A landmark study published last month in the Journal of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics demonstrates a novel combination therapy that greatly improved symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

This study adds to the broader body of work over the past 15 years on a medical procedure called stellate ganglion block (SGB) used to treat anxiety and PTSD. In this randomized controlled trial (RCT), we examined whether adding SGB to cognitive processing therapy (CPT)—a wellestablished talk therapy—improved PTSD symptoms. We tested whether giving SGB before CPT works better than giving CPT alone, and whether SGB can help people who still have symptoms after therapy.

Who Doesn’t Want To Feel Better Faster?

SGB is an injection of local anesthetic along a nerve in the side of the neck that helps reset the body’s “fight-or-flight” system. It has been used safely for 100 years to treat pain and over the past 15 years has also been used to reduce anxiety and PTSD symptoms.

Eighty-six people with PTSD took part. One group received SGB before starting two weeks of daily CPT sessions. The other group completed CPT first and received SGB three months later if they were still struggling.

What we found:

• Everyone improved, but people who got SGB before CPT improved much faster.

• Those who received SGB first had quicker and greater reductions in PTSD symptoms, as well as depression, anxiety, and physical (body-related) symptoms—reducing scores by roughly 50% on PCL-5, GAD-7, PHQ-9, and PHQ15 symptom checklists.

• By week 8, 48% of SGB-beforeCPT participants reached good end-state functioning, compared to 16% in the SGB-after-CPT group.

• For people who did not improve enough with CPT alone, receiving SGB afterward led to significant symptom relief, showing it can help even when therapy by itself is not enough.

• By week 52, 81% of SGB-beforeCPT participants showed reliable improvement in PCL-5 scores, while 62% of SGB-after-CPT participants did.

• This study adds evidence that SGB can be both an effective symptomreducing procedure on its own and a valuable adjunct that enhances the impact of proven therapies like CPT.

Why This Matters

Faster symptom relief may help people better engage in therapy, feel less overwhelmed, and return to daily functioning sooner.

Bottom Line

SGB is a helpful add-on to PTSD therapy. Getting SGB before intensive therapy leads to faster improvement, and getting it afterward can still help those who need more support.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.

Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.

Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:

Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.

There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

Detecting and Preventing Urologic Cancers What You Need to Know

Urologic malignancies encompass a range of cancers that affect the urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters, prostate, and testicles. These cancers present unique challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and management, making awareness and education essential for both patients and healthcare providers.

Types Of Urologic Malignancies

Kidney Cancer: Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, and hypertension. Symptoms may include blood in urine, persistent back pain, and unexplained weight loss. Early detection is crucial, often achieved through imaging studies such as ultrasound or CT scans.

Bladder Cancer: This is characterized by malignant growths in the bladder lining. The most common symptom is hematuria (blood in urine). Risk factors include smoking,

exposure to certain chemicals, and chronic bladder infections. Diagnosis often involves cystoscopy and biopsy, while treatment may include surgery, chemotherapy, or immunotherapy.

Prostate Cancer: One of the most prevalent cancers among men, prostate cancer typically grows slowly and may not present symptoms in early stages. Risk factors include age, family history, and race. Screening methods like PSA (prostate-specific antigen) tests are vital for early detection. Treatments vary from active surveillance to surgery and radiation therapy.

Innovative Treatments

Testicular Cancer : Although rare, testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15 to 35. Symptoms might include a lump in the testicle, swelling, or discomfort. Self-examinations are encouraged for early detection as early stage cancers have cure rates above 90%. Treatment usually involves surgery, and may involve chemotherapy and radiation.

Ureteral Cancer : This malignancy affects the ureters, the tubes connecting kidneys to the bladder. Symptoms can be similar to those of kidney or bladder cancer. Diagnosis often requires imaging and biopsy. Treatment options depend on the stage and location of the cancer.

Risk Factors and

Prevention

Understanding risk factors is crucial for prevention and early detection. Modifiable factors include lifestyle choices such as smoking cessation, maintaining a healthy weight, and regular exercise. Additionally, awareness of family history can guide individuals in discussing screening options with their healthcare providers.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis of urologic malignancies typically involves a combination of physical exams, imaging tests, and laboratory tests. Biopsies are often necessary to confirm the presence of cancer. Once diagnosed, treatment plans are tailored to the individual’s needs and may involve surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapies.

The Importance Of Early Detection

Early detection significantly improves the prognosis for patients with all types of cancer, including urologic malignancies. Regular check-ups and discussions about risk factors and symptoms with healthcare professionals based on your individual lifestyle and habits. For instance, men over 50 or those with a family history of prostate cancer should consider regular screenings with PSA and/or DRE.

Kari Bailey, MD

Sleep apnea is a serious and often underdiagnosed sleep disorder that affects people of all ages and genders. Marked by repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, it disrupts normal rest and lowers oxygen levels, placing significant strain on the body. Although sleep apnea is commonly associated with men, growing evidence shows it is frequently overlooked in women, leading to delayed diagnosis and avoidable health risks.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common form, occurs when the airway collapses or becomes blocked during sleep. Classic symptoms include loud snoring, gasping for air, and excessive daytime sleepiness. However, women often experience subtler symptoms that are easier to miss. Instead of loud snoring, many women report chronic fatigue, insomnia, morning headaches, anxiety, depression, difficulty concentrating, or unexplained weight gain. These symptoms are frequently attributed to stress, aging, or hormonal changes, which can delay proper evaluation and treatment.

Hormonal changes play an important role in women’s risk for sleep apnea. Pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause can all increase vulnerability to airway obstruction during sleep. Declining estrogen and progesterone levels may affect muscle tone and breathing regulation. After menopause, a woman’s risk of sleep apnea rises significantly and can approach that of men, yet many women remain undiagnosed and untreated.

Untreated sleep apnea can have serious consequences for both women and men. It has been linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic disorders. For women in particular, sleep apnea may worsen hormonal imbalance, contribute to mood disorders, and increase cardiovascular risk –the leading cause of death among women. During pregnancy, untreated sleep apnea has also been associated with complications such as gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.

Diagnosis is a critical step toward

Sleep Apnea and Women’s Health

The Overlooked Sleep Disorder Affecting Millions

better health. Sleep apnea is typically identified through a sleep study, conducted either in a sleep laboratory or at home, depending on individual needs. Once diagnosed, effective treatment options are available. While Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy

remains the most well-known treatment, many patients struggle with comfort or compliance. For these individuals, custom oral appliance therapy can offer a comfortable, discreet alternative, especially for those with mild to moderate sleep apnea or CPAP intolerance.

Treating sleep apnea can greatly improve quality of life. Many patients

experience better energy, improved mood, sharper focus, and more restorative sleep. For women, effective treatment may also support improved cardiovascular health, weight management, and overall well-being. Sleep apnea is not just a men’s health issue – it is a widespread condition that deserves awareness, timely diagnosis, and treatment for everyone.

Your Feet Are What You Eat

Why Nutrition Matters More Than You Think

cholesterol buildup, diabetes, smoking, or high blood pressure, toes and heels suffer first. Reduced blood flow means slower healing, pain with walking, and a dramatically higher risk of ulcers and amputation.

Your feet quietly run your life. If they hurt, everything gets harder. Work, exercise, sleep, even walking from the couch to the kitchen can feel like a chore. Most people don’t think about their feet until something goes wrong, and in my office at WeTreatFeet Podiatry, many patients arrive already in crisis. I see ulcers, fractures, infections, and severe arthritis every day. Much of this is preventable – and a surprising amount of it starts not with your shoes, but with what’s on your plate.

When people think about foot health, they expect me to talk about arch supports or fancy sneakers. They’re usually surprised when I start with breakfast. Your feet are made of bone, muscle, fascia (that fibrous tissue under the skin), nerves, blood vessels, and skin. These are living tissues, and they need fuel. Food provides the building blocks that keep them strong and resilient. Structurally, your feet depend on strong bones. That means adequate calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, and protein to maintain density and resist stress fractures and deformity. Joints and cartilage rely on collagen, vitamin C, and healthy fats to stay smooth and pain-free. Muscles and tendons need protein and minerals to generate power and absorb shock. Skin and soft tissue depend on protein, zinc, vitamins C and E, and healthy fats to resist cracking, ulcers, and infection.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen “mystery” foot pain in people living on processed food and sugary drinks. When we check labs, vitamin D deficiency is common. When diet improves – more whole foods, better hydration, fewer inflammatory foods – patients often feel better. Sometimes their entire pain profile changes. That isn’t magic; it’s basic physiology.

If you remember one thing from this article, let it be this: circulation and nerves will make or break your feet over your lifetime. Healthy feet need blood flow – oxygen in, waste out. When arteries narrow due to

Certain foods protect blood vessels. Leafy greens and beets are rich in nitrates that boost nitric oxide and relax vessels. Fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines provide omega-3s that reduce vascular inflammation. Olive oil, nuts, and seeds support healthy cholesterol and vessel flexibility. Colorful fruits and vegetables supply antioxidants that protect the vessel lining.

The opposite is also true. Diets high in trans fats, fried foods, and ultra-processed snacks accelerate plaque buildup and damage blood vessels. I’ve seen this play out repeatedly – in angiography suites with my vascular colleagues and in wound care centers. Different patient, same story.

