by Suzanne Daub The Artists Association of Nantucket (AAN) continues its Spotlight Series at the Champion Gallery in the Visual Arts Center (VAC), 24 Amelia Drive, with an exhibition featuring island artist G.S. Hill alongside Rose Gonnella, and Jennifer Rosenthal. Hill’s portion of the show offers a look at an artist whose career on Nantucket spans more than four decades and four distinct mediums. For his Spotlight Series exhibition, Hill made a deliberate choice: rather than presenting a single body of work, he wanted visitors to see the full breadth of photo by Suzanne Daub his art. “I wanted to show the four mediums I work in: oils, watercolors, pencil drawings, and a hand-pulled etching,” he explained. The result is a show that traces the arc of his artistic development while showcasing his range of talent in one curated space. The oils and watercolors on view are contemporary pieces, drawn from his current body of work. For this exhibit, he selected different Nantucket scenes from his oeuvre, giving visitors a sense of how the island has shaped his eye over the years. His oils are serene and rich in color, while his watercolors lean classic and bright. Hill once worked in watercolor more frequently and, after some time away from it, is now returning to this medium. The pencil drawings carry particular historical weight. Created in the 1980s, they belong to the same series as pieces the Nantucket Historical Association continued on page 18

A Decade of Distinction by Suzanne Daub
For the tenth year running, Cape Cod Life has named Susan Lister Locke the Best Jeweler on Nantucket, a milestone that, even after a decade, still catches her by surprise. “I was astounded,” she says of the moment she learned the news. “I kept thinking it cannot happen again, and then it did... I am astounded, delighted, and humbled. It’s a real honor considering all the other skilled jewelers on the island.” Susan Lister Locke’s path to jewelry design was anything but conventional. Born in Boston and raised along the Rhode Island coast, she spent 25 years running high-end retail, styling A-list clients and indulging a lifelong love of fashion, before jewelry became her second career. She didn’t begin creating jewelry until age 50 and didn’t touch gemstones until 55. She opened her own gallery on Nantucket’s Easy Street at age 68. Rather than a disadvantage, she believes the late start was a gift. “There was no pressure on me when I started because I did not know it was going to be a career,” she explains. “So I could do it with joy—not for making a living.” Without formal training, she says, she was free to “color outside of the lines.” She’s drawn more to the ebullience of Italian design than the precision of the German school: “I like whimsy in my world.” continued on page 20

Summer Bounty from Bartlett’s
For many on Nantucket, there is one ritual that marks the true start of the summer: the first bite of Bartlett’s Farm sweet corn. Grown nearby our island’s south shore beaches, this corn and the farm that grows it have become something of an island institution. Bartlett’s Farm is Nantucket’s oldest and largest family-owned farm, tracing its roots back to William Bartlett, who began farming the land in the early 1800s. More than 180 years later, the farm is still run by the Bartlett family, now in its seventh generation, across acres of fields, greenhouses, and garden center land. What sets Bartlett’s Farm apart from many commercial growers isn’t just the taste of its corn—it’s how that corn gets grown. In 2009, the farm began a gradual, years-long transition toward organic methods across its operation, a process that has required rethinking nearly everything about how crops are managed. After a small 1 acre test plot in 2022, Farmer Dave Bartlett decided it was time to make the jump and do 30 acres of organically grown sweet corn. Bartlett’s sweet corn is now grown using organic inputs and standards. Every day hundreds of freshly picked ears of locally grown corn are offered for sale at Bartlett’s Farm from 8 am to 7 pm. And from 9 am to 1 pm Bartlett’s farm trucks sell their corn, tomatoes, and other farm fresh treats downtown on Main Street Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and in Sconset on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. When it’s this fresh, Bartlett’s Farm corn is delicious simply steamed or even eaten raw, but here we are sharing some of our staff’s favorite recipes for this bounty of summer.
