Atheneum Shares a World of Ideas with 2026 Geschke Series

Since 2005, the Geschke Series has brought some of the most distinguished voices in journalism, science, literature, education, and culture to the Nantucket Atheneum, continuing its legacy of thoughtful dialogue dating back to 1834.

More than just a series of talks, the Geschke Series is a carefully curated intellectual experience. Each season, Atheneum staff invites speakers whose work shapes how we think about the world we live in now: its ideas, its challenges, and its possibilities. These evenings offer conversations that challenge assumptions, spark insight, and illuminate new perspectives.

Over nearly two decades, the series has opened the door to discussions on climate, culture, democracy, health, technology, and global affairs, all in the intimate setting of Nantucket. Every lecture is chosen for its depth and resonance, the kind of talk that gives shape to a summer evening and stays with you long after the lights dim.

Featured speakers for the 2026 Geschke Series are Danielle Allen, an American political theorist and James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University; Dr. Randall Davis, a Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at MIT and a Research Director at the Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory; Dr. Jeremy Nobel, a primary care physician, public health practitioner, and award-winning poet on the faculty of Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T.H. Sing It with Me

Sing it with me, my fellow fishing types: “It’s the most miserable time of the year…” We Nantucket fishers have been watching for weeks as the striped bass migration moves slowly north from the Chesapeake Bay. Then into the Connecticut River. Throughout the Rhode Island costal zones of Narragansett Bay. Then into Buzzard’s Bay. We constantly scanned the Larry’s Tackle website on Martha’s Vineyard, waiting for someone on that other island to catch their first sea-run striper of 2026. And we waited. And waited. And, well, you get it—we’re still waiting. But it’s getting closer!

It is getting closer, isn’t it? Larry’s Tackle reported that their first beach fishing striped bass was landed on April 20. That’s almost three weeks ago from the time of this writing. C’mon, fish, let’s get a move on!

Perhaps we fishing folk should put it in gear as well. Taking my own advice, I hit the south shore a couple of days ago. The water looked great. I was tossing a homemade bucktail jig with a red fish strip attached, a lure that’s put a lot of fish on the beach for me in the past. Nothing. Not a bite. No baitfish were seen in the waves. No birds were diving offshore. The only good news was that the day was somewhat foggy so those godawful windmills were hidden from view.

Desperate times called for desperate measures. It was time to get very scientific in my quest to catch a 2026 striped bass from the Nantucket beaches. Thus, I put on a white lab coat and consulted two authoritative resources to help me know when to head back to the beaches and start casting.

The first resource was AI. I asked the great computer oracle the following question: “When will the first sea run striped bass be caught on Nantucket in 2026?” Oz, the great and terrible (actually Grok) replied as follows: “Likely midto-late April through mid-May (most commonly early May), but as of early May 2026, it hasn’t been publicly reported yet or is imminent.”

Cool fact: I looked at the sources for this reply, and Grok had links to Bill Fisher Tackle, Nantucket Tackle, the Spring Sea Run Opener Instagram account and, of course, Yesterday’s Island!

Saving Our Heritage at Risk of Being Lost

Tucked away on our small island 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts, one of the most consequential craft preservation programs in the country is carrying on traditions that stretch back centuries. The Heritage Craft program, operated by the Nantucket Historical Association, is making Nantucket a focal point for the preservation of a variety of traditional crafts. Drawing students from the local community and from across the globe, the program offers a rare and immersive opportunity to learn from master practitioners, ensuring that the skills, knowledge, and cultural memory embedded in these crafts are passed on to a new generation. In a world that moves faster every year, Nantucket is a place where time slows down enough to remember treasured handmade traditions.

This January, the Nantucket Historical Association announced that its beloved Decorative Arts program was getting a new name. The change from Decorative Arts to Heritage Craft might seem slight. But for Mary Lacoursiere, the program’s artistic director and the driving force behind it for the past two decades, it was a moment of clarity several years in the making.

“We are not changing what we are doing,” Lacoursiere explained, “We are calling the program what it actually is.”

