The Relevancy of Widji’s Mission Today
BY MATT POPPLETON, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Widji’s Mission is simple: to develop in young people respect for one’s self, others, equipment and the environment through wilderness adventure and environmental education. It’s a simple statement but it captures our focus on youth, our core values and our year round programs. As students and campers arrive at Widjiwagan they are all welcomed with this mission statement in mind—through the “Respect Talk.” I have witnessed the importance of this simple statement, from how it applies to a successful Widji experience as well as transferring to one’s life.
The Respect Talk is an interactive activity of discussing Widji’s mission and asking for examples on how one would show respect towards the various subjects. Self, “how does one show respect for self?” “Brush your teeth” is a common response… We follow up with other examples like getting plenty of sleep, eating enough food at meals, staying hydrated and having a positive mental attitude. These practices are great for a one- to twoweek trip and beyond. However, the deeper practice of respecting one’s self for today’s teens goes well beyond getting a good night’s sleep. Kids can be overwhelmed with the pressures of today. Social media, high expectations, and a high rate of information at the swipe of a finger, all seem to be contributing factors to an increase in anxiety and depression amongst teens across the country. At Widji, we have increased our training and attention towards mental health to better support both campers and staff. There is still work to be done, but the self-confidence and resiliency that develops through Widji seems more necessary now than ever.
When asked how we show respect towards others, we usually get the same reply “Brush your teeth” ha ha ha…More specific examples include
helping trail mates out on a portage, asking others how they would like to be addressed and treated, and creating a set of group goals. Campers start to learn that they are dependent on others to succeed on their trip. Transferring this practice of respect for others outside of a small trail group though, can be equally challenging in today’s context. Our media and politics don’t offer the best examples of showing respect towards others and while a simple bridge for a trail mate struggling with a canoe on a portage may seem like a simple gesture, the practice of helping others is so important.
Showing respect towards equipment can also elicit some confused looks from kids. Consumption and convenience have become standards in our society that often doesn’t value material objects. At Widji we take great pride in keeping our equipment in good working order and ensuring that gear is treated well and ready to be handed over to the next group and beyond. The Widji community has recently rallied to help restore two historic BN Morris canoes that were originally owned by legendary canoe builder Joe Seliga and his family. The canoes are over 100 years old, but are being restored to be paddled by campers. This care and respect for canoes that could be easily discarded underscores Widji’s mission.
YEAR-ROUND STAFF 2018
Matt Poppleton – Executive Director
Lastly, we end the Respect Talk by acknowledging our respect for the environment. Our brochure indicates that we practice Leave No Trace in the areas that we travel. Traveling lightly and with respect through the beautiful wilderness areas is truly a privilege. The impressions made from those experiences also nurtures a deep respect for the environment beyond our area of travel and the planet itself. I have been so encouraged by the Widji campers and alumni who have organized and taken action around environmental threats like copper nickel mining on the edge of the Boundary Waters and climate change.

Amy Hadow – Summer Program Director

Erik Johnson – Kitchen Manager
Linda Ramacier – Financial Development Director
Jim Schwartz – Canoe Master
Joe Smith – Property Manager
Katie Godfrey – Administrative Coordinator
The relevancy of Widji’s mission and work continues to provide a foundation to successful youth development generation after generation. I have the opportunity to see the immediate results in the confidence of a kid achieving something they never thought possible. I also hear it in the wisdom of Widji alum who share with me how Widji shaped their lives. So in addition to reminding kids to brush their teeth, we hope to also transform their lives. t

Widji statistics tell just part of the 2018 story
BY AMY HADOW, SUMMER PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Ihope to capture the breadth and depth of Widji’s 2018 programming in this article. This goal begs the question, “How does one summarize the experiences of our 786 summer campers, our 1500 Outdoor Learning Program students and the teachers and parent chaperones who join then?” This task feels even more daunting when we take into account the experiences of our 86 Trail Counselors, the folks in our Trail Building and our Office, our Outdoor Learning Program Staff, our Community Board and our Administrative Team. We also served 40 young people through Widji Leaders, our academic year service, leadership and community building group. Widji builds community and touches the lives of people of all ages in countless ways. I will try to summarize these experiences by sharing a few interesting facts and statistics and conclude by sharing the learnings of Widji campers in their own words.