CORN CHOWDER
from Bartlett’s Ocean View Farm Cookbook 8 ears fresh sweet corn, shucked and kernels cut from cob 4 slices of bacon, diced 1 medium onion, diced 2 cups of potatoes, diced 3 cups of corn kernels, cooked or raw
AUNT LEAH’S FUDGE “The Best Fudge in The World”
3 cups of milk 1 cup half-and-half or light cream salt & pepper to taste chopped parsley and paprika for garnish Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add onion and bacon and cook, stirring frequently, until onion has softened and started to brown lightly. Add in the flour and garlic and cook 1-1/2 minutes. While whisking, gradually pour in 5 cups of water or vegetable stock. Stir in corn kernels, potatoes, thyme, and bay leaf. Bring to a light boil, then reduce heat to medium-low and allow to simmer, stirring occasionally, until potatoes are tender, about 20 minutes. Remove bay leaf then transfer 2-1/2 cups of the chowder to a blender and blend until smooth. Stir the mixture back into the pot and stir in half and half. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle each serving with chives, serve hot. TIP: sear some bay scallops and “float” them in the center of the soup as an extra special Nantucket garnish!

From Grand Ole Opry to Nantucket Blues by Steve “Tuna” Tornovish
The circle in the middle of the stage of the Grand Ole Opry is considered sacred ground in the country music world. The greatest players of that genre have stood in the six-foot circle and performed for millions of adoring fans. The circle was cut from the stage of the hallowed Ryman Auditorium in 1974 and placed in the newly constructed Grand Ole Opry stage, located a few miles outside of downtown Nashville. The Ryman, the original home of the Opry, had fallen on hard times. It needed significant repairs. And the show needed to go on. The circle represents the roots of country music. When a performer stands in it, they carry an awesome responsibility. Brad Paisley is quoted on the Opry.com website as saying, “I think keeping, physically and metaphorically, this bond with the past separates the Opry from almost all other musical institutions. I’ve always said that the circle still contains the dust from Hank William’s cowboy boots. Now it contains that dust but also the heart and soul of this town and all the people who have worked to rise above.” I recently had an opportunity to fish with two amazing young musicians who stood in that very circle at the Grand Ole Opry and played for a packed house. And I wanted to know all about it! Gabe Zinzer is a local kid. He’s quiet, smart and intense. Always has been. I first met Gabe when I was running the musical show “Island Tunes” at the old Faregrounds restaurant. Gabe’s dad Jason had reached out to me to say that his son, a seventh grader at the time, played the mandolin and would love to play the show. Gabe showed up with Chris Westerlund, his instructor at the time. They played some bluegrass tunes. It was clear to see that Gabe was onto something. Gabe also fell in with a bunch of local kids who loved music. They formed the band Local Notes, a group that is still playing all over the island during the the summer. I loved watching the young members of their group grow and reach their potential. When it came time for college, Gabe wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. He had been accepted at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, but the fit didn’t feel right to Gabe. I suggested that he look at Belmont University. Through a series of misadventures, Gabe ended up joining my wife, sisters, and me on a previously scheduled trip to Nashville. This allowed Gabe to play his mandatory audition. Belmont’s music department was impressed. The young mandolin player from the little island of Nantucket was in! Gabe also picked up a gig on his first day in Nashville, of course. He and I had gone out early for breakfast and ended up at the Willie Nelson museum. Gabe saw a guitar hanging on the wall and picked it up (note to kids: not advisable to do this). He quickly tuned it and started to play The Entertainer by Scott Joplin. A very stern looking lady emerged from an office and stood in front of the unphased Gabe as he picked the song. She said, “Young man, I’ve been teaching guitar for four decades. That’s amazing! Who are you?” Gabe, without missing a note, introduced himself and said that he was actually a mandolin player. The woman replied that she, her husband, and two other continued on page 12

