Dive into Dance Intensive This Week

The Nantucket Dive Into Dance Intensive from Monday, June 29 through Thursday, July 2, offers an unforgettable blend of artistic growth and summer fun for youth aged 8-18 during the week preceding the 2026 Nantucket Dance Festival. Dancers can participate in a full-week dance residency highlighting multiple dance styles or opt for drop-in workshops if they are unable to commit to the entire week.

This is a rare island opportunity to train with world-class instructors! Laura Kaufman & Robenson Mathurin will lead students through the week in styles that span ballet, theater, Haitian, modern and jazz. Kaufman is a versatile dancer and teacher and thrives on being immersed in many aspects of the dance world. She is currently dancing at The Metropolitan Opera, and she is co-director of Woman in Motion, a project-based dance company in NYC. Mathurin is a New York-based dance artist performing, choreographing, and teaching Haitian Folklore, Contemporary, Modern, Jazz, and Afro-based dance styles. He worked as a principal dancer in the international Compagnie de Danse Jean Rene Delsoin, and he created the platform Robenson Dance & Fitness to support better health and dance training.

This Intensive goes beyond basic classes to provide students with the experience of bringing a production to life alongside professional dancers in a supportive learning environment. Dancers will be part of a final performance on the Nantucket Performing Arts Center stage for a live audience of family and friends.

A Lightship Basket Collector’s Dream

Greg and Judi Hill of Hill's of Nantucket are offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own the tools used to create thousands of exquisite lightship baskets—approximately 70 handcrafted Nantucket lightship basket molds by the late Master Basketmaker Paul Willer.

Paul Willer, who crossed the bar in 2025 at the age of 95, was not simply a weaver of Nantucket lightship baskets: he was a maker. The distinction matters enormously. Over the course of a career spanning more than five decades, he hand-crafted every component of his baskets from scratch: the molds, the staves, the rims, the knobs, even the bone carvings that adorned them. He is credited with producing more than 2,000 lightship baskets, nearly all of his own original design. He is celebrated for a string of innovative “firsts” in the tradition: the first square lightship basket, the first ice bucket basket, the first bud vase basket, a Bic lighter basket,and the open salts that became beloved collector pieces.

Now, the tools of that extraordinary creative life—approximately 70 of Willer’s handmade molds—are being offered for sale by Greg and Judi Hill of Hill’s of Nantucket on Straight Wharf. For serious collectors of Nantucket craft, this is a rare and perhaps unrepeatable opportunity.

Paul and his partner Peter Guarino arrived on Nantucket in 1969 (Paul fell in love with the island as the ferry came into the harbor), and a few years later, in 1971, they purchased and renovated an Orange Street property, transforming it into The House of Orange, a beloved seven-room inn that became a fixture of island life for three decades.

Greg and Judi Hill first met Willer in 1976 in Hawaii. Judi was among the first to sell Paul’s baskets during his early days, and the friendship deepened over the years. When Paul and Peter decided to close The House of Orange in 2004, they began clearing out its contents. It was then that Judi and Greg turned to Paul with a straightforward question: what are you going to do with all your basket materials?

“I don’t know,” Paul replied. “Maybe I'll just take it to the dump.” Judi wasn’t sure whether he was joking. “This was his life’s work of creativity,” she recalls. The Hills didn’t hesitate: they offered to buy it all.

“Basketmakers don’t make all these components from scratch anymore,” she said. They knew what was at stake.

That distinction between a weaver and a maker is at the heart of what makes Paul Willer’s molds significant. Today, most lightship basket weavers purchase their tops, bottoms, and rims pre-made, and even molds can be commercially sourced. Paul Willer did none of that. Inspired in the early 1970s by basket expert Edgar Seeler who gave him his very first mold, Paul went on to design and handbuild every mold he ever used. They are his art. Others copied his designs over the years, but Paul’s molds are the original.

