Golden Anniversary

There’s magic that happens on Nantucket in mid-April. The gray days of winter finally give way, the harbor begins to shake off its deep chill, and, seemingly overnight, millions of golden daffodils bloom across our island.

Every year during the last weekend in April, we celebrate Spring by adding to all this natural beauty a variety of fun and whimsical events: a parade of decorated antique cars, a show of elaborately flowered hats and outfits, pups adorned with daffodils, children riding bikes bedecked with blossoms, a tailgate picnic, and a stunning display of blooms at the Nantucket Garden Club’s annual Daffodil Flower Show. Add to all of this plenty of good-natured playfulness, and you have the Nantucket Daffodil Festival. This year, the festival turns 50—a golden anniversary celebrating a half century of fun with engaging events for all.

The story begins with a community member who had a vision and the passion to make it reality. In the fall of 1974, Jean MacAusland, a Nantucket Garden Club member who had extensive gardens here, planted the idea for an island event that would celebrate daffodils and boost the economy during a slim time of year. MacAusland loved the hardy bulbs, and she understood that they thrived in sandy soil, spread naturally, and are distained by hungry deer. On May 2, 1975, the Nantucket Garden Club organized the first Nantucket Daffodil Show, sanctioned by

NHA Brings The Wider World to Nantucket

This April, the Nantucket Historical Association opened an exciting new Featured Exhibition in their Nantucket Whaling Museum that is designed to take visitors on a trip around the globe.

The traveling exhibition The Wider World & Scrimshaw is expansive and culturally far-reaching. Surveying carving traditions that emerged along whaling routes in the Pacific world, the exhibition showcases more than 300 objects and set scrimshaw—the folk art made by whalers on the body parts of whales—in conversation with carved decorative arts and material culture made by Indigenous community members from across Oceania, the Pacific, and the Arctic.

The Nantucket Whaling Museum is the first venue to host this traveling exhibition organized by the New Bedford Whaling Museum and supported by Art Bridges, an organization that creates and supports projects that share works of American art across the United States and its territories. The Wider World & Scrimshaw will be on display there through November 1, 2026.

“The Nantucket Historical Association is pleased to work with our colleagues at the New Bedford Whaling Museum in order to share this exhibition and important research,” said Niles Parker, Gosnell Executive Director of the NHA. “By applying a wider lens to our understanding of whaling, exploration, and artistic creativity, we can better understand the cultural exchange taking place which influenced disparate societies around the world.”

The Wider World & Scrimshaw emphasizes the work of Native communities, many of whom have beliefs, myths, and traditions related to whales, distinctive maritime traditions involving marine mammals, and vibrant carving styles.

Engaging in questions about identity, place, and material, it considers the impact of exploration and whaling on the production of material culture in the Pacific world between 1700 and today. The exhibit also explores how Native communities in the Pacific world were impacted by commercial whaling ventures in the 1800s and the external pressures of colonialism and Western empire-building.

Semper Fi, Michael

If you’re not smart, you need smart friends. Yes you do. And that has long been my motto, the key to whatever limited success that I’ve had over these many years. Thank you, smart friends. You know who you are, I’m sure!

One of my smart friends helped me out with a conundrum I had while in Florida this winter. I had devised a winch system to assist me in pulling my silly little plastic fishing boat out of the canal and onto my dock. The winch, mounted on a large piece of pressure-treated wood, worked well until two things changed. One was that the water level in the freshwater canal dropped by about seven inches. The other was that I had attached a small outboard engine onto my little boat. These changes caused my once-perfect winch system to pull out of the ground. Yikes!

Time to call a smart friend. I hit up my buddy Michael Stackpole. Mike has been building bridges all around the northeast for some forty years now. An hour or so later, Mike had sent me four pages of detailed plans for what I needed to do in order to get things back in order. Stress points, dead man posts, steel fasteners —yeah, this was a new world for me. I simply followed Mike’s directions to the letter and voila! A perfect new winch system now pops my little boat out of the canal without any sweat.