Director of Research & Conservation at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation The Nantucket Invasive Plant Species Committee (IPSC) was created as a subcommittee of the Nantucket Biodiversity Initiative around 2004. The IPSC has a goal to identify, track, manage and educate the public about the island’s non-native invasive plants. IPSC organizes group pulling events for some problematic species and works to educate the public about identification and management. When IPSC was first created, there was a list of concerning species that we wanted to monitor on island. We called them the “invaders” and worked to bring awareness so people could report them. This list came primarily from the mainland and other parts of southern New England where problems were first noticed and studied. We wanted to learn from our nearest neighbors as a way to prevent what we saw from happening in other places. After more than 20 years, it’s interesting to note which plants have actually become the problems we expected, and which ones have been more manageable in the long run. One plant that isn’t as bad as it used to be is purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria). A lot of mapping and research went into purple loosestrife in the early 2000s. Ernie Steinauer from Mass Audubon did an extensive study on the spread of the plant at Sesachacha Pond. Since then, loosestrife beetles, a biocontrol released throughout New England, has helped to curb the plant’s spread. The beetles feed exclusively on the leaves and stems of the loosestrife plant, significantly stunting its growth and reducing seed production without harming most native flora. It’s still present onisland in wet pond margins like Miacomet Pond, but it is no longer the threat to native biodiversity we once feared. Another in that category is Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii). We had this on our early list for its problematic nature throughout the woods of southern New England especially western Massachusetts and Connecticut where it invades the understory forests. It has never truly gotten a foothold on Nantucket like we expected. continued on page 22

musicians had a bluegrass quartet. She played guitar. They had a bass player, a fiddle player, and a banjo player. But no mandolin player. She invited Gabe to join them at a large local restaurant to play a few songs that evening. Gabe did, and he ended up playing with them for the entirety of their set! So, to summarize, Gabe had been in Nashville for about fifteen minutes and already had a gig. This is how it goes for Gabe Zinzer. Gabe found his people at Belmont University. He joined Belmont Bluegrass. The group was featured on the Opry’s April 23, 2026 show. Belmont Bluegrass shared the stage with country and bluegrass music greats like Rhonda Vincent and The Gatlin Brothers. And, more importantly, Gabe played next to a beautiful young lady named Emma Buckner who simply burnt the stage down with her fiddle. I asked Emma about that moment. She smiled as she recalled the night: “To step on the stage and have the announcer drowned out by the cheering – and then to receive a standing ovation when we finished... it was a dream come true for me! That kind of support fuels you, keeps you pushing towards the next big stage while also allowing you to celebrate all the work it took to get you to that point.” Emma enrolled at Belmont University one year ahead of Gabe. She’s from Shelby, NC. She said that her musical talents run in this order: fiddle, then singing, mandolin, and, finally, guitar. I asked Emma how she met her version of the man from Nantucket. “We shared a performance class. He’s a year behind me. We really didn’t know each other until we joined the Foxhounds.” The Foxhounds includes two other Belmont friends. The four musicians have been on whirlwind tours for the past two summers. This year’s tour took them all over: North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky! It was a lot but, as Emma told me, “The grind is the best part. It wouldn’t be worth it if it was easy.”

