The Future Of Medicine Treating Mind and Body Together

For many years, healthcare has separated mental health from physical health. Patients often see one provider for medical conditions and another for emotional or psychological concerns. However, modern healthcare is beginning to recognize what many providers and patients have long understood that the mind and body are deeply connected, and treating one without the other often leads to incomplete care.

At Calmaia Minds Health and Wellness, our approach focuses on whole-person care. This means addressing physical health, emotional wellbeing, and lifestyle factors together rather than treating symptoms in isolation. When patients come into the clinic, they are not just a diagnosis or a list of symptoms, they are individuals with unique life experiences, stressors, and health histories that all influence their wellbeing.

For example, conditions such as anxiety, depression, fatigue, weight changes, hormonal imbalance, and chronic inflammation often overlap. A patient experiencing persistent fatigue may be dealing with a combination of stress, hormonal imbalance, poor sleep, nutritional deficiencies, or underlying mental health concerns. Treating only one aspect of the problem may offer temporary relief, but identifying the root cause allows for more meaningful and lasting improvement.

Please see “Mind and Body,” page 57

At the Minimally Invasive Vascular Center (also known as MIVC) we have long been committed to addressing the vascular devastation that is rampant in our community. Each year cardiovascular disease is the world’s largest killer; killing more Americans than cancer. If you have painful legs, wounds that won’t heal, varicose veins, leg swelling, history of smoking, or have a family history of vascular problems and/ or are over the age of 50, you may suffer from poor circulation. Poor circulation may be responsible for causing erectile dysfunction in as much as 50 to 70 percent of men who develop the condition. Now we are happy to add expanded services! Our goal is to extend the healthy lifespan of our patients by using a comprehensive, integrative approach to achieve the most effective results. We believe that Beauty Is a Reflection of Health and Wellness. We want you to be as beautiful on the outside as you are healthy on the inside.

Your Health Magazine is on a mission. There are far too many people, insured or not, who do not go to the doctor when they should, and in millions of cases, don’t know who they should go to, or why.

People are encouraged to buy a new house, car, cell phone or big screen TV, and those companies make themselves very visible and their products easily attainable.

Information about, and from, local healthcare providers is not easy to find, and many times those services are difficult to access.

Information and encouragement always lowers fear and trepidation about anything, and this is especially true in healthcare. While general information is available on web-sites, specific information from local providers is almost impossible for people to find. This is one of the key reasons chronic and episodic conditions are not cared for. It is our mission to:

Make A Difference By Empowering and Encouraging People To Live Healthier By Going To the Doctor When They Should.

There is a lot of evidence that the health professionals who participate in Your Health Magazine have helped many people over the years. We at Your Health Magazine salute you!

If you would like to find out how you can participate in one of our upcoming editions, please contact the office nearest you.

Urologic health is a vital component of overall well-being, yet it is often overlooked—especially when it comes to women. Women’s urologic health involves the care and maintenance of the urinary tract and reproductive organs, and addressing the unique challenges that women face in this area is essential

Women’s Urologic Health Understanding, Prevention, and Care

for long-term health and quality of life.

Common Urologic Conditions In Women

1. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): UTIs are among the most common urologic issues affecting women. Due to the shorter length of the female urethra, bacteria can more easily reach the bladder, leading to infections. Symptoms include a burning sensation during urination, frequent urges to urinate, and cloudy or strongsmelling urine. Prompt treatment with antibiotics and good hygiene practices can help prevent recurrent infections.

2. Overactive Bladder (OAB): OAB

is characterized by a sudden and frequent need to urinate, sometimes accompanied by leakage. It can be caused by factors like weakened pelvic muscles, nerve damage, or hormonal changes. Treatment options include lifestyle modifications, pelvic floor exercises, medications, and in some cases, surgical interventions.

3. Urinary Incontinence: Incontinence, or the involuntary loss of urine, affects women of all ages but becomes more common after childbirth and menopause. Stress incontinence (leakage during physical activity) and urge incontinence (a sudden,

Innovative Treatments

intense need to urinate) are the most common types. Treatments range from physical therapy and bladder training to medications and surgical procedures.

4. Interstitial Cystitis (IC): Also known as painful bladder syndrome, IC is a chronic condition causing bladder pressure, pain, and frequent urination. Though its exact cause is unclear, treatments focus on symptom relief through dietary changes, physical therapy, medications, and bladder instillations.

5. Pelvic Organ Prolapse: This condition occurs when the muscles and tissues supporting the pelvic organs weaken, causing organs like the bladder, uterus, or rectum to drop into the vaginal canal. Symptoms include pressure, discomfort, and difficulty with urination or bowel movements. Treatment may include pelvic floor exercises, pessaries, or surgery.

Prevention and Care

Maintaining urologic health involves a combination of lifestyle choices, preventive care, and regular medical check-ups. Here are some key strategies:

• Stay Hydrated: Drinking enough water helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract and supports overall kidney function.

• Practice Good Hygiene: Wiping from front to back, wearing breathable cotton underwear, and avoiding harsh soaps can reduce the risk of infections.

• Strengthen Pelvic Floor Muscles: Kegel exercises can help prevent incontinence and support bladder control.

• Maintain a Healthy Diet: Limiting bladder irritants like caffeine, spicy foods, and acidic beverages can help manage symptoms of overactive bladder and IC.

• Regular Medical Checkups: Annual visits to a gynecologist or urologist can help catch potential issues early and ensure comprehensive care.

When To See a Urologist Women should consult a urologist if they experience recurring UTIs, incontinence, pelvic pain, or any other persistent urinary symptoms. Early diagnosis and intervention can prevent complications and improve quality of life. Women’s urologic health is an essential but often under-discussed aspect of medical care. By understanding common conditions, taking preventive measures, and seeking timely medical advice, women can maintain better urinary health and overall well-being.

Sleep apnea is far more than loud snoring or restless nights. It is a chronic medical condition with systemic consequences that extend well beyond fatigue. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common form, occurs when the airway repeatedly collapses during sleep, causing brief interruptions in breathing. These episodes can happen dozens—or even hundreds—of times per night, silently stressing the heart, brain, and metabolic system.

The Heart:

Repeated Oxygen Deprivation

Each time breathing stops, oxygen levels drop and carbon dioxide levels rise. The body responds with a surge of stress hormones, including adrenaline, which increases heart rate and blood pressure. Over time, this repeated cycle contributes to sustained hypertension, even during waking hours.

Untreated sleep apnea is strongly associated with cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery disease, heart rhythm disorders such as atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and increased risk of stroke. The intermittent oxygen deprivation and inflammation place chronic strain on blood vessels and cardiac tissue, accelerating vascular damage. For many patients, resistant high blood pressure is the first red flag that sleep apnea may be present.

The Brain:

Cognitive and Emotional Impact

The brain is highly sensitive to oxygen fluctuations. Repeated nighttime oxygen drops impair restorative sleep stages, particularly deep and REM sleep, which are critical for memory consolidation and emotional regulation.

Patients with untreated sleep apnea often report difficulty concentrating, brain fog, memory lapses, and reduced productivity. Over time, chronic sleep fragmentation has been linked to increased risk of mood disorders, including depression and anxiety. Emerging research also suggests that untreated sleep apnea may increase long-term risk of cognitive

decline and dementia due to ongoing oxidative stress and impaired cerebral blood flow.

Daytime drowsiness is more than an inconvenience—it significantly increases the risk of motor vehicle accidents and workplace errors.

Metabolism:

The Hidden Hormonal Disruption

Sleep plays a foundational role in metabolic regulation. Disrupted sleep alters insulin sensitivity, increases cortisol levels, and interferes with appetite-regulating hormones such as leptin and ghrelin. The result is increased hunger, cravings for highcarbohydrate foods, and weight gain.

