As the days grow longer and the flowers begin to bloom, March naturally inspires a fresh start. Many of us think about spring cleaning our homes, organizing our schedules, and refocusing on our health. But one area that is often overlooked is our smile.
At our Burke Dental, we believe spring is the perfect time for a dental reset — a chance to renew, refresh, and restore your oral health for the months ahead.
Winter habits, such as increased sugar intake, missed routines during the holidays, and postponed dental visits, can take a toll on your teeth and gums. A comprehensive dental exam and professional cleaning in early spring can help identify small concerns before they become larger, more costly problems. Preventive care not only protects your smile, but it also supports your overall wellness.
As a holistic dentist serving Burke and the surrounding community, I take a whole-body approach to dental

care. Oral health is closely connected to systemic health, and what we place in our mouths matters.
One important topic I often discuss with patients is the replacement of old silver (amalgam) fillings. Traditional silver fillings contain a mixture of metals, including mercury. While they have been used in dentistry for many decades, many patients today are choosing to have them safely removed and replaced with modern, tooth-colored composite materials.
Composite restorations are not

only more aesthetically pleasing, blending naturally with your smile, but they also allow us to preserve more healthy tooth structure. For patients who are concerned about long-term wellness and reducing metal exposure, replacing old amalgam fillings can be an important part of their dental reset. In our office, we follow strict safety protocols when removing old silver fillings to ensure the process is done carefully and responsibly. Patient safety and comfort are always our top priorities.
Spring is also an excellent time to:
• Schedule overdue cleanings
• Address bleeding gums or gum inflammation
At Burke Dental, we believe great dentistry goes beyond healthy teeth — it’s about trust, comfort, and confidence in your care. Here’s why families across Burke, Fairfax, and Springfield, VA choose Dr. Farzin Ghanavati and his team for their dental needs:
Top-Rated Dentist in Burke, VA – Hundreds of 5-star reviews from happy patients reflect our commitment to excellence, honesty, and gentle care.

Comfortable, Modern Environment – Relax in our clean, high-tech office designed for your comfort and peace of mind.

• Repair worn or cracked teeth

Your smile plays a powerful role in your confidence, your health, and how you connect with others. As your Burke neighborhood dentist, my goal is to provide personalized, comprehensive care in a welcoming and supportive environment. Many of my patients are neighbors and families who have trusted our office for years, and I am honored to serve this wonderful community.
If you have been waiting for the “right time” to prioritize your oral health, consider this your sign. March is the perfect opportunity to refresh your smile and step into spring feeling confident and healthy.
A healthier smile begins with a simple conversation. We look forward to helping you achieve it.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.
People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.
Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.
Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:
Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.
There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

Your smile is often the first thing people notice. It shows up in photos, conversations, and everyday moments—sometimes without you even realizing it. When you feel good about your smile, it shows. When you don’t, it can quietly affect your confidence in ways that add up over time.
Orthodontic treatment isn’t just about straight teeth. It’s about helping you feel comfortable, confident, and proud of your smile at every stage of life.
Many people hesitate to smile fully because they’re self-conscious about their teeth. Crooked teeth, gaps, crowding, or bite issues can make people cover their mouth when they laugh or avoid photos altogether.
Orthodontic treatment helps align your teeth and bite, creating a smile that feels natural and effortless. As your smile improves, so does your confidence—often long before treatment is even finished.
When you like your smile, you tend to:
• Smile more freely in social situations
• Feel more confident at work or school
• Enjoy being in photos instead of avoiding them
• Speak and laugh without hesitation
These small shifts can have a big impact on how you interact with the world and how the world responds to you.
Orthodontics Is About More Than Appearance
While the cosmetic benefits are powerful, orthodontic treatment also improves oral health. Straighter teeth are easier to clean, which can reduce the risk of cavities and gum
disease. A properly aligned bite can help prevent uneven wear on teeth, jaw discomfort, and long-term dental issues.
Feeling good about your smile often goes hand in hand with taking better care of it—creating benefits that last a lifetime.
Treatment Options Are More Flexible Than Ever
Today’s orthodontic options are designed to fit real life. From clear
aligners to modern braces, treatment can be customized to your needs, lifestyle, and goals. Orthodontics is no longer “one size fits all,” and there are discreet, comfortable options for patients of all ages.
It’s never too early—or too late—to invest in your smile.
Choosing orthodontic treatment is an investment in more than your
teeth. It’s an investment in your confidence, your self-image, and the way you feel every time you look in the mirror.
A smile you love can change how you see yourself—and how confidently you move through life. If you’ve ever thought, “I wish I felt better about my smile,” orthodontic treatment may be the first step toward becoming the most confident version of you.

