APPRENTICESHIPS – EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW York College & University Centre currently works with more than 1,000 organisations, guiding and supporting them with apprenticeships. We’re here to help you every step of the way. We listen carefully to current and prospective employers to fully understand their needs and manage the delivery of their apprenticeships to ensure the best benefits to their business. Contact our Apprenticeships Team to discover how apprenticeships can support your organisation’s recruitment and training development plans.
BENEFITS OF APPRENTICESHIPS TO BUSINESSES: Cost Effective Talent Development - taking on an apprentice means lower recruitment costs while they’re in training. This allows businesses to invest in developing talent for the future at a fraction of the cost.
£
Tailored Skills Development apprenticeships provide employers with an opportunity to shape an apprentice’s skill set to the specific needs of their business. This ensures the apprentice is well-trained in the exact methods and processes relevant to the business.
Increased Productivity & Innovation - apprentices often bring new ideas and fresh thinking to the business, and are typically more open to adopting new working practices to increase productivity.
Improved Employee Retention - by providing training and career development from the ground up, apprentices often feel more valued and loyal to the business which can result in higher retention rates. This reduces turnover and the costs associated with hiring and training new employees.
Strong Reputation & Brand businesses that hire apprentices demonstrate a commitment to skills development and community engagement. This can enhance the business’s reputation as an employer of choice, attracting a broader pool of talent.
Employers with a payroll of over £3 million are referred to as levy payers as they contribute to the Apprenticeship Levy to fund their apprenticeships, and are also able to transfer some of their levy funds to other employers to support with apprenticeships. From 1st August 2026, levy funds expire after 12 months and if levy funds run out, then the apprenticeship will be funded on a co-investment basis, whereby the government funds 75% of the cost of each apprenticeship programme and the employer pays the remaining 25%. Employers not paying the levy (those with a payroll under £3 million) are known as non-levy payers and apprenticeships are funded on a co-investment basis, whereby the government funds 95% of the cost of each apprenticeship programme and the employer pays the remaining 5%. From 1st August 2026, the government will waive the 5% contribution if you recruit an apprentice aged 16-24. All employers are responsible for paying the apprentice’s wage and there is an incentive, of up to £1,000, for recruiting an apprentice aged 16-18 or 19-24 with an EHCP provided by their local authority, or if they have been in the care of their local authority. In addition there is a new incentive of up to £2,000 for non-levy payers that take on a 16-24 year apprentice as a new employee (must have joined employer in previous 3 months) for apprenticeship starts after 1st October 2026. It is a government requirement that all employers set up a Digital Apprenticeship Service (DAS) account to access funding for apprentices, regardless of whether you are a levy or non-levy payer. You can also advertise apprenticeship vacancies through this account.
THE DIGITAL APPRENTICESHIP SERVICE (DAS) ACCOUNT Through your account you will be able to manage a range of services. This includes finding training providers that deliver your chosen apprenticeship programme, reserving funding for the provider to deliver your chosen apprenticeship, advertising vacancies on ‘Find an Apprenticeship’ and managing your apprentices. You will first need to create an account, then add a PAYE scheme on behalf of your organisation and lastly accept the employer legal agreement with the DfE (Department For Education).

OUR APPRENTICE SUCCESSES We’re extremely proud of our apprentices, and rightfully so. Many of them have achieved incredible things with the support of their employers, and have started prosperous career journeys. You can read about our student successes below:
FROM APPRENTICES TO MENTORS: M&B PERFORMANCE HELPS NEW GENERATION OF TECHNICIANS THRIVE Jake Blight and Cole McFadyean’s journey from York College apprentices to successful business owners has come full circle with the launch of their own motor repair shop, M&B Performance in Malton. Now, they’re passing on their knowledge and experience to their first apprentice, Harry Camp, who is following in their footsteps.
“Apprenticeships give you a look into what your career could be like, which is important as you’re going to be doing a job for a long time. My apprenticeship is going to give me a qualification in something I enjoy. It also means I can earn money to get out and enjoy myself when I’m not at work or College. There are lots of benefits to an apprenticeship. Jake and Cole are really good, the great thing is that they’re young themselves so they understand what it’s like to be in my position. They know what it’s like to be young and they can explain things better because they haven’t long left College themselves. I click with them really well, like I would my mates. I’ve learnt a lot about teamwork from working at M&B Performance. They treat me really well, they’re supportive and I feel like I’m part of the team.”
HARRY
APPRENTICESHIPS | 11 M&B Co-owners Jake and Cole explained the huge benefits that taking on Harry has brought to their business and they are hoping that he will want to continue working with M&B Performance at the end of his apprenticeship. “It’s benefitted our business a lot. Harry helps ease the pressure and, the more he learns, the more it allows us to get away to do some business and admin tasks. We’re hoping that after he’s finished his apprenticeship, he’ll want to stay. Taking on an apprentice is a no brainer. You can mould an apprentice into what your business needs.”

