Burke Dental
For individuals who have lost several teeth due to injury, decay, or disease, multiple dental implants offer a long-lasting and effective solution to restore both function and aesthetics. Unlike traditional dentures or bridges,
Smile Confidently With Multiple Dental Implants
dental implants are designed to mimic the structure of natural teeth, providing stability, comfort, and a natural look.
What Are
Multiple Dental Implants?
Multiple dental implants involve placing two or more titanium posts directly into the jawbone to serve as artificial tooth roots. These implants support custom-made crowns, bridges, or even full arches of replacement teeth. Over time, the implants fuse
with the jawbone through a process called osseointegration, creating a strong and permanent foundation.
Benefits Of Multiple Dental Implants
Dental implants offer numerous advantages over other tooth replacement options:
• Stability & Strength: Implants provide a secure base for chewing and speaking without the slipping or discomfort of removable dentures.
Stronger Teeth, Healthier You
• Bone Preservation: Implants stimulate the jawbone and help prevent bone loss, which can occur when teeth are missing.
• Natural Appearance: Custom restorations blend seamlessly with existing teeth, restoring a beautiful and confident smile.
• Durability: With proper care, implants can last decades — often a lifetime.
• I mproved Oral Health: Unlike bridges, implants don’t require grinding down adjacent teeth, preserving more of your natural tooth structure.
Am I a Candidate For Multiple Dental Implants?
Most healthy adults with sufficient jawbone density and good oral hygiene are candidates for implants. Smokers, individuals with uncontrolled chronic diseases, or those with significant bone loss may require additional treatments or evaluation. A consultation with a qualified implant dentist will determine the best approach for your specific needs.

• Implant Placement: Titanium posts are surgically inserted into the jawbone.
• Healing Period: A few months are required for the bone to integrate with the implants.
• Final Restoration: Custom crowns or bridges are attached to the implants for a complete and natural smile.
A Permanent Investment
In Your Oral Health
Multiple dental implants can dramatically improve quality of life by restoring chewing function, facial structure, and self-confidence. If you’re missing multiple teeth, talk to your dentist about whether implants are the right solution for you.
Eye Allergies
By Jacqueline D. Griffiths, MD New View Eye Center
Eye allergies, called allergic conjunctivitis, are a common condition that occurs when the eyes react to something that irritates them (called an allergen). The eyes produce a substance called histamine to fight off the allergen. As a result, the eyelids and conjunctiva — the thin, filmy membrane that covers the inside of your eyelids and the white part of your eye (sclera) — become red, swollen and itchy, with tearing and burning. Unlike bacterial or viral conjunctivitis, allergic conjunctivitis is not spread from person to person.
The most common eye allergy symptoms include:
• Red, swollen or itchy eyes
• Burning or tearing of the eyes
• Sensitivity to light
People who suffer from eye allergies usually (though not always) have nasal allergies as well, with an itchy, stuffy nose and sneezing. It is usually a temporary (acute) condition associated with seasonal allergies. However, in other cases, eye allergies can develop from exposure to other environmental triggers, such as pet dander, dust, smoke, perfumes, or even foods. If the exposure is ongoing, the allergies can be more severe, with significant burning and itching and even sensitivity to light.
Many eye allergies are caused by the body’s response to allergens in the air — both indoors and out — such as dust, pet dander, mold, or smoke. Some of the most common airborne allergens include pollen from grass, trees and ragweed, contributing to seasonal allergies.
Some people can inherit eye allergies from their parents. You’re more likely to have allergies if both of your parents have them than if only one does.
To provide proper treatment, your ophthalmologist will check to see whether your symptoms are related to an eye infection or allergic conjunctivitis. He or she can usually diagnose allergic conjunctivitis easily by examining your eyes and discussing your medical history — including your history and your family’s history
of allergies.
The key to treating eye allergies is to avoid or limit contact with the substance causing the problem. But you have to know what to avoid. If necessary, an allergist can perform a skin or blood test to help identify the specific allergen(s). Those most common are:
• Pollen
• Mold
• Dust
• Pets
There are various forms of treatment for eye allergies including eyedrops and medicines:
• Artificial tears
• Decongestants (with or without antihistamines)
• Oral antihistamines
• Antihistamine/mast-cell stabilizers
• Corticosteroids
• Immunotherapy shots
Your doctor can help determine which treatments are best for you.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.
People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.
Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.
Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:
Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.
There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

