First of 3 Sidewalk Art Shows for 2025
This Saturday, July 5 from 9 am to 2 pm, the Artists Association of Nantucket will hold their the first Sidewalk Art Show of the 2025 season in the dappled summer sun of the Nantucket Atheneum Garden, 1 India Street. More than two dozen AAN artist members will display their work for sale. The outdoor art show is free and and ideal event to gather with artists and art-lovers. Founded in 1930 by artist Maud Stumm, Nantucket’s Sidewalk Art Show is the oldest in the nation. Originally held for a few days in August, it was open to professionals and amateurs. “In 1960 AAN took the reins of the event and it is now one of our signature offerings,” said AAN artistic director Robert Frazier. “We host three Sidewalk Art Shows annually. This year, we will be back in the Atheneum Garden on July 5, August 16, and September 6.” In her book, From Clotheslines to Canopies: A History of Outdoor Art Fairs in America, Kathleen Eaton states that, “the earliest art fairs of record in America that are still in operation began during the start of the Great Depression. The first, founded in 1930, was the Nantucket Sidewalk Art Show—a small local event based on similar street fairs found in Europe.” “2025 marks the ninety-fifth year of the Sidewalk Art Show and the eightieth anniversary of the founding of the Artists Association of Nantucket. We are thrilled to be back in the Atheneum Garden and look forward to sharing our talented artists’ work with our island community,” said Tracey Sears, AAN executive director. The AAN Sidewalk Art Show is Saturday, July 5th, 9 A.M. to 2 P.M. in the Nantucket Atheneum Garden on India Street and is free and open to the public. Funniest Weekend on Nantucket July 10-12
The annual Nantucket Comedy Festival, which brings top comedic talent to Nantucket Island, opens at the Dreamland Theater on Thursday, July 10 at 7 pm with one of this festival’s most beloved traditions: an evening spotlighting some incredibly funny female comedians. This year’s Women’s Night of Comedy features nationally headliners, including Ariel Elias, Gina Brillon, and Mia Jackson. This event brings the laughs year after year, and 2025 is no exception. Whether you’re planning a girls’ night out, a date night, or just looking for a great time, this promises to be a hilarious and high-energy start to the Comedy Festival. As a major fundraiser for Stand Up & Learn™ (SUL)—a year-round educational program that teaches kids life skills through comedy—the festival is proud to highlight young performers. A Language without Words
The Nantucket Dance Festival is five-day celebration of dance with free classes and fundraising events that bring renowned dance and music artists from around the world to our island. Educational workshops and classes that are part of the Festival and continue through the year expand on how dance is integrated into the community and offer important lessons of self-awareness, physicality, and artistic expression to the next generation. The Festival includes programming that emphasizes diverse styles of dance to bring together professionals and students while creating collaborations with musicians and visual artists. For 2025 the Dance Festival performers include professional dancers experienced in Ballet, Ballroom, Broadway, Jazz, Krump, Haitian, Modern, and Tap, as well as musicians who play piano, viola, violin, and cello. Nearly 20 years ago, the Nantucket Dance Festival was started as a fundraiser for the Nantucket Atheneum. In 2023, the Nantucket Dance Theater took over the Nantucket Dance Festival, renewing the energy and purpose of this annual island event. Nantucket Dance Theater was founded by dancer, teacher, and Dance Space owner Michelle Birmingham with distinguished professional dancer Richard Schafer—both passionate about expanding dance opportunities on Nantucket Island. Their mission includes developing students into lifelong learners, providing spaces for students to develop their skills, and enriching the community through dance. Birmingham calls dance “a language without words that everyone can understand.” The Dance Festival includes many free programs and classes open to the public and a two ticketed events. Funds from the Nantucket Dance Festival directly support the year-round programming of the non-profit Nantucket Dance Theater, helping them to continue guest artist residencies, offer scholarships, and cover costs of production and staff. In addition to the year-round classes and performances they offer, Nantucket Dance Theater also gives weekly classes at the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club to “try to reach more children and to make dance more accessible to a wider audience,” Birmingham explained. “I started Nantucket Dance Theater so that everyone who wanted to dance could dance...I really believe that dance should be accessible to everybody...” The Dance Festival begins this Tuesday, July 8 with two sessions of Tiny Dancer Wonderland Party, designed for very young dancers. Tuesday evening, a

