Island Juneteenth Festivities This Week

Nantucket Island’s Juneteenth celebration has become an annual tradition on our island. The festivities transform York Street into a block party with music, food, local vendors, arts and crafts, family-friendly activities — drawing attendees of all races, ages, and backgrounds. The celebration will be held this Saturday, June 20, with a special ceremony the day before, Friday, June 19.

African slaves were brought to Nantucket during the mid-1600s. In 1783, Massachusetts abolished slavery, though the practice had faded on Nantucket years prior to the statewide mandate. In 1773, a landmark local court decision, Swain v. Folger, forced a whaling master to pay wages directly to Prince Boston, effectively ending forced labor on-island. The whaling industry, which defined Nantucket’s economy for much of the 18th and 19th centuries, offered one of the few arenas where African American men could find employment and even advancement, sailing alongside men of all backgrounds with earnings based on skill. In 1775, the last known Nantucket slaveholder, Benjamin Coffin, filed the final local deed of manumission to free his slaves.

By 1820, Nantucket’s Black population had grown to 274 people, and a vibrant, self-sustaining community had taken root on Nantucket

The 2026 Juneteenth celebrations on Nantucket will begin this Friday, June 19, when a new monument at the Historic Coloured Cemetery will be dedicated honoring two of Nantucket’s significant historical figures: Captain Absalom Boston and Hannah Cook Boston. The ceremony will be held at 9 am, with a rain date of Saturday, June 27, at the same time and location.

Captain Absalom F. Boston was a third-generation islander born on Nantucket in 1785. His mother was Wampanoag and his father: Prince Boston, Absalom’s uncle, won the landmark jury trial on Nantucket concerning payment of wages.

Like many young Nantucket men, Absalom went to sea at age 15. By 1822, he was captain of The Industry, commanding Nantucket’s very first all-Black

Summer Drama & Art for Nantucket Youth

In a place as culturally rich as Nantucket, it’s fitting that summer activities go beyond the beach.

This summer, Theatre Workshop of Nantucket, the Nantucket Dreamland and the Nantucket Island School of Design and the Arts (NISDA) have packed their summer calendars with programs for children and teens that range from discovering theatre and full-scale musical theatre productions to clay workshops, outdoor drawing, mask making, and intergenerational art-making.

Theatre Workshop of Nantucket is again offering their theatre programs for youth. During the July session of Take It from the Top, students ages 10 to 18 with all skill levels will train side-by-side with professional Broadway teaching artists in a dynamic, one-of-a-kind Broadway Intensive designed to spark creativity, build confidence, and elevate performance skills. Throughout this high energy week, participants will dive into all three triple threat disciplines: music, dance, and acting, while exploring a range of musical theatre styles and influences.

In August, Theatre Workshop’s Take It from the Top offers an advanced workshop. Ages 10 to 18 will join an exclusive workshop of the Broadway hit How to Dance in Ohio. Participants will work directly with members of the show’s original creative team to help craft a special one-act version of the musical for licensing. This advanced workshop is all about creative collaboration, exploring new works, the development process, and unforgettable storytelling. Students will explore the show’s dramaturgy, characters, music, choreography, and scene work—and perform the piece at the end of the week for friends and family.

The Perfect Gray of Nantucket Island

People come to Nantucket looking for color.

They expect blue hydrangeas, white sailboats, red sunsets bleeding across the harbor, and the sharp green of beach grass moving in the wind. The postcards sell the island in bright tones. Summer magazines photograph it under impossible June sunlight with women in linen dresses carrying wicker bags down shell paths toward champagne dinners.

But the real color of Nantucket has always been gray.

Not dull gray. Not lifeless gray. A living gray. The kind that only arrives slowly, after years of weather and salt and endurance.

The perfect gray cannot be manufactured. People have tried.

You can walk through certain newer neighborhoods and spot the imposters immediately. Freshly stained shingles dipped in chemical baths designed to imitate age before the house has even survived a single winter. Synthetic driftwood colors sprayed onto cedar still sharp from the mill. Entire mansions built last Tuesday already pretending to be historic.

But weather has a way of exposing fraud.

Real Nantucket gray is earned.