AWARD-WINNER MATTHEW BENEFITS FROM ‘BRILLIANT’ APPRENTICE PARTNERSHIP WITH BAGNALLS Award-winning apprentice Matthew Clayton demonstrates the success of the long-standing partnership between York College & University Centre and Bagnalls. Progressing from a multi-skills course into a painting and decorating apprenticeship, Matthew secured full-time employment and multiple College awards thanks to his strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment to learning.
“College taught me all the different skills that I use on site and helped me know what to expect day-to-day when I started my apprenticeship. If I’ve been struggling with a task at work, there’s always someone who will take the time to show me what to do and help me out – which was the same at College. As a company, Bagnalls are always looking to help apprentices out. They even sent me to their Training Academy, which is like a second college really.”
MATTHEW
“It’s all about Matthew’s work ethic for me and we were always receiving feedback from College that he was exactly the same there. His timekeeping is superb. He’s always at work on time and he’s just really willing to get stuck in, learn and give things a go. He also follows instructions really well and is polite.” On why Bagnalls believe their professional relationship with College is such a productive one, Bagnalls’ Contracts Manager, Jonny Miller added: “We find that the apprentices we get from York College are good and reliable and the relationship we have in terms of direct communication with tutors helps us massively. They answer any queries that we have got, whether that’s to do with timetables or exams, and that level of communication is key. We can also let the tutors know if we feel an apprentice needs more tuition in a specific area with a confidence that they’ll then get it from College.”

BEAUTY APPRENTICE SHINING AT VERBENA SPA Working and training at Verbena Spa in Helmsley, Lucy’s passion for beauty stems from her mother, a hardworking mobile hairdresser who has been her greatest source of support and inspiration.
“I’d say I’ve always had an interest in beauty. I think apprenticeships are the way forward as you’re learning on the job, and I feel like I’ve learnt so much already. On my first day at Verbena Spa, I did feel nervous and I wasn’t sure what it was going to be like, but everyone was really welcoming. There’s around 20 people in the Spa Team and we all get on really well. I’ve been mentored by Christina who is responsible for my training, she’s really good. My tutor at College is lovely too. She really cares and she can have a laugh with us. You always learn more, I think, when you get on with your tutor, it really helps and she’s so supportive.
Verbena Spa Manager, Kelly Nicholson, says: “The apprentices keep us all on our toes with bringing in new skills because things change in the beauty industry so much. They get all the new ideas and trends that are happening from their College studies. When I first met Lucy, I thought that she was very keen to be in the industry which was great. She’s progressed loads and the confidence she now has is brilliant. We have taken on a lot of apprentices and have had a relationship with the College for more than four years now. The idea for us is that we take someone on as an apprentice and follow it through to offer them a permanent position if we have one available at the end of their apprenticeship. That for me is really important.”
To anyone considering an apprenticeship, I’d say go for it. It’s definitely worth it, you learn lots and there’s so much you can do with it.”

T Level Industry Work Placements: Industry placements are part of the new T Level qualifications which help students to develop their technical skills whilst gaining vital on-the-job training. T Levels have been developed jointly with employers and education providers so that curriculum content meets the industry needs and prepares the student for their future career. Industry placements are 315 hours in length and are to be completed over the two years of the qualification, (315 hours works out at around 45 days, depending on day lengths). Students will attend placement on their dedicated placement day(s) every week over a specific period to fit in with their course delivery model. Employability skills are built into the T Level, so students will have an idea of what employers are looking for and how to conduct themselves in the workplace. While students are on placement, they need to work towards learning goals, which are set in line with the qualification delivery. These add structure to the placement to ensure students are involved in a range of tasks, activities, and colleague collaboration. The learning goals are broad and flexible to accommodate the variety of employers we work with, the individual needs of each employer, and the tasks you would like them to undertake. A suggestion of tasks and activities would be needed to ensure the placement is suitable. While the placement is ongoing, there will be 3 monitoring reviews arranged and held by a York College T Level Reviewer to ensure the placement is progressing as expected, and to set targets for continued learning for the student. The Reviewer will lead on the paperwork to document these are being met, however a signature and any additional comments will be needed by the mentor/staff member. If you feel a long-term placement is not possible or is not suitable at this current time, you could still provide students with
valuable experience through a ‘taster placement’. These are 35-hour placements that can be spread across 5+ weeks, 1 day per week or they can be completed in College holidays, where a block may be possible. Mandatory Placements: These placements form a mandatory component of several vocational courses, including Childcare, Health and Social Care, and Sport. They range from 30 – 250 hours. They can be spread across a number of weeks, where students attend on their designated placement day(s); alternatively, they can be completed in College holidays, where a block may be possible. They may also be scheduled into student timetables. Standard Placements: These 35-hour placements can be spread across 5+ weeks, 1 day per week or can be completed in College holidays, where a block may be possible. These types of placements are a fantastic taster if you are thinking of taking on a longer-term industry placement or an apprentice in the near future, or want a placement student to assist with short-term projects.
SAFEGUARDING AND HEALTH & SAFETY Employers hosting a student on placement must provide a safe, secure environment that supports their well-being and development. This includes a full induction (we can provide an induction checklist if needed), appropriate training, clear health and safety policies, and consistent supervision throughout the placement. Tasks must be suitable for the student’s age, experience, and the safe use of any equipment involved. Employers must also hold valid Employer’s Liability Insurance covering students on placement. A designated mentor or supervisor should provide guidance, regular check-ins, and feedback to support student welfare and development.