The rebranding began during a conversation on paper marbling about a year ago, when Lacoursiere was told that hand marbling is considered an endangered craft, even appearing on the UK's Heritage Crafts Red List of Endangered Crafts.

“Not knowing what that was, I did a deep dive into what that meant,” she explained. “The Red List is a UK list and is part of the Kings Trust...the focus is on artisan traditions and keeping those disciplines alive and thriving. [The Red List] categorizes the crafts from extinct, critically endangered up to viable...When I looked at their list, a large portion of workshops we have offered for the last 20 years is on that list.”

What Lacoursiere found changed the way she thought about her own program. The Red List doesn’t just measure a craft’s popularity: it measures the risk of traditional, skill-based crafts dying out, ranking them by their likelihood to survive for the next generation. It evaluates crafts based on the availability of

practitioners, training opportunities, and market viability, providing a comprehensive assessment of intangible cultural heritage. A craft can have thousands of enthusiastic hobbyists and still be in serious danger of disappearing.

The Nantucket lightship basket is a good example. NHA’s basket classes are offered year-round and consistently sell out: “the craft is popular because of the history, the story telling around this craft, and the pure pleasure of making your first or 40th basket.” But the number of basket makers who support themselves financially by doing it has dwindled sharply. “Years ago there were many Nantucket basket makers making a good living, all with waiting lists for their work,” explained Lacoursiere. “Now there are only a few makers left making a living at this craft...If the US had a Red List,” she added, “I feel Nantucket baskets would be on it.”

The NHA has been offering hands-on craft workshops for more than two decades from a campus at 4 Mill Street in the building known as the 1800 House. Classes included lightship basket weaving, scrimshaw, silversmithing, glass blowing, calligraphy, printmaking, shell art, fish printing, and more. The program has always been grounded in Nantucket’s artisan history. What Lacoursiere and her team now realize is the larger significance of what they have been teaching.

“We did not realize the bigger implication and the importance of what we were building. We just focused on what we knew was important. It has been an organic evolution over time, and we have built a place where historic craft can be learned, celebrated, and passed on.”

NHA Gosnell Executive Director Niles Parker framed the relaunch in similar terms. “Mary and the incredible instructors we have been fortunate to work with have been stewards of this important work for many years,” he said in the program’s official announcement. “It’s time for us to showcase it and share it with a broader audience to preserve these art forms for generations to come.”

A Special Plant with a Great Name

Nantucket is home to many rare plant species, but few bear its name. Nantucket Shadbush (Amelanchier nantucketensis) is a globally-rare shrub that was once thought to be limited to our island. This small shrub named after our island, is locally abundant. This woody plant is also found on Cape Cod, Long Island, and other coastal locations along the Atlantic coastal plain.

That’s right: even on Martha’s Vineyard, this plant is called Nantucket Shadbush.

Until 2011, Nantucket Shadbush was listed as a species of “Special Concern” in Massachusetts, under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act. While it is still considered uncommon throughout much of its range, additional plant records have led to the removal of its “Special Concern” status. It still remains rare in the northeast, and the island is likely home to some of the largest and healthiest populations.

The “Nantucket” part of the name comes from the fact that it was first described by botanist Eugene Bicknell after he collected specimens on Nantucket. The name “shadbush” comes from the plant’s coincidental blooming with the historical running of the shad (a local fish species). There are other shadbushes with similar flowering times. The Nantucket Shadbush, however, is locally the dominant shadbush.

The small, white flowers of our shadbush would be unremarkable later in spring and summer. Blooming first, before leafing out and before the showy blossoms of summer, gives this plant a special place as a harbinger of the show of flowers to come. It typically blooms in May-early June, producing cream-colored flowers with spoon-shaped petals. The unassuming flowers help distinguish this shadbush from its close relatives. Its pollen is sometimes born along the petals’ edges, rather than on anthers, which is a very rare plant trait: a phenomenon known as andropetaly

Like the island it is named for, Nantucket Shadbush flowers are smaller and much more understated than the showier, tall forms of Amelanchier. I like to think of them as demure and classy; lovely and delicate without the need for garish attention.

