On board Amtrak’s Empire Builder, you’ll see some of the best of America’s rugged wilderness as you travel along major portions of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, much of which is still only accessible by train. If you start the journey in Chicago, route highlights include passing through the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, the simple beauty of the plains of North Dakota, the vast expanse of the high desert and Big Sky Country, the stunning Cascade Range and the spectacular Columbia River Gorge. The East Glacier train station is just steps away from the park’s entrance and all the stunning glaciers, waterfalls, and mountains the area is known for. The impressive, timbered Glacier Park Lodge sits to the left of the station and is a wonderful option for overnight stays at the park. Constructed from trees estimated to be over 600 years old, the lodge was built by the Great Northern Railway to promote rail travel and to attract tourists to this beautiful area. Nowadays, the park is one of the most popular stops in the entire Amtrak system.

THE PARK IS A WATER LOVER'S DELIGHT
Amtrak's Empire Builder route stops at East Glacier Park station in East Glacier Park Village, just steps from the park entrance. For decades, it's been a popular seasonal stop for the Empire Builder line, open from April to October and serving mostly visitors to Glacier National Park.
There are a whopping 762 lakes in Glacier National Park, 131 of which are named. The largest lake in the park is Lake McDonald, at roughly 10 miles long, over a mile wide, and nearly 500 feet deep. While Lake McDonald isn't considered a prime fishing lake, visitors flock to catch a sight of the many wild animals that live along its shore, including moose, black bears, and mule deer. The park is also home to 2,865 miles of streams, the longest of which is Upper McDonald Creek at 25.8 miles.
MOUNTAIN GOATS ARE A SYMBOL OF THE PARK If you're visiting Glacier National Park, it won't be long before you spot the agile mountain goat, perhaps hanging out on the edge of a steep mountain cliff. The official symbol of the park due to its prevalence and perseverance in the area, the hardy animal has made a name for itself, carefully watching visitors from a safe distance or foraging for food. Their special hooves allow them to easily climb a variety of terrain, from rock to ice, with ease.
HISTORIC STRUCTURES ABOUND There are more than 350 structures within the boundaries of the park, including chalets, hotels, visitor centers, barracks, and more, all of which appear on the National Register of Historic Places.
'JAMMERS' ARE THE TRANSPORTATION OF CHOICE
PLANTS AND ANIMALS ARE PLENTIFUL
Visitors to Glacier National Park can enjoy tours of the park in style in historic red buses called “Jammers.” Originally introduced to national parks in the 1930s in an effort to reduce car traffic, this distinctive fleet of coach cars was restored and modified in 2002, with a number converted to run on alternative fuel. Many repeat visitors to the park say their drive along Going-to-the-Sun Road in the vintage Jammer bus with the wind in their hair was the best part!
Plant and animal species thrive in Glacier National Park, with 69 species of mammals, 278 species of birds, and more than 2,000 species of plants and vegetation. Wildlife tours are popular among visitors, and sightings are frequent in the warmer spring and summer months.
GOING-TO-THE-SUN ROAD IS AN AWARD WINNER One of the most iconic stretches of land of Glacier National Park is arguably Going-to-the-Sun Road, the 53-mile-long scenic drive that opened way back in 1933 and boasts some of the most breathtaking natural views in North America. The road is famous, too, having appeared in the opening credits of the classic horror film “The Shining,” and having received several distinctive honors, including being registered as a National Historic Landmark, a National Historic Place, and a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. The road crosses the Continental Divide via Logan Pass, which can accumulate up to 80 feet of snow in the winter.
MOUNTAINS AND MORE MOUNTAINS There are a total of 184 mountains in Glacier National Park, the tallest of which is Mount Cleveland at 10,466 feet. Logan Pass, the highest point on the Going-to-the-Sun Road, located along the Continental Divide, comes in at 6,646 feet.
THE PARK IS HOME TO 26 GLACIERS, BUT THAT NUMBER IS SHRINKING Glacier National Park is home to 26 glaciers, down from approximately 150 in 1850. That number is expected to continue its rapid decline as climate changes shrink their size, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Of the existing glaciers, the largest is Harrison Glacier, at 1.6 million square meters.

Today, you will experience the majesty of Yellowstone, the world’s first national park. Formed from the remains of an extinct supervolcano that exploded around 600,000 years ago, the park is full of alpine lakes, flowing rivers, jagged peaks, expansive forests, hot springs and geysers. Your included tour allows you to experience all of this while stopping at a number of thrilling landmarks such as the world-famous geyser, Old Faithful. DAY 2: SALT LAKE CITY Keep your camera handy as your train makes its way west. This journey from Chicago takes you across the waving fields of grain that make up the Great Plains and through the soaring peaks of the Rocky Mountains. DAY 3: YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK Awake this morning and continue on to Yellowstone. Your journey takes in some amazing mountain scenery along the way.
DAY 5: OVERNIGHT ABOARD AMTRAK You are transported back to Salt Lake City today to board the train heading to San Francisco and Yosemite National Park. Enjoy dinner and spectacular views of the city at a popular restaurant before departing on the train in the evening.
DAY 6: SAN FRANCISCO This evening, you will arrive in San Francisco. Check into your hotel to relax, or head out to enjoy dinner or some sights. The evening is yours.
DAY 7: YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK Today’s trip to Yosemite National Park is one of the highlights of your journey. After being picked up from your hotel, you will ride through California’s agricultural heartland. This is a relaxing trip through some very charming countryside. HISTORY OF GLACIER PARK LODGE Glacier Park Lodge was built over a century ago by the Great Northern Railway. The immense timbers that support the lodge were around 500 to 800 years old when they were cut. There are a total of 60 timbers. They are 36 to 42 inches in diameter, 40 feet long, and all retain their bark. The timbers in the lobby are Douglas fir, and the verandas are supported by cedars from Washington. Originally part of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, the hotel site was purchased from the Piegan, a tribe of the Blackfeet Nation. The site was in a settlement then known as Midvale. When the present railway depot was built in 1912, the area was renamed Glacier Park Station and then became known as East Glacier Park in 1950.
Hotel is 100% nonsmoking Handicap accessible: Yes. Access to all rooms is via stairway only. However, there are handicap rooms available on main floor upon request. Pets not allowed NOTE: In keeping with the era in which the lodge was built, televisions, elevators, air conditioning, and in-room coffeemakers are not available.
The section of the lodge containing the lobby and dining room was built in 1912-13 and opened to guests on June 15, 1913. The entrance features a massive archway, while the lobby is composed of 24 Douglas fir columns. While some timbers have been replaced throughout the years, many of the originals still stand today. The lodge and its grounds honor the Blackfeet Nation, and guests will find artifacts and items of significance to the Blackfeet Nation members throughout the property. The lodge was built under the direction of James J. Hill, who hired a group of Indigenous peoples to greet guests and perform songs and dances on the hotel grounds after it first opened. Today, 161 guest rooms can accommodate over 500 people. Visitors can enjoy the restaurant, lounge, coffee stand, gift shop featuring local Blackfeet crafts, Red Bus Tours, an outdoor swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course, a nine-hole pitch ‘n putt course, and spa featuring massages and other relaxing treatments. All rooms are rustic yet comfortable accommodations with queen, double and/or twin beds, private bathrooms, and direct-dial telephones. Family rooms have multiple beds. Bell service is available. Access to all rooms is via stairway only. A limited number of ADA-accessible rooms are available and are booked based on space available. Only designated guide, service, and/or hearing companion animals are allowed in the l odge.
