Our cover star this month is a young actress from Mossley Hill who in her short career has already amassed an enviable filmography – appearing alongside Renée Zellweger in the award-winning Judy and Bridgerton’s Phoebe Dynevor in 2021’s The Colour Room. We recently sat down with Darci to discuss her remarkable rise and newest project, Midas Man, a biographical film about the life of legendary music entrepreneur and Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein. LIVERPOOL’S OLIVER KING FOUNDATION ‘PROUD’ TO REACH DEFIBRILLATOR MILESTONE
Mark King from the Oliver King Foundation discusses his success with Jim Shannon MP
Charity has installed 4,000 life-saving devices at business premises nationwide THE OLIVER KING FOUNDATION was established in 2012 after 12-year-old Liverpool schoolboy Oliver King lost his life following a sudden cardiac arrest while taking part in a swimming race. The national organisation has since campaigned for a change in legislation so that all schools are required to have life-saving defibrillators on site. It has been at the forefront of efforts to install the equipment in workplaces as well. Mark King, founder of the Oliver King Foundation, says: “We are proud to have reached this incredible milestone. “Since 2012 we have worked relentlessly to educate people about the potential of defibrillators to save lives and have now delivered them to over 4,000 workplaces and community organisations across the UK – all of whom know they are essential pieces of kit. “As far as we are concerned, defibrillators should be as commonplace as fire extinguishers in public buildings. We may have hit the 4,000 mark but we’re not stopping here because we’ve got so much more work to do and more lives to save.
“This is a landmark moment but also a time to accelerate our work and encourage more businesses and workplaces to acquire defibrillators. It is the responsible thing for employers to do.” North West businesses and organisations including Huyton Asphalt, Kirwans Solicitors, Sedulo Group, DAM Health Group and Knowsley Council are among those to have received defibrillators and training from the Oliver King Foundation. A number of schools and colleges in the region have also worked with the charity to secure the equipment. ALDER HEY LAUNCHES ‘REVOLUTIONARY DIGITAL HEALTH PLATFORM’ PC&CO GO THE EXTRA MILE FOR CHARITY Staff at Liverpool law firm taking part in sponsored walk for Cancer Research UK STAFF MEMBERS FROM PAUL CROWLEY & CO solicitors will be gearing up to go the extra mile this month, 100 extra miles to be exact, all in aid of Cancer Research UK. Those taking part can pace themselves and take on the ‘Walk 100 Miles in June’ challenge in whatever way suits them best. Covering the 100 miles across the month works out at roughly 3.3 miles per day, which on average takes less than one hour a day or longer walks can be done on the weekends if preferred. AlderHey@nywhere™ is being championed as a “hospital of the future” ALDER HEY CHILDREN’S NHS FOUNDATION TRUST has launched a ground-breaking digital platform which is set to revolutionise the way in which patient care is delivered to children and young people. AlderHey@nywhere™ provides a hybrid point of access and patient care for families, children, young people and clinicians to manage, treat, educate and coordinate the delivery of their healthcare. Most importantly, it will focus on preventative healthcare and will make patient care more accessible and personalised. The technology was developed by Alder Hey Innovation in collaboration with Microsoft and Mindwave as a solution to addressing the finite capacity of hospital and community resources, including both physical space and workforce. This was also paired with an increased demand for accident and emergency admissions, long waiting times for outpatient appointments, and increasing lengths of stay. Claire Liddy, managing director of Alder Hey Innovation, says: “We think the AlderHey@nywhere™ platform will allow us to elevate the level and access to care for children and young people who tell us that they want to be empowered to understand and manage their own healthcare and treatment.”

