Artist David Hostetler would have turned 100 this December. He isn’t here to celebrate, but his wife, Susan Hostetler, is making sure the milestone is marked by sharing his work and honoring his dedication to helping people see that every aspect of life is art. In the Hostetler Gallery on Centre Street, Susan is presenting David Hostetler: Forest & Form. “He was an American artist doing an American art form,” Susan explained. “This year is a way to showcase his diverse body of work.” She’s hosting special talks with wine tastings every week, showing sculptures never before on display from a private collection, and screening The Last Dance, the biopic that won four Emmy Awards. David once said with his characteristic wit: “I was born in 1926 in Beach City, where there was no beach, and there was no city, and there certainly wasn’t any art. The only art I knew in my life was a guy named Art up on Main Street: I think he was a plumber.” He was an only child of a high school principal and a stay-at-home mom. “There was no enlightenment in that environment,” Susan explained. “He was a quirky, clever kid... an only child who was an astute student of his environment...drawn to the beauty of the land.” David’s grandfather was an Amish farmer, and his influence on his grandson went beyond agriculture. For a time, young David actually considered becoming a farmer himself. “But his buddies said stick to what you know...the art,” said Susan. He never forgot the lesson his grandfather’s world had taught him, though: an appreciation for purity, for humble simplicity, for a way of life stripped down to its essentials. Decades later those instincts would define his sculpture. According to his biography David L. Hostetler The Carver (c.1992 by Ohio University College of Fine Arts), he first became interested in art at age 18 while recovering in hospital from a serious shrapnel wound received while training for a stint in the US Army. “Those were the first drawings I ever did, the first art of any

“We’re putting the band back together.” Those immortal words were put forth by Joliet Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd) in the classic 1980 movie The Blues Brothers. Who doesn’t love a classic buddy movie filled with laughs and great music? Yeah, I’m all in! I recently found myself in the middle of a Nantucket version of this plot. And it was so great! Rick Kalman and Scott Herzog, a couple of Nantucket kids, decided that it was time to put the band back together after 60 years. They had played together in a bunch of different bands during the late 1960s. Was that the golden age of rock n’ roll? I truly believe it was. And now these two old bandmates were reuniting for a night of music and memories. Was it a mission from God? I suspect that there was some divine inspiration going on, indeed. Music started as an outlet for Rick and Scott. It developed into a life-long passion. Rick laughed as he told me, “Our band name for this show is ‘Some Wicked Rusty’. Yeah, that pretty much says it all!” I spent some time with Rick, Scott, and drummer David Ernst (“My best friend!” – Scott) recently at their rehearsal. Ok, maybe there was a little bit of rust on the gears. But that engine still purrs, hinting at a roar. Scott’s guitar playing simply fits the material: light and fun at times, sharp and punchy when needed. Rick’s vocals smile perfectly at the joy of the 60s era hits that they grew up to and still love. And David provided a solid drive. These guys still have it going on. “Listening to the radio when every day there was a new great hit song out. Seeing the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show.” Scott Herzog told me that these things were the catalysts for his musical adventures. “Growing up on the island, there were three things to do: sports (which we didn’t), wandering the island, or ordering instruments from the Sears and Blue Book catalogues and learning to play.” Rick Kalman agreed. “I couldn’t play sports. by Shawn Roberts I have worked inside some extraordinarily expensive homes. Homes with wine cellars larger than my first apartment. Homes with hidden doors, imported marble shipped across oceans, and refrigerators sophisticated enough to probably qualify for voting rights in certain states. I’ve stood in kitchens worth more than entire neighborhoods I’ve lived in while in college in Arizona. And every once in a while, usually late in the day when the owners loosen up a little, somebody asks the question. “So what do you think?” What they’re really asking is whether I’m impressed. Sometimes I am. Beautiful craftsmanship is beautiful craftsmanship. A hand-cut dovetail joint still deserves admiration whether it’s inside a billionaire’s library or an old fishing shack. Skill is skill. Vision is vision. There’s nothing noble about pretending otherwise. But wealth gets harder to define the longer you work with your hands. Because eventually you start noticing something strange. The happiest people are almost never the ones trying hardest to look rich. Real wealth has a completely different feeling to it. You notice it in the old couple drinking coffee barefoot on a weathered porch they paid off thirty years ago. In the fisherman whose truck frame is rusting out from putting in at Children’s Beach for the past decade, but whose children genuinely enjoy being around him. In the carpenter who owns three good tools instead of thirty shiny useless ones. In the woman who somehow knows every single person at the grocery store and still has time to ask how their mother is. There are people on Nantucket worth fifty million dollars who seem spiritually exhausted. And there are tradesmen and landscapers with sawdust and sand on the floorboards of their trucks who stand together at Fisherman’s Beach and laugh like kings. That contradiction fascinated me long before I had words for it. Growing up around extreme wealth gives you a strange perspective on human nature. You learn very early that money amplifies people more than it changes them. Generous people become more generous. Insecure people become impossible. Calm people grow more comfortable. Narcissists simply purchase larger stages for themselves. Money solves many problems: anybody pretending otherwise is either lying or has never struggled financially. A warm house in February matters. Health insurance matters. Being able to buy groceries without anxiety matters. But beyond a certain point, wealth becomes psychological rather than material. And psychology is where things get interesting. Some people own beautiful homes. Other people are owned by them. You can feel the difference immediately. There are houses so immaculate they almost feel medically sterilized. Nobody sits in the living room. The kitchen looks untouched by hunger. Perfect white couches stare out toward the harbor like museum installations. Everything is expensive, yet nothing appears fully alive. Then there are homes where the floors creak, dogs wander through sandy kitchens, coffee mugs collect near the sink, and the porch furniture never quite matches. Somehow those places feel infinitely wealthier. Not because they cost more—because people actually live there. A carpenter notices these things. You start understanding that ownership and stewardship are completely different concepts. Some people buy houses as trophies. Others care for them like living organisms. The first group worries about resale value. The second group worries about whether the place still feels warm during a storm. Only one of those people understands the home. The island teaches this lesson constantly. Nantucket itself is a strange collision between enormous privilege and brutal reality. Billionaires may arrive on private jets, but eventually everybody still ends up standing in line at the Steamship when the weather turns bad. The continued on page 22

