Optical Insight

20/20 Vision In 2026

By Jacqueline D. Griffiths, MD New View Eye Center

Who started this whole New Year’s resolution idea anyway? The New Year’s celebration can be traced back to the ancient Babylonians over four thousand years ago. Back then, it took place in March to coincide with the spring planting season. 2026 is the year to see what you’ve been missing. A resolution is a goal, so plan to live in a progressive world without glasses or contact lenses. Laser vision correction is an outpatient procedure performed by an ophthalmologist that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. A VISX S4 laser is used to re-contour and shape the surface of the cornea, enabling the eye to focus without glasses or contact lenses. The excimer laser is controlled by a computer and used by an experienced, well-trained surgeon so precise changes can be made to the shape of the cornea while touching only a small area of corneal tissue. A preoperative evaluation can determine if you are a candidate for Lasik or PRK surgery. In general, candidates for Lasik or PRK should: • Be at least 18 years or older. • Have a stable prescription for one

year. • Be nearsighted (myopia) -0.75 up to -14.00 diopters or farsighted (hyperopia) up to +4.00 diopters. • Have astigmantism up to -4.00 diopters. • Have healthy eyes. 100 percent of Lasik and PRK patients have improved uncorrected or normal vision. The actual laser time is usually less than a minute and most patients are in and out of surgery in 15 minutes. The procedure itself is painless and patients are not put to sleep during the procedure. Very strong anesthetic eye drops are given about a half hour before the procedure and again immediately before the surgeon begins. Generally, most patients are quite comfortable within a very short time after Lasik and return to work the next day. Laser vision correction is very safe and with a low degree of risk. Like DNA, or a fingerprint, your vision is unique. Traditional Lasik treatments were based on diagnostic technology similar to that used for the prescription of eyeglasses or contact lenses. With the iDesign Advanced WaveScan Studio, individualized laser vision correction is now available. This diagnostic device maps the entire

optical path of the eye and provides precise and detailed information which the doctor calls your “fingerprint of vision.” The iDesign Advanced WaveScan Studio is combined with the Star S4 IR® excimer laser’s exclusive technology providing you with a very precise treatment: • Iris registration technology provides a noncontact, automated method to correctly align and center your treatment while allowing for instant re-registration in the event of intraoperative movement. • Variable repetition rate (VRR) delivers Fourier-reconstructed shapes with optimized ablation time while minimizing thermal impact on the cornea. • Variable spot scanning (VSS) technology incorporates an array of varying laser pulse diameters to ensure an accurate match between target and ablation shapes. • ActiveTrak 3-D™ active eye tracking technology follows the eye’s motions in three dimensions to capture more than 99.4% of eye movements. • ActiveTrak™ automatic centering technology locates and automatically sets the treatment center in relation to the pupil center.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable. Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access. Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to: Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should. Tongue-Tie, Swallowing Patterns, and Upper Jaw Development upper jaw may also reduce nasal airway space, potentially contributing to mouth breathing and sleep-disordered breathing. The effects of tongue-tie are often subtle and progressive. Children may present with crowded teeth, speech difficulties, messy eating, or prolonged thumb-sucking habits. In adolescents and adults, tongue-tie can contribute to orthodontic relapse, jaw tension,

headaches, or difficulty maintaining proper oral posture – even after braces. Early identification is key. A comprehensive evaluation by a dental professional trained to assess tongue function – not just tongue appearance – is essential. In many cases, treatment involves a team approach. A frenectomy (release of the tongue-tie) may be recommended, often combined with myofunctional therapy to retrain

proper swallowing and tongue posture. This combination supports healthier jaw development and more stable orthodontic outcomes. Understanding the relationship between tongue-tie, swallowing, and upper jaw growth allows patients and parents to address issues early – supporting not only better dental alignment, but improved breathing, function, and overall oral health.

By Ali Ghatri, DDS Let’s Smile Dental Tongue-tie, clinically known as ankyloglossia, is a condition in which the lingual frenulum – the band of tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth – is unusually short, thick, or tight. While tongue-tie is often discussed in relation to breastfeeding difficulties in infants, its impact extends well beyond early feeding. In children and adults, tongue-tie can significantly affect swallowing patterns, oral posture, and the proper development of the upper jaw. Normal oral development depends heavily on correct tongue function. At rest, the tongue should rest gently against the roof of the mouth (the palate). During a mature swallow, the tongue presses upward and backward against the palate while the lips remain relaxed and the teeth lightly together. This repeated, gentle pressure from the tongue plays a crucial role in shaping the upper jaw as a child grows. When a tongue-tie restricts tongue movement, the tongue often cannot elevate properly to the palate. As a result, individuals may develop an abnormal swallowing pattern, commonly called a tongue-thrust swallow. In this pattern, the tongue pushes forward or downward instead of upward. Over time, this altered muscle function can interfere with normal facial and dental development. One of the most significant consequences of restricted tongue movement is inadequate stimulation of the upper jaw. Without consistent tongue pressure against the palate, the maxilla (upper jaw) may fail to widen and develop fully. This can lead to a narrow palate, high palatal vault, dental crowding, and bite problems such as crossbites or open bites. A narrow www.yourhealthmagazine.net

