Missing teeth affect more than your appearance. They can impact your ability to chew, speak, smile confidently, and maintain long-term oral health. Fortunately, dental implants offer a reliable, natural-looking solution.
What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once healed, it supports a custom
crown, bridge, or full-arch restoration.
Dental implants are considered the gold standard for tooth replacement because they restore function, appearance, and help preserve the jawbone.
What Are My Options For Replacing Missing Teeth?
Patients have several options depending on their needs:
• Single dental implants for one missing tooth
• Implant-supported bridges for multiple missing teeth

• Implant-supported dentures for improved stability
• All-on-4 dental implants for fullarch tooth replacement
• Traditional bridges or removable dentures
What Happens If Missing Teeth Are Not Replaced?
Many patients believe missing teeth are only a cosmetic concern. However, tooth loss can cause significant oral health problems, including:
• Jawbone loss and facial aging
• Shifting of neighboring teeth

• Difficulty chewing certain foods
• Changes in speech
• Increased risk of additional tooth loss
Delaying treatment can make future restoration more complex.
What Is All-on-4?
All-on-4 is an advanced solution for patients missing most or all of their teeth. Four strategically placed implants support a full arch of fixed replacement teeth. In many cases, patients can receive a temporary set of teeth the same day.
Benefits include:
• Fixed, non-removable teeth
• Improved chewing ability
• Natural appearance
• Reduced need for bone grafting
At Burke Dental, we believe great dentistry goes beyond healthy teeth — it’s about trust, comfort, and confidence in your care. Here’s why families across Burke, Fairfax, and Springfield, VA choose Dr. Farzin Ghanavati and his team for their dental needs:

Comfortable, Modern Environment – Relax in our clean, high-tech office designed for your comfort and peace of mind.

• Faster treatment time
What Are the Advantages Of Dental Implants?
Dental implants offer numerous benefits:
• Natural look and feel
• Long-term durability
• Preservation of jawbone health
• Greater comfort and stability
• Better chewing function
• Improved confidence
• Protection of neighboring healthy teeth
Unlike traditional dentures, implants help maintain bone structure and provide a secure foundation for replacement teeth.
Am I a Candidate For Dental Implants?
Most healthy adults with missing teeth may qualify for dental implants. Even patients with some bone loss may be candidates through advanced procedures or All-on-4 treatment. A comprehensive examination and 3D imaging evaluation can determine the best option.

By Jacqueline D. Griffiths, MD New View Eye Center
Many of us have heard the saying “your eyes are the window to your health”. This is true because many health conditions are first detected in the Retina (the retina captures the light that enters your eye and helps translate it into the images you see).
It is well known that diabetes and high blood pressure can damage blood vessels, which then causes damage to your retina. Inflammatory conditions can also cause damage. Eye injuries can damage your retina and the macula.
Why Is Retinal Screening Important and Is It Worth It?
Signs of high blood pressure or hypertension, diabetes, brain tumors, and some forms of cancer are first evident in the retina. This is well before other signs appear throughout the body. Detecting such health issues early is vital in treating them. Finding retinal disorders as early as possible is critical to potentially preventing serious disease progression
and even vision loss. In addition to helping detect diseases early, retinal images provide a permanent and historical record of changes in your eye. With today’s electronic medical records applications, these images can be compared side-by-side, year after year, to discover even subtle changes and help monitor your health.

While dilation still constitutes a complete eye exam, retinal imaging for screening or to follow diseases, provides a complete picture of not only your eye health but also your health in general.

Retina exams are part of any comprehensive eye exam no matter what your age. But unless you need glasses or have other eye conditions, you may not be seeing an eye doctor regularly. If you don’t, you should start getting eye exams at least every 2-4 years. While screening retinal imaging is not covered by insurance, it will be covered if following a known retinal disease.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.
People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.
Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.
Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:
Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.
There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