From a landmark Abbey Road visit to the release of arguably the most important album of all time – June has featured a string of significant moments for our Fab Four down the years
M
ore than 60 years ago this month, in June 1961, the recording of a popular Scottish folk tune with unknown origins would play a crucial part in The Beatles’ fortunes. Within 12 months of cutting ‘My Bonnie’, The Beatles were visiting Abbey Road for a historic first recording test at EMI Studios. The test hadn’t gone well (four songs were recorded - none of which had impressed), but The Beatles’ wit and tremendous charisma had won producer George Martin over. By June 1963, Lennon and McCartney had begun writing their second No.1 hit ‘She Loves You’, in the dining room of McCartney’s childhood home on Forthlin Road. In honour of this storied musical tradition, June will see four unsigned music acts record inside the house for the Forthlin Road Sessions. The socalled ‘birthplace of The Beatles’, over 30 of the band’s songs were written inside this modest Allerton terraced house. At the beginning of June 1964, The Beatles began their one and only world tour in Denmark and continuing on through the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. On the eve of the tour, Ringo Starr took ill and session drummer Jimmie Nicol was thrust into the world’s spotlight, becoming a Beatle for 13 days. Nicol stood in for eight concerts – ending in Australia before returning to relative obscurity. All four Beatles attended Buckingham Palace in June 1965 to be awarded MBEs for their services to music – many past recipients returned their medals in disgust at seemingly being on the same level as The Beatles. Prior to The Beatles beginning their final European tour in June 1965, John Lennon published his second book ‘A Spaniard In The Works’ – selling 100,000 copies

within three months. The book was designed by Robert Freeman, who took the album cover photographs for ‘With The Beatles’, ‘Beatles For Sale’, ‘Help!’ and ‘Rubber Soul’. In June 1966, The Beatles played five concerts at the Budokan Hall, Tokyo – a tour which signalled the beginning of the end of Beatlemania. Bookings at the venue were reserved for martial arts, crowds were restrained and many traditionalists in Japan were offended, resulting in death threats to the band. For their own safety, all four Beatles remained in their hotel for three nights and collaborated on a painting. With a lamp positioned in the centre of the paper, each Beatle painted a quadrant. When the piece was complete the lamp was removed and each member signed the empty space. The abstract work, titled ‘Images Of A Woman’, sold in 2012 for $155,250. Originally scheduled for release on 1 June 1967, The Beatles’ iconic album, ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, was issued a week early and was heralded as a masterpiece. In its first week it sold more than 250,000 copies in the UK and by the end of June it had sold over half a million. It was the first Beatles album to have the same track listings on both the UK and US versions. Praised by fans and music critics alike, its appeal is timeless, and hit the top spot again in 2017 following its re-release. Less than a month after the release of Sgt Pepper in 1967, the BBC invited The Beatles to represent Britain and appear on a global television broadcast called Our World – the world’s first live television satellite link-up. The BBC brief was the message had to be simple and so, especially for the occasion, John wrote ‘All You Need Is Love’. Live from EMI’s Studio One, The Beatles delivered an enduring message to more than 400 million people across five continents.

Boasting an extensive drinks menu promising signature cocktails and an enviable location with views down Water Street towards the world-famous Liver Building, it is easy to see why Riva Blu’s outside area was brimming with guests upon our arrival. Slightly envious of those already seated outside sipping cocktails and in need of some refreshments on a warm evening, my guest and I began by ordering a mocktail each (£4.95) at the venue’s swanky bar. Quickly downed and feeling refreshed, we were shown to our table where we would soon decide on a breadboard (£5.95) and bruschetta burrata (£9.25) for our first course. Taking in a view of the Liver Building through the window, the scene was set for what would be a special meal. Our starters arrived soon after and my guest and I duly tucked in, immediately remarking upon the subtlety of the flavours and the clear attention to detail on show, something which would become a common theme.
On this showing, there is every reason to believe that Riva Blu can embed itself as a true favourite.

