Free Family Fun Events This Week

Families on Nantucket have two free and festive community events to look forward to this week, courtesy of the Maria Mitchell Association and the Nantucket Historical Association.

On Friday, July 31, the Maria Mitchell Association (MMA) will celebrate the 208th birthday of its namesake, astronomer Maria Mitchell, with a birthday celebration along Vestal Street from 3 to 5 pm. The lower portion of Vestal Street will be closed to traffic for the occasion, which the MMA has hosted annually.

Not Your Typical Nantucket Influencer

Dear Diary – please don’t tell anyone but I think I’m turning into an influencer. Is that possible at my advanced age? After all, I’m getting transferred onto Medicare in another couple of months. Was there a box on the sign-up form that said Influencer – check yes or no? If there was, I’m sure I hit no. And rightly so. After all, who in their right mind is going to be influenced by someone who recently asked the doctor who was about to do his colonoscopy to keep an eye out for his missing key fob for his truck? See what I’m saying?

But this influencer stuff keeps coming up in my client conversations. “Influencers are all over town for the (fill in the blank... Nantucket Film Festival, Comedy Festival, etc.).” Every young woman from thirteen to thirty has told me something about standing in a line to enter the Dairy Boy store in town. Dairy? Nantucket is fairly bereft of cows, to the best of my knowledge. Turns out that this is a first-year women’s clothing store. The trendiest thing you can possibly do is to have a Dairy Boy store bag to walk around with. Who knew? And all of the marketing came through viral social media posts, kicked off by… influencers.

I’m still fuzzy on this influencer stuff, so I asked the magic thinking device (Grok) to define “influencer” and answer like a teenage girl would if explaining this to her grandpa:

“Okay Grandpa, so like… an influencer is basically this person on the internet —usually on TikTok, YouTube, whatever—who has a bunch of followers and people just listen to them!

“It’s like… remember those old commercials where a famous person holds up a product and smiles? Same idea, except now the person lives online and posts stories every five minutes, and you can comment “slay” under their pictures. Ba-

Clues to the Creatures of the Sea

We’re fortunate on Nantucket that we can “beach it” all year round. As a dog owner, I frequent lots of different beaches in all seasons. But it’s summertime, so many more of us are enjoying the beaches. It’s also a great time to linger at the beach. Long walks at a slow pace has me observing so much more. These beaches of the north shore are some of my favorite. Think Dionis, 40th Pole, Water Tower, and Steps, for example. These are great for lazy beach walks and wonderful beachcombing.

Among the flotsam and jetsam of the beach wrack line, many treasures from the sea await. Searching for sea glass is ever popular. However, recycling and a heightened sense of litter, I find more “sea glass” are actual shards of debris rather than the smooth, cloudy sea glass of my childhood.

Beyond sea glass, the beach is littered with riches from the sea. Some are common, others rare, and most have some origin with a living thing. One thing is definitely true; none of it is boring! Even the most common of scallop shells have different patterns of growth and colors.

Here are some of my favorite beachcombing treasures found on Nantucket and a little bit about their origins.

Slipper shell – The common slipper shell (Crepidula fornicata) is usually found in large numbers on the north shore of Nantucket. About two inches or less in size, they can be gray, white, or pink or a combination. They are usually found stacked on top of each other when they wash ashore. When in a stack, the young on top are male, the bottom is female and the ones in the middle are hermaphrodites. The top males fertilize the slipper shell below and the sexes alternate back and forth to the bottom of the stack.

Sometimes called Portuguese sweet meats, slipper snails have been described as “poor man’s scallops.” To get at the meat, slide your finger underneath the muscle (foot) and pinch pulling towards the wider end to free it from the shell. Rinse it in the sea and you can eat it right on the beach to the delight of your fellow beach-goers.

Mermaid toenails (aka jingle shells) – These are the small, often translucent shells that can be shiny yellow, white, or pale orange. The jingle shell (Anomia simplex) is a common intertidal species found attached to rocks, other mollusks and arthropods. It cannot move once it is attached to a substrate.

