QUALIFICATIONS EXPLAINED

Here at York College & University Centre, we offer a range of different qualifications covering various levels of study. Our qualifications include foundation degrees, bachelor’s degrees, BA top-ups, higher national certificates and diplomas (HNC/D), apprenticeships and a range of professional qualifications.

LEVELS OF STUDY

UNDERGRADUATE STUDY

A foundation degree (FD) is the academic equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor’s degree, Level 4 and Level 5. These courses are vocational, two years full-time or four years part-time and have a strong focus on developing in-demand skills. A foundation degree can give you flexibility while you work and they are ideal for those who don’t want to commit to three full years of a degree but want to have the option to progress further down the line. These courses develop role-specific skills, to support your progression.

Bachelor’s degrees are the most widely studied undergraduate qualification and are usually studied over three years full-time or six years part-time. These courses are designed to give you an in-depth understanding of one or more subjects, giving you the knowledge required to progress into your chosen sector.

‘Topping-up’ - those who have studied a foundation degree or HND may choose to ‘top-up’ to a full bachelor’s degree. To ‘top-up’ means to extend your study by one year full-time or two years part-time. There is no time limit on ‘topping-up’ a foundation degree and you can therefore return to study at a later date. When ‘topping-up,’ it is expected that your foundation degree includes relevant modules. Depending on your previous qualifications, you could enter at the second year or third year of the degree.

WHY CHOOSE UNDERGRADUATE STUDY?

Flexibility:

Full and part-time options means that undergraduate study with us is achievable alongside work and other commitments, allowing you to complete your education journey your way.

Employment Progression:

Foundation degrees and bachelor’s degrees can boost your employability. Our range of vocational degrees allow you to develop work ready employability skills, meaning our graduates are armed with the latest skills and knowledge to enter their chosen sector.

Higher Earning Potential:

On average, graduates earn significantly more over their lifetime compared to those without higher education qualifications. Our range of qualifications include work experience opportunities and placements etc, so you can enter your chosen industry with confidence.

HNC & HND

Higher national certificate (HNC) and higher national diploma (HND) qualifications could be the perfect fit for you. These are qualifications at Level 4 and 5, normally studied over one year full-time and two years part-time, perfect if you want a higher qualification at a particular level. These qualifications are ideal for those who like to learn through doing. Some include work placement opportunities and all have a range of assessments.

Our HNC and HND qualifications use study and practical-based elements to prepare you for a particular career. This combination makes these qualifications desirable to employers, equipping those who study them with the hands-on skills and knowledge required to gain employment or progress within their chosen career by achieving a more professional status. Some students find these courses to be valuable in preparing for degree study.

WHY CHOOSE HNCS & HNDS?

Enhanced Employability and Professional Recognition:

HNCs and HNDs are designed with employers and industry in mind, so are perfect for those already employed who are looking to upskill, or those looking for a quicker entry route to employment than a traditional three year degree. They are recognised by employers and professional bodies and are particularly valued in the vocational and technical sectors.

Affordability:

Lower tuition fees and shorter durations mean that HNCs and HNDs are an affordable study option for many. Our HNCs and HNDs are an accessible way to further your education and career. You can also take out a loan to cover your fees, meaning our HNCs and HNDs are an accessible way to further your education and career.

Employer Sponsorship:

Many employers are willing to sponsor employees to complete an HNC or HND part-time while working, meaning you can improve your skills and develop knowledge that you can apply in the workplace.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprenticeships give you the option to study while working and earning a wage, whilst also not having to pay tuition fees.

Our apprenticeship programmes enable new and existing employees to gain industry-specific skills and knowledge by releasing them for day or block-release with our expert staff, using our well-equipped facilities. If you are not currently in a relevant job that can offer you an apprenticeship, apprenticeship vacancies can be found at www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk or on our website.

To study an apprenticeship, you must be working at least 30 hours per week and meet the entry requirements set by the apprenticeship and the employer. With a mentor in place, employees will have the workplace training and support to help manage their progress throughout the apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships aren’t just for school leavers either, with more and more mature students opting to study an apprenticeship to retrain or diversify their skill set to benefit their business and meet organisations’ recruitment training

WHY CHOOSE AN APPRENTICESHIP?