The pesto dip on the breadboard was a real delight, however the true highlight was the bruschetta burrata. The contrast of creamy burrata alongside the kick of the rocket and n’duja sausage and the refreshing cherry tomatoes proved nothing short of sensational. The portions were generous as well and one starter was more than enough to share between two. With our appetites sufficiently whetted, we were eagerly anticipating our main courses. My guest plumped for the sea bass siciliana (£20.50) which comes served with tomatoes, anchovies, black olives, capers and basil, whereas I went for the lobster linguine (£29.95). The two dishes arrived shortly thereafter and continued where our starters left off, dazzling with their array of flavours. My guest reported that the seabass was expertly cooked, with the slice of lemon and a bed of tomatoes complementing the fish, which he remarked upon as amongst the best he has ever had! I was equally impressed with my main, which was simply delightful in both taste and presentation. Topped by the lobster which was rich in flavour, it was a dish to remember. Following a short break, and full to the brim by this point, my guest and I decided we only had room for a dessert to share and stretched to a tiramisu (£8) to round off
proceedings. Again, we did not wait long for it to arrive and our final course represented a lovely, nostalgic climax to a sumptuous evening characterised by excellent service and beautiful food, with the infusion of the sponge, amaretto and the creamy mascarpone typically exquisite. An essential Italian dish done right! I should add that, as was the case with our starters, the portion was more than enough to share. As was immediately apparent upon our arrival at the restaurant, the venue seems to be having no difficulties in attracting guests fancying a drink in its beautiful outside area. And, on this showing, there is every reason to believe that Riva Blu can embed itself as a true favourite with its food offering to boot. This area is blessed with an array of great Italian eateries in close proximity including high-end San Carlo as well as established favourites Rudy’s Pizzeria, Bacaro and Casa Italia but it is fair to say that Riva Blu does offer something genuinely unique. As we headed off into the night, my guest and I were left in no doubt that Riva Blu is guaranteed to prove to be a summer hit in Liverpool with its perfect location, delicious cocktails and breathtaking food a potent combination. In short, its offering is subtle, authentic and classy. Bellissimo!

rom investing in a way that incurs much more tax than is necessary to making pension-income decisions without being aware of potentially expensive tax implications, even the most financially savvy among us can fall foul of the UK’s many tax rules and regulations. The full list of errors to avoid and opportunities that shouldn’t be missed is a long one! But here are some of the most common and costly tax traps to look out for.
Forgetting to share the load
Most tax allowances, exemptions and tax-efficient investment opportunities are available to each person in a couple. For example, if only one person in a couple has used up their ISA allowance for the current tax year, they can gift some money to their partner who has some or all of their allowance left. The same approach can be taken to each person’s annual Capital Gains Tax (CGT) allowance.
Leaving it to the last minute
Many of us are in the habit of paying attention to our allowances only at the beginning or end of the tax year. Don’t leave it too late as you could miss out on allowances and exemptions that can’t be carried forward.
Saying no to free money
A surprising number of people forget (or decide not) to reclaim certain payments to which they’re entitled. For example, some higher-rate and additional-rate taxpayers fail to reclaim the pension tax relief they’re due, while the tax relief offered on gifts to charities can also be overlooked.
Getting caught by the 60% rate
The way the personal allowance works creates what’s effectively a 60% Income Tax rate on earnings between £100,000 and £125,140. That’s because if you earn £100,000 or more, your £12,570 personal allowance is reduced at a rate of £1 for every £2 above £100,000. So, for every £100 of income between £100,000 and £125,140, you get only £40 to take home, with £40 taken through Income Tax and another £20 lost due to the gradual removal of the personal allowance – amounting to an effective tax rate of 60%. One of the most common ways to mitigate this is to
reduce your taxable income by using allowances such as your pension.