Your smile is often one of the first things people notice about you. Whether you are speaking at work, laughing with friends, or taking photos, your smile plays a major role in confidence and self-image. Unfortunately, many people feel selfconscious about stained teeth, chips, gaps, worn enamel, or aging dental work. The good news is that modern cosmetic dentistry offers comfortable and highly effective ways to achieve a complete “Smile Refresh.”
A Smile Refresh is a personalized approach to improving the appearance of your teeth and gums while also supporting oral health. Unlike a major full-mouth reconstruction, many smile refresh treatments are minimally invasive and can often be completed in just one or two visits.
One of the most popular options is professional teeth whitening. Over time, coffee, tea, red wine, smoking, and even aging can discolor teeth. Professional whitening treatments can brighten smiles several shades faster and more effectively than over-thecounter products. Many patients notice an immediate improvement in their appearance after whitening alone.
For chipped, uneven, or worn teeth, cosmetic bonding is another excellent solution. Using tooth-colored composite material, dentists can reshape and repair imperfections quickly and affordably. Bonding can often be completed in a single appointment and provides natural-looking results.
Porcelain veneers are another popular Smile Refresh treatment. Veneers are thin porcelain shells customdesigned to fit over the front surface of teeth. They can dramatically improve discoloration, gaps, minor misalignment, uneven teeth, and worn enamel. Veneers are especially popular among patients seeking a more youthful, symmetrical smile.
Patients with missing teeth may benefit from dental implants or cosmetic bridges, which restore both appearance and function. Missing teeth can affect confidence, speech, chew-
ing ability, and even facial structure over time. Replacing them can create a healthier, more complete smile while helping preserve jawbone support.
Clear aligner therapy has also become a leading choice for adults wanting straighter teeth without traditional braces. Modern aligners are discreet, comfortable, and removable, making them ideal for busy adults who previously avoided orthodontic treatment.
A Smile Refresh can also include replacing old silver fillings or outdated crowns with modern tooth-colored restorations that blend naturally with surrounding teeth while improving durability and aesthetics.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of a Smile Refresh is emotional. Patients often report feeling more confident in social situations, professional environments, and personal relationships after
improving their smile. Many smile more often, speak more confidently, and feel younger overall.
If you have been hiding your smile or delaying treatment, now may be the perfect time to explore your options. Even small cosmetic improvements can create dramatic results that help you look healthier, feel more confident, and truly love your smile again.

A 64-year-old female patient came to me for a consultation concerning her severely wornout lower front teeth and chronic neck pain. Her examination revealed that she has been (bruxing) grinding her teeth for years which led to the loss of occlusal vertical dimension, which means she has lost the proper length on all her teeth which contributed to her chronic neck pain. Unbeknownst to her, all her back teeth were severely worn down as well.
After doing a comprehensive examination and record taking, a detailed treatment plan was developed. I recommended the Bioclear method versus porcelain veneers and crowns to increase her occlusal vertical dimension to 7 millimeters so as not to remove tooth structure. Immediately upon completion, the patient’s neck pain completely disappeared. To date, she is still pain free.
Bioclear is an alternative to traditional dental methods for

enhancing a smile and preserving teeth. Rather than grinding down a tooth to prepare for a veneer, which requires dentists to remove about an average of 47% of the tooth structure and 76% for a crown. The Bioclear Method of ensconcing the natural tooth structure retains the natural tooth enamel with the added benefit of durability and strength. It is certainly a very conservative approach because
it is considered additive dentistry.
As patient expectations continue to evolve, minimally invasive treatment options are becoming increasingly important in modern dentistry. By preserving healthy tooth structure whenever possible, clinicians can provide solutions that not only enhance aesthetics and function but also support longterm oral health and patient well-being.

BIOCLEAR PREPARATION
Bioclear allows dentists to conserve healthy tooth structure.

VENEER PREPARATION
Veneers require dentists to remove an average of 47% of the tooth structure prior to the procedure.

Choosing a home care agency for a loved one can feel overwhelming. Asking the right questions can help families feel informed, confident, and prepared to choose a provider that offers safe, compassionate, and dependable care.
1. What services do you provide?
A quality agency should clearly explain its services, including companionship, personal care, dementia support, and recovery assistance.
2. How do you create a care plan?
Look for agencies that personalize care based on the client’s health needs, routines, goals, and preferences.
3. How quickly can care begin?
Emergencies happen. A reliable agency should be able to respond quickly and organize care efficiently.
4. Are Caregivers screened and background checked?
Ask about background checks, reference verification, and hiring standards to ensure safety and professionalism.

Losing a tooth affects more than your smile. It can impact how you speak, how you chew, and even the shape of your face. Fortunately, tooth replacement options have come a long way. Today’s solutions focus on comfort, function, and a natural look. Understanding your options can help you make the best choice for your long-term health and confidence.
Dental implants are considered the closest option to a natural tooth. A small titanium or ceramic post is placed in the jawbone where it fuses with the bone over time. This provides a strong foundation for a crown or bridge. Dental implants help prevent bone loss and can last for many years with proper care. Full-arch options like All-on-4 can even replace an entire set of teeth using just four implants in each arch. These solutions provide stability and help restore normal chewing and speech.
A dental bridge fills the space left by one or more missing teeth by anchoring to the healthy teeth on either side. Bridges are a good choice when you want a fixed solution without surgery. They offer a natural appearance and restore function, although they do rely on the strength of neighboring teeth and may not prevent bone loss in