Nerves in your feet act as your early warning system. They tell you when a shoe is rubbing or when a surface is too hot. In diabetes, chronically high blood sugar damages nerves and blood vessels, leading to neuropathy – numbness, tingling, burning, or complete loss of sensation. Tight glucose

control, B vitamins, antioxidants, and a low-glycemic, anti-inflammatory eating pattern can slow damage and help preserve remaining nerve function.

I see patients daily who walk in with what they think is a “small sore.” One man in his 60s couldn’t feel a wound on his toe at all. That small sore turned out to be a deep ulcer tracking to bone. We saved the toe, but it took months of care. Better sensation and circulation could have prevented it.

Poor nutrition may not shorten your life outright – but it can make the later years far more difficult for you and your family.

The Connection Between Sleep Apnea and TMJ Disorder

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), and Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) are conditions that can severely disrupt daily life. OSA occurs when the airway is blocked during sleep, leading to pauses in breathing. This not only disrupts sleep but also poses significant health risks, such as cardiovascular issues, diabetes, and even cancer.

Temporomandibular Disorder –TMD – affects the jaw joint and the muscles controlling jaw movement. Symptoms often include jaw pain, difficulty chewing, and a clicking or locking of the jaw. These symptoms can vary in intensity and may sometimes lead to chronic discomfort.

Both Sleep Apnea and TMD are often overlooked or misdiagnosed, making awareness crucial for effective management. People experiencing symptoms of either condition should

seek medical evaluation to prevent long-term complications. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of these conditions can help in recognizing the need for timely and appropriate treatment.

Effective diagnosis usually involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and advanced diagnostic tools. In the case of Sleep Apnea, sleep studies are commonly used to measure breathing patterns, while TMD diagnosis may involve imaging techniques like X-rays or MRIs to examine the jaw joint and surrounding tissues. Recognizing the signs and seeking professional help are key steps in managing these disorders. If you look for studies, there are clear links between OSA and TMD.

Typical Dental Office

Both Sleep Apnea and TMD share several risk factors that can exacerbate symptoms. If the discs in the jaw joints are displaced, this will greatly contribute to TMD as well as OSA. Oftentimes, genetics are involved – a family history of OSA and/or TMD is common.

Another important factor is age; the likelihood of developing Sleep Apnea and TMD increases as one gets older. Being overweight is another significant risk factor for Sleep Apnea, as excess fat can obstruct the airway. This excess weight can also put additional stress on the jaw muscles, contributing to TMD symptoms.

Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!”

- D. Thomas

“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.” - Susan

Technological advancements are making significant strides in the diagnosis and treatment of both OSA and TMD. For Obstructive Sleep Apnea, the use of devices like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines has been revolutionary. These machines ensure that airways remain open during sleep by providing a constant flow of air through a mask. A custom fitted dental appliance is made for those who cannot tolerate CPAP.

On the TMD front, laser therapy is being increasingly utilized to treat jaw pain and inflammation. Laser treatments can reduce pain and promote healing by stimulating blood flow and tissue repair. Additionally, advancements in imaging techniques, such as digital X-rays and MRIs, provide detailed views of the jaw joint and surrounding structures. This allows healthcare providers to make more accurate diagnoses and tailor treatments to individual needs. Appliance therapy like the Gelb orthotic and the amazing ALF have come to the forefront in TMD treatment, and coincidentally helps with OSA.

Be sure to talk to a well educated healthcare professional who understands your needs and can analyze the situation correctly.

What People Are Really Asking

When people hear about fluoride and IQ, most are not thinking about research papers or chemical names. They are thinking about the fluoride their children use every day, brushing their teeth, rinsing, or getting fluoride treatments at the dental office. That makes sense. But the studies that raised this question are not about fluoride that touches the teeth and gets spit out. They focus on fluoride that is swallowed, the kind that goes through the body in drinking water, baby formula mixed with tap water, and foods or beverages made with fluoridated water. To understand the science, it helps to separate topical fluoride, which works on the surface of the tooth, from systemic fluoride, which travels through the bloodstream. Both play a role in oral health, but only the systemic kind is being studied for possible effects on the brain and body.

The Study That Reignited the Discussion

In early 2025, JAMA Pediatrics published a review combining 74 studies on fluoride exposure and children’s IQ. The researchers found that, overall, children with higher fluoride levels in their bodies had slightly lower IQ scores. They did not claim fluoride directly causes lower IQ, but the link appeared stronger in studies that measured fluoride inside the body, such as urinary levels, rather than simply using city water data. Their message was straightforward. The pattern is strong enough to warrant a fresh look at how much fluoride children are receiving from all sources combined.

Differing Scientific Opinions

Some academics have questioned the review, noting that many of the studies it included came from countries with higher natural fluoride levels or from communities with co-exposures such as arsenic or poor nutrition. Others have argued that the review’s methods may have combined studies of unequal quality. However, even among critics, there is general agreement that the findings raise valid questions and that more well-controlled research at U.S. exposure levels is urgently needed.

Does Fluoride Lower the IQ?

A pediatric dentist’s evidence-based look at what new studies are showing and how families can stay both cavity-free and safe.

This Was Not the First Time Scientists Saw This

The JAMA study confirmed what earlier research had already noticed. In Canada (2019) pregnant women with higher urinary fluoride had children with slightly lower IQ scores, especially boys. In Mexico (2017–2018) two separate studies linked prenatal fluoride exposure with lower cognitive and attention scores. In Canada (2020) babies fed formula mixed with fluoridated tap water scored lower on non-verbal IQ tests than breastfed babies. Earlier reviews (2012–2018) also showed an inverse relationship between fluoride exposure and IQ, though quality varied. In New Zealand (2015) one study found no difference, but it used residence rather than biomarkers to estimate exposure. Taken together, this growing body of evidence suggests a consistent pattern that deserves attention, especially for developing brains.

Beyond IQ: Other Health Clues

Even if we set aside brain development, fluoride that is swallowed leaves unmistakable signs inside the body. The most visible sign is dental fluorosis, faint white lines, cloudy patches, or brownish streaks that appear on teeth as they form. Many professionals call it a cosmetic issue, but that view misses the deeper biological meaning.

Fluorosis as a Warning Sign

Fluorosis is not merely a surface change; it is a biological warning sign of overexposure. It tells us that, during tooth development, the body absorbed more fluoride than it could safely manage. At that point, the safe threshold for cellular balance has already been surpassed. Because fluoride is strongly attracted to calcium, it tends to settle in tissues rich in calcium, including teeth, bones, the pineal gland, and even developing regions of the brain. The enamel changes we can see are simply the visible tip of a deeper metabolic shift.

Systemic Effects Beyond the Teeth

The same chemical interactions that create white streaks in enamel may also be occurring silently in the thyroid, kidneys, and nervous system, where we cannot see them with the naked eye. Fluorosis, therefore, should not be dismissed as cosmetic. It is the body’s way of signaling that fluoride exposure has reached a level capable of altering normal cellular activity. The teeth are the dashboard light, and once they show a warning, the rest of the system deserves inspection.

Topical

Fluoride: Still a Trusted Ally Fluoride that stays on the tooth surface remains one of dentistry’s most effective tools. Toothpaste, varnish, and sealants all work topically to harden enamel and prevent decay. The question today is not whether fluoride works, but how much and how it is delivered. In the 1950s, when toothpaste was rare, water fluoridation helped communities reduce cavities. Now, with widespread fluoride toothpaste, professional varnish, and better nutrition, mass ingestion may no longer add much benefit and could increase total exposure unnecessarily. Modern prevention should be targeted rather than universal ingestion.

illness should manage intake carefully.

5. Are fluoride-removing filters expensive? Not really. Reverse-osmosis systems cost about $150–300 with annual filter changes, and smaller countertop models start near $50. For families with infants or chronic illness, it is a practical safeguard.

6. How can I find out if my water has fluoride? Check your city’s annual water report or the CDC’s “My Water’s Fluoride” website. If you use a private well, have it tested, since natural levels vary widely.

7. Does bottled water contain fluoride? Some brands do and others do not. Always read the label. For baby formula, most pediatricians suggest non-fluoridated bottled or filtered water.

Fluoride

Practical Questions People Are Asking About

1. If fluoride helps teeth, why are people suddenly worried about it? Because scientists are now examining how swallowed fluoride affects other organs besides teeth. Fluoride is beneficial in small amounts, but it can accumulate in bones and tissues. Researchers are exploring its possible influence on the brain, thyroid, and kidneys. The goal is balance, not elimination.

2. How can parents protect their children without overdoing fluoride? Use toothpaste properly: rice-sized for toddlers, pea-sized for preschoolers, and teach them to spit, not swallow. Professional fluoride varnish and sealants are safe and stay on the teeth. When preparing baby formula, alternate between fluoridated and low-fluoride bottled or filtered water. Good brushing and diet remain the best cavity prevention.

3. Is fluoridated water safe during pregnancy? Pregnancy is a sensitive time for brain and organ development. Expectant mothers can use reverseosmosis or carbon filters for drinking water, mix bottled and filtered water to reduce total intake, and maintain gum health since inflammation during pregnancy can affect the baby. Lowering ingestion is a reasonable precaution, not an alarm.