The small white Nantucket Shadbush blooms are said to signal the running of the shad (fish migration into estuaries around the island). It also signals the thawing of the soil – ready for spring planting. This type of nature’s synchronous timing is known as “coincidental phenology.” The various events aren’t reliant on each other, but their timing has evolved to coincide.

Unlike other shadbush species, Nantucket Shadbush is a low-growing deciduous, clonal shrub. It propagates itself mainly by sending up new stems from the root stock, rather than by producing seed. This is why you will find it in dense patches rather than individual solo plants. The more tree-like shadbushes (Amelanchier laevis and Amelanchier candensis) are also found throughout the island. Fun fact for identification is that they sometimes hybridize and can vary in local

In addition to key long-term operational benefits, critical space for upgraded artifact handling, treatment rooms, digitization workstations, and betterdesigned s,ltorage solutions, the property also had a move-in ready, first-class workshop. The workshop and additional space have become a second location for the NHA’s Heritage Craft classes, particularly those that require large specialized equipment.

This year, Heritage Craft is offering more than 100 different workshops—a number that keeps climbing as Lacoursiere continues to add new teachers and classes. The program draws students locally, from the mainland, from across the US, and there are even some students who travel internationally to take these classes. As of this writing, 40 of those classes are already sold out.

The workshop calendar at nha.org includes a range of handicrafts: needle-

work, scrimshaw, penwork, calligraphy, transferware, metalsmithing, bandboxes, letterpress, sailors’ valentines, decorative papers, and lightship baskets from the classic round basket to bangle bracelets, woodturning, decorative engraving, blacksmithing, bronze casting, and paper marbling.

That last discipline has become one of the more popular Heritage Craft sessions. The first 2026 marbling sessions—two classes, each running three full days from 9 am to 4 pm—sold out within 24 hours of being announced, drawing students far and wide. Each class accommodated 10 to 12 students, who by the end produce up to 80 distinct marbled papers.

The talented instructors for these classes were Dan and Regina St. John of Chena River Marblers, who have been practicing and teaching the art for decades, including at prestigious craft schools such as Snow Farm: The New England Craft Program, North Bennet Street School, and the John C. Campbell Folk School. These renowned instructors have a mission to keep hand marbling alive. “This is a craft that people don’t recognize…we take them on a journey…our mission is to get people who want to carry it on...it’s addictive,” Regina commented. they welcome students with a range of experience: “Come see us—it’s a lot of understanding the chemistry and fluid dynamics. Marbling is all problem solving. There’s a reason something is not working: we help figure out the problems.” Lacoursiere, who first managed to get into one of the St. John’s popular classes in April 2024 after years of trying, has become devoted to the discipline. She is planning to study with them again in Turkey this autumn.

“I bring in high-level teachers who have widespread followings,” Lacoursiere explained. That commitment to excellence extends across the Heritage Craft roster: sculptor and RISD professor Doug Borkman teaches bronze casting; wood-

turner Eric Goodson leads bowl-turning workshops; and master Nantucket basket maker Kathleen Myers teaches weaving of Nantucket lightship baskets.

In addition to teaching those who are pursuing an avocation, Lacoursiere also hopes to offer career paths and continuing ed for professionals. She commented on the challenges of pursuing a craft as a career: “Artists have always found a way to have many streams of income to make it all work. But I think it may matter more now with our culture slipping in ways that are not what we would like. What we do [at NHA Heritage Craft] and will continue to do is hire those artisans to teach, promote their work, and sell their wares. The thing we will do now, with more intention, is to expand some of our offerings to provide learning opportunities for professionals to gain additional skills and knowledge that they can use in their own practice and teaching.”

As part of NHA’s Heritage Craft, this September Master Basketweaver Myers will guide a small group of participants through a three-day lightship basket workshop aboard the Nantucket Lightship LV-112, docked in Boston Harbor. The idea is to return the basket to its origins: the craft was first developed by sailors stationed for years on the lightships that marked Nantucket’s treacherous shoals, who wove to pass the endless hours at sea.