Willer’s basement workshop at 25 Orange Street was where all of this happened. Patiently working with a band saw, boiling green oak staves to make them pliable, and steaming the long rims using a pipe rigged to a teakettle, he produced baskets of remarkable consistency and refinement. His lightship baskets are tightly woven with flat oak staves, finished with orange shellac, and built with rims that are not nailed—details that set them apart immediately to anyone who knows the form. The market for Paul Willer’s Nantucket lightship baskets has always been competitive. Gail Osona of Rafael Osona Auctions once noted “Our collectors absolutely love his work. When we have them, they are highly coveted—they fight over them.” The molds that produced those baskets carry their own compelling argument for collectors: they are the origin point, the creative intelligence behind everything that came after.

The collection Judi Hill is now offering spans the full sweep of Paul’s creative range. There are approximately 70 molds in all, from a mold the size of a coffee table to the tiny forms he used to weave necklace baskets. Paul was renowned for his miniatures, including earring baskets the size of pencil erasers and nested sets small enough to wear. Among the molds are forms for many of his pioneering designs, including the square basket, the ice bucket, and the bud vase.

Steamship Therapy

There is a specific moment, somewhere out past Brant Point, when the island finally lets go of you.

It doesn’t happen at the dock. It doesn’t happen pulling away from Straight Wharf while tourists wave cocktails around on the upper deck and kids throw popcorn at gulls. For a while, Nantucket still hangs onto you. You can still see the church steeples over the rooftops. The masts in the harbor still stand upright against the sky. The shoreline remains detailed enough that you can pick out individual houses, and, for a few minutes, your mind keeps trying to convince itself that you’re still there.

Then the boat turns slightly northwest.

The harbor opens into open water, the wind sharpens, and the island suddenly flattens itself into a thin gray line sitting low against the Atlantic. That’s the moment—the psychological crossing. The invisible tether snaps loose and your brain reluctantly accepts the truth: you are no longer on Nantucket.

People who didn’t grow up around islands think the Steamship is just transportation. A glorified ferry ride. But for the people who actually live here, the boat has always been something much heavier than that. It’s a waiting room between emotional states. A floating decompression chamber. A place where people quietly rehearse departures and returns.

You can learn almost everything about a person by watching how they behave on the Steamship.

The summer people board with tote bags, sunburns, and the frantic energy of vacation running out too quickly. They treat the ride like the closing credits of a movie they aren’t emotionally prepared to end. Their conversations grow louder as the island shrinks behind them, as though volume alone might postpone Monday morning waiting for them back in Connecticut or Manhattan.

The year-rounders are quieter.

Always Be Curious

There’s a wonderful Walt Whitman quote that had my attention today. The esteemed poet, writer, and all-around observer of his fellow humans said, “Be curious, not judgmental.” Sage advice, right?

So how did I come to know this thoughtful quote? No, it’s not due to my amazing scholarship. It’s because this quote was the keystone to one of the most memorable Ted Lasso scenes ever filmed. Ted was challenged to a darts match by the evil and pompous Rupert. Rupert had Ted pegged as an American hillbilly, a rube ripe for the picking. But Rupert should have been more curious and not so judgmental. Ted, it turns out, was left-handed. And had spent his formative years in a sports bar, playing darts while he waited for his father. Ted stomped Rupert, the bar went wild and we gained some valuable insight about the strange and wonderful Coach Lasso.

Today, I got curious. Or more curious. Curiouser? Yeah, I guess I was curiouser about a couple of cool things that are seen in the area of Coatue but not in other parts of the island. The two items in question are the Coatue cactus and what appears to be a Spanish moss. The moss grows only on two cedar trees on Coatue. These two items are quite normal in other places but are unique on the island. How did they get there? And why are they where they are, and not in other places? Hmmmm…

My sparks of curiosity turned into flames when Charles Manghis recently posted a picture of his Coatue cactus, saying, “Caroline the cactus lives outside on my porch year-round and is doing quite well, as you can see.” Yes, she certainly is! Ok, I needed to find out more about the Coatue cactus and pronto. But how? My curiosity grew.