I thanked Michael profusely for his wisdom. He told me that it was all good, as I had helped him to get into surf fishing once again. Well, I guess that maybe, to some extent, I had been HIS smart friend. And I am very glad of that, because Michael Stackpole had become a wonderful addition to our cool little beach fishing community.

Mike has traveled an interesting path to get to where he is right now. He’s a local kid who graduated from Nantucket High School in May of 1981. He sensed that he needed a big change in his life before things spiraled out of control. So on July 15, young Michael and his Nantucket High classmate David Sylvia found themselves on Parris Island with their feet placed on the bright yellow painted footprints, the first step to the very different world of the United States Marine Corp.

Treasures

“Certain things you never forget. Sgt. Wong is one of those things. He was only five feet, four inches tall. And he was a tornado! Sylvia and I were wondering, oh wow, what did we get ourselves into?”

Michael spent the next three years traveling the world: Okinawa, Pusan (South Korea), 29 Palms, all through Europe, Diago Garcia and, …”some other interesting places I can’t get into.” When his three year hitch was up in 1984, Mike figured he was ready to return to the island.

In August of that year, as he was driving on Hummock Pond Road, Mike happened to see three lovely ladies hitchhiking. Being the chivalrous gentleman that he is, Michael picked them up. Two were local girls: Cynthia Bartlett and Linda Sauter (Humphries). The third was Jacquie Roche. Jacquie was working on the island for the summer at Foods for Here and There with Dorothy Marks (Hertz). Michael soon found himself spending a lot of time at the sandwich shop. “I was persistent. Jacquie didn’t seem to like me at first.” But Dorothy told Jacquie that Jacquie would marry Mike one day. She was right.

When September came, Jacquie went back to school at Northeastern University. And Michael was realizing once again that Nantucket was not good for him at that point. “Work, beach, and barstool—between the Muse, the Box and Christopher’s, things were going south for me. I didn’t know when to go home.” Later on, Michael would stop drinking and things started to come together for him.

Mike and Jacquie moved into a little apartment in Hyde Park. He got a job as a truck driver for a paving company. After a couple of his paychecks bounced, Michael moved on to the Kodiak Company, where he began to learn about bridge work. He was a quick study. After ten years there, Mike took a job with SPS New England. “I’ve been with SPS from ‘95 to present. I’m the general super of the bridge maintenance division. Had to leave the heavy construction part due to some health issues like back, eye, and neck surgery.”

Caterpillar Cacophony

It’s daffy season once again and Nantucketers and visitors alike celebrate this sure sign of spring. As the weather warms up, however, another sign of the season will emerge. Rather, they will hatch. I’m talking about one of my favorite native species, the Eastern Tent Caterpillar (ETC). I have written about the ETC before explaining the natural history and amazing ecology of the species. However, it’s worth mentioning again since this year will be a boom year.

Boom year? Yes, BOOM! Like an explosion. The 2026 Eastern Tent Caterpillar season will likely be a “boom” year as opposed to a “bust” year, when low numbers of caterpillars hatch and survive to the next year. The ETC go through a roughly 10-year boom-and-bust cycle, and 2026 is scheduled to be an explosion. And I’m not going just by the calendar. Around the trails at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF), or really anywhere where the Black Cherry trees are growing, there are hundreds of egg masses just waiting for some warm spring weather.

On a recent survey of Black Cherry trees at LLNF with students from the University of Massachusetts: Boston, we found an average of 10 egg masses per tree. Some individual trees had more than 20 egg masses. That may not seem like a lot, but each egg mass has an average of 150 to 200 eggs. That’s more than 4,000 caterpillars on some trees! The egg masses are shiny, black, and small, but they are tough and are usually found on the ends of branches, close to the newest growth. The small, white eggs are found under the black, which sloughs off with warmer weather. Keep an eye out now!