very special intimate performance called Live through the Looking Glass will explore the collaboration between live music and the different styles of dance that will be presented in the final Festival performance. This ticketed event is a collaboration with musicians from the Rossini Club and will allow audiences to get an understanding of how ballet, tap, ballroom, krump, theater, and modern dancers respond to rhythm, stay inspired, and approach their art. Following the performance, a cocktail reception will be held in the Dreamland’s Harborview Room. Tickets are available at Nantucketdancefestival.org/events On Wednesday and Thursday, July 9 and 10, different all-ages, all-levels dance classes led by Festival artists will be held in Nantucket High School. Classes will be offered Tap, Ballet, Modern, Krump, Injury Prevention, and Ballroom. Thursday, July 10 from 6 to 8 pm, a free Social Dance Night will be held in collaboration with the Nantucket Island School of Design & the Arts. World-class ballroom teachers, live local musicians, and food trucks promise to make this an exciting evening of socializing and learning with food, live music, and good conversation. The sensational Nantucket Dance Festival Benefit Performance on Saturday, July 12 provides an opportunity for hundreds on Nantucket to experience stellar artists sharing what they do best. The 2025 performance will feature many of today's outstanding choreographers, live musicians, and professional dancers, while also showcasing island youth! “I don’t do a lot of beach fishing. I’m a boat fisherman. And I never fish at night. You guys do this all the time.” My brother Billy seemed a bit nervous as I drove him and Dale Gary to Pocomo Point to fish the incoming tide in mid-September of 2020. Night fishing does require a different skill set, no doubt. It’s important to fish by feel. Generally, the targeted species is striped bass, the most nocturnal of the fish hanging around Nantucket. And yes, Dale and I do fish a lot at night together. Quite a bit. Both of us could pretty much cast and retrieve while blindfolded. “Don’t worry, Bill. We’ll be right there with you.” Billy didn’t look comforted. We put Billy in between us as we walked out onto the Pocomo Point sandbar. The three of us moved cautiously as we waded out. No one wanted to step into an unseen hole as we walked through the knee-high water. Chest waders, belts and headlamps were the uniform of the night. The bar that we waded out on was quickly disappearing, covered by the incoming tide. We were casting up-harbor, due east, with the lights of Nantucket town at our backs. It was a dark night and the current was running strong. The three of us threw identical lures, the tandem hook Sluggo soft plastic lure in black. Sluggos are fished slowly, with plenty of pauses and subtle twitches of the rod tip to make the soft plastic bait dance in the water. Dale is a master at fishing the Sluggo. I’m pretty good at it as well. Billy would just have to figure it out. Everybody has to start somewhere, right? Dale and I could understand Billy’s apprehension about fishing in the dark but we also figured that he would adapt in short order. And adapt he did. My brat little brother caught five—FIVE—striped bass that night, including a beautiful 35-inch fish that helped him significantly in the Inshore Classic beach fishing tournament. As for me and Dale, yeah, well, sometimes it’s just not your night, right? Dale laid it on Billy hard the whole way home: “We’re never taking him again. Never! His new name is Bad Luck Billy!” Billy laughed, but I know that he secretly delighted in the butt whupping he had just administered to the beach fishing hotshots. “Five to zero to zero! Nope, you’re not coming with us anymore, Bad Luck Billy!” “I still have that tore up black Sluggo hanging like a trophy in the basement!” Billy told me. “That night definitely got me back into beach fishing. I had not fished the beaches since high school.” Bad Luck Billy was back with a vengeance! Dale still laughs about that infamous trip: “First night fishing with him. We figured he’s a rookie, we’ll show him what’s up. Nope. He showed us!” Yes he did, Dale. And I’m glad that it happened. Brother Bill’s competitive flame went from a pilot light to a forest fire in very short order. He went at the Inshore Classic hard following that successful night. I loved it because Bill and I started fishing together. He would text me and we’d meet at one of the south shore beaches in the early morning darkness and fish until we’d have to break off for work. I loved being out there with my brother and rekindling a wonderful bond. We cheered each other on. We kept each other informed on what we were doing that was successful, and where we were catching. It was the best. Bill learned quickly. He gravitated to guys who are beach fishing gurus such as John Colton. Greg Chotkowski and Rick Ramos showed him how to fish the bucktail lure. Billy spent hours in his little grey Jeep Wrangler moving up and down Great Point, Surfside, and Smith’s Point, figuring things out. Billy graduated from the role of newbie to that of a mainstay in very short order. I loved it because he and I would cross paths in the morning. I’d be taking a charter group out, and we’d meet up with Billy as he was leaving the beach, heading to work. Billy would spill vital information that saved more than a few trips for me, I’ll tell ya! This doesn’t mean that Bad Luck Billy wouldn’t pay me a visit again. Let’s go back to August 31, 2023. That memorable day was the last day of the inaugural August Blues tournament. The wind was howling out of the northeast and the competition for the big prize—the longest three fish total—was completely up for grabs. Billy and I met up in the “south parking lot,” the cove on the inside portion of Great Point that faces back towards town. There were a lot of us out there that day, searching for the couple of fish that just might propel us to the top of the leaderboard. Fish were being caught sporadically in the south lot. The casting certainly was easier as the strong northeast wind was at our backs. But the fish I saw being landed were pretty much average. And average fish weren’t going to cut it. I told Billy that I was going to try the outside edge, casting into the stiff breeze. I continued on page 17