It is exactly the kind of “destination class” that Lacoursiere sees as part of Heritage Craft’s future: immersive and place-based. Additional destination classes offered this fall include a Nantucket Windsor Chair Making Workshop in West Sussex, UK, and Embroidery and Textile Arts with the Royal School of Needlework in London.

Not every craft experience can happen on a lightship, of course, and not everyone can travel to

Nantucket or to the UK, so the NHA Heritage Craft also has online classes. Free workshops are online and premium paid courses that include mail-home kits with materials are offered to make the most popular workshops accessible to anyone, anywhere.

The newest online project now in the pipeline is a complete Nantucket lightship basket course, developed in collaboration with Kathleen Myers. “There is no online class where you can learn this tradition start to finish,” Lacoursiere explained. “We worked with Master Basketmaker Kathleen Myers to execute this workshop and are really proud of the result. It will be a basket that both beginner and experienced weavers will want to do as it’s a beauty!”

The online model also serves a preservation purpose that goes beyond the lessons. “You can document and transmit knowledge that is learned through hands, not books,” Lacoursiere explains. Once people have tried a craft in person, kits and video instruction help them continue the practice. “I find that once people have tried a new craft, they want another project that helps cement the information: and they begin an ongoing practice.”

Beyond the individual workshops, something has evolved at the 1800 House over the years that goes beyond class enrollment. Heritage Craft has become a gathering place where craftspeople share not just techniques but knowledge, problem-solving, and community.

“Craft Gam has become a place where people really share their skills with one another,” Lacoursiere says, referencing the program’s frequent informal gathering sessions. “People may come in with a problem that everyone there can help with. A real sharing of knowledge: that has been one of our strengths.”

Heritage Craft classes are structured to be accessible to all skill levels. Even beginning students leave with sophisticated, creative work; more experienced practitioners find they can take the same class to a higher level. The off-season classes are growing in popularity among Nantucket’s year-round residents. Grant funding and other support may help make those workshops more affordable to locals. Some classes, including basket weaving, welcome young adults from age 10 and older.

During the summer, the NHA’s Heritage Craft programs become a destination drawing visitors who specifically come to the island to spend a weekend making something beautiful and learning something rare.

The NHA has also worked to try to ensure that in-demand workshops don’t simply leave people out. “When possible, we often add sections when a class sells out,” Lacoursiere notes. “And we offer private group classes. We try to accommodate students.”

Whether the current surge of interest in handmade craft is a temporary cultural moment or something more lasting is a question Lacoursiere has clearly thought about. When asked, she replied without hesitation: “Lasting.” Her reasons circle back to the same forces that gave Heritage Craft its name. People are recognizing the importance of knowledge and disciplines that must be taught, practiced, and passed on by human hands. Artificial intelligence is reshaping the economy in ways that make skills that cannot be automated more valuable, not less. And

there is something about handicrafts—the concentration they demand, the community around the craft, the object it produces—that addresses human needs no algorithm can meet.

“We’ve been here offering this the whole time,” Lacoursiere says, “and did not even know it.”

The Red List revealed what the program already was: saving what is at risk of being lost. The new name, Heritage Craft, simply says it plainly.

One thing I love about Nantucket Shadbush are its leaves. They are not the showiest part of the plant, but the fuzzy underside of the ovate leaves can give it a blue-gray look overall. The red stems and woolylooking leaves have a lovely effect in spring.

Shadbushes as a group have many common names. I have been told that if a plant has many common names, it has been useful to people in many different areas over time. Shadbush, serviceberry, sugarplum, Juneberry… all are common names for the same type of plant. Nantucket Juneberry (shadbush) may help you remember when it will be in fruit. By June the fruit of the shadbush (known as a pome) will ripen to a dark red, almost purple, like a large blueberry. The fruit are edible to humans and are quite delicious. However, you have to beat the plethora of wildlife that also feast on shadbush. Nantucket Shadbush produces a small number of fruit overall. They are more of a snacking fruit than anything you could use to make a pie or muffins. The actual flavor can vary year to year depending on moisture content during maturation. With our continued drought conditions on Nantucket, I wonder how this year’s crop will taste.