These are great for children since they are often found with a small hole and can be easily strung onto an impromptu beach necklace. The holes are actually where the valve of the animal was located, but was left attached to the substrate when the shell came off.

Sand dollars – Instead of being a shell, the sand dollar (Echinarachnius parma) are disc-shaped animals in the sea urchin family that grow to about three inches in our area. Alive, they are brown and covered with velvety hair but when dead, they bleach light gray or white in the sun and harden. They are closely related to sea stars and actually look like a sea star with no arms when alive. These are less common than the other species, but still found throughout Nantucket beaches.

Mermaid’s purses – These rectangular horny “purses” are actually egg cases of the little skate (Raja erinacea), a relative of sharks and rays. They are the most common skate in northern inshore waters, thus, their egg cases are plentiful on the beach. The egg cases are made of keratin, the same substance of which human fingernails are composed. An egg case forms around each individual skate embryo just before the mother deposits the cases on the sea floor. The long, curved projections on each corner of the egg tend to catch on seaweed or other objects, helping to anchor the egg case to the bottom. The horns serve to extract oxygen from the water, and to release waste back into the water. The egg cases are very tough and hard to penetrate, thus deterring predators.

Interestingly enough, initially the egg cases are waterproof because the embryos do not have gills until after three weeks of development. Then small holes open in the tips of the horns, admitting seawater, and the young skate learns to live as an underwater creature. When the time comes for the young skate to escape, the egg case splits open at one end and the youngster emerges.

The Island You Can't Post

The little sign in John Sylvia’s Four Winds Craft Guild accomplished something almost too perfect to make up. It became one of the most photographed things on Nantucket.

A simple message reading “No Influencers” sparked outrage, applause, debate, headlines, and thousands of social media posts. Depending on who you ask, it was either a refreshing defense of a small business or an unnecessary jab at the people who have helped shape modern tourism. The internet did what the internet does. It chose sides.

But standing on this island, watching the conversation unfold, I couldn't shake the feeling that everyone was arguing about the wrong thing. I don’t think the sign is really about influencers. I think it’s about remembering that Nantucket is a community before it’s a destination.

There is a strange thing that happens to beautiful places. Eventually, they stop being seen as places where people live and become places where other people visit. Homes become vacation rentals. Fishing boats become scenery. Quiet streets become backdrops. Before long, an entire town can start to feel less like a community and more like a stage set waiting for the next photograph.

Nantucket has never been immune to that.

I grew up here. I’ve lived all over the country since then. Arizona, California, Wisconsin, Colorado, South Carolina—and this year I found my way back home. Leaving the island taught me something I could never have learned by staying.

What makes Nantucket extraordinary isn’t that it’s beautiful. There are beautiful beaches all over the world.

It isn’t that it has charming cobblestones or weathered gray shingles. There are historic towns everywhere.

What makes Nantucket special is that beneath all of its beauty, it is still a real place where real life happens every day.

Long before the first ferry arrives with beach chairs strapped to car roofs, carpenters are already on jobsites. Landscapers are trimming hedges. Fishermen are heading out before sunrise. Restaurant kitchens are firing up. Teachers are planning for another school year. Electricians, painters, nurses, cashiers, mechanics, artists, ferry crews, volunteers, and neighbors all do the quiet work that allows this little island to function.

Visitors experience the finished product. Locals experience the work that makes it possible. Neither experience is wrong: they’re simply different. The danger comes when we forget the second one exists.

As a photographer, I understand the temptation to chase beautiful moments. I’ve spent plenty of mornings waiting for the right light and plenty of evenings watching the sky catch fire over the harbor. There is nothing wrong with taking photographs. Some of my favorite memories are frozen inside a camera. But photography taught me something social media often forgets.

The best photographs don’t happen because you’re trying to get attention: they happen because you were paying attention. There is a difference.

