ISSUE #520

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of YM Liverpool!

28

First up this month we bring you my interview with the lead singer of a Liverpool indie rock band which has recently announced details of its first new album in 16 years – co-produced by the legendary Nile Rodgers. I caught up with Dave McCabe to find out what inspired The Zutons’ comeback and why working with the Chic frontman gave him more confidence than ever before. Meanwhile, we’ve got all the winners and best pics from the Crowne Plaza as the prestigious YM Liverpool Property & Business Awards returned once again. Hosted by Claire Sweeney, the glittering ceremony saw accolades handed out across 20 categories ranging from Property Developer of the Year and Best Large New Home Development to Property Agency of the Year and Best Affordable Housing Scheme. Elsewhere, the interiors team at John Lewis has an expert guide to setting the Christmas table in style and WineTime’s Jon Atkinson looks at what libations you should be sampling this Yuletide season. Plus we shine the spotlight on a collection of designled new build homes in Ellesmere Port, check out the all-new festive menu at Mamasan in Liverpool ONE, and share our selection of unmissable events taking place in the city over the next four weeks. Finally, on behalf of the entire YM Liverpool team, I wish you a Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year.

After a 16 year wait, The Zutons have announced a brand new album and a UK tour set for early 2024. The multi-platinum selling band released three studio albums between 2004 and 2008, scoring nine UK Top 40 singles including two Top 10s with ‘Why Won’t You Give Me Your Love?’ and the all-conquering ‘Valerie’. We sat down with lead singer and guitarist Dave McCabe to find out about the special feeling which inspired the comeback and how working with the legendary Nile Rodgers gave him more confidence than ever before words lawrence saunders

a good listener. He didn’t tell me I had to change anything. The only thing he suggested I do when I was singing on certain songs was to try a really high harmony. But in the main he just let us go with it. On the song ‘Disappear’, I wrote a spoken word piece about The Zutons travelling the stars and galaxies asking the most powerful question in the universe, “Why?”. I asked Nile if he’d read it out over the top of the end section of the song, thinking he’d just say no. But he jumped in the vocal booth with his chain around his neck and his sunglasses on and did about 20 different takes, all in different styles of himself. It was mind-blowing! It was as though he really does travel around the universe in some spaceship and just makes music in his spare time. He’s one of the coolest people I’ve ever met.

How does it feel to have announced the release of The Big Decider – the first new Zutons album in 16 years? It feels good! It felt like it was never gonna happen, it felt like it couldn’t happen, and now, it is happening! When you break up with a band the first time it’s like splitting up with a girlfriend, it’s hard. Losing the comfort mechanisms you had [with the band] make things even harder as well. I should have been doing stuff over the 16 years [since the last Zutons’ album] though, that’s one regret. I’m just glad [the new album] is happening and I try not to think too much [about the past] because there’s a lot of negativity if you go into it. If you do look back, you have got to remember what was good about it all.

make in life and the maze you have to go through. It sounds negative but the songs are actually quite positive. Your time spent in rehab has actually been credited as sparking a turning point in the positivity of the new album. Has songwriting become more of a cathartic process for you than it once was? When you step out of a big circus and a big drama in your life, you can reflect on it and write about it. For a long time I drank and took drugs everyday – I played guitar but didn’t really write any songs. When you first stop, you’re in a world of chaos because you don’t know yourself and everything’s strange. You’ve got to relax, which is hard without a drink when you’ve been doing it everyday for 20-odd years. It’s still an ongoing battle, it doesn’t just disappear, but I do feel calmer. I always feel cheesy talking about my struggles but I’m just a nicer person when I’m sober.

The band will be heading out on tour next spring in support of the new album, taking in a number of intimate venues across the UK. What was the thinking behind playing mainly smaller shows? The reason we’re doing lots of little gigs is because we need to get up to speed. The fans were amazing last year when we did smaller shows around the country in towns and cities other bands don’t often play. It’s Zutons’ Awareness Month! We’re going around to spread the word! When you do get to the bigger venues, you’ve got those new fans backing you up. The Zutons play Liverpool’s Olympia Theatre on Friday 26 April 2024. Tickets are on sale now. Fans can pre-order The Big Decider (released 26 April 2024) via the band’s official website www.thezutons.com YM Liverpool 5

