlspaces, attics, garages or apartment trash chutes introduce rodent mites into the building infrastructure. The critical danger arises when the young birds leave the nest or the rodents are eliminated.Once their natural animal hosts are gone, hungry mites migrate by the thousands through tiny cracks
in brickwork, window frames, electrical outlets, and ventilation systems. They easily enter nurseries in search of a new blood meal. To avoid this problem entirely, families must shift away from reactive treatment and focus on proactive environmental prevention. Homeowners should inspect external roof lines, gutters, window sills, and window air conditioning units for active or abandoned bird nests, while thoroughly checking foundation cracks for rodent entry points. Installing wildlife deterrents like bird spikes, netting, or mesh screens on vents and chimneys can stop wild animals from nesting, on or, inside the structure of your house or apartment complex. Furthermore, if pests do breach the perimeter, avoid traditional synthetic pesticides that rely on chemical neurotoxicity to kill insects, as these introduce severe health risks for developing children. Instead, opt for modern targeted enzyme formulas that break down the insect’s outer shell on contact, neutralizing the pest without using poisons.
Back To School The First Week Clear your own schedule. If possible, postpone business trips, volunteer meetings, and extra projects. Make lunches the night before school, ensuring healthy choices are made. When setting alarm clocks, leave extra time. Make sure your child has plenty of time to get up, eat breakfast, and get to school. Review your child’s schoolbooks and send a brief note to your child’s teacher. Let the teachers know that you are interested in getting regular feedback on how and what your child is doing in school. Overcoming Anxiety Let your children know you care. If your child is anxious about school, send personal notes in their lunch box or book bag, this will help to reinforce the ability to cope.
Meditate
To calm the mind with meditation, use mantras, prayers, affirmations, hymns, chanting, or spiritual singing. These techniques lead to peace, calm, and tranquility, fostering a sense of safety within yourself. Upgrade yourself to ensure your body and mind perform optimally. Also, model optimism and confidence for your child. Do not overreact to situations and remain calm and positive. Extracurricular Activities Look for activities that will give quality, not quantity. Your child will benefit most from one or two activities that are fun, reinforce social development, and teach new skills. Too much scheduled time can be stressful. Also, consider your family schedule and personal energy level. When Problems Arise Most children can display a variety of behaviors. It is generally wise not to over interpret those behaviors. If faced with an issue, more often than not time and a few intervention strategies will remedy the problem. Most children are resilient, and with your support and encouragement, can thrive throughout their school experience. From page 4

Understanding Hormones, Energy, and Performance In Women
Submitted by ScholarsHub.net Energy and performance are often discussed in terms of motivation, sleep, and productivity. For women, however, hormones can also play an important role in how the body and brain function. Hormonal changes throughout life can influence energy levels, concentration, mood, sleep, and physical performance. Hormones & Daily Function Hormones are chemical messengers that help regulate many of the body’s essential processes. Estrogen and progesterone are commonly as-
sociated with reproductive health, but their effects extend beyond the reproductive system. These hormones can influence mood, sleep, bone health, and cognitive function. Other hormones also affect performance. Thyroid hormones help regulate metabolism and energy, while cortisol is involved in the body’s response to stress. Insulin helps regulate blood sugar, which is essential for providing cells with energy. When these systems are disrupted, women may experience fatigue, difficulty concentrating, sleep problems, or changes in physical stamina.
Hormonal Changes Throughout Life Hormone levels naturally fluctuate during the menstrual cycle and change significantly during pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause. Some women notice changes in energy, focus, or mood during these transitions, while others experience few noticeable effects. During perimenopause, for example, fluctuating estrogen and progesterone levels may contribute to sleep disturbances, hot flashes, mood changes, and fatigue. These symptoms can affect daily life, including the ability to concentrate at work, study effectively, or maintain an exercise routine. When Fatigue Should Not Be Ignored Busy women often attribute exhaustion to demanding schedules, family responsibilities, or workplace stress. While lifestyle factors certainly matter, persistent fatigue should not automatically be accepted as normal. Low energy can have many possible causes, including anemia, thyroid disorders, sleep problems, nutritional deficiencies, blood sugar issues, and hormonal changes. Because
symptoms can overlap, self-diagnosis based on social media or general wellness advice may lead women in the wrong direction. Persistent or significant changes should be discussed with a healthcare professional. Supporting Energy and Performance Healthy daily habits can support the systems involved in energy regulation. Consistent sleep, balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, stress management, and adequate recovery all contribute to physical and mental performance. Tracking symptoms may also help women recognize patterns. Noting changes in sleep, menstrual cycles, mood, energy, and concentration can provide useful information when speaking with a healthcare provider. Hormones are only one part of the complex picture of women’s health, but their influence should not be overlooked. Understanding how the body changes over time can help women recognize when something may need attention. For students and professionals, protecting health is also an investment in the energy, focus, and resilience needed to learn, work, and thrive.