Director of Research & Conservation at the Linda Loring Nature Foundation Years ago, my husband and I eloped at a Nantucket conservation property. When we got to the location, we couldn’t decide exactly which spot to say our “I Do’s.” As we weighed the pros and cons of beach versus grassland, a female Northern Harrier flew low overhead. She landed on a post by one of the beach entrances and projectile pooped into the path. “That looks like the way,” I said to my betrothed. Seventeen years later the harrier blessing is still strong. The Northern Harrier is a ground-nesting raptor of open marshes and grasslands, easily recognized by its low, gliding flight and white rump patch. They are Accipiter Hawks in the same family as eagles, vultures, and kites. However, their flat faces make them look more like an owl than any of their closest relatives. Their facial disks allow them to hunt by sound as well as by sight much like an owl— a good feature when hunting in the fog of the gray lady. Female Harriers are light brown above and buffy below. The undersides are heavily streaked with dark brown. Females are also about 20 percent larger than the males. Adult males are smaller and gray with black wingtips. This helps give it the nickname “grey ghost,” a perfect moniker for a foggy day in the moors. The juveniles, which are likely out and about now, are mostly dark brown above and cinnamon colored below. Having just fledged, they may also appear a little clumsy on the wing. All three age classes have the distinctive white rump patch easily distinguishable from other birds of prey in our area. Harriers hunt almost exclusively on the wing for small mammals like meadow voles, white-footed mice, and even other small birds and sometimes snakes. They’ll also take the occasional rabbit. Unlike other hawks, Harriers have historically been favored by farmers because they eat agricultural pests that can damage crops without going for chickens. You might see them in flight and hunting—a common sight in the moorlands and grasslands around Nantucket. In flight, Northern Harriers are distinctive; continued on page 21