Women’s Health and Dentistry Why Oral Health Matters At Every Stage Of Life
also increase the likelihood of cavities, since saliva plays an important role in protecting teeth from harmful bacteria.
Menopause can also affect bone density, including the jawbone that supports teeth. This makes maintaining strong oral hygiene and routine dental care even more important.
The Mouth–Body Connection
Women experience unique hormonal changes throughout their lives, and these changes can significantly impact oral health. From puberty and pregnancy to menopause and beyond, shifts in hormone levels can affect the gums, teeth, and even the risk of certain oral conditions. Understanding the connection between women’s health and dentistry is essential for maintaining both a healthy smile and overall well-being.
Hormones and Oral Health
Hormonal fluctuations influence how the body responds to plaque and bacteria in the mouth. As estrogen and progesterone levels change, the gums may become more sensitive, inflamed, or prone to bleeding. For many women, these changes occur during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause.
During puberty, increased hormone levels can lead to puberty gingivitis, a condition that causes swollen, red, or bleeding gums. While this condition is often temporary, good oral hygiene and regular dental visits are essential to prevent long-term gum problems.
Pregnancy and Dental Health
Pregnancy brings significant hormonal changes that can affect the gums and teeth. Many women develop pregnancy gingivitis, characterized by tender, swollen gums that may bleed easily. In some cases, pregnant women may also develop small growths on the gums called pregnancy tumors, which are benign but may require dental monitoring.
Research has also shown a link between periodontal (gum) disease and pregnancy complications, including low birth weight and premature birth. Because of this, dentists strongly recommend maintaining regular dental care during pregnancy. Routine cleanings, proper brushing and flossing, and good nutrition can help protect both mother and baby.
Menopause and Oral Changes
As women enter menopause, declining estrogen levels can affect oral tissues. Some women experience dry mouth, burning mouth syndrome, altered taste, or increased risk of gum disease. Reduced saliva production can
Oral health is closely connected to overall health, particularly for women who may be managing other conditions
such as osteoporosis, heart disease, or diabetes. Gum disease has been associated with systemic inflammation, which may contribute to broader health concerns.
Regular dental exams allow dentists to detect early signs of oral health problems and sometimes even identify symptoms related to other medical conditions.
Protecting Your Smile Through Every Stage of Life
Women can support lifelong oral
health by adopting simple preventive habits:
• Brush twice daily
• Floss every day
• Schedule regular dental cleanings
• Maintain a balanced diet
• Inform your dentist about medications, pregnancy, or hormonal changes By paying attention to oral health throughout life, women can protect not only their smiles but also their overall health.

CO2 Fractional Laser Skin Rejuvenation A Modern Approach To Radiant Skin
By Craig E. Vigliante, MD VASA Cosmetic Surgery
In today’s world of advanced aesthetics, CO2 fractional laser skin rejuvenation has emerged as one of the most effective treatments for improving skin texture, tone, and overall appearance. Designed to address a wide range of concerns – from fine lines and wrinkles to acne scars and sun damage – this innovative procedure
offers dramatic results with controlled downtime.
CO2 fractional laser technology works by delivering precise beams of light energy into the skin, creating microscopic channels known as “microthermal zones.” These tiny, controlled injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing response, boosting collagen production and encouraging the growth of fresh, healthy skin cells. Because the laser treats only a fraction
of the skin at a time, the surrounding tissue remains intact, promoting faster healing compared to traditional fully ablative lasers.
One of the key benefits of CO2 fractional laser treatment is its versatility. It can effectively target a variety of skin concerns, including uneven pigmentation, enlarged pores, rough texture, and deeper wrinkles. It is also widely used to improve the appearance of surgical scars and acne
scarring, making it a valuable option for individuals seeking smoother, more even skin.
Ready for smoother, brighter, more youthfullooking skin – without surgery? At VASA Cosmetic, our advanced laser skin resurfacing treatments are designed to give your skin a true reset.
Using precise, medically guided laser technology, we gently remove damaged outer layers while stimulating collagen deep within the skin. The result? A smoother texture, more even tone, and a naturally radiant glow.
WHAT CAN IT TREAT?

The procedure itself is typically performed in a clinical setting and may take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the treatment area. A topical anesthetic is usually applied beforehand to ensure patient comfort. During the session, patients may feel a warming or tingling sensation as the laser is applied.
Recovery time varies based on the intensity of the treatment. Mild treatments may involve just a few days of redness and light peeling, while more aggressive sessions can require up to one to two weeks of downtime. During this healing period, it’s essential to follow post-treatment care instructions, including gentle skincare, sun protection, and avoiding harsh products. Results from CO2 fractional laser treatments are both immediate and progressive. While patients often notice an initial improvement in skin tone and texture once the skin begins to heal, the full benefits develop over several weeks to months as collagen production continues. The outcome is smoother, firmer, and more youthfullooking skin.
It’s important to note that not everyone is an ideal candidate for this procedure. Individuals with certain skin types or medical conditions may require alternative treatments. A consultation with a qualified provider is essential to determine the best approach based on individual goals and skin concerns.
CO2 fractional laser skin rejuvenation offers a powerful, sciencebacked solution for those looking to restore their skin’s vitality. By combining precision technology with the body’s natural healing processes, it provides long-lasting improvements that go beyond surface-level results – helping patients achieve healthier, more radiant skin with confidence.