In praise of
Puglia
WineTime’s Jon Atkinson journeys to the heel of Italy’s ‘boot’ for his latest selections I FIRST VISITED PUGLIA IN 1999 on my honeymoon – back when it was relatively ‘undiscovered’. My Italian is virtually non-existent and back then nobody spoke English in any of the shops or restaurants that my wife and I went to, and we loved it all the more for that! Despite it being our honeymoon, we did find time to visit a couple of wineries (well of course we did!) and what impressed me then and still does today, is just how much more ‘bang for your buck’ you get compared to those regions of lofty repute further north. We visited again to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary, just a few months before Covid closed everything down. Visually, it was pretty much exactly as we remembered it, but… now, English is spoken almost everywhere – Puglia is clearly (and deservedly) an established holiday destination. We only had one winery visit lined up this time with Giuseppe Bino, the chief winemaker at Masseria Borgo
dei Trulli. We have been importing his wines for quite a few years now and they are massively popular with our customers as well as ourselves! They are based at Maruggio, close to the Ionian coastline, about an hour’s drive from our base. It took a little while to find, primarily because the place was a complete building site at that time! The winery was being completely and sympathetically rebuilt to allow for visitors, Enotourism being increasingly popular in Italy, as elsewhere. Poor Giuseppe was operating out of a portacabin! That clearly didn’t detract from his enthusiasm for the task at hand, however. He makes quite a diverse range almost exclusively from local, indigenous grape varieties, predominantly red, with Primitivo taking centre stage. Although not certified, the vines are grown organically, and Giuseppe seems just as at home amongst the vines as he is in the winery. He makes bold, flavoursome reds and crisp, zesty whites.

Primitivo, meaning early one, is an increasingly popular variety that is synonymous with Puglia, and although it is grown throughout the region, only Primitivo di Manduria carries the DOP protected quality designation. It also goes under the mantle of Zinfandel in the US and Crljenak Kaštelanski in Croatia! This wonderfully rich and voluptuous example is deep and vivid in appearance with heady aromas of ripe brambles with a hint of vanilla from the 8 months that 40% of the wine spent in oak. The palate offers a well-rounded, generous texture with a veritable taste explosion of ripe blackberries, damsons and sweet spiciness with a slight herbaceous edge. A superbly polished wine for the money, this wine makes friends very easily! £12.50
Vermentino is another variety that is deservedly gaining popularity. It has long been grown around the Mediterranean coast and beyond, but historically, has gone under various synonyms such as Rolle in Provence and Favorita in Piemonte. More recently, Vermentino seems to be the banner that more growers/regions are opting for. It does vary in style – I have yet to taste a Tuscan example that I got on with for example, but this one is perfect summer drinking with all the vibrancy and freshness of a Kiwi Sauvignon but with a more restrained citrus fruit with a hint of peach and a refreshing lick of salinity kicking in on the finish. £9.25

Zensa IGP Puglia Fiano 2020
This well-established DOP is spread across the provinces in the south of Puglia, with the eponymous town to the north-west of the stunning Baroque city of Lecce. The principal grape here is Negroamaro which must constitute at least 75% of the wine, with the balance being any of a number of local varieties. This one is 90% with 10% Malvasia Nera completing the blend. Although it is grown in the same region as the more robust Primitivo, this is noticeably lighter and fresher, with a slightly more rustic style. It offers earthy, blackcurrant aromas with notes of vanilla and mocha. There is a barely discernible oak influence, with a velvet-soft, balanced palate with just enough acidity to keep the wine fresh and very food-friendly – lovely stuff! £9.25
Pronounced SENZA, the Italian definition of “without”, or “to do without”; no chemicals, no pesticides, only what Mother Nature has given. Fiano is usually encountered in neighbouring Campania but this one hails from an organic vineyard in the Salento region of Puglia. The fruit is picked towards the end of August to retain the grapes natural acidity and picking is done in the cool of the early morning to ensure that the grapes arrive at the winery in as fresh a condition as possible. This is another terrific, fresh, zesty summertime wine – pale in appearance with elegant floral and citrus aromas with a slightly herbaceous edge. It is crisp and refreshing with hints of tropical fruit and lemongrass on the palate, finishing long, dry and elegant. £10.95