Your smile is one of the first things people notice – make it unforgettable. Whether you’re straightening your teeth for the first time or perfecting your smile before summer, TBraces Orthodontics makes it simple, affordable, and rewarding.
Led by Dr. Hani Thariani, the only Harvard-trained orthodontist in Arlington and Herndon and a Diamond Plus Invisalign® provider, our team has created confident, radiant smiles for over 25 years.
Now’s your moment to enjoy world-class orthodontic care with significant savings – but hurry, this exclusive offer ends soon.

Hair loss can be a very emotional part of the natural aging process, and
seeking ways to curb this process is a challenge. There are many products on the market that claim to re-grow hair, but the results are mixed. Some work for some people, and for others, not so well.
Surgically transplanting hair has come a long way over the past decade - to the point where follicular unit grafting (FUG) is now more widely accepted. It’s not like the old-style
plugs people used to get.
These grafts are indistinguishable from your natural hair and are probably more durable than your natural hair in the long run.
While your natural hair still present on the top and front of your scalp may continue to thin or fall out, the grafted hairs from the sides and back of your head are more likely to be there permanently.

The latest procedure for hair transplantation is follicular unit extraction (FUE), where each hair is harvested and individually placed in a new location on your scalp. By doing this there are no scars to deal with, and the procedure is more tolerable and may even be a little safer.
One of the first FUE devices to be cleared by the FDA for follicular unit harvesting and implantation is the NeoGraft® system, which delivers automation of the FUE technique, the most advanced technique in the hair transplant industry.
This system uses pneumatic controls to precisely extract complete individual hair follicles, which can be immediately transplanted to the selected areas of the scalp. This automated hair transplantation system is the only complete harvesting system on the market and has the only “no touch” implantation technology.
It provides exact harvesting and placement, delivering natural looking results. This advanced technology offers a discrete solution to hair loss, allowing patients to achieve natural looking results with no linear scarring, minimal downtime, and a shorter recovery period. Hair restoration with NeoGraft is unnoticeable, making it your secret to tell.
How the Procedure Works:
Step One: Donor Hair Removal
The procedure begins with hair being removed from the donor area in the back of your head where your hair is genetically programmed to resist testosterone.
Step Two: Separation of the Follicular Units
Each graft is extracted with the same consistency in diameter and length, resulting in a dramatically increased take rate.
Step Three: Creation of the Recipient Sites
The hair transplant surgeon creates recipient sites in the proper angle, direction and orientation according to the artistic hair transplant plan he or she has designed specifically for you.
Step Four: Placement of the Hair Graft
The follicular units are then carefully separated by size. Grafts are transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp. Each graft is meticulously harvested as it naturally occurs and implanted individually to ensure the best results.

Teething is an important developmental milestone, but it can be a challenging time for both babies and parents. Understanding what’s normal, what to expect, and how to provide relief can make the process far less stressful.
Teething: When Does It Start?
Most babies begin teething between 4 and 7 months, although some start earlier or later. The two bottom front teeth (lower central incisors) are usually first, followed by the top front teeth. By age 3, most children have a full set of 20 primary (baby) teeth.
Common signs of teething include:
• Increased drooling
• Chewing on hands or objects
• Mild irritability
• Swollen or tender gums
• Disrupted sleep
Some babies may also have a slight rise in temperature, but high fever, diarrhea, or persistent symptoms are not typical of teething and should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. How to Soothe Teething Discomfort
You can help relieve discomfort safely with:
• A clean, chilled (not frozen) teething ring
• Gently rubbing the gums with a clean finger
• A cool, damp washcloth for baby to chew on
• Infant acetaminophen or ibuprofen (if recommended by your doctor) Avoid teething necklaces and topical numbing gels containing benzocaine, which may pose safety risks.
Maintaining oral hygiene is essential—even before teeth erupt. Once teeth appear, brush twice daily with a soft baby toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).
The Next Stage: Loose Teeth
Around age 6, children begin losing baby teeth to make room for permanent teeth. This stage can last until about age 12. The lower front teeth are typically the first to go, followed by the upper front teeth.
If your child has a loose tooth:
• Encourage gentle wiggling with clean hands
• Avoid forcefully pulling it out
• Offer soft foods if the area is tender
A tooth that is barely attached and bothering your child may be gently removed, but if there is pain, swelling,
or bleeding that doesn’t stop, contact your dentist.
Introducing the Tooth Fairy
The loss of a first tooth is a milestone worth celebrating. The Tooth Fairy tradition can transform a slightly anxious moment into an exciting one. Many families leave the tooth under a
pillow in exchange for a small monetary gift or note of encouragement. The focus should be fun—not financial value.
Teething and tooth loss are normal parts of childhood. With patience, reassurance, and good oral hygiene, you can help your child move confidently through each stage—one smile at a time