So what will a caterpillar boom look like to us? The last boom season (2015 and 2016) we saw massive tents on cherry trees – think about the trees that line Madaket Road and some of your favorite conservation areas. We also saw lots of caterpillars on the move as they tried to find more food after they defoliated some of their favorites. This is when most people will start to notice. It’ll all be hidden again by mid-June when the very-full caterpillars crawl into the leaf litter to make cocoons.

Michael inherited his Nantucket family home in 2019. He oversaw a considerable renovation project and now he and Jacquie have their dream house. “Construction was hampered by COVID and the related materials shortages. We completely remodeled the house. Now it’s our happy place! Jacquie retired April of 2022. She loves Nantucket, as do our kids (son Christopher and daughter Brooke). I’m doing a reverse commute for my job now!”

Once the renovation was done, Jacquie saw that her husband needed new marching orders. “She told me that I needed a hobby.” Michael reached out to me and soon after, he and I were out on a beach fishing charter, along with his Marine buddy Danny Cross (Cpl. Cross!). And an obsession soon took hold of my friend Michael Stackpole.

“Jacquie is right: I’ve got to stay busy. Next thing

MURRAY CAMP

Celebrating our 38th Anniversary!

Weekly enrollment is available: 8:30am-3pm, June 22 to August 28

MURRAY CAMP also provides summer and year-round child entertainment and care for weddings, conferences, beach parties, etc. Consult with camp administration for details.

you know, I ran into Stevie Tuna and poof, I’m at Nantucket Tackle spending $2,500!” Like a good Marine, Michael wanted to be ready for anything and everything.

Michael Stackpole is now an ingrained member of our Nantucket beach fishing community. His bright red Chevy pickup, sporting the distinctive “USMC” license plates, is consistently spotted in the fishy places. Jacquie is often with him. Michael had Jacquie take some fishing lessons with Tammy King. He also had a custom fishing rod built for her. Although nowhere as passionate about fishing as her goofy husband is, Jacquie loves their together time on the beach.

“Every day I hit the beach it’s a bonus day! I have the best of all worlds. I’m very fortunate! Things could have gone the other way. Jacquie got me out of Nantucket when I needed to go. Jacquie is the rock that kept everything together. I worked all the time. She raised our kids. She is amazing!”

The Nantucket fishing community is glad that Michael has joined us. I know that some of my fishing buddies were freaked out this winter when they saw that the storm surge had caused the outermost part of Great Point to be cut off from the island at the skinny portion known as the Galls. But I wasn’t worried at all. You see, I have a smart friend. He loves Great Point. And he knows how to build bridges. It will all work out just fine. Semper Fi, Michael Stackpole!

Golden Anniversary

the American Daffodil Society and held at the Boys & Girls Club. It featured 250 entries across nine bloom classifications, and the Nantucket Board of Selectmen officially declared the week of April 28 to May 4 as “Nantucket Daffodil Week.”

Jean MacAusland was just getting started. She continued to encourage widespread plantings, and in 1978, she spearheaded an ambitious project: to plant one million daffodil bulbs across our island. The effort began with 30,000. The following year, MacAusland personally purchased eight tons of daffodil bulbs, which were planted that September. Much of the planting was an island-wide effort done by community members and aided by other Nantucket organizations. MacAusland had small yellow flags made that volunteers used to mark where they stopped so the next participants knew where to continue planting.

Over the years, the Nantucket Garden Club has planted daffodils along the Polpis bike path, the Cisco bike path, and many other locations. When Sankaty Lighthouse was moved, the Sconset Trust did a major planting on the property. PASCON joined the effort in 2007, when board members working on their annual Dreamcatcher event decided daffodil planting would be a wonderful way to honor and recognize the invaluable efforts of the family caregivers and the PASCON patient care volunteers. PASCON has been responsible for planting tens of thousands of daffodil bulbs across the island.