4. What about adults with kidney or thyroid conditions? People with reduced kidney function clear fluoride more slowly, so it can accumulate. Those with thyroid disorders may also be more sensitive. Choose filtered or non-fluoridated water when possible. Continue using fluoride toothpaste since it acts topically. Inform your doctor about local water fluoridation to help interpret labs. Fluoride is not automatically harmful, but those with chronic

8. What is the safest overall approach? Keep topical fluoride such as toothpaste, varnish, and sealants. Reevaluate systemic exposure during pregnancy, infancy, or chronic illness. Support new U.S.-based studies that measure real fluoride levels instead of relying on decades-old data. Fluoride’s value remains, but dose and delivery are what truly determine safety.

So, Does Fluoride Lower IQ?

The fair answer is that higher systemic fluoride exposure is associated with slightly lower IQ in many studies. At typical U.S. fluoridation levels, the data are still limited. Topical fluoride remains safe and effective. In short, keep fluoride on the teeth, not in the bloodstream.

A Final Word

Community water fluoridation was one of the great health achievements of the twentieth century. Yet children today already receive fluoride from toothpaste, varnish, and food. We can preserve its benefits while reducing unnecessary ingestion. Re-examining systemic fluoride is not anti-science; it is good science. Our responsibility is to use fluoride wisely, to protect both smiles and developing minds. When death comes without warning, grief can feel disorienting and overwhelming. One moment life feels familiar; the next, everything has changed. For families and friends facing a sudden loss, there is no time to prepare, no gradual transition and often, no chance to say goodbye. In these moments, grief is not only about

Treating Sudden Loss: The Chance To Exhale

mourning a loved one, it is about making sense of a world that no longer feels safe or predictable.

An increasing number from the community, however, seek help from grief professionals after a sudden loss. This includes people grieving someone who died from substance misuse, suicide, accidents, and sudden illness such as cardiac arrest and undiagnosed advanced-stage cancer. With little exception, the families had no time to even consider death, much less prepare for it. They didn’t have a chance to say goodbye.

Adapting to the reality of sudden loss can take much longer. Often, survivors must address traumatic symptoms, while also learning to navigate

their grief. Many sudden deaths have a component of perceived preventability: If only he had gone to rehab; if only he exercised more; if only she didn’t drive that night. This is a major complicating factor in reaction to sudden or traumatic death. It is common for survivors to replay the circumstances leading up to the death, which exacerbates feelings like guilt and anger. Additionally, suicide, homicide and overdose deaths can carry a stigma that complicates the grieving process. If the loss is perceived as preventable based on bad choices, survivors can feel ostracized and lack the social support they need to cope.

For all these reasons, people experiencing sudden loss should seek bereavement support services from practices

that are supported by trauma-informed counselors. Support groups that focus on sudden loss, including groups that focus on specific types of sudden loss, can be especially helpful. Survivors can go through their daily life just holding their breath, afraid of what others may think or say. These groups give them a safe place to exhale, to share honestly about their own experience, and to be among others who understand and empathize with the stigma, guilt and anger of coming to terms with their loved one’s sudden or unexpected death.

To find a counselor, practice or support group to help you or someone you know begin to cope with a sudden loss, contact your local hospice organization or crisis-response center.

What Is Integrative Medicine?

For many years, “alternative” or “holistic” medicine was viewed as being in opposition to “Western” medicine. Today, that binary is dissolving. We are moving toward a more sophisticated model: IntegraIntegrative and Functional Medicine.

Defining the Approach

Integrative providers focus on treating the person, not just the pathology. While traditional medicine often excels at acute care (like fixing a broken bone or treating an infec-

tion), Integrative medicine excels when health issues are longstanding, intertwined, and resistant to standard protocols.

Functional medicine, specifically, acts as “medical chemistry.” It seeks to identify the root cause of a disease rather than simply checking a box for a diagnosis and matching it to a drug.

The Evolving Science

The NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) has significantly ramped up the application of rigorous scientific standards to non-traditional therapies. We no longer have to guess about the efficacy of things like acupuncture for chronic pain or the microbiome’s role in mental health; the data is catching up.

However, a challenge remains: The Funding Gap. Highquality, large-scale studies are immensely expensive. Because pharmaceutical companies often fund research where a patent (and profit)

Many Americans struggle with their weight and its bad effects on health. The typical history is that of someone making several attempts to lose weight with efforts including fad diets, commercial diets, diet pills, exercise programs and boot camps. The person often will lose a modest amount of weight for a short time and then regain the weight and sometimes more once the effort stops.

Common weight loss surgeries include the gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy or “gastric sleeve”, and the gastric band. Success depends on daily lifestyle changes that focus on small, protein-based meals with low caloric intake. Additionally, regular physical activity, support groups and routine office visits are necessary. Below are some benefits of weight loss surgery.

The Ingrown Nail

The ingrown nail involves the production of an abnormal corner nailplate. This growth presses upon the soft tissues and causes pain, inflammation and finally infection.

The first toe is the one most commonly affected, though the smaller toes may also be involved. Congenital factors such as an unusually wide nailplate or excessive curvature of the nail often play a role in the development of such problems. Other predisposing factors include tight, poorly-fitting shoes or trauma to the nailplate, often from sports involving a lot of stopping and starting. Poking at the nails or us-

ing improper cutting procedures are habits that also pose risks.

If you look at one of your nailplates; you can see that the nail comes out of a fold of skin (cuticle) and that it actually has a deep root from which it grows (the matrix). Specialized cells at the base of the matrix produce the hard protein substance of the nail. This is very similar to hair in its composition. If injured or irritated these cells produce a deformed nailplate. This can eventually result in a recurring ingrown nail.

Usually, when an ingrown nail is diagnosed, the offending portion of the nailplate (generally one of the corners) is removed. The nail will regrow in one of two ways after a period of 3-4 months. Normal growth will, of course, require no further treatment. If it becomes ingrown again, permanent correction is in order.

This procedure, done comfortably in the office, involves local anesthesia, after which the offending portion of the nailplate is removed – right down to the root. Next, a chemical is applied to the root to cauterize the ma-

Colon Cancer Risk Reduced 38% In Women Using HRT

Submitted by New Day Vitality Hormone Center

Among postmenopausal women, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use was associated with a 38% reduction in overall colorectal cancer (CRC) risk, according to a study published in Journal of the National Cancer Institute (JNCI) Spectrum (October 2020).

Another study published in BMC Cancer (2020) found that even in patients diagnosed with CRC, the current use of HRT is associated with lower risks of both CRC-specific mortality and overall mortality. This research was a metaanalysis of four randomized control trials and 16 observational studies and included 10,013 colorectal cancer survivors.

Colorectal cancer is the third

most common cause of cancer mortality in women. An American adult has about a six percent chance of developing CRC in his/her lifetime. Most CRC is preventable through regular screening but early detection also helps catch any cancer at more successfully treatable stages. In fact, the five-year survival for stage 1 colon and rectum cancer is 90.1%.

The JNCI study results indicate that both estrogen-only and estrogen plus progestin HRT formulations reduce CRC risk. However, the research noted, “although this study includes populations in many locales, the participants were predominantly white, and therefore, these findings may not be generalizable to other racial and Please see “Colon Cancer,” page 65

complimentary medicine. This article explains some of the nuances in cannabis products and their particular benefits.

Medical Cannabis In Maryland

Maryland’s Medical Cannabis Program aims to provide patients with a natural and effective alternative for managing symptoms associated with chronic illnesses. Qualified patients can access a variety of cannabis prod-

ucts, each with distinct properties and potential therapeutic benefits. Patients report using cannabis to ease severe and chronic pain, muscle spasms, severe nausea and vomiting, epilepsy and seizures, alzheimers disease, crohn’s disease, migraine headaches, anorexia, PTSD, and other conditions.

Understanding Strains

The two primary strains of cannabis, Sativa and Indica, offer divergent effects. Sativa strains are often associated with increased energy, focus, and creativity, making them suitable for daytime use. Indica strains, on the other hand, are renowned for their relaxing and sedative properties, making them ideal for nighttime use or managing chronic pain.

CBD and THC

Beyond Sativa and Indica, the distinction between Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is crucial. CBD is non-psychoactive and has gained popularity for its potential anti-inflammatory and

Type 2 Diabetes Isn’t a Life Sentence Why Reversal Is Possible

She sat in front of me with her hands folded tightly in her lap – polite, composed, and exhausted.

Not the “I didn’t sleep well” kind of exhausted.

The deep exhausted. The kind that comes from trying… and trying… and trying – yet feeling like your body is working against you.

Her A1c had climbed. Her weight

was up. Her medication list had grown. And the message she’d been hearing for years was this:

“This is progressive. It only gets worse. We’ll just keep adding medications.”

What she didn’t say out loud – but what so many patients feel – is:

“So this is just my life now?”

And that moment is exactly why this conversation matters.

Because for millions of Americans living with prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and obesity, there is a truth that is often overlooked:

Reversal is possible.

Not in a gimmicky way.

Not by throwing medications away.

Not with shame or starvation.

But in a medically grounded, evidence-supported, metabolismfocused way that restores something

Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes.

Tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people are opting for what is called “all-onfour” dental implant restoration.

An implant is a small titanium

screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth.