Probably one of the most made resolutions, and toughest to fulfill, is the one ‘to exercise’. For back and neck pain sufferers, exercise is crucial to easing chronic pain symptoms and preventing future pain related problems.
This article outlines some tips for really making ‘to exercise’ a part of your life this year.
Starting an Exercise Program
One of the most difficult things about exercise is just getting started. It’s easy to come up with reasons to put exercise off for just another few weeks, but your back will thank you if you just do it.
Hook Up With a Professional Who Understands “Exercise”
Often, a person wants to start ex-
ercising, but just doesn’t know how to begin. For example, going to a gym for the first time can be somewhat intimidating if you don’t know your way around all the machines and weights.
A personal trainer, physical therapist, or athletic chiropractor can get you comfortable with the various apparatus.
More importantly, they can help to design an exercise program that is right for your unique situation (including any back and neck problems) and demonstrate proper technique.
For many people looking to start an exercise program, not only are their muscles out of shape, but also their cardiovascular systems.
These individuals can be particularly prone to frustration (or intimidation) when they become easily winded from just a few minutes of brisk exercise.
These individuals, as well as
many with back and neck problems, are better off starting out with low impact aerobic exercise that creates less jarring on the joints.
Equipment like an exercise bike or exercise ball gives a good workout with low stress. There are many techniques that require some initial training but that can provide excellent results for many patients with back and neck problems, including relaxation: Pilates, for example.
When starting to exercise, it’s easy to get thrown off by schedule changes and use them as an excuse to not start and/or stop exercising. Getting busy at work, going out of town, holidays, extreme weather — these all can cause disruptions in a new exercise routine.
Patients should have some simple exercises in their fitness toolkit that can weather these disruptions and allow some amount of exercise to continue.

Many basic exercises and mobility movements can be done using only a theraband and lacrosse ball.
Get a Health Exam
For many people, a major limiting factor in starting a new exercise program is pain; it is not fun to exercise when it hurts.
Get your problems checked out by a health professional. Chiropractors and Physical Therapists specialize in many symptoms that people complain about every day.
Resolving these problems first might make looking forward to becoming active a reality.

By Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS Sleep & TMJ Therapy
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) are conditions that can severely disrupt daily life. OSA occurs when the airway is blocked during sleep, leading to pauses in breathing. This not only disrupts sleep but also poses significant health risks, such as cardiovascular issues, diabetes, and even cancer.
Temporomandibular Disorder –TMD – affects the jaw joint and the muscles controlling jaw movement. Symptoms often include jaw pain, difficulty chewing, and a clicking or locking of the jaw. These symptoms can vary in intensity and may sometimes lead to chronic discomfort.
Both Sleep Apnea and TMD are often overlooked or misdiagnosed, making awareness crucial for effective management. People experiencing symptoms of either condition should

seek medical evaluation to prevent long-term complications. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of these conditions can help in recognizing the need for timely and appropriate treatment.

Effective diagnosis usually involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and advanced diagnostic tools. In the case of Sleep Apnea, sleep studies are commonly used to measure breathing patterns, while TMD diagnosis may involve imaging techniques like X-rays or MRIs to examine the jaw joint and surrounding tissues. Recognizing the signs and seeking professional help are key steps in managing these disorders. If you look for studies, there are clear links between OSA and TMD.
Both Sleep Apnea and TMD share several risk factors that can exacerbate symptoms. If the discs in the jaw joints are displaced, this will greatly contribute to TMD as well as OSA. Oftentimes, genetics are involved – a family history of OSA and/or TMD is common.
Another important factor is age; the likelihood of developing Sleep Apnea and TMD increases as one gets older. Being overweight is another significant risk factor for Sleep Apnea, as excess fat can obstruct the airway. This excess weight can also put additional stress on the jaw muscles, contributing to TMD symptoms.
Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.
“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”
- D. Thomas
“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.” - Susan
Technological advancements are making significant strides in the diagnosis and treatment of both OSA and TMD. For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, the use of devices like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines has been revolutionary. These machines ensure that airways remain open during sleep by providing a constant flow of air through a mask. A custom fitted dental appliance is made for those who cannot tolerate CPAP.
On the TMD front, laser therapy is being increasingly utilized to treat jaw pain and inflammation. Laser treatments can reduce pain and promote healing by stimulating blood flow and tissue repair. Additionally, advancements in imaging techniques, such as digital X-rays and MRIs, provide detailed views of the jaw joint and surrounding structures. This allows healthcare providers to make more accurate diagnoses and tailor treatments to individual needs. Appliance therapy like the Gelb orthotic and the amazing ALF have come to the forefront in TMD treatment, and coincidentally helps with OSA.
Be sure to talk to a well educated healthcare professional who understands your needs and can analyze the situation correctly.