Keep Kids’ Smiles Healthy During Cold and Flu Season

By April Toyer, DDS, FAAPD Elite Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics

When the sniffles start, brushing and flossing are often the last things on a parent’s mind. But cold and flu season can take a toll on your child’s oral health in surprising ways – and a few small habits can make a big

difference. Hydration Helps More Than You Think When children are sick, they often don’t drink enough water. Staying hydrated keeps the mouth moist and helps wash away bacteria that cause cavities and bad breath. Saliva is the mouth’s natural defense system – and dehydration

can quickly reduce it. Encourage your child to sip water frequently, even if it’s just small amounts throughout the day. Mouth Breathing and Dry Mouth Nasal congestion often forces children to breathe through their mouths, especially while sleeping. Mouth breathing dries out oral tis-

sues, allowing cavity-causing bacteria to thrive. If your child is congested, use a cool-mist humidifier in the bedroom, and remind them to drink water as soon as they wake up. Watch Out For Sugary Medications Many children’s cough syrups, throat lozenges, and liquid antibiotics contain sugar to make them taste better. These sticky medications can cling to teeth, feeding decay-causing bacteria. Whenever possible, ask your pharmacist for sugar-free alternatives. If that’s not an option, have your child rinse with water or brush after taking medicine – even in the middle of the night if doses are frequent. Getting All the Right Nutrients Being sick can mean eating less or missing key vitamins that help keep gums and enamel strong. Offer soft, nutrient-rich foods like soups, yogurt, smoothies, and fruits high in vitamin C to support recovery and oral health at the same time. Brushing When They Feel Miserable It’s normal for kids to skip brushing when they don’t feel well – but bacteria doesn’t take a sick day. Keep brushing and flossing routines as gentle as possible: use a soft toothbrush, a mild-flavor toothpaste, and warm water. For younger children, you can brush their teeth for them while they rest. Don’t Forget To Change the Toothbrush Once your child feels better, replace their toothbrush (or toothbrush head) right away. Germs can linger on the bristles and cause reinfection. It’s a simple, inexpensive step that helps ensure a full recovery. By keeping up with hydration, good nutrition, and regular brushing – even during sick days – parents can protect their child’s teeth and gums all season long. Healthy habits at home, combined with regular dental visits, keep those growing smiles strong year-round. 301-805-6805

Hair Loss?

Time To Grow New Hair

By Craig E. Vigliante, MD, DMD Virginia Hair Transplant, Lansdowne Hair loss can be a very emotional part of the natural aging process, and seeking ways to curb this process is a challenge. There are many products on the market that claim to re-grow hair, but the results are mixed. Some work for some people, and for others, not so well. Surgically transplanting hair has come a long way over the past decade - to the point where follicular unit grafting (FUG) is now more widely accepted. It’s not like the old-style plugs people used to get. These grafts are indistinguishable from your natural hair and are probably more durable than your natural hair in the long run. While your natural hair still present on the top and front of your scalp may continue to thin or fall out, the grafted hairs from the sides and back of your head are more likely to be there permanently. The latest procedure for hair transplantation is follicular unit extraction (FUE), where each hair is harvested and individually placed in a new location on your scalp. By doing this there are no scars to deal with, and the procedure is more tolerable and may even be a little safer. One of the first FUE devices to be cleared by the FDA for follicular unit harvesting and implantation is the NeoGraft® system, which delivers automation of the FUE technique, the most advanced technique in the hair transplant industry. This system uses pneumatic controls to precisely extract complete individual hair follicles, which can be immediately transplanted to the selected areas of the scalp. This automated hair transplantation system is the only complete harvesting system on the market and has the only “no touch” implantation technology. It provides exact harvesting and placement, delivering natural looking results. This advanced technology offers a discrete solution to hair loss, allowing patients to achieve natural looking results with no linear scarring, minimal downtime, and a shorter www.yourhealthmagazine.net

recovery period. Hair restoration with NeoGraft is unnoticeable, making it your secret to tell. How the Procedure Works: Step One: Donor Hair Removal The procedure begins with hair being removed from the donor area in the back of your head where your hair is genetically programmed to resist testosterone. Step Two: Separation of the

Follicular Units Each graft is extracted with the same consistency in diameter and length, resulting in a dramatically increased take rate. Step Three: Creation of the Recipient Sites The hair transplant surgeon creates recipient sites in the proper angle, direction and orientation according to the artistic hair transplant plan he or

she has designed specifically for you. Step Four: Placement of the Hair Graft The follicular units are then carefully separated by size. Grafts are transplanted into the balding and thinning areas of your scalp. Each graft is meticulously harvested as it naturally occurs and implanted individually to ensure the best results.

Need Hair Restoration?

YOU decide.