What better way to embrace the season than by springing forward with a new smile?
Starting your orthodontic journey now can be the first step toward achieving the confident, healthy smile you’ve always wanted.
A Season Of New Beginnings

Beginning treatment now means you’re investing in a future where you feel more comfortable sharing your smile every day.
Confidence That Grows Over Time
Many people don’t realize how much their smile impacts their confidence until they start orthodontic treatment. When you begin to see progress – even small changes – you often feel more excited about smiling in photos, speaking in public, and laughing freely with friends and family.
Orthodontics is not just about straight teeth. It’s about helping you feel confident in the smile you share with the world.
A Healthier Smile For the Future
Orthodontic treatment also supports long-term oral health. Prop-
erly aligned teeth are easier to clean, which can reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease. Correcting bite issues can also prevent unnecessary wear on teeth and help your jaw function comfortably.
By starting treatment now, you’re setting the foundation for a healthier smile that can last a lifetime.
Perfect Timing For Busy Schedules
Spring is also an ideal time to begin orthodontic treatment because it allows you to establish a routine before the busy summer months and upcoming school year. By starting now, you can already be making great progress by the time major events, vacations, and celebrations come around.
The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll begin seeing the results.

Elite Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics
As parents, there are few things more difficult than seeing a child in pain. A toothache, while common, can be especially distressing because it interferes with eating, sleeping, and overall wellbeing. Children may not always be able to explain what they are feeling, which makes it even more important for parents to understand the causes, symptoms, and steps to take when a toothache arises.
What Causes Toothaches In Children?
A toothache in children can stem from many issues. The most common cause is tooth decay, but other factors include gum infections, dental trauma, tooth fractures, or even food particles trapped between teeth. In some cases, emerging teeth may cause temporary discomfort. While a toothache may seem minor, it should never be ignored. Left untreated, dental pain can lead to more serious conditions, such as abscesses or widespread infections that may affect overall health.
Signs Of a Toothache
Children may not always verbalize their discomfort, so it is important to watch for warning signs, such as:
• Holding or rubbing the jaw or mouth
• Refusing to eat or drink
• Trouble sleeping or irritability
• Swelling of the cheeks or jaw
• Fever or headaches (in severe cases)
If any of these symptoms are present, prompt dental care is essential to relieve pain and identify the cause.
Emergency Dental Care
When a child experiences a toothache, timely professional care is crucial. Pediatric dentists are trained to handle emergencies with compassion and expertise. Treatment often begins with a gentle examination and, if needed, imaging to pinpoint the issue. Depending on the cause, treatment may involve:
• Fillings to restore teeth damaged by cavities
• Pulp therapy or root canal treatment for infected or injured nerves
• Extractions when a tooth cannot be saved
• Antibiotics or other medications if infection is present
When Little Smiles Hurt Toothache Relief And Emergency Care For Kids
The priority in any emergency visit is to alleviate pain while creating a calm, supportive environment for the child.
Preventing Future Toothaches
Although dental pain can occur unexpectedly, parents can help reduce risks by focusing on prevention. Key strategies include:
• Establishing strong oral hygiene habits: Encourage brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and flossing once a day.
• Regular dental visits: Check-ups every six months allow dentists to identify issues early before they become painful.
• Healthy diet choices: Limit sugary snacks and drinks that contribute to cavities, and promote a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and water.
• Protecting teeth during sports: A custom mouthguard can reduce the risk of dental injuries during physical activities.
The Bottom Line
A child’s smile is one of their greatest assets, and protecting it begins with addressing dental pain promptly and preventing future issues through good habits and regular care. If your child shows signs of a toothache, don’t wait – seek professional dental attention to ensure their comfort and long-term oral health. With the right care, children can return quickly to their routines, free from pain and full of smiles.