The Nantucket Island School of Design & the Arts (NISDA) has designated August as Heifer Barn Grand Opening Month to celebrate the launching of their expanded Textile & Painting Studios and Library. The public is invited to visit any time, and will be welcomed to see the Barn on Wednesdays during NISDA Cultural Arts Lectures and Gallery Opening, on Thursday Evenings during NISDA’s Community Fete Night, and during one of NISDA’s Artisans Market Day. The Heifer Barn provides substantial new painting and textile studio space, which is enhanced by a loom donated by Christine Hermansdorfer. The Heifer Barn Studios compliment NISDA’s Long Shed Clay Studio, Dairy Barn Admin and Seminar Space, Community Lecture Room, Classroom Studios, Silo Gallery, reestablished and expanded Classic & Digital Photography Studio with B&W Darkroom, and NISDA’s Meadow Pavillion which is the site of community gatherings and their many Young Artists classes.

Beginning this first week of August and continuing throughout the month, NISDA’s textile offerings include: Memory Pattern Workshop, Textile Design & Direct Techniques creating scarves, floor clothes, or mandelas, taught by Kathy Kelm, former Professor of Textiles at RISD. Also, Betsy Sibley, former faculty at Beloit College will offer Fiber Creativity Embroidery utilizing computer or scanned images. And How to Design the Home and Garden Within Us will be taught by Donna Elle, founder of the Philosophy of Spiritual Design. Additional classes and workshops include The Art of Repair: Visible Mending Embroidery with Mae Blackwell, Mass College of Art, MFA, and Mini Workshops; a Knit-A-Long; off-loom weaving, placemats, nature tapestries, pattern pillows with RISD Textile Majors and NISDA college interns this summer, Seamus Chandler and Avery Reinhold.

The expansion of Textile and Painting Programs and Art Library are made possible by the gifting return of the Heifer Barn by NISDA’s new neighbor, the Land Bank and a CPC Community Preservation Historic Restoration Grant to reestablish the Heifer on its original site next to the second Silo at NISDA’s Seaview Farm. Maria Mitchell was America’s first female astronomer, best known for discovering a comet over Nantucket in October 1847. She went on to become the first female professor at Vassar College, where she championed learning-by-doing and mentored generations of students until her retirement in 1888. She died the following year and is buried in her family’s plot at Nantucket's Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Founded in 1902, the MMA is a private nonprofit dedicated to preserving Mitchell’s legacy as an astronomer, naturalist, librarian, and educator. The organization operates two observatories, a natural science museum, an aquarium, a research center, and Mitchell's historic birthplace, offering science and history programming year-round for all ages.

From 9 am to 12 noon on Wednesday, August 5, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) will host its 3rd Annual Community Day at Children’s Beach built around themes from its 2026 featured exhibition, The Wider World & Scrimshaw

Organized by the New Bedford Whaling Museum with support from Art Bridges, The Wider World & Scrimshaw is a traveling exhibition on view in the Nantucket Whaling Museum through November 1. It brings together more than 300 objects to explore carving traditions from whaling routes across the Pacific world, placing scrimshaw, the folk art whalers created from whale byproducts, alongside carved decorative arts and material culture made by Indigenous communities from Oceania, the Pacific, and the Arctic.

NHA Community Day activities will include demonstrations and hands-on stations exploring maritime culture and handcraft starting at 9 am, plus a participatory song and dance performance by members of the local Mashpee Wampanoag community at 11 am.

The event is free, family-friendly, and open to all. A rain date is set for Thursday, August 6.

I’m not sure I’m cut out for this influencer stuff. It sure sounds like a lot of work. And the cell reception isn’t that reliable on Great Point. Perhaps I’ll just stick with the fishing guide gig for a bit longer.

Speaking of guiding, I had the pleasure of fishing with two really fun groups on a recent Saturday. The morning group consisted of three young men who had attended Denison University together. I knew in advance that they were going to be a great bunch to hang out with. First of all, they had been referred to me by Brian Savage, a man I’d taken out fishing the previous year. Brian Savage was an absolute blast. We had laughed, talked music, and caught some fish in the middle of a fairly terrible Sunday morning. Brian had met Luke Jeans, one of the three young men, on the golf course. Somehow the topic of Nantucket came up. And here we are. Clearly, Brian Savage is an influencer!

And the second reason I knew this was going to be really fun? Luke told me that the three were “…super stoked” to go fishing with me. Perfect answer. Unbridled enthusiasm. Exactly what was needed for the relatively bleak fishing conditions as of late.