Like many dental patients, you probably brush your teeth every morning and night, but realize that your
floss hasn’t been used in weeks. There are significant benefits to flossing your teeth every day that you’re missing out on. After reading these four benefits to flossing, you may reconsider waiting “just another day” to floss.
Flossing Is An Effective Defense Against Gingivitis
Inflammation can occur in gum tissue that contains bacteria, plaque, and tartar build-up. Gums that are swollen and bleed when they’re brushed are a natural result of improper dental hygiene. Adding flossing
to your regimen ensures that the debris from between your teeth, as well as any hidden bacteria, plaque, or tartar, is cleared away. Having eliminated the bacteria, your teeth become protected from gingivitis.
Stop Halitosis
With Regular Flossing
Food particles hidden in between your teeth can allow bacteria to build up, adding to your bad breath. Tartar, in particular, contributes heavily to halitosis and often can be found hiding between your teeth. Brushing,

mouthwash, and flossing every day will go a long way towards protecting your teeth.
Flossing Helps Control Diabetes
This comes as a significant surprise to most dental patients. Research has shown that making brushing a regular part of your daily hygiene practices can actually have a huge positive impact on your battle with diabetes. Oral bacteria have been shown to elevate the level of glucose in your blood, making stabilization difficult. Flossing, brushing, and mouthwash combined eliminate bacteria and reduced their effect on your glucose levels.

Your mouth and oral tissues are a direct pathway to many of the organs in your body, including your lungs. This can cause a serious problem when oral bacteria transfer into your lungs. Once seated in your lungs, they can begin causing health concerns related to breathing as you develop respiratory disease.
By making brushing, flossing, and the use of mouthwash a regular part of your daily routine, you’re protecting yourself from a host of issues. If you want to learn more about how flossing can help you preserve your good health, contact your dental provider and get on the road to battling gingivitis, bad breath, and even heart disease.

Dr. Toyer grew up as an “Army brat,” but resided many years in Bowie, Maryland. She attended the University of Virginia and received a degree in Biology and Bioethics in 2003. Dr. Toyer attended dental school at the University of Maryland and took part in the Pediatric Dentistry Clerkship program.

Thermography, also known as digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), is a totally non-invasive clinical imaging procedure that detects thermal differences within the body, which may indicate the presence of disease or physical injury. It can be used in conjunction with other diagnostic tools, for diagnosis and prognosis, as well as monitoring therapy progress.
DITI is used for conditions and injuries, including back injuries, arthritis, headache, nerve damage, unexplained pain, fibromyalgia, RSD (CRPS), dental problems and TMJ, artery inflammation, heart disease, vascular disease, breast
disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, disc disease, inflammatory pain, skin cancer, referred pain syndrome, sprains and strains, stroke screening, whiplash, digestive disorders and many more diseases and dysfunctions in the body.
Images, known as thermograms, can be taken of the whole body or just specific areas, such as a breast scan or a half body scan that scans for hot-spots in all the major organs of the body. These scans can be used as part of an annual wellness screening or for investigation of a specific clinical problem.
The digitized images are stored on a computer and are sent electronically to a themologist (certified doctor) for interpretation and reporting. Your report is color printed and a copy can also be sent to your healthcare professional.

We use a whole body approach by using cold laser therapy to help you detox from Lyme Disease. All individuals with Lyme Disease should detox their body no matter which protocol they choose to use. Let us show you how we strip the biofilm and how we deal with the bacterial, viral, fungal, emotional and toxic components to healing from Lyme.
Unlike most diagnostic tests, thermography is non-invasive, uses no radiation, is painless, and there is no contact with the body.
DITI is FDA approved to detect thermal differences within the body and is very affordable.
Thermography, also known as digital infrared thermal imaging (DITI), is a totally non-invasive clinical imaging procedure that detects thermal differences within the body
This quick and easy test starts with your medical history being
taken before you partially disrobe for the scan to be performed. Standard region of interest exams take approximately fifteen minutes; a half body, thirty minutes; and a full body, forty-five minutes. Your printed report is normally completed within a few days.
Thermography results are intended for use by healthcare providers to assist in evaluation, diagnosis and treatment. They are not intended for use by individuals for self-evaluation or self-diagnosis.
DITI fills a gap in clinical diagnosis in that x-ray, CT, ultrasound and MRI are all tests of anatomy that measure the structures of your body, while thermography shows physiological changes and metabolic processes. It provides another tool to help you and your healthcare professional safely get you back to better health.
Holistic Family Health is a family run clinical facility with services, such as Thermography, Hyperbaric
Full body scans can visualize your pain and early detection gives you treatment options. It is very cost effective, risk-free and provides instant images. It is a useful adjunctive procedure to other diagnostic testing. A full body scan can assess pain and pathology anywhere in the body.