It begins with cedar the color of fresh-cut honey, warm and bright beneath the summer sun. Then the Atlantic starts negotiating with it. Fog settles into the grain. Salt dries white against the surface. August humidity swells the wood. January wind tightens it again. Little by little, season after season, the shingles surrender their original identity and become something quieter, softer, and infinitely more beautiful.

The transformation takes years. Modern people hate that part.

Everything now is about acceleration: instant results, immediate refinement. Cosmetic perfection achieved overnight through filters, veneers, injections, overlays, resurfacing, and branding. We live in a world obsessed with looking untouched by time.

Which is ironic, because the most beautiful things on Nantucket are almost always the ones time has touched the hardest.

The old whaling captain’s houses leaning slightly into the wind. The worn

granite steps hollowed by two centuries of boots. The fishing boats with cracked paint and rebuilt engines that somehow still start every morning. The carpenter’s hands permanently stained with oil, paint, and saltwater.

Nothing pristine ever really feels believable out here. The island itself won’t allow it. Sooner or later, the ocean puts its fingerprints on everything.

There is a particular kind of beauty that only arrives after survival. The Japanese call it wabi-sabi. Out here, the old-timers simply call it getting older.

You see it most clearly in the faces of year-round islanders. Especially the ones who stayed. The people who remain on Nantucket through enough winters begin to resemble the island itself. Their edges soften. Their eyes narrow permanently from decades of staring into wind. Their skin carries the texture of weather. They become less polished but somehow more substantial.

The mainland has a habit of mistaking smoothness for beauty.

Nantucket knows better.

A twenty-five-year-old shingle with deep grain splits, salt bleaching, and softened edges feels honest in a way brand-new cedar never can. It has history embedded into its surface. Every storm left a mark. Every winter altered it slightly. The imperfections become proof that the thing survived.

People work the same way.

Some of the best men I have ever known looked terrible on paper.

Sunburned.

Divorced.

Missing teeth.

Smelled faintly of diesel fuel and black coffee.

Couldn’t sit still indoors for more than fifteen minutes.

But if your truck slid into a snowbank at midnight in February, they would appear without being asked. If your roof started peeling apart in a nor’easter, they would climb onto it in sleet without discussing liability waivers or hourly billing structures. If your life quietly collapsed, they would hand you a beer, insult

Mid-June is the perfect time to see one of Massachusetts’ rare plants on Nantucket. Like a Jack-in-the-Box popping up and then disappearing again, this rare beauty flowers from the end of May through June and is almost invisible to the naked eye the rest of the year.

Sandplain blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium fuscatum) is not a grass at all but a member of the iris family. They are like miniature versions of the common blue iris (Iris versicolor, aka blue flag iris). It also doesn’t have blue eyes…they are yellow! And just like their larger purple cousins blooming around the island, our sandplain blue-eyed grass plants are show-stoppers right now.

Blue-eyed grass gets its name from the habitat it so loves—our sandplain grasslands and coastal heathlands, a globally rare collection of grasses, wildflowers (forbs), and low shrubs that love our nutrient-poor, sandy soils and dry conditions. You’ll find blue-eyed grass by looking down; the plant is only about 5 to 8 inches tall. Deep, green foliage forms small, dense tufts giving the plant an overall bunchgrass look. But it’s really the flowers you’ll spot first. The bright, violet-blue flowers are small (0.3-0.4 in) and often numerous, from 3 to 12 per plant. One flower alone is to be admired, but a field of tiny purple irises is a meditation on beauty.

Tournament Madness

World Cup madness. Wow, my entire X feed is full of it. And it’s been pretty darn fun to follow, for reasons that have not a lot to do with the actual game of soccer (or football, as much of the world calls it).

Hosting the World Cup means that our great country has seen a recent influx of visitors from a wide range of foreign lands. And those visitors are having a blast! The first of them to catch my attention was Freddy (X handle @alnassrfc), a young man from Germany. Freddy started his American adventure in Atlanta on June 6. He and his traveling companion rented a car and drove through Tennessee to get to Auburn, Alabama for their first World Cup match. Freddy enthusiastically posted about their experiences at Wendy’s, Walmart, Buffalo Wild Wings, Bass Pro Shop and that wonderful strange gas station/alternate universe known as Buc-ee’s. The crew discovered the music of American country artist Ella Langley. Freddy posted about her. The next day, Freddy received a shoutout on a country radio station as the station played one of Ms. Langley’s songs. Yeah, Freddy is having a time!