Virginia Hair Transplant is excited to announce our newest offering, NeoGraft®. NeoGraft® introduces the “state-of-the-art” solution for hair loss. This game changing technology automates the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method to give patients more natural looking results with minimal downtime, no linear scaring and no stitches. • It is the least invasive procedure for hair transplantation • Patients who receive NeoGraft® feel little to no discomfort • No stitches or staples are used in the NeoGraft® procedure • No unsightly linear scar • No numbness where the donor hair is harvested • Quick recovery time • Natural looking results • Less restrictions on your normal daily activities • Patients can typically go back to work the next day • Flexibility for any hair style of your choice, short or long

Keep Your Smile Bright

Orthodontic Care Tips For the Holiday Season

By Hani Thariani, DDS, MMSc TBraces This time of years is a time filled with joy, celebration, and plenty of delicious food. Between parties, travel, and festive treats, it’s easy to let your usual routines slide – but if you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment, a few mindful habits can make all the difference. Whether you wear braces or clear aligners, keeping your smile healthy during the holidays will help ensure your treatment stays on track and your teeth sparkle in every holiday photo. Mindful Eating During Festive Feasts Holiday meals often feature tempting foods that can pose challenges for orthodontic patients. Sticky caramels, hard nuts, crunchy candies, and chewy treats can damage braces or loosen wires. Even popcorn at a holiday movie night can cause problems if kernels get stuck between brackets. Instead, choose softer options that are brace-friendly and equally satisfying – like mashed potatoes, soft cheeses, steamed vegetables, turkey, and pumpkin pie. If you’re wearing clear aligners, remember to remove them while eating or drinking anything other than water and brush before putting them back in. A good rule to remember: if it’s crunchy, sticky, or hard enough to bend a fork, it’s probably best to avoid it until your treatment is complete. Stay Consistent With Oral Hygiene Between travel and busy holiday schedules, it’s easy to forget your brushing and flossing routine. But with braces or aligners, plaque and food particles can quickly build up around brackets or inside aligner trays, leading to cavities, discoloration, or bad breath. • Brush after every meal using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. • Floss daily with an orthodontic flosser or water flosser to clean between teeth and around wires. • Rinse with mouthwash to reduce bacteria and freshen your breath after holiday meals. If you’re traveling, pack a small www.yourhealthmagazine.net

dental kit with your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and orthodontic wax. Keeping up your routine will protect your investment and your smile. Handle Emergencies Quickly Accidents can happen – especially when enjoying festive foods. If a wire breaks or a bracket loosens, don’t panic. Use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp edges, and contact your orthodontist as soon as possible. Most offices can accommodate quick repairs during the holiday season,

and addressing small issues early prevents bigger setbacks later. Don’t Skip Appointments Amid holiday chaos, it might be tempting to postpone your orthodontic visits. However, these appointments are critical to keeping your treatment progressing smoothly. Whether it’s a wire adjustment or aligner check, staying on schedule ensures your teeth continue to move as planned and your results stay on track for the new year. A Season To Smile

Orthodontic treatment is an investment in your confidence and health – so this season, give your smile the care it deserves. By making smart food choices, maintaining consistent oral hygiene, and keeping up with your appointments, you can enjoy the holidays worry-free and look forward to a beautiful, healthy smile when the celebrations are over. To a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season

By Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS Sleep & TMJ Therapy

It is the time of year when we wish our friends and family all the best. We do, however, tend to overindulge and this can be a trying time for those people who want to improve their health and wellbeing.

An invitation to a buffet dinner can most certainly undermine your efforts to lose weight and improve your health. You can still stay healthy by paying attention to your surroundings and by being aware of what is put in front of you. For the person suffering from TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder)

it’s even more difficult to stick to the required dietary plan of soft foods. It is really critical that you do not eat things that could put undue pressure on those damaged or displaced discs. Although you are eating the soft cookies, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes, they really are not going to keep you in good shape. The diet plan

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!” - D. Thomas “My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.” - Susan

we provide at our office is the ideal way to go. The recipe book is chock full of foods that provide good nutrition while protecting the joints from over exertion. Another aspect of staying healthy during the holidays is to make sure you exercise. Sure, the holidays mean it’s time to take a break, relax, eat, and enjoy! But, for so many people who suffer with TMD, exercise is an essential part of maintaining their health and wellbeing. All you need to do is get out there and walk at least once a day. Getting fresh air and moving around is what our bodies are designed to do, so just do it! This walk also helps those patients who are trying to get their sleep cycles back on track. Getting sun exposure helps your circadian rhythm. A BIG must for sleep issues. Lest we forget, being healthy also means keeping hydrated during the holidays. This means that whatever your body weight is in pounds, you need half that amount in ounces to determine your daily water intake. Water is ideally a good choice but milk and milk alternatives, fruit and herbed infused water, or sports drinks are also hydrating. Hydration is a key component to avoiding symptom flare-ups of TMJ, your joints and muscles to function and avoid inflammation and pain. For sleep issues, extreme fatigue or just plain discomfort makes it harder to sleep. Remember, sleeping in itself is dehydrating. Best of all and the easiest, a smile. Did you know that a smile really does make you happier? That’s right, if you can put on a smile and really mean it, this stimulates the endorphins in your body to help you feel better. Better yet, you are also making someone else feel good. Maybe this is why the holidays help us. Family and friends and having some fun with all positive emotions. From all of us at Sleep and TMJ Therapy, to all our friends, families, and patients out there, we wish you a Safe, Happy, Healthy Holiday Season! 301-805-6805