There is a well-established bidirectional relationship between sleep apnea and obesity. Excess weight increases airway collapse risk, while untreated sleep apnea promotes metabolic dysfunction and fat storage. Sleep apnea is strongly associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Even in nonobese individuals, untreated OSA can impair glucose metabolism.

People love foot creams, and I’m all for them—but they only work when internal hydration and nutrition are addressed. Venous insufficiency and lymphatic issues cause fluid to pool in the lower legs and feet. Ankles swell, skin becomes shiny and fragile, and small injuries can turn into chronic wounds because the tissue is waterlogged and poorly nourished.

Diet plays a quiet but powerful role here. High sodium intake leads to more fluid retention, swelling, and pain. Adequate water intake helps the kidneys flush excess sodium and keeps blood volume stable. Potassium-rich foods like bananas, leafy greens, and beans, along with magnesium from nuts, seeds, and whole grains, help the body move fluid properly and prevent blood vessels from clamping down.

I can often spot a salt-heavy diet by mid-afternoon: deep sock marks carved into the legs and shoes tight by day’s end. Yes, we talk about compression stockings—but we also talk about canned soups, fast food, and salty snacks.

The fascia under your foot— commonly involved in plantar fasciitis—and the skin covering it depend heavily on hydration and nutrientdense food. Dehydration makes fascia stiff and irritable, while poor nutrition leaves skin thin, dry, and prone to cracking. Regular water intake, waterrich produce, adequate protein, vitamin C, zinc, and healthy fats support collagen production and skin repair. You can’t out-cream a bad diet.

Your feet contain 26 bones and dozens of joints. When these weaken, everything downstream becomes harder. Standing at work, walking for exercise, even balancing in the shower depend on foot strength and stability. Osteopenia and osteoporosis often show up as stress fractures, midfoot collapse, and painful deformities. These aren’t just “bad luck”—they’re often nutritional and lifestyle stories playing out in bone.

Calcium from dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods builds bone. Vitamin D helps absorb that

Your Feet Are What You Eat How Diet Keeps Your Feet Moving

calcium, while protein and trace minerals like magnesium, zinc, and manganese keep bones resilient.

In my practice, I see a familiar pattern: a busy postmenopausal woman, minimal dairy, lots of coffee, little sun, long hours on hard floors. She comes in with sudden forefoot pain. X-rays reveal a stress fracture. We use a boot—but we also talk about breakfast, vitamin D levels, and realistic dietary changes.

Arthritis in the feet thrives on inflammation and excess load. Food

won’t reverse severe arthritis, but it absolutely influences pain and progression. Anti-inflammatory eating patterns—fatty fish, olive oil, nuts, seeds, leafy greens, colorful vegetables, berries, turmeric, and ginger— can reduce systemic inflammation. Limiting sugar, refined carbohydrates, and excess alcohol helps too. Even modest weight loss can significantly reduce joint stress.

When patients ask, “Okay, Doc—what should I actually do?” I keep it simple: build meals around

vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fats; choose low-glycemic carbs; cut back on sodium and ultra-processed foods; drink water throughout the day; and move daily—even 10–15 minutes helps circulation and lymph flow. Finally, don’t ignore the basics. Check your feet daily, especially if you have diabetes or circulation issues. Address blisters, calluses, swelling, or pain early. Wear supportive footwear that fits properly. Healthy feet keep you moving—and movement keeps you living.

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings remarkable changes to the body. As the baby grows, a woman’s center of gravity shifts, hormones loosen ligaments, and additional weight places stress on the spine and pelvis. These changes often lead to common discomforts such as lower back pain, hip pain, sciatica, and poor posture. Chiropractic care can play a supportive role in helping pregnant women manage these changes safely and comfortably.

Chiropractic care focuses on maintaining proper alignment of the spine and musculoskeletal system. During pregnancy, this alignment becomes especially important. As the abdomen expands, the lower back tends to curve more than usual, which can place strain on spinal joints and surrounding muscles. Chiropractors trained in prenatal care use gentle techniques designed specifically for pregnant patients to help restore balance and relieve pressure on the spine and nerves.

One of the most common reasons pregnant women seek chiropractic care is relief from back and pelvic pain. Research suggests that more than half of pregnant women experience significant lower back discomfort at some point during pregnancy. Gentle chiropractic adjustments may help reduce tension in the spine and pelvis, improving mobility and easing pain without the need for medication.

Pelvic alignment is another important focus during pregnancy. The pelvis supports the uterus and growing baby, and misalignment in this area can contribute to discomfort and restricted movement. Some chiropractors use specialized prenatal techniques to help maintain balanced pelvic alignment. When the pelvis is properly aligned, it may create more space for the baby to move and position naturally.

Chiropractic care during pregnancy may also help improve posture and overall body mechanics. As pregnancy progresses, many women

develop compensating postures that strain the back, neck, and shoulders. A chiropractor can help correct these patterns and recommend simple stretches, exercises, and ergonomic adjustments that support the body throughout pregnancy.

Safety is an important consideration for expectant mothers. Chiropractors who work with pregnant patients typically use special tables or pillows that allow the abdomen to rest

comfortably during treatment. Techniques are modified to ensure gentle, low-force adjustments appropriate for pregnancy.

In addition to adjustments, chiropractors often provide guidance on posture, movement, and lifestyle habits that support a healthier pregnancy. This may include recommendations for sleeping positions, lifting techniques, stretching routines, and exercises that strengthen the muscles

supporting the spine and pelvis. For many women, chiropractic care becomes part of a broader prenatal wellness routine that includes regular obstetric care, healthy nutrition, and appropriate exercise. When performed by a chiropractor trained in prenatal techniques, chiropractic care can be a safe, drug-free option to help pregnant women stay comfortable, mobile, and supported throughout pregnancy.

A Gorgeous Smile Starts With Happy Jaws

Did you know that the temporomandibular joints – the TMJs- can affect your smile and the health of your entire body? They most certainly do. The two small but mighty joints in your body work behind the scenes, connecting your jaw to your skull. The TMJs

and their proper function is essential to your overall health. When TMJ Disorder (TMD) develops, often due to a displaced disc between the jawbone and socket, the ripple effects are significant. Nerve pressure caused by this misalignment can lead to headaches, jaw pain, neck stiffness, and disrupted sleep. Left unaddressed, TMD doesn’t just cause discomfort — it can impact

how you smile, eat, and live every day. Over time, this disorder may disrupt the delicate balance of your system. Identifying and treating these issues early is key to restoring harmony to your body and reclaiming your wellness. Certainly, promoting a beautiful smile.

To diagnose TMD, the first step is obtaining a high-quality MRI of the jaw joints. However, this alone isn’t

Typical Dental Office

enough. The real challenge is having the scans interpreted by a radiologist with the necessary expertise. Unlike MRIs of the knee or shoulder, TMJ imaging requires advanced skills and significant experience to analyze properly. Time and again, we’ve encountered patients whose MRI reports don’t align with their symptoms. They report persistent clicking, popping, or pain, yet their reports claim no displacement. Once we redo the imaging at a trusted facility of mine, we uncover the true issues—displaced discs and degeneration—matching their discomfort. This stark contrast highlights the importance of relying on both advanced imaging technology and skilled radiologists for effective TMD diagnosis.

Dr. Jeffrey Brown has limited his practice to focus only on TMJ Disorders, Craniofacial Pain Management and Sleep Apnea. By fixing slipped discs in the jaw joints, Dr. Brown can significantly reduce the pain patients experience in the head/neck region and other symptoms associated with jaw joint problems. Sleep & TMJ Therapy may be able to improve the quality of life for you or a loved one – we encourage you to contact us with any questions or concerns.

