Member Spotlight Generations of Strength, Community, and Connection Through the YMCA - Jeanette For YMCA member Jeanette and her granddaughter Amber, the YMCA has been much more than a gym or workplace. For over 17 years, it has been a meaningful part of their lives and personal growth. After retiring, Jeanette wanted a place where she could prioritize her well-being, improve her health, and build strength. When she joined the YMCA, she was immediately inspired to attend as many days a week as possible. With experience as both a lifeguard and swim instructor, swimming has been an important part of Jeanette’s life for many years. After becoming a member, Jeanette started attending aquatics group fitness classes and continued building her strength. Wanting an even bigger challenge, she signed up for a lap swimming challenge. She quickly began racking up miles in the pool, earning a t-shirt for every 50 miles completed. By the end of the challenge, Jeanette swam an incredible total of 300 miles. The challenge motivated her to keep going, and she loved tracking each new milestone. Family has always been at the center of Jeanette’s life. She taught Amber to swim at a young age and shared her love of the water with all her grandchildren. As Jeanette spent more time at the YMCA, she

began bringing the grandkids along to swim too. Amber still remembers sleepovers at her grandma’s house, followed by early-morning trips to the Y together. Those memories eventually helped shape Amber’s future. Throughout high school and college, Amber worked in the YMCA childcare program and grew from a Y Leader to her current role as School-Age Director. Amber often says that her grandma’s decision to bring her to the YMCA as a child played a

major role in where she is today. Now working at Fercho, Amber has the opportunity to see Jeanette even more frequently. When Jeanette talks about what she loves most about the YMCA, she always talks about the people. To her, the YMCA feels like family. Members check in on one another, send cards after surgeries, organize meal trains, and support each other through life’s ups and downs. The friendships she has built through the aquatics community means so much to her. Their care for others extends beyond the YMCA. Every year, the group hosts a Christmas potluck and collects donations for local charities.

Jeanette helps organize many of these efforts by taking photos, coordinating gifts, and helping find organizations in need. Her kindness and dedication have made a lasting impact on the people around her. Jeanette and Amber’s story is a wonderful example of the YMCA’s mission in action. Through the