Pondering these questions reminded me of one of my personal quotes (write this one down, kids!): “If you’re not smart, you need smart friends.” And I am blessed to have a smart friend named Burton Balkind, aka Spruce. Spruce is a curious guy. What I mean to say is that Spruce wants to know more about things around him and makes the effort needed to learn those things. Spruce is also a tour guide for the Trustees of Reservations, the organization that manages the Great Point refuge. Thus, Spruce is wholly qualified as a smart friend.

“The Coatue cactus is actually a prickly pear cactus,” Spruce explained. “There’s a couple of theories as to how they ended up on Nantucket. The most plausible theory is that their seeds were carried by birds. So either the seeds landed on the island by defecation or maybe were caught on a bird’s foot.”

So bird poop brought the cactus to the faraway island of Nantucket. Ok, that would work, I guess. But why do they survive and thrive in that area of the island?

“The Coatue sand is super porous and dry. That works for the cactus. The prickly pear cactus like a semi-arid climate. And that’s really what you have in Coatue. The sand won’t retain rain like other soils on the island will. They can thrive because it is like a desert sand.” See? A Multitude of Mole Crabs

If you’ve spent any time on the south shore of the island (i.e. the wavey beaches) you have probably seen one of our most resilient residents. They may be a bit secretive, a little camouflaged, but these shoreline residents are a fun find and great to explore with kids. We’re talking about the Atlantic mole crab.

Mole crabs are crustaceans in the family Hippidae, found in nearly every coastal region of the world except the Arctic and Antarctica. Twelve species in the genus Emerita are abundant on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of the United States, and other parts of the world. The mole crab we find on Nantucket is the Atlantic mole crab (Emerita talpoida). The mole crab (also commonly known as sand crab or sand flea) is a small (0.5-2 inches) but mighty sea creature about the size of your thumb that lives just below the surface of the sand. They dig into the sand at the shore break and move up and down with the tide in order to stay in wet sand but not get turned over by wave action.

Mole crabs are uniquely adapted to live in this relentless environment of constant movement and changing tides of the turbulent, wave-swept shoreline (the swash zone). On Nantucket and nearby Massachusetts beaches, you can find them buried in the damp sand during the spring and summer months. Keep an eye out for tiny, V-shaped air bubbles or shifting sand just as a wave recedes. They migrate up and down the beach with the changing tides, always staying right at the water’s edge. Chances are you have most likely encountered mole crabs without even knowing it. Perfectly camouflaged, if one is exposed by a wave, a person’s foot, or a child digging at the surf’s edge, it will dive back under the sand before you even noticed it’s there.

The egg-shaped body of the mole crab is hydrodynamically sculptured for living in wave-pounded and shifting sands. They are called mole crabs, of course, because they burrow, but only in wet sand. They cannot dig in sand that is too dry or firmly packed. It has to have enough water to separate the grains and make the sand penetrable.

Mole crabs are filter-feeders. They bury themselves backwards into the sand

and use their feathery antennae to filter plankton and algae directly out of the crashing waves. Its head is pointed upward facing the surf, its stalked eyes and its small first antennae, which it uses as kind of a snorkel for respiration, projecting from the sand. When a wave goes out, it curls its large, feathery second antennae backward and uses them as nets to capture the phytoplankton. The food is scraped from the antennae by other specialized, brush-like appendages and delivered to the mouth.

When washed back out to sea, most mole crabs become food for other animals. They serve as a crucial food source for shorebirds, marine mammals, and near-shore fish like striped bass.

clues. Among the surf clam fragments, seaweed, and other flotsam and jetsam, you may find mole crab shell fragments. The wrack line will be full of these fragments in an area with a healthy mole crab population – they definitely congregate in numbers. Then look to the shoreline where the waves action meets the wet sand. When you see the tiny holes in the sand at the water’s edge, dig there and chances are you will find some buried mole crabs.