“Dr. Brown and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I was diagnosed with Dystonia. I could not turn my head and had a ton of pain. My doctors offered no help and no advice besides Meds and Botox. Since having the appliance I have NO pain and I can turn my head. I would highly recommend them to anyone. I feel Dr. Brown and his staff really care about their patients and helping them to get better. They do not just numb the symptoms but fix the problem. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I feel like the old me again!” - D. Thomas

“My daughter has been treated by Dr. Stack and Dr. Brown for the last 2 1/2 years, and we are very fortunate to have found them. Prior to that she was being treated by a neurologist at a Children’s hospital. She was on medications for tics and associated muscle pain, OCD/repetitive thoughts, sleeplessness and more (all possibly associated with Tourettes). Drs. Stack and Brown installed spacers to alleviate pressure on nerve bundles in the jaw, and subsequently braces to complete the process. Her symptoms have diminished significantly. She is off medication, her tics have all but disappeared, she can concentrate better in school, and she is once again cheerful and relaxed.” - Susan

Experiencing TMJ pain? Early action is vital. Misaligned jaw joints may fuel inflammation, unleashing cytokines and interleukins that spread throughout your system. TMJ isn’t confined to the jaw—it can trigger broader health issues, create ongoing discomfort and disrupt daily life and your smile. Identifying the root cause quickly opens the door to focused, effective treatments. A tailored recovery plan can help you find relief and restore your energy and balance. Don’t ignore the signs. Take steps today to safeguard your health and regain control over your well-being before the condition progresses further.

TMJ problems often result from years of stress and wear on the condyles and discs, leading to painful degeneration. Surgery might be considered in severe cases, but it’s important to remember that it’s a final, irreversible step. To avoid this, using dental appliances to relieve joint pressure is a proven strategy, giving the jaw time to recover. Additionally, therapies such as physical therapy, laser treatment, and massage can work together to reduce inflammation and manage symptoms. With a balanced plan, many TMJ sufferers experience lasting relief and improved quality of life without the need for surgery. A healthier jaw contributes to better overall wellbeing, and non-invasive approaches can provide effective, long-term solutions. The goal is simple: a pain-free, happy jaw for a happier you.

Let your SMILE shine.

All-On-Four Dental Implants

Can just four implants replace all of the teeth on the top or the bottom of your mouth? Thanks to advances in

dental implant technology, that answer is a resounding yes.

Tooth loss is extremely common among adults, especially as we age. Rather than living with the discomfort and hassles of dentures, many people are opting for what is called “all-on-

four” dental implant restoration.

An implant is a small titanium screw that fits inside your jawbone and replaces the root-part of a missing tooth. Minor surgery is required to insert the implants. Once the implant is in place, a crown is attached to give you a highly realistic-looking and functional prosthetic tooth.

You do not need a dental implant for each and every one of your missing teeth. All you need is four precisely placed implants on the top of your mouth, and four on the bottom, to restore your full smile. That’s the beauty of the all-on-four. And because the implant is made of titanium, it has the unique ability to fuse to living bone and function as part of it. So eventually, the dental implant becomes part of the jawbone and serves as a strong, longlasting foundation for your new teeth.

Besides ensuring that your implants are permanently fixed in place, this bone fusion has another important benefit: it prevents future bone loss in the jaw. This helps to maintain a more youthful facial structure – and better oral health. But perhaps the biggest surprise about the all-on-four is how quickly it can transform your life.

What’s The All-On-Four Dental Implant Procedure Like?

First, either local or general anesthesia will be administered.

Second, the dentist or surgeon will prepare your mouth for the implants, which involves removing your remaining teeth that are failing. They will then remove any diseased or infected tissue from your jaw and gums.

Next, they will insert the titanium screws into your jawbone. Most likely, they will place two implants toward the front of your mouth and two towards the back of your mouth so the “anchors” can evenly bare the force of the denture.

After the implants have been placed, they will thoroughly clean the

From early adulthood through midlife and beyond, a woman’s health is shaped by changing hormones, metabolism, stress levels, lifestyle, and life demands. These systems are interconnected. When one area becomes imbalanced, others often follow. Yet many women spend years treating symptoms without understanding the underlying cause.

Women are often taught to push through discomfort. Fatigue, weight changes, mood shifts, disrupted sleep, or feeling “off” are frequently dismissed as stress, aging, or something to be tolerated. But women’s health is complex, dynamic, and deeply individual—and those signals from the

Subtle changes in energy, focus, appetite, or mood may be early signs of hormonal shifts, metabolic changes, thyroid imbalance, or chronic stress. These changes don’t always show up clearly on routine tests, which is why individualized evaluation and context matter so much.

Over the past few years, many find themselves caught in a cycle of weight gain, sedentary habits, poor nutrition, and increased alcohol consumption. When these factors converge, “vitality” can feel like a distant memory. However, by addressing a few core physiological pillars, you can reclaim your sense of aliveness.

Quality sleep is the bedrock of health. Weight gain often triggers sleep apnea, a dangerous condition that causes chronic fatigue and significantly raises the risk of heart disease, stroke, and hypertension. It is nearly impossible to function optimally when your sleep is fragmented. If you wake up tired, consulting a physician for a sleep evaluation is a non-negotiable first step.

The Gut-Body Connection

Gastrointestinal issues—such as bloating and irregular bowel movements—are more than just inconveniences. Conditions like bacterial or yeast overgrowth, as well as developing food intolerances, can drain your energy. These issues are highly treatable once properly diagnosed by a physician familiar with functional GI health.

Hormonal Balance and The Stress Factor

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

In Western medicine, we are most familiar with treatment via medication or surgery. However, there is another mode of medical treatment: physical medicine. It is less heralded in the West and used mostly for some chronic musculoskeletal conditions (MSK). For example, sometimes physical therapy (PT) may be recommended if drug therapy fails and before (or after) MSK surgery. PT is a form of physical medicine; the application of some external

physical force to the body to effect some diminishing of symptoms and/or speed healing. Massage therapy is ancient. The adage RICE/rest, ice, compression, elevation is still commonly employed for a sprained, swelling ankle. At physical therapy, aside from exercises and tissue manipulation, the therapist may apply electrical stimulation or deep heat through ultrasound to the injured tissue.

“Shockwave” for chronic MSK problems was originally developed in Europe decades ago. It involves not an electric shock but pressure wave pulses of specific frequency and intensity sent through the targeted tissue. When first used in the U.S., the device was the size of a large cabinet and cost a quarter million dollars and therefore was often rented for a session and brought to the doctor’s office. The energy pulses were quite high intensity so the therapy was performed under some form of anesthesia and in one session.

What People Are Really Asking

When people hear about fluoride and IQ, most are not thinking about research papers or chemical names. They are thinking about the fluoride their children use every day, brushing their teeth, rinsing, or getting fluoride treatments at the dental office. That makes sense. But the studies that raised this question are not about fluoride that touches the teeth and gets spit out. They focus on fluoride that is swallowed, the kind that goes through the body in drinking water, baby formula mixed with tap water, and foods or beverages made with fluoridated water. To understand the science, it helps to separate topical fluoride, which works on the surface of the tooth, from systemic fluoride, which travels through the bloodstream. Both play a role in oral health, but only the systemic kind is being studied for possible effects on the brain and body.

The Study That Reignited the Discussion

In early 2025, JAMA Pediatrics published a review combining 74 studies on fluoride exposure and children’s IQ. The researchers found that, overall, children with higher fluoride levels in their bodies had slightly lower IQ scores. They did not claim fluoride directly causes lower IQ, but the link appeared stronger in studies that measured fluoride inside the body, such as urinary levels, rather than simply using city water data. Their message was straightforward. The pattern is strong enough to warrant a fresh look at how much fluoride children are receiving from all sources combined.