You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, longlasting foundation for your new teeth.

Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place, this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure – and better

Considering Neck Lift Surgery?

Reduce Signs of Aging and Treat Sagging Skin!

A neck lift can be performed for men and women of varying ages who are often frustrated by changes of the appearance of their neck and jawline. Depending on your age, a neck lift can be a short one-hour procedure to remove fat or a 3-hour procedure to remove fat, visible neck bands, and excess skin.

Neck Lift Surgery Can:

Remove Excess Skin (Cervicoplasty)

Liposuction to Remove Excess Fat

Remove or Alter Neck Muscles (Platysmaplasty)

Liposuction can be performed alone or with surgical removal of the fat under the chin through a small incision under the chin.

In patients with vertical bands in the neck, a platysmaplasty can be performed to reduce the appearance of the bands.

Sometimes a chin implant is recommended to improve the overall contour and help with excess skin.

Many people seek medical care because something doesn’t feel right. They’re tired, gaining weight, struggling with sleep, or noticing changes in mood and focus. Too often, the response is to treat each symptom separately — a medication for sleep, another for anxiety, something for blood pressure — without asking a deeper question: Why is this happening in the first place?

A Journey Of Healing

Elambert Richardson’s journey to founding Elon Roshell Day Spa & Health is a remarkable story of resilience, healing, and dedication to helping others. Richardson’s path began with a profound personal struggle and evolved into creating a sanctuary of well-being that includes innovative treatments like a unique salt cave.

Richardson, once a preschool teacher, faced a debilitating injury that altered the course of her life. Despite extensive physical therapy, her pain persisted, leading to depression and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Her doctor presented her with a stark choice: find a way to live or succumb to her condition. This critical moment propelled Richardson to seek healing beyond conventional methods.

Richardson shared another poignant aspect of her struggle: the hostile work environment that led to her depression and ultimately, PTSD. She recounts instances of mistreatment, including being ostracized by colleagues and subjected to demeaning messages. Despite enduring chronic pain and emotional distress, Richardson finds solace in helping others and is embarking on a journey of healing by sharing her story.

A pivotal turning point came with her reading of “The Ministry of Healing,” a book that highlighted the therapeutic power of helping others. This revelation ignited her determination to overcome her depression and explore a career in healthcare. Richardson began volunteering at her children’s school, pursued higher education, and ultimately found her calling in massage therapy. Overcoming Adversity Richardson’s journey was further challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced her business to close for 15 months. During this time, she also contracted the virus, requiring oxygen therapy. Remarkably, this treatment pro-

Chinese Acupuncture For Neck Pain

Chinese acupuncture has a rich history spanning over 3,000 years, forming an integral part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Acupuncture entails the delicate insertion of fine needles into specific points on the skin, aiming to induce therapeutic benefits.

The Mechanism Behind Acupuncture

Within the framework of Chinese medicine, acupuncture is rooted in the belief that it acts by clearing the blockages in the flow of energy along pathways known as “meridians.” The

underlying theory suggests that when these energy channels are obstructed, discomfort ensues.

Understanding Neck Pain Origins

The primary causes of neck pain often stem from extended periods of maintaining a fixed posture, leading to increased neck tension. Injuries can also trigger neck pain. Among adults, cervical spinal stenosis, which involves the narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck, is a prevalent factor. In the context of Chinese medicine, it is believed that external factors like wind, cold, injuries, or excessive physical activities can disrupt the flow of qi and blood in the neck, ultimately resulting in neck pain.

Notable Symptoms Of Neck Pain

Common symptoms associated with neck pain include the presence of knots, stiffness, or sharp pain in the neck region. This discomfort may radiate to the shoulders, upper back, or arms. In some cases, individuals might also experience headaches, difficulty in head and neck movement, as well as sensations of numbness, tingling,

Integrating Art Into the Journey Toward Holistic Health

Art therapy is a therapeutic modality which uses art as a means of symbolic expression of feelings and thoughts. The art making process and working with various art materials promotes change and develops insight into many aspects of everyday functioning and experiences. This process requires people to make choices which help develop positive decision-making skills. Individuals need not have specialized skills to express themselves

or weakness in the arms. Harnessing Acupuncture For Neck Pain Management

Acupuncture serves as a widely recognized approach for addressing neck pain and various musculoskeletal issues, with some compelling evidence

to support its efficacy in both short-term and long-term pain relief. An Australian randomized controlled trial sought to compare the effectiveness of acupuncture with simulated acupuncture in individuals dealing with sub-acute and

Please see “Neck Pain,” page 63

using art. In fact, imagery is often the very first language used by people of all ages and in cultures throughout the world.

The creative process allows for an opportunity to bridge the gap between an individual’s thoughts and feelings, inner and outer worlds, bringing order to confusion thereby creating an integration of these parts. The process of making art can be a valuable part of a holistic approach to treatment and can make both mental health and clinical medical issues more manageable by expressing them in a tangible format. These visual clues are extremely beneficial in aiding assessment and developing individual treatment goals and objectives. The actual process by which the artwork is made also serves as a powerful tool to reduce stress, connect with underlying issues and provide a visual method of transformation toward positive change.

Art therapy can be a primary

Consulting Hypnosis

There are many ways of healing. Healing is an awareness that you sense from your inner self (subconscious mind), that tells you that you need to explore what’s happening within yourself internally and consciously. Mind, body, and spirit (the soul) all need healing. The mind tells you what you

are experiencing in the given moment. The body reacts as the mind releases the thought. The thought can be positive or negative, and the thought sends the message to the body organs, and then the organs respond to the thought.

Consulting hypnosis – helping everyday normal people with everyday normal problems – can help you with problems or situations by help-

ing the way you interpret the thought and then respond to the thought. The thoughts that bring fear often affect the kidneys, and the thoughts that trigger anger often affect the liver and heart.

The organs reside in the body and mind by way of the body systems. The systems are managed, controlled, balanced, repaired, or healed according to the thoughts you are having about that system and the methods you choose to heal or repair that system.

Often you will hear people say that the doctor can’t seem to find their problem. Whether the doctors find or don’t find the cause of your pain (mental, physical emotional, or spiritual) it is uncomfortable. You simply want relief. You want the doctors to tell you something so that the thought can trigger an emotion in certain organs to heal or not.

Consulting hypnosis can help you sort out everyday problems such as the thoughts that surround COVID-19, or your children, spouse, boss, or whomever – the consulting hypnotist can help you sort things out.

There are many ways of healing

Hypnosis helps you to become aware of your state of mind such as your thoughts, feelings, and emotions that can get trapped in the body, in your organs. A consulting hypnotist helps you to identify the state (fear, anger, sadness, depression, or love) and release it, without the use of drugs or surgery.

Going to see a consulting hypnotist is like going to talk with a friend, a person who has everyday problems too, and who has the tools to teach you how to not just cope but live.

Often our creative imagination in our thoughts helps us to create make-believe situations. But what’s not imagined is the effect it has on your organs and your systems. What is imagined is you feeling whole and complete to go about living your life in the reality that you have healed. What is real and not imagined is going to see a consulting hypnotist, and that it does help.

Chiropractic Supports Non-Surgical Pain Relief

Chronic pain affects millions of Americans and is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care. Back pain, neck pain, headaches, joint stiffness, and nerve-related discomfort can interfere with work, sleep, exercise, and daily life. While surgery is sometimes necessary, many musculoskeletal conditions respond well to conservative, non-surgical treatment. Chiropractic care is one of the most widely used and evidence-informed options for natural pain relief.

Chiropractors focus on the relationship between the spine, joints, muscles, and nervous system. When joints in the spine or extremities lose proper motion – often referred to as joint dysfunction or restriction – it can lead to inflammation, muscle tension, nerve irritation, and pain. Poor posture, repetitive stress, injuries, and sedentary habits commonly contribute to these issues.

Rather than masking symptoms, chiropractic care aims to restore normal joint movement and improve overall function. This approach addresses the underlying mechanical cause of many common pain conditions.

The core treatment used in chiropractic care is the spinal adjustment (also called spinal manipulation). This precise, controlled movement is applied to restricted joints to improve alignment and mobility. Research shows that spinal manipulation can reduce lower back pain, neck pain, and certain types of headaches.

By restoring motion to affected joints, adjustments help:

• Decrease inflammation

• Reduce muscle tension

• Improve nerve communication

• Increase range of motion

• Support natural healing

Many patients report relief after just a few visits, particularly in cases of acute pain. Chronic conditions may require a structured treatment plan that includes additional support-

ive therapies.

Chiropractors often incorporate complementary therapies such as soft tissue therapy, therapeutic exercises, posture correction, ergonomic advice, and lifestyle counseling. Strengthening weak muscles and improving movement patterns reduces the likelihood of recurrence.

Clinical guidelines for back and neck pain frequently recommend conservative care before consider-

ing imaging, injections, or surgery. Chiropractic care fits within this evidence-based model. It is drug-free and non-invasive, making it a practical first-line option for many patients.

In many cases, surgery becomes unnecessary when mechanical issues are addressed early. Even for individuals who may eventually require surgical consultation, chiropractic care can sometimes delay or reduce the need for more invasive interventions.