Capital&Centric submits ‘transformational plans’ for former Littlewoods building Proposals include restoration and repurposing of the 1930s Edge Lane landmark – with working clock reinstated PLANS FOR THE LITTLEWOODS PROJECT – a TV and film campus incorporating Liverpool’s former Littlewoods building – have been submitted by social impact developer Capital&Centric. The team is working with Liverpool City Council as freeholder of the site and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority as funder. A detailed planning application has been lodged with the local authority – featuring new images of what the project will look like upon completion. The plans include the restoration and repurposing of the 1930s Edge Lane building, with a working clock reinstated on the iconic tower. As well as two new 20,000 sq ft studios for big budget productions on the adjoining land, the proposals also feature spaces for offices, workshops, studio support facilities and an education facility. Tenants and visitors will also be able to take in views across the city from a new roof garden.

There are also plans to make the building more accessible to surrounding communities. The former canteen which was housed in a barrel-vaulted hangar is to be transformed into a multi-purpose screening and performance zone, which will be for the use of occupiers on site, and then open up to the public out of hours. It will feature five small format cinema screens, an outdoor performance space and a permanent foodhall. The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority has committed up to £17 million to develop The Depot – two 22,000 sq ft film and TV studios now open off Edge Lane and managed by Liverpool Film Office – and larger studios in the adjacent Littlewoods building as part of Mayor Steve Rotheram’s vision to turn the city region into the ‘Hollywood of the North’.

Liverpool law firm supports Radio City’s Mission Christmas 2023 Alder Hey announces plans to open specially designed in-hospital cinema New MediCinema will be the only facility of its type in a solely paediatric hospital in the UK ALDER HEY HAS ANNOUNCED a new partnership to create a state-of-the-art cinema inside its children’s hospital. The specially designed facility, due to open in 2024, will be funded exclusively by Alder Hey Children’s Charity and MediCinema. The colourful cinema will accommodate beds, wheelchairs, and medical equipment and show the latest movies for free to transform the hospital experience for children and young people at Alder Hey. Specialist trained volunteers will be joined by Alder Hey nurses who will have the option of working for the MediCinema outside of their usual rota. These teams will accompany patients and families to screenings, making it possible for them to enjoy the latest films just like many cinemagoers whilst still receiving any care that they need. Once opened, Alder Hey patients and families will be able to access the film screenings free-of-charge. Fiona Ashcroft, chief executive at Alder Hey Children’s Charity, says: “This project is so exciting – the charity already funds so much at Alder Hey that helps to make a hospital stay the best it can be for our children and this new MediCinema will ensure the hospital has that something extra for them too, adding a sprinkle of movie magic to a child’s journey!” Colin Lawrence, CEO of MediCinema, adds: “We are so proud to be building our next MediCinema inside Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. We’ve been bringing the benefits of the big screen to patients in NHS hospitals for more than 20 years, and over that time seen the extraordinary range of impact and benefit it can have.”

Caught drink/drug driving – consult the legal experts Emma Smith, director from Paul Crowley & Co Solicitors’ crime department, explains the legal process of being charged with a drink or drug driving offence and what a conviction could mean for you

I

n England and Wales alone, over 85,000 people are charged with drink driving offences every year and the risk of a fatal injury is twice as likely when the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drink and drug driving can not only cause serious accidents, but also lead to a driving ban, a fine and even a custodial sentence.

What is the drink driving limit?

The drink driving limit in England and Wales is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath or 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. However, the level of alcohol in your blood can be affected not just by how much you drink, but a range of other factors, such as your age, weight, and diet. Therefore, it’s impossible to know whether you would be considered over the legal limit after drinking, so you should avoid driving altogether if you’re planning on drinking alcohol.

What are the limits on drug driving?

The drug driving limit depends on which drug has been taken, but if you are found with drugs in your system you won’t be charged if it is an amount below the legal limit.

Here is the limit for some common drugs in micrograms per litre of blood: • Cocaine: 10 µg/L • Cannabis/Delta-9tetrahydrocannabinol: 2 µg/L • Ketamine: 20 µg/L • Heroin/diacetylmorphine: 5 µg/L • Clonazepam: 50 µg/L • Diazepam: 550 µg/L • Methadone: 500 µg/L • Morphine: 80 µg/L • Amphetamine: 250 µg/L

What happens if you are caught drink or drug driving?