Freddy isn’t the only one. There were a bunch of crazy Scots who had a bagpiper honking on his pipes in front of their rental house in Rhode Island. That must have gone over well with the neighbors. The Scottish fans, known as the Tartan Army, took over Fenway Park and had everyone singing along to Abba’s song Dancing Queen. Every other post in my feed was a new, joyous celebration from a foreign World Cup fan who was amazed at the American way of life. I loved it and the algorithm knew that I did. Win-win!

I think that, in some small ways, the overall Nantucket experience must be like that for our summer guests. Everyone gets to see a little piece of the puzzle. They compare that puzzle piece to their preconceived notions. Does it match? Sometimes yes, often no. And that’s the beauty of island life for us residents. We help our guests take a little peek behind the curtain. I know that it’s my favorite part of being a beach fishing guide. I can’t promise fish on every trip, but I know that I can always show my guests a part of the island that they wouldn’t have seen otherwise. I get to share the beauty of Nantucket with them and it’s pretty

magical, I tell ya! Let’s talk about Nantucket fishing for a bit, shall we? The Spring Sea Run Opener tournament is just about to wrap up. It was a particularly slow start this season. Homer Ray IV put the first tournament bass on the beach on May 15. That started the 30-day tournament window. The fish didn’t exactly flood the shoreline for the first couple of weeks. The hard-core beach warriors pecked away at them and the leader board started filling up.

Matt Roberts (hey, that’s Dr. Roberts to you when you’re in the dentist chair!) caught a beauty to lead the tournament going into the final days. His fish measured 39.75 inches long. Matt posted a great video of this magnificent striper being revived and released.

whaling crew. After retiring from whaling, he established a store and an inn. He was a founding trustee of the Nantucket African Baptist Society and the African Meeting House, which served as a church, community center, and school.

Visitors to Nantucket’s Historic Coloured Cemetery often seek the gravesite of Absalom Boston, Nantucket’s pioneer mariner, entrepreneur, and civil rights leader, only to find that neither he nor his wife and partner in abolitionist endeavors, Hannah Cook Boston, have headstones.

To address this and to properly recognize their contributions, the Cemetery Commission has installed a new monument as a lasting tribute to their lives, legacy, and impact on Nantucket's history.

“The absence of a marker for two such important figures has long been noted by visitors and historians,” said Cemetery Commission Vice Chair Frances Karttunen. “This monument ensures that future generations will have a place to reflect on and celebrate the remarkable contributions of Absalom and Hannah Boston.”

A full-day Juneteenth celebration will follow on Saturday, June 20, from 10 am to 3 pm at the African Meeting House on York Street, featuring educational programs and celebrations of African American history and culture.

The African Meeting House is situated in the Five Corners neighborhood, part of the historic district once known as New Guinea where African Americans lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Built

during the late 1820s, the small post-and-beam building, now a National Historic Landmark, served simultaneously as a church, a school for African American children, and a community gathering place. The African Meeting House closed in 1911, but was restored and reopened as a museum approximately eight decades later. It is the only public building constructed and occupied by African Americans in the 19th century still standing on Nantucket. Today it is owned and operated by the Museum of African American History (MAAH) and anchors the Black Heritage Trail on Nantucket, a tenstop walking trail divided into Downtown and New Guinea segments that traces the vibrant African American community life of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Saturday’s Juneteenth celebration and block party begins at 10 am. purple to dark purple. But each has a tell-tale contrasting yellow center: a wink among the grasslands. In my experience, when you find one, there are typically more nearby. When sandplain blue-eyed grass is fruiting, you’ll see the stems turn darker in color and small brown to black fruits hanging where the flowers once were.

Sisyrinchium is a large genus of annual to perennial flowering plants in the family Iridaceae (Irises). There are several species in the eastern United States and three on Nantucket, though none as abundant as S. fuscatum. Sandplain blue-eyed grass is the only member of the genus with dense, fibrous tufts at the base of the plant. To find them, close examination of the leaf base may be necessary. Unlike other species of this genus in Massachusetts, this species is specific to open, dry, sandy coastal habitats—perfect for Nantucket.