Now is really the time to appreciate the shadbush. Once peak growing season hits and the fruits have vanished, the shadbush, in full leaf, seems to fade into the general flora where other plants are much showier. It will be later in fall when, again, the shadbush has some notoriety. That is when the

leaves turn a bright red-orange once again letting us know they are there.

To see Nantucket Shadbush for yourself, head to the outwash plains of the south shore and along the bike paths of Madaket and Miacomet. Nantucket Shadbush likes some level of disturbance (often in the form of management). Therefore, it can be found locally in our early successional habitats and along bike paths that are infrequently mowed. Nantucket’s early successional grasslands and heathlands are core habitat for this species and a great place to start. Dionis area and the Nantucket Land Bank property between Eel Point Road and Madaket Road (Trott’s Hills) are good spots to view this plant.

Ok, so that’s one authoritative resource. I needed further verification. It was time to turn to that bastion of truth, the master of the unknown, the provider of answers for kids everywhere since 1949: the Magic 8 Ball.

Oh, Magic 8 Ball, is it time for me to get out there to fish for the first striped bass? A good shake, a turn to see the viewing window, and voila! The answer was clear: “You may rely on it.”

Hmmmm… A little fuzzy, but that seemed to be a positive response. Let’s pose a follow-up question: “Magic 8 Ball, should I round up my fishing teammates and head out now?”

“Definitely.”

Ok, that’s conclusive. Science has clearly indicated that it’s time for me to get out fishing with Team Irredeemable Irrelevants. Our little trio has fished the team portion of the Spring Sea Run Opener tournament together for eight consecutive years. Our best finish was a third place, I believe. Hey, we live up to our team name, right?

I texted Dave Bold and Dave Small. Mr. Bold was ready, as he always is. To our surprise, Dave Small was already out on the beach, checking the south shore to see if maybe, just maybe, he could get us on the leader board first. We agreed to meet up to fish the harbor.

But first, a quick perusal of Instagram to see if there was any fishing news to be gleaned. And there certainly seemed to be. Nathan Skerritt, a fantastic local beach fisher (and maybe the best account to follow on Instagram @Strangeagent007), was in the bow of a small aluminum boat holding a monster striper!

My teammates and I analyzed Nathan’s picture like it was the Zapruder film. Is that Nantucket harbor? We concluded that we really couldn’t tell. So I hit Nathan up to get the straight shot. He told me the following:

“Nah, I’m over in Buzzard’s Bay with my wife. We’re visiting friends. My buddy took me out and put me on fish. It was absolute insanity today. All the fish we caught were 40 plus inchers. The water was boiling with feeding monsters. They were feasting on menhaden. It was wild!”

Nate may not have realized that he had built us up just to let us down. But that’s ok. Nathan was simply stoking the fire that we needed to get together and fish.

Our team planned to fish the outgoing tide on the harbor channel. We met up near the west jetty, put on our waders and hiked out into the extremely shallow water. A full moon tide had drained the area significantly.

The three of us spread out and fished hard for about an hour, to no avail. Enough was enough. We were all cold and hungry. Lunch seemed to be a great plan. We headed to the Surfside Taco Stand for a great meal and a much needed catch-up. I love being with the two Daves. Fishing is simply a conduit. And it worked again today.

Magic 8 Ball, is fishing only about fishing? The reply was, “No, definitely not.”

Magic 8 Ball, will someone eventually catch the first striped bass of 2026? “It is certain.”

And there you have it. Get out there, folks! You can’t catch them from the couch. Soon the fish will fill the shores ,and it will be (sing it with me) “…the most wonderful time of the year…”

Nantucket Island is just about 14 miles by 3-1/2 miles, and there are miles of bike paths to nearly every area. This means that riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to get around our island. NANTUCKET ISLAND BEACHES

NORTH SHORE AND HARBOR BEACHES

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