Improved Opportunities:

Studying an apprenticeship as an adult could help to improve the quality and range of opportunities within your career, and continual professional development and learning is key to a successful career journey.

Re-enter Education:

Apprenticeships are a great way to get back into education and improve your confidence, allowing you to learn valuable work-related skills in both a theoretical and practical way within the workplace.

Develop New Skills:

Apprenticeships are a great way for adults to retrain and learn new skills, enabling you to seek out new, prosperous careers.

OUR COMMUNITY

York College University Centre is inclusive of everyone and welcomes students from a range of diverse backgrounds, and at different stages in their lives and careers.

PROGRESSORS

Our varied provision provides a natural transition for our Level 3 students at College to gain their degree or higher-level qualification whilst remaining in an education institution they are familiar with.

RETURNING TO EDUCATION

Circumstances change, goals alter and we are more aware than ever of the importance of looking after our mental health and doing something we enjoy and feel passionate about. We are seeing more people assessing their lives and retraining and upskilling in alternative areas, at all ages. Our mixed age classes allow for cross-collaboration and sharing of ideas that can generate a wealth of knowledge and understanding beyond that found in textbooks.

FURTHER AFIELD

Whilst the majority of our students are from the local area, our flexible learning approaches are also well suited to those who need to commute from further afield. We condense our timetables and try to spread courses over as few days as possible to help keep travel costs down and give time for work around studies and looking after family, allowing for a better work/life balance.

OUR PROMISE

Whatever your individual circumstances, we aim to provide a welcome and engaging community for you to enjoy and help develop your educational ambitions and future career goals.

INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

The Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Technology (IoT) – specialists in providing higher-level technical education and training.

INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

The Institute of Technology is part of a government initiative for the College to work alongside local employers and further and higher education institutions to understand what the skills needs are and then look at how the curriculum can be tailored to meet those needs. Through the Institute of Technology, employers will have the opportunity to support the content of courses and help ensure that students’ higher and technical skills are up-to-date and relevant for the workplace.

The IoT brought an investment of circa £10 million of capital funding into the region. York College & University Centre has invested a proportion of this into industry-standard equipment to support the delivery of higher-level technical training. This significant investment will enhance employment opportunities and ensure highly qualified individuals for the region’s employers.

WHY STUDY AT AN IOT?

Our IoT courses provide the opportunity for students to develop their skills and gain higher-level qualifications in the areas of digital, engineering, manufacturing or construction. Through a collaborative partnership with local employers, we offer programmes to deliver higher-level technical skills on par with more academic routes and will achieve the same level of prestige as universities.

HIGHER TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS (HTQS)

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) are Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications, such as Foundation degrees, Higher National Certificates and Higher National Diplomas. They are an option for young people starting their career and for adults looking to upskill or retrain. HTQs have been approved against employer developed standards, also known as occupational standards. This ensures that learners gain the skills that employers want, and employers can be confident that learners have the knowledge, skills and behaviours for a particular specialist role.

York School of Art is York College & University Centre’s creative community for adults. It is a place to belong, a creative place, a place to do and create amazing things. The York School of Art seeks to inspire the future artists, designers and creative thinkers to make their mark on the world.

Welcome to York School of Art, where a legacy dating back to 1842 meets the aspirations of a new generation of artists.

Founded in 1842 as one of Britain’s first provincial art schools, York School of Art nurtured the budding talents of prominent Victorian artists such as Albert Moore (1841-1895), his brother Henry Moore (1831-1895) and Joseph Alfred Terry.

Initially known as York School of Design and situated in Little Blake Street, it moved to Minster Yard six years later, it was here that the name changed to York School of Art. In 1892, the Art School had outgrown its accommodation in Minster Yard and relocated to Exhibition Square (York Art Gallery). In 1976, York School of Art became part of York College at our former Tadcaster Road site. The merger of York College with York Sixth Form College followed in 1999

before the move to our current Sim Balk Lane premises 17 years ago.