When performed by a licensed and properly trained provider, chiropractic adjustments are considered safe for most individuals. A thorough evaluation – including medical history and physical examination – is conducted before treatment begins to ensure that care is appropriate.

Patients experiencing persistent pain, numbness, weakness, or worsening symptoms should seek professional evaluation promptly.

In 2009, I received a Master’s in Human Acupuncture and practiced on both humans and animals until Dr. Raichura’s passing in 2016. Now, I focus solely on treating animal patients.

I live in Germantown with my dogs, Bodhi and Jack. In my free time, I enjoy meditating, watching movies, and taking my dogs for walks.

Ying Ngo, DVM, CVA

Growing up with a background in Traditional Chinese Medicine, I discovered my passion for integrative veterinary medicine early on. My father introduced me to Gua Sha and acupressure massage, sparking my fascination with healing modalities. Initially pursuing human medicine, I worked in acupuncture clinics, volunteered at Walter Reed, and conducted research at UMD and FDA.

In 2015, I encountered Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) through Dr. Allison Marshall, a veterinarian certified in acupuncture. Inspired, I pursued veterinary medicine, earning a Bachelor’s in Biomedical Engineering at VCU in 2017 and completing my DVM at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine in 2021.

I specialize in integrative medicine, blending holistic and conventional approaches to provide optimal care. Certified in veterinary acupuncture (CVA) through Chi University, I also have experience in pathology, surgery, and exotics.

In my free time, I enjoy lion dancing, spending time with family, and exploring new foods.

Snow Shoveling Safety

With the onset of winter and the arrival of the first snowfall, it becomes crucial to address the importance of shoveling safely. Adhering to a few straightforward tips significantly reduces the risk of injuries stemming from the strain placed on the spine.

To safeguard your back, employ a technique that involves tightening your abdominal muscles while lifting the shovel and avoiding breath-holding. Bend at the knees, not the back, and wear shoes or boots with slip-resistant soles to prevent slips and falls.

Safety Guidelines For Shoveling:

• Shovel only freshly fallen snow, as wet and compacted snow can be excessively heavy. Lift small amounts at a time and opt for pushing rather than lifting whenever possible.

• Select a shovel suitable for your needs, ensuring it is chest-high with a rocker bottom. Use a smaller shovel to avoid lifting too much snow at once.

• When gripping the shovel, keep your hands at least shoulder-width

Holistic Medicine For Your Pets A Whole-Body Approach To Lifelong Health

approach, holistic practitioners carefully select remedies based on each pet’s unique needs, ensuring safety and appropriate dosing.

Holistic medicine for pets focuses on treating the whole animal—body, mind, and environment—rather than addressing isolated symptoms alone. This integrative approach recognizes that nutrition, lifestyle, emotional well-being, and physical health are deeply interconnected. As more pet owners seek natural and preventive options, holistic veterinary care has become an increasingly popular complement to conventional medicine.

At the core of holistic pet medicine is the belief that the body has an innate ability to heal when properly supported. Instead of relying solely on pharmaceuticals, holistic practitioners look for the root causes of illness, such as inflammation, stress, poor diet, environmental toxins, or imbalances in the immune system. Treatment plans are highly individualized, taking into account a pet’s age, breed, activity level, temperament, and medical history.

Nutrition is a foundational element of holistic care. High-quality, species-appropriate diets—often featuring whole, minimally processed foods—are used to support digestion, immune function, joint health, and energy levels. Some pets benefit from customized diets or targeted supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, probiotics, or herbal formulations to address specific concerns like allergies, arthritis, or skin conditions.

Holistic medicine for pets may also include therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, and myofascial release. These hands-on techniques can help relieve pain, improve mobility, and support nervous system balance. Acupuncture, for example, is commonly used to manage chronic pain, neurological issues, and postoperative recovery, while therapeutic massage can reduce muscle tension, improve circulation, and promote relaxation—especially helpful for anxious or aging pets.

Herbal medicine and natural supplements are another key component of holistic veterinary care. When prescribed by a trained professional, herbs can support organ function, reduce inflammation, and strengthen immunity. Unlike a one-size-fits-all

Preventive care is a major focus of holistic medicine. Rather than waiting for illness to develop, this approach emphasizes maintaining balance and resilience over time. Regular wellness exams, stress reduction, proper exercise, and environmental

enrichment all play a role in keeping pets healthy and happy. For many owners, holistic care also includes minimizing exposure to unnecessary chemicals, such as certain pesticides or cleaning products, that may contribute to long-term health issues.

Importantly, holistic medicine does not reject conventional veterinary care. Instead, it works alongside it. Diagnostics, surgery, and medications

are used when necessary, while holistic therapies enhance recovery, reduce side effects, and support overall well-being. Holistic medicine for pets offers a thoughtful, comprehensive way to support your companion’s health at every stage of life. By focusing on prevention, balance, and individualized care, it empowers pet owners to play an active role in helping their animals thrive naturally and comfortably for years to come.

Did you know poor nutrition can increase your pet’s risk for serious health issues – even cancer? At Crunchies, we carry only natural, holistic foods and supplements to help your pets live longer, healthier lives.

Using Brain Waves to Teach the Mind to Stay Calm and Balanced

Many of us have heard about chemical imbalances in the brain. Indeed, drugs are prescribed to treat many mental health conditions. But did you know that our brain cells also use electricity to communicate?

When our neurons send electrical signals to each other, electrical energy is emitted from our brain. Scientists have been studying this brain activity for decades. Brain waves are measured by placing sensors on the scalp, and displaying the readings through a computer. It turns out that brains make different electrical frequencies depending on what functions they are doing at the time. Different waves are emitted when we sleep or daydream, when we study or think through problems, and when we’re calm or meditative.

Neurofeedback is the process of measuring and displaying brain activity in real time. It is similar to biofeedback, wherein people can change their body temperature or heart rate when they see readings from their own bodies. This feedback loop allows our bodies to change and adjust through conscious and subconscious effort. When the brain sees what it is doing, it self-adjusts. It can train itself to be more balanced, efficient, and resilient.

Over the years, studies of neurofeedback have demonstrated that showing the brain how it is working can help improve sleep, reduce worrying and rumination, and decrease feelings of stress. People who have tried neurofeedback report feelings of calm and focus. In addition, specific neurofeedback protocols have been developed for treating ADHD, PTSD, anxiety, depression, and seizures. Some people decide to try neurofeedback to reduce stress and improve sleep without resorting to habit-forming medications. And neurofeedback can be a valuable complement to traditional talk therapy for improved mental health.

A neurofeedback session is simple and can be quite relaxing. After having sensors placed on the scalp, the client relaxes in a comfortable chair as the computer reads the

brain waves, like an EKG captures a heart’s electrical activity. The computer then communicates the brain waves back to the person, through music, images, or a video game. At Brain Spa neurofeedback, we use a non-invasive neurofeedback protocol called Neur OptimalTM. This protocol provides feedback through music. The brain picks up changes in the music that indicate that the brain has shifted into different

waves. The brain can train itself to be more flexible, or shift and adjust to be more efficient. The overall goal is for the brain to learn to use the entire range of brain waves efficiently. Brain training is client-led. Clients decide how often and for how long they want to do brain training. Most people benefit from weekly sessions for 10 to 20 sessions. Over time, the brain learns how to rebalance by itself.

Why train your brain?

Brain training, also called neurofeedback, allows your brain to see what it is doing and adjust and re-balance in response.

Our brain guides our daily habits, mindset, and function, and controls the central nervous system.

You can train your brain to discover what it is capable of and promote wellness and continued growth.

With more than 20 years and millions of hours of use worldwide, NeurOptimal® is a safe, time-tested, and effective brain training system.

When it comes to your child’s dental development, early intervention can make a lifetime of difference.

Expanding Smiles Naturally Guiding Growth With the ALF Approach

One of the most innovative tools used by airway-focused dentists and orthodontists is the ALF (Advanced Lightwire Functional) appliance – a gentle, growth-guidance appliance that helps the body achieve natural balance and healthy development. What the ALF Appliance Does –And What It Isn’t

The ALF is not an expander.

Traditional expanders mechanically widen the palate, but the ALF works in harmony with the body’s own growth patterns. It is a growth-guidance appliance designed to facilitate natural development by gently assisting the tongue in moving the bones of the skull, allowing growth to occur the way nature intended.

The ALF acts almost like a “sur-

Struggling With Focus or Behavior at School?

At Ashburn Children’s Dentistry and Womb2Grow Wellness, we specialize in identifying the hidden cause of poor sleep, behavioral struggles, and jaw underdevelopment. Our airway-focused approach supports whole-body health and lifelong confidence. Let’s uncover what’s really going on – together. Your child’s jaw and airway development may be the missing link.

rogate tongue,” allowing the brain to redirect resources for growth through functional swallowing, nasal breathing, and a nervous-system reset. Because it is so delicate and precise, the ALF requires meticulous training and expertise to use correctly – its effectiveness depends on the practitioner’s deep understanding of oral-facial development and the connection between posture, airway, and overall health.

A Whole-Body Approach To Dental Health

The ALF philosophy views the mouth as part of the body’s larger postural and functional system. By supporting balanced growth, proper tongue position, and healthy airway development, this gentle form of growth guidance can positively influence a child’s overall well-being – from sleep and focus to confidence and comfort.