Expanding Smiles Naturally

Guiding Growth With the ALF Approach By Lynda Dean-Duru, DDS Ashburn Children’s Dentistry When it comes to your child’s dental development, early intervention can make a lifetime of difference. One of the most innovative tools used by airway-focused dentists and orthodontists is the ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functional) appliance – a gentle, growth-guidance appliance that helps the body achieve natural balance and healthy development. What the ALF Appliance Does – And What It Isn’t The ALF is not an expander. Traditional expanders mechanically widen the palate, but the ALF works in harmony with the body’s own growth patterns. It is a growth-guidance appliance designed to facilitate natural development by gently assisting the tongue in moving the bones of the skull, allowing growth to occur the way nature intended. The ALF acts almost like a “surrogate tongue,” allowing the brain to redirect resources for growth through functional swallowing, nasal breathing, and a nervous-system reset. Because it is so delicate and precise, the ALF requires meticulous training and expertise to use correctly – its effectiveness depends on the practitioner’s deep understanding of oral-facial development and the connection between posture, airway, and overall health. A Whole-Body Approach To Dental Health The ALF philosophy views the mouth as part of the body’s larger postural and functional system. By supporting balanced growth, proper tongue position, and healthy airway development, this gentle form of growth guidance can positively influence a child’s overall well-being – from sleep and focus to confidence and comfort. Children who breathe well, sleep well, and swallow properly often experience improvements not just in their dental health but in behavior, learning, and physical comfort as well. Early Evaluation Is Key Although orthodontic guidelines often suggest evaluation by age 7, many airway-focused providers emwww.yourhealthmagazine.net

phasize that for certain growth and airway issues, that may already be too late. Signs of improper jaw development can appear as early as infancy – even within the first few days of life. Babies and toddlers who show trouble latching, snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, difficulty eating solid foods, teeth grinding, frequent

ear infections, or speech issues may already be exhibiting early indicators that the jaws and airway are not developing correctly. If you notice these signs, it’s important to consult a knowledgeable, airway-focused provider who can evaluate your child’s growth patterns and guide proper jaw and brain development. Early detection and proac-

tive, collaborative intervention allow for gentler, holistic treatment and the best long-term outcomes. Healthy Growth Creates Healthy Smiles – and Healthy Lives. Ask your pediatric or airwayfocused dentist whether your child might benefit from early evaluation or growth-guidance therapy with the ALF approach.

Struggling With Focus or Behavior at School? Your child’s jaw and airway development may be the missing link.

We Help Children Sleep Better, Breathe Better, and Thrive. At Ashburn Children’s Dentistry and Womb2Grow Wellness, we specialize in identifying the hidden cause of poor sleep, behavioral struggles, and jaw underdevelopment. Our airway-focused approach supports whole-body health and lifelong confidence. Let’s uncover what’s really going on – together.

Whiten Your Child’s Teeth Naturally By April Toyer, DDS, FAAPD Lifetime Dental Care Permanent teeth have a naturally more yellow hue than their baby predecessors. Tooth whitening is generally not recommended for children until their adult teeth are fully erupted. At about the age of 14, the nerve tissue in a child’s permanent teeth has finally

developed and bleaching is safer at this time. Bleaching too early can lead to tooth sensitivity and is often contraindicated due to concerns with cavity control and hygiene concerns. In some circumstances bleaching in children may be permitted with

April Toyer, DDS, FAAPD low carbamide peroxide concentrations and only under a dentist’s care. Although bleaching may not be in the cards for your child check out these natural tips and tricks to keep that smile looking bright. Avoid dark foods and drinks. The first few weeks after your whitening procedure your teeth are more susceptible to picking up stain. Anything that can stain your shirt can also stain your teeth. Red wine, teas, dark sodas, dark juices and cigarettes can all seep into the newly opened tubules of your teeth and cause them to discolor rapidly. Eat teeth cleansing foods. Teeth can be naturally cleansed by foods that are firm and crisp such as apples, carrots and celery. When you cannot get to a toothbrush this is a great alternative Don’t forget to rinse. Water is nature’s great neutralizer. After consuming dark substances rinse with water to cleanse your mouth of dyes and other food debris. Eat more strawberries. The malic acid contained in strawberries has natural properties that contribute to tooth whitening. Gargle with apple cider vinegar. This can be done before brushing. Vinegar is a natural cleansing agent that can help remove stains, kill bacteria and also whiten your teeth. Brush with baking soda. In addition to normal brushing, using baking soda once a week can help keep your teeth sparkling. The abrasives in baking soda can help remove surface stain and maintain your pretty white smile. Make sure you do not swallow the baking soda or brush too harshly. Attend regular check-ups. Sometimes the plaque or build up on your teeth can harden and form tarter. Additional debris on your teeth can be magnets for stain. Discoloration can often be signs of injury, decay or an altered internal make of the tooth structure. Make sure that you attend your check up every six months to remove excess build up and evaluate your whitening success. 301-805-6805