In 2024, it felt like the right time to recognise our historical connection to the York School of Art and the historical importance to the City of York for this much-loved institution. The school has a rich history and legacy, and we are pleased to reconnect York College & University Centre with its past in this respect and emphasise our commitment to art education as an institution.

Our York School of Art courses are already firmly established on campus, with students benefitting from the use of our fully-equipped studios and workshops, expert teaching staff and a gallery in which their work and that of guest artists is regularly displayed.

DID YOU KNOW?

The City of York is one of only 12 UNESCO Creative Cities in the UK and it is unique in being the UK’s first and only UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts.

OUR STUDENT SUCCESSES

We’re extremely proud of our students, and rightfully so. Many of them have achieved incredible things. You can read about our student successes below:

MARTYN - THE “CAREER CHANGER”

Access to HE Diploma (Science)

Martyn reflected on his life and aspirations while being furloughed during the Covid-19 pandemic. He attended one of our Open Events and was informed about the Access to HE Diploma in Science, where he could specialise in Biology and Chemistry.

“I spoke to somebody who would become one of my teachers and she told me the Access option was perfect for what I needed to progress to a Paramedic Science degree, which was the route I wanted to go down. As soon as I knew that, it was a case of please tell me where to sign up!

York College has been paramount in getting me where I am now. I couldn’t have just gone straight to university and done the course. Some people did – even as school leavers – but the first unit was about pathophysiology, which was all about human systems and, if I hadn’t had the background biology knowledge from the Access course, I think I would have fallen at the first hurdle, because I’d have felt that I wasn’t prepared. I got Bs and Cs in the sciences at school, but the Access course gave me the confidence to believe in myself.

It allowed me to hit the ground running at university, which I really appreciate. The teaching was outstanding too. I fully respect the teachers that I had and what they did for me.”

Martyn progressed to study Paramedic Science at Sheffield Hallam University.

JORGE-ANN - THE “WORKING PARENT”

Access to HE Diploma (Humanities & Social Sciences)

Jorge-Ann returned to York College last summer as an Access to Higher Education student, having previously dropped out of her A Level studies at Sim Balk Lane eight years earlier due to mental health issues.

Since then, she has had to contend with a period of homelessness, along with the challenges presented living with a rare liver disease that saw her require life-saving surgery when she was only 15 days old.

The turning point in Jorge-Ann’s life, though, came in 2019 when she met her husband, with the couple going on to have two children.

Balancing a return to education with the raising of a family obviously carries its own trials and tribulations and, tragically, Jorge-Ann and the rest of her cohort also had to cope with the unexpected and sudden death of a much-loved classmate during the course.

At the time, Jorge-Ann questioned whether she wanted to continue with her studies but, once more, her resilience came to the fore and she is now starting a Psychology degree at York St John University, where she intends to progress on to a Doctorate.

“It was really tough and I won’t sugarcoat that, but I cracked on with my work in the evenings and, at lunchtime in College, we’d get together as a group and look at each other’s work to help each other out, as we were all focussed and wanted the same things from the course.

We were given a couple of extensions because the tutors understood, as older students, there were other things going on in our lives, but I was also organised, on top of things as much as I could be and even handed quite a few essays in early to get them out of the way. So, it was hard, but very much possible.”

ELEANOR - THE “NEW HOBBYIST”

Ladies Who Lift

“I’ve never had the opportunity before for someone to guide me through weightlifting and I wouldn’t feel comfortable going into a gym not knowing what I was doing and risking injuring myself. I’ve been to a gym before, sat at a machine, used the lowest weights possible, gone through the motions, not really had any idea what I was doing and tried to run away as quickly as possible! I’ve never trained successfully or with any structure or meaning behind it.

I’ve felt a real sense of community attending Lucy’s classes and there’s always so much support. You feel like you’ve got someone watching you and helping you and it’s given me the confidence to now go to the gym by

myself. I’ve started coming to the gym after work and it’s been a healthier way of releasing things. It’s helped me to manage the way that I feel. The classes are incredibly supportive.