Children who breathe well, sleep well, and swallow properly often experience improvements not just in their dental health but in behavior, learning, and physical comfort as well.

Early Evaluation Is Key

Although orthodontic guidelines often suggest evaluation by age 7, many airway-focused providers emphasize that for certain growth and airway issues, that may already be too late.

Signs of improper jaw development can appear as early as infancy –even within the first few days of life. Babies and toddlers who show trouble latching, snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, difficulty eating solid foods, teeth grinding, frequent ear infections, or speech issues may already be exhibiting early indicators that the jaws and airway are not developing correctly.

If you notice these signs, it’s important to consult a knowledgeable, airway-focused provider who can evaluate your child’s growth patterns and guide proper jaw and brain development. Early detection and proactive, collaborative intervention allow for gentler, holistic treatment and the best long-term outcomes.

ing. How To Master Meditation With Acupuncture is a guide that explores how these practices can be combined to enhance overall well-being.

Combining these practices can amplify their individual benefits:

Enhanced Relaxation: Acupuncture can help deepen your meditation practice by promoting relaxation and reducing physical tension.

Improved Focus: Meditation enhances mental clarity, which can make acupuncture sessions more effective.

Balanced Energy: Both practices together help harmonize the body’s energy, leading to better health outcomes.

The synergy between meditation and acupuncture creates a powerful tool for self-care and overall well-being.

Understanding Meditation and Its Techniques

Meditation is an ancient practice that helps you clear your mind and find emotional peace. It involves concentrating on something specific, like your breath or a guiding image, to improve your focus and awareness. Read on so you can better understand how to mas-

ter meditation with acupuncture. Common Meditation Techniques

Here are some popular meditation techniques:

Breath Awareness: This technique involves focusing on the breath. You pay attention to each inhale and exhale, which helps bring your mind back to the present moment whenever it wanders.

Guided Imagery: In guided imagery, you follow along with a mental visualization led by an instructor or audio recording. This method can help you relax by imagining peaceful scenes and scenarios.

Mindful Meditation: This practice encourages you to be fully present in the moment. It involves observing your thoughts and feelings without judgment, promoting a deeper understanding of yourself.

Knowing how to meditate properly can help you incorporate acupuncture into your wellness routine. Each method has its own benefits and can be customized to suit your needs and preferences. To continue reading this article, please visit: https://yhm.news/WAA

Teen Suicide

Teen Suicide Awareness and Prevention

Teen suicide is a concerning issue that ranks as the third leading cause of death among teenagers. Every 17 minutes, a teenager tragically succeeds in taking their own life. These statistics underscore the gravity of the problem and emphasize the importance of understanding who may be at risk and how to offer assistance.

Teenagers often grapple with thoughts of death, making it crucial

to take suicide attempts seriously. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that for every completed suicide, there may be as many as 25 suicide attempts that go unreported. Recognizing that a teen’s suicide attempt is a plea for help is vital in preventing future, potentially fatal attempts.

Several strong risk factors contribute to teenage suicide, including aggressive or disruptive behavior, substance abuse, and depression. These factors often intensify the turbulent emotions experienced during adolescence, fostering a sense of hopelessness and despair. Acknowledging these feelings as legitimate and offering support is critical in the battle against teen suicide.

Access to firearms is another risk factor to consider, given that they are involved in over half of teen suicides. Limiting access to firearms and ammunition for teenagers expressing suicidal thoughts is an essential safety measure. Understanding warning signs is paramount, as studies indicate that four out of five teen suicide attempts

The majority of our clients suffer from chronic pain or trauma which inhibits them from conducting their daily living activities or reaching their goals of being pain and stress free.

Mindfulness and Movement

Mindfulness and movement can be combined together to complement the primary care provider’s prescribed treatment. So many clients are living with chronic pain, trauma, and disease that it has become a common household topic.

Today some of the most popular practices for well-being are through equine training, therapeutic horticulture, meditation and yoga. All the above can provide forms of mindful movement.

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly

acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

Mindful movement can be described as any movement activity that is practiced mindfully, by giving attention, presence, and intention to whatever the form of movement may be. It can be accomplished through activities such as equine therapy, gardening, walking, yoga, etc,. to name a few.

We implement programs geared toward individual needs to glean from the incentives gathered from the practice of mindfulness.

We believe total well-being starts with balance—of body, mind, and spirit.

Our mission is to empower women, veterans, and families through movement, mindfulness, and nutrition. Join our workshops and wellness programs featuring: Mindful Movement & Breathwork – Therapeutic Horticulture Yoga for Trauma & Stress Relief – Nutrition and Wellness Coaching Whether you’re healing from life’s challenges or simply ready to grow stronger inside and out—there’s a place for you here.

Mindful Resilience (MR), or therapeutic yoga is a program that was developed by Dr. Dan Libby of the Veteran Yoga Project (VYP) which includes practices that have been chosen based on the feedback of hundreds of veterans and active service members who suffer from the aftereffects of combat or other trauma. MR programs report improvements in mood, impulse behavior, irritability, concentration, and sleep.

There are five parts to Mindful Resilience training:

• Breathing – Techniques that can help relieve anxiety and can be used anywhere and anytime.

• Meditation – Enhances focus and concentration, settles the mind, and promotes a sense of wellbeing.

• Mindful Movement – Postures that bring the body through its natural range of motion to enhance strength and flexibility and reinforce the connection between mind and body.

• Guided Rest – Guided exercises can lead to deep and profound relaxation.

• Gratitude – Simple practices that promote a positive outlook.

Equine Facilitated Therapy, used for personal development and learning can be used effectively for both adults and youth where they are offered social activities based on their horse experience. This type of training provides positive results to improve cognitive functions including strategies for organized behavior and self-awareness with mindfulness skills as a recovery tool for individuals under enormous amounts of stress.

This therapy is also known to be beneficial in improving motor skills for those seeking treatment for cerebral palsy, Downs syndrome, autism, and sensory integration disorder. When this type of therapy is offered, we partner with equine and physical therapist.

Therapeutic Horticulture, uses plants and outdoor environments to achieve the mindfulness health goals. The American Horticulture Therapy Association (AHTA) defines therapeutic horticulture as “the process through which participants enhance their well-being through active or passive involvement in plant-related activities. Nonetheless, there have been breakthroughs reported for eating disorders, PTSD, depression, anxiety, developmental disabilities, dementia, brain injury, cancer, and physical disabilities.

And lastly rest, walking and water, will never steer you wrong. So let’s relax and let it go.

Why Sleep Is Different For Women Hormones, Life Stages,

and Restless Nights

Annapolis Asthma, Pulmonary & Sleep Specialists

Many adults struggle to get the recommended 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. While improving sleep habits — like maintaining a regular bedtime — can help, some individuals continue to experience poor-quality rest due to underlying sleep disorders. These conditions often go unrecognized, yet they can have serious effects on overall health and daily functioning.

Snoring is one of the most common sleep-related concerns. While it may seem harmless, chronic or loud snoring can signal deeper issues, such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Snoring results when airflow is partially blocked during sleep, causing vibration of the tissues in the throat. If the airway becomes fully blocked, breathing temporarily stops — a key feature of OSA.

Obstructive sleep apnea is marked by repeated pauses in breathing throughout the night. These interruptions disrupt sleep cycles and often leave individuals feeling exhausted during the day. OSA has been linked to high blood pressure, heart disease, and other serious health concerns.

Insomnia involves difficulty falling or staying asleep. It may be acute, triggered by temporary stress or lifestyle changes, or chronic, lasting months or years. Insomnia affects both mental and physical health, often contributing to irritability, memory issues, and weakened immunity.

Sleep paralysis occurs when a person wakes up and becomes consciously aware but cannot move or speak. These episodes are usually brief but can be distressing. In some cases, they are associated with other sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy.

Please see “Restless Nights,” page 62

Over 70 million Americans suffer from sleep disorders. Sleep problems affect both sexes, all races and all age groups.

Left untreated, sleep disorders can pose serious threats to your health. Heart attack, heart failure, irregular heartbeats, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, acid reflux, attention deficit disorder and depression are conditions associated with sleep problems.

At Annapolis Asthma, Pulmonary & Sleep Specialists, we provide expert diagnosis and treatment to help you achieve restful, healthy sleep.

A bunion is a “bump” on the joint at the base of the big toe the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint

Causes Of Bunions

that forms when the bone or tissue at the big toe joint moves out of place. The toe is forced to bend toward the others, causing an often painful lump of bone on the foot. Because this joint carries a lot of the body’s weight while walking, bunions can cause extreme pain if left untreated.

Bunions are among the most common type of foot ailment today’s podiatrist treats, especially in women. Studies shows that women are anywhere from two to nine times more likely to develop a bunion than

men. While your high heels and peep toes are partially to blame, your foot type (passed down through your family) is the true culprit.

Bunions form when the normal balance of forces that is exerted on the joints and tendons of the foot becomes disrupted. This disruption can lead to instability in the joint and cause the deformity. Bunions are brought about by years of abnormal motion and pressure over the MTP joint. They are, therefore, a symptom of faulty foot development and are usually caused by the way we walk and our inherited foot type or mostly pointed shoes.