Holistic Approaches To Women’s Health

By Sushma Hirani, MD Rose Wellness Holistic care looks at the whole person—body, mind, and environment—rather than isolated symptoms. For many women, this approach is especially useful because hormonal shifts, stress, sleep, nutrition, gut health, and inflammation often interact in ways that standard symptom-bysymptom care can miss. Here’s how a thoughtful, evidence-informed holistic plan typically comes together. Start with a root-cause lens. Instead of asking only “What will relieve this symptom?”, holistic care asks “Why is this happening now?” Common contributors include nutrient gaps, chronic stress and high cortisol, insulin resistance, thyroid dysfunction, perimenopause/menopause transitions, gut dysbiosis, low-grade inflammation, and environmental triggers (e.g., allergens, irritants, or poor sleep hygiene). Clarifying root factors helps you target changes that last. Use testing judiciously. Labs can be helpful when they change decisions or track progress. Depending on your history, a clinician may consider: • Metabolic markers (fasting glucose/insulin, lipids, A1C) • Thyroid panel (TSH, free T4/T3; sometimes antibodies) • Iron studies and B-vitamins if fatigue is prominent • Inflammatory markers (e.g., hs-CRP) • Selective evaluation for food intolerances or celiac disease when warranted Testing should complement— not replace—clinical history, physical exam, and lifestyle assessment. Prioritize lifestyle and nutrition. Foundational habits move the needle more than any single supplement. Center meals on protein, colorful produce, fiber, and healthy fats; limit ultra-processed foods and added sugars to improve energy, weight regulation, and hormonal balance. Aim for 7–9 hours of consistent sleep, regular physical activity that www.yourhealthmagazine.net

blends aerobic work with strength training, and daily stress-recovery practices (breathwork, walking outside, journaling, or mindfulness). Small, repeatable steps beat drastic overhauls. Support hormone and gut balance. The gut and liver help process estrogens; fiber-rich foods (beans, vegetables, whole grains) and adequate hydration support healthy elimination. Strength training and a protein-forward diet help with midlife muscle maintenance and insulin sensitivity, which can reduce hot flashes and weight gain. For menstrual concerns, tracking cycles alongside mood, sleep, and nutrition often reveals patterns you can modify.

Be supplement-savvy. Supplements can fill gaps but should be targeted, safe, and time-limited. Common considerations include vitamin D (if low), magnesium glycinate for sleep or muscle tension, omega-3s for triglycerides and inflammation, and iron only when deficiency is confirmed. Quality, dose, drug–nutrient interactions, and your specific labs matter; more is not better. Mind–body care is medical care. Stress chemistry affects blood sugar, thyroid conversion, gut motility, and sleep. Brief, daily practices (10 minutes of diaphragmatic breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or a quiet walk) mea-

surably shift the nervous system and can improve pain, digestion, and mood. Build a personalized plan. Bring a clear health timeline, medication/supplement list, and your top three goals to appointments. Ask which lifestyle steps to start first, which labs are most useful, how progress will be measured, and when to follow up. Holistic women’s health is not about chasing every test or pill – it’s about aligning daily habits, targeted therapies, and thoughtful monitoring so you feel and stay well over time. Women’s Health After 60

Growing Smiles and Healthy Breathing

Staying Strong, Balanced, and Well

By Dr. David L. Johnson, Owner Home Helpers For women, reaching 60 and beyond brings new opportunities to focus on health, strength, and self-care. The years after menopause are a time of transition – physically, emotionally, and hormonally. With the right attention and support, women can continue to thrive, stay independent, and enjoy

a vibrant quality of life well into their later years. Protecting Bone and Joint Health As estrogen levels decrease after menopause, bone density tends to decline, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Gentle weightbearing exercises such as walking, yoga, or light strength training can help maintain bone strength and flexibility. A balanced diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and protein supports bone and muscle health. Caregivers can assist by helping with safe exercise routines and preparing nutritious meals that promote mobility and strength. By Michael Rogers, DDS Fairlington Dental Why Pediatric Dental Care Looks Beyond Teeth A child’s smile tells a bigger story than most people realize. Pediatric dental care is not only about preventing cavities or keeping teeth straight. It plays an important role in how a child’s mouth, jaw, and airway develop over time. When dental care begins early, it helps support proper growth, healthy breathing, and long term wellbeing. Children’s dentistry focuses on development, not just maintenance. Each

stage of growth influences how teeth erupt, how the jaws form, and how well a child breathes, especially during sleep. Addressing these factors early allows dental care to support both oral health and overall health for years to come. Why Baby Teeth and Jaw Development Matter Baby teeth guide jaw growth and preserve space for permanent teeth, but their role extends further. The position of the teeth and the shape of the dental arches influence tongue posture and airway space. When baby teeth are lost too early or crowding develops, jaw growth can be altered, which may affect breathing as a child grows. Routine dental visits allow providers to monitor spacing, eruption patterns, and jaw development. Identifying concerns early gives families more options and can often prevent more complex issues later in life. The Connection Between Dental Growth and Airway Health Pediatric airway health is closely Please see “Growing Smiles,” page 38

