A LEVELS + MIX | 8

Course types Overview, entry requirements and curriculum areas Unsure which type of course is right for you? Here is a short overview of the different course types we offer, along with typical entry requirements and a list of subject areas available:

A Levels A Level + A Level + A Level +

Academic Development

A Levels are Level 3 qualifications, have an academic approach to subjects and are mainly assessed by written exams. You will usually take three A Level subjects as well as an Academic Development option – and with a wide range to choose from, almost any combination of subjects is possible. Many young people who study A Levels with us go on to follow a traditional university route.

MIX A LEVEL + A LEVEL +

MIX

Academic + Development

Mix courses are Level 3 qualifications and are equivalent to one A Level. In our Mix programme, you can combine two A Levels and one Vocational course - offering a more flexible and personalised learning experience tailored to career aspirations and academic goals. Whether you want to follow a traditional university route or pursue an industry-specific career, this pathway will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge. You will take two A Level subjects and one ‘Mix’ subject, assessed primarily by course work/practical assessments and exams, as well as an Academic Development option.

Broader Career Opportunities

Competitive Edge

With a combination of A Levels and Mix courses, you will gain a well-rounded education that opens up career paths, whether you’re looking to go to university, enter the workforce, or pursue further professional training.

The combination of academic rigour and vocational expertise is highly regarded by employers and universities, giving you a unique advantage in the competitive job market.

Practical Experience Vocational qualifications focus on real-world skills, while A Levels provide in-depth academic knowledge, giving you the best of both worlds.

Personalised Learning The York College Mix programme allows you to tailor your studies based on your interests, strengths and future career plans, ensuring you can maximise your potential.

Entry requirements Our general entry requirements for A Levels and Mix programmes are a minimum of four GCSE subjects at grade 5 or above, plus English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above. Individual A Level subjects will have specific requirements in addition to these, so check subject course descriptions for further information. More detailed entry requirement information is available on the course pages of our website, as well as at Open Events, Taster Days and (when requested) Guidance Discussions. Please speak to us to discuss your individual circumstances.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a highly valued Level 3 qualification offered by AQA. It is equivalent to half an A Level and provides you with the opportunity to explore a topic you are passionate about, often linked to your future university or career aspirations. Students will be given the opportunity to enrol onto the EPQ course in the summer term of the first year of A Levels. The EPQ is widely recognised by universities and employers as it demonstrates key academic and professional skills, including independent research, critical thinking and effective communication. It carries UCAS points and is an excellent way to enhance your post-16 study programme and stand out in competitive applications.

V Levels are new, applied post-16 qualifications designed to bridge the gap between academic depth and hands-on technical skills. These new courses are currently in the final stages of being finalised by the Government and we are hoping to offer them from the 2027/28 academic year; however, this is subject to final approval and implementation timelines. Likely areas are: ◗ Digital ◗ Education & Early Years ◗ Finance & Accounting Please check our website regularly for the latest information and updates on course availability.

T LEVELS | 12

T Levels T Levels have been developed in collaboration with employers, so that the content of the course meets the needs of industry and prepares you for work, an Apprenticeship or higher-level study. One T Level is equivalent to three A Levels and carries UCAS points. T Levels combine classroom learning with practical, on-the-job experience: you spend 80% of your time in college learning theory and technical knowledge, and 20% on an industry placement, giving you real-world skills. T Levels are perfect if you have a specific career goal, as they give you the experience and skills you need to get a head start in your chosen area. T Levels are full-time study programmes, so it is not possible to study more than one at a time, or to combine them with other study programmes.

Entry requirements T Levels are Level 3 qualifications with exact entry requirements varying according to the course. Most T Levels will require a grade 4 or above in English and Maths. Please refer to the individual curriculum T Level course pages for details. More detailed entry requirement information is available on the course pages of our website, as well as at Open Events, Taster Days and (when requested) Guidance Discussions. Please speak to us to discuss your individual circumstances.

YOUR STUDENT EXPERIENCE | 22

Your student experience Life at York College isn’t just about what happens in the classroom: we offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities across the College to help you make the most of your time with us. Many activities are led by our passionate Student Experience & Activities Team, who are here to support you and ensure your experience with us is a positive one.

Your student life Our ENRICH programme is your chance to try something new, push yourself and discover what you’re really passionate about. From joining clubs and societies to competing in competitions, hearing from inspiring guest speakers, or picking up a hobby you’ve never tried before, there’s something for everyone. Along the way, you’ll build real skills, grow in confidence and meet people you might never have crossed paths with otherwise. And the benefits go further than that. These experiences genuinely set you apart; whether you’re writing your UCAS personal statement, updating your CV, or walking into a job interview. Employers and universities don’t just want grades; they want to see who you are beyond them.

Look out for information about our Clubs & Societies - maybe you’ll be our next Karaoke superstar or Chess Grandmaster? Throughout the year, we mark important national days and celebrations – from Black History Month and LGBT+ History Month to International Men’s Day and Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day – with events and activities that bring our College community together. We’re passionate about giving students a platform to showcase their talents, champion the causes they care about and celebrate the things that make them who they are. Volunteering, whether within College or out in the wider community, is one of the most rewarding things our students can do. We’re committed to creating meaningful opportunities for students to make a real difference in the lives of others, while enriching their own along the way.

Outside of my course, I’m part of the Student Union, which has opened me up to more opportunities and also helped me to talk to more students. I feel like it’s given me more skills that will help me at uni or in future jobs.

We carry out live projects and work with external partners, for example on realistic emergency scenario set designs that are populated with real-life first responders. Students also put on pantomimes that are seen – and loved – by hundreds of schoolchildren ever year.

Much of our work takes place outside the traditional classroom environment. We have our own black box theatre and a 360-degree immersion room, where we create worlds, in both analogue and digital. Our music students host regular gigs across the city and beyond. The College is our springboard, but the world is our stage.

Our music department doesn’t just teach music: it shows you what to do with it. Whatever type of music you’re into, it helps you navigate that complex landscape with elegance and grace. You’ll learn how to use our state-of-the-art recording studios as well as our instrument suite. From day one, you’ll be warmly welcomed in a music community, studying alongside around 60 full-time musicians, all keen to share their craft. We even have our own in-house record label, 54 Records.

To train at the highest level, you need the right equipment. That’s why our dancers rehearse in mirrored rooms with harlequin floors. Our music recording studio and theatre sound and lighting desks are what you’ll use in the industry.