At Fairlington Dental, we understand the connection between a healthy smile and a healthy body. As a result, we look at the whole person to discover the reasons a patient may have gum disease or a bad bite. A number of studies link heart disease and other serious conditions to the presence of periodontal (gum) disease. This research makes it vital that we take a Complete Health approach to your dental care. Dr. Rogers will listen to you, conduct a careful assessment, and carefully explain your proposed customized wellness plan. He will then take the time to answer all of your questions. You become a partner in your oral health goals!
Our team has mastered the techniques of gentle dentistry and is skilled at helping patients with any level of apprehension relax and grow comfortable with visiting the dentist. Anxiety and tension have a variety of sources, so it’s important for us to listen to your concerns as well as your goals and history. Then we address your anxieties and proceed with gentle treatment only when you’re ready. We deliver all of this in an office that is environmentally aware, while you enjoy a variety of spa-like amenities during your visit. One of our greatest joys is helping patients smile again, especially those who may not have seen a dentist in a while. You’ll be amazed at how the quality of life can change! We strive to create a partnership with you that starts the moment you walk through our door.

As the school year comes to an end, families begin preparing for vacations, camps, sports, and summer activities. While parents often focus on report cards and busy summer schedules, one important health priority is often overlooked: dental check-ups.
Scheduling a dental visit at the
end of the school year is one of the best ways to help children maintain healthy teeth and avoid unexpected dental problems during the summer months. With more free time and fewer academic demands, summer is the perfect opportunity to address dental concerns before they become larger issues.
Routine dental check-ups are about more than simply cleaning teeth. These visits allow dentists to
monitor a child’s oral development, identify cavities early, evaluate bite alignment, and check for signs of gum inflammation or enamel wear. Catching small problems early often means simpler, less expensive treatment and less discomfort for the child.
Summer is also an ideal time for preventive care. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup that regular brushing may miss, helping reduce the risk of cavities and

gum disease. Fluoride treatments and dental sealants can provide additional protection, especially for children who are more prone to decay.

At Elite Pediatric Dentistry, we make going to the dentist a joy – not a fear. From toddlers to teens, our kid-friendly, anxiety-free care helps every child feel safe, seen, and celebrated.
Led by Dr. April Toyer, a Board Certified Pediatric Dentist with a gift for connecting with kids (even the anxious ones!), we’re here to build lifelong confidence – one smile at a time.
During the school year, it can be difficult to schedule appointments without missing class time or extracurricular activities. Summer offers parents more flexibility for dental visits, follow-up appointments, orthodontic consultations, or recommended treatments.
Sports and outdoor activities also increase during the summer months, making dental protection especially important. Children participating in sports camps, swimming, biking, baseball, basketball, or soccer are at greater risk for dental injuries. A dental visit is a good time to discuss custom mouthguards and ways to protect teeth from chips, fractures, or tooth loss.
Another concern during summer is changing routines. Children may snack more often, consume sugary drinks, stay up later, and become less consistent with brushing and flossing habits. These changes can increase the risk of cavities if preventive care is neglected.
Parents can help support healthy summer smiles by encouraging:
• Brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste
• Daily flossing
• Drinking water instead of sugary sports drinks or sodas
• Limiting sticky, sugary snacks
• Wearing mouthguards during sports
• Replacing worn toothbrushes regularly
Orthodontic evaluations are also common during this time of year. Summer can be an excellent opportunity for children to begin braces or Invisalign treatment because there is time to adjust before returning to school in the fall.
A healthy smile affects more than appearance—it supports speech, nutrition, confidence, and overall health. By scheduling an end-of-school dental check-up, parents can help ensure their children begin summer healthy, comfortable, and ready to enjoy every activity with confidence.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, commonly known as TMJ or TMD, affects the joints and muscles responsible for jaw movement. The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull and play an essential role in speaking, chewing, yawning, and facial movement. When these joints become irritated, inflamed, or misaligned, patients can experience a wide range of painful and frustrating symptoms.
TMJ disorders are more common than many people realize and can affect individuals of all ages. In some cases, symptoms are mild and temporary. For others, TMJ pain can become chronic and significantly interfere with daily life.
One of the most common signs of TMJ disorder is jaw pain or tenderness, especially near the ears, cheeks, or temples. Patients may also experience clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth. Some people notice their jaw locking, difficulty chewing, facial soreness, or limited jaw movement.
TMJ disorders are also strongly associated with headaches and neck pain. Because the jaw muscles and surrounding nerves are closely connected to the head, neck, and shoulders, dysfunction in the jaw can create widespread muscular tension. Many patients suffering from chronic migraines or tension headaches are surprised to discover that TMJ dysfunction may be contributing to their symptoms.
Several factors can contribute to TMJ disorders. Teeth grinding and clenching, also known as bruxism, are among the most common causes. Stress and anxiety often increase jaw tension, particularly during sleep. Arthritis, jaw injuries, bite misalignment, poor posture, and repetitive strain on the jaw can also play a role.
Diagnosing TMJ disorders typically involves a physical examination, evaluation of jaw movement, and a review of symptoms. In some cases, imaging such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI studies may be recommended to evaluate the joint structure and sur-
Fortunately, many TMJ cases can be successfully treated without surgery. Treatment often focuses on reducing inflammation, relaxing muscles, correcting jaw function, and relieving stress on the joints. Oral appliances, such as Physiologic Orthotics, are used to decompress the jaw joints so that the muscles of the head and neck can relax. Orthotics are different from night guards, in that you can leave them in your mouth all day, even while eating. They are quickly
adapted to and highly indiscernible.
Some patients benefit from posture correction and exercises designed to strengthen and relax the muscles surrounding the jaw, neck, and shoulders. Stress management techniques, including relaxation exercises and behavioral therapy, may also help decrease jaw clenching and muscle tension.
Once the jaw position has been stabilized and symptoms resolved, patients can elect how they would like
to maintain the “Orthotic Position” of their lower jaw. Options may include Whole Smile Rejuvenation, Orthodontic Therapy, or long term orthotic wear. Living with chronic jaw pain, headaches, or facial tension can affect sleep, eating, concentration, and overall quality of life. The good news is that TMJ disorders are highly treatable, especially when identified early. If you are experiencing difficulty chewing, TMJ sounds like clicking or grinding, neck or facial pain, please call us to arrange a consultation... Start living life again!

