by Suzanne Daub This week, from Thursday, June 12 through Sunday, June 15, more than 20 distinguished writers will be on Nantucket Island to talk about their craft in onstage conversations, readings, and panel discussions, and they will interact with readers in several informal social gatherings. Tim Ehrenberg, creator of Tim Talks Books and President of the Nantucket Book Foundation, says the four-day Nantucket Book Festival as a favorite among “year-rounders, summer residents, weekenders...the commonality is a love for books. There is such a genuine feeling of connection all weekend long...this connection has been at the root of the Book Festival since the very beginning.” According to Mary Haft, co-founder of the Nantucket Book Festival, this beloved event began in 2012, after Haft attended The Nantucket Project with independent book store owner Wendy Hudson in the autumn of 2011: “Wendy had been suggesting a book festival on Nantucket for a number of years…the galvanizing impetus was sitting side by side at TNP and understanding the power of community.” Haft (with Wendy Hudson) is also the co-founder of The Nantucket Book Foundation, which she describes as the “overarching framework under which all our work happens.” The Foundation operates “a consortium of programming for island students, to enlarge their world through the power of words...You reach a young person and you can change a world.” Having worked for years in key roles and on the board of The PEN/Faulkner Foundation, Haft had experience bringing writers into schools to speak to and interact with youth: “I saw how transformative an experience that could be…I wanted to have that outreach to our island children.” The Foundation’s Visiting Authors in Schools is key to its mission of unleashing “the power of words to change and enlarge our students' worlds. by Suzanne Daub Theater has the unique power to touch your soul, stir your emotions, expand your mind, and broaden your understanding of the world. But sometimes all you really want is to escape reality, and theater can help you do that too. Theater Workshop of Nantucket has opened their 69th season with a riotously funny, fast-paced farce about a romantic rendezvous gone awry. Set in a cottage in the English countryside in 1923, the play opens with a once-a-year tryst between Sylvia Van Kipness and her lover Beau—a treasured respite from reality until Sylvia, who decides she’s ready for more, confesses to having sent telegrams to both their spouses. What follows is a chaotic cascade of revelations, confrontations, and twists that hurl the audience into a whirlwind of surprises and comedy. The Cottage is a satirical exploration of fidelity and identity, lampooning romantic entanglements and questioning societal expectations, with a feminist wink at traditional gender roles. Each character is delightfully flawed. Sylvia (Ellyn Heald) is bold and manipulative; Beau (David Morton) charming but dim. Respective spouses Clarke and Marjorie (played by Abe Goldfarb and Drew Springer Miller) bring their own surprises, and Dierdre and husband Richard (Cathryn Wake and Atticus Shaindlin) crash in with secrets of their own. The acting is expressive and engaging, bringing an infectious energy to the stage and making every minute of the two-hour production enjoyable. Each cast member’s impeccable comedic timing and lively antics generate genuine laughter. Heald and Goldfarb react to the situations with vivid facial expressions that are as funny as the spoken lines and bring the comedy to life. Every punchline hits its mark—whether it’s yet another off-hand comment about Beau’s robe or the continued on page 19

by Steve “Tuna” Tornovish Oh man, what was I thinking to book a 6 am fishing charter on a Saturday? Well, it had to be, as some medical appointments had shuffled my week pretty thoroughly. I somehow woke up a minute before my alarm went off. Now I’m not flexing here, but this ability is something of a superpower. I was fairly beat from bass fishing the night before. Maybe not my wisest decision to go but those stripers aren’t going to catch themselves, right? I stumbled to the coffee maker, dumped in three scoops of whatever blend was in the blue coffee container, added some water and hit the magic button. My first task completed, I hopped online to see what kind of crazy was happening in the world. I read the news today – oh boy… As I lamented the affairs of the world, my coffee maker sounded different than normal. Well, as it turns out, that little plastic part on the top of the carafe, integral to its operation, had been left off. My coffee was not quite coffee. I now had very little time before I picked up my clients and nothing but some hot brownish water to get me moving. Not optimal. Looking up, I noticed I was late. My clients were staying at the Chestnut House. I had to get moving. I quickly scrubbed my pearly whites, tossed a half dozen fishing rods in the truck and boogied on downtown. As I drove, I heard a Beatles song playing in my decaffeinated pea of a brain: “Woke up, got out of bed, dragged a comb across my head…” A Day in the Life—wow, what a cool song! Quirky, catchy, trippy, enigmatic – yeah, Lennon and McCartney really crushed it with that song. I’m not the world’s greatest Beatles fan but I had a pretty strong suspicion that John Lennon had written most of the song and then sat down with Sir Paul to see what he might add to it. According to Lennon in an interview he did with Playboy magazine’s David Sheff in 1980, Paul had written the elongated bridge portion and, most importantly, added the tagged phrase, “I love to turn you on.” This song was somewhat risqué for 1967, the year that the Beatles released “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” It was ultimately banned by certain radio stations for the suspicion that it contained drug references. As with most things banned, the general public couldn’t get enough of it. The album sold millions of copies and A Day in the Life became

Zombie Apocalypse or Just Our Island Spring?

