The idea of this project was originally developed by my partner and I. The project was selected to participate in the inter-university conference for landscape architecture studies. After 2 years of professional experience, I decided to advance this project by further developing the detailed design. I will mainly focus on the centre Chinese garden area. --Yiesha Peng (2023)

Healthy Ageing and Age-friendly city

Facing a rapidly ageing population, Taiwan will become a super-aged society by 2025.

However, the lack of inclusive, accessible, and equitable urban public spaces, as well as limited good quality care homes have threatened the quality of life for the increasing elderly population. Therefore, the goal of this project is to support seniors ageing well by creating an age-friendly environment and improving the quality of residential care facilities in Taiwan, especially under the limited urban land availability

Through studying both current urban planning laws and senior-centred design, we expected this project as a demonstration project to make Taiwanese society future-ready

1. Establish a landscape mechanism to form ageing friendly compact communities in the urban area.

First targeted Taipei city, where the largest elderly population is located. Then focused on the area of a 500m circle around medical centres.

2. Study the needs of the senior and people with disabilities.

3. Create residential care communities in the urban area for the senior to improve the overall quality of age-friendly environment, and gather the potential resources to support the senior living in poverty and ill-health.

4. Encourage and guide the senior citizens to stick together in order to reintroduce and celebrate their positive social values.

5. Promote this approach throughout Taiwan by enacting related urban planning laws and applying the established landscape mechanism to design residential care facilities.

Target Users

B. Elderly who loves to live in residential care community.

Site analysis

The site, Coast Guard Administration, is located in Taipei educational areas, surrounded by housing and few parks. Slightly away from the commercial areas provide a less complex people

It is mainly used as office & accomodation. No patrol action.

Buildings with exterior corridors provide potential interaction opportunity and external escape routes. Suitable for accomodation.

Dip slope

Adjacent areas should apply landslide prevention approach and avoid physical activities.

The lowest point of the site gathers rain and water flow The existing swimming pool has a big potential to become a retention pond.

The aim of paving design is to enhance the predictability patterns to seperate routes and spaces. For instance, the morning walk routine; the wooden decks welcome people with small pavers leads people to their destination.