Differing Scientific Opinions

Some academics have questioned the review, noting that many of the studies it included came from countries with higher natural fluoride levels or from communities with co-exposures such as arsenic or poor nutrition. Others have argued that the review’s methods may have combined studies of unequal quality. However, even among critics, there is general agreement that the findings raise valid questions and that more well-controlled research at U.S. exposure levels is urgently needed.

Does Fluoride Lower the IQ?

A pediatric dentist’s evidence-based look at what new studies are showing and how families can stay both cavity-free and safe.

This Was Not the First Time Scientists Saw This

The JAMA study confirmed what earlier research had already noticed. In Canada (2019) pregnant women with higher urinary fluoride had children with slightly lower IQ scores, especially boys. In Mexico (2017–2018) two separate studies linked prenatal fluoride exposure with lower cognitive and attention scores. In Canada (2020) babies fed formula mixed with fluoridated tap water scored lower on non-verbal IQ tests than breastfed babies. Earlier reviews (2012–2018) also showed an inverse relationship between fluoride exposure and IQ, though quality varied. In New Zealand (2015) one study found no difference, but it used residence rather than biomarkers to estimate exposure. Taken together, this growing body of evidence suggests a consistent pattern that deserves attention, especially for developing brains.

Beyond IQ: Other Health Clues

Even if we set aside brain development, fluoride that is swallowed leaves unmistakable signs inside the body. The most visible sign is dental fluorosis, faint white lines, cloudy patches, or brownish streaks that appear on teeth as they form. Many professionals call it a cosmetic issue, but that view misses the deeper biological meaning.

Fluorosis as a Warning Sign

Fluorosis is not merely a surface change; it is a biological warning sign of overexposure. It tells us that, during tooth development, the body absorbed more fluoride than it could safely manage. At that point, the safe threshold for cellular balance has already been surpassed. Because fluoride is strongly attracted to calcium, it tends to settle in tissues rich in calcium, including teeth, bones, the pineal gland, and even developing regions of the brain. The enamel changes we can see are simply the visible tip of a deeper metabolic shift.

Systemic Effects Beyond the Teeth

The same chemical interactions that create white streaks in enamel may also be occurring silently in the thyroid, kidneys, and nervous system, where we cannot see them with the naked eye. Fluorosis, therefore, should not be dismissed as cosmetic. It is the body’s way of signaling that fluoride exposure has reached a level capable of altering normal cellular activity. The teeth are the dashboard light, and once they show a warning, the rest of the system deserves inspection.

Topical Fluoride: Still a Trusted Ally

Fluoride that stays on the tooth surface remains one of dentistry’s most effective tools. Toothpaste, varnish, and sealants all work topically to harden enamel and prevent decay. The question today is not whether fluoride works, but how much and how it is delivered. In the 1950s, when toothpaste was rare, water fluoridation helped communities reduce cavities. Now, with widespread fluoride toothpaste, professional varnish, and better nutrition, mass ingestion may no longer add much benefit and could increase total exposure unnecessarily. Modern prevention should be targeted rather than universal ingestion.

illness should manage intake carefully.

5. Are fluoride-removing filters expensive? Not really. Reverse-osmosis systems cost about $150–300 with annual filter changes, and smaller countertop models start near $50. For families with infants or chronic illness, it is a practical safeguard.

6. How can I find out if my water has fluoride? Check your city’s annual water report or the CDC’s “My Water’s Fluoride” website. If you use a private well, have it tested, since natural levels vary widely.

7. Does bottled water contain fluoride? Some brands do and others do not. Always read the label. For baby formula, most pediatricians suggest non-fluoridated bottled or filtered water.

Fluoride

Practical Questions People Are Asking About

1. If fluoride helps teeth, why are people suddenly worried about it? Because scientists are now examining how swallowed fluoride affects other organs besides teeth. Fluoride is beneficial in small amounts, but it can accumulate in bones and tissues. Researchers are exploring its possible influence on the brain, thyroid, and kidneys. The goal is balance, not elimination.

2. How can parents protect their children without overdoing fluoride? Use toothpaste properly: rice-sized for toddlers, pea-sized for preschoolers, and teach them to spit, not swallow. Professional fluoride varnish and sealants are safe and stay on the teeth. When preparing baby formula, alternate between fluoridated and low-fluoride bottled or filtered water. Good brushing and diet remain the best cavity prevention.

3. Is fluoridated water safe during pregnancy? Pregnancy is a sensitive time for brain and organ development. Expectant mothers can use reverseosmosis or carbon filters for drinking water, mix bottled and filtered water to reduce total intake, and maintain gum health since inflammation during pregnancy can affect the baby. Lowering ingestion is a reasonable precaution, not an alarm.

4. What about adults with kidney or thyroid conditions? People with reduced kidney function clear fluoride more slowly, so it can accumulate. Those with thyroid disorders may also be more sensitive. Choose filtered or non-fluoridated water when possible. Continue using fluoride toothpaste since it acts topically. Inform your doctor about local water fluoridation to help interpret labs. Fluoride is not automatically harmful, but those with chronic

8. What is the safest overall approach? Keep topical fluoride such as toothpaste, varnish, and sealants. Reevaluate systemic exposure during pregnancy, infancy, or chronic illness. Support new U.S.-based studies that measure real fluoride levels instead of relying on decades-old data. Fluoride’s value remains, but dose and delivery are what truly determine safety.

So, Does Fluoride Lower IQ?

The fair answer is that higher systemic fluoride exposure is associated with slightly lower IQ in many studies. At typical U.S. fluoridation levels, the data are still limited. Topical fluoride remains safe and effective. In short, keep fluoride on the teeth, not in the bloodstream.

A Final Word

Community water fluoridation was one of the great health achievements of the twentieth century. Yet children today already receive fluoride from toothpaste, varnish, and food. We can preserve its benefits while reducing unnecessary ingestion. Re-examining systemic fluoride is not anti-science; it is good science. Our responsibility is to use fluoride wisely, to protect both smiles and developing minds. Add Some Spring To Your Weight Loss Efforts

Did you know that sex hormones impact many weight-related processes? From metabolism and muscle mass to sleep patterns and food cravings, sex hormones are crucial pieces in the weight-loss puzzle.

If you’re concerned about trying hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the latest medical research supports that HRT is safe for almost all women and does not increase all-cause mortality.

Now, here’s how estrogen, progesterone and testosterone link to the battle of the bulge:

Sex Hormones Impact Sleep. Estrogen impacts the human thermostat and the resulting hot flashes and night sweats can wreak havoc on sleep. Pro-

gesterone, a sleep-promoting hormone, also diminishes through menopause.

Belly Fat Blooms. Even without weight gain, middle-aged bodies start changing shape. For women, declining estrogen causes fat to be stored in the belly, not thighs and backsides. And belly fat is bad. It produces toxins that interfere with insulin metabolism. The resulting drastic ebb and flow of blood sugar impacts appetite and energy levels and is associated with Type 2 diabetes.

Muscle Matters . It’s a physiological fact that muscle burns more calories than fat tissue does. This makes muscle mass a key factor in weight loss. But menopause messes with muscle – even if nutrition and exercise stay constant. Testosterone (yes, it’s found in females) decreases

Chiropractic Care For Your Child

Today, an increasing number of parents are turning to chiropractors to address their children’s everyday health concerns. Common issues like allergies, bed-wetting, asthma, colic, ear infections, stomach-aches, sore throats, colds, and numerous other childhood ailments prompt this growing trend as children undergo their developmental stages.

The primary objective of chiropractic care is to eliminate any interference that may disrupt the natural healing power flowing through the body. It is essential to grasp that chiropractors do not target specific diseases or conditions. Instead, the knowledge and expertise of a chiropractor are uti-

lized to examine the child’s spine for misalignments that may hinder nervous system function, consequently impacting overall bodily functions.