If You Build It, Purple Martins Will Come by Dr. Sarah Treanor Bois, PhD
Director of Research & Conservation at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Purple Martins have arrived on Nantucket for the first time ever. After three years of conservation efforts to support breeding habitat for the species, they have finally “set up house” at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, primarily due to the efforts of Libby Buck, Conservation Science and Land Steward with LLNF. First, a little more about purple martins: the latest seasonal residents on Nantucket Island. Purple martins are colonial birds that are the largest of the swallow family in North America. They are insectivorous, which makes them a very welcome addition to our island. The adult males are iridescent black and blue-purple; females are similar in size, but a more drab color with some blueish patches on the head. These large, chunky swallows have slightly hooked beaks (great for catching insects) and long, tapered wings. If you are lucky to see them, they are often soaring high in big swooping patterns. These flying patterns allow them to deftly maneuver and capture flying insects in their beaks, which are specially suited for hunting in the air. They’re even able to stay hydrated without ever having to land, swooping low over a pond to scoop up a drink on the go. Purple martins are cavity-nesters that often form breeding colonies. The lack of natural cavities for nesting has been one of the reasons cited for their regional population decline. Artificial nests and gourds have been used successfully in many areas to help populations. The idea of providing artificial nesting cavities is not a new one: multiple Native American tribes first established relationships with martins by providing gourds or other structures. The birds provided insect control and chased off hawks and crows, thus protecting crops. This practice of providing gourds as nesting sites has continued, with many people acting as “landlords” for the birds. In South Carolina, there is even a purple martin festival each year held in the town of St. Matthews, which is festooned with gourd condos. Maybe that will be the next festival idea for Nantucket Chamber of Commerce. Purple martins breed throughout North America from parts of Canada, running south through the United States as far south as the Gulf Coast and southern

Florida. They are also found in the mountains of New Mexico, Arizona, western Colorado, Utah, and along the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California and western Mexico. Despite this broad geographic range, they have been a species in decline regionally. According to the State of the Birds report published by the Massachusetts Audubon Society in 2011, purple martin breeding activity declined by more than 50% between 1979 and 2009. In Massachusetts, the populations have been slightly increasing, but purple martins are still one of the migratory species in decline regionally. This decline is due to factors such as competition for nesting sites with invasive species like European starlings and house sparrows, loss of natural nesting habitats, and widespread pesticide use reducing their insect prey. In the Massachusetts State Wildlife Action Plan, the purple martin is listed as one of the species of “greatest conservation need.” In the state, they are primarily found near the coast, but they have recently been documented along the Connecticut River Valley, where they historically nested. Nantucket wasn’t thought to be a good place historically for the birds mostly due to the traditional cold, wet springs that can keep insects, their favorite food, from flying at a time when the martins typically migrate back. But climate change may be helping purple martins expand their range or make parts of their historic range more hospitable. With warming temperatures and longer insect seasons, the conditions are shifting. Purple martins may be one of the first climate refugees moving into new areas. It was back in 2022 when Libby Buck first heard a talk at a conference about efforts to help the purple martin populations on Cape Cod. After the conference, Libby sought out Mary Keleher, the “Mother of Cape Cod Purple Martins” and asked if she thought Nantucket could be a good spot to set up nesting structures for martins. Family Activities & Night at the Museum