Gabe decided that Emma needed to come to Nantucket to see what it was all about. That included a beach ride to Great Point with Uncle Stevie to see how Emma would fare when doing battle with a bluefish. We soon found out. I hooked a medium sized fish, and Emma hauled it to the beach. She faced down a fear and touched the beautiful blue. Yes, this young lady fits right in with the island life. Emma Buckner is a photo by Steve Tornovish keeper! So what does the future hold for these two young musicians? It’s hard to say, aside from them working on their craft daily. Emma will resume touring with The Dolly Show, a tribute act to the great Dolly Parton in which Emma plays guitar and sings background vocals. “I get to wear a bedazzled black outfit!” She also will be playing fiddle while touring with a young Americana artist named Hunter Flynn. “Hunter is so great! His album is coming out soon. I’m excited!” Gabe is intent on finishing up his senior year at Belmont. He was working on charts for a gig he had coming up shortly with a band that would be playing in the Broadway area, the main drag in Nashville. Gabe is in constant demand at Belmont, helping his friends with their musical projects. The sky is the limit for Gabe Zinzer and Emma Buckner. I sure wouldn’t bet against them to be standing in that hallowed Opry circle again real soon. (NHA) acquired for its permanent collection — a distinction that makes Hill the only living artist represented in the NHA’s permanent collection. “The two in the VAC show are the last of that series,” he noted. Rounding out the exhibition is a hand-pulled etching from 1983: the artist’s proof of Brant Point. It holds special significance as Hill’s final etching of the subject, and one of the last he ever created. He no longer works in that medium. G. S. Hill’s connection to the Artists Association of Nantucket goes back to the very beginning of his time on-island. “The first thing we did in 1979 when we moved to Nantucket was to join the Artists Association,” he said. “It’s part of the community.” That relationship has shaped his view of the organization’s value to artists. “Having the Artists Association of Nantucket is 100% helpful to us artists: a lot of well-known island artists got their start taking classes at AAN,” Hill commented. He also spoke highly of the Visual Arts Center as a venue for this particular show, saying “I think the VAC’s Champion Gallery is a great place to show! It is a totally different venue [from their gallery on Federal Street]. AAN has so much to offer there: classes, workshops, talks...” “Supporting local artists is important,” added AAN Board President Laurie Champion, “they are the fabric that enriches a community... It doesn’t matter if you work here or are a visitor, art talks to you. It brings people together as a community and makes people feel connected.” Laurie and her husband, Bob, are avid art collectors and have long supported Nantucket’s culture life with philanthropy, inspiration, and dedicated leadership. She founded AAN’s Wet Paint Dinner and has chaired the AAN Gala several times. “The first thing I ever bought [on Nantucket] was a set of prints by Donn Russell—I still have them,” Champion reminisced. “Every year I acquire something that will stay a part of my family. The AAN members are phenomenal...This is our first summer of Spotlight shows, and coming up is Greg Hill: he’s a legacy artist with a Lifetime Achievement Award, one of just two given that great honor and continued on page 19

well-deserved. “Last year we (AAN) sold the one gallery and moved into the Federal Street Gallery: it has been a tremendous success...Many artists suggested that they’d like to have more than one image in a show, and it was decided that a Spotlight Show would be a good way to do that,” Champion explained. The Spotlight Series gives AAN member artists an additional opportunity to exhibit a curated collection of their work, offering visitors a broader representation of an artist’s vision than any single piece could provide. The concept grew out of discussions within AAN’s Exhibitions and Gallery Committee, with a clear goal: to enhance the visibility of AAN’s artists. The opportunity to be featured was opened to all current AAN members, who responded to a questionnaire indicating their interest and availability. From those responses, AAN organized six two-week Spotlight show slots for the year. The format allows artists to present work that might not typically appear in a standard gallery exhibition: pieces reflecting personal experiences, travels, and inspirations that extend beyond Nantucket. Each participating artist is also given the chance to share biographical information and other materials, giving visitors deeper insight into their background, process, and artistic vision. Because the Visual Arts Center also houses AAN’s Education Department and welcomes youth and adult students throughout the week, the venue extends participating artists’ reach well beyond a traditional gallery audience, creating new opportunities for a wider community to experience and engage with their work. The Spotlight Series supports several goals: helping artist members gain visibility, showcasing the depth and diversity of their work, and strengthening the bond between artists and the community. By encouraging artists to share their personal stories and creative processes alongside their work, the Spotlight Series helps the public develop a deeper appreciation for the people behind the art. Given the strong response to the 2026 series, AAN plans to continue