Like other crabs, these little one-inch creatures have ten legs, but theirs are adapted for swimming and digging, not for walking or defense—they have no claws. This makes them great candidates for checking out with small children. They even may try to burrow into your hand making for a tickly encounter. My son and I used to dig them up and have “mole crab races” to see whose chosen crab would reach the water first.

At places like Cisco or beaches west and east of there, you usually only have to dig a shallow trench with the heel of your foot parallel to the water to see clusters of them. They try to burrow back down into the sand but are easily scooped up and put into a bucket.

They also make good bait for beach fishing. Mole crabs are an important food source for our stripers at certain times of the year. Because they serve as a crucial food source for shorebirds and fish and act as an indicator of coastal health, recent declines in some areas have raised ecological concerns. On-island, some people, including beach anglers, have noticed mole crabs aren’t as abundant on certain beaches as they once were.

While Atlantic mole crabs are generally abundant, scientists and environmentalists have observed potentially concerning regional population declines. As key indicator species for coastal health, their numbers fluctuate based on human activity and environmental shifts.

Research indicates that mole crab populations are highly susceptible to anthropogenic (human-caused) and environmental changes. One possible threat is habitat alteration. Activities such as dredging and beach nourishment can have a direct impact on crab populations. These actions can bury the crabs too deep

A Collector’s Dream

The molds themselves are objects of beauty. Made from different hardwoods, they carry the warm patina that comes from years of use in a working studio. The varied colors of the wood, the subtle marks of the hand-tool process, the wear of decades—all of it is part of their appeal. “They are like works of art,”Judi commented.

Some of the molds are in working condition, and a skilled basketmaker could put them to use today. Others may be better suited for display, a middle ground between tool and artifact.

“I wanted to preserve the tradition,” Judi says of the decision she and Greg made more than twenty years ago when they stepped in to save Paul’s materials from an uncertain fate. “I think Paul would be happy if he knew I could sell his work...what he used for his craft.”

Paul Willer’s ingenuity and dedication to the lightship basket tradition earned him a place among the great names in a Nantucket craft being celebrated this week at the Nantucket Historical Association’s annual Baskets, Bubbles & Bourbon event. His molds are a direct line to that legacy: functional, beautiful, historically significant, and one-of-a-kind.

Given the significance of the collection and the depth of interest collectors have historically shown in Paul Willer’s work, early inquiry is suggested.

Always Be Curious

that I obtain a book by Peter Brace. Peter is wellknown as a thoughtful man, a thorough researcher, and a very cool guy who has led many Nantucket visitors on island walking tours. Ok, Spruce, I can take a hint. I rolled right on down to Mitchell’s Book Store and purchased Walking Nantucket by Mr. Brace.

I was immediately fascinated by this book. Of course I opened it right up to the section about Coskata Pond, the large estuary that helps define the Coatue section of Great Point. Brace detailed how a huge storm in December of 1896 formed what became known as Haulover Pond. Nantucket fishermen would row up harbor and haul their fishing dories over the narrow spit of land to get to the eastern shore of the island. Well, the storm made that easier for a bunch of years, opening the spit directly to the ocean.

My quest for knowledge about the Coatue cactus got sidetracked as I fell into the rabbit hole in the Coskata Pond chapter that discussed a Native American named Mud Turtle. I won’t spoil the story for anyone, but suffice it to say that Mud Turtle was enamored with the daughter of a chief of another tribe. He courted her the real old-fashioned way—he kidnapped her. The young lady had other plans and hoofed it out of Mud Turtle’s Coskata cave as soon as she could. Mud Turtle ended up with an arrow in his back. Legend had it that his body would not stay buried and that Mud Turtle is still poking around Coatue, looking for his lost love. Great: like I needed

one more thing to worry about aside from mosquitoes and potholes when I’m out there fishing at night!

I proudly texted Spruce a picture of my brandnew book. Spruce returned a photo to me with a caption that said, “Wrong book.” He had been referencing another Peter Brace book titled, Nantucket: A Natural History. Oh man! I wasn’t going to fight traffic again, so that book will be purchased on my next sojourn into town. I encourage everyone to pick up your own copies of Peter’s books. The one I bought is captivating, and my smart friend said the same about the next.