Last year Mary Malavase, island resident, daffodil expert, and long-time member of the Nantucket Garden Club, organized a raffle to raise money to plant 50,000 more daffodil bulbs to commemorate the 50th anniversary. “I was a friend

of Jean’s and since I had helped her with previous island plantings, I wanted to not only mark this historic 50th Flower Show, but to remember how one woman’s vision to beautify the island should be remembered and continued. There is nothing happier after a long Grey Lady winter, to see daffodils blooming when we really need a colorful boost. The NGC is very thankful that Dave Champoux, who has done many island bulb projects over the past 45 plus years, continued to do the plantings with his wonderful crew. ”

Since the early 1980s, the Nantucket Garden Club has given daffodil bulbs to island schoolchildren to plant so they can enter their flowers in the next spring’s show. Malavase believes that education and our young people are key to continue the daffodil growing here, and she praises the participation of local schools. “The past 25 plus years have had the assistance of the Nantucket Public Schools Middle School and now the STEM Teacher Annie Webber at the Intermediate School. Each year, Annie prepares a class on classification using a daffodil. The students then package a bulb with it’s name and planting instructions and distribute them to the lower grades and to other island schools. The students are encouraged to bring their flower to school at show time, and a group of wonderful volunteers helps the students prepare their entries. When it’s a school vacation week, as this year, they work with the Boys and Girls Club and other island youth programs to facilitate entries, including flower arrangements. Last year there were over 1300 bulbs distributed.”

This year the Nantucket Daffodil Flower Show will be held in The Nantucket Inn at 1 Miller’s Way. Entries can be brought to the inn on Friday, April 24 from 12 to 6 pm, and on Saturday, April 25 from 7 to 9:30 am. Brent Heath, celebrated horticulturist and owner of Brent and Becky’s Bulbs, will be on hand April 24 from 1 to 5 pm to help participants identify their daffodil varieties and confidently enter them into the show. The show opens to the public Saturday from continued on page 16

2 to 5 pm and on Sunday,April 26 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free; donations benefit the Garden Club’s Island Daffodil Planting Fund.

In addition to her work with the Nantucket Garden Club, Malavase is an Accredited Daffodil Judge and has been a board member of the American Daffodil Society. Judging the Nantucket show can be different from judging elsewhere: “Judging other shows is always a wonderful experience,” Malavase commented, “You see, depending on the season, daffodils that might not be in bloom for our show. There are early , mid-, and late season daffodils. Flowers grown around the country may show different intensity of color depending on soil conditions... When you read the report from the very first [Nantucket] show, we see flower names that are very common garden varieties. Over time, exhibitors have purchased bulbs from many different hybridizers from around the world. Every year new cultivars are offered. Our local garden shops and the farms have always had bulbs for sale in the fall that are perfect to enter in the show. The American Daffodil society daffodilusa.org also lists bulb sources. When purchasing, remember that every daffodil has a name, which is helpful to know when entering the show.”

Mary also commented on how entering the show can at first be daunting and then develop into a deep passion: “When a first-time exhibitor or a youth exhibitor comes to the show with their first daffodil to enter, it can be overwhelming [seeing] hundreds of daffodils being staged for entry. The exhibitor may be ready to depart quickly: then a Garden Club member, or ADS Judge says... ‘can I help you.’ They show the exhibitor the simple way to enter. After judging, when the first-time entrant visits that show, they may have received a Second or Third Prize for their daffodil—the fear is gone and the individual becomes an annual exhibitor. That’s what a Community Show is all about...We currently have four individuals who have exhibited here for many years and are completing schooling this April to become judges.”

It was in 1978, that the celebration of daffodils on Nantucket began to grow beyond the flower show. Jean MacAusland joined forces with H. Flint & Corky Ranney and Melva Chesrown to organize an antique car parade. That first year, 19 cars participated in the “First Annual Nantucket Garden Club Vintage Motor Car Outing,” including a dashing 1920s Rolls Royce Silver Ghost and Jean

MacAusland’s classic Rolls Royce. Jean’s culinary background (she and her husband Earle founded Gourmet magazine) inspired her to plan a tailgate picnic to be held after the parade.