hosting Spotlight Series shows in the Champion Gallery. The show featuring G.S. Hill, Rose Gonnella, and Jennifer Rosenthal continues to August 17. The Spotlight Series show following opens August 18 and will feature Cathy Aguiar, Kelly Broderick, and Rika Petrova-Powers. Now, ten years and ten awards later, she reflects on how her sense of the honor has evolved. “I’m an older woman who is trying to stay current without getting trendy,” she says. “To find out that people still feel this way about me and my designs is mindblowing.” She keeps an eye on current styles— layering and charms— but designs for permanence over trendiness. “I don’t want [my jewelry] to be outdated five years from now. I want my designs to be exciting and last a good long time...to be timeless.” Locke’s design philosophy centers on one unshakable belief: jewelry should be lived in. “I want it to be pretty. And I want it to be worn, not sitting in a box,” she says. It’s a conviction she repeats often and one that shapes how she works with clients, sometimes reworking pieces that have sat unworn to
give them new life. “I do that a lot,” she notes. She primarily works in 18-karat yellow gold with an exclusive alloy that gives the metal an especially rich tone. “I like it best, and also it’s been used since ancient times...[it’s] elemental,” she says. “And it sets off the color of many gemstones really well.” She’ll turn to white gold or platinum, sometimes combining metals, when the design or a client’s preference calls for that. Susan’s gemstone choices reflect the same instinct for the unexpected paired with the classic. She recently worked with Sphene for the first time, setting it into a pendant alongside Aquamarine and a handcarved Labradorite—a stunning combination. (Sphene is a rare gemstone celebrated for an intense rainbow fire and dispersion that actually exceeds that of a diamond.) She’s also drawn to Morganite (pink Beryl), Kunzite’s pinky-lavender hues, and the glow of Paraiba tourmaline, which she has described as looking like phosphorescence in the ocean, as if lit from within. Aquamarines, Sapphires, Mint Tourmaline, and South Sea and Tahitian pearls round out her signature palette. Design decisions, she says, are deeply personal: after meeting with a client, she tailors her decisions on a custom piece to a client’s skin tone, hair color, and eye color, along with a touch of je ne sais quoi. “I know about color. I don’t force anything on anyone: they won’t wear it,” she says. But she also likes to nudge clients out of their comfort zones: “I want them to try new things, but they have to be comfort-

Ask Locke where her ideas come from, and the answer is always the island itself. “My inspiration is the ocean and the sky and the gems,” she explained. After more than five decades on Nantucket, that well hasn’t run dry. “I think I get it by osmosis... it’s part of me,” she says. “I look out over the Easy Street basin, seeing the water, the boats, and the sky every day, and every day the scene is different — fierce or mellow, everchanging... And from my home, surrounded by conservation land... it all speaks to my soul. Like stones are magical, the sky is magical, the stars are magical,” she says. “I wish I could capture the clouds... they fascinate me.” Nature’s textures and patterns show up throughout her work — in organic shapes, in gold and silver finishes that echo the shoreline, and in collections like her ocean-inspired Seaquin line, and the Nantucket Sign Collection, which renders beloved island landmarks as wearable charms. Susan Lister Locke’s Gallery along the waterfront functions as both studio and a showroom, filled with fine, delicate pieces alongside bold, organic designs, all her designs. But the gallery is more than a retail space: it’s a gathering place. “My studio is sometimes like a clubhouse,” she described. “Clients become friends and stop by to say hello. They are comfortable here.” She describes one visit when two of her clients who had never before met both stopped by to see her when she was out of her gallery, and they ended up talking in Susan’s back garden patio for an hour. The gallery also hosts Wonderful Women on Wednesdays, a recurring event that will continue through August— and, she’s quick to add with a smile, men are welcome too. Locke has also opened her gallery to fellow artists, partnering with locals such as preservationist Cindy Pease Roe and photo-realist painter Anne Marie Bratton, both of whom share her devotion to the sea. Susan’s designs reach well beyond the shores of Nantucket Island. Her work is shown in Palm Beach, Florida, and other venues around the country, and has been worn by celebrities, island residents, and public figures worldwide. She remains humbled by that reach: “I’m so blessed... some of my clients could buy Cartier—not a Cartier, the whole thing. It’s very flattering.” Even after decades of designing, Locke has no shortage of ideas. Her imagination runs ahead of her hands—there’s always another piece taking shape before the last one is finished. She has pieces already laid out at home, and is mulling over the best design for a gorgeous 35-carat Paraiba Tourmaline, along with a collection of turquoise and pink opals that have yet to find their form. She’s also quick to credit the community that has sustained her for so long. “I’m very grateful that I have been supported all these years by my clients, and so many have become my friends,” she says—a sentiment that, after ten straight years being named as Nantucket’s Best Jeweler, seems to run in both directions.