At Aesthetic Dentistry by Design, Dr. Robert Bryce combines advanced technology, artistic precision, and compassionate care to help you look better, feel better, and smile with confidence again. Whether you want a brighter smile, relief from TMJ pain, or full smile restoration, our team creates personalized treatment plans designed around YOU.

By Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS Sleep & TMJ Therapy
The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) play an important role in both oral health and overall wellness. Located just in front of each ear, these small joints connect the lower jaw to the skull and allow essential movements such as chewing, speaking, and breathing. Although they are small, problems with the TMJs can affect many areas of the body.
What Are the TMJs?
The TMJs function like hinges, allowing the jaw to move smoothly. Inside each joint is an articular disc, a cushionlike structure that helps keep the joint properly aligned and prevents the bones from rubbing together during movement. When the joints and discs are functioning properly, jaw movement feels effortless. However, when the disc becomes displaced or the joint becomes inflamed, the mechanics of the jaw can be

disrupted. Because the TMJs are closely connected to the muscles, nerves, and bones of the head, neck, and shoulders, dysfunction can contribute to a variety of symptoms beyond the jaw itself.
TMJ disorders may develop due to disc displacement, inflammation, injury, or wear and tear. Common symptoms include:
Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.
“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”
- D. Thomas
“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.”
- Susan

Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS
• Jaw pain or tenderness
• Headaches or migraines
• Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds in the jaw
• Difficulty chewing or discomfort while eating
• Neck pain and stiffness
• Dizziness or balance problems
Many people do not immediately associate these symptoms with their jaw joints, which can delay diagnosis and treatment. Over time, untreated TMJ disorders may worsen. Chronic inflammation can contribute to degeneration of the jaw joint and surrounding structures, leading to increased pain and dysfunction.
Recognizing early warning signs is one of the best ways to prevent long-term complications. Symptoms such as jaw clicking or popping are often dismissed as harmless, but they can indicate the beginning stages of joint dysfunction. When TMJ problems are identified early, treatment is generally less invasive and more effective. Depending on the cause and severity of the condition, treatment may include custom oral appliances to improve jaw position and reduce strain on the joints, physical therapy to improve jaw and neck function, and evaluation of contributing factors such as airway obstruction or bite imbalances.
Advanced imaging, including MRI and CBCT scans, can help clinicians accurately assess the condition of the joints and develop a personalized treatment plan.
The TMJs influence much more than your ability to chew and speak. When functioning properly, they support comfort, mobility, and overall well-being. When problems develop, they can contribute to widespread discomfort and reduced quality of life.
Paying attention to symptoms such as jaw pain, clicking, popping, headaches, or neck discomfort can help you seek care before significant damage occurs. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent complications, improve function, and help restore overall health and quality of life.