Although bunions tend to run in families, it is the foot type that is passed down not the bunion. Parents who suffer from poor foot mechanics can pass their problematic foot type on to their children, who in turn are prone to developing bunions. The abnormal functioning caused by this faulty foot development can lead to pressure being exerted on and within the foot, often resulting in bone and joint deformities such as bunions and hammertoes.

Other causes of bunions are foot

injuries, neuromuscular disorders, or congenital deformities. People who suffer from flat feet or low arches are also prone to developing these problems, as are arthritic patients and those with inflammatory joint disease. Occupations that place undue stress on the feet are also a factor; ballet dancers, for instance, often develop the condition.

While your high heels and peep toes are partially to blame, your foot type (passed down through your family) is the true culprit. Wearing shoes that are too tight or cause the toes to be squeezed together is also a common factor, one that explains the high prevalence of the disorder among women.

Mental Illness: What To Do?

There has always been much said in the media about mental illness, particularly schizophrenia. There was the tragedy many years ago of the Yates family and five dead children, and the tributes given to the movie Beautiful Mind at the Oscars back in 2002. How does one sort out how to respond to such divergent aspects of an illness?

Anger, horror, and fear are natural responses to physical harm or death as in the Yates’ situation. Astonish-

ment, hope, respect may be some of the emotions evoked by the movie honored in 2002. However, I suspect for many people fear and avoidance are more frequently associated with mental illness.

In the real world, for many people diagnosed with schizophrenia or other serious mental illnesses, they struggle to manage symptoms of the illness without ever harming anyone physically or achieving the national achievements of Nash in the movie. They are learning daily to manage an illness that can exhibit many facets. People do experience voices, see visions that seem real and are not real. They have difficulty sorting out some of their perceptions and whether they are exaggerated or “normal”. They are working to perform every day tasks while experiencing these symptoms to a greater or lesser degree. Medication, in recent years, has helped with symptoms. Talking with someone; therapist, rehabilitation staff, family or friends to “check out” what is accurate

Cerec Dental Technology

A smile is one of our greatest personal assets; it is a reflection of happiness and good health, yet many people avoid smiling because they are concerned about the condition of their teeth. Proper dental care is critical to preserving and, when necessary, restoring your unique smile. And now, thanks to recent innovations in dentistry, proper dental care does not have to take away from your regularly scheduled life.

The dental profession is evolving, and so should your experience. New

technology helps diagnose problems earlier, allowing dentists to treat problems sooner and with less invasive techniques. The latest in comfortable and convenient dentistry is now available with CEREC® tooth restoration system. Using the CEREC equipment, your dentist can now complete a color-matched ceramic tooth restoration – filling, crown or veneer – in a single visit. This technology uses biocompatible, tooth-colored material, so your dentition won’t be discolored by silver-colored fillings.

What Is CEREC?

CEREC is an acronym for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Translated, it means that a dentist can economically restore damaged teeth in a single appointment using a high-quality ceramic material that matches the natural color of other teeth.

How Does The Instrument Work?

CEREC uses CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and milling machine in one instrument. The Please see “Cerec Dental,” page 62

Coping With Nasal Allergies

Submitted by Kensington Pharmacy

Do you have a nasal allergy? Nasal allergies cause the lining of your nose to become swollen and inflamed. Do you have:

• A runny nose with a thin, watery discharge?

• Nasal itching and congestion?

• Red, itching eyes?

• Sneezing?

• Drainage from your nose down the back of your throat?

If so, you may be a nasal allergy sufferer. Your pharmacist can help you decide whether to see a doctor or whether to treat your symptoms yourself.

The next question to ask yourself is if your allergies are perennial, seasonal, or both?

Many different triggers can cause nasal allergies.

Perennial Triggers

• Dust mites

• Animal hair or dander

• Indoor mold

Because these triggers are present all the time, these allergies are said to be perennial.

Seasonal Triggers

• Pollen from trees

• Ragweed

• Grass

• Weeds

Because these triggers are around only during certain times of the year, these allergies are said to be seasonal. Some people suffer from both per-ennial and seasonal allergies. They may have symptoms all year round, but they tend to be worse during certain seasons.

How Do I Avoid the Triggers That Cause My Nasal Allergies?

Avoiding triggers entirely probably is not possible. But you can do a number of things to minimize them. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about specific products – such as filters and bedding covers – that can help you clear your environment of triggers.

The Power Of the Narrative

A cornerstone of this field is the “Oslerian” philosophy. Sir William Osler famously said, “Listen to the patient, he is telling you the diagnosis.”

In our current high-speed medical system, time is a luxury many doctors aren’t given. When a physician is forced to fit a patient into a “diagnostic box” within a 15-minute window, the nuance of the patient’s history is lost. Integrative medicine reclaims that time, recognizing that:

• Intuition Matters: If a patient is fundamentally opposed to a treatment, the “nocebo effect” (the reverse of the placebo) can actually hinder physiological recovery.

• The Interrelationship of Systems: A skin rash, a digestive issue, and joint pain are rarely three separate problems. They are often three symptoms of one underlying systemic imbalance.

True health requires a synthesis of the best available tools. The modern hierarchy of care should look like this:

1. Foundational Wellness: Prioritize personalized nutrition, targeted vitamins, restorative sleep, and functional movement.

2. Biocatalysts: Use healing herbs and low-dose, bioidentical hormones to correct identified deficiencies.

3. Advanced Intervention: Utilize prescriptions and surgery when necessary – but as a precise intervention rather than a lifelong default.

4. Cutting-Edge Recovery: Incorporate emerging modalities like Red Light Therapy, PRP (PlateletRich Plasma), and regenerative medicine to augment the body’s innate healing capacity.

Moving Forward

The goal is not to choose between “natural” and “traditional,” but to find a doctor who listens carefully to your history. When you address the root cause, the multitude of symptoms often begins to resolve on its own.

Reversal Of Health Problems

Many health conditions are reversed after surgery. Diabetic patients, for example, have an immediate reduction or even cessation of their diabetic medications. Many will not need to go back on these medications. unwavering vigilance and support. It is imperative for guardians to convey love and support to teenagers, letting them know they are not alone in their struggles. Additionally, educating oneself about the signs of suicidal thoughts and feelings is crucial, as is seeking professional help when needed. Narcolepsy is characterized by extreme daytime sleepiness and sudden episodes of falling asleep, sometimes without warning. People with narcolepsy may also experience sleep paralysis, vivid hallucinations during sleep transitions, and muscle weakness triggered by emotions (cataplexy).

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs that create an overwhelming urge to move them, especially at night. This can interfere with falling asleep and lead to fragmented sleep.

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) causes persistent, unexplained tiredness that does not improve with rest. While it may be linked to other conditions like sleep apnea, CFS can also occur independently.

Recognizing the signs of sleep disorders is an important step toward better rest and better health.

dentist uses a special camera to take an accurate picture of the damaged tooth.

This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where the dentist uses CAD technology to design the restoration. A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant.

Dentists no longer need to create temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the traditional second visit has been eliminated.

CEREC has two decades of clinical research and documentation to support the technology. The restorations have been proven precise, safe and effective.

analgesic properties. It is especially effective in reducing or eliminating seizures in children. In contrast, THC is responsible for the euphoric “high” associated with cannabis use, making it a valuable tool for managing conditions like nausea and chronic pain.

Terpenes

Terpenes are naturally occurring chemical compounds found in plants. They are responsible for the aromas, flavors, and even colors associated with various types of vegetation. What they do in humans is still a bit of a mystery. However, cannabis researchers and consumers alike are increasingly using terpenes to classify cannabis products and predict their effects.

The theory is that a plant’s terpene profile works in tandem with its cannabinoid content — including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) — to produce the effects people associate with different strains.

This may explain why two differ-

From page 22

ent strains with the same level of THC can produce such different effects.

A Personalized Plan

Personalized treatment plans are essential. Patients are encouraged to work closely with healthcare professionals to define the objectives for using medical cannabis.. Patients should seek out a dispensary that can answer a wide variety of questions about CBD, THC, and terpenes to guide patients to the most effective product for their particular needs. As Maryland continues to pave the way for progressive healthcare, understanding the diverse world of medical cannabis is essential for patients seeking natural alternatives. By appreciating the properties of cannabis strains, individuals can make informed choices to enhance their well-being within the framework of the state’s evolving medical cannabis program. Always consult with healthcare professionals to tailor a treatment plan that aligns with your unique health requirements.

After her recovery, Richardson experienced a life-changing dream that inspired her to create a comprehensive health and wellness center in Calvert County. This vision became Elon Roshell Day Spa & Health, featuring an array of services designed to promote natural health and wellness, including an oxygen bar, hyperbaric chamber, and a signature salt cave.

The salt cave is a central feature of Richardson’s spa. Constructed with real salt bricks, the cave offers a serene environment where visitors can experience the benefits of inhaling medical-grade salt. These benefits range from improved skin health and respiratory relief to overall relaxation. “It’s good for your skin. If you have eczema, it’s good for different skin conditions. Also your lungs. The results revealed that those who received genuine electroacupuncture treatment experienced significantly greater reductions in pain intensity at three and six months, as compared to the sham electro-acupuncture group (Spine, April 2011).