Director of Research & Conservation at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation n The zombie apocalypse has been on my mind a lot lately. That may sound dramatic, but if you’re someone who reads and watches fiction like The Last of Us, 28 Days Later, or the sequels: 28 Weeks Later and the new 28 Years Later, you know that the zombie hordes are all around us. For those who don’t know what I’m talking about, a lot of zombie or similarly-themed fiction base their monsters around the idea of humans being infected by something which takes over their brain function. And, like all of the scariest things, that fiction has some basis in fact. While I don’t actually think there is going to be a zombie apocalypse, the ideas posed in these fictional zombie origin stories have a ring of truth. For example, in the popular HBO TV series T (which is based on a video game), the origin for the zombies (called “The Infected” in the show) came about by regular people being infected with a fungus. Once infected, the fungus controls the actions of the host person. In the beginning of the series, there is an episode which illustrates how this fungus, and the fall of civilization, came to be. The fungal infection is a real-world parasitic fungus that controls the behavior of insects. In the show, the fungus Ophiocordyceps unilateralis mutates to be able to affect people. Ultimately, or so the story goes, the fungus gets into globally-distributed boxes of cereal. Worldwide chaos ensues and, well, you can guess the rest. So where am I going with this in a science and nature article? My love of zombie fiction and the natural world make it an easy connection in my mind. The inspiration for the fungus in The Last of Us also was the inspiration for my favorite zombie book of all time, The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey. In both pieces of fiction, the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis fungus, also known as the “zombie-ant fungus,” evolves to infect humans. In reality, Ophiocordyceps infects carpenter ants. The fungus grows in the ant’s brain, producing metabolites to control the ant’s brain function. The ant’s movements are controlled causing it to leave the ant colony and climb upwards, typically in the nearest tree. The ant dies after death-gripping to a leaf and then the fungal spores protrude from the dead ant body. The prevailing theory as to why this benefits the fungus is that the fungus needs the ant to get high enough to spread its spores. The fungus can’t travel that high up or that far alone. It needs the ant to ensure the survival of the fungal species. Ophiocordyceps unilateralis is currently pan-tropical, but also occurs in temperate forests in South Carolina and Florida. We shouldn’t expect to find it here, but a quick look at iNaturalist found at least two records from mainland Massachusetts and one from Rhode Island. They are listed as the “Complex Ophiocordyceps unilateralis” because the correct ID is trying to ascertained. It’s not likely to be the tropical species. Maybe it’s only a matter of time before it ends up here by climate change, perhaps? We’ll be on the lookout for any suspect ant behavior —zombies—in our area. Real and Unreal in Federal Gallery

A dynamic new exhibition showcasing large-scale photography juxtaposed with abstract and semi-abstract works in a variety of mediums has just opened today, June 12, in the Artists Association of Nantucket’s Federal Gallery. Titled Real and Unreal, this art show will be on display through Monday, July 7. Federal Gallery is open daily at 8 Federal Street from 10 am to 5 pm. “The show brings together a compelling mix of works that challenge and engage the viewer’s perception of reality,” explained AAN Artistic Director Robert Frazier. “From bold abstraction to interpretive realism, the exhibit highlights a diverse range of artistic choices and creative renditions.” A celebratory reception will be held at Federal Gallery on Thursday, June 26, from 5 to 7 pm and is free and open to the public. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet some of the featured artists and connect with fellow patrons. Light refreshments and small bites by 8Arms Chef Services will be served. AAN also will host their Summer Small Works exhibition in the Big Gallery beginning June 26. Big Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. All this is accomplished by the efforts of one full-time staffer, a devoted board, and dedicated volunteers in collaboration with Nantucket teachers and librarians. “It is us and we,” Haft emphasized, “a group united around a mission we all passionately believe in.” Kaley Kokomoor, Executive Director of the Nantucket Book Foundation (that “one full-time staffer”), said she is “always inspired by our work with island students...I am particularly passionate about our programs for young readers and am eternally grateful for the work of ...Mary Haft, creator of the Visiting Author Program, and to NBF board members, and Nantucket's middle and high school librarians Becky Hickman and Jill Surprenant for all they do to bring authors to Nantucket students.” The Foundation’s first visiting author was Jack Gantos in 2012: “it was a powerful experience for all of us,” Haft added. “I want to give a shout-out to the teams of teachers: they prepare our children so well for the visits. When our authors come into [island] schools, the kids have read the books, talked about the books, done art projects around the books...it’s a total partnership with our schools, our librarians.” It is the Nantucket Book Foundation’s annual Nantucket Book Festival that shares their mission beyond our island community to reach readers and writers everywhere. Now in its second decade, the festival has evolved from a modest local gathering into a well-known celebration of the literary arts. “Authors often tell us that our festival provides a unique opportunity for them to engage with their peers because we curate time and comfortable spaces for them to be continued on page 16