sort...And I really dug it, really got turned on,” he’s quoted as saying. When he got to college, the world of art opened to David. “He couldn’t get enough of it,” Susan said with fondness. It was painting at first, then ceramics— functional pottery: the practical, everyday objects of a working potter. “But he was hungry for everything.” He went on to earn his degree from Indiana University in 1948 and a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1949: the beginning of a relationship with that university that would define nearly four decades of his life. During his many years as a professor and a mentor at Ohio University, David was always encouraging his students, always seeking something new, and finding art in all aspects of life. In the 1970s, he started Art Park with two other professors on 40 acres in Athens, Ohio: envisioned as a place where students and artists could work in nature and have gatherings with art and music. Hostetler retired from teaching in 1985, earning the title of Professor Emeritus. He was, by every account, disciplined and relentlessly driven: teaching by day, then heading straight out to the studio to carve. “Sleep,” Susan said, “was never a big deal to him. He was Mr. Scholar at all times: gregarious, humble, endlessly curious, always chasing something new, and always pushing his students to chase it with him.” According to Susan, his most prized award was Professor of the Year, “because it was about his teaching...he really wanted to help students see that every aspect of life is art...I still hear from his students. I just met a woman over text who was David’s TA, and she wanted to bring her daughter and granddaughter to the studio to see his art.” Long before he was well-known as a sculptor, David loved music. He played drums in his high school band, then in a jazz band, and he kept it up through college. In the 1990s, he turned back to the drums, becoming a fixture of the Athens jazz scene. In 1999, he built his own intimate venue in his Coolville Ridge studio — Club Dave started as a jam session spot for friends who love the music and became a cultural hotspot. David knew that he’d never become a famous jazz musician. But art was different. He knew he could make a name for himself with his art. Music and art were

both his passions, but Susan said “his most joyful state was carving.” During his early years of teaching, Hostetler also owned and operated a ceramics studio. By the late 1940s, his pottery was evolving into something more sculptural. Around the same time, he picked up a side job helping an antique dealer restore furniture—it was there, sanding and repairing old wood, that he fell in love with the material that would define his career. Hostetler worked in native hardwoods—elm, cherry, walnut, white oak, maple, catalpa—and later in exotic species like purpleheart, ziricote, lacewood, and tamarind. Wood, he believed, wasn’t just a passive material: it had a say in the outcome. In the Emmy-award winning documentary The Last Dance, he explains “The tree has its own idea of where it’s gonna go. And so it will be partially me and partially the tree talking to each other throughout this process of carving.” As Susan puts it: “the wood sometimes dictated the sculpture.” His process itself was almost primitive: a log on a bench, a mallet, a gouge, and hours of patient work, one stroke at a time. “Carving is a very simple act,” Susan says. “David’s sculpture is complicated in its simplicity.” His full-figure sculpture Blue Bathing Suit, carved in the 1960s, marked the real beginning of the body of work he’d for which he would become known and his dedication to his primary subject: women. His earliest carvings nodded openly to his Amish upbringing and to American folk art: by the second half of the 1960s, his forms had grown more stylized, more distilled. In an artist statement, David explained: “My sculpture is woman with the mark of the present and the past cultures on her. Timeless woman as an object, a goddess, angular, sensual, stylized; but always filled with grace and vitality that is woman. Woman to me is the ideal form, erotic yet pure, compositionally variable, yet identical every time... “...Among all goddesses, Asherah is my inspiration, for it is she who was carved from living trees as well as the image of the tree of life. This goddess is the embodiment of my passion for wood and all that is woman. “I want to resurrect the Goddess Asherah and the goddess within all of us