Women often experience health changes that do not fit neatly into a single diagnosis. Symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, mood shifts, digestive issues, sleep disruption, or menstrual irregularities are frequently interconnected. Functional medicine takes a systems-based approach to women’s health, focusing on how hormones, metabolism, immune function, digestion, and lifestyle factors interact over time.
Rather than isolating symptoms, functional medicine emphasizes identifying root causes. Hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, chronic inflammation, stress responses, and environmental exposures can all influence how the body functions. Advanced testing and diagnostics are commonly used to assess biochemical patterns, hormone levels, metabolic markers, food sensitivities, and detoxification pathways. This data helps create a clearer picture of what is driving symptoms, particularly during hormonal transitions such as perimenopause and menopause.
Lifestyle and nutritional guidance play a central role in this approach. Sleep quality, stress management, movement, and dietary patterns can significantly affect hormone regulation and inflammation. Nutritional strategies may focus on stabilizing blood sugar, supporting liver detoxification pathways, improving gut microbiome balance, and addressing micronutrient needs essential for hormone metabolism.
Women’s health concerns addressed through functional medicine often overlap with autoimmune conditions, digestive disorders, metabolic health challenges, chronic pain, and inflammation. By viewing these issues as interconnected rather than separate problems, care becomes more personalized and adaptive over time. Continuous monitoring and follow-up allow treatment plans to evolve as the body responds.
Functional medicine is best understood as an ongoing process rather than a quick fix. It requires collaboration, data-driven decision-making, and attention to both internal physiology and daily habits. For many women, this integrative framework offers a deeper understanding of their health and a pathway toward improved balance, resilience, and longterm well-being.

Common Conditions Treated:
Perimenopause & Menopause – easing hot flashes, mood swings, and hormonal changes
Gut Issues – relief from bloating, abdominal pain, or skin rashes
Fatigue – regain your energy and vitality
Brain Fog & Insomnia – improving focus, clarity, and restful sleep
Unexplained Weight Issues – address root cause of stubborn weight gain
Low Libido – support hormonal and emotional health
Bioidentical hormone therapy is one area often explored in functional women’s health. These hormones are structurally identical to those produced by the human body and may be considered when symptoms are linked to declining or imbalanced estrogen, progesterone, or testosterone levels. Hormonal shifts can affect more than reproductive health; they may influence bone density, cardiovascular health, insulin sensitivity, cognitive function, and emotional well-being. Functional medicine evaluates hormone balance within the broader context of thyroid function, adrenal hormones, gut integrity, and nutrient status rather than addressing hormones in isolation.

As people age, healthcare needs often become more complex. Seniors may manage multiple chronic conditions, take several medications, and experience changes in mobility, cognition, and emotional well-being. Integrative healthcare—an approach that combines conventional medical care with evidence-based holistic therapies—offers a comprehensive solution that focuses not only on treat-
ing disease, but on enhancing overall quality of life.
At its core, integrative healthcare blends traditional medical treatments such as primary care, cardiology, and medication management with complementary therapies including acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy, nutrition counseling, mindfulness practices, and movement-based therapies like yoga or tai chi. This collaborative model allows providers to address the whole person—body, mind, and spirit— rather than isolated symptoms.
One of the most significant benefits for seniors is improved management of chronic pain. Conditions such as arthritis, neuropathy, and back pain are common in older adults and are often treated with medications that may cause side effects or interactions. Integrative therapies like acupuncture, physical therapy, and gentle movement can reduce pain, improve mobility, and decrease reliance

Temporomandibular joint disorders, often called TMJ or TMD, can affect much more than your jaw. Many people do not realize that TMJ dysfunction can contribute to persistent headaches, neck discomfort, and even back pain. At Fairlington Dental, we focus on identifying and treating TMJ related pain so you can enjoy daily life without chronic discomfort.
The temporomandibular joints connect your lower jaw to your skull and allow you to chew, speak, and yawn. When their function is disrupted by muscle tension, misalignment, grinding, or stress, symptoms can extend far beyond the jaw. Headaches, neck strain, and referred discomfort throughout the upper body are common.
Headaches and TMJ
The jaw joints and chewing muscles are closely connected to the muscles and nerves of the head. When the TMJ is irritated or overworked, surrounding muscles tighten, often leading to headaches felt at the temples, around the eyes, or at the base of the skull. Many patients with frequent tension type headaches are unknowingly clenching or grinding their teeth, placing additional strain on these muscles.
Neckaches and TMJ
The jaw, neck, and upper spine function as a connected system. When