This summer, the Egan Maritime Institute’s Nantucket Shipwreck & Lifesaving Museum invites families to dive into interactive, hands-on activities that bring the island’s rich maritime and lifesaving history to life. Led by seasoned museum educators, these engaging programs are perfect for all ages. Additionally, our educators have designed a New Family Activity Booklet, which is available to all visitors. Designed to enhance your museum experience, the booklet includes games, puzzles, and scavenger hunts. It’s an excellent way for kids to engage with maritime history—and a fun souvenir to take home. From 10 am to 1 pm during July & August, museum goers may take part in a variety of rotating themed activities each day. On Maker Mondays, crafts will be offered, including Morse code and knot bracelets, model lighthouses, and rubber stamp quarter boards. Navigation Tuesdays bring nautical-themed fun such as scavenger hunts, decoding, semaphore flag communication, and fog fun. and on Seafarer Thursdays, the activities are focused on water and sailing skills, including cork boat building, knot tying, sea shanties, life jacket evolution, and buoyancy. During July, August & September from 2 to 2:30 pm, Collections Manager Tony Dumitru will offer a weekly artifact “show-and-tell” geared toward teens and adults, though curious kids are always welcome. Tony shares fascinating stories behind unique pieces from the museum’s collection. At the museum on Wednesdays and Fridays from 2 to 3:30 pm, staff will offer Hands-On Lifesaving Demonstrations: Breeches Buoy & Heaving Stick (outside on the lawn). Also during July and August, visitors can try their hands at using equipment to rescue Marshall, the museum mascot, with the breeches buoy, an historic lifesaving method. Hilarious, Hopeful, & Achingly Human On July 3, the curtain went up on Nantucket Performing Arts Center’s inaugural play: What the Constitution Means to Me by Heidi Schreck. Described as “hilarious, hopeful, and achingly human,” NPAC’s production stars awardwinning actors and Sconset residents Nina Hellman and Jeremy Shamos along with talented Nantucket student Danielle Lewis. Shreck’s play breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans, ultimately delivering the message: “We all belong in the preamble.” The play was a finalist for a 2019 Pulitzer Prize, and winner of a 2019 Obie and 2019 New York Drama Critics’ Circle award for Best American Play. Performances continue through July 17 in the theatre at 5 North Water Street. Tickets are available at nantucketperformingarts.org/events. A portion of all ticket sales for this play benefit A Safe Place. Also on stage at NPAC from July 9-11 is A Night for Swifties, featuring the incredible talent assembled by music director and producer Drew Wutke, with a lineup of powerhouse singers and musicians including local Nantucket special guests, who will bring Taylor Swift’s iconic tunes to island audiences.

headed off, promising to let him know if I caught anything. My idea paid immediate dividends. I put on my heaviest metal lure and fired it as far as I could. Soon I had a couple of much bigger blues to add to my score. I texted Billy: “Get over here!” Billy joined me moments later and we fished side by side, catching big blues one after the other. I did some quick math and told him, “I think I have the lead!” He congratulated me. And kept fishing. I went
home to cook dinner. Billy stayed and kept catching big blues. Needless to say, the winner of the inaugural August Blues tournament was Bad Luck Billy! I was happy for him. He deserved it, but OUCH! Billy wasn’t done winning. He teamed up with Greg Chotkowski and Rick Ramos and formed Team Go Bucktails. They dominated the 2024 Spring Sea Run Opener and finished second in this year’s tournament. what they thought of his 2024 performance. Rick replied, “As a teammate, he needs to fish more and babysit less!” Rick and Greg were having some fun with Billy, who certainly loves spending time with his grandchildren Edward, Kendall, and Evelyn born on June 5, 2025! But those two knew that they had a fine teammate fishing with them. Greg told me, “Bill is the silent fisherman. He shows up, puts in his time and is often rewarded.” Rick added, “Bill has become a master of fishing a few key spots such as Fisherman’s Beach, Point O’ Breakers, or Great Point. He’ll sit on a spot through an entire tide and make 1,000 casts until he connects. He’s a great teammate!” Soon my wife Beth and I started seeing Billy and his wife Debbie hanging out at Great Point on Sunday afternoons. We all enjoyed these impromptu meet-ups, even though fishing was not the primary focus. I asked Debbie what she thought about Billy’s newfound obsession with surfcasting. She told me, “He has met so many great people that have become friends. He really enjoys learning everyone’s stories. And he’s excited to share his fishing knowledge. He LOVES seeing the younger kids riding their bikes to fish! Billy knows that it’s something they will hold close to their hearts when they look back, just like he does.” So true, Deb! Billy was the first to tell me about the Goonies, his name for a group of young Nantucket teens who would ride out to the nearest beach and fish for hours. I could tell that Billy recognized their passion for fishing and, more importantly, the bonds that they were building. I’m sure that it brought him back to our childhood when we’d get together with the neighborhood kids and hike out to Miacomet Pond. I know that those days were some of my favorite times ever. Fishing with my brother brings me right back to those days and I wouldn’t trade it for the world—even if it means dealing with a little bad luck from time to time. regionally, working to create and maintain successful colonies in places like Falmouth, Mashpee, and Wellfleet. Purple martins have previously been known to migrate through Nantucket in the spring and fall, but they hadn’t nested here. Based on her own knowledge of the habitats, current climate, associated species, and available food, Buck thought Nantucket must be a good spot to set up a breeding