Back pain affects people of all sexes and ages. There are a range of causes of lower back pain, including injury, overuse, arthritis, and other medical conditions, such as degenerative disk disease. People who menstruate may also experience lower back pain related to their menstrual cycles, pregnancy, and conditions such as endometriosis.
Anatomical differences related to sex can also contribute to lower back pain. For instance, the pelvis of a person assigned female at birth is generally wider than that of a person assigned male at birth, altering the alignment and stress distribution on the lumbar spine.
What Causes Lower Back Pain?
Lower back pain is a common condition that can affect anyone. Some causes include:
Common Causes Of Lower Back Pain In Females
Muscle strain: People can strain their muscles due to overexertion, lifting heavy objects, and making sudden movements.
Ligament sprains: If a person stretches or tears ligaments supporting the spine, they can experience pain and inflammation.
Herniated discs: The soft, gel-like material inside a spinal disc can protrude and press on nerves.
Osteoarthritis: Degeneration of the spinal joints over time can lead to lower back pain.
Scoliosis: This is an atypical curvature of the spine that can cause lower back pain.
While these causes apply to anyone, certain conditions and factors may specifically affect females. Examples include:
• menstrual pain
• endometriosis
• pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
• fibroids
• ovarian cysts
Relief For Lower Back Pain
If a person has persistent or severe lower back pain, they should seek medical attention.
For mild or occasional lower back pain:
Rest and activity modification: People can avoid activities that exacerbate pain, but it is best not to stay immobile for extended periods. Gentle movements and walking can help prevent stiffness.
Heat or cold therapy: Applying a heating pad or warm compress to the lower back can relax the muscles and reduce discomfort. Alternatively, an ice pack can help reduce inflammation and numb the area.
Stretching exercises: Gentle stretching of the lower back and surrounding muscles can provide relief. It is best to consult a healthcare professional or physical therapist to learn appropriate stretches for a specific condition.
Improving posture: Maintaining good posture, whether sitting or standing, can reduce strain on the lower back. A person may be able to use ergonomic
furniture and support when necessary.
Lifestyle modifications: Managing stress, maintaining a moderate weight, and avoiding smoking can improve overall spine health.
When To Contact a Doctor Or Therapist
While home remedies can temporarily relieve lower back pain, individuals will need to contact a healthcare professional if the pain lasts more than a few days or becomes more severe.
Pain that involves any of the following could indicate nerve involvement:
• sensations that radiate down the legs
• tingling or weakness
• accompanying changes in urinary or bowel habits
• Early diagnosis and intervention are essential for managing lower back pain effectively.
Healthcare professionals can provide a proper assessment, diagnose the underlying cause, and recommend appropriate treatments to alleviate pain.
By Jeffrey L. Brown, DDS Sleep & TMJ Therapy
Did you know that the temporomandibular joints – the TMJs- can affect your smile and the health of your entire body? They most certainly do. The two small but mighty joints in your body work behind the scenes, connecting your jaw to your skull. The TMJs and their proper function is essential to your overall health. When TMJ Disorder (TMD) develops, often due to a displaced disc between the jawbone and socket, the ripple effects are significant. Nerve pressure caused by this misalignment can lead to headaches, jaw pain, neck stiffness, and disrupted sleep. Left unaddressed, TMD doesn’t just cause discomfort – it can impact how you smile, eat, and live every day. Over time, this disorder may disrupt the delicate balance of your system. Identifying and treating these issues early is key to restoring harmony to your body and reclaiming your wellness. Certainly, promoting a beautiful smile.
To diagnose TMD, the first step is obtaining a high-quality MRI of the jaw joints. However, this alone isn’t enough. The real challenge is having the scans interpreted by a radiologist with the necessary expertise. Unlike MRIs of the knee or shoulder, TMJ imaging requires advanced skills and significant experience to analyze properly. Time and again, we’ve encountered patients whose MRI reports don’t align with their symptoms. They report persistent clicking, popping, or pain, yet their reports claim no displacement. Once we redo the imaging at a trusted facility of mine, we uncover the true issues – displaced discs and degeneration – matching their discomfort. This stark contrast highlights the importance of relying on both advanced imaging technology and skilled radiologists for effective TMD diagnosis.
Experiencing TMJ pain? Early action is vital. Misaligned jaw joints may fuel inflammation, unleashing cytokines and interleukins that spread throughout your system. TMJ isn’t confined to the jaw – it can trigger broader health issues, create ongoing discomfort and disrupt daily life and your smile. Identifying the root cause quickly opens the door to focused,
A Gorgeous Smile Starts With Happy Jaws
effective treatments. A tailored recovery plan can help you find relief and restore your energy and balance. Don’t ignore the signs. Take steps today to safeguard your health and regain control over your well-being before the condition progresses further.
TMJ problems often result from years of stress and wear on the condyles and discs, leading to painful degen-
eration. Surgery might be considered in severe cases, but it’s important to remember that it’s a final, irreversible step. To avoid this, using dental appliances to relieve joint pressure is a proven strategy, giving the jaw time to recover. Additionally, therapies such as physical therapy, laser treatment, and massage can work together to reduce inflammation and manage symptoms.
With a balanced plan, many TMJ sufferers experience lasting relief and improved quality of life without the need for surgery. A healthier jaw contributes to better overall well-being, and non-invasive approaches can provide effective, long-term solutions. The goal is simple: a pain-free, happy jaw for a happier you.
Let your SMILE shine.
Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.
“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!” - D. Thomas
“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.” - Susan

Discoloration Of Children’s Teeth
By April Toyer, DDS, FAAPD Lifetime Dental Care
Many parents are naturally concerned that their child’s teeth have become yellow or discolored. It is normal for permanent teeth to be slightly darker than the pearly white baby teeth that came before them. Though, it may also indicate a more serious underlying problem.
Internal Staining
Intrinsic stains or staining from inside of the teeth cannot be removed. If you notice a grayish or darkening of a single front tooth that was not previously there this may be due to trauma.
Similar to a bruise, excessive force to the anterior teeth can cause separation of blood vessels inside the tooth, which may cause blood to enter the internal structure of the tooth. This discoloration may lighten or darken over time and should be evaluated by your child’s dentist.
External Staining
Some apple juices, grape juice, and foods and candies with dye may cause extrinsic, or surface, staining. Iron supplements may also leave a dark stain of the teeth which is hard to remove from just brushing alone. If your child is on a nighttime medication make sure that your child brushes soon after their chewable or liquid medication. This type of staining can typically be removed by at home brushing or a professional
April Toyer, DDS, FAAPD
cleaning by your dentist. Diluting your child’s juice with water can decrease the staining tendency.
Tooth decay can come in many shades from white to almost black and are typically differentiated from staining from the softness present in the enamel.
Although yellowing of the teeth can be a concern for parents, chalkiness or excessive white spots on the teeth are a major concern as well, as they can be precursors to cavities.
Enamel Hypoplasia is a tooth defect that results in a tooth having an irregular quality of enamel. In permanent teeth it typically displays with white to brown spots on the first molars and anterior upper incisors.
Causes for this condition are often unknown but may include, malnutrition, genetics, a history of illness during childhood, infection, fever or the use of medications such as antibiotics during tooth formation.
These teeth can sometimes be treated with a procedure called micro abrasion, removing the surface layer of the tooth.
For defects that extend deep into the enamel sometimes composite bonding is required or even full coverage crowns, which help protect the weaker tooth.
If you notice any suspicious areas in your child’s teeth please make an appointment with a dental professional today.