At Fairlington Dental, we understand the connection between a healthy smile and a healthy body. As a result, we look at the whole person to discover the reasons a patient may have gum disease or a bad bite. A number of studies link heart disease and other serious conditions to the presence of periodontal (gum) disease. This research makes it vital that we take a Complete Health approach to your dental care. Dr. Rogers will listen to you, conduct a careful assessment, and carefully explain your proposed customized wellness plan. He will then take the time to answer all of your questions. You become a partner in your oral health goals!
Our team has mastered the techniques of gentle dentistry and is skilled at helping patients with any level of apprehension relax and grow comfortable with visiting the dentist. Anxiety and tension have a variety of sources, so it’s important for us to listen to your concerns as well as your goals and history. Then we address your anxieties and proceed with gentle treatment only when you’re ready. We deliver all of this in an office that is environmentally aware, while you enjoy a variety of spa-like amenities during your visit. One of our greatest joys is helping patients smile again, especially those who may not have seen a dentist in a while. You’ll be amazed at how the quality of life can change! We strive to create a partnership with you that starts the moment you walk through our door.

Due to the advances in modern medicine, nutrition and healthy lifestyles, people are living considerably longer than they use to.
Because tooth loss is directly related to age, an increasing number of adults are missing teeth. When an adult reaches the age of 65, he or she many times feels an investment in health is less appropriate.
Due to the advances in
A healthy 65 year old woman will live 23 more years 50% of the time and 29 more years 25% of the time. A healthy 65 year old male will live another 20 years 50% of the time and another 27 years 25% of the time. So from the above, one can see that an investment in their oral health is actually a better investment than a new automobile, that depreciates rapidly after purchase.
Dental implants are 97% successful over 10 years. Lets compare a single tooth replacement with a dental implant verses a three tooth cemented bridge. The estimated life span of a cemented bridge is 50% at 10 years.
Cavities are the most common cause of crown or bridge failure. 15% of the teeth anchoring (abutments)
require root canal treatment. Failure of abutment teeth is 8-12% at 10 years and 30% at 15 years. 80% of teeth adjacent to the sites of missing teeth are with no or minimal fillings.
The potential lifetime cost of a single crown replacement prior to dental implant treatment is at least $9,000 or more. The potential lifetime cost for a three unit fixed (cemented) bridge replacement is at least $19,300$22,300.
The cost of a single implant, crown and abutment in Northern Virginia is $2,777$5,000 or more. So one can see that dental implants are actually a cost effective way to replace missing teeth and maintain their oral health, function and esthetics.

2. Are You Embarrassed by Your Smile or Missing Teeth?
3. Are You Tired of the Daily Hassles of Denture Wear?

A neck lift can be performed for men and women of varying ages who are often frustrated by changes of the appearance of their neck and jawline. Depending on your age, a neck lift can be a short one-hour procedure to remove fat or a 3-hour procedure to remove fat, visible neck bands, and excess skin.
Remove Excess Skin (Cervicoplasty) • Liposuction to Remove Excess Fat
Remove or Alter Neck Muscles (Platysmaplasty)
Liposuction can be performed alone or with surgical removal of the fat under the chin through a small incision under the chin.
In patients with vertical bands in the neck, a platysmaplasty can be performed to reduce the appearance of the bands.
Sometimes a chin implant is recommended to improve the overall contour and help with excess skin.

All Smiles Orthodontics
Many parents assume that they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth before they can see an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that all children get a check-up with an orthodontist no later than seven years of age.
Early consultation allows the orthodontist to identify any subtle problems associated with jaw growth and/or incoming permanent teeth.
As orthodontic treatment not
only involves the teeth but also the surrounding boney structures, it is highly recommended to start treatment before the face and jaws have finished growing.
By age seven, the six-year molars (adult first molars) and incisors have usually erupted. After the first molars erupt the space available for the front teeth does not increase as a child grows. To the contrary, in most people after the permanent molars erupt, the space available for the front teeth decreases with age.
Early treatment can also regulate the width of the dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth or the need for surgical procedures to realign the jaw.
A majority of children will not require orthodontic procedures until their teenage years, however an early exam allows the orthodontist to monitor the child’s growth and development and if indicated begin treatment
at the most appropriate time.
If your child is nearing his or her seventh birthday, schedule an orthodontic consultation appointment. You don’t need to have a referral to see an orthodontist.
Many pro-actively schedule a consultation appointment either as a new patient or to seek a second
opinion.
However, you should see your family dentist for professional cleanings and check-ups every six months, or more often if recommended.
Early treatment may prevent more serious problems from developing and may make treatment at a later age less complicated.