I knew my premonition about these three amigos was correct the minute that I greeted them in the Wauwinet gatehouse parking lot. I started in on them from the jump. It felt oddly like running a police shift with a bunch of rookie cops working. Sweet memories!

Luke’s compadres were Doran Yustein and Max Gregory. It was a joy to see how much fun the three of them had over the course of our trip. They were amused at the thought of me having been a police officer in a previous life. They strongly hinted that maybe, just maybe, I could provide them with a get-out-ofjail-free card in the unlikely event that, well, you know. I assured them that if they were to get lugged by Nantucket’s finest over the weekend, mentioning my name would certainly earn them a cell upgrade.

The guys told me that their plans for the afternoon included a trip to the

Cisco Brewery. My influencer instincts kicked in at once. I told them that their new goal was to seek out the August Blues – Nantucket tent and introduce themselves. I must say that I was impressed to receive a picture of the three with Augie Chotkowski – the tournament’s namesake. Well done, guys! If I ever go back to college I promise to pledge Delta Chi, their fraternity.

My afternoon trip was another wonderful group. The Mandel family was ready to go fishing: Mark Mandel (the dad), Jen (the mom), and their two children, Jeremy and Clara. Jeremy will be going into the eighth grade, and Clara is starting fourth grade. Their school is starting up on August 5 in Memphis, Tennessee, so this was the last blast of summer for the Mandel kids. I think we got the most out of the day.

Not Your Typical Nantucket Influencer

One of the greatest things about the fishing guide gig is getting to meet such amazing families as the Mandel crew. Jen, the organizer, was an absolute joy. She’s a professor at the University of Memphis, where she teaches the most advanced classes in the science of plant life. Mark and I hit it right off—he is a retired police officer as well, having served on the Nashville TN police force and then in Athens, GA on the campus of the University of Georgia. Let’s just say that we spoke the same language. Little Clara was a spitfire, much like her wonderful mother. And then there’s Jeremy.

Please give me more kids like Jeremy! He absolutely loves to fish. He likes baseball—he had just finished attending a summer baseball camp—but Jeremy Mandel LOVES to fish! His grandfather, Bruce

Mandel, had told me this when Bruce organized the fishing trip a few weeks earlier. Mark told me that Jeremy checks in with him after school and is then all about getting to the nearest pond or lake.

Jeremy listened well. He took suggestions, made corrections and in the course of an hour was casting like he had been raised on Nantucket. He is smart. Determined. And he was able to handle the ups and downs that come with surf fishing. Jeremy managed to hook three bluefish while Mark and I casted without a single hookup. All three of Jeremy’s fish managed to avoid the beach, due to no fault of Jeremy’s. But Jeremy had managed to hook into the only three blues that I knew of on the entire beach on that Saturday. That young man is going to do just fine in the fishing realm and, more importantly, at life. I hope I influenced Jeremy to get back here next summer and get out with me again. He’s sure got it all!

I am grateful for the amazing people and families that I get to spend time with. But this particular Saturday was a treat. Thanks to Max, Luke, and Doran for making me feel young again for a few hours. Thanks to the Mandel family for sharing their family time with me. Perhaps I’m not an influencer after all. But I sure am blessed.

Clues to the Creatures of the Sea

Whelk shells – On the north or south shores you may find channeled or knobbed whelks (the knobbed, Busycon carica, is the most common on Nantucket). These sea snails resemble small conches but are actually a different species. This snail is carnivorous and will drill holes in other mollusk shells. Sometimes we also find the operculum of the whelk. The operculum is a 1-2 inch oblong structure that looks like a large, amber fingernail. It’s actually like the front door for the snail. When completely retracted inside its shell, the operculum fits into the opening, thus protecting the soft flesh of the snail from predators.

The inside of the whelk shell is smooth like porcelain and often has bright orange coloration. A young child I was walking with on the beach many years ago found just the winding, center portion of the whelk shell. He held it up and exclaimed, “It looks like the twisty legs of a ballerina!” Indeed it does!