Supporting Women’s Health At Home
The Growing Importance Of In-Home Care
Women often spend their lives caring for others—raising families, supporting partners, and helping aging parents. As women grow older, however, their own health needs can become more complex. In-home care services are increasingly playing an important role in supporting women’s
health by allowing them to receive personalized care while remaining in the comfort and familiarity of their own homes.
Women tend to live longer than men, which means they are more likely to experience age-related health conditions that require ongoing support. Chronic illnesses such as osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease, and cognitive disorders like dementia are more common in older women. In-home care can help manage these conditions by providing assistance with daily routines, medication reminders, mobility support, and monitoring changes in health.
Another important aspect of women’s health is maintaining independence. Many women strongly prefer to remain in their own homes rather than move to assisted living facilities. In-home care allows them

Interceptive Orthodontics Guiding Healthy Development Early
By Michael Rogers, DDS Fairlington Dental
Looking Beyond Straight Teeth
Orthodontic care is often associated with braces during the teenage years. However, many orthodontic concerns begin much earlier as a child’s jaws and facial structures develop. Interceptive orthodontics focuses on identifying and addressing
these issues during childhood, while the bones are still growing and more responsive to guidance.
Rather than waiting for permanent teeth to come in and correcting problems later, interceptive treatment aims to guide development early. This proactive approach can improve how the teeth, jaws, and airway develop, often reducing the complexity of treatment in the future.
Why Timing Matters
Children’s mouths are constantly changing. As baby teeth fall out and permanent teeth emerge, the jaws expand and facial structures mature. During this period of growth, small adjustments can have a significant impact on long-term alignment and function. Interceptive orthodontics typically begins between the ages of six

At Fairlington Dental, we understand the connection between a healthy smile and a healthy body. As a result, we look at the whole person to discover the reasons a patient may have gum disease or a bad bite. A number of studies link heart disease and other serious conditions to the presence of periodontal (gum) disease. This research makes it vital that we take a Complete Health approach to your dental care. Dr. Rogers will listen to you, conduct a careful assessment, and carefully explain your proposed customized wellness plan. He will then take the time to answer all of your questions. You become a partner in your oral health goals!
Our team has mastered the techniques of gentle dentistry and is skilled at helping patients with any level of apprehension relax and grow comfortable with visiting the dentist. Anxiety and tension have a variety of sources, so it’s important for us to listen to your concerns as well as your goals and history. Then we address your anxieties and proceed with gentle treatment only when you’re ready. We deliver all of this in an office that is environmentally aware, while you enjoy a variety of spa-like amenities during your visit. One of our greatest joys is helping patients smile again, especially those who may not have seen a dentist in a while. You’ll be amazed at how the quality of life can change! We strive to create a partnership with you that starts the moment you walk through our door.

People who have lost their teeth, or are going to lose their teeth, are looking for the latest technology as a solution. Of course, this is a very difficult problem for a number of reasons, and finding the right solution for you can be a life-changing experience.
Dental implants have evolved to the point where you can now get new teeth in one day. This gives you the benefit of a proven, efficient, and time saving technology to give you back the smile you had before tooth loss. It has a proven record of success and rehabilitates the patient with immediate function and comfort with unsurpassed esthetics in usually one appointment.
Another important consideration is the financial aspect of dental treatment to save teeth, graft bone, or a combination thereof. While these are respected and valuable methods of tooth treatment, in many cases, the teeth cannot really be saved and the time and expense to go that route may not be the best avenue for the patient.
The dental implant method can save the patient time and financial expense by avoiding expensive and time consuming bone grafting and trying to save questionable teeth. This procedure also uses fewer dental implants with the “new teeth in a day” All-on-4 technique.
Patients who have dentures and partials also have a new option that can help people who feel like they are stuck with dentures for the rest of their lives – to get rid of those dentures and have all new teeth in as little as one day.
The treatment time is much shorter than with conventional dental implant treatment and there are fewer appointments. This treatment improves one’s health by being able to efficiently and painlessly chew food, therefore improving digestion and nutrition and maintaining proper oral hygiene.
It can also make some people look younger by opening the bite and filling out the face. Speech,
New Teeth In One Day
appearance, and self-esteem are improved. One can interact socially and eat food with confidence. People can definitely live better than they were without teeth and perhaps live longer. With this procedure, age is usually not an issue.
It may be time to look into dentures, but with implants and the All-on-4 technique, patients may find this to be a better choice. Most patients are healthy enough to have new teeth through dental implants so there is no reason for them to wear dentures.