When it comes to your child’s dental development, early intervention can make a lifetime of difference.
One of the most innovative tools used by airway-focused dentists and orthodontists is the ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functional) appliance – a gentle, growth-guidance appliance that helps the body achieve natural balance and healthy development. What the ALF Appliance Does –And What It Isn’t
The ALF is not an expander.
Traditional expanders mechanically widen the palate, but the ALF works in harmony with the body’s own growth patterns. It is a growth-guidance appliance designed to facilitate natural development by gently assisting the tongue in moving the bones of the skull, allowing growth to occur the way nature intended.
The ALF acts almost like a “sur-

At Ashburn Children’s Dentistry and Womb2Grow Wellness, we specialize in identifying the hidden cause of poor sleep, behavioral struggles, and jaw underdevelopment. Our airway-focused approach supports whole-body health and lifelong confidence. Let’s uncover what’s really going on – together. Your child’s jaw and airway development may be the missing link.
rogate tongue,” allowing the brain to redirect resources for growth through functional swallowing, nasal breathing, and a nervous-system reset. Because it is so delicate and precise, the ALF requires meticulous training and expertise to use correctly – its effectiveness depends on the practitioner’s deep understanding of oral-facial development and the connection between posture, airway, and overall health.
The ALF philosophy views the mouth as part of the body’s larger postural and functional system. By supporting balanced growth, proper tongue position, and healthy airway development, this gentle form of growth guidance can positively influence a child’s overall well-being – from sleep and focus to confidence and comfort.
Children who breathe well, sleep well, and swallow properly often experience improvements not just in their dental health but in behavior, learning, and physical comfort as well.
Although orthodontic guidelines often suggest evaluation by age 7, many airway-focused providers emphasize that for certain growth and airway issues, that may already be too late.
Signs of improper jaw development can appear as early as infancy –even within the first few days of life. Babies and toddlers who show trouble latching, snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, difficulty eating solid foods, teeth grinding, frequent ear infections, or speech issues may already be exhibiting early indicators that the jaws and airway are not developing correctly.
If you notice these signs, it’s important to consult a knowledgeable, airway-focused provider who can evaluate your child’s growth patterns and guide proper jaw and brain development. Early detection and proactive, collaborative intervention allow for gentler, holistic treatment and the best long-term outcomes.

Healthy Growth Creates Healthy Smiles – and Healthy Lives.
Ask your pediatric or airwayfocused dentist whether your child might benefit from early evaluation or growth-guidance therapy with the ALF approach.

While the right shoes can complete an outfit, the wrong shoes can lead to back pain. High-heels, platforms, flip-flops, ballet flats, and other types of footwear all have varying effects on the back and spine. For example, shoes with high heels or steep arches lead to over-arching the spine, and extremely flat shoes with thin soles will cause it to absorb the full impact of each step. And, believe it or not, wearing those worn-down shoes that don’t fit properly can cause back aches and pain by throwing off your body’s natural weight distribution. By wearing shoes with at least a half inch thick sole, and proper heel and arch support, you can reduce the risk of lower back pain. Shoes with laces provide the best support for your feet and back, but we all know that sneakers aren’t appropriate for every occasion!
Wearing the wrong shoes isn’t just a fashion faux pas, it can lead to back pain that keeps you off your feet for a while. Here are three tips for building a solid foundation with the right pair
• Purchase Quality Shoes. When shoe shopping, look for shoes with at least a half inch thick sole, rigid heel support, and shock absorption. This is especially important when buying flat shoes such as ballet flats, loafers, flip-flops, and sandals. Making sure the fit is right is also important, as too tight or too big shoes tend to strain the body and back.
• High Heels in Moderation. Many women are aware of the damage that is caused by consistently wearing high heels, yet they are a staple in today’s fashion. To prevent any discomfort, save the heels for walking shorter distances, like around the office, or going out for dinner. Wearing sneakers while commuting to work and then slipping into the stilettos will relieve your back of some of the daily tensions caused by heel height.
• The Right Shoe for the Right Occasion. It’s also important to consider what you will be doing in your shoes when deciding which ones to wear or purchase. While sneakers are the best types of shoes in terms of support, exercising in the wrong kind can lead to more problems than it solves. Finding a shoe with proper arch, heel, and ankle support is extremely important for playing basketball, for example, so wearing running shoes would not be the right style for that occasion. When purchasing sneakers, asking the sales associate about the design and purpose of the shoe can be extremely beneficial and helpful in reducing back pain.