Barberry, like other species on this list, was added early on to the Massachusetts Prohibited Plant List and so can no longer be planted. This reduction of availability and lack of further spread has limited its impact on island. Autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellate) was also once predicted to cover Nantucket. As a nitrogen-fixer, it can invade almost any habitat including our nutrient-poor, sandy soils. It is definitely still found here in places like Gardner Farm and other disturbed areas on edges such as those found at Mill Hill Park. But autumn olive isn’t invading with the tenacity we once expected. Autumn olive is still widely classified as an invasive species in our region disrupting native ecosystems, but some professional perspectives view it as less catastrophically harmful than once feared because it acts as a temporary pioneer species. Still keep an eye out for the bird-dispersed seedlings, but it no longer makes the top 10 list of problematic species on Nantucket. Other plants on the early IPSC list have proven themselves to be just as problematic as we expected. From habitat degradation to infrastructure impacts, nothing is more invasive than Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica). Early IPSC management projects with knotweed worked to remove the plant without chemicals. Managing infested areas by hand proved costly and time consuming with limited long-term effects. In the end, the recommendation is 1) remove as soon as possible and 2) clip and drip. Herbicides are the best tool in the toolbox for this aggressive species. But you can read more about management options here: ipm.cahnr.uconn.edu/invasive_plants_japanese_knotweed. Shrubby invaders like our honeysuckles and privet species (Lonicera ssp. and Ligustrum ssp.) have also continued to be a problem escaping into conservation and open space lands. These species are easily spread by birds who eat the fruit and poop them out elsewhere on island. When the seeds germinate, often in the “middle of nowhere,” they can take off, creating isolated patches than can grow undetected for years. Eradication of the species is now likely impossible, and management is more about triage and protecting specific resources. Spotted knapweed (Centaurea Stoebe) and garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) are both herbaceous plants that the IPSC continues to manage throughout the island. Their small, sometimes inconspicuous nature makes them seem like less of a concern. But both species have been on our list for more than 20 years. These are the two species where we are making headway in managing by hand-pulling. Both are winddispersed and seeds can persist in the soil for decades. We’ve managed to suppress multiple populations along Madaket Road bike paths, Eel Point Road, and pathways along the south shore by Cisco. But the efforts are far from over. Persistence pays off, but complete eradication seems unlikely at this point. Once again, it becomes more about triaging the management and looking to the areas we want to protect, like our sandplain grasslands and other priority habits. Today, we have some newer plants to the island that we never could have expected way back in 2004. Some of the plants on the list are accidentally novel washashores. Black swallowwort (Cynanchum louiseae), for example, is an herbaceous vine now spreading throughout the island with footholds along Madaket Road and in Sconset. It was likely a weedy hitchhiker on another plant decades ago. The wind dispersal and tenacious growth mean it’s hard to control. We’re still actively tracking and removing the plant, but it remains to be seen how successful these efforts will be. The real “winners” of late in being the newest and toughest invaders are the suite of ornamental grasses. Many of these species like Chinese silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis) and weeping love grass (Eragrostis curvula) have been popular in the landscape trade lining driveways and road edges. These grasses may look beautiful, but they are invading into our sandplain grasslands and coastal heathlands—priority habitats on the island and also in the state. For these species, in addition to eradication, which involves digging up clumps by hand, the IPSC has worked to change state policy as well. Both species have been added to the MA Prohibited Plant List, which means they can no longer be sold in the state of Massachusetts. We may still have to manage plants on our island, but we are working to stop the continued introduction of the species. That’s the best part about science: we have questions, we investigate, research, and learn more. Then we use that new knowledge to make management and research actions. The IPSC, the various conservation organizations, and local scientists continue to document and study the issue of non-native, invasive species. Who knows what the next 20 years will bring?