effect as the zombie strains: they are slowly changing the tissues of the host species that they inhabit. There are other species in our region that lack the same dramatic brain take-over but are still biotrophic. A biotrophic fungus lives on (or in) the host plant without killing it, at least initially. On Nantucket we have plenty of other examples of fungi altering their hosts for their own benefit. One of the most prevalent on-island is the black cherry knot. Go to any black cherry stand around the island—they are everywhere—many are easily found along Madaket Road. Black cherry knot is the name of what looks like black crusty crags on the sides of some branches. This hard black canker is actually the damage left after fungal infection. Black knot is caused by the fungus Apiosporina morbosa. As the name implies, the fungus is species-specific, growing on members of the Prunus genus including black cherry (Prunus serotina), beach plum (Prunus maritima) and many ornamental cherries. It grows Black cherry knot photo by Sarah T. Bois within the branch of an eastern black cherry tree for several months with no outward symptoms of disease. As the fungus grows, it releases chemicals that make the tree grow extra plant cells that are unusually large. This unusual growth results in the swollen, woody galls. Galls are made up of both plant and fungal tissue. One year after initial infection, galls can be seen as a swollen area of the branch with a velvety olive-green covering of fungal growth. galls on trunks are often cracked and may ooze sticky liquid. Spores are released during wet periods in the spring. The wind carries these spores to trees where they infect young green shoots or wounded branches. Black knot may not look great on cherry trees, but ultimately, they don’t kill a tree, they just continue to feed off the host. At the Linda Loring Nature Foundation (LLNF), we don’t intervene on black knot infections. But now that I’m thinking about zombie and fungal manipulation of plant tissue, I may look at them a little differently. Walking along the trails at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, another common fungus this spring has us seeing pink. Azalea leaf fungus (Exobasidium vaccini) is more common in cool, wet spring weather and humid environments. This spring has been typical for the Gray Lady, providing perfect conditions for this biotrophic fungus. The resulting fungus grows first on young, spring leaves. This developing leaf tissue is absconded by the fungus, which grows and then creates fruiting bodies out of the plant leaf tissue. At LLNF we see Azalea leaf fungus photo by Sarah T. Bois this almost
exclusively on black huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata)—one of the most common shrubs on the island. However, this fungus affects members of the Ericaceae plant family generally. On huckleberry, the fungus creates large flower-like structures that are pink and dusty white. It’s easy to mistake them for a flower, except that they come from the leaf and look nothing like a huckleberry flower. The white, powdery look are actually spores produced by the fungus. But is it harming the plant? This fungus is not considered a serious threat to the health of the infected plant. There is some research showing that flower production is ultimately affected, but there isn’t a population-level effect. For now, we admire the fungus for it’s beautiful manipulation. These foggy, humid days will surely have us seeing more. There are many other biotrophic fungi, like rusts and mildews, which are parasitic, feeding off of their hosts. Some kill the host plant, others just do minimal damage. On the helpful side, mycorrhizal fungi are a suite of fungi that are hugely beneficial to plants but also gain nutrients in return for their assistance with nutrient transport and potentially communication—a truly symbiotic relationship. Hopefully we will continue to keep the zombies at bay. We can always raise the drawbridge if necessary. What fungal relationships have you noticed around the island? an iconic hit. Sure, cool story, Mr. Tuna—now let’s get back to fishing, you say. And I say to you that A Day in the Life was a very important and influential song. Freddy Mercury doesn’t write Bohemian Rhapsody without it. And you might retort that Lennon and McCartney don’t write their masterpiece if Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys hadn’t put out the entire Pet Sounds album. And Paul’s band, Wings, doesn’t write Band on the Run, either! We can do this all day, kids...back to fishing it is. My clients surprised me, literally. I was checking my emails when they suddenly appeared at the passenger door of my truck, making me jump. Folks, please meet the wonderful Dustin and Katie Foerster from Seguin, Texas. I just knew that these two were going to be a blast from my texts with Katie while setting up this trip. They were completely understanding when I had to humbly request changes to their vacation schedule due to unexpected changes in mine. No problem, said Katie. And yes, they wanted to fish early. And, most importantly, they thought that a stop at Wicked Island Bakery sounded like a great idea on the way out to the fishing grounds. Yeah, I like these guys already! Dustin is a tall, athletic, and