(Rick’s three brothers who were tremendous Nantucket athletes) in sports, but the band filled that hole. It was an identity thing.” Scott had the itch first. He rounded up his buddies Frank Lindley and Tommy Devine and the three started jamming. “Scott started his band when he was 13. I came in a year later.” Rick clearly loved to reminisce about his musical beginnings. “Tommy Devine was our bass player and singer. He had a presence. I was the nervous guy playing rhythm guitar. I remember Frank Lindley had this beautiful green Gretch guitar. The problem was that he couldn’t play as well as Scott and the others. So Frank just disappeared for three or four months. When he came back, he was a keyboard player. He played piano and the Hammond organ. Frank showed up and played the opening keyboard riff for Light My Fire by the Doors, my favorite song. Right then, we moved up a notch!” Scott laughed as he reminisced: “Our first band was called ‘Thee End.’ We were 13 years old. Rick came in later on. I remember that Tommy Devine loved Mark Lindsay, the singer for Paul Revere and the Raiders. Tommy painted on a little mustache with mascara to look like him. Thirteen years old!” “We changed our name to “The Rhythm Method” after that. Of course, we didn’t get the connotation. The adults laughed. Finally, we became Saint George, named after Neil Garrabrandt’s grandfather. Neil also played with us for a while.” Rick told me that the kids performed anywhere they could. “We played at Bennett Hall, the Navy Base, the ‘Sconset Casino, the American Legion, the Cyrus Pierce School, Nantucket High School, the basement of St. Paul’s Church and a bunch of private parties. We practiced in my dad’s shop on Orange Street. Set our gear up on the planks that my dad had cut for the next day’s job.” Getting the band back together was easier said than done. A wide range of local kids drifted in and out of the various incarnations of Saint George. Rick said, “When Tommy went off to school, we had Neil Stanley come in to play bass. He was a great guy. Tommy Terry became our drummer. He showed up at a rehearsal and played the drum opening to the beach rock song Wipeout. What a great drumcontinued on page 18

I sure hope that we can get him back and do this again.” Scott echoed that desire, adding that Frank Lindley is living in California. Scott hoped that Frank could be coaxed back to Nantucket for a future reunion. Tommy Devine had passed away some years ago. It was clear that both Rick and Scott loved their friend and former bandmate dearly. Scott and Rick needed to bring in some help to get Some Wicked Rusty on the racetrack. They added Joel Finn to play bass. Joel is a fantastic player with the best temperament ever—very good choice! Rick’s wife, LeeAnn PapaleKalman, added her amazing vocals. LeeAnn and Joel have played together for years in a variety of bands, most notably Ecliff and the Swing Dogs. And finally, Ethan Devine, Tommy Devine’s son, jumped in to sing and play on a couple of Sam Cooke songs. I could see how much that meant to Rick and Scott. More than once, I heard Rick saying, “Wow, he reminds me so much of Tommy.” I think that these two Nantucket kids truly were on a mission from God. The Fairgrounds was packed with enthusiastic music lovers and friends. The rust was gone. Rick, Scott, LeeAnn, Joel, and Dave took us all on a wonderful trip back in time. The highlight of the night was hearing Scott and Rick talk about Tommy Devine, along with Ethan joining in to stand in his dad’s shoes. A close second was Rick’s story about how he and his bandmates were pulled off of the stage at a middle school dance when they were 14 for drinking from a couple of bottles of champagne that they had stumbled upon. “Squeaky Gibbs, the cop, marched us right out of Bennett Hall and down to the police station. We were never so popular!” Yes, they got the band back together. And it was wonderful. Here’s hoping they do it again real soon.

His American Woman Series from the 1960s earned him national prominence for his graceful, flowing wood sculptures with their simplified forms such as Yellow Dress (1965). He initiated this series using indigenous hardwoods, then progressed from folk images to stylized symbols in exotic woods. These pieces from this specific time in David’s ouvre are very distinct in comparison to his later pieces, which exude modernity in all their sleek, slender forms, like Sensuous Woman. “Any artist who sees the female figure: sees it is complicated. David was trying to distill the forms to get to the essence of feminity,” Susan added. “His female form evolved: ‘how do I simply, simplify, yet still show the female form.’ Some are powerful; some are soft and gentle. Most of his work exudes strength and confidence and a quiet spiritualism.” David first came to Nantucket in 1970, following a woman. They married on continued on page 20

Nantucket, but after a few years that relationship ended. “It was love at first sight. He fell out of love with the girl and fell in love with the island,” said Susan. David showed his work in the Lobster Trap Gallery, with dealer Reggie Levine, and at Peterson Gallery, before operating a shared gallery with Tom Mielko. In 1983, David opened his own gallery on-island, which has operated seasonally ever since. In 1985, he was introduced to Susan, and they spent thirty years together. Susan came from a traditional home, and remembers deciding almost instantly that she wanted to marry him. But it took David some time before he stepped into another marriage. “It wasn’t until wife number three that I really focused on my lover,” he explained in The Last Dance. “She became my model; she became a very specific point in my life, in my studio because she was in love with art” A favorite memory of Susan’s is of the two of them sitting at the dinner table: “he would enlighten me about art... he was always curious and always teaching: I carry that with me still...He was very gregarious but humble and curious. He made a mark on so many people: he was always the professor seeking something new.” One of Hostetler’s most recognized work of art is The Duo, his stunning sculpture in bronze of two intertwined figures that stands in New York City next to Trump Tower, selected by renowned architect Philip Johnson and commissioned by Donald Trump. “That is us,” Susan explained. David loved Nantucket: surfcasting at Nobadeer, clamming, scalloping, long conversations with fellow