Numbers and statistics capture the breadth of Widji’s programming. They tell you that our 786 summer campers came from 39 states and 6 different countries. Sixty-eight of those campers participated in BOLD or GOLD trips, 37 went on Voyageur and Mountaineer trips and 70 started their Widji experience as Pathfinders. 21% of our campers went backpacking while 79% went canoeing. Collectively, Widji’s 2018 summer campers have spent 1,759 summers at Widji. Last summer, they went on 184 trips and had adventures in 6 US states and 5 Canadian provinces or territories. These campers and their counselors consumed 1480 lbs of American cheese, that’s 296 five pound blocks! Cheese (and sausage, peanut butter, noodles, tvp and all of the trail favorites) powered the bodies, minds and spirits of our campers to carry them countless miles on
foot or by canoe through some of the most beautiful natural spaces of North America. Our 4 Voyageur groups alone, collectively traveled about 2,000 miles across the arctic based on an average distance of between 500 and 600 miles per group. However, anyone who has experienced a Widji trip, spent a week in a study group or has picked up a young person that they love at the end of their time at camp knows that Widji is about so much more than numbers.
A quick scan of summer camper evaluations shows that our campers are learning important life skills. Widji is about finding inner strength, physical and mental, and personal growth. “Pushing myself into the ‘challenge zone’ is really important in order for me to be able to grow,” wrote one Intro to Canoeing Camper. Another wrote, “I learned that I was stronger than I thought I was.” A third Intro camper simply wrote that they learned “self-worth” —written in tiny all lowercase letters. Campers learn to accept others, to have fun and to cook. I learned that, “it is important not to judge people and to enjoy yourself. (and not to put too much water in your pudding powder!)” writes another camper. Campers build friendships, sometimes surprising themselves with their ability to do so. I learned that “meeting new people and making friends doesn’t happen immediately but after a while you become good friends,” wrote one camper after a 12–day session. Some folks also surprise themselves by finding new sides of their personality. A BWCAW boy canoer learned to “lead by example and be calm every once and a while.” Finally, some folks take away far more practical lessons, such as a Big Horns camper who learned to “wear socks on the road trip.” t
ENROLLMENT HISTORY
2018 YOUTH THRIVE AWARD NOMINEE
We congratulate the 2018 Youth Thrive Award Nominee, Grace Tillotson. Grace is a senior at Saint Paul Central High School. She was a camper at Widji for four summers culminating in summer 2017 with an Explorer trip. She looks forward to a position as a Girls Outdoor Leadership Development Intern over the summer of 2018 and attending Boston College in the fall.
The Widji Administrative Team nominated Grace for the Youth Thrive Award in recognition of her commitment to our school year service and leadership Club, Widji Leaders. Grace has served as a positive and dedicated leader to this group. “We can always count on Grace to show up to service events and to engage fully. We have been particularly impressed by Grace’s efforts to welcome all Widji Leaders participants and the precedence that she sets for engaging with community members while volunteering.”
Grace would describe herself in two words as a “passionate adventurer.” While we agree with Grace’s description, we would also add a few other words like compassionate, inclusive, committed and responsible leader. Congratulations to Grace! We look forward to all of the ways that you will continue to make an impact both within and outside of the Widji community! t
Financial Picture 2018
Every year when we review the financial status of YMCA Camp Widjiwagan, one fact holds as true as the passing of the seasons. The continued support of our community plays an enormous role in helping young people learn and grow from a Widji experience. You’re a part of that community, and we are sincerely grateful for your generous support. Your annual contributions and earnings from Widji’s endowment made up 22% percent of our revenue in 2018.
In total, 589 young people had the chance to hike, ski, snowshoe, paddle, ski, sing, learn about the night sky and cook over an open fire at Widji in 2018. This figure includes 61 summer campers and 35 participants in YMCA BOLD and GOLD programs (Boys and Girls Outdoor Leadership Development). In addition, through their schools or other groups, 493 young people participated in our Outdoor Learning Program.
As an organization within the larger organization of the YMCA of the Greater Twin Cities, Widji’s financial picture is unique. Our finances look different than those of other nonprofits since there are some overhead costs such as payroll, marketing and communications that we don’t cover. Our financial relationship with the greater association is an important advantage for providing financial strength and resilience through the years.
The charts at right offer a snapshot of Widji’s revenues and expenditures. They’re a visual representation of the financial base that helps us
advance our mission of developing in young people a respect for self, community and the environment through wilderness adventure and environmental education.
