It is a real privilege to welcome you to the first-ever Yorkshire Farming Conference. This is a proud moment for the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, as we bring all of our charitable work together in one place for the very first time.

Our theme Every Field, Every Farmer captures the spirit of what today is all about. Whether you farm on a large or small scale, whether you are just starting out or have been farming for decades, this conference is for you.

An Information Point is located in the entrance foyer of The Halls at The Great Yorkshire Events Centre. The Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS) also has a trade stand in the Trade Show at Stand No. 32, where you can:

Dedicated Networking Opportunities

You are invited to meet the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s farming networks at dedicated networking get-togethers during the day. They are chances to connect with likeminded people and find out more about what other opportunities the networks offer, year-round. These will be held in the Networking Area (see map) as follows:

BASIS & NRoSO Points

Delegates can claim BASIS & NRoSO points at the YAS trade stand (Stand No. 32). We plan to use the new BASIS mobile app for point allocation, so please ensure this is downloaded to your phone in advance.

Should there be any issues with the new system on the day, the team will record your details manually and will endeavour to register your points afterwards using the previous process.

There is no need to book a place. Your entry ticket allows access to all sessions. Simply turn up and take a seat.

7 year Itch: Is UK agriculture more in control since Brexit?

This keynote debate, delivered by the Future Farmers of Yorkshire, tackles a pressing question facing British farming today: has Brexit given agriculture more control, or has it reduced its influence? Opposing sides go head-to-head in an Oxford-style debate, putting forward their arguments for and against the motion: ‘This house believes that British Agriculture is more in control since Brexit’.

What to Expect

The debate follows a traditional Oxford-style format: opening remarks, contributions from the floor and closing statements from both sides, with the audience casting votes, both at the start and at the end of the session.

Keynote Address: James Rebanks

James Rebanks, best-selling author and internationally respected farmer, will share his unique perspective on farming, food and the countryside.

Drawing on his life in the Lake District and the powerful stories told in his books,The Shepherd’s Life and English Pastoral, James will talk about how he and his family farm today.

For the final 15 minutes, James will open up the session to a Q&A and will be signing copies of his books at the Kemps stand (TS3) immediately after.

James’ family has lived and worked in the Lake District for more than 600 years. An advocate and practitioner of farming with nature, James is a graduate of Oxford University and has worked as an expert advisor to UNESCO on sustainable tourism.

From Soil to Start-Up

Four innovative farmers explore how farming businesses can evolve beyond traditional models, building successful ventures alongside core operations. Chaired by the co-founder of a farm shop and food emporium, the panel includes a Dales farmer combining tourism and online content, and sisters running an award-winning East Yorkshire arable farm and children’s nursery.

Examples of successful farm diversification, as panellists reflect honestly on risk, workload and balancing innovation with core farming. Expect insights into branding, engagement and building viable rural ventures, along with lessons learned.

Behind the Scenes of Showing

Hosted by the Women In Farming Network, this lively session offers a behind-the-scenes look at the world of livestock showing. From judging and preparation to the friendships and pride that make it worthwhile, we hear first-hand from experienced livestock exhibitors, judges and show organisers. The session will highlight the opportunities the sector can offer through the showing world and how you can get involved.

What to Expect

Insights into what judges really look for, guidance on getting involved as a steward, volunteer or competitor, and anecdotes of memorable mishaps and ring-side humour. It explores why women often drive shows behind the scenes and reflects honestly on the barriers and challenges they may face in the show ring.

Presented by the Yorkshire Rural Support Network, this is a fresh, practical take on farm safety and mental wellbeing – no lectures, just real stories and actionable tools. Framed around both physical risks and mental health, it combines lived experience from farmers with expert insight, highlighting the realities of life on the farm in a frank, peer-led and positive way.

What to Expect

This conversation-led panel puts farmers’ voices at the centre, sharing experiences of farm safety incidents and health challenges. Through case studies of accidents and health scares, we will explore mental health in agriculture, highlighting recovery, resilience, peer support and practical lessons learned from real-world situations.

The Farmer’s Role in the Big Food Picture

Farmers sit at the heart of the food system connecting land, people, markets and communities, yet their role is often misunderstood or undervalued. This panel from the Yorkshire Food, Farming and Rural Network brings together voices from retail, farming, policy and community leadership to explore what it really means to be ‘in the middle’ of today’s food system, and how farm businesses can turn that position into strength.

What to Expect

An interactive session looking at the farmer’s role from field to fork, focusing on examples of working with retailers, processors and customers, discussing how policy affects decisions on the ground and exploring changing consumer expectations around sustainability, provenance and cultural diets. We look at how stronger links between farms and local communities can support both food security and rural livelihoods.

How the Society Can Benefit You

The Yorkshire Farming Conference is organised by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society, a registered charity working year-round to support farmers and promote agriculture.

Formed in 1837 for the purpose of hosting the Great Yorkshire Show, the Society has widened its objectives as a supporting force for the industry.

Today, the Yorkshire Agricultural Society stands proudly at the heart of Yorkshire’s farming, food and countryside, with His Majesty King Charles III as its Patron.

The Society spends circa £500,000 a year supporting and promoting agriculture and rural industries across Yorkshire and the North of England.

This investment is possible because of the funds raised by the Great Yorkshire Show, and the Society’s family of businesses on the Showground. Profits raised by Fodder, The Great Yorkshire Events Centre, Pavilions of Harrogate and Harrogate Caravan Park are invested back into the charity.

Farmer Scientist Network

Scientists, representatives of governmental organisations and farmers who work to find new ways in which science and technology can find solutions and underpin innovation in agriculture.

Future Farmers of Yorkshire

A forward-thinking network of more than 1,000 farmers, vets and industry professionals who enjoy a platform for debate, networking, training and bursary opportunities to encourage professional development.

Women In Farming Network

A network of rural women providing opportunities to learn from each other, build contacts and support and empower fellow members, including at its flagship Autumn Gathering.

Yorkshire Food, Farming and Rural Network

A group of rural stakeholders who champion the needs of farming, agri-food, rural businesses and rural communities, enabling them to become more resilient, competitive and sustainable.

Yorkshire Rural Support Network

A steering group of farmers and a partnership of farming organisations, charities and voluntary agencies that promote and provide sources of help to those who live in farming and rural communities. Its Yorkshire Farmers Gathering tackles rural isolation among the over 50s.

Grants & Bursaries

Grants are available to support and promote agriculture, rural and allied industries. The Society sponsors Nuffield Farming Scholarships, supporting farming people to explore cutting edge industry developments. Bursaries to attend industry events are offered by Future Farmers of Yorkshire.

Goodall Agri-Development Pathway

A fully-funded training programme supporting the development of farming’s next generation, thanks to the legacy of the late-Mary Goodall. It helps younger people develop their skills and experience and includes a European study trip. Applications for the 2027 programme open in the Spring.

Education

The Society runs fun, hands-on educational events for schoolchildren to fire imaginations about the countryside. Each year, primary school children attend Countryside Days and Apple Day. The Society offers free training for teachers to help take lessons outdoors, funds visits to working farms with Country Trust, inspires green fingers with the Schools Veg Box Competition and, at the Great Yorkshire Show, hosts the family-friendly Discovery Zone.