artist Kerry Hallam. He bought land whenever he could, and even carried trees from Ohio to plant on the island. One of his best-known later works, Nantucket Goddess, was carved from an elm that had to come down on the island, “the Coffin Tree.” He was, she says, always on the lookout for a Nantucket tree to carve. Hostetler’s work now sits in more than 25 museums and public collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, a milestone Susan describes as a genuine turning point in his career. Installation of The Duo in Manhattan brought him a wave of national attention. On Nantucket, his work can be found not only in the gallery but throughout the community — at Greydon House, the Nantucket Inn, Nantucket Cottage Hospital, and the Artists Association of Nantucket, and on several private properties. Asked what she hopes people will still be saying about David a hundred years from now, Susan comes back to what made him rare even in his own lifetime: he was a direct woodcarver, a vanishing art using a log, a bench, a mallet, a gouge: “There are so few of them now...He took a log, put it on a bench and carved it by hand one gouge at time,” Susan explained. There was nothing between the artist and his material but time and patience. Out of that process, he carved himself a permanent place in American art. Susan still isn't tired of any of it. “I'm never bored selling his work. I love revisiting it all...I love meeting new people. their long slim bodies and slender tail gliding low over a grassland or marsh holding their wings in a V-shape. They seem to barely flap their wings as they hover over the heathlands looking for a snack. Also known as “marsh hawks,” these birds inhabited Massachusetts in “considerable numbers” in the 1830s, making use of the widespread fields, meadows, and wetlands during the state’s greatest agricultural era. Today in Massachusetts, the Islands are clearly the place to find Harriers. Nantucket, Tuckernuck, Martha’s Vineyard, and the Elizabeth Islands ac-

In fact, no Harrier breeding was confirmed anywhere else in the state during that time. The species is still in recovery today and protected. There is marked recovery to the populations outside the Cape and Islands, but Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard remain stronghold breeding sites for the species. Northern Harriers are listed under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act as a species of Special Concern. Their declining populations are primarily due to loss of open habitats throughout much of their breeding range. Historically Northern Harriers were known as Marsh Hawks, indicating their other habitat preference, also in decline throughout the eastern US. What makes Nantucket such a good place for Northern Harriers? First of all, Nantucket has extensive acreages of sandplain grassland, heathland, and open marsh habitats—perfect for nesting Harriers. These habitats

Atlantic remains the final authority here. Salt air corrodes everything equally. Pipes freeze without caring about your stock portfolio. A northeast gale can humble almost anyone. That keeps certain truths alive. You can always tell the people who understand the island from the ones merely consuming it. The people who understand it move differently. They respect weather. They know the ferry schedule by heart. They wave at Five Corners. They own practical jackets instead of fashionable ones. They don’t panic when plans change because they already understand that coastal life runs on negotiation rather than control. That kind of adaptability is wealth too. So is competence. Modern society wildly underestimates the emotional security that comes from knowing how to do things yourself. A person who can repair his own roof before a storm sleeps differently than one completely dependent on calling someone else. A person who can cook, grow vegetables, navigate by instinct, or remain calm during a power outage possesses a kind of ancient prosperity that never appears on financial statements. Competence reduces fear. And fear, more than poverty, is what seems to imprison most wealthy people I’ve encountered. They fear losing status. They fear aging. They fear discomfort. They fear being irrelevant. They fear stillness. You see it in the architecture sometimes. Entire homes designed around distraction. Home theaters, game rooms, bars, spas, gyms, entertainment wings. Massive houses built almost defensively, as though silence itself might become dangerous if given enough empty space to settle into. Meanwhile, some old carpenter sits on a five-gallon bucket watching a sunset with a beer and feels perfectly content. Who is actually wealthier? The older I get, the more I think freedom may be the purest form of wealth available to human beings. Freedom to sleep deeply. Freedom to speak honestly. Freedom to disappear for an afternoon without needing to prove