A frequently posed question to chiropractors is whether the chiropractic adjustment causes discomfort for the child. The unequivocal answer is no. Chiropractors specializing in pediatric care employ highly specific and gentle techniques tailored for children. Adjustments for very young children can be as subtle as a feather-light touch, often going unnoticed by the young patient.

Parents of children who have undergone regular chiropractic care often report witnessing improvements in behavior, attitude, sleeping habits, and an overall enhanced immune system. Chiropractic care for children establishes a robust foundation for family wellness. Throughout pregnancy, birth, and childhood, embracing the chiropractic lifestyle offers benefits for the greater health and well-being of both parents and children.

Furthermore, children of all ages actively participating in sports can also derive benefits from chiropractic care. It has played a pivotal role in minimizing injuries and aiding athletes in performing at their optimal level.

A Journey Of Healing

Elambert Richardson’s journey to founding Elon Roshell Day Spa & Health is a remarkable story of resilience, healing, and dedication to helping others. Richardson’s path began with a profound personal struggle and evolved into creating a sanctuary of well-being that includes innovative treatments like a unique salt cave.

Richardson, once a preschool teacher, faced a debilitating injury that altered the course of her life. Despite extensive physical therapy, her pain persisted, leading to depression and a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. Her doctor presented her with a stark choice: find a way to live or succumb to her condition. This critical moment propelled Richardson to seek healing beyond conventional methods.

Richardson shared another poignant aspect of her struggle: the hostile work environment that led to her depression and ultimately, PTSD. She recounts instances of mistreatment, including being ostracized by colleagues and subjected to demeaning messages. Despite enduring chronic pain and emotional distress, Richardson finds solace in helping others and is embarking on a journey of healing

by sharing her story.

A pivotal turning point came with her reading of “The Ministry of Healing,” a book that highlighted the therapeutic power of helping others. This revelation ignited her determination to overcome her depression and explore a career in healthcare. Richardson began volunteering at her children’s school, pursued higher education, and ultimately found her calling in massage therapy.

Overcoming Adversity

Richardson’s journey was further challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced her business to close for 15 months. During this time,

Medical Cannabis Use Rises Among Women

A wide range of opinions exists about cannabis use for medical or recreational use – from 100% supportive to completely against it. It’s very difficult to navigate the range of information in social media. What we do know, is that it is becoming more the “norm” in younger people, with sharp uptakes in women’s use in all age groups.

So, why are more women turning to cannabis? What products are trending? What are the perceived benefits of cannabis for women? Of this group, baby boomers seem particularly attracted to CBD products, including face and body creams and bath bombs. Improved health and wellness appear to be significant factors in the rise of cannabis use in popularity among women. In fact, many women are now using cannabis as a routine part of their self-care.

More women are turning to cannabis to relieve chronic pain, soothe aches and pains following a workout, alleviate depression and anxiety, improve sleep quality, and ease the symptoms associated with menopause.

Women are less likely to use pills for symptom-relief. One study reported that 71% of female cannabis

When It Comes To Grief, For Children, the Play Is the Thing

“I miss my mom. She had the best snuggles.”

Moments like that stay with you. Not just because they’re heartbreaking, but because they perfectly capture how young children grieve.

Children don’t grieve the way adults do. They move in and out of grief. A child may become quieter, more withdrawn or have emotional outbursts that seem to come out of

A six-year-old once ran up to me, said that sentence and then ran right back to play.

nowhere. This can feel confusing or even alarming to adults who may be sitting in their own grief all the time. But for children, this isn’t avoidance. It’s survival. Young brains are only able to process grief in pieces.

Many children also don’t yet have the language to describe or even understand what they’re feeling. Because of that, grief often shows up in behavior rather than words. One of the most

important things adults can do is remember that play is a child’s language. Through play, children tell us what they’re feeling without having to say it directly. Drawing, building, pretend play, dolls, puppets and imaginative storytelling all create a layer of safety and distance that allows kids to express big emotions in a way that feels manageable. Play also helps children develop healthy coping skills by identifying feelings, releasing them and learning that emotions can come and go.

In our children’s counseling room, shelves of action figures often become stand-ins for parents, siblings, grandparents, or best friends. I once asked a child to create his family using figurines during play therapy. Everyone in his life was represented as a superhero or a princess — except one parent who had little connection with him. That person was represented by a plain stick figure. That single choice told us more than words ever could.

Especially after the death of a parent, a child needs to know they are safe and secure. One of the first questions they have, even if they don’t ask it out loud, is: Who is going to take care of me now?

Children need to know who will pick them up, who will take them to school or the doctor and who will tuck them in at night. Keeping routines as consistent as possible helps restore a sense of safety when their world has been turned upside down.

What children need most from the adults in their lives is reassurance: that their feelings are normal, that it’s okay to talk about the person who died and that they are not alone. Modeling healthy grief by saying, “I miss her today and I feel sad,” teaches children that emotions are safe to express and don’t need to be hidden.

Many children are incredibly resilient and may not need ongoing counseling. But support, open conversations, play and consistency make a powerful difference. Sometimes, the most meaningful response to grief is simply listening and letting a child return to play when they’re ready.

Considering Neck Lift Surgery?

Reduce Signs of Aging and Treat Sagging Skin!

A neck lift can be performed for men and women of varying ages who are often frustrated by changes of the appearance of their neck and jawline. Depending on your age, a neck lift can be a short one-hour procedure to remove fat or a 3-hour procedure to remove fat, visible neck bands, and excess skin.

Neck Lift Surgery Can:

Remove Excess Skin (Cervicoplasty) • Liposuction to Remove Excess Fat

Remove or Alter Neck Muscles (Platysmaplasty)

Liposuction can be performed alone or with surgical removal of the fat under the chin through a small incision under the chin.

In patients with vertical bands in the neck, a platysmaplasty can be performed to reduce the appearance of the bands.

Sometimes a chin implant is recommended to improve the overall contour and help with excess skin.

Acupuncture A Promising Approach For Dental Pain Relief

Dental pain can range from mild discomfort to severe agony, often requiring immediate attention and relief. While traditional dental interventions are effective, some individuals seek alternative methods to manage pain. Acupuncture, a practice rooted in ancient Chinese medicine, has gained recognition as

a complementary therapy for dental pain. By understanding its principles and applications, individuals can make informed decisions regarding pain management options.

Understanding Acupuncture: Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of energy, known as Qi, along meridians. In dental pain management, acupuncturists focus on acupoints located around the face, jaw, and head region. By stimulating these points, acupuncture aims to rebalance the body’s energy and promote pain relief.

Dental Pain Relief Mechanisms: Acupuncture’s pain-relieving effects in dental procedures can be attributed to several mechanisms. Firstly, acupuncture stimulates the release

Psychiatric Disabilities and Employment

Employment, for most of us, has a practical and symbolic significance. Work is a mechanism used to provide basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing. Work often satisfies intangible needs as well. It offers structure, a way to meet people and an opportunity to contribute to society.

Unfortunately, those labeled mentally ill have in many cases not been able to benefit from employment. Obstacles occur for this group both as

individuals and in society. The unemployment rate among persons with severe psychiatric illness is estimated to be 85%.

There are employers who have a negative perception of work ability when a person experiences a mental illness. Many people fear or misunderstand symptoms of the illness.

The barriers on an individual level depend on the person’s limitations and the demands of a specific work setting. While it is necessary to take caution with generalizations, certain areas of functional limitations can occur.

There may be difficulty with duration of concentration, screening out environmental stimuli, managing time pressures and deadlines, initiating interpersonal contacts, and responding to negative feedback.

Although there are some barriers, many people successfully pursue employment. Some obstacles can be

Dental Health and Your Infant

Tooth decay is one of the most common chronic conditions of childhood in the United States. Untreated tooth decay can cause pain and infections that may lead to problems with eating, speaking, playing, and learning.