If the police have a reasonable suspicion that you might be driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they have the power to ask you to pull over and take a breathalyser or drugs test. If you refuse to provide a specimen for testing (unless you have a reasonable excuse), you could be arrested. If you are found to be over the legal limit you will be taken to the station and re-tested. If you fail the second test, you will be charged with an offence. If you’ve been charged with a drink or drug driving offence, call our dedicated motoring specialists at Paul Crowley & Co. Our friendly team of solicitors are here to guide and advise you throughout the

legal process and help to get the best outcome for you.

What is the penalty for drink or drug driving?

If you are charged with driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you could be facing up to 6 months imprisonment and an unlimited fine, as well as a minimum compulsory driving ban of 12 months if it is your first time, or 3 years if you’ve already been convicted of drink driving within the past 10 years. However, if you’ve been charged with drink driving you may be able to reduce your driving ban (usually by a quarter) by completing a drink driving rehabilitation course. A drink or drug driving conviction can have other consequences too. You could struggle to get insurance and have to pay more, have difficulties travelling to certain countries like the USA, and even be unable to work if you usually drive for your job. If you’ve been charged with a drink or drug driving offence and want to know the penalty you could be facing or what you should do next, Paul Crowley & Co’s expert team of criminal law solicitors are here to help. Mamasan By Angus James |

South East Asian |

Visiting Mamasan earlier this month proved a fantastic way for my partner and I to kick off the Christmas and New Year period. Located on the edge of Liverpool ONE, this Southeast Asian-inspired gem is offering a unique twist on seasonal dining this year with its all-new festive menu. Guests have the choice of two courses for £32pp or three courses for £40pp, as well as a selection of suitably merry drinks packages. We plumped for the more substantial option and began with Hoisin Duck Doughnut and Thai Fried Chicken. The doughnut’s golden exterior hinted at the promise of a unique experience and it didn’t disappoint. The first bite revealed a multitude of flavours with a delicate crunch that gave way to a mouthful of succulent duck. My date’s Thai Fried Chicken was equally as satisfying – crispy, crunchy with a wasabi kick and a sweet Sriracha caramel flavour. Both dishes were fiercely guarded by each of us as they were too good to share! For mains, I chose the Chilli Caramel Smoked Pork Belly. The pork was tender,

perfectly smoked, and the nasi goreng fried rice provided a lovely textural contrast – each bite as tender as the notes of a Christmas carol! My partner’s Confit Peking Duck was a real showstopper as well. An Asian take on the classic British roast dinner, this delightful dish featured more of that luscious duck accompanied this time by pickled cucumber, miso-glazed carrot and double roast potatoes. Well and truly stuffed, we almost skipped the final course but thankfully our amiable server was on hand to convince us otherwise. What a delightful climax to the evening it turned out to be. The Sticky Toffee Pudding with poached Asian pear was a masterful twist on a traditional British dessert. The juicy green fruit added a lightness which elegantly complemented the richness of the pudding. But what truly set Mamasan apart was its drinks offering – each one a testament to the artistry of the mixologist’s craft. We perhaps a little too gleefully indulged in the festive beverage package, savouring a selection of prosecco, the warmth of house wine, and the festive zing of bespoke cocktails. Heading for home, we reflected on an evening which was nothing short of spectacular. The restaurant’s commitment to quality, creativity and customer satisfaction shone through in every dish. For anyone looking to celebrate the season with a unique and memorable dining experience, Mamasan is a must-visit.