location. That’s when the Field of Dreams adage seemed particularly appropriate: “If you build it, they will come.” Buck constructed a purple martin “condo” at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation property in 2022 with guidance from Keleher. The condos are actually a series of plastic gourds that mimic traditional nesting cavities. The gourd style is the preferred method due to its ease of cleaning and repair. Benefitting from Keleher’s expertise, Buck set up the gourds were on a high point overlooking the North Head of Long Pond and the grasslands below: perfect insect habitat! Then, all we had to do was wait...and wait... The expectation wasn’t to have birds right away. The idea was that if the gourds were set up and looked like good nesting habitat, migrating purple martins would see it and remember it for the following season. The gourd condo was adorned with two martin decoys and some fresh pine needles inside the gourds. They are very social birds, and if they see one of their kind, they will investigate. Despite her best efforts, Buck didn’t see any martin activity for three years. Now the wait is finally over. In May of 2025, pur-

It wasn’t until early June that birds were seen at the actual gourd site. And then, a week later on June 13, a pair was seen with nesting material. What was first thought to be two females attempting nest building proved to be a mated pair. The male is a sub-adult male just coming into breeding plumage (which explains the original identifica-

This was confirmed by a purple martin expert and then by the fact that the two birds produced a nest with eggs! As of Friday, June 27, there were four eggs in the nest. Nests typically range from 3 to 6 eggs per clutch, but they have as many as 8. They lay an egg a day, so we’ll have to see what we end up with for a total number. The arrival of nesting purple martins is considered a hopeful sign of their expanding range and opens possibilities for future conservation efforts on Nantucket. Purple martins exhibit strong site fidelity, meaning they tend to return to the same nesting locations year after year. At the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, we look forward to hosting and potentially expanding the colony. You can help martins and other songbirds by protecting the insects they depend on by not using pesticides and growing native plant species that support our native insects. To see them for yourself, take a walk on the LLNF public trails at 110 Eel Point Road. The gourds are visible from the trail and an interpretive sign details the purple martin natural history. You may see them swooping and soaring above or coming and going from the nest gourd. Take the Nantucket Limerick Challenge
Over decades, the word Nantucket has long been used in limericks because of its natural rhythm and inviting ease of rhyme. The first instance we found of Nantucket used in a limerick dates back to the 1800s. This famous series of limericks was discovered in a June 14, 1924 edition of a Nantucket newspaper. It all began when the Princeton Tiger revived the then well-known limerick printed below and the Chicago Tribune answered with the second limerick. The New York Exchange went one step further with the third rhyme, and the Pawtucket Times took over from there. Decades ago, Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket encouraged readers to continue the saga. You can read many of these—plus the special Pandemic Chapters—at YesterdaysIsland.com (just search for Limericks). This year, because of repeated requests, we again challenge our readers to write their own “chapters.” Remember: limericks have five lines that follow a specific AABBA rhythm scheme in the examples below: the end of the "A" lines (lines one, two, and five) must rhyme with each other and the end of the "B" lines (lines three and four) must rhyme with one another. Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle. Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk. Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach. Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally. Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship. Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer. Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.
SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES
Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong. Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities. Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally. Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities. Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities. Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.
WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES
Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.
EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES
Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset.
Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.
BAY & POND BEACHES
Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the
Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities. Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong. Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line. Over-sand vehicle permits are required: you can purchase them online at thetrustees.org/permits. Rental jeep day passes available at the rental site & day passes available for personal 4x4 vehicles.

At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line.