Meet Dr. Leonard Toyer
Like Dr. April, Dr. Leonard Toyer grew up traveling as an “army brat.” His family finally settled down in Fairfax County Virginia in his teenage years. After high school Dr. Toyer went on to receive his undergraduate degree in biology from Hampton University. Always knowing he wanted to be a dentist, he next attended Virginia Commonwealth University to obtain his Doctorate in Dental Surgery in 2003. Wanting to increase his speed and proficiency in advanced dental techniques, Dr. Toyer then went to the University of Maryland to receive his two year certificate in Advanced General Dentistry, completed in 2005. There he practiced implant placement and restoration, rotary endodontics, hard and soft tissue surgeries, and cosmetic procedures in addition to general dentistry. Since the completion of this program he has been developing his craft as an associate dentist in the state of Virginia for the past seven years. He is an active member in the community where he volunteers his time at local clean-up programs and homeless shelters. He also is involved in youth programs, mentoring students, and participating in scholarship drives with the local chapter of his fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha. Dr. Toyer is committed to advanced education in his field. He has been trained by the Hiossen Advanced Dental Implant Research & Education Center to become proficient in implant placement and restoration.

balanced smile. A smile with beautifully aligned teeth will definitely make a better first impression.
Over the past several years adult orthodontic therapy has increased in popularity. Oral health awareness, longer life expectancy and higher quality of life play into this trend. A study conducted in March, 2010 by Michigan’s Wayne State University, concluded that people with bigger smiles may actually live longer.

Why You’re Still Tired
The Hidden Hormone
Imbalances Women Ignore
Feeling constantly tired, even after a full night’s sleep, is one of the most common complaints among women. While busy schedules and stress often get the blame, persistent fatigue is frequently rooted in underlying hormone imbalances that go unnoticed or are dismissed as “normal.”
One major contributor is thyroid
serve their natural teeth and maintaining what we have has become more important than ever. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, from 1994 to 2004 there was a 37% increase in adult patients, and the percentage keeps increasing. Some famous adult orthodontic patients who improved their smiles include Tom Cruise, Kelly Brook, Diana Ross, Whoopi Goldburg, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Nicolas Cage, Venus Williams, Cher and the list goes on.
Tom Cruise got his braces when he was 40 years old and filming Minority Report. Check out his smile in Rain Man or The Firm and compare to post-braces Tom in Valkyrie or Tropical Thunder.
The biological process involved in tooth movement is the same in both adults and children. As long as the periodontium (supporting bone and
gums) is healthy, teeth will respond to orthodontic treatment. With all the recent innovative advancements in orthodontics, wearing braces has never been easier.
The newer appliances greatly reduce discomfort, decrease the frequency of visits and shorten treatment time. Adults have many treatment options available now. Modern metal braces are smaller in size, less visible and more hygienic.
Aesthetic clear braces and lingual braces are another very popular option. Some patients may even be candidates for treatment with Invisalign.

dysfunction. The thyroid regulates metabolism, energy production, and body temperature. When it’s underactive (hypothyroidism), even slightly, it can lead to ongoing fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and sensitivity to cold. Many women fall into a gray area where their lab results are technically “normal,” but not optimal for how they feel. This disconnect leaves symptoms untreated and misunderstood.
Another overlooked factor is HPA Axis Dysfunction or what’s often referred to as adrenal fatigue – a term used to describe dysregulation of the body’s stress response system. While not an official medical diagnosis, the concept reflects a very real issue: chronic stress can disrupt cortisol patterns. Instead of a healthy rhythm (high in the morning, lower at night), cortisol may become erratic. The result? Waking up exhausted, hit-

Many women live with chronic headaches, neck stiffness, or shoulder tension and assume the cause is stress, posture, or long hours at a desk. They try massage therapy, chiropractic care, stretching routines, or pain medications – yet the symptoms persist. What often goes unnoticed is that the source of these problems may begin in a place few people think to look: the jaw.
The lower jaw connects to the skull through the temporomandibular joints (TMJ), two highly specialized joints located just in front of the ears. These joints work closely with muscles that extend into the neck and upper spine. When the jaws are prop-
But when the jaws are misaligned – even slightly – the body compensates. The lower jaw may shift to one side or backward to fit under a narrow upper jaw. This shift changes how muscles fire throughout the head and neck. Over time, that imbalance can create twisting forces in the cervical spine, increasing pressure on muscles, discs, and nerves.
This is why many patients with TMJ disorders report symptoms that seem unrelated to dentistry: unilateral headaches, chronic neck tension, shoulder pain, or facial asymmetry. Women are affected by TMJ disorders more frequently than men. Hormonal influences on joint ligaments, higher rates of clenching or grinding during stress, and airwayrelated breathing patterns may all contribute. Many patients notice that symptoms appear primarily on one side of the face or neck, reflecting asymmetrical jaw positioning.
In my clinical experience as an orthodontist, many of these issues