Personalization is the new name of the game in senior living. It touches every aspect of life within a thriving senior living community, from care preferences and dining experiences to wellness and lifestyle programming.
For forward-thinking operators, personalization has long been a priority, including at Inspīr Embassy Row, a luxury senior living community in one of Washington D.C.’s most distinguished neighborhoods.
Today, however, the concept has evolved. The industry is moving beyond simply knowing residents’ routines, histories, and preferences, though those remain essential. Modern personalization is about creating experiences, services, and support that truly adapt alongside residents as their needs and preferences change.
Care is one area where that evolution is particularly evident. Through close clinical observation and collaboration with residents and their
families, Inspīr Embassy Row has designed Aura, an intentional program for residents experiencing subtle cognitive changes.
Aura provides structure and gentle support while preserving independence and quality of life. In the past, once cognitive changes became apparent, residents would often transition directly into memory care, where safety, security, and support were the primary focus. Today, communities recognize that full memory care may be a step too far for individuals with more subtle changes. Programs like Aura help fill that gap, offering a more relaxed yet highly personalized setting.
Wellness has also taken on new meaning. Social and emotional engagement have always been essential components of a thriving senior living community. Today, wellness extends further, blending physical, intellectual, social, and emotional well-being into a more comprehensive approach.
Think salt room therapy, swim courses, yoga, tai chi, consistently bal-

anced and delicious meals throughout the day, and an afternoon lecture from a local museum curator. At Inspīr Embassy Row, wellness goes beyond book clubs and bingo, though both remain community favorites. Residents increasingly expect experiences that align with their interests and passions while fostering the connections that contribute to overall quality of life.
Personalization also extends to hospitality. And increasingly, proactive hospitality. Today’s older adults know what they want, and the communities that rise to the occasion anticipate needs before they’re expressed. Scheduling transportation to an excursion before it’s requested, noticing

apartment preferences, pulling out a chair, or leaving a handwritten note after housekeeping visits – these small moments create a more thoughtful and individualized experience.
The communities embracing this new level of personalization are setting a new standard for senior living. Whether through nuanced levels of support, wellness experiences that help residents thrive, or hospitality that anticipates individual needs, personalization is no longer a differentiator. It’s an expectation.
Inspīr Embassy Row is welcoming residents. Call 202.293.2100 or visit inspirseniorliving.com to schedule your personal tour.

Patients often ask about the type of toothbrush they are using and if it is most effective for their individual mouths. It is important to find a toothbrush that is comfortable and works well to encourage the frequency of brushing for kids and adults alike.
Your toothbrush should fit in your mouth comfortably and allow you to easily reach all of your teeth. The head should cover one to two teeth at a time. Larger heads may be difficult to maneuver inside of the mouth to reach difficult areas, especially for those with smaller mouths.
Adults should take over brushing for their child until they feel that their
child can brush all surfaces effectively and for two minutes. Toothbrushes for children should have smaller heads, and larger handles to make it easier for their little hands to grasp. If your child is smaller or larger than their peers or has a delayed or advanced dental development, ask your dentist for the appropriate size toothbrush. A large handled toothbrush is also recommended for those individuals with

limited dexterity.
Soft-bristled toothbrushes are good at removing plaque and debris to your teeth without causing a great deal of damage to the supporting tooth structures. Medium to hard bristles can cause a condition called recession where the gum tissue can become lowered away from the teeth exposing root surfaces. For increased protection bristles can be purchased with rounded tips.
Powered toothbrushes are a great option for those who have limited manual dexterity. Those with braces or intraoral appliances may also benefit from a powered toothbrush. Powered toothbrushes often include a timer and help encourage longer brushing and make it fun for your child.
No matter what toothbrush you choose, make sure that you are brushing at a 45 degree angle in a circular motion for at least two minutes morning and night. Include flossing at least once a day. Your toothbrush should be replaced every three months, or when they show wear. Your toothbrush should also be changed after every illness to prevent reinfection.
Looking for the American Dental Association, seal of approval on your toothbrush can be a good start to picking the right toothbrush. If you have any question about the right toothbrush or brushing technique, be sure to ask your dentist at your next six month check up.