WINE

It's beginning to feel a lot like

Christmas

*EXCLUDES BIN ENDS / PROMOTIONAL LINES, SPIRITS, LIQUEURS, CHAMPAGNE & BEERS

Jon Atkinson looks at what libations you should be sampling over the festive period WELL, WHAT ELSE were we going to discuss in a December column!? Somewhat inevitably, this month I’m looking at what liquid refreshment might brighten up the forthcoming festive period. December is our busiest time of year in the wine trade, and as ever, I’ll be working seven days a week right up to Christmas Eve. So once Christmas finally arrives I am ready to firstly, catch up on some sleep and secondly, to enjoy the wonderful excesses of food and drink as we push the boat out once again! On Christmas morning, we like to get up reasonably early and start the day with tea and toast ahead of a nice long walk with the dogs. Once back in the warm, breakfast ‘proper’ will be scrambled eggs with either smoked salmon or kippers. Either way, it will be accompanied by fizz, be it Champagne or a decent quality sparkler from elsewhere – the only way to start the day’s festivities IMHO! The excellent Crémant from Bollingerowned Langlois Chateau is a seriously good alternative to Champagne, representing great quality at £17.75! However, if Champagne it must be, then the stunning wines from Champagne Boizel start at just £29.95 and are highly recommended, with my personal favourite being their magnificent ‘Grand Vintage’ 2012 at £53.50. My next port of call will be Sherry – not terribly popular, but I am a huge fan and always enjoy a chilled glass (or three!) of bone-dry Fino or Manzanilla. I adore these wines but am aware that they are something of an acquired taste and don’t suit everyone, but for me, they are a superb aperitif and serve to whet the palate beautifully. Plus, if you are starting to feel peckish at this stage, give it a try with some salted almonds – a marvellous pairing! Our choice of white and red wine on the day will be determined by what we are eating, but the white is almost always from France, most likely Burgundy! This much-fabled region in the centre East of France produces the best Chardonnay (and Pinot Noir for reds) but will usually set you back a pretty penny because it’s deemed to be the best and demand is global, but the region is relatively tiny. To the north of Burgundy, Chablis

is ever popular, and we have 1’er Cru Montmain 2021 from the very highly regarded Gérard Tremblay on offer at just £23.99, down from £29.50. This is classic, bone-dry and mineral wine – limpid in appearance with a refreshingly racy, elegant palate – delicious! If turkey is the name of the game, then Burgundy of the red persuasion will definitely fit the bill, and we have a wonderful Mercurey 1’er Cru ‘Clos l’Evêque’ 2018 from Le Manoir Murisaltien at just £27.99, down from £39.50! A delicious, succulent red that ably showcases the value to be found on the Côtes Chalonnaise. However, many people opt for something fullerflavoured for Christmas lunch/dinner such as goose or rib of beef. If that’s on the menu this year, then something more robust is called for. Châteauneuf-duPape is a perennial favourite and an obvious candidate, but it does come at something of a premium. If you enjoy this style of wine, then there are plenty of good alternatives from around that area of the southern Rhône and one of my absolute favourites is the Grande Réserve 2020 from Walter McKinley’s superb Domaine de Mourchon. A fabulously rich, concentrated and savoury blend of Grenache and Syrah from 60-year-old vines that would put many a Châteauneuf to shame (£22.75). I don’t have a particularly sweet tooth (although I do love dessert wines!), but for many people, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without Christmas pudding, cake and mince pies! The received wisdom on a wine pairing is that the wine should be at least as sweet as the dessert, ideally sweeter. With festive puddings, you’ll need something with plenty of gumption and I think that the Leone ‘aged tawny’ from Lou Miranda Estate in the Barossa Valley is just the ticket! Being made in Australia, this can’t be called ‘Port’ but that is essentially what it is, albeit a lot sweeter and richer than a conventional Tawny from Porto! Something a little different and absolutely delicious – £21.50/50cl. Whatever you decide to go with for your festive drinking I hope that it drinks well and makes for a wonderful festive feast – Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year!

Wayne & Coleen Rooney help charity hit £1.1m fundraising total Football For Change aims to provide better life chances for young people growing up in poverty