When it comes to your child’s dental development, early intervention can make a lifetime of difference. One of the most innovative tools used by airway-focused dentists and orthodontists is the ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functional) appliance – a gentle, growth-guidance appliance that helps the body achieve natural balance and healthy development.
What the ALF Appliance Does –And What It Isn’t
The ALF is not an expander. Traditional expanders mechanically widen the palate, but the ALF works in harmony with the body’s own growth patterns. It is a growth-guidance appliance designed to facilitate natural development by gently assisting the tongue in moving the bones of the skull, allowing growth to occur the way nature intended.
The ALF acts almost like a “surrogate tongue,” allowing the brain to redirect resources for growth through functional swallowing, nasal breathing, and a nervous-system reset. Because it is so delicate and precise, the ALF requires meticulous training and expertise to use correctly – its effectiveness depends on the practitioner’s deep understanding of oral-facial development and the connection between posture, airway, and overall health.
A Whole-Body Approach To Dental Health
The ALF philosophy views the mouth as part of the body’s larger postural and functional system. By supporting balanced growth, proper tongue position, and healthy airway development, this gentle form of growth guidance can positively influence a child’s overall well-being – from sleep and focus to confidence and comfort.
Children who breathe well, sleep well, and swallow properly often experience improvements not just in their dental health but in behavior, learning, and physical comfort as well.
Early Evaluation Is Key
Although orthodontic guidelines often suggest evaluation by age 7, many airway-focused providers em-

phasize that for certain growth and airway issues, that may already be too late.
Signs of improper jaw development can appear as early as infancy –even within the first few days of life. Babies and toddlers who show trouble latching, snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, difficulty eating solid foods, teeth grinding, frequent
ear infections, or speech issues may already be exhibiting early indicators that the jaws and airway are not developing correctly.
If you notice these signs, it’s important to consult a knowledgeable, airway-focused provider who can evaluate your child’s growth patterns and guide proper jaw and brain development. Early detection and proac-
tive, collaborative intervention allow for gentler, holistic treatment and the best long-term outcomes.
Healthy Growth Creates Healthy Smiles – and Healthy Lives.

What Is CEREC Dentistry?
By Zina Alathari, DMD Tysons Dental Corner
CEREC stands for “chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics” and is a computer-aided design and manufacturing system for dentists. CEREC combines a camera, computer, and milling instrument into one machine allowing tooth restorations to be created in the dentist office, all within a single visit.
In 1985 Serona launched CEREC, which marked the beginning of digitalization in dentistry.
CEREC crowns are more efficient and technologically advanced and have become the preferred option.
While it can take weeks to receive a traditional dental crown, a CEREC crown uses computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to create crowns in a single appointment. Not only that, but they allow for a better bite and more natural teeth for patients.
CEREC crowns fit perfectly. They look and feel like a real tooth thanks to computer-aided technology.
At your appointment, your dentist will use a small camera to create a 3D digital impression of your mouth. A milling unit is then utilized to create the ceramic crown. The dentist will then paint and glaze each tooth to match the rest of your mouth. Once this is complete, the dentist can bond the tooth into your mouth in a matter of minutes. It’s that quick and easy.
The entire process should only take about two hours. The CEREC crowns are created with advanced accuracy and precision, look and feel like a real tooth, and every step of the process is much more comfortable for the patient.
You won’t need to wear a tem-
porary crown or have uncomfortable impressions of your mouth taken. Plus, you will experience much less
post-operative sensitivity. And don’t forget, you only need to schedule a single appointment.