The belief of the mouth-body connection (oral systemic connection) is not new. Benjamin Rush, MD and a signer of our Declaration of Independence, noticed that people’s health improved after the extraction of diseased teeth. Today we know that infected teeth and gums can severely effect people’s health in ways that were once unthinkable.
People with periodontitis (gum infection with bone loss) are one and a half to two times more at risk for fatal cardiovascular disease. The bacteria from gum infections can easily enter the bloodstream and ultimately wind up in the heart.
People with non-insulin dependent diabetes (diabetes type 2) are three times more prone to develop destructive periodontal disease.
There is a direct correlation with patients with periodontal disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Periodontal disease precedes rheumatoid arthritis.
There is a clear relationship between obesity (upper body obesity) and periodontitis. Recent studies show how people with normal weight that exercise have a lower incidence of periodontitis and better blood glucose control.
There is a correlation between advanced Alzheimer’s disease and poor oral health. Scientist at the School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Central Lancashire in the UK, have discovered the presence of a substance (lipopolysaccharides) from the bacterium Porphyromonas gingivalis in the brains of those with Alzheimer’s disease. This bacteria is present in people that have gum or periodontal disease.
Periodontal disease, tooth decay, uncleaned dentures, orthodontic and TMJ appliances may promote respiratory ailments such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. The microorganisms from gum and tooth infections can be aspirated into the lungs and cause pneumonia.
Pregnant women due to hormonal
changes are more prone to periodontal disease. Researchers at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Birmingham Alabama revealed pregnant women with periodontal disease are six times more likely to have a premature delivery and a low birth weight baby.
Researchers at Case Western University have found a link between periodontal disease and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This explains why people with HIV infections and periodontal disease have greater viral titters in the saliva than
HIV patients with healthy gums.
A recent major discovery has exposed insights into a group of microorganisms called “microbial dark matter.” Thus named because these microbes are or were uncultivable in the laboratory. This microorganism has a role in periodontal inflammation, gastrointestinal and vaginal inflammatory disease.
Periodontal and tooth infections, and infections in general, can cause fatigue. I tell my patients that their overall energy level will improve after the treatment of periodontal disease and
the removal of tooth infections. All of them tell me they have improved health and increased energy levels after the treatment of such conditions. Many times dentists are the first health care provider that picks up on diabetes, leukemia, scurvy, measles, cancer and other diseases. General health and oral health share similar causal and behavior mechanisms. Maintaining a healthy mouth and regular dental examinations, dental cleanings and practicing daily oral hygiene is essential and goes hand in hand with overall health.

Dental Implants Replace Missing Teeth for Young and Old. Nearly Everyone Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants AND There are Hardly Any Medical Problems and Prevent You from Having Dental Implant Treatments.

If you are experiencing menopause, andropause or a hormonal imbalance, you know that hormones can have a profound impact on your physical and emotional health. You may already realize the potential value of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to replenish your hormone levels and regulate your body.
Today, there are more options than ever before when it comes to HRT, and treatments such as bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can significantly minimize or even eliminate many of the symptoms related to hormonal changes.
In recent years, hormone BHRT (also known as replacement pellet therapy) has become an increasingly popular option for both men and women seeking to re-establish their sense
of well-being. So, how do you know if BHRT is right for you? By knowing your body, addressing the symptoms and making an informed choice and take the next step toward wellness.

1. Ease of Use: Unlike other hormone administration methods, BHRT or pellet therapy does not require you to remember to take medication on a daily or weekly basis. Instead, hormone pellets require only a short outpatient procedure two to four times a year.
2. Steady Dosage: Hormone pellets are designed to deliver a more physiologic, steady, and predictable dose of hormones over the course of sev-
eral months. This helps you avoid the noticeable peaks and valleys caused by some other administration methods and may help improve symptoms more consistently.
3. Better Adherence: Methods like pills, patches, creams, gels, and injections may produce good results, but they only work if you remember to take them. Even a small deviation from your dosing schedule could compromise your results. Hormone pellets eliminate this risk by taking patient error out of the equation, potentially allowing you to experience greater therapeutic benefits.
Virtually anyone who is a candidate for hormone replacement therapy is a candidate for pellets. You may be a good candidate for hormone pellet therapy if you experience any of the following:
1. Significant menopausal symptoms that include headaches, sleep problems, painful intercourse, mood changes, night sweats, decreased
cognitive function, or memory loss
2. Anxiety
3. Depression
4. Fatigue
5. Low energy
6. Erectile dysfunction
Many people will experience hormone imbalance at some point in their lives, especially during middle age when hormone levels naturally begin to decline. However, other factors, such as stress, poor nutrition, and lack of exercise, can also contribute to hormonal imbalances.
The symptoms of hormone imbalance can be tricky to identify and may resemble other conditions. If you think your symptoms could be related to hormone imbalance, NOVA Pain & Rehab Center can help to get you feeling great again using BIO-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT).