Even though your baby doesn’t have teeth, you should still clean his or her mouth. It makes for a good idea to get in the habit of cleaning your baby’s gums soon after birth. Although there will be a little fussing at first, your infant will get used to

having the mouth cleaned like other parts of their body. Many children grow to enjoy brushing their teeth as part of their daily routine.

When the teeth come into the mouth use a soft-bristled, infantsized toothbrush. Unless your dentist/ doctor recommends otherwise, start using toothpaste without fluoride. For children who are younger than three years, use only a “smear” of toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice) on the bristles of the toothbrush.

Follow these steps at least twice a day once after breakfast and once after the last feeding of the day.

Attraction

Between 3-9 months, your infant’s baby teeth will begin to erupt. The process usually starts with the lower two front teeth (incisors). The timing varies considerably among children. However, the order is very predictable.

After the four incisors come in on both the lower and upper jaw, the

Your Female Family’s Health

Your Footprint – Or Is It a Toe Print?

As we recently navigated February’s heart health month, learning a bit more about the status of women’s heart health, let’s explore how we can impact the most important people in the world – our family.

Why this matters is because death from heart disease, our #1 killer for women, requires education and awareness at every stage of a girl/woman’s life. Not simply baby boomers, but teenagers (and younger) who have a high level of chronic stress that impacts their hearts daily. This could lead to at least, 1.6 million years of a high-quality life, and boost the U.S. economy by $28 billion by 2040. As stated in the McKinsey Health Institute’s The State of Women’s Heart Health: a path to improved health and financial outcomes. Sadly, Black women have a higher risk and are more likely to experience earlier

deaths than other ethnicities.

Within the first few months of this year, the American Heart Association researchers project that almost 60% of women will have some form of cardiovascular disease by 2050. The rise in high blood pressure may be the main driver setting the stage for earlier symptoms than needed. The answer and solution? Each of us can be an example from our personal lifestyle choices for family to witness.

TCM For Epilepsy

For thousands of years, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been a therapeutic mainstay in China and is gaining increasing recognition in Europe and the United States. A growing number of individuals are seeking healthcare solutions from Chinese medicine and other Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) practices. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), approximately 38% of all adults, 44% of those aged 50-59, and 12% of children reported using CAM in 2007.

Notably, 24-44% of epilepsy patients are already incorporating CAM into their treatment regimens.

The ancient Chinese text, Huang Di Nei Jing, dating back over 2,000 years, mentions epilepsy. Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture are the primary modalities within TCM. Recent studies suggest promising results for epilepsy treatment using Chinese medicine therapies, including herbal medicines and acupuncture.

Traditional Chinese herbal remedies, deeply rooted in historical practices, have been employed for epilepsy treatment. For instance, Gastrodia’s root, known as tian ma, is a common remedy in China for epilepsy and other ailments. The traditional herbal formulation Bu-yang-huan-wu-tang has shown substantial improvement in refractory epilepsy cases, and open-label studies of Chinese herbal remedies like Qingyangsen and Zhenxianling indicate potential anticonvulsant effects with fewer side effects than standard antiepileptic drugs. In addition to herbal remedies,

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown nails (onychocryptosis) are the most common nail impairment. An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge or edges of the nail grows down and into the skin of the toe. Usually, toenails grow straight out. Sometimes, however, nail corners or sides dig painfully into the soft tissue of nail grooves, often leading to irritation, redness, and swelling. The big toe is the most common location for this condition, but other toes can also become affected. Some people are more prone to ingrown toenails. Ingrown toenails may be caused by the following:

• Improperly trimmed nails

• Heredity

• Shoe pressure; crowding of toes

• Repeated trauma to the feet from normal activities

The following symptoms may be present with ingrown toenails

• Pain

• Redness and swelling

• Drainage

• Odor

• Prominent skin tissue (proud flesh)

If you suspect an infection due to an ingrown toenail, immerse the foot in a warm saltwater soak, or a basin of soapy water, then apply an antiseptic and bandage the area.

People with diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, or other circulatory disorders must avoid any form of self-treatment and seek podiatric medical care as soon as possible.

Other “do-it-yourself” treatments, including any attempt to remove any part of an infected nail or the use of over-the-counter medications, should be avoided. Nail problems should be evaluated and treated by your podiatrist, who can diagnose the ailment, and then prescribe medication or another appropriate treatment.

When To Visit a Podiatrist

You should see a podiatrist immediately if any drainage or exces-

Cosmetic Dentistry

Who doesn’t want to look their best? Who doesn’t want a good-looking smile? Your family dentist is the key professional who can help you have a healthy bright smile you are happy with and others like to look at. Take the cosmetic dentistry self-assessment test.

1. Are my teeth as bright and white as I’d like them to be?

2. Are my teeth different colors?

3. Are my fillings and crowns showing their age? (And mine?)

4. Are my teeth uneven, crowded, overlapped, spaced, or crooked?

5. Are my gums healthy or are they

bleeding or receding?

6. Are any of my teeth loose or missing allowing the remaining teeth to shift position and changing my bite?

7. Do stains on my teeth refuse to come off with whitening toothpastes or even a hygienist cleaning and polishing?

8. Is my bridgework chipped, loose, or no longer match the other teeth?

9. Is my removable partial denture wearing out? Are the teeth chipped or worn? Does it fit as well as it used to?

10. Do I like my smile? Do others?

Your dentist can offer many treatment options to help make your smile all it could be. Modern techniques, new and improved materials and advanced technologies can achieve superior results for all ages. Every smile can be improved.

Your unique situation and dental needs will be determined after your dentist does a comprehensive dental exam and has a face-to-face personal consultation and discussion to understand your special desires and expectations.

Over-the-Counter Medicines and Drug Interactions

Submitted by Kensington Pharmacy

Every day, millions of Americans use over-the-counter medicines for relief from headache or arthritis pain, coughs and colds, flu, and upset stomach. These over-the-counter medicines are effective, widely available, convenient, and cost-effective.

It is important to treat all of your medicines seriously and read all of the instructions carefully. This can help you avoid problems that may occur with all medications, including over-the-counter medicines.

Drug-drug interactions happen when a drug interacts, or interferes, with another drug. This changes the way one or both of the drugs act in the body, or causes unexpected side effects. The drugs involved can be prescription medications or over-thecounter medicines. They can even be

things like vitamins and herbal products.

Sometimes when two drugs interact, the overall effect of one or both of the drugs may be greater than desired. For example, both aspirin and blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin®) help to prevent blood clots from forming. Using these medications together may cause excessive bleeding.

Other times, the overall effect of one or both of the drugs may be less than desired. For example, certain antacids can prevent many medicines from being absorbed into the bloodstream. If this happens, the medicine may not work as well or it may not work at all.

Drug-food interactions happen when a prescription medication or over-the-counter medicine interacts, or interferes, with something you eat

ferently to nutrition and exercise over time. What worked in your 20s or 30s may no longer feel effective in your 40s or 50s. This isn’t failure—it’s physiology. Supporting women’s health means adapting care strategies as the body evolves, not forcing outdated expectations.

Preventive care plays a vital role in long-term wellness. Prioritizing balanced nutrition, movement that builds strength without exhaustion, restorative sleep, and stress management helps protect heart health, bone density, mental well-being, and metabolic function. medical care, women are better equipped to maintain vitality and resilience.

Perhaps most importantly, women deserve to feel heard. Health concerns should never be minimized or brushed aside. Asking questions, seeking clarity, and advocating for personalized care are powerful steps toward better health outcomes.