On nature walks out at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, people are often surprised to learn that one of the seemingly common plants at their feet is protected by the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act (MESA). Not only is S. fuscatum on the MESA list as a species of special concern, the Mass State Wildlife Action Plan (2025) lists this species as one of greatest conservation need.

Despite being a state-listed “Species of Special Concern,” it is abundant on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. It thrives in our open, sandy grasslands, and disturbed heathlands. While it’s an embarrassment of riches here on-island, it’s rare elsewhere,

and extirpation throughout most of its historic range means it still deserves our protection. Think of the island as refugia; this is the last place for it to grow and proliferate the way it once did in other places. Here we likely have a strong genetic stock with many individuals in each population. Nantucket can also provide seeds to other locations for reintroduction, seed banking, and research studies, all monitored by the state, of course.

As is the case for so many of us, for this special flower Nantucket is a refuge.

Once found throughout the Atlantic coastal plain (Florida to Massachusetts), sandplain blue-eyed grass has been extirpated from parts of the historic range. Remaining populations are small and disjunct. It previously occurred in Michigan where it is now presumed eradicated. It is also possibly extirpated in Pennsylvania and Rhode Island. It is imperiled in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Virginia and critically imperiled in New York and Nova Scotia.

So why are they so rare in the first place? Threats to this species include habitat loss due to development and exclusion of fire or other disturbance, which can lead to competition from invasive and aggressive native species (e.g., black huckleberry, scrub oak). Natural succession without disturbance leads to an increase in woody (shrub and tree) cover, which will ultimately shade out the small blue-eyed grasses. However, they remain dormant in the seed bank, waiting for some new disturbance to let in the sunshine, stirring them into aboveground life again.

paths and dirt roads. At LLNF, we have been documenting the increase of S. fuscatum post-management since 2018. In several locations throughout our 275 acres, we have been managing to reduce woody cover, especially from non-native trees. We have found that in removing the trees mechanically we disturb the soil and open up the tree canopy, which allows long-dormant seeds in the soil to emerge. We have seen an increase in sandplain blue-eyed grass plants in several areas. They had been in the seed bank all along, just waiting for the right conditions to emerge.

sertation or other detailed research. And Nantucket is just the place to do that given our huge populations. At LLNF alone we have many thousands of individuals.

If you’re already on Nantucket, you are in a prime spot to see this plant. During its peak season, you can easily spot sandplain blue-eyed grass growing wild in open areas, along trail edges, and in mowed sections of local ecosystems like the Head of the Plains, parts of the Middle Moors, Linda Loring Nature Foundation, and Smooth Hummocks, among others. You actually may have it in your yard if you have some wild landscape or a deer trail.

Remember to start your search in the afternoon. Sandplain blue-eyed grass is not an early riser. The flowers open during the day (generally after noon) and close at night (a great excuse to sleep in).

This time of year, in addition to the flowers themselves, you may see bright, multi-colored survey flags in some of your favorite grassland habitat. Congratulations, you’ve just discovered research in action. Seasonal staff from our conservation organizations identify, mark (with flags), and GPS plant locations while they are in flower for easy identification. Information is also recorded on the surrounding habitat, soil, and any impacts to the plants. These data are useful for the state to know where sandplain blue-eyed grass is growing and thriving in Massachusetts, and this information contributes to future management plans for the species. If you spot a field full of flags, you likely have come upon a surveyed area that still needs to be GPSed. Please leave the flags alone and admire the plants without picking or otherwise disturbing. These plants love disturbance, but not while they are in flower or setting seed.

Despite its rarity elsewhere and abundance on-island, there is little research on this particular species. S. fuscatum is surveyed and monitored and used as an indicator of biodiversity and habitat health. But we know little about its population biology. It is ripe for some graduate student dis-

you once for dramatic effect, and then help you rebuild it board by board.

That kind of character rarely develops in comfort.

Saltwater teaches hard lessons slowly.

So does heartbreak.

So does manual labor.

So does aging.

So does grief.

There’s a reason old fishing towns produce a particular kind of person. Living beside the Atlantic makes it impossible to fully believe in permanence. The ocean removes that illusion from people early. Sandbars move. Storms rearrange entire beaches overnight. Boats sink. Relationships drift apart. Buildings settle. Paint peels. Wood cracks. Beautiful summers vanish into brutal winters with almost insulting speed.