productivity. Freedom to sit quietly on a dock without scrolling online. Freedom from constant performance. That last one is becoming rare. Modern life pressures people into branding themselves endlessly. Everybody is curating an identity now. Wealth especially has become theatrical. Entire lives constructed around appearing successful to people whose opinions don’t actually matter. But carpentry strips away performance very quickly. Wood does not care about your social status. A board is either level or it isn’t. A roof either leaks or it doesn’t. A porch either holds weight or falls into the scrub oaks and sand. Physical reality is refreshingly uninterested in ego. Maybe that’s why tradespeople often develop a different relationship with money. After enough years building things with your hands, you start valuing solidity over appearance. You become suspicious of surfaces designed only to impress. You also realize how temporary ownership really is. I have renovated enough historic homes to understand that none of us truly possess these places permanently and found enough coins, newspapers, letters behind fireplaces to know their stories. We borrow them for a while. We repair them. We damage them. We leave fingerprints behind. Then somebody else arrives and repeats the process. The houses outlive almost everybody. So do ships. So do islands. So do certain stories. In the end, I don’t think wealth is measured by square footage, investment accounts, or how expensive your kitchen appliances are. Those things may indicate financial success, but they say almost nothing about whether a life feels meaningful once the noise dies down. A carpenter’s definition of wealth is simpler. Good work. Useful skills. People you trust. A body still capable of labor. A few close friends. Enough time to notice sunsets. Enough humility to keep learning. Enough resilience to survive winter. Enough perspective to know that no amount of money can buy back lost time. And maybe, if you are truly fortunate, a weathered old porch somewhere near the Atlantic where you can sit at the end of the day listening to the wind move through the cedar shingles, feeling rich in all the ways that cannot be photographed.

have been extirpated or highly fragmented in other areas. Another plus for Nantucket is the lack of mammals. Sure, we have rabbits, shrews, rats, and field mice, but aside from our deer herds, there are no large mammals, particularly mammal predators (we will save feral cats for another day). On Nantucket, we have no raccoons, foxes, chipmunks, or even skunks. This lack of mammalian predators is a bonus for ground-nesting birds like Harriers. Northern Harrier nests, despite being on the ground, are highly secretive. I was once conducting vegetation surveys along the south coast of the island. Unbeknownst to me, there was a Northern Harrier nest right in my transact path. I screamed bloody murder when the adult female flew directly up at me just as I was about to step on the nest. She had been covering the hatchlings with her camouflage body until necessary to move. Before I could bolt away, I saw three little wrinkly chicks covered in white fuzz. No bigger than avocados. They must have only been a few days old, nestled in a grassy nest surrounded by black huckleberry shrubs. As I hightailed it out of there, my heart still racing, the mother hen was chiding me with chirps. She threatened with her talons, dive-bombing me, but I had already abandoned my plant surveys for the day. Northern Harriers are year-round residents of Nantucket, a fact that makes me like them even more. We frequently see them cruising for a meal in the dead of winter. Of course, there are some migrants as well which arrived to Nantucket in March. Fortunately for Harriers, they nest early in the season: they start to establish territories in early spring and nest where few (except maybe an intrepid ecologist) dare to tread. After the young have fledged, they may hunt together with their parents through the remainder of the summer, until they disperse on their own or are driven off. Now is a great time to see Harriers around the island with both adults and “teenager” birds trying to figure out flying. To view Harriers on Nantucket, check out any open heathland, grassland, or marsh habitat. Head of the Plains (Nantucket Conservation Foundation), the Linda Loring Nature Foundation property on Eel Point Road, or Smooth Hummocks (Nantucket Land Bank) are all great properties for sightings.

Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk. Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach. Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally. Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf. Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae. South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities. Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Nantucket has some of the most beautiful and pristine beaches in the world. Please respect Nantucket’s fragile environment and the beauty of our island. Clean up your litter, respect private property, and use only designated entry points. In areas where dune reclaimation is taking place, please do not cross the rope or fence barriers protecting the dunes.
BEACH SAFETY •Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.