Incorporating Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese medicine encompasses a diverse array of practices, including Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture/moxibustion, among others. The use of Chinese medicine

therapies, such as herbal remedies and acupuncture, for managing neck pain, has not only been widespread but also highly effective, extending its reach not just within China but also across Europe.

Navigating Acupuncture Safety

While acupuncture is generally acknowledged as a safe therapeutic method, potential side effects may include dizziness, localized internal bleeding, dermatitis, nerve damage, or occasionally heightened pain—especially when administered by less experienced practitioners. Therefore, the role of a well-trained and seasoned acupuncturist is paramount in ensuring both safety and effectiveness.

The medical field and those diagnosed with a serious mental illness are learning much these days about what and why these illnesses occur. As the answers unfold, there will be more opportunity to overcome symptoms and prevent the diseases.

Persons when first diagnosed with a mental illness frequently experience the same emotions as many in society––fear,

avoidance, denial. However, knowledge is power. Learning about the illness, what occurs and how others have dealt with schizophrenia and other affective disorders shifts control and extinguishes fear. None of us need avoid mental illness, we need to learn what it means, how to recognize the illness, and how to seek help when necessary. Very few of us will be untouched by someone having emotional problems, perhaps a serious one. All of us need to know where to find help, and assist each other.

Type 2 dia BeTe S

many patients have lost: hope.

The Myth That Has Cost Patients Their Future

Many people believe type 2 diabetes is permanent – genetic destiny that can only be “managed.”

That mindset often means:

• more medications

• stricter warnings

• waiting for complications

Neuropathy. Kidney disease. Vision problems. Heart attacks. Strokes.

One of the cruelest parts of this myth is what it does emotionally. It teaches patients to accept decline as inevitable. But type 2 diabetes is not simply high blood sugar. It is a metabolic disease – often driven by insulin resistance – and metabolic states can change.

In clinical practice, I see reversal regularly. Patients who once believed they were destined to worsen begin seeing improvements in A1c, fasting glucose, energy, and medication needs – under careful medical supervision.

This isn’t theory. It’s real life.

Prediabetes Is Not “Almost Diabetes”

Prediabetes is often treated casually. But prediabetes is diabetes already in motion.

Insulin levels are often elevated. Weight gain begins to feel automatic. Many patients are told: “Just watch it.” But watching it is not a plan.

Prediabetes should be treated with urgency – because it is often the stage where reversal is most achievable.

Obesity Isn’t a Moral Failure

i nTegarTive

simply be “normal aging.” It could reflect thyroid dysfunction, insulin resistance, nutrient deficiencies, or hormonal shifts. Digestive concerns may be linked to stress, food sensitivities, or inflammatory processes.

Lifestyle medicine plays a central role in integrative care. Nutrition is tailored to support metabolic stability and reduce inflammation. Physical activity is chosen to build strength and resilience without overstressing the body. Stress management, sleep hygiene, and restorative practices are treated as essential components of health — not afterthoughts.

Integrative medicine does not

Obesity is not laziness.

And it is not always solved by “eat less and move more.”

If it were, we wouldn’t be facing a national crisis.

Many patients are already doing what they were told:

• smaller portions

• low-fat foods

• calorie counting

• cardio workouts

Yet they feel stuck. Constant hunger. Weight regain. Self-blame.

What’s happening is deeper than discipline.

It’s biology.

The Real Culprit: Insulin Resistance

When the body becomes resistant to insulin, it produces more and more of it. That creates a metabolic cycle:

• elevated insulin promotes fat storage

• fat storage fuels inflammation

• inflammation worsens insulin resistance

• insulin resistance drives more insulin production

That cycle drives:

• prediabetes

• type 2 diabetes

• stubborn weight gain

• fatigue

• high triglycerides

• fatty liver

The goal isn’t only to lower blood sugar. The deeper goal is to calm the insulin signal and restore metabolic flexibility.

Why Many Patients Keep Getting Worse

Most conventional care focuses on glucose numbers. And glucose

From page 26

reject conventional care. Instead, it blends evidence-based medical treatment with preventive and lifestyle strategies. When appropriate, medications may be used — but alongside nutrition guidance, movement plans, and personalized coaching that empower patients to participate actively in their own healing.

Health is not simply the absence of disease. It is the presence of balance, vitality, and clarity. By treating the whole person rather than isolated symptoms, integrative health helps individuals move beyond managing illness and toward building sustainable, long-term wellness.

control matters.

But when insulin resistance isn’t addressed, patients often experience a pattern:

• temporary improvement

• rising hunger

• stalled weight loss

• increasing fatigue

• escalating medication

It becomes a treadmill.

And patients blame themselves –when they were never given the right metabolic strategy.

The Turning Point

When patients finally hear, “This can change,” many don’t believe it.

But once they understand the relationship between carbohydrates, glucose, insulin, hunger, and fat storage, something shifts.

Carbohydrate reduction –including low-carb and ketogenic nutrition – can lower insulin demand.

When insulin demand drops:

• glucose stabilizes

• fat burning increases

• cravings decrease

• appetite becomes manageable

• energy improves

For many, that shift feels like freedom.

What Reversal Actually Looks Like

Reversal doesn’t mean perfection.

It means:

• blood sugar in a non-diabetic range

• significantly lower A1c

• safe medication reduction

• weight normalization

• improved metabolic markers

But the greatest change is often invisible:

Patients stop living in fear of food. They stop feeling powerless. They begin trusting their bodies again.

A Key Safety Point

Nutritional change can alter medication needs quickly. If someone reduces carbohydrates while taking insulin or certain diabetes medications, blood sugar can drop too low.

Reversal should never be done recklessly or unsupervised.

The safest approach includes:

• clinical monitoring

• blood sugar tracking

• medication adjustment protocols

• individualized planning

Reversal is not anti-medication. It is pro-health.

A Closing Message

If you’ve been told diabetes is forever, hear this: You are not broken. You are not weak. And you are not destined to decline. Your body is responding to metabolic signals. And those signals can change.

Reversal is possible. And hope belongs in the diabetes conversation.

Other studies have determined minor variations in HRT impact on subtypes of colorectal tumors, the underlying mechanisms of how HRT impacts CRC requires further study.

It is important to note that only 39.4% of CRC cases are diagnosed at the local stage. About one-third of adults aged 50 or older (about 22 mil-

HRT is safe for almost all women according to the latest medical research (Mayo Clinic: The Menopause Solution, 2018) and does not increase all-cause mortality (Journal of the American Medical Association, Sept. 12, 2018). • Refrain from shoveling right after eating or while smoking.

• If you have a history of heart issues, obtain your doctor’s approval before engaging in shoveling activities.

• Prior to shoveling, warm up your body, and stretch once you are done.

• Pace yourself to avoid exhaus-

treatment modality or can be used to support other treatment protocols to address both medical and mental health issues. The art making process is effective in helping individuals manage many of the physical effects of health issues including chronic pain, auto immune illnesses, disabilities, trauma and other physical issues which can cause impairment in daily functioning. Art therapy is also extremely helpful in addressing the emotional responses which coincide with these health issues.

Engaging in the process of art therapy during individual, group or family sessions helps people gain insight about their inner worlds, past/

present experiences, life transitions and relationships. Artist Georgia O’Keefe said, “I found that I could say things with colors and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way-things I had no words for.” Art therapy often provides a more direct connection to unconscious thoughts and feelings. This can help working with issues like anxiety, trauma, depression, anger, relationships and negative selfconcept by making it easier to express complicated ideas and emotions which can often be difficult to discuss. Art making used in the therapeutic process offers individuals a valuable pathway toward healing and well-being.

Your Mouth Is Connected To Nearly Every System In the Body

Most people think of dentistry as separate from the rest of their health. In reality, your mouth is connected to every system in the body — including digestion, airway health, inflammation, metabolism, immune function and even musculoskeletal balance.

The oral cavity is the beginning of the digestive tract. When bacteria are imbalanced or inflammation is present in the gums, the body responds systemically. Research continues to show links between the oral cavity and inflammation, diabetes and insulin control, chronic fatigue, immune system function, cardiac health, and conditions like Alzheimers.

Airway health is equally important. A restricted airway during sleep can contribute to snoring, poor oxygenation, disrupted sleep cycles, weight gain and metabolic imbalance. Addressing inflammation and airway function in the mouth can positively influence sleep quality, oxygen levels and overall energy.

Jaw alignment and bite instability may also contribute to neck pain, back pain, migraines and chronic tension. Tooth pain and sensitivity can decrease job performance and life enjoyment. Dental discomfort and high dental anxiety often keep people from seeking care, yet there are solutions available to relieve pain comfortably and support patients who experience fear or stress in the dental chair.

Material choices matter. Bio compatible all natural porcelain crowns and porcelain implants provide metal-free options for patients seeking holistic solutions. Plant and herbal cleanings free of toxins available.

Your smile is the one investment that shows up all day long. A healthy beautiful smile can give you more energy, confidence, opportunities and longevity. When patients restore their smiles, they often notice improvements not just in appearance, but in posture, communication, self-esteem and overall presence.

Holistic dentistry looks beyond the surface of the teeth. When the mouth is healthier, patients often report improved sleep, clearer thinking, better digestion, fewer headaches and increased overall vitality.

Oral wellness is not cosmetic. It is foundational.