Different lasers work in different ways, and each has its own unique advantage. Here’s a quick overview of what we may recommend, based on your skin and your goals:
• Ablative Lasers (CO2, Erbium): Gently remove the outer skin layer to address deeper lines, scars, or pigmentation
• CO2 Lasers: Best for significant sun damage or deeper wrinkles
• Erbium Lasers: Ideal for moderate resurfacing, especially in lighter to medium skin tones
• Non-Ablative Lasers (YAG, Fractional): Stimulate skin repair without removing the top layer
• YAG Laser: Penetrates deeper for subtle improvements with less surface impact
• Fractional Lasers: Treat microzones of skin, speeding up healing and lowering risk
• IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): Best for targeting redness, sunspots, or mild unevenness – without any downtime
We’ll talk through each option with you and help you understand

VASA Cosmetic – Where Science Meets Beauty
what will work best for your needs and your lifestyle.
Is This Treatment Right For You?
Laser resurfacing can be a great option if you’re looking to improve:
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Uneven texture or tone
• Acne scarring
• Sun damage or age spots
However, your skin type and medical history play a role. If you have a darker skin tone, certain types of lasers may carry a higher risk of pigment changes. We always customize treatment to ensure safety and optimal results.
This treatment may not be recommended if you have active breakouts, have recently had other cosmetic procedures, or have certain medical conditions. That’s why we’ll start with a careful evaluation – to make sure everything is right before we begin. What Happens During the Procedure
We start with a pre-treatment consultation to prepare your skin and answer your questions. You’ll be advised to avoid sun exposure, and we may recommend certain skincare products to prep your skin.
On the day of your treatment, we’ll apply a numbing cream or use local anesthesia for comfort. The laser device is then passed gently across your skin in targeted areas. The procedure takes anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour depending on your treatment plan. You might feel a warming sensation or light pressure. Most patients say it feels similar to a strong facial or light sunburn.
Recovery & Results
Healing looks different depending on the type of laser used. With more intense lasers (like CO2), expect a few days of redness, swelling, or flaking. Gentler lasers, like fractional or IPL, may have minimal downtime. Either way, we’ll give you a full guide for how to care for your skin afterward. During healing, your skin may feel sensitive. It’s important to avoid direct sun, use gentle skincare, and stay hydrated. Most patients start seeing visible improvement in tone and texture within a week or two, with full results improving over time. For lasting results, you may be recommended to do more than one session—but the outcome is worth it. You’ll enjoy smoother skin, fewer wrinkles, and a refreshed complexion.

Family dentistry has been a way of life for me, and the passion for caring for children is in my genes. My mother, Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru, also a pediatric dentist, was my first inspiration towards family dentistry. Having started my journey in family care working as a pediatric dental assistant at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I spent many summers as my mother’s mentee. Watching what seemed like magical healing art she deployed while treating her patients and knowing the need and the power of proactive preventive dental health for children, I chose a career specializing in pediatric dentistry.
It is an honor to join my mother in practice at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry where I get to fulfill my commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive and transformative dental experience, with compassion and fun! Having matured as an integrative laser pediatric dental surgeon and absorbing the ethos of Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I work tirelessly to stay abreast of emerging research, and improve the quality of life for children by learning from the world’s leading researchers and clinicians. Through these means, we are continually integrating critical aspects of oral structure, craniofacial development, and its impact on the pediatric airway in the service of providing optimal patient outcomes. Caring for children is so powerful and rewarding and with that, understanding the importance of utilizing gentle and minimal intervention therapies. Treating the source of their issues—instead of the symptoms—and focusing on early prevention, has been critical to my role in educating parents and assisting their blossoming child’s development into a healthy and resilient adult. hold an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York, where I studied Psychology.
received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and completed my Pediatric Residency at Interfaith Department of Dental Medicine in Brooklyn, NY, where I served in a leadership role as Chief Resident. Dr. Jeffrey Brown grew up in the state of Maine and went to Bowdoin College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1982. He accepted early decision into the Georgetown School of Dentistry, and graduated from there in 1986. While at Georgetown, Dr. Brown worked in the Neurology Department as an assistant on a project that involved studying the regeneration of nerve tissue in the spinal column after major trauma.
Upon graduation from Georgetown Dental School, Dr. Brown worked for a short time as an associate in a practice in Falls Church, VA. From there, he moved on and built his own practice in the Fairlington neighborhood in Arlington, VA, creating one of the largest practices ever seen on the East Coast.