A

charity launched by football superstars has now raised more than £1.1 million since 2021 following a star-studded gala in Manchester. Headline performer Olly Murs had celebrities such as Wayne and Coleen Rooney partying into the early hours at Emirates Old Trafford last month. Football For Change was launched in 2021 by Trent Alexander-Arnold, Conor Coady and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher alongside Swinton Insurance and leading PR firm ThisGeneration Communications (TGC). TGC organised the third annual gala and secured an unmissable entertainment bill, with performances from Beverley Knight, Tinie Tempah and Olly Murs, and a Q&A between Peter Crouch, Wayne Rooney and Jamie Carragher. In April, Football For Change released over £150,000 of funding to charities supporting young people to build better futures, with 16 organisations receiving major funding of up to £10,000 including Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, Everton in the Community, Liverpool FC Foundation and The Inclusive Hub. Football For Change has also sent more than 100 disadvantaged young people to the United States of America for a sports and education retreat and helped homeless youngsters into work and accommodation in Glasgow alongside rock legend and patron of the initiative, Sir Rod Stewart, who headlined the inaugural gala in 2021. Soulstress Beverley Knight, who opened the gala, had the crowd on their feet early in the evening before Vernon Kay took over hosting duties. Sky Sports presenter Pete Graves then turned auctioneer with a series of incredible, once-in-a-lifetime prizes available. Star names in attendance included Gemma Owen, Conor Coady, Natasha Hamilton, Christine McGuinness, Ricky Hatton, Lucy Fallon, Andy Cole, Joleon Lescott, Angela Rayner MP and Olivia and Alex Bowen. Change, which is fantastic. He can see the work we are doing. Beverley, Tinie, Peter and Vernon too, they were all just brilliant. It means so much to the charity. “The event was a success from start to finish and it will not stop here. Football For Change will continue to help those who need it most.” Football For Change was launched in partnership with public relations leader Dan Hughes and his agency, ThisGeneration Communications (TGC). Dan added: “It is another momentous evening for Football For Change. To raise over £1.1m in under three years is a stunning achievement. “All the footballers, celebrities, performers and business leaders here tonight, and those who have helped along the way, understand the magnitude of what Football For Change is achieving. “Football For Change is a charity changing the lives of those less fortunate and this money will raise further opportunities to directly help young people in need.”

An expert guide to dressing the

Christmas table Set the table for friends, family and good food – the John Lewis way

22 YM Liverpool

INTERIORS

IF THERE’S ONE TIME IN THE YEAR when you can really go to town with tablescaping, Christmas is surely it. It’s all part of the tradition and excitement that stretches from Christmas Eve dinner to New Year’s Eve, with the mighty Christmas Day dinner itself in between. What you put on the table should match what you’ll be serving and set the scene for sharing a special moment. Whether you’re hosting a big group or arranging a smaller, more intimate feast, there are easy ways to impress. Mixing and matching tableware is fun for place settings – just keep to a common theme to create a rhythm in the mix up of plates and glasses. A loose central garland of foliage can look wonderful on a long table and will still leave room for the sprouts and gravy boat, while baubles and decorations with simple paper tags make great place settings that guests can take away as keepsakes. “I love nature for a Christmas table and always have greenery and berries with lots and lots of candles,” says designer Fiona Leahy. “And then there’s that whimsical side too – the baubles, crackers and snow globes. I love it all.” So whether you want colourful glamour or prefer the more relaxed cottage or Scandi look, we have beautiful ideas that will make sitting down to dinner with those you love even more special this Christmas. Cheers!

GARDENING

IF THERE IS ONE THING that takes me back to Christmases of years gone by, it’s seeing a box of ‘Eat Me’ dates. Every year my mother would buy the obligatory box, knowing full well that no one would touch them. My brother and I thought they looked like fat cockroaches, so unless she ate them herself, with the plastic twig that came in every box, they would end up at the back of a kitchen cupboard to be found the following year looking even more shrivelled and disgusting than before. These days I love this ugly fruit and I’m glad it’s enjoying somewhat of a renaissance. The plump juicy Medjool variety in particular is very popular and readily available in supermarkets. Dates are the sweet chewy fruit of the palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera) and only grow in extremely hot climates. With a very high natural sugar content, they are rich in iron, fibre and antioxidants. It’s no surprise then that the date’s powerful health benefits have been valued since ancient times. Records show that the fruit was part of a staple diet for the Babylonians more than 8,000 years ago. Native to the Middle East, they are now available all year round here in the UK. A healthy substitute for refined sugar, dates can be used as a natural sweetener and offer a fantastic quick energy boost. Forget those sugary drinks after a workout, simply pop a few dates for an instant pick me up. Don’t worry about a sugar crash later either, as the date’s high fibre content helps slow digestion. Fresh dates can be stored in the fridge for months, even longer in the freezer, whilst dried dates will last for about a year in a fridge and for about two if frozen. There are many ways to eat dates and since I’ve written this piece, I’ve found myself putting them into everything! Here are a few of my mouth-watering ideas: Stuffed fresh Medjool dates with cream cheese mixed with chopped nuts are delicious festive fare – especially when served with a nice glass of port. A date fondue, with melted dark chocolate for dipping and bowls of toasted coconut for coating, is sensational and perfect with a glass of fizz. I can’t forget my regular breakfast smoothie either. I’ve been blending four or five dates in with my usual banana and beetroot base. Not only does this add extra fibre, but the natural sugars help boost energy levels too – helping me stay fuelled for longer. Try stirring a handful of chopped dates and some chilli flakes into a beef casserole as I did recently, it certainly livened things up. The fruit added a sweet richness to what would have otherwise been a rather boring stew. Dates taste great in many Moroccan tagine dishes as well and are particularly good with lamb. Medjool are probably the most popular these days both dried and fresh, followed by Noor and Zahidi. Whatever you think about this fruit, I do hope I’ve managed to tempt you if you’ve not already started ‘dating’.