Eventually you stop fighting the idea that everything changes.

And strangely enough, life becomes more beautiful after that.

I think this is why so many people arrive on Nantucket chasing perfection and eventually fall in love with its imperfections instead. The fog. The rust. The warped shingles. The grayness of winter. The old men arguing at the harbor fuel dock. The coffee shops full of exhausted workers in muddy boots at six in the morning while millionaires sleep behind blackout curtains a mile away.

The island is most itself when it stops trying to impress people.

People are like that too.

Somewhere along the line, most adults become exhausted from maintaining the polished versions of

themselves they invented in their twenties. The performance gets heavy. The pretending becomes difficult to sustain. Eventually life weathers everybody into something more honest.

The lucky ones allow it to happen.

The unlucky ones spend fortunes resisting it.

You can always tell which is which.

One person ages like cedar shingles. The other ages like plastic left in the sun. And maybe that’s the real difference.

Aging gracefully is not about preserving youth. It’s about absorbing life without losing structural integrity. The old cedar cottages on Nantucket are beautiful precisely because they adapted to the climate instead of fighting it. They move with humidity. They settle with time. They accept the Atlantic rather than attempting to dominate it.

A shingle that refuses to move eventually snaps.

People do too.

The older I get, the less interested I become in flawless things. Perfect houses make me nervous. Perfect people make me trust them less. There is something sterile about surfaces untouched by difficulty. Real life leaves evidence behind: scars, wrinkles, repairs, stories.

The perfect gray only arrives after exposure.

After enough winters.

After enough storms.

After enough years standing directly in the weather.

That’s true for cedar...that’s true for islands...that’s true for people.

And by the time the shingles finally reach that deep, soft Nantucket gray, they no longer look separate from the landscape around them. They look like they belong there completely. As though the fog, the salt air, and the wind slowly shaped them into their final form over decades of quiet collaboration.

Maybe that’s what maturity really is: not becoming flawless, just becoming fully believable.

Summer Drama & Art for Nantucket Youth

the Dreamland is offering five programs serving children and teens from ages 4 through 18, with programming running from late June through mid-August.

Their offering for the youngest kids is Stage Explorers, a morning camp for ages 4 to 8 that runs Monday through Friday from 9 am to noon, beginning June 29 and continuing through August 14. Each week, participants “travel” to a new country, discover stories from that culture, and then take the stage at a Friday showcase to share what they’ve learned. The 11 am Friday Showcase is open to families and friends of Explorers and includes live performances, arts and crafts, a sing-along, and a tea party on the Dreamland stage, making it a celebration as much as a performance.

For older kids who want a deeper theatrical experience, the Dreamland is mounting a production of Disney and Pixar’s Finding Nemo JR. This three-week camp for ages 8 to 18 runs July 6-24, with performances scheduled from July 25 through August 1. Whether a child thrives in the spotlight or prefers working behind the scenes, the program is designed to give every participant a meaningful role in building a real production from first rehearsal to final bow.

The nationally recognized Missoula Children’s Theatre is back at Dreamland for a one-week residency appearance the week of August 3 to 7. In this intensive program, children ages 8 and older work with visiting teaching artists to put on a production of Peter & Wendy — the classic tale of adventure, belonging, and the belief that you can fly. Performances are scheduled for Friday, August 7 at 5:30 pm and Saturday, August 8 at noon.

Storytime with a Princess offers interactive, joyful fun multiple times throughout the summer. Royal doors open at 11 am for crown crafting and face painting, with a theatre experience that begins at 11:25 am. Sessions will be held on July 11, 18, and 25 and on August 1, 9, and 15. Tickets are $25 ($20 for Dreamland members), with a special “Royal Treatment” package available for $99.

Rounding out the Dreamland’s Kids Summer Stage 2026 season is a one-week musical theatre intensive designed for teens. Participants ages 12 to 18 will work one-on-one with directors during the week of August 10-14 to find their voices,

develop performance skills, and prepare solo numbers for the 16 Bars Showcase on August 14 at 5:30 pm.