Dr. Brown took a short sabbatical to help raise his four young children and to continue his education. It was then that he began the process of understanding sleep apnea and how it correlates to TMJ treatment. His knowledge in the combined fields of TMJ, sleep and orthodontics has given him a perspective unlike most other practitioners who perform basic dentistry. In addition, Dr. Brown has also learned the advanced techniques involved in expanding an airway so that both children and adults can breathe better. His training continued over time at the famous Sleep Medicine Center near the Emory University Hospital. He is a certified Fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, awarded the Level of Legacy with the ALF Interface Academy and holds memberships with many academies.
In 2013, Dr. Brown met Dr. Brendan Stack and was immediately impressed with the success Dr. Stack had in treating TMJ cases and being able to repair so many damaged lives. For Dr. Brown, helping people by dealing with their debilitating TMJ issues became his second calling. And, as they say, the rest is history!

By Lynda Dean-Duru, DDS Ashburn Children’s Dentistry
When it comes to your child’s dental development, early intervention can make a lifetime of difference. One of the most innovative tools used by airway-focused dentists and orthodontists is the ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functional) appliance – a gentle, growth-guidance appliance that helps the body achieve natural balance and healthy development.
ALF Appliance
The ALF is not an expander. Traditional expanders mechanically widen the palate, but the ALF works in harmony with the body’s own growth patterns. It is a growth-guidance appliance designed to facilitate natural development by gently assisting the tongue in moving the bones of the skull, allowing growth to occur the way nature intended.
The ALF acts almost like a “surrogate tongue,” allowing the brain to redirect resources for growth through functional swallowing, nasal breathing, and a nervous-system reset. Because it is so delicate and precise, the ALF requires meticulous training and expertise to use correctly – its effectiveness depends on the practitioner’s deep understanding of oral-facial development and the connection between posture, airway, and overall health.
The ALF philosophy views the mouth as part of the body’s larger postural and functional system. By supporting balanced growth, proper tongue position, and healthy airway development, this gentle form of growth guidance can positively influence a child’s overall well-being – from sleep and focus to confidence and comfort.
Children who breathe well, sleep well, and swallow properly often experience improvements not just in their dental health but in behavior, learning, and physical comfort as well.
Although orthodontic guidelines often suggest evaluation by age 7, many airway-focused providers em-
phasize that for certain growth and airway issues, that may already be too late.
Signs of improper jaw development can appear as early as infancy –even within the first few days of life. Babies and toddlers who show trouble latching, snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, difficulty eating solid foods, teeth grinding, frequent
ear infections, or speech issues may already be exhibiting early indicators that the jaws and airway are not developing correctly.
If you notice these signs, it’s important to consult a knowledgeable, airway-focused provider who can evaluate your child’s growth patterns and guide proper jaw and brain development. Early detection and pro-
active, collaborative intervention allow for gentler, holistic treatment and the best long-term outcomes.
Healthy Growth Creates Healthy Smiles – and Healthy Lives.
Ask your pediatric or airwayfocused dentist whether your child might benefit from early evaluation or growth-guidance therapy with the ALF approach.

child’s jaw and airway development may be the missing link.
airway-focused approach supports whole-body health and lifelong confidence. Let’s uncover what’s really going on – together.

Orthodontic treatments can be done in a single full-length treatment or broken into two separate treatment phases, with a resting period between the two.
Two-phase treatment is comprised of two separate times when a child receives orthodontic treatment. The first phase is done when a child is still growing and has most of their baby teeth. The second phase takes place when all of the permanent teeth have erupted.
The first phase of treatment is done around the age of 7-10 years. This is usually when all four of the permanent first molars and incisors have erupted. Children sometimes exhibit signs of jaw problems as they grow and develop. The goal of the
first phase is to take advantage of the early growth spurts. This will help develop the jaw growth to gain space for permanent teeth, and to relate the upper and lower jaws to each other.
The first phase of treatment may use growth modification devices such as an expander, habit appliances (to stop thumb or finger sucking) or functional appliances (to reduce overbite). Braces may or may not be used during this phase of treatment. Phase one usually lasts from 6-18 months. Early correction may prevent later removal of permanent teeth to correct crowding and/or surgical procedures to align the upper and lower jaws.
After phase one the patient enters the recall phase. During this phase 6-month recall appointments are scheduled for observation. Periodic x-rays may also be done to monitor growth and development.
Phase two of treatment most commonly occurs at the age of 11 or 12 years, but may vary depending on the child’s development. This phase
involves the placement of full braces on all the permanent teeth, which gives maximum control over tooth movement. The goal of phase two is to achieve ideal alignment and occlusion of all permanent teeth. Treatment time can range anywhere from 15-24 months.
Phase two helps to optimize treatment time when the child is
growing to obtain best possible results. It also could prevent the need for extractions and/or corrective jaw surgery in the future.
To check if your child will need this type of treatment contact your orthodontist to schedule a complimentary consultation. Orthodontic treatments can be done in a single