Hey Spruce – what about the Spanish moss? “It’s neither Spanish nor moss – it’s a lichen called Old Man’s Beard. It thrives in moist air environments. Our soil is dry, but our air is very moist. Even in super dry conditions there’s still a lot of moisture. There are some more cedar trees between markers 2 and 6 that have it.”

I might have to change that name to ZZ Top moss. It’s certainly reminiscent of the beards sported by Billy F. Gibbons and (the late, great) Dusty Hill. But regardless, my curiosity paid off. I learned a lot about the mysterious Coatue cacti. And the Old Man’s Beard. And the ghost of Mud Turtle. Stay curious, my friends. And thank you to my smart friends like Spruce, Charles Manghis, and Peter Brace.

or change the sand composition, impacting their swash zone habitat. Heavy human foot traffic, mechanized beach cleaning, and off-road vehicles compact the sand and directly trample mole crabs. And while the beaches on the south shore of Nantucket haven’t been manually altered, a significant amount of sand has shifted through the system.

Another threat to mole crabs that has been studied on the west coast is microplastics. Since mole crabs eat small plankton and other invertebrates in the water, they can ingest microplastics, which can lead to higher mortality rates. Climate-related factors such as ocean acidification, harmful algal blooms, and compounding problems like sewage runoff degrade the delicate water column that larvae depend on during development causing further harm.

Most of the data about mole crab threats and declines comes from the West Coast, where populations have crashed on some beaches. Hopefully, we can learn from those areas, and any observed east coast decline is just a blip. Mole crabs are pretty adaptable, and their toughness may help them be more resilient.

How can you help? Right now, we’d love to get a baseline of where our mole crab populations are and if they seem healthy. Having a baseline will allow us to track any declines. To do that, we are documenting mole crab locations using iNaturalist. This can add to the biodiversity information for the island and provides data on the health of the mole crab population. There is information about how to make an observation on help.inaturalist.org.

They board carrying groceries, tool bags, backpacks, exhausted children, or cardboard boxes held together with too much tape. Most of them don’t even look at the water anymore. They’ve done this crossing in every possible condition the Atlantic can invent: flat calm August afternoons, black November seas that send coffee cups sliding sideways across the cafeteria tables, dense fog where the world disappears entirely except for the mournful blast of the horn every thirty seconds.

After enough years, the crossing stops feeling novel and starts feeling strangely philosophical.

Living on Nantucket forces you to accept that every single thing in your life depends on weather and timing. You cannot dominate the ocean into cooperation. The Steamship might leave late. The freight might not arrive. The fog might roll in so thick the radar becomes more important than human eyesight. A forty-mile-an-hour northeast wind can dismantle your plans more efficiently than any personal failure ever could.

The mainland teaches people that everything should happen immediately. Nantucket teaches the opposite. Out here, impatience becomes a form of suffering.

You see it all the time on the boat. The new arrivals pacing near the passenger doors before docking, clutching expensive weekend bags and checking watches as though personal frustration might somehow force the vessel to move faster through the harbor. Meanwhile, the old islanders sit calmly in cracked vinyl seats drinking bad coffee, understanding something the others haven’t learned yet: the boat arrives when it arrives.

The Atlantic does not care about your schedule.

There’s a strange honesty to that.

Maybe that’s why the ride home always feels different than the ride away.

Leaving the island often carries a subtle anxiety to it. Even when you want to leave, there’s an emotional static humming underneath the trip. You feel

Steamship Therapy

untethered somewhere around the middle of Nantucket Sound. The farther the island disappears behind you, the more the mainland starts rushing back into your nervous system: traffic, notifications, deadlines, fluorescent lights, conversations that move too fast and say too little.

But coming home is different.

The return trip has a kind of ceremony to it, especially in winter.