SUZAN HOLDER, wife of former Slade frontman Noddy, held a launch party at the Liverpool Beatles Museum on Mathew Street for her debut novel, Shake It Up, Beverley. Set in Liverpool, the book features a Beatles-obsessed fiftysomething mother of three who gets into trouble when she goes looking for love on a dating website. Suzan, who trained as a newspaper journalist and worked on regional and national newspapers before moving into television, adapted the book from her original stage play which was scheduled for a UK theatre tour pre-pandemic. Along with Suzan’s musician husband Noddy, the party was attended by Mike McCartney, actors Ian Puleston-Davies, Paddy Rowan and Craig Cash. The night was hosted by Liverpool radio personality Pete Price and Radio City breakfast presenter Leanne Campbell performed an extract from the book as ‘Beatles Bev’. YM Liverpool sat down with Suzan after the party to find out more about the book and her route into writing. What inspired you to become an author? I always loved writing and my primary school teacher told me I should become a journalist. As soon as I found out what that was I completely agreed with her and I eventually became a newspaper reporter and then a TV producer. I wrote TV scripts and that led to writing stage scripts but it was always my dream to be an author and write a book. Shake It Up, Beverley was originally a stage play but the pandemic wrecked those plans. Not to be defeated I transformed the script into a book and landed a two-book deal with One More Chapter, HarperCollins. I couldn’t be more thrilled.

What are you hoping readers take away from your book? Music is an enormous part of Bev’s life and she wants to find someone who shares her passion. After proving a big hit on Penny Lane, Buongiorno Deli has branched out to L25 and launched a new store in the heart of Woolton Village NOBODY COULD ACCUSE Carmelo and Kristiina of resting on their laurels. Despite only opening the first Buongiorno Deli 12 months ago (in the midst of a pandemic), the pair were already eager to expand. A need for larger premises combined with a long-held fondness for Woolton Village meant when a vacant store became available in a prime L25 location – it was an opportunity too good to pass up. “After we opened our first shop on Penny Lane we saw the support and great community around us,” says Carmelo, who hails from Sicily. “We had a lot of customers travelling from Woolton and telling us of the need [for a similar shop] there. “We have always loved the feel of Woolton Village and believe that our shop
complements the area – fitting in well with The Scotch Beef Shop next door and the Liverpool Cheese Company just down the road.” Buongiorno’s Woolton Street store stocks all the products familiar to Penny Lane customers including a wide selection of wine, cured meats and cheeses, alongside kitchen cupboard staples like coffee, olive oil, pasta, flour and tinned tomatoes. A significant increase in square footage over its Mossley Hill shop has meant Carmelo and Kristiina have been able to expand their range to include ready-made gift hampers and potentially a greater selection of ready-made foods in the future. “Our Woolton Village store has got