Women’s health is not about chasing perfection or quick fixes. It’s about understanding your body, honoring its changes, and supporting it with informed, compassionate care at every stage of life.

estoring H ealtH

Stress acts as an accelerant for hormonal decline in both men and women. Whether you are facing menopause or its male equivalent, andropause, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) offers a path back to equilibrium. By using the lowest effective dose of natural hormones, we can optimize your health safely.

• For Women: Estrogen deficiency drives the majority of menopausal symptoms. Targeted treatment with estrogen, progesterone, and sometimes testosterone can eliminate night sweats, improve libido, and restore a profound sense of wellbeing.

• For Men: Low testosterone is a systemic health risk, not just a matter of sexual performance. It is linked

From Page 18

to higher mortality, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Restoring testosterone can reverse muscle loss and fatigue while protecting your long-term cardiovascular health.

The “Silent” Sluggishness: Hypothyroidism

Often underdiagnosed, an underactive thyroid can make every other health issue feel insurmountable. Addressing hypothyroidism is frequently the “missing piece” in resolving persistent fatigue and mental fog.

Your Next Steps

If these symptoms resonate with you, don’t settle for “just getting older.” Engage with a physician who specializes in these vital areas of metabolic and hormonal health to design a plan tailored to your biology.

cosmetic procedures, i.e. whitening (bleaching) are mainly just that – for esthetics only – but other cosmetic procedures – orthodontics (braces, teeth straightening) have very significant effects on the overall health of your teeth, gums, and occlusion (bite) for a lifetime. Most dental insurances do not cover cosmetic procedures. Dental insurance usually covers only things that are decayed, infected, or broken. Read your insurance coverage carefully and

be prepared to pay out of pocket for uncovered cosmetic procedures. It is definitely worth it to get a healthy, bright and appealing smile you are not ashamed of. Go the extra mile and see your family dentist for more than a cleaning and cavity check. Ask what modern cosmetic dentistry can do for you. Who doesn’t want to look their best? A good looking smile can be yours with the help of your family dentist and other dental professionals.

Clinical Applications: Acupuncture has shown promise in various dental conditions, including toothaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, post-operative pain, and dental anxiety. For toothaches, acupuncture can provide temporary relief by reducing inflammation and desensitizing the affected area. In TMJ disorders, acupuncture can help alleviate muscle tension and promote relaxation, reducing pain and improving jaw function. Additionally, acupuncture has been used as an adjunct therapy to manage post-operative dental pain and as a calming technique for

of devices have expanded, and the size and cost of the machines have dramatically diminished. Today, the most common device in North America produces a ‘radial’ pressure wave (EPAT, by Curamedix). This type of wave is most effective with soft tissue; chronically inflamed ligaments around joints, tendons, and peripheral nerves (Morton’s Neuroma in the foot). ‘Focused’ shockwave (FSW) is similar to the original device but lower intensity. It is most effective where soft tissue is anchored to bone; chronic inflamed areas of tendon or liga-

eliminated or reduced with simple workplace accommodations. Minor work modifications in work patterns or interpersonal communication can make a tremendous difference in utilization of job skills.

Often these modifications are very simple and may be free. Included are some examples to illustrate this point. Arranging for work requests to be in writing if verbal instructions are difficult; providing positive feedback along with comments for needed improvements and permitting flexibility in scheduling once or twice a month to permit attendance at doctor’s or therapy appointments are examples of workplace accommodations for persons with a psychiatric diagnosis. patients experiencing dental anxiety.

Individualized Treatment:

Acupuncture treatment for dental pain is highly individualized. Acupuncturists consider the patient’s specific dental condition, pain severity, and medical history to develop a personalized treatment plan. The number of sessions required may vary, depending on the individual’s response and the nature of the dental issue being addressed.

Acupuncture presents a promising alternative for dental pain relief, offering a holistic approach that complements traditional dental interventions. By stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms, acupuncture can effectively reduce dental pain, improve oral health, and enhance overall well-being. Individuals seeking additional pain management options can consider acupuncture as a complementary therapy in consultation with their dental healthcare providers.

ment ‘insertion’ to bone (chronic plantar fasciitis, insertional Achilles/peroneal/ tibial tendonitis in the foot). These devices are tabletop in size and require no anesthesia, and treatment is delivered over 3 -5 sessions lasting 10-15 minutes with intensity adjustable to the patient’s tolerance during each session. Devices from Curamedix/Storz from Germany are the devices used in most research studies in the US, and their effectiveness in treating chronic MSK problems is impressive. Combining both EPAT and FSW brings the best results.

many programs. Following an assessment of a person’s skills and interests, supported employment services provide a job coach.

When the person has the skills to work, and an appropriate job is available, the person applies for the position. If hired, the job coach can help with the transition into the workforce.

As the person becomes more comfortable with the job, the job coach reduces involvement. This is still an option that may enhance the opportunity for the employee to sustain successful employment.

Other people will need no special workplace modifications or supported employment. They will perform well with support from family and friends who say job well done.

she also contracted the virus, requiring oxygen therapy. Remarkably, this treatment provided significant relief from her chronic pain. “The oxygen was so good. I mean, that was the first thing that, really like, I had no pain,” she recounted.

A Vision Of Wellness

After her recovery, Richardson experienced a life-changing dream that inspired her to create a comprehensive health and wellness center in Calvert County. This vision became Elon Roshell Day Spa & Health, featuring an array of services designed to promote natural health and wellness, including an oxygen bar, hyperbaric chamber, and a signature salt cave.

The salt cave is a central feature of Richardson’s spa. Constructed with real salt bricks, the cave offers a serene environment where visitors can experience the benefits of inhaling medical-grade salt. These benefits range from improved skin health and respiratory relief to overall relaxation. “It’s good for your skin. If you have

From Page 27

eczema, it’s good for different skin conditions. Also your lungs. For me, I have asthma. And after having this, I haven’t had to really carry my inhaler,” Richardson explained.

Elon Roshell Day Spa & Health offers a variety of wellness services, including massage therapy, facials, waxing, oxygen therapy, red light therapy, infrared sauna, and ionic foot baths. This holistic approach addresses both physical and mental well-being, providing a comprehensive healing experience.

Elambert Richardson also hosts a weekly Wellness Wednesday event at the spa. For just $25, attendees can experience the salt cave and participate in free small group health and wellness events. These events, largely led by Jeanette Umstead, a health coach at the spa, focus on Bible-based teachings of the 8 laws of health. These teachings emphasize principles such as a plant-based diet and the importance of rest, believed to contribute to long lifespan and overall well-being when followed.

sive redness is present around the toenail. Also, if a short trial of home treatment has not resulted in improvement of the condition, see your podiatrist. If you have diabetes or poor circulation, you should seek immediate treatment at the first signs of an ingrown toenail, as it can lead to more severe complications.

Diagnosis and Treatment

A podiatrist will remove the ingrown portion of the nail and may prescribe a topical or oral medication to treat the infection. If ingrown nails are a chronic problem, your podiatrist can perform a procedure to permanently prevent ingrown nails. The corner of the nail that ingrows, along with the matrix or root of that piece of nail, are removed by use of a chemical, a laser, or other methods.

first molars erupt. They are followed by canines (eye teeth) and then the second molars further back in the mouth. Most children have a full set of 20 baby teeth by age 2 or 3.

Teething may make your child irritable or fussy and may cause restlessness, drooling or loss of appetite.

You can ease your child’s teething discomfort by

• Giving him or her a hard or cold teething ring /frozen washcloth to chew on

• Applying pressure over the gums by rubbing them with a clean finger

users said they’ve decreased purchasing over-the-counter medication, and 35% revealed a decline in prescription drug use. Women are more likely to use cannabis in edible form vs. smoked form.