You board in Hyannis under dull gray skies carrying groceries that cost half as much as they do on-island. The parking lots are crowded. Everybody looks hurried and vaguely irritated in the particular way mainland people always seem to look. Then the boat pulls away from the dock, and little by little, the static begins to dissolve.

Phones lose signal somewhere out in the Sound. Conversations soften. People stare out the windows longer. The rhythm of the engines underneath the floor settles into your chest like a metronome.

Then eventually someone spots Brant Point Light.

No matter how many times you’ve seen it, there is always a small emotional shift when the lighthouse appears through the fog. Shoulders loosen...the nervous system exhales. Home comes back into focus slowly at first: the jetties, the church steeples, the cranes at the boat basin, the cedar-shingled faded silver from salt and time. And suddenly the island feels less like a location and more like a psychological condition.

There is something deeply comforting about living in a place that cannot pretend to be disconnected from reality. Nantucket has money, certainly. Extraordinary money. But the ocean remains the final authority here. The fog still shuts everything down. Pipes still freeze. Storms still rearrange beaches overnight. Wealth can insulate people from inconvenience, but it cannot negotiate with tide charts or gale warnings. That keeps a certain humility alive, even if only barely.

The Steamship itself reflects this strange democracy.

Millionaires in pressed cashmere sit beside exhausted carpenters sleeping upright against the windows after fourteen-hour workdays. Landscapers with dirt still on their boots stand beside hedge fund managers reading the Wall Street Journal. Charter captains, bartenders, painters, nurses, fishermen, and tourists all drift together across the same cold stretch of water at 12 to13 knots.

For an hour or two, everybody submits to the exact same conditions. The boat rocks all of them equally. And maybe that’s the real therapy of it.

Modern life gives people very few transitional spaces anymore. Everywhere else, movement is instantaneous. You board an airplane in one emotional state and arrive somewhere else before your brain has time to catch up. But the Steamship forces you to sit quietly inside the transition itself. You cannot skip across the water—you have to cross it. You have to physically watch one world disappear before another one arrives.

That kind of slowness does something to people.

It gives grief room to breathe. It gives perspective time to settle. It allows anger to cool off somewhere between the mainland and the shoals. More life decisions have probably been made silently on the upper deck of the Steamship than most therapists would care to admit.

People have fallen in love out there.

People have ended marriages out there.

People have scattered ashes into that gray water.

People have stood at the rails in February wondering whether they still had enough strength left to stay on the island another winter.

And somehow the boat just keeps running.

Back and forth.

Through fog...through ice...through tourists...through funerals...through weddings...through hangovers...through heartbreak...through another summer...through another winter.

Like most things on Nantucket, the Steamship teaches the lesson slowly. You are not fully in control. The weather will change. The crossing will eventually end. And if you are lucky enough to have a place that still feels like home when the lighthouse comes back into view, then you are already wealthier than most people realize.

Nantucket Island is just about 14 miles by 3-1/2 miles, and there are miles of bike paths to nearly every area. This means that riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to get around our island. NANTUCKET ISLAND BEACHES

NORTH SHORE AND HARBOR BEACHES

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Make sure you don’t miss the fishing while you’re here on Nantucket! The HERBERT T sport fishing boat will take you to where the blues are biting. Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock. The HERBERT T is fully licensed and insured and is fully equipped electronically. While you’re on Nantucket, do as the islanders do - catch some blues! $150 per person (minimum of 2 people). The Nantucket Historical Association preserves, interprets, and shares the diverse stories of Nantucket with all audiences through its collections, properties, programs, and research. In addition to the Nantucket Whaling Museum, the public is invited to visit THE OLDEST HOUSE, built in 1686 and believed to be the oldest residence on Nantucket still on its original site; THE OLD MILL, said to have been built in 1746, this is the only surviving mill of 5 that once stood overlooking Nantucket town; THE HADWEN HOUSE, a Greek Revival mansion built in 1846; GREATER LIGHT, a stunning and unique home that was built as a barn in 1790 and renovated & repurposed in the 1930s into a home that illustrates the era of Nantucket’s art colony days.