Whelk egg case – One of the most common beach finds among the eel grass and sea weed is actually the egg case for the whelk snail. The snake-like structures are difficult to figure out at first. What creature could have made this thing? The long egg case is made up of many chitinous egg cases. Each egg case (or capsule) holes numerous individual baby whelk. The shape of the capsule is specific to the type of whelk species, so you may be able to find more than one type. If the eggs haven’t hatched, you may be able to find some miniscule whelk shells inside that have dried up.

Moon snail shells – The northern moon snail (Lunitia heros) has a pink and gray shell with a light brown body. Like the whelk, it can retract completely and has an operculum to close its door. The empty shells often get used by flat-clawed hermit crabs, giving it an extra life. The females produce a “sand collar” which is a structure covered with sand where the snail lays her eggs. These are sometimes seen by snorkelers among the eel grass beds.

Moon snails are one of my personal favorites. They are more commonly found on the south shore of Nantucket, and I spent many a year looking for a “perfect” shell that wasn’t broken. When I did finally find one at Miacomet, I realized that is actually perfect because it was still alive. Holding the 4 inch snail in the palm of my hand for about 30 seconds, the smooth, cool flesh of the snail started to come out of its shell and covered my hand like a big wet kiss from the sea. I set it back in the sand and let the surf take it away.

Like most things from the beach, please leave what is alive. Only take a treasure or two, but leave the rest for all to enjoy.

Now is the perfect time to peruse the wrack line and enter your finds into iNaturalist. Observations of these creatures (or fragments of creatures) will add to the known biodiversity of the island. The Island You Can’t Post

Some of my favorite moments on Nantucket would never make a viral video.

It’s running into someone you haven’t seen in ten years on Main Street and talking for twenty minutes because nobody is in a hurry.

It’s watching fog quietly erase the harbor until the ferry appears like a ghost.

It’s hearing someone call your parents by their first names because they’ve known each other for decades.

It’s buying a coffee from someone who remembers your order.

It’s seeing kids jump off a dock with the same fearless joy their parents had before them.

These are ordinary moments. They are also the moments that make a place become home. They’re difficult to capture because they aren’t spectacles. They’re relationships.

That’s what I hope every visitor discovers. Not the “hidden gem” that will be posted online tomorrow and crowded by the weekend. Not the perfect angle that everyone else has already photographed—something much better.

I hope they discover that Nantucket still belongs to itself.

Walk somewhere without a destination. Spend an afternoon with your phone in your pocket. Talk to the woman making your sandwich or the man unloading supplies from the ferry. Visit a local gallery not because something is trending, but because someone spent months creating something with their hands. Watch the harbor without worrying whether anyone else knows where you are.

Leave yourself enough room to be surprised. You might find that your favorite memory isn’t the one you planned.

Visitors have always been part of Nantucket’s story. They always will be. This island has welcomed people for generations, and many who first came for a weekend eventually became some of its most devoted caretakers. The issue has never been whether someone lives here year-round or arrives by ferry on Friday afternoon. The issue is how we choose to see the place once we get here.

Do we experience it, or do we simply consume it?

Gone Fishhing!

Do we leave having collected photographs or having made a connection?

That little sign at Four Winds was never really the story. The story is what it revealed. It reminded us that in an age when nearly every beautiful moment feels destined to become content, there are still people quietly protecting the idea that some places deserve to be experienced before they are shared.

Maybe that’s old-fashioned. I hope it is. Because if Nantucket ever becomes nothing more than a collection of viral moments, we’ll lose the very thing that made people fall in love with it in the first place.

The beaches will still be here.

The lighthouses will still stand.

The gray shingles will still weather in the salt air.

But the soul of this island has never lived in its scenery. It has always lived in its people. And that is something no photograph, no matter how beautiful, will ever fully capture.

NANTUCKET ISLAND

Nantucket Island is just about 14 miles by 3-1/2 miles, and there are miles of bike paths to nearly every area. This means that riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to get around our island. NANTUCKET ISLAND BEACHES

NORTH SHORE AND HARBOR BEACHES

40th Pole: Great for families and young children, but no lifeguards. On Nantucket Sound; warm water during July, August, and September inspired nickname “The Bathtub” for area nearby. Parking. Best access via 4WD vehicle.