tables inside so we can use the space all year round,” Carmelo adds. “We offer sharing platters, sandwiches and antipasti paired with wine, beers and soft drinks. We want to create a relaxed space where everyone can enjoy themselves.” Special events are also in the works which will include Italian conversation evenings and wine tastings. Much like in Mossley Hill, Carmelo and Kristiina have been overwhelmed with the support they have received since opening at the end of April. “As soon as we announced the new store we had everyone cheering us on and impatiently waiting for the doors to finally open,” Carmelo adds. “As a small independent business, it is great meeting the locals and feeling so welcomed into the community.” Buongiorno Deli, 21a Woolton Street, L25 5NH and 121a Penny Lane, L18 1DF. RECIPE of the month Chicken with onion marmalade and rice
PREPARATION TIME: 10 minutes + standing COOKING TIME: 55 minutes Serves 4 INGREDIENTS • 8 British chicken thighs (about 1kg), trimmed of excess fat • 1 tbsp olive oil • 200g carrots, scrubbed and cut into thin rounds • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 1 tsp ground allspice • 200g pack thick cut cavolo nero, tough stalks removed • 200g basmati rice, rinsed • 350ml fresh Cooks’ Ingredients Chicken Stock • 3 tbsp Tracklements Caramelised Onion Marmalade
COOK’S TIP Don’t throw away the leftovers – they will freeze well and should be used within a month.
METHOD 1P reheat the oven to 180ºC, gas mark 4. Season the chicken and arrange, skin-side down, in an even layer in a large, shallow casserole dish or ovenproof sauté pan. Set over a medium-high heat and cook, in batches if needed, without adding oil, for 5-6 minutes until the skin starts to brown. Turn and cook on the flesh side for 1 minute, then set aside on a plate.
2 Add the oil, carrots and garlic to the pan and fry, stirring regularly, for 3 minutes until the garlic is fragrant and just golden. Stir in the allspice and fry for a further minute, then stir in the cavolo nero and season. Stir in the rice, ensuring it’s coated in the oil and spices, then add the stock. Take 2 tbsp of the onion marmalade and nestle 4 equal pockets of it into the rice.
3 Arrange the chicken, skin-side up, on top of the rice and vegetables. Warm the remaining 1 tbsp onion marmalade to loosen, then brush lightly over the chicken skin. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until the the rice is tender and the chicken is golden and fully cooked, with no pink meat remaining and the juices running clear. Stand for 10 minutes before serving.

English garden Heather Marsh on why creating the perfect cottage garden isn’t as hard as it may seem
IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY DREAM to have a classic cottage garden. That picturesque image I have in my mind from an old-fashioned chocolate box is a garden filled with nostalgic memories. I guess that’s how my own gardening pursuits all began. In the tiny backyard of my childhood home in Manchester, it was my mother’s desire to create a floral haven inspired by this romantic vision. She wanted somewhere she could retreat to, a place full of beauty and charm, and she did just that – transforming our cramped outdoor space with a glorious abundance of informal planting. It was a delightful tumbling mix of colourful annuals, blooming herbaceous perennials, rambling roses and fragrant honeysuckle with the odd few vegetables and herbs squeezed in here and there. My mother was a complete novice, she simply grew what she fancied and was unaware that the design was in fact the planting format of a country cottage garden. For 19th Century farm workers, this way of gardening was a means of putting food on the table whilst supplementing their meagre income. The design and planting of

a cottage garden was primarily functional and productive – the floral aesthetics just pleasantly masked this. Planting potatoes, beans and cabbages alongside holly hocks and daisies, growing strawberries, gooseberries and raspberries with roses and honeysuckle was all very much the norm. Herbs were always grown for their uses in cooking and for medicinal purposes too with lavender, parsley and mint most popular.
GETTING STARTED What elements constitute a genuine cottage garden? The answer is whatever you want it to be. There are so many plants that epitomise the country cottage look. Your only problem is going to be what to pick. Adopting a nonconformist attitude and style of planting will hold you in good stead. Don’t dwell on the rules you think might apply because there are none! Like my mother showed me with her

