Member Spotlight Nancy & Bonnie: Friends Who Keep Moving Together Nancy and Bonnie first became friends through church, and now they’ve found another place to connect —the YMCA. Bonnie has been a member since 2020 and encouraged Nancy to join her. When Nancy became eligible to join through her insurance in July 2025, she jumped at the opportunity. Since then, the two have enjoyed coming to the YMCA together and encouraging each other along the way. Bonnie (pictured left) joined the YMCA after retiring from NDSU in 2020. Her first year at the Y came during COVID, when there were often only a few people around. She would regularly come to the Y and sometimes find herself as the only person in the pool. She quickly became friends with the lifeguards and staff, who provided encouragement and a sense of connection during a time when so much of life felt isolated. Those relationships have lasted, and today she still enjoys running into the familiar faces she met during that time. Staying active has become an important part of Bonnie’s daily routine. She enjoys water aerobics three times a week, SilverSneakers four days a week, Tai Chi, and working out in the small pool. Each activity gives her a different way to work on her strength, balance, endurance, and mobility. After experiencing several injuries over the years, Bonnie has made improving her walking and balance a personal goal. Her physical therapist has noticed a big difference in her progress and encouraged her to keep going.

For Nancy (pictured right), her connection to the YMCA began nearly 50 years ago while she was attending nursing school. She worked at the front desk, where she wore a headset and used the switchboard to connect incoming calls to the appropriate staff members. Her YMCA memories became part of the Gator Swim Team and had the opportunity to compete at Y Nationals in Fort Lauderdale during her senior year of high school. With so many special memories connected to the YMCA, Nancy’s return in 2025 has brought her Y story full circle. Now, Nancy is starting a new chapter focusing on her own health and wellness. After joining in 2025, she began participating in SilverSneakers, her first experience with organized group fitness classes. While she is disciplined about working out at home, attending classes has been a great extension of her routine. After having knee replacement surgery in April and completing physical therapy, she is

continuing to work on her strength and mobility at the Y. For Nancy and Bonnie, the YMCA has become another part of their friendship. Outside of the Y, they attend church together and twice a month volunteer packing meals for people experiencing homelessness. Nancy enjoys camping and traveling, while Bonnie loves getting out on her e-bike. Having the YMCA as another place to spend time together has made their friendship even stronger.