Dionis: 3 miles from town by bike on the north side of Eel Point Rd. off Madaket Road. Look for the boulder marked “Dionis.” Sheltered by dunes, calm waters for swimming, safe for children; restrooms, & parking. Beachgoers can take NRTA shuttle bus to Eel Point Rd stop & walk.

Steps: Between Dionis and Jetties beaches; access from Cliff Road. No lifeguard, no facilities, very little parking. Gentle surf; sandbar. Many steep steps must be descended to get to the beach.

Jetties: Easy bike ride from town, or take the shuttle bus. Great beach for families. Lifeguards, changing rooms, playground, volleyball nets, restrooms, showers, public phones, restaurant and take-out food service. Concession and restrooms handicap accessible; boardwalk to the beach. Tennis. Windsurfing, sailboat, and kayak rentals. Shuttle service from town to Jetties Beach is available seasonally.

Brant Point: Easy walk or bike ride from town. No lifeguard. Strong current; experienced swimmers; beach drops off suddenly under the water. Scenic beach with Brant Point Lighthouse; nice to sit and watch the boats rounding the point. Here is where to go to wave goodbye to friends and family departing on the Steamship.

Children’s: Harbor Beach, an easy walk from town down So. Beach Street and off Harbor View Way. Flotation devices are not permitted within the guarded area. Ideal for small children; park, playground, and bandstand; lifeguard, restrooms, showers, food service, picnic tables. Food, playground, and rest room are all accessible. Activities sponsored by Park & Recreation Commission are often held at this beach during the summer.

Francis Street: Five-minute walk from Main Street. Calm harbor waters for swimming; no lifeguard. Jungle gym, kayak rentals, bathroom.

SOUTH SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Cisco Beach: Four-mile bike ride to end of Hummock Pond Road. Heavy surf; lifeguard. No facilities. Parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Ladies Beach: To access, turn left at the end of Bartlett Farm Road. No facilities; no lifeguard. Limited parking. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Miacomet Beach: at the end of Miacomet Road. Some parking. Surf and rip currents can be strong on the ocean side. No facilities or food service. This beach is near Miacomet Pond, but the pond is currently closed due to harmful algae.

South Shore Beach: at the end of South Shore Rd. Limited parking; difficult to access beach, 4WD is advisable. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Surfside: Located at the end of Surfside Road, a three-mile ride on paved bike path or take the shuttles. Easy to park. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. Kite flying west of Surfside Beach is acceptable; for safety reasons, please do not fly kites east of Surfside toward the airport. Due to the number of people who frequent Surfside Beach during the day, it is inadvisable to fly kites during the peak beachgoing hours. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers, public phones, food service. Shuttle service from town to Surfside Beach is available seasonally.

Fisherman’s Beach: Located between Surfside Beach and Nobadeer. No parking; Beach access via steep wooden steps. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Nobadeer: Located near the airport. Limited parking; difficult to access beach. Plenty of surf, wide beach is good for picnics, beach games, and surfcasting. No lifeguard; no facilities.

Madequecham: Land Bank property at the end of Madequecham Valley Road; rough sand road. Parking. No facilities; no lifeguards. Rip current can be strong; heavy surf.

Tom Nevers (“Pebble Beach“): Surf can be heavy; very coarse sand. No lifeguard; no facilities. Good for fishing. Strong rip currents; heavy surf. Access to the beach can be difficult.

WESTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Madaket: As far west as you can go, six-mile bike ride on scenic, paved bike path, or take the shuttle bus. Heavy surf, lifeguard, restrooms. Famous for its incredible sunsets.

EASTERN SHORE - OCEAN BEACHES

Siasconset: Regular shuttle bus service or seven-mile ride on paved bike path. Surf can be heavy; lifeguard. Food available in nearby village of ’Sconset. Low Beach: 4WD access. Surf can be heavy; no lifeguard.

BAY & POND BEACHES

Miacomet Pond: Fresh water pond, nantucket-ma.gov/hab for algae updates. Pocomo Beach: Great for kayaking and to learn to windsurf. Just west of the Head of the Harbor. Good for children. No lifeguards, no facilities.