Some cautionary notes: Smoking clearly can damage lungs. Consuming edibles is safer, but new patients should take low doses to determine the effects. Cannabis today is about 10 times the potency of products of the 1970’s and 1980’s, and too much too soon may result in fall risks or

acute anxiety, sometimes even sending patients to the emergency room. Any cannabis dispensary should be well educated on their products and answer any questions you may have. Patients should take time to explain what they hope to gain from cannabis and ask to be pointed toward products that may be helpful for you. Budtenders who are well educated on product are able to steer customers to appropriate strains and forms of cannabis.

or drink.

Drug-disease interactions happen when a prescription medication or over-the-counter medicine interacts, or interferes, with a disease or condition that you have. For example, decongestants, which are found in many cold remedies, may cause your blood pressure to go up. This may be dangerous for people with high blood pressure.

Your risk of having a drug interaction depends in large part on how many medicines you are taking. Fortunately most of these interactions can be prevented. By taking a few simple steps, you can protect your health and avoid serious problems.

Read the labels of all over-thecounter medicines. Look for the section called “Drug Interaction Precaution.” If you don’t see it, don’t assume that no interactions will occur. Read all the information carefully to be sure.

From Page 45

Children usually give up sucking habits on their own by the time they are 3-4 years old. If they stop the habit at this age, the shape of the jaw is usually not affected. The teeth should grow in normally. However, some children find the sucking habit hard to break. Children who are still sucking on a pacifier, finger or thumb when their permanent (adult) teeth start to come in are more likely to have bite problems.

To help an older child break a sucking habit, it is important to explain clearly why the habit can be harmful. Be supportive and encouraging, and praise the child’s efforts to end the habit.

If the child sucks a finger or pacifier because of a stressful situation, it can be very helpful to address the source of the stress.

Tell all of the doctors and pharmacists you visit about all of the prescription medications and overthe-counter medicines you use. Use a Personal Medication Record to write down information about the medi-

weight loss process. It also promotes bone strength and tissue healing. Vitamin B-12 has an important function for blood cell development and nerve function. Iron is important for red blood cell development and the ability of the blood to deliver oxygen to the organs of the body.

Other supplements may include Vitamin D that helps with calcium absorption and bone strength. Zinc will help the immune system and wound healing. The exact form of the vitamin and the amount required is usually determined by conversations in the office visits.

From Page 49

cines that you use. Be sure to include those you take every day as well as those you use only once in a while. If you use vitamins or herbal products, be sure to write them down, too.

Before taking any new medication, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. Ask whether it is safe to take the new medicine with other prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, or herbal products that you are taking. Ask if there are any foods, drinks, or medications you should avoid while taking the new medicine. Never use prescription medicines that belong to another person, even if that person seems to have the same health problem you have.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice on over-the-counter medicines. Your doctor or pharmacist will help you choose the medicine that best meets all of your health needs. If you can, buy your over-the-counter medicines at the same pharmacy where you have your prescriptions filled. That way, the pharmacist can check your records to see if the overthe-counter medicines you buy could interact with the prescription medications you take.

Post-op Surveillance

Once the weight loss procedure is performed, there is routine monitoring of blood vitamin and micronutrient levels every 6-12 months. Based on the results, patients may have their vitamin regimen adjusted in order to maintain appropriate nutrition. Also, the frequency of monitoring may be adjusted based on results.

The results from bariatric surgery are based on using the procedures as a tool and a commitment to lifestyle changes that promote weight loss and healthy living.

acupuncture, another TCM practice, is utilized for epilepsy treatment. Case reports demonstrate the potential efficacy of acupuncture in epilepsy patients, and animal studies suggest it may inhibit epileptic seizures and hippocampal cell death induced by kainic acid.

A Norwegian trial involving 29 pa-

tients with intractable epilepsy revealed a reduction in seizure frequency in both acupuncture and sham acupuncture groups, though statistical significance was not achieved. The combination of herbal medicine and acupuncture is often recommended for epilepsy treatment, with a typical duration of 3-6 months depending on the individual’s condition.

This is where a functional medicine approach becomes valuable. Functional medicine focuses on identifying underlying causes of illness and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal. By combining traditional evidence-based medicine with lifestyle medicine, nutrition, and mental health support, providers can create more personalized and effective treatment plans.

Integrating primary care and mental health services under one practice also creates a more supportive and convenient experience for patients. Individuals are able to discuss both their physical and emotional health in one environment where their care is coordinated and personalized.

Healthcare should not feel rushed or fragmented. Patients deserve providers who listen, evaluate the full picture of their health, and work collaboratively with them toward sustainable wellness.

As healthcare continues to evolve, the future of medicine will increasingly focus on connection between the mind and body, between providers and patients, and between prevention and healing. When we treat the whole person rather than just the symptoms, we create an opportunity for true and lasting wellness.

At Calmaia Minds Health and Wellness, our mission is simple: to help patients heal, grow, and feel their best in mind, body, and spirit.

The ripple effect of my health choices for my daughter and granddaughters to see is huge but not spoken about. The American Heart Association’s data shows a momentous trend: women’s health behaviors directly influence the CV outcomes of their family members, specifically daughters and sisters. It revealed that when women prioritize heart-healthy behaviors, their immediate family members are 40% more likely to adopt the same, within a year!

Eyes are on us, ladies, since we make up half the population in the workforce and community, and make decisions for over 80% of a family’s medical options. Our well-being is critical for others to see and sets a cascading effect in motion. What if:

• Your nieces see you drop some lavender on their mom to help her relax and sleep better? Or heartsupportive oils like orange, cypress,

or ylang ylang?

• What if your daughter saw you do Box Breathing while navigating a touch conversation?

• Your granddaughter knows you value friendship time, and you set dates accordingly?

• Your sister sees you pray in the morning while on vacation, and knows you do this faithfully, for your health?

• Your children are regularly part of a volunteer community passion project together?

• Your granddaughters see you give their moms a shoulder massage and knows they are always calmer afterward!

And so, your legacy travels through the years, seen by many, solidifying how choices, intention, and love, create the space for healthier hearts and robust lives!

surgical sites and suturing all the incisions. Then you’ll be taken to a recovery room where you can relax and take time to wake up from the anesthesia.

Your Mouth Is Connected To Nearly Every System In the Body

Most people think of dentistry as separate from the rest of their health. In reality, your mouth is connected to every system in the body — including digestion, airway health, inflammation, metabolism, immune function and even musculoskeletal balance.

The oral cavity is the beginning of the digestive tract. When bacteria are imbalanced or inflammation is present in the gums, the body responds systemically. Research continues to show links between the oral cavity and inflammation, diabetes and insulin control, chronic fatigue, immune system function, cardiac health, and conditions like Alzheimers.

Airway health is equally important. A restricted airway during sleep can contribute to snoring, poor oxygenation, disrupted sleep cycles, weight gain and metabolic imbalance. Addressing inflammation and airway function in the mouth can positively influence sleep quality, oxygen levels and overall energy.

Jaw alignment and bite instability may also contribute to neck pain, back pain, migraines and chronic tension. Tooth pain and sensitivity can decrease job performance and life enjoyment. Dental discomfort and high dental anxiety often keep people from seeking care, yet there are solutions available to relieve pain comfortably and support patients who experience fear or stress in the dental chair.

Material choices matter. Bio compatible all natural porcelain crowns and porcelain implants provide metal-free options for patients seeking holistic solutions. Plant and herbal cleanings free of toxins available.

Your smile is the one investment that shows up all day long. A healthy beautiful smile can give you more energy, confidence, opportunities and longevity. When patients restore their smiles, they often notice improvements not just in appearance, but in posture, communication, self-esteem and overall presence.

Holistic dentistry looks beyond the surface of the teeth. When the mouth is healthier, patients often report improved sleep, clearer thinking, better digestion, fewer headaches and increased overall vitality.

Oral wellness is not cosmetic. It is foundational.