TYPES OF WORK PLACEMENTS
PLACEMENTS | 20
OUR STUDENT SUCCESSES EDUCATION & EARLY YEARS T LEVEL STUDENT EVIE LANDS PERMANENT JOB ON PLACEMENT WITH TIDDLYWINKS Education & Early Years student Evie has already landed herself a permanent job after excelling on her T Level placement with Tiddlywinks Day Nursery in Easingwold. Evie’s resilience, kindness, empathy, initiative, proactive nature, and maturity are among the noted qualities that she has been able to showcase during her 750 hours in the workplace and persuaded the management team to offer her a full-time Early Years Educator position, which she will start when she completes her T Level studies this summer.
“Halfway through Year 11, I decided I wanted to work in childcare and I think the T Level gives you a good mix between working and the learning side. At the end of the course, you’re work ready and it feels good that I’ll be going straight into a job. It means I must be doing something right! I wasn’t always sure what I wanted to do when I finished the course and whether I wanted to go to university or not, but the management team here have also said to me that, if I wanted to study at university part-time, they would support me. I could then move up and do more senior managerial roles.”
EVIE
Manager Katy Bulleyment added: “I think T Levels are working really well. It’s been a very organised programme with a structure for Evie. She follows the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) and our models as well and the T Level gives her a breadth of knowledge, which is so important in childcare. Evie has been provided with all the information she needs because all the theory is what helps to make someone a successful practitioner. Studying the theory gives you the foundation skills and knowledge you need to be successful in the childcare industry. With a T Level, we get to work with Evie over a long period and that allows you to teach students a lot and show them what you need.”
Jackson and Luke both believe enrolling on a York College T Level course has placed them on the right track for a career in engineering. The Engineering second-year students are currently completing their 315 placement hours with rail company Northern, as they combine their classroom tuition around gaining valuable experience in the workplace. For Jackson and Luke, that workplace is often aboard fully operational trains in the real-life setting of York Railway Station.
Northern’s OnBoard Systems Service Technician, Rob Brown, has been impressed by both Jackson and Luke’s attitude towards learning, saying: “The students’ contributions to the placement has been great. They have got involved with everything we have asked them to do and immersed themselves fully in the engineering department. I’d definitely recommend taking on T Level students. It’s valuable to the business, but it’s also giving somebody a look at life within the engineering sector beforehand, so you’re actually getting the right kind of person to potentially apply for a job at a later date. You can also mould that individual and find out how keen they are to work in the industry further down the line.” Northern Chief Operating Officer, Matt Rice, added: "Working in partnership with York College has shown us what talent is being nurtured on our doorstep here in York and, with a decade of growth in engineering ahead of us, we look forward to fostering further opportunities for students.”

PLACEMENTS | 22
“It’s really exciting to be able to work on trains in a station during a normal working day. I think the T Level work placement helps you stand out ahead of everybody else. I’m hoping it will give me a leg up in terms of getting an apprenticeship after the course. I enjoy designing stuff and all the CAD (Computer-Aided Design) drawings, models and prototypes that we do. A lot of the stuff we learn in the classroom you can interlink with what you do on placement, so it demonstrates that the things we are learning at College are applicable when you go into a job. All the Northern staff are friendly and welcoming and all just want you to do the best you can do.”
CAN YOU PROVIDE A PLACEMENT IN...? We're particularly looking for industry placement opportunities in the following areas: • Business and Administration: Leadership and Management • Design, Surveying and Planning • Building Services Engineering for Construction: Electrical • Education & Childcare: Early Years Educator or Teaching Assistant • Design & Development for Engineering and Manufacturing • Digital Software Development • Digital Support and Security (Cyber Security) • Health • Events and Venue Technician • Content Creation • Marketing • Legal Services If you think you can offer a placement opportunity, we'd love to hear from you. Email: placements@yorkcollege.ac.uk
JACKSON “It’s great getting that first-hand experience and it will really help me in the future when I’m trying to get an apprenticeship. The placement has given me more experience using tools. I can label every component on a train now and tell you what it does. Hopefully, I can go on to get an apprenticeship with Northern and develop into a Rail Engineer. I’ve enjoyed designing and prototyping models on CAD and developing those ideas. In College, we’re able to use a wide range of software programmes like (Autodesk) Inventor and SolidWorks and then make our designs come to fruition.”