We couldn’t do it without you. Thank you again for your ongoing support. t

Richard “Dick” Bancroft
Dick Bancroft passed away peacefully on July 16, 2018 just shy of his 91st birthday. He is survived by wife Debbie, son Hunter, daughters Ann, Carrie and Sarah and six grandchildren. Dick was preceded in death by son Bill.
Dick was a self-taught photographer who had a passion for social justice and chronicled the Native American movement for decades. Many of his pictures are in the book “We Are Still Here” published in 2013 by the Minnesota Historical Society. He instilled in his children a since of adventure and a quest to leave a mark.
Dick and Debbie sent their children to Camp Widjiwagan for several adventures and their grandchildren are third generation of campers continuing the legacy. Dick and Debbie have also made it possible for underserved children to have an adventure by contributing to Widjiwagan Annual Fund for more than six decades.
Dean R. Brand
Dean Brand passed away on June 29, 2018. He is survived by his sons Jeff and David, daughters Karen and Julie and six grandchildren. Dean was preceded in death by his beloved wife Beverly.
Dean and Bev were camper and staff parents and camper grandparents at Widjiwagan and Camp du Nord. They were volunteers extraordinary and took on any project when asked, whether it was the Garage Sale, work weekends, office projects, annual campaign—you could always count on the two of them. They were annual fund donors to both camps for more than six decades insuring others needing financial assistance could have the same experiences their family has had.
Dean worked at 3M for 39 years. He enjoyed family, travel, theater, stamp collecting and volunteering for various causes.
Evelyn
“Evie” Buetow
Evie Buetow, 95, walked that last portage to join her paddling partner, Harry, on February 10, 2018 in her home overlooking Lake Superior in Silver Bay. Evie met Harry at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan in 1939 and they married in 1944. Their first canoe trip together was their honeymoon in the BWCA and her last one was when she was 80. The meeting of Evie and Harry has led to a 79-year relationship with the camp as children and grandchildren continued the tradition.
Evie loved canoeing, fishing, cooking, baking, a variety of music for playing and singing, knitting, reading, cross country skiing, church and community involvements. Her home was always open and the coffee pot on with something freshly baked.
Evie is survived by daughter Chris, sons David (Pat), and Eric (Katie Madden), six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
The Buetow Family legacy will live on at Widjiwagan through the Harry and Evelyn Buetow Family Endowment Fund, insuring future campers can experience the wilderness as their family has.

Gary Clements
Gary Clements died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by love on May 12, 2018. He is survived by his loving wife Jane, daughter Kathryn, son Greg and two granddaughters.
Gary grew up in Nebraska in the 1950s and attended Widjiwagan in his teen years where his love for wilderness adventure and faith grew strong. In 1961 he was a Voyageur and then was a counselor for several years. At Widji, he met fellow counselor Jane Gilje, and they married in 1967. They passed on their love of the wilderness and Widjiwagan to their children. Both Gary and Jane have contributed in countless ways through service projects, committees, reunions and generous support.
Gary was a counselor and he was also a coach, teacher, librarian, media specialist and web designer.
Gary’s legacy will live on through the Gilje Clements Family Endowment Fund, providing countless children and alumni with the Widjiwagan experience in years ahead.
Frederick “Fred” Commers
Fred Commers passed away on May 30, 2018 and is survived by sons Chris, Tim and Steven and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Molly.
Fred and Molly sent their three sons to Camp Widjiwagan, and two of their boys became Voyageurs and counselors. He was proud of the grandchildren who became campers. Fred was always there to support Molly when she served on the Widjiwagan Board in the 1980s. To this day, the Commers
Family involvement and support has continued for five decades.
Fred was known for his dry wit, love of oatmeal and modest lifestyle. He quietly supported the success of his family and friends; his life reflected his faith. He spent his career at the family business, Commers Interiors and later in commercial real estate.
Merle and Sandra Mattson
Merle Mattson passed away on July 9, 2018 and Sandra Mattson passed away just 15 days later on June 24, 2018. They were both 80 years of age.
Merle and Sandy are survived by daughters, Laura Sullivan and Melinda Mattson; son, Steve Mattson; five granddaughters and several great grandchildren.
Merle was a pharmacist known for his love of golf, cribbage, flying, well written books, Civil War history, good music, and his ability to tell a joke and laugh at himself with others.
Sandra taught kindergarten before attending to the growing needs of her family. She enjoyed ceramics and needlepoint— winning State Fair awards for several of her works—and volunteering at her church including chairing the annual fundraising bazaar.