The parade’s popularity grew quickly. By 1983, 80 antique cars had registered and 40 more crashed the parade, making the procession so long that the first car looped back around right behind the last. The following year, the Nantucket Island Chamber of Commerce, now in charge of Daffodil Festival activities (except for the Nantucket Garden Club’s Daffodil Show), had to cap the number of antique cars in the parade.

For 2026, dozens of decorated vintage vehicles will line up on Main Street at 9:30 am for festival goers to view up-close. “People's Choice” ballots will be available to all outside the Chamber office at Zero Main Street. At noon the parade begins: drivers in creative garb that compliments the adornments on their cars, wind through town before heading out Milestone Road to Siasconset for the tailgate picnic.

While the Daffodil Flower Show and the Antique Car Parade are the centerpieces of Daffodil Festival weekend, there are activities for all ages. Free events through the day on Saturday, April 25 at Children’s Beach include a photogenic Daffy Hat Pageant open to men, women, and children, a Children’s Bike Parade featuring bicycles, wagons, skateboards, and baby carriages adorned with daffodils, and NiSHA’s (Nantucket Safe Harbor for Animals) Daffy Dog Parade with awards for the most dapper canine. In between these events at Children’s Beach, the Nantucket Chamber of Commerce has arranged for a NanPuppets show and a Daffodil Magic Show. The Pine Woods Morris Men usually add music and dance to the fun at Children’s Beach and will perform at other locations around the island on Saturday.

After fifty years, the Nantucket Daffodil Festival is proof that the best traditions are the ones that blend love of community with a cheerful willingness to be lighthearted and a little silly. There are few places in the world where you can watch a 1920s Roadster decorated in daffodils roll past a crowd of people in flower hats and finery, cheered on by ribbon-wearing dogs, on an island carpeted in millions of blooms. Nantucket is one of them.

Mary Malavase expressed it perfectly: “When you plant bulbs in the fall, sometimes you tend to forget them, and, magically, when you are emerging from a very cold and stormy winter, the daffodils surprise us and appear just when we need to know winter is finally past.”

Caterpillar Cacophony

from page 7

I don’t mean to be alarmist. This big year for ETC is a natural part of their decadal cycle. Sure, not all caterpillars will survive the boom—there might not be enough food for all. And that is what keeps their population in check. They will eat to capacity, and some will die off. ETC are host-specific, which means that they are only able to consume a select few plant species. On Nantucket, that is primarily our native Black Cherries and closely related Beach Plums and Crab Apples. The timing of the caterpillar hatch and early spring leaf-out has evolved together over time so that the timing of each is synchronized. The caterpillar eats the fresh young leaves, and the cherry tree still has time to put out an additional flush of leaves in the summer season.

We often get asked about how the cherry trees fare – do the caterpillars kill the tree? I am happy to say that, for the most part, the spring leaf chomping doesn’t harm the tree. A healthy cherry tree can handle a spring pruning. Sure, it takes energy to make more leaves. But a long-lived woody plant can withstand some leaf damage. The damage sustained only “hurts” a tree that is already vulnerable like a young sprout or one weakened by some other stressor. If there were multiple caterpillar boom years in a row, the cherry might be weakened over time. This is where the boom-bust cycle works for the host trees as well. They can replenish their energy reserves in the bust years.

So instead of denigrating these wonderful native caterpillars, let’s admire them during their boom cycle.

In the 1963 Disney movie Summer Magic, Burl Ives sings a song called “The Ugly Bug Ball.” I have that song stuck in my head when I see the plethora of Eastern Tent Caterpillar egg masses this year. It will be an Ugly Bug Ball for sure. And that is really how we should look at this year’s hatch: as a celebration, a caterpillar party!

Here’s what to expect for the rest of Caterpillar Celebration 2026!

