There are many sources of informa琀on about real estate on Nantucket and we are pleased to offer this consolidated guide that addresses the most common ques琀ons asked by buyers.
About the Nantucket Associa琀on of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB)
NAREB was founded in the mid 1980’s by the few principal brokers opera琀ng on Nantucket at that 琀me. They felt that the island community would be be琀er served by having an organiza琀on of real estate professionals who worked in a coopera琀ve manner, had consistent standards and shared informa琀on.
Founding members included local real estate legends Grace Coffin, Marjorie Colley, Hammie Heard, Ann Killen and H. Flint Ranney. In the early years, before the advent of computers and the internet, the organiza琀on had fewer than a dozen members and no mul琀ple lis琀ng service. Mee琀ngs were held in the back room at the historic Jared Coffin House and lis琀ngs were simply adver琀sed in the local newspapers. Today, there are more than 50 NAREB member firms comprised of brokers, sales associates and associate appraisers.
In addi琀on to engaging LINK Nantucket, our own mul琀ple lis琀ng service, NAREB produces a highquality color publica琀on called Nantucket Home Magazine, oversees professional standards and offers con琀nuing educa琀on for our members, volunteers in the community and supports many of Nantucket’s nonprofit organiza琀ons. The majority of NAREB members live and work on Nantucket yearround and serve the community in many ways, including giving of their 琀me to commi琀ee and volunteer work. Our members are professional, informed and are the consummate resource for informa琀on on everything related to Nantucket. We encourage all to respect our local tradi琀ons and rules and regula琀ons. Enhancing Your Nantucket Home with Art

Your home is more than walls and furniture: it is a reflection of who you are, what you have lived, and what moves you. Yet for many people, the idea of filling that space with art feels out of reach, reserved for those with formal training or an instinct they worry they simply don't possess. The truth is, collecting and displaying art is one of the most personal and rewarding things you can do for your home, and it doesn't require an art history degree or a gallery budget to get it right. Whether you are drawn to a seascape that captures the particular greyblue of your favorite beach on an October morning, a new work by an artist you discovered at an island gallery, or a sculpture that stopped you in your tracks at an open studio, the art you choose tells your story — and with a few guiding principles, you can display it in a way that makes every room come alive.
Nantucket's thriving art community makes finding the perfect pieces for your home both more accessible and can make the decision of which to choose even harder. Expert guidance can be the key. This is where the services of Nantucket’s Art Purveyor Robert Foster can be indispensable. For this issue of Nantucket HOME, we asked Foster to give readers his perspective on adding art to a home.
When assisting clients, he often suggests that they consider what they are attracted to first. Then I ask, “will this enhance your space?” It may be decorative, and it may symbolize something very personal to you, or it simply could just be visually appealing. But asking yourself these three questions could save you time and money in the future. Art of any medium can enhance a space and set a mood. It can also serve like fashion choices in clothing, and highlight and reflect your personal style. Art is very personal and should be enjoyed as
the collector or the viewer. It should not be intimidating and should be an enjoyable experience. A professional art purveyor provides expert guidance in navigating the art market, helping to insure you secure highquality pieces. Their skills will assist you in building cohesive collections and may often have access to offmarket and new works. In addition, they often can advise on or even handle practical and very important aspects like correct installation and insurance.
When considering placing artwork into your space, consider all mediums, from twodimensional to three dimensional. Your walls could be considered “real estate” for placement of twodimensional artwork and a great way for display. But easels are another interesting way to display artwork. An easel adds an architectural element to the room and allows for more space for more artwork on the walls. Shelves, tables, and mantles are another great way to display smaller works without filling your wall space and utilizing that “real estate” for other artwork or decorative design elements.
When considering threedimensional work like sculpture, don’t be intimidated. Collectors often feel they don’t have the space and the pedestal to properly display sculpture, and shy away. Your home is not a traditional gallery or museum—it is a living, functional space, so those rules do not necessarily apply. Depending on size, sculpture can be placed in a corner to soften that space, it can be placed on a table, shelf and mantle. Mobiles and construc tions are another wonderful choice to collect. They can add color, texture and an architectural interest, in addition to the other artwork and design elements in the space.

At Children’s Beach, the Town will organize live music, face painting for children, a decorated bike parade, and traditional games. Details for the daytime events will be finalized by midJune. work. One of my favorite places I have seen a client place sculpture is on the bathtub ledge. When I was a practicing artist, one of my collectors told me she had placed my piece in her bathroom. At first, as the artist, I felt slighted and that the artwork was being hidden. Then she explained why she chose that space—she found that the amount of time spent in those spaces can allowed her quiet, lengthy moments to be with the artwork—I never again felt slighted by that placement. I actually share this with my clients when they are considering placement of artwork. However, works on paper should never be placed there unless professionally and properly framed.
Dimensions of art is another thing to consider when placing work in a space. The size of the room, the size of the furniture, and the placement and size of the windows, can guide and should be considered to prevent the space from feeling too heavy or overdone, some might say “cluttered.” Large, open spaces can handle larger works better, and the viewer can properly experience the artwork as intended. But again, it is a personal choice, and I have seen some large artwork in smaller to medium sized spaces that actually created an incredible “living in it” experience. A grouping of smaller works on a larger wall can be a great way to display a lot of work and create a fun story. Also diptychs or even triptychs can be considered to fill a larger wall space.
Balancing all elements in a room—from furniture to decoratives to artwork—creates harmony within a space and sets the mood. Simple conversations with a professional can help educate on collecting and placing artwork. I often begin with questions such as, “What type or style of art do you prefer?” or “What mediums do you like?” and often “What is your price range?” Answering you want to purchase and collect artwork that you can live with for a long time.
Remember, artwork can serve as a primary piece that sets the tone of the space, it can be an accent, and/or it can be a little surprise as an eye scans the room. In any case, enhancing the lifestyle of the owner is key. Have you ever visited someone and walked into a space and immediately felt joy and excitement from their choices for that space? From being tantalized by the colors, the textures, and the tone set by their choices; art can form a story and gives the space its voice.
Combining existing artwork and design elements with your new purchases can be a challenge, but when done correctly is very satisfying. Incorporating your choices and stories of the past with the present, creates a nostalgic, heartwarming stamp on that space. I love the stories behind artwork. Not just the creator’s story but your story as the collector. Where, when, and why? The “provenance” and what attracts you to specific pieces is part of its story, as well as yours. And if properly done, the story the space itself emulates. There are no mistakes in choosing and placing artwork. As long as it is your personal choice and style, and for your enjoyment in your own space. What could be wrong about that? Keep it fun, don’t be intimidated.