little backyard all those years ago, gardening design is all about growing what you want to grow and most importantly what gives you pleasure – I’ve no time for gardening snobbery. With that in mind, what are you waiting for? Here are some ideas to get you started. Annuals They only last one summer but will fill your garden with a riot of colour. My mother started with cosmos, sweet peas, nasturtiums, marigolds and poppies – all favourites of mine today. Shirley poppies were a stunning variety she accidentally hit on, but more about them another time. Snapdragons, Lunaria annua, columbines, evening primrose, foxgloves… I highly recommend them all. As it’s a little late in the season for seed planting, these annuals can be bought as trays of plugs – ready to plant out in between perennials. Hollyhocks No quintessential cottage garden would be complete without the ubiquitous hollyhock. These floral giants add stature to your garden and come in so many lovely colours – from the palest pink to the deepest crimson. Once established, you’ll find hollyhocks seed freely and will sprout up wherever they can. A dear friend of mine used to have them growing in every crack and crevasse of her front garden. I was always in awe of how she manged to grow such amazing specimens and all so effortlessly. What was her secret? There was none apparently! ‘I just leave nature to get on with it!’ she cheerfully exclaimed. Delphiniums The majestic spires of delphiniums are another defining feature of any cottage garden. Their tall spikes of flowers come in every shade of blue, but also white and pale pink. They prefer full sun and rich moist soil but beware, slugs love them, so putting some fine grit or eggshells around the base of the plant helps. Classic varieties grow up to 8ft but it’s the many dwarf varieties which I’ve had much more success with. Verbascum thapsus A common sight in the cottage garden, these giant biennials take a full two years to flower. In their first year they will produce a large base rosette of soft fury leaves, followed in the second by a tall rocket of golden yellow flowers. Excellent self-seeders, I tend to leave them to do just that.
Foxgloves and roses
Once you’ve decided what you want to plant, arm yourself with a list and try to stick to it. I’m in seventh heaven shopping for plants and that’s certainly what happened at the last farmers market on Lark Lane. At a pitch run by Magill’s Nurseries, I was like a kid in a sweet shop. The stall was overflowing with a bountiful selection of herbaceous perennials, seasonal bedding plants, fruit trees, flowering shrubs, herbs, houseplants, succulents and cacti. Run by the friendliest and most helpful staff you could wish, headed by owner Claire (below), I can’t recommend it enough. You’ll find everything you need to stock your cottage garden right here. The business was started by Claire’s father, a market gardener, back in the 1960s. Claire worked with him before going on to study horticulture and becoming a landscape gardener. She took over the family business in the mid-90s. If you can’t wait until the next farmers market to visit Magill’s, then why not pop over to see them in Wallasey? I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
DON’T FORGET THE ROSE No country garden would be without a rose and climbers and ramblers both offer so much charm. Both obviously climb, but ramblers are climbing roses with limited agility. A climber has larger blooms on taller stronger stems and flowers repeatedly whereas ramblers are smaller, more vigorous, and produce greater quantities of flowers. My rambler rosa Bobbie James would be perfect in any country garden setting. This variety produces huge swathes of semi-doubled white flowers every year – ideal for covering any fence or wall. For me, fragrance is almost as important as colour and Rosa ‘Albertine’ is a highly scented rambler which looks beautiful grown with jasmine and lavender.

Celebrity fitness instructor Richie Swan shares his top tips for getting in shape this summer Liverpool-based personal trainer counts Emma Bunton, Mel B and Alexandra Burke amongst his clientele

ichie Swan, who runs popular classes at the Rise Fitness Studios in South Liverpool, has been working in the fitness industry for more than two decades and understands the pressure many people feel to look like Love Island contestants and Instagram models. But the personal trainer explains that it’s not as hard as you think to shed a few pounds and achieve your peak physique. The tried and tested methods featured in his pioneering Sort Your Fit Out programme allow you to enjoy a glass of wine or bottle of beer, have a meal or a takeaway, and still stay on track. “This is not about constantly dieting,” Richie said. “You’re not going to be loving life eating rice cakes, spinach and kale while only drinking sparkling water. “So, my biggest tip is to track your calories and learn what calories are in the food you eat. “Simply, if someone wants to lose weight they must be in a calorie deficit and you can therefore go out, have a
glass of wine, have a meal, and still be able to stay on track. “It’s about identifying how many calories are in those types of food to keep them in your week so you can balance it out. “If you find that difficult, my Sort Your Fit Out methods will teach you how to easily make that happen.” Of course, exercise plays a big part when it comes to getting in shape and