Optimum Health Begins With Oral Health At Fairlington Dental, we understand the connection between a healthy smile and a healthy body. As a result, we look at the whole person to discover the reasons a patient may have gum disease or a bad bite. A number of studies link heart disease and other serious conditions to the presence of periodontal (gum) disease. This research makes it vital that we take a Complete Health approach to your dental care. Dr. Rogers will listen to you, conduct a careful assessment, and carefully explain your proposed customized wellness plan. He will then take the time to answer all of your questions. You become a partner in your oral health goals! Our team has mastered the techniques of gentle dentistry and is skilled at helping patients with any level of apprehension relax and grow comfortable with visiting the dentist. Anxiety and tension have a variety of sources, so it’s important for us to listen to your concerns as well as your goals and history. Then we address your anxieties and proceed with gentle treatment only when you’re ready. We deliver all of this in an office that is environmentally aware, while you enjoy a variety of spa-like amenities during your visit. Avoid Failed Dental Implants

By E. Richard Hughes, DDS Dental implants are usually very successful, and people that have them are happy they went through the process. However, there are a small number of people that are not so happy due to implant failure. So what are some of the things that make dental implants fail? Excessive bite force, infection and smoking are three that your dentist can address.

Dental implants are usually very successful, and people that have them are happy they went through the process. There are some issues that the patient and their physician have to address and discuss with the implant dentist. Some people are taking medications on a long term basis that may have an adverse effect on bone which directly affects the success of the dental implants. Some of the medications are, warfarin, heparin, cyclosporine, corticosteroids, thyroid hormone synthetic retinoids (vitamin A), loop diuretics, aromatase inhibitors, methotrexate, antiepileptics, proton pump inhibitors (Nexium and others), antidepressants, antiparkinsons, narcotic pain killers, antiretrovirals, bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Boniva etc.), imatinib (Gleevac), ifosfamide, and thiazolidinediones (Avandia). By virtue of the fact that people have certain conditions (cancers and www.yourhealthmagazine.net

leukemia) and are taking the related medication, may exclude them from dental implant treatment. There are other things to consider that adversely affect bone such as low vitamin D-2 and D-3, high LDL cholesterol and the malabsorption syndrome caused by gastric bypass surgery. This article is not suggesting that people go off their medications, but the physician, patient and implant dentist have to communicate and be in agreement after talking about that subject.

Krystle Dean-Duru, DDS

Dr. Griffiths is one of this area's most experienced surgeons and offers state-of-the-art Laser Vision Correction, Cataract Removal, Multifocal Lens Implants, and Comprehensive Ophthalmology. She has helped thousands of patients who struggle with their vision. Her knowledge, compassion, and attention to detail are the reasons she was voted by her peers to be one of this area’s most elite physicians.

Family dentistry has been a way of life for me, and the passion for caring for children is in my genes. My mother, Dr. Lynda Dean-Duru, also a pediatric dentist, was my first inspiration towards family dentistry. Having started my journey in family care working as a pediatric dental assistant at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I spent many summers as my mother’s mentee. Watching what seemed like magical healing art she deployed while treating her patients and knowing the need and the power of proactive preventive dental health for children, I chose a career specializing in pediatric dentistry. It is an honor to join my mother in practice at Ashburn Children’s Dentistry where I get to fulfill my commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive and transformative dental experience, with compassion and fun! Having matured as an integrative laser pediatric dental surgeon and absorbing the ethos of Ashburn Children’s Dentistry, I work tirelessly to stay abreast of emerging research, and improve the quality of life for children by learning from the world’s leading researchers and clinicians. Through these means, we are continually integrating critical aspects of oral structure, craniofacial development, and its impact on the pediatric airway in the service of providing optimal patient outcomes. Caring for children is so powerful and rewarding and with that, understanding the importance of utilizing gentle and minimal intervention therapies. Treating the source of their issues—instead of the symptoms—and focusing on early prevention, has been critical to my role in educating parents and assisting their blossoming child’s development into a healthy and resilient adult. I hold an undergraduate degree from Columbia University in New York, where I studied Psychology. I received a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and completed my Pediatric Residency at Interfaith Department of Dental Medicine in Brooklyn, NY, where I served in a leadership role as Chief Resident. Board Certified by the ABPD, I am a proud Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. When not helping my young patients build happy smiles, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, growing in my faith, improving my dancing skills, learning boxing moves, traveling — and cheering on Washington sports teams! “Dr. Krystle,” as she is known by her patients, is thrilled to join her mom, Dr. Lynda, in practice. Patients and parents compliment her fun, compassionate approach. They are also impressed by her commitment to helping each child and parent have a positive dental experience. Having matured as a dental surgeon, she is constantly working to enhance her capabilities in the field.

Physical Therapy Your Way: Advanced Specialty Care Mary Nalls PT, MPT is the CEO of Physical Therapy Your Way & Advanced Specialty Care PLLC with locations in Alexandria and Lorton, VA. . She earned her Master of Physical Therapy degree at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, PA. Mary specialized in pelvic floor physical therapy since 1991 and brought this new niche to Northern VA. In 1994, she created Fairfax Hospital’s first women’s health pelvic floor physical therapy program. Before entering private practice, the jobs Mary was employed by required high patient volume productivity standards. This patient care model frustrated her; hence in 2002, she opened her own private practice and since then her entire staff exclusively provides full-hour one on one personalized physical therapy. Mary is the co-author of the American Physical Therapy Associations Women’s Health Manual. In 1992 a group of pioneering women’s health physical therapists collaborated and wrote the manual to guide other therapists on the standards of proper evaluation and treatment techniques for pelvic floor disorders. She and her staff of 10 other pelvic floor therapists currently treat bladder, bowel, and pain conditions of women, men and children. Pelvic floor disorders include urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic and spine pain, dyspareunia (painful intercourse), pelvic organ prolapse, constipation, prenatal and postpartum rehabilitation, diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation), bedwetting, urinary frequency, and prostatitis. In addition to specific pelvic floor rehabilitation, Mary utilizes a holistic approach to her treatments. She focuses on full-body movement analysis, corrective exercise prescriptions, nutrition, mindfulness training, stress management strategies, and helping everyone find a functional and pain-free way to live an active and healthy lifestyle.