handsome cat. If he had told me that he had just left a career in major league baseball, I would have believed him. The beautiful Katie is an absolute dynamo. She reminds me of the women on a lot of the home renovation shows that my wife loves to watch: smart, determined, and not to be denied. They were fun right out of the gate. My need for coffee was significant at this point. We rolled out to Wicked Island and made a sad discovery—they don’t open until 7:00 on the weekends. Ouch! Well, I had promised the Foerster crew breakfast but it was going to have to wait an hour. We trucked it on over to the south shore to see if maybe we could catch something early. One of the absolute coolest things about being a fishing guide is getting to learn about the people that I meet and fish with. Katie and Dustin told me about their two children. Their son Nash is 7 and their daughter Charley is 6. Somehow we got talking about largemouth bass fishing. Dustin quickly pulled up a picture of little Nash holding a fantastic fish that he had recently caught on their home lake in Texas. Wow, what a clone of his dad! Nash and Charlie were hanging out
with Katie’s parents while the couple snuck away to Nantucket for a quick vacation. I was grateful to get to be a part of their getaway. We hit the south shore to see if by chance we could chase up a striped bass. Dustin and Katie showed me that they both knew how to cast well. That eased my caffeine-deprived mind. The water looked promising, but somehow the fish hadn’t gotten the memo. Bad news – no fish. Good news – it was now 7:00. We headed back to Wicked Island Bakery for coffee and goodies. As a bonus, my lovely niece Olivia was working, and I got to introduce her to my guests. I learned that Katie and Dustin were fans of two of our more famous Nantucket residents – Elin Hilderbrand and Dave Portnoy. Katie loved discovering the locations that Hilderbrand described in her many books that starred our little ol’ island. Katie delighted in seeing the Chicken Box, evidently a key setting for many of Elin’s stories. And why wouldn’t it be? She just had to look, having read the book… We headed to Great Point. As we rolled up the Polpis Road, I received a phone call from my friend Homer Ray. Homer and Matt Roberts had been fishing the Point hard and shared that bluefish were at the Point, feeding on squid. This was very welcome news to me. Bluefish had been scarce last season. I was hoping that this was an indication that this summer’s fishing would be much better. It didn’t take long to find out. Dustin hooked up almost immediately. My line went tight as well, and I passed the rod to Katie. Soon we had two small bluefish on the beach. Dustin loved throwing the Island X Hellfire, a topwater lure, and watching the bluefish smash at it. He used it to great effect, catching a nice gator bluefish that I would estimate was 32 inches long. The fish had ripped drag off of his reel, but Dustin worked the fish masterfully to the beach past a half dozen seals that I was sure would have stolen his catch. The fishing mission was a success! Our drive back to town required a quick viewing of Dave Portnoy’s mansion in Monomoy. El Pres was nowhere to be seen. Nor was Miss Peaches. We talked about Buc-ees, about the Savannah Bananas, about Ray Wylie Hubbard and the various challenges that life sends our way. I dropped my new friends back at their hotel. I drove home feeling that I am the most fortunate guy in the world to be able to do what I do. And, as Sir Paul would say: I love to turn you on...to Nantucket, and to beach fishing. Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle. Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk. Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach. Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally. Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship. Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer. Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.
SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES
Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong. Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities. Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally. Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities. Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities. Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.
WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES
Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.
EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES
Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset.
Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.
BAY & POND BEACHES
Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the
Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities. Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong. Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

The greater coastscape, which includes the federally owned Great Point Lighthouse and Nantucket Conservation Foundation land, is a double-fingered peninsula jutting northward between the Atlantic Ocean and Nantucket Sounds is so much more: a blend of sandy beach, rolling dunes, and forest uplands both rugged and serene. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. The refuge provides multiple habitats for an array of coastal plant and animal species, including heather and beach plum, a maritime oak forest & savannah of red cedar – the largest of its kind in New England – which offer shelter to deer. At the beachfront, watch for horseshoe crabs advancing in extremely slow motion, seals basking in the sun, and shorebirds skittering above the surf line.