Sandra was a Widjiwagan camper in the 1950s and she and Merle have attended several Widjiwagan reunions. They sent their children to Widjiwagan and Camp St. Croix, and have supported Widji’s Annual Fund and the Laura and Frank Nelson Memorial Fund for decades.
Memorials were directed to Laura and Frank Nelson Memorial Fund, benefiting Widjiwagan and Camp St. Croix. That was the first endowment fund established in 1962, perpetuating Sandra’s grandparent legacy and that of all other family members over four generations.
Frederick Forro
Frederick Forro, age 94, peacefully passed July 22, 2018 after a long bout of dementia. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Scott, who was a Widji camper. Fred is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Dorothy, sons David (Jane), Gary (Jan), daughter Debra, one granddaughter, three great granddaughters.
Fred was a professor of Molecular Biology and Biophysics at Yale and later became the Chairman of the Genetics and Cell Biology Department at the University of Minnesota College of Biological Sciences.
Throughout his life he loved fishing, music, golf, photography, sketching and watercolor painting. Fred and Dorothy enjoyed a very active life of traveling and hiking around the world.
At the tragic loss of Fred and Dorothy’s son Scott, they established an endowment fund in his memory at Camp Widjiwagan. The proceeds from the fund has provided financial assistance for underserved campers and perpetuated Scott’s legacy for many decades.
In Memoriam
Zachary James Richards
Zachary Richards, age 36, died on April 15, 2018, after a long struggle with mental illness.
Zach, a Camp Widjiwagan alumni, loved the outdoors and participated in many canoeing and backpack trips. His favorite trips were backpacking in the mountains out west. He was an enthusiastic camper and hiker, very knowledgeable about the wilderness, and a keen observer of the world around him.
Zach graduated from St. Paul Central High School in 2000. While at Central, he ran cross country, spent four years on the swim team, and played trumpet in the orchestra. Most importantly, he received an excellent education from the outstanding teachers at Central that prepared him for future academic success. Following graduation, Zach attended Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and University of Minnesota Duluth, where he graduated with a degree in chemical engineering.
Zach is survived by his dad, Jim Richards; his mom, Linde Eckstrom and stepdad, Chris Rohrer; and his brother, Ethan Richards. His family finds comfort in knowing Zach is at peace.
Dr. John M. Scanlan
John Scanlan, age 81, died gracefully at home on October 26, 2018 surrounded by his family. He is survived by loving wife
Dorothy Dittberner Scanlan, daughters Sarah Boggess, Rachel Scanlan, Beth Scanlan, Martha Scanlan, Norah Garrison and 12 grandchildren.
John and Dorothy were Widjiwagan camper and staff parents and currently camper grandparents. John was always there to support Dorothy when she served on the camp board for six years. The Scanlans contributed to Widjiwagan’s annual campaign for six decades, ensuring financial assistance is available to qualified campers needing a campership.
As a doctor of psychiatry, John spent much of his medical career in county hospitals and teaching hospitals. Throughout his career, John worked to improve healthcare services and medical care for ordinary and extraordinary people. John is highly regarded for establishing the nation’s first community hospital-based comprehensive Hearing Impaired Health and Mental Health Program. He did groundbreaking work in mental health, including treatment for sexually abused handicapped children, managed health care and telemedicine.
Judson “Judd” LeRoy Welliver
Judd Welliver, age 94, of Grand Rapids, Minnesota passed away September 26, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne and grandson, Elliott. He is survived by his children, Mary Hickey, Stephen (Ann) Welliver, Libby (Dennis) Devere, and David Welliver, eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and friend Tammy.
Judd was born in St. Paul on September 29, 1923, and spent the summers of his youth at his beloved Camp Widjiwagan. He was a camper, a trail guide, and spent several Christmas vacations at camp working for the caretaker, Wilbur Jeffrey. Several of his children also attended Camp Widjiwagan. He was a veteran of WWII and was awarded the Bronze Star for his actions during the Battle of the Bulge. After returning from the war, Judd received his undergraduate degree in forestry from the University of Minnesota, and his Masters degree from Yale University. He then founded Lake States Tree Service, a successful business specializing in the clearing and maintenance of utility lines across a five-state area of the Midwest.
Judd was an accomplished man in life but to his family and friends, three attributes stand out … his great love of family and loyalty to friends, his love of his country, and his devotion to nature and the outdoors. Judd’s legacy will live on at Camp Widjiwagan through the General Endowment Fund, which provides financial assistance to campers who can not afford the experience that he had in his teen and college years.