After obtaining her DDS degree Dr. Alexander spent one year at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital, in general practice residency focusing her training in the area of anxiety patient management. She then attended Harvard University and earned her clinical specialty in periodontics and a doctorate in medical science. Her doctoral research was focused in the study of bone function and metabolic disease of the bone.

Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS

Dr. Tiffany Daniel, EdD

Dr. Jeffrey Brown grew up in the state of Maine and went to Bowdoin College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1982. He accepted early decision into the Georgetown School of Dentistry, and graduated from there in 1986. While at Georgetown, Dr. Brown worked in the Neurology Department as an assistant on a project that involved studying the regeneration of nerve tissue in the spinal column after major trauma. Upon graduation from Georgetown Dental School, Dr. Brown worked for a short time as an associate in a practice in Falls Church, VA. From there, he moved on and built his own practice in the Fairlington neighborhood in Arlington, VA, creating one of the largest practices ever seen on the East Coast. Dr. Brown took a short sabbatical to help raise his four young children and to continue his education. It was then that he began the process of understanding sleep apnea and how it correlates to TMJ treatment. His knowledge in the combined fields of TMJ, sleep and orthodontics has given him a perspective unlike most other practitioners who perform basic dentistry. In addition, Dr. Brown has also learned the advanced techniques involved in expanding an airway so that both children and adults can breathe better. His training continued over time at the famous Sleep Medicine Center near the Emory University Hospital. He is a certified Fellow of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, awarded the Level of Legacy with the ALF Interface Academy and holds memberships with many academies. In 2013, Dr. Brown met Dr. Brendan Stack and was immediately impressed with the success Dr. Stack had in treating TMJ cases and being able to repair so many damaged lives. For Dr. Brown, helping people by dealing with their debilitating TMJ issues became his second calling. And, as they say, the rest is history!

Straighter Teeth With Invisalign

By Swathi Reddy, DMD All Smiles Orthodontics

We live in a society that places great emphasis on first impressions. A smile filled with beautifully aligned teeth will make a better impression than one that has crooked teeth. Recently, a lot of people have used Invisalign as a means to achieve this goal. Invisalign is manufactured and marketed by Align Technology, Inc, which was founded in 1997 and received FDA clearance in 1998. Since then, this technology has been widely used as an alternative to traditional

braces. Usually the treatment is covered by insurance the same way as traditional orthodontic treatment. The treatment consists of a series of clear, removable aligners or trays. These aligners need to be worn 20-22 hours per day. The success of Invisalign treatment is largely dependent on patient commitment. Like braces, these aligners put gentle pressure on the teeth to move them into a new position. Each set is worn for 2-4 weeks before proceeding to the next set. Besides the obvious cosmetic advantage, they are more comfortable than traditional braces and there are no wires or metal to rub against your cheeks. While eating, trays can be removed and you need not worry about food being stuck between the front teeth. These trays can also be removed for brushing, flossing and special occasions. To get started, you must first contact an orthodontist or dentist who is a certified Invisalign provider. Upon evaluation, if you are a good candidate, impressions of your teeth are made and sent to Align Technology.

A 3-D graphic representation of the doctor’s treatment plan (Clin-Check) is created from these impressions. This allows you to see up front the series of movements your teeth will go through over the course of treatment. After the orthodontist reviews the treatment plan, a series of custom-made aligners are produced that corresponds to your Clin-Check. Invisalign may not be the option for everyone. The first step is to contact an orthodontist/dentist who is certified in Invisalign so you can have the beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.

Considering Neck Lift Surgery?

Reduce Signs of Aging and Treat Sagging Skin! A neck lift can be performed for men and women of varying ages who are often frustrated by changes of the appearance of their neck and jawline. Depending on your age, a neck lift can be a short one-hour procedure to remove fat or a 3-hour procedure to remove fat, visible neck bands, and excess skin.