8 tortillas cilantro, chopped 8 ounces feta, crumbled SAUCE: 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup sour cream zest of 1 lime 1 Tbsp lime juice 1/2 tsp chili powder 1/2 tsp ground cumin 1/4 tsp garlic powder salt and pepper, to taste Boil the corn for 4-6 minutes or until cooked through, drain, cut kernels from the cob. While corn is cooking, in a mixing bowl, whisk together all sauce ingredents. set in refrigerator. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 1 Tbsp butter. Add red bell pepper and onion. Saute until softened. Add mushrooms, garlic, salt, pepper, chili powder, and cumin. Add corn kernels. Cook until mushrooms are softened. Grease a separate skillet with cooking spray and set over medium heat. To assemble the quesadillas, add one tortilla to the skillet. Sprinkle the bottom evenly with cheddar cheese. Add about 1/2 cup of the corn mixture. Sprinkle with more cheese. Top with a second tortilla. Cook for 2-4 minutes until the bottom stats to brown and cheese melts. then flip. Cook another 2-3 minutes. Repeat with the ramaining tortillas. Cut the quesadillas into triangles. Top with dipping sauce, cilantro, and feta
GRILLED CORN SALAD/SALSA 4 ears of corn, shucked 1 pint grape or cherry tomatoes, halved one 15oz can of black beans, rinsed and drained 2 avocados, diced 1 red onion, finely diced 1 orange bell pepper, diced small 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped 2 TBSP olive oil 1 lemon or 2 limes, juiced 1 -2 tsp. cumin 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 1/2 tsp ground black pepper Brush ears of corn with olive oil, then roast them on the grill, turning often until desired doneness. Cool the corn and cut the kernels from cob. Prep rest of the veggies as corn is cooling and then mix them with roast corn kernels in a large serving bowl. Toss well to combine. In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together olive oil, lemon or lime juice, cumin, salt and pepper. Pour dressing over the veggies, toss gently to coat evenly and let rest about 10 minutes before serving.
PARMESAN ZUCCHINI AND CORN 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 zucchinis, diced 1 cup corn kernels, roasted 1/2 teaspoon fresh basil chopped 1/2 teaspoon fresh oregano chopped 1/4 teaspoon fresh thyme chopped juice of 1 lime 2 Tbsp grated Parmesan, or more, to taste Salt and pepper, to taste Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add garlic to the skillet, and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add zucchini, corn, basil, oregano, and thyme. Cook, stirring occasionally, until zucchini is tender and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes; season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir in lime juice Serve immediately, sprinkled with Parmesan.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd. off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk. Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach. Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally. Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship. Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer. SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES
Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong. Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities. Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally. Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities. Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities. Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.
WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES
Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.
EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES
Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.
BAY & POND BEACHES
Miacomet Pond: Fresh water pond, nantucket-ma.gov/hab for algae updates. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the
Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities. Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong. Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

September 12 is the deadline to enter our 2026 Nantucket Photo Contest. For more than a quarter century, this popular contest has been a fun way for residents and visitor to share their images of Nantucket Island. Any season, any view, any time period (we love the old photos), serious or silly are accepted, as long as the photo was taken on Nantucket. You might even win one of the cash prizes. Winning photos and many deserving honorable mention will be shared with our readers in our Autumn Edition of Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket, which hits the stands on September 24, 2026. They will also be posted on Nantucket.net and on YesterdaysIsland.com after the print edition is published.