and ten, when early signs of crowding, bite misalignment, or jaw development issues may become visible. Addressing these concerns during active growth allows providers to work with the body’s natural development rather than trying to correct fully formed structures later.
Common Issues Interceptive Orthodontics Can Address
Early orthodontic evaluation can reveal several developmental patterns that benefit from early guidance. These may include crowding caused by narrow dental arches, crossbites where upper and lower teeth do not align properly, or significant overbites and underbites.
Interceptive care may also address habits that affect development, such as prolonged thumb sucking or mouth breathing. These patterns can influence how the jaw grows and how teeth align over time. Identifying them early helps prevent more complex issues from developing.
Supporting Healthy Jaw and Airway Development
Interceptive orthodontics is not only about creating space for teeth. It also supports balanced jaw growth and proper oral function. The way the jaws develop can influence breathing, tongue posture, and overall facial structure. When the upper jaw is narrow or underdeveloped, it can contribute to crowding and reduced airway space. Early orthodontic guidance may help promote healthier expansion and development, supporting both dental alignment and breathing patterns.
What Treatment May Involve
Interceptive orthodontic treatment varies depending on the child’s specific needs. Some children benefit from simple space maintainers that preserve room for incoming permanent teeth. Others may require expanders or growthguiding appliances that encourage the jaws to develop in a healthier position. These appliances are typically used for a limited period while growth
is active. In many cases, early treatment simplifies or shortens any future orthodontic care that may be needed during adolescence.
Early Evaluation Makes a Difference
Because growth patterns are easier to guide than to correct, early orthodontic evaluation is an important step in preventive dental care. Identifying developmental concerns early allows families and providers to make informed decisions about whether interceptive treatment would be beneficial.
A Preventive Approach
Interceptive orthodontics should be approached with a focus on growth, function, and long-term health. Evaluations consider how a child’s teeth, jaws, and breathing patterns are developing together. When early treatment is recommended, it is designed to guide natural development and create the foundation for a healthier, more balanced smile as the child grows.
By recognizing developmental patterns early and intervening thoughtfully, interceptive orthodontics can help children avoid more complex dental challenges later in life while supporting confident, healthy growth along the way.
I n-Home Care
to do just that. Caregivers can assist with everyday activities such as meal preparation, light housekeeping, transportation to medical appointments, and personal care needs. This type of support helps reduce stress and allows women to continue living safely and comfortably in familiar surroundings.
Emotional and social well-being is also a critical component of women’s health. Many older women experience loneliness or isolation, especially after the loss of a spouse or close friends. In-home caregivers often provide meaningful companionship, conversation, and emotional support. This interaction can help improve mood, reduce anxiety, and promote overall mental wellness.
In addition, in-home care can play a vital role during recovery from illness or surgery. Women recovering from procedures such as joint replacements, heart surgery, or other medical
treatments may require temporary assistance while they heal. Caregivers can help ensure medications are taken properly, provide support with mobility, and assist with daily tasks until full strength and independence return. Family members also benefit from in-home care services. Many daughters, spouses, or relatives juggle caregiving responsibilities with careers and their own families. Professional in-home care can relieve some of this burden while ensuring their loved one receives attentive and compassionate care.
Ultimately, in-home care supports women’s health by combining practical assistance, emotional support, and personalized attention. By helping women maintain their independence, dignity, and well-being, these services allow them to age safely and comfortably in the place they call home.
Jaw a lIgnment
originate during growth. When the upper jaw develops too narrow – often due to mouth breathing or airway restriction – the lower jaw cannot position naturally underneath it. To maintain a functional bite, the lower jaw shifts to one side. Teeth may appear straight after orthodontic treatment, yet the underlying skeletal imbalance remains.
This is why modern orthodontic evaluation increasingly focuses not only on straightening teeth but also on jaw alignment, airway health,

ting an afternoon crash, and feeling wired but tired at night. Over time, this cycle drains energy reserves and impacts sleep quality.
Estrogen dominance is another key piece of the puzzle. This occurs when estrogen levels are too high relative to progesterone, even if estrogen itself isn’t elevated beyond normal ranges. Symptoms often include fatigue, mood swings, heavy or irregular periods, and difficulty sleeping. Estrogen dominance can also interfere with thyroid function, compounding the fatigue and making it harder to pinpoint the root cause.
What makes these imbalances especially frustrating is how they overlap. A woman dealing with thyroid issues may also have cortisol disruption and estrogen imbalance,

and facial balance. When the jaws are properly positioned, muscles of the head and neck can function more symmetrically, often reducing strain throughout the upper body.
For patients experiencing persistent headaches, neck discomfort, or jaw symptoms, the answer may not lie solely in the neck or shoulders. Sometimes, the missing piece is understanding how the jaws support the rest of the body.
Because true alignment doesn’t stop at the smile – it begins there.
From page 32
all contributing to the same symptom: exhaustion. Standard medical evaluations don’t always connect these dots, leaving many women without clear answers.
The takeaway is this: ongoing fatigue is not something to ignore or push through. It’s a signal. A more comprehensive approach such as looking at thyroid markers beyond basic screening, evaluating biocehmical stress patterns though diurnal cortisol measurements, and assessing female hormone balance can provide a clearer picture.
When women understand how these systems interact, they’re better equipped to advocate for themselves and seek care that addresses the root cause – not just the symptom.
Considering Neck Lift Surgery?
Reduce Signs of Aging and Treat Sagging Skin!
A neck lift can be performed for men and women of varying ages who are often frustrated by changes of the appearance of their neck and jawline. Depending on your age, a neck lift can be a short one-hour procedure to remove fat or a 3-hour procedure to remove fat, visible neck bands, and excess skin.
Neck Lift Surgery Can:
Remove Excess Skin (Cervicoplasty) • Liposuction to Remove Excess Fat
Remove or Alter Neck Muscles (Platysmaplasty)
Liposuction can be performed alone or with surgical removal of the fat under the chin through a small incision under the chin.
In patients with vertical bands in the neck, a platysmaplasty can be performed to reduce the appearance of the bands.
Sometimes a chin implant is recommended to improve the overall contour and help with excess skin.