Eel Point: Good for fishing and watching the sunset. No lifeguard; no facilities. Limited parking. Rip currents can be strong.

Coskata-Coatue and Great Point: at the end of Wauwinet Road, past The Wauwinet Inn. Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge managed by Trustees of Reservations; beach sticker required for vehicles from Trustees of Reservations. Great for fishing and for seeing Great Point Lighthouse up close. Rolling dunes, bayberry, beach plum, heather, and beach grass. Salt marsh and maritime shrubland. The largest red cedar savanna and woodland in New England. Gray and harbor seals. Public restrooms available at the lighthouse Memorial Day-Columbus Day. Sections of the refuge are sometimes closed to protect nesting shorebirds. Dogs permitted only from Sept. 16 thru March 31 and must be leashed at all times. Sesachacha Pond: off Polpis Road. Great for families; warm water; no facilities; no lifeguard. Parking. Near the Audubon Sesachacha Heathlands and Wildlife Sanctuary. Check nantucket-ma.gov/hab for harmful algae bloom updates.

BEACH SAFETY

•Learn to swim. If you can’t swim an overhead stroke for at least 15 minutes you should not be in the ocean. •Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, and swim near a lifeguard whenever possible. •Stay out of the “surf zone” where the waves break at the shoreline. Waves are at their greatest force here, and even a small wave can lift you up and throw you headfirst into the sand. •Never run from the beach into the water and dive headfirst into the waves. Sandbars that cannot be seen from the surface may be present and/or the water may be too shallow. •Don’t jump or dive into the water from a pier or rock jetty. From a pier or jetty, water appears much deeper than it really is. What looks like 10 or 20 feet of water may only be 2 to 3 feet deep. Diving in could be fatal. The same applies for jumping headfirst into the ocean or a wave from a surfboard – don’t do it! It’s not a risk worth taking. •If you are body surfing or boogie boarding, always keep your arms out in front of you to protect your head and neck. •A rip current will pull you away from the shore, but it will not pull you under. If you’re caught in a rip current, do not swim toward the shore! Instead, swim parallel to the shore, until you’re out of the rip current. Then, swim in to shore. •Never drink alcohol or use drugs at the beach. It clouds your ability to make wise decisions, and that could be fatal! •Take direction from lifeguards at all times.

Captain Fred Tonkin is an experienced fisherman and will provide you with all the equipment for up to six people to fish at one time. He takes four 2-1/2-hour trips a day: 7 am, 10 am, 1 pm and 4 pm, and the fishing starts just 15 minutes from the dock. The HERBERT T is fully licensed and insured and is fully equipped electronically. While you’re on Nantucket, do as the islanders do - catch some blues! $150 per person (minimum of 2 people). Founded in 1968 as the first museum in America dedicated to honoring volunteer and professional lifesavers, the NANTUCKET SHIPWRECK & LIFESAVING MUSEUM preserves the heroic stories of Islanders who risked their lives to rescue mariners in peril at sea. These stories span from the early Massachusetts Humane Society through the U.S. Life-Saving Service and into the modern U.S. Coast Guard. Each year, NANTUCKET PRESERVATION TRUST looks forward to their Annual August Fête as a celebration of the architectural heritage they work to preserve and their incredible supporters who help make that work possible. In 2026, the NPT Annual August Fête will be held in Sconset. Tour classic beach cottages steps from the Atlantic, then enjoy an elegant reception at the ‘Sconset Casino. For more than a quarter century, this popular contest has been a fun way for residents and visitor to share their images of Nantucket Island. Any season, any view, any time period (we love the old photos), serious or silly are accepted, as long as the photo was taken on Nantucket. You might even win one of the cash prizes.

Winning photos and many deserving honorable mention will be shared with our readers in our Autumn Edition of Yesterday’s Island/Today’s Nantucket, which hits the stands on September 24, 2026. They will also be posted on Nantucket.net and on YesterdaysIsland.com after the print edition is published. The 2025 winners and entries can be viewed now at yesterdaysisland.com/photo-contest