Lucy understands our own individual goals and why we’ve come along. Her knowing our back stories really helps and she tailors what we need to learn to work towards our goals. You wouldn’t normally get that unless you could afford to have a personal trainer, but that’s not something that’s accessible to lots of people. Being able to come along and gain experience has made my confidence grow.

I 100% would absolutely recommend the class to others and I already have!”

HARRIET - THE “PROGRESSOR”

Stonemasonry Apprenticeship Level 2 - York Minster

“I wanted to do a trade, because I knew it would be something I could take anywhere with me and rely upon for employment, and I found out that stonemasonry was something you could do in York. Obviously, everyone walks past the Minster and sees all those amazing carvings and I knew that I liked working with my hands.

I applied for the apprenticeship at the Minster, but didn’t get it first time around, so that’s when I came to College as a student and did the Level 2 and Level 3 courses. I was 27 and they were full-time courses but I was in three days a week, so I was lucky enough to still be able to do part-time work as well.

The skills I acquired at College then helped get me on to the apprenticeship. I feel very lucky because the Minster is a really special place to work and such an iconic building that just makes you happy. It’s a beautiful environment and you get to do really lovely work.

It's also good to be doing something that’s worthwhile on a building that’s special to people. It was special to me before I even thought about working here.

College is a great environment to work on stones that won’t be going on a building, because there’s a bit less pressure and you can build up confidence that you then take into the workplace. Doing the Level 2 and 3 courses gave me a good start with banker masonry (the manual preparation of stones for use in buildings) and I really enjoyed being at College.

My tutors at College know the industry and have great contacts. The facilities also make it a really good working environment and better than some workplaces. Everybody gets a banker with an extraction unit and we had everything we needed.

I feel like I’m learning something new every day on the apprenticeship, even during tasks that might seem simple.”

MATTHEW - THE “RETURN TO EDUCATION”

Cert ED

Former student Matthew returned to York College & University Centre as a Hospitality Coach, having become an award-winning restaurant owner.

Matthew enrolled on our In-Service Cert Ed course, which incorporated 50 hours of teaching time and additional shadowing of College tutors.

He now combines teaching and studying commitments with the running of his restaurant.

“I really enjoy being able to pass on my real-life experience to students in an industry-standard working environment, as well as the coffee mornings, a la carte menus and evening events we offer in The Cookery. I’ve always had an itch to teach.

We have had apprentices in the kitchen and front-of-house before at our restaurant and doing things together with them and bouncing off ideas led to a spark within myself. I want to see the students here thrive and become the next generation.

The level of support in the College is fantastic. Being in the classroom with other trainee teachers makes you appreciate you’re not the only person who might be feeling nervous teaching in front of a whole class for the first time.”

AMY - THE “ENTREPRENEUR”

Barbering Apprenticeship Level 2 - AOX Cuts

Amy secured a Distinction grade after completing her apprenticeship two and a half years ago, and she is now self-employed and running her own business from a chair in the YFB HQ barber shop opposite Clifford’s Tower in York. She recently returned to College to give a demonstration to our current students.

She has her own loyal Instagram following and a client base that means she is always booked up in advance, proving that gender need not be a barrier to success in the traditionally male-dominated industry of barbering.

Amy says that the quality of the tuition, facilities and resources on campus meant that the time she spent at College during her apprenticeship was every bit as important as the experience she was gaining in her workplace.

“I really enjoyed coming in, the environment and seeing my friends at College. It was a change to the barbers and my tutor was great, having worked in the industry herself.

The facilities we worked in were refurbished when I was at College and made to look just like a barbers. You had all the same equipment and it gave you a good feel of the environment you were going to be working in.

I enjoyed learning the theory as well, because that’s not something you always learn in the workplace. You need to know all about health and safety, skin conditions and hygiene, because they are all massive parts of being a barber. Being at College also builds up your confidence for when you’re in the shop.

Barbering is a skill I can take anywhere, especially with having my College qualification because, if I want to go somewhere else in the world, I need that certificate.”