So maybe you’ve been to physical therapy and received exercises, ice or heat, and maybe a massage. Is that all there is? Actually, no! A lot of new technology is helping patients heal faster and better with less effort. Here’s a quick look at the latest advances; shockwave therapy, Class IV lasers, electrified dry needling, electrical acupuncture, steroid delivery via electric transdermal systems, vibration plates, vagal nerve stimulators, and automated ultrasound. These technologies are costly for clinics to buy, so not every clinic will have them, but the good news is some are covered by insurance.
Shockwave therapy sends mechanical waves through tissues and stimulates cellular change. It has helped many people postpone joint replacement for years, restore shoulder range of motion in a single visit, speed healing after injuries, and treat problematic scars.
External vagal nerve stimulators, available since 2020, target the vagus nerve, which influences many bodily systems. Vagal stimulation can enhance neuroplasticity, making your physical therapy exercises more effective. It also may reduce chronic pain, improve digestion, lower stress levels, and support overall recovery.
Class IV lasers, such as MLS lasers (which use multiple wavelengths including non-visible infrared), are producing impressive results. They outperform basic

visible red-light devices and cut healing time in half for bone and soft tissue. MLS lasers are the only commonly available technology that promotes nerve healing. They work for acute injuries, post-surgery or chronic conditions such as tendinitis, bursitis, plantar fasciitis, or back pain. Research shows 80% of people are 80% better after the first treatment!
Dry needling is popular for treating trigger points, tight muscles, and scars. Adding electrical stimulation to dry needling can enhance its effects.
Electrical acupuncture delivers acupuncture-like stimulation without needles. It follows traditional patterns but treatment can take about 10 minutes versus the 30-plus minutes often required for traditional acupuncture. You’ve probably heard of steroid injections for arthritis in the knee, hip, or shoulder. Newer transdermal delivery systems use electrical currents to drive steroids into local tissues without a needle, reducing the risk of systemic steroid exposure.
Vibration plates are used to improve balance, strength, proprioception and bone density. The shaking platform causes small muscle contractions, enhancing exercises like squats and push ups. Or you can just stand on it! Technology is a great addition to manual therapy and targeted exercise, accelerating recovery, reducing pain, and improving outcomes. Integrative care also plays a key role in supporting mental and emotional health. Anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, and cognitive decline are prevalent among older adults. Mindfulness practices, counseling, nutrition support, and stress-reduction techniques can complement conventional treatments to improve mood, sleep quality, and overall mental clarity. This holistic support is especially important for seniors facing life transitions, social isolation, or caregiving challenges.
Another advantage is personalized, preventive care. Integrative healthcare emphasizes lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, hydration, and stress management—all of which influence aging and disease progression. Providers work with seniors
to create individualized care plans that align with their goals, values, and daily routines, promoting long-term wellness rather than reactive treatment.
Perhaps most importantly, integrative healthcare empowers seniors to take an active role in their health. By offering multiple therapeutic options and encouraging collaboration between providers, patients feel heard, respected, and supported. This patient-centered approach often leads to higher satisfaction, better adherence to care plans, and improved outcomes.
For seniors seeking a balanced, compassionate approach to health, integrative healthcare offers a pathway to greater comfort, independence, and vitality—supporting not just longer life, but a better quality of life at every stage of aging.
jaw muscles are overactive due to clenching or bite imbalance, neck muscles often compensate, resulting in tightness and discomfort. Poor posture can intensify this strain. Over time, TMJ tension can contribute to persistent neck pain and stiffness.
Backaches and TMJ
Although less obvious, TMJ dysfunction can also influence the upper back. Muscle imbalance in the jaw affects posture and head position. When the neck and shoulders remain tense, the upper back muscles compensate, which can lead to ongoing aching and fatigue.
Recognizing TMJ Symptoms
TMJ dysfunction does not always present as severe jaw pain. Other symptoms may include:
• Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint
• Clicking or popping when opening or closing the mouth
• Difficulty chewing or changes in bite
• Ear pain, pressure, or ringing
• Frequent headaches or migraines
• Neck tension or stiffness
• Discomfort extending into the shoulders or upper back
Many patients are surprised to learn their symptoms trace back to the jaw, which is why a thorough TMJ assessment is an important step toward lasting relief.
What You Can Do
If you regularly experience headaches, neck tension, or back discomfort that seems connected to jaw movement or clenching, you should consult your dentist. Identifying whether TMJ dysfunction contributes to these symptoms is the first step toward meaningful relief. A comprehensive evaluation can reveal bite imbalance, muscle strain, or joint dysfunction that may be driving your pain.
TMJ Care
Your local dentist will take an integrative approach to TMJ care that considers both oral health and overall well being. Treatment may include custom oral appliances designed to support proper jaw alignment and reduce strain on surrounding muscles.
When the jaw functions in balance, it can help restore comfort not only in your smile but throughout your head, neck, and upper body.