Registration for Dreamland 2026 Kids Summer Stage programs is available at nantucketdreamland.org/education/2026-kids-summer-stage Out at Seaview Farm Arts Center on 23 Wauwinet Road, the Nantucket Island School of Design & the Arts takes a different but equally vibrant approach to summer enrichment for youths. NISDA’s young artists programs are rooted in multicultural exploration, nature study, and hands-on studio arts using Nantucket’s landscape and community as classroom and inspiration. Registration is open, and the Nantucket Golf Club Foundation offers scholarships for yearround island students ages 5–19.

The NISDA classes and workshops include Kinder Artists, Clay Workshops, Let’s Paint!, Youth Clay, Drawing in Nature, Mask Making, Decorative Stitching and Embellishment, and Stone Soup: Maskmaking and Storytelling.

Friday mornings through July and into August, NISDA hosts Generations Together, a multigenerational art-making workshop open to everyone. Sessions run on July 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31, and August 7, 14, and 21. This is NISDA’s version of celebrating creativity while having old-fashioned fun: no age limits, no prerequisites, just shared time making things together.

For families looking for something more customized, NISDA also offers Art Workshop Parties at their Dairy Barn Studios & Meadow, as well as private tutorial instruction, both available upon request.

Ray and I have left to do the Chuck Wagon Derby with the scouts and have been knocked out of first place in the final three days!” Matt, Homer, and Tim Sullivan are teammates in the tournament, competing under the team name of “Terrible Husbands and Timmy.” They are currently holding in first place.

Matt has a blast fishing this tournament. “Yes, I love this tournament. It’s all for charity and has a real collegial feel to it even between teams.

As you know, the Inshore (the Inshore Classic, the big fall Nantucket fishing tournament) can get pretty competitive and snippy. It’s also the only three-man tournament and I love that aspect! It makes you push your teammates to come out and fish because everyone’s fish counts.”

The year’s first bluefish was caught on May 26 by 15-year-old Sawyer Holland. Sawyer has been crushing it on the beach, catching bass with his fly rod like a seasoned pro. And wow, his bluefish was a monster! If beach fishing held an NFL-style draft, Sawyer would be a first-round pick.

Rafael Osona, tournament organizer, said this about Sawyer and his impres-

sive catch: “A historic day for the tournament! The prize for first tournament bluefish (and first reported bluefish on Nantucket of 2026) has been landed by the youngest tournament participant to date (15). Congrats @sawyerholland6 on this great catch, and what a gator at that.”

One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s Sea Run Opener tournament has been in the junior division. To date, Sawyer Holland, Homer Ray V, and Thomas Raudonius have all submitted stripers that they’ve caught.

Homer Ray IV told me about his son’s exciting catch: “It was a dark night. The moon had not come up yet. I was fishing on the end and we were spaced out about ten yards apart. I had a hit on my five-inch candy-colored Mag Darter. Had the boys change lures. Less than five minutes later I heard Homer say ‘Oh yeah!’ I could hear the drag ripping off of his reel. After a few minutes he had it landed. He was full of excitement, grinning ear-to-ear, with a small happy dance to follow!”

How cool is that: some insight into the world of nighttime striped bass fishing! Homer sent me some pictures of his boys with the fish that young Homer had landed (cover photo). It was within the legal limits for keeping, and the boys were excited that they were bringing home dinner. “Young Homer made Harrison (his younger brother) carry the fish for him. We ate half, and he wanted to give half to my brother and his family. He got the first keeper bass for the junior division at the Angler’s Club!”

Nantucket beach fishing is always a great adventure. Now the proper way for this story to end would be for one of our new World Cup visitors to hit me up so that I can take them out on a fishing adventure. I certainly couldn’t compete with the adventures that Freddy is having. Ella Langley has invited him to come to her next concert and hang out backstage. NFL football star JJ Watt put the boys up in a five-star hotel in Houston. And word has it that Freddy might be receiving an invitation to tour the White House. But perhaps Shaun from Scotland (@Shaunvlog_), Nobunaga from Japan (@Japan_Nobunaga) or Skylar Skye from England (@SkylarSkye3) would love a tour of Great Point with a side of surfcasting. If so, hit me up! And thanks to all of you for helping to remind this American about how amazing our great country is.

NANTUCKET ISLAND

Nantucket Island is just about 14 miles by 3-1/2 miles, and there are miles of bike paths to nearly every area. This means that riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to get around our island. NANTUCKET ISLAND BEACHES

NORTH SHORE AND HARBOR BEACHES

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: This fresh water pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