Neck Lift Surgery Can: Remove Excess Skin (Cervicoplasty) • Liposuction to Remove Excess Fat Remove or Alter Neck Muscles (Platysmaplasty) Liposuction can be performed alone or with surgical removal of the fat under the chin through a small incision under the chin. In patients with vertical bands in the neck, a platysmaplasty can be performed to reduce the appearance of the bands. Sometimes a chin implant is recommended to improve the overall contour and help with excess skin.

mended that your dentures be evaluated if you’ve worn them for longer than six years. New dentures should be made and fitted every six to ten years and relined every three to five years. Bleaching is a common first step to achieving a more youthful looking smile. The treatment brightens your teeth and significantly improves their appearance.

and cholesterol levels is essential. Seniors benefit from diets focused on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins, along with staying physically active. Avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol also help protect the heart. A caregiver’s encouragement and companionship can make it easier to keep up with healthy routines and regular doctor visits. Emotional and Cognitive Wellness Many older women experience emotional changes due to retirement, loss, or isolation. Staying socially connected is one of the best ways to support mental well-being. Regular conversation, hobbies, and light activities can help prevent loneliness and keep the mind sharp. Caregivers play a vital role in encouraging engagement and helping women remain connected to friends, family, and community life.

linked to oral development. Narrow arches, improper tongue posture, and underdeveloped jaws can restrict the airway. In children, this may appear as mouth breathing, snoring, restless sleep, difficulty focusing, or daytime fatigue. Dentists trained to recognize airway related patterns look beyond teeth alone. By observing how a child breathes, swallows, and positions their tongue at rest, providers gain insight into overall growth and function, not just oral health. Prevention That Supports Teeth and Breathing Preventive pediatric dental care includes more than cleanings and cavity prevention. It also involves monitoring habits that influence jaw and airway development. Thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use, and chronic mouth breathing can all affect growth if left unaddressed. Preventive visits allow families to address these habits early, when gentle guidance is most effective. Preventive treatments and sealants remain essential, but they are part of a broader approach focused on healthy development. Monitoring Growth Over Time

The improvements to your tooth enamel will be noticeable following a bleaching procedure. If you choose, porcelain veneers can completely transform the color, shape, and appearance of your teeth. The first step is to make an appointment and discuss the options that are now available. Why wait?

Preventive Screenings Still Matter Even after menopause, routine health screenings remain important. Regular mammograms, bone density tests, blood pressure checks, and colon cancer screenings can detect issues early when treatment is most effective. Having a caregiver assist with appointment scheduling and transportation can ensure these critical checkups aren’t missed. Whole-Body Wellness At Home Aging well means nurturing both body and spirit. With thoughtful support from family and professional caregivers, women can maintain healthy habits, manage medical needs, and continue doing the things they love. The goal is not just to live longer – but to live stronger, more balanced, and well.

As children grow, their bite and facial structure naturally change. Crowding, crossbites, and jaw imbalances can influence both alignment and airway space. Early monitoring helps providers identify patterns that may benefit from growth guidance rather than waiting until problems become more severe. Early support can encourage healthier jaw development, potentially reducing the need for extensive orthodontic treatment later while also promoting better breathing and sleep during critical developmental years. A Broader View Of Pediatric Dental Health Modern pediatric dentistry recognizes that healthy smiles depend on balanced growth, proper function, and clear airways. By looking beyond teeth alone, dental care can support healthier outcomes far beyond the mouth. Pediatric care should be approached with this broader perspective in mind. By focusing on growth, function, and prevention, the team helps children build a strong foundation for lifelong oral health, healthier breathing, and confident smiles as they grow. 301-805-6805

Why Your Health Is a Career Asset

Submitted by ScholarsHub.net

When people think about career success, they often focus on education, experience, and technical skills. While these are important, one critical factor is frequently overlooked: health. For students, job seekers, and working professionals, health is not a personal issue separate from career goals—it is a foundational asset that directly affects performance, learning, and long-term success. Health and Cognitive Performance

www.yourhealthmagazine.net

Physical and mental health play a major role in how well the brain functions. Adequate sleep, proper nutrition, and regular physical activity support concentration, memory, and decision-making. Chronic fatigue, unmanaged stress, and untreated health conditions can impair focus, slow learning, and reduce problem-solving ability. For students and employees alike, this can translate into lower productivity, missed opportunities, and difficulty keeping up with academic or workplace demands. Consistency and

Reliability Matter Employers value reliability. Frequent illness, burnout, or untreated conditions can lead to absenteeism, presenteeism (being at work but not fully functioning), and inconsistent performance. Preventive care—such as routine checkups, screenings, and addressing issues early—helps reduce disruptions that can derail academic progress or career momentum. Maintaining health supports the ability to show up consistently and perform at a high level. Stress, Burnout, and Career Sustainability High stress levels are common in both educational and professional environments. While short-term stress can be motivating, chronic stress increases the risk of burnout, anxiety, and physical illness. Burnout doesn’t just affect well-being— it can stall career growth, limit learning capacity, and lead to disengagement or job changes driven by exhaustion rather than opportunity. Developing stress-management skills and prioritizing mental health contribute to career resilience and

longevity. Health Literacy As a Professional Skill Understanding basic health information—such as interpreting symptoms, knowing when to seek care, and navigating healthcare benefits—is an often-overlooked professional skill. Health-literate individuals are better equipped to make informed decisions, advocate for themselves, and minimize longterm health-related disruptions to their education or career path. The Long-Term Advantage Careers are not short-term sprints; they are long-term investments. Prioritizing health early supports sustained energy, adaptability, and growth over time. Rather than viewing health as something to address “later,” recognizing it as a career asset allows students and professionals to protect their most valuable resource: their ability to learn, perform, and thrive. In a competitive job market, skills and experience matter—but health is what allows those assets to be used to their full potential.