Egg Hatch – Anytime from Daffy Weekend to early May the egg masses will begin to hatch. The hatch date is driven by air temperatures, so a good stretch of warm, sunny days could do it.

Tent Construction – The newly hatched caterpillars will start making a tent

almost right away. This tent helps them thermoregulate and stay warm during our Nantucket cool springs.

Feasting – Eastern Tent Caterpillars have from hatch day to early June to really beef up and get ready for metamorphosis. This is the time to eat as much as possible. It’s also when the Black Cherry trees are putting out the fresh, young leaves – the most palatable for the caterpillars.

Cocoons at last – By mid to late June, the ETC had gone the way of the Very Hungry Caterpillar and built a cocoon. ETCs usually head to the leaf litter or wood piles hiding their cocoons from interested predators.

Metamorphosis – After being in the cocoon for three weeks, the ETCs emerge as reddish/brown moths. The moth phase lasts only 5 days. In this short time, the females release pheromones, attract a mate, find a host, and lay eggs. No time, or ability, to eat! All eggs are oviposited and then…death.

Eggs!!!! Yes, next year’s eggs, which will hatch in spring of 2027, will already be found on our Black Cherries. And so the cycle begins…

Even though I hope we can all learn to appreciate the Eastern Tent Caterpillars, what do you do if you still want to get rid of them in your yard? First of all, you could prevent them hatching by removing the egg masses before hatching. That would involve scraping them off. If you identify where the eggs are, you could remove just the end of those branches. Alternatively, you could put sticky tape on the branch to stick the hatchlings so they can’t eat or travel the tree. Whatever you decide to do, please do not spray insecticide. There are no insecticides that are specific to ETC. So, if you spray for ETC, you will likely kill any bees, butterflies, or other pollinators in your yard. This will also limit birds to your property and cause a trickle down of harm and biodiversity loss.

Happy Eastern Tent Caterpillar Celebration! That does have a nice ring to it.

I’d love to see your caterpillar and tent photos. Share them to stbois@llnf.org or tag us on social media (@loringnatureack and on @nantucket_insider).

NHA’s The Wider World

from page 4

“The NHA’s Whaling Museum interprets the history of 19th century American whaling, where whale-hunting voyages from New England headed to all corners of the Pacific world. The Wider World & Scrimshaw exhibition will bring non-New England perspectives into our museum and help our visitors understand the cultural interactions that resulted from this commercial activity,” said Michael Harrison, NHA Chief Curator and Obed Macy Research Chair. “The NHA is excited to share this significant exhibition with our visitors and to open up our interpretation of whaler’s scrimshaw to new and broader perspectives.”

An interdisciplinary, community-driven, and collections-focused exhibition, The Wider World & Scrimshaw connects the historical and contemporary through cultural products ranging from Oceanic material culture and Arctic carvings to engraved sperm whale teeth. Several short documentaries and animated films as well as tactile displays of carving techniques and natural materials provide additional opportunities to engage with exhibition themes that include: paddles, dance wands & clubs, busks, fids, needle cases, totem poles, and trade goods.

Summer season programming for The Wider World & Scrimshaw will begin with a member reception and opening celebration in May, followed by an exciting slate of gallery activities and public programs, special events, and workshops inspired by themes found in the exhibition. A free lecture series at the Whaling Museum will feature talks by scholars and artists, while family-friendly crafts— inspired by whale ecology and scrimshaw—will be offered in the children’s Discovery Center. A new family tour will be offered each week, guiding guests through the featured exhibition and other areas of the museum before concluding with a craft in the Discovery Center.

Community programs, classes, and events will include scrimshaw-focused Mindful Memories and NHA on the Road programs, as well as maritime craft and carving-focused Decorative Arts workshops at the 1800 House. Other events include The Wider World & Scrimshaw Community Day in August, with hands-on activities and engaging opportunities for families to learn more about exhibition content; while in October, the Whaling Museum will host a final celebration of the exhibition, with gallery tours and interactive experiences across the Museum.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