main thing for achieving fitness goals is being consistent, naturally, if you enjoy it that will help and it’s the same with your diet. “When starting out it’s really important to give your weight loss journey time, it’s a marathon – not a sprint. “There’ll be times you feel like you’re smashing it, you’re motivated and thinking you’re on track. But there will be times when you struggle, and that’s completely normal for everyone in the fitness industry – no matter what condition you’re in. “Just be consistent – get three to five workouts in a week and don’t overwork yourself because it’s unsustainable. Sometimes less is more. Inside the centuryold Kirkdale building attracting thousands of tourists to Liverpool Former pub sat empty for two decades before being reborn as The Phoenix Hotel during the pandemic

grand Victorian building on Foley Street in Kirkdale is enjoying a new lease of life as a contemporary hotel. The Phoenix Hotel, which is within walking distance to both Anfield and Goodison Park stadiums, has experienced a surge in demand for bookings since it was launched during the pandemic. For decades, the building was home to a popular local pub but lay empty for over 20 years until James Winters and his team began a multi-million refurbishment project. New visitors to the city are now choosing The Phoenix as an alternative to city centre hotels and it’s also proving a hit with football fans. James recently spoke about his work to revitalise the building and open it as a hotel. He said: “This is a beautiful old building which needed to be preserved and I am delighted we have been able to do that by giving it a new lease of life. “I was nervous before we opened as a hotel but it has so far proved to be a tremendous success.
“The location is a brilliant draw for new visitors, but what really makes staying at the hotel a memorable experience is its amazing architecture and the original artefacts that we have retained. “We have a great team here too who offers guests a firstclass service and so the feedback from our visitors since we opened has been terrific. “When we designed The Phoenix Hotel we wanted to give guests a premium experience but at affordable prices. I think we are achieving this. We are proud of what we have created.” The hotel itself has 19 ensuite bedrooms which have been finished with a contemporary flourish and include a number of deluxe and superior options. MEL C, EMELI SANDÉ & VERNON KAY JOIN TOGETHER TO SUPPORT FOOTBALL FOR CHANGE Stars will appear at fundraising gala for charity co-chaired by LFC legend Jamie Carragher LIVERPOOL’S MEL C will come together with Vernon Kay and Emeli Sandé in order to help young people hit by poverty through a new charitable initiative called Football For Change. Liverpool FC defender Trent AlexanderArnold and his England teammate Conor Coady launched the social mobility movement last year. Football For Change, sponsored by Swinton Insurance and co-chaired by CEO Ian Donaldson and Jamie Carragher, is set to bring a spectacular event to Manchester on 22 September. Hosted by TV favourite Vernon Kay, the gala dinner at Emirates Old Trafford will see songstress Emeli Sandé and Spice Girl Mel C entertain crowds – with a Q&A featuring two football superstars also set to take place. Melanie C says: “I am really proud to give my support to Football For Change and I am looking forward to joining all of the players and everyone else involved on the night. This
is going to be an incredibly special event and I am excited to be part of it.” Emeli Sandé adds: “Football For Change is an incredible initiative and so when I was asked to be part of this special event I immediately said yes. Football For Change is aiming to lift young people from disadvantaged backgrounds out of poverty by providing life-changing opportunities in education and employment. The initiative will distribute grants to organisations supporting young people in the most deprived areas of the country, with a focus on helping them into education, employment and training.

The performers, from Linda Gold’s FunnyBoyz, were invited to the building by organisers from the RLB360 attraction and each marvelled at the history and architecture on display while going behind the scenes, learning about the famous clocks and getting up close and personal with the Liver Birds from the 15th-floor viewpoint. They were also provided with special Crowning Moment vodkas and a guided tour at the attraction, which was decorated especially for the royal weekend with gold and purple bunting while there was also a replica crown placed on top of a Liver Bird statue at the tourist hotspot. Linda Gold says: “We were honoured to be invited down to RLB360 – what could be better than Liverpool queens celebrating the Jubilee at a royal building! “This was the start of an unbelievable weekend for us as people across Europe joined our Linda Gold’s FunnyBoyz drag shows to celebrate the Queen’s 70th year of service in the best possible way with