Sticky Date Pudding with Toffee Sauce A family favourite – a delicious moist sponge with a creamy toffee sauce, it certainly gives Christmas pudding a run for its money. Why not give it a try! INGREDIENTS (SERVES 6) 250g chopped dates (fresh or dried)

225g self-raising flour

300ml water

For the sauce

125g softened butter

300ml double cream

125g caster sugar 1 tbsp vanilla extract

150g soft light brown sugar

3 eggs

60g butter

1 tsp baking powder

METHOD 1. Place the chopped dates into a small saucepan, cover with water and bring to a boil. Simmer on low heat for five minutes until soft and pulpy. Leave to cool then puree the dates using a blender. It’s up to you how smooth you want this, I prefer mine with some texture left. 2. Grease a 1.5-litre ovenproof pudding basin and place it inside a roasting tin. 3. Put the butter, sugar, vanilla and eggs into a bowl and beat with an electric whisk for two minutes, then gradually add the flour and baking powder until the mixture is pale and creamy. 4. Take two tablespoons of the date puree and set it aside for the sauce. Stir the rest of the puree into the pudding mixture using a metal spoon. Then put the mixture into the prepared pudding basin. Pour boiling water to a depth of 1.5cm into the tin around the basin and then bake the pudding in a preheated oven at 180°C for 35-40 minutes. 5. Put half the cream, brown sugar and butter in a pan and heat gently to dissolve the sugar. Bring to the boil and simmer for about five minutes until it turns a dark toffee colour. Stir in the date puree you have set aside and the remaining cream. Pour into a jug. 6. To loosen the pudding from the basin, carefully run a knife around the rim and sides, then holding a serving plate firmly on top of the basin, invert it quickly. You should be able to lift the basin off cleanly, leaving your majestic pudding ready to be smothered in sauce and served.

UNTIL NEXT TIME, HAPPY GARDENING. HEATHERMARSHYM@GMAIL.COM

Former Toxteth nightclub to be transformed into luxury apartment scheme

Liverpool-based property firm EW Developments is leading on the £3.5m redevelopment of Jamaica House WORK HAS BEGUN TO TRANSFORM Jamaica House in Toxteth into 25 luxury apartments. The building on Upper Parliament Street was originally a key part of the Liverpool 8 community but now lies derelict. Opened by Leonard Airborne in the 1970s, Jamaica House was one of around 40 nightclubs and social clubs which were once located in Toxteth. In 1983, two years after the riots, Jamaica House featured as part of a BBC special report into the racist door policies facing Liverpool’s black community. Whilst many city centre clubs operated a discriminatory whites-only entry policy, venues such as Jamaica House and others in L8 were a sanctuary for party-goers and musicians of all ethnicities. The building later became a hotel but has now sat abandoned and boarded up for more than 15 years. Liverpool-based property firm EW Developments will transform Jamaica House into 25 apartments, with car parking facilities and private access for residents. Liverpool firms R&R Design and M-Tech Electrical have led on the architectural and M&E packages respectively.

EW converted the Our Lady of Good Help Church in Wavertree into 16 new flats earlier this year following its 2019 renovation of an abandoned Victorian building into the successful Phoenix Hotel in Kirkdale. James Winters, co-founder of EW Developments, who runs the business alongside architect Rob Edwards, says: “This is an iconic Liverpool building and EW Developments is proud to play a part in restoring it with a luxury finish. “Jamaica House is in a prime location for access to Liverpool city centre and we believe this redevelopment can help breathe new life into both the building and Toxteth community as a whole. “All of our sites are delivered with a luxurious finish and Jamaica House will be no different. I am so excited to work on this building, with so many memories for so many people, and bring a modern site to the forefront of L8.”
