Main Street Corridor Committee meets, plans BY CAROL BROOKS FREELANCE WRITER cab1hp@gmail.com

What could Main Street in Jamestown look like in the future? What can be done to attract not only shoppers but businesses as well? Do you envision trees, a roundabout at Guilford Road, a lower speed limit? That was the topic of the Main Street Corridor Study Steering Committee project kickoff meeting Aug. 27. Led by Adam Fischer and Travis Cook, project manager and deputy project manager respectively with Stantec. The purpose was to align the Town and consultants on goals, scope, decision-making, data needs, engagement, schedule, deliverables and immediate next steps.

Committee members include Alison Falls, Susan Stringer, Andrew Edmonds of the HPMPO, Planning Technician Gordon Holton, Councilmember Jim Westmoreland, Public Services Director Paul Blanchard, Town Manager Matthew Johnson and Planning Director José Colón. The study was approved in March of this year but a similar study also was done in 2020-21 by Jamestown’s Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee. Some committee members were also on an earlier Main Street Corridor Committee. Similar plans were the 2010 Pedestrian Plan, 2022 Bicycle Pedestrian Committee and 2023 Vision Comprehensive Plan. The corridor study encompasses both sides

of East and West Main Street, from Teague Drive (including Jamestown United Methodist Church) to properties at the intersection with Ragsdale Road. Fischer planned to go over several agenda topics but committee members began discussion without looking at his agenda. Agenda topics included: Project Purpose, Background & Measures of Success: Scope of Work & Deliverable Expectations; Existing Conditions, Data, & Field Review; Stakeholder & Public Engagement Strategy; Technical Approach & Alternatives Development; Schedule, Milestones & Quality Control; and Immediate Next Steps. “This is something to further identify James-

town,” Fischer said. Cook noted when he came into town from Raleigh and crossed the railroad, he knew he was in Jamestown. “Jamestown is quaint,” he added. There are several obstacles to Main Street planning, including the downhill slant, lack of trees and parking for visitors and shoppers. “There is plenty of parking but people won’t walk,” said Susan Stringer of The Soap Lady. She mentioned the two curves in the street that often obstruct motorists’ views of pedestrians crossing at those points. Fischer said the town would need to educate people where the parking is located. SEE STREET, PAGE 2

Murder in Grandover COMPILED BY NORMA B. DENNIS FRIDAY NIGHT KINDERGARTEN LIGHTS The Ragsdale High School Friday night football game on Aug. 28 was truly a night of celebration. The first class in the school’s newly established Hall of Fame was introduced. They included Bill Clarke, Coach Brian Braswell, Coach Tommy Norwood, Coach Andy Chappell, Coach Mike Raybon, Jacob Creed, Jesse Creed, Kathy Dick, Mark Dixon, Toney Baker, Prince Deese, Shorty Rickman, Siri Mullinix and Rickey Adams. The graduating class of 2039 was also recognized. All kindergarteners from Millis Road Elementary School and their families received free tickets for the night’s game. Before kickoff, the students were able to warm up with the football team, meet the cheerleaders and marching band and run through the tunnel with the team. The idea for Kindergarten Night was a way to begin building connections among students and get families excited about being future Tigers. FUN ON THE FARM A Moment In Time celebration on Sept. 15 is all about the farm as participants enjoy special music by Alan Teichman and Molly Stoutman. There also will be lots of “Down on the Farm” activities to highlight the month’s theme. SEE ABOUT TOWN, PAGE 6

Most days, the Grandover neighborhood adjacent to Jamestown is a nice, quiet upscale neighborhood with two golf courses. But gunfire recently erupted on a calm evening resulting in the death of two residents. Greensboro police responded to 15 Creswell Court Aug. 23 around 6:45 p.m. Police discovered the body of Kathryn Binkley of the home and a seriously-injured Margaret Collins. Collins died the next day of her injuries. The women were friends and were talking in Binkley’s front yard. Michael Wade Hargett, Collins’ neighbor, was charged with the murders. After a standoff and negotiations, Hargett, who had barricaded himself in his house, was taken into custody. He was treated at a

Hargett was charged with first-degree murder. He had received a misdemeanor domestic violence in June. That charge was dismissed in July. He also had a violation of a previous domestic violence protective order. No motive for the shootings was given.

It is an icon along Hwy. 68 near Oak Ridge in Guilford County. The historic Old Mill of Guilford (or Bailes’ Old Mill) has stood on that site since 1822. The grist mill is powered by an overshot wheel, painted red like the building’s trim. For 50 of those 204 years,

Jamestown’s Annie Laura Perdue has worked at the grist mill, most of them as manager and 19 of those as miller with owners Amy and Darrell Klug, who purchased the mill in 2008. Perdue recently retired. (See Jamestown News Aug. 19, 2026.) But now the mill has new owners – but they are probably familiar to the mill’s patrons. SEE MILL, PAGE 2

Support for cancer patients is as close as Cancer GPS BY NORMA B. DENNIS FREELANCE WRITER ndworddesign@gmail.com

When Carol Kerr had the idea to create a walk to benefit Parkinson’s research in memory of John “Bulldog” Hamil, a fellow church member at Jamestown Presbyterian Church who dealt with Parkinson’s for six years, it is not likely she envisioned how far that Photos courtesy of www.hkcfoundationforparkinsons.org idea would go. Now, the PD Gatherings offer exercise, activities and an opporwalk that started in 2006 on tunity to connect with others who face the challengthe track at Ragsdale High es of Parkinson’s. School has grown into a challenge featuring a walk, run and bicycle fundraiser to benefit local Parkinson’s patients, as well as provide free monthly support meetings and quarterly gatherings. The next gathering, which includes those with Parkinson’s and their care partners, will be held Oct. 17 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m at Jamestown SEE GATHERING, PAGE 6

Preece checkers Zero Sugar Coke 400 at Daytona BY RUSSELL SCHMIDT RACIN' WITH RUSS While creating a must win situation, Ryan Preece certainly rose to the occasion in the closing laps to win the wreck filled event, marking his first ever Cup win! Akin to the O’Reilly Auto Parts race winner Ryan Sieg with a 424 winless race streak being broken the day before, Preece shortened that idea a bit to record 249 Cup starts without a win until Saturday night in Daytona, Fla. (Editor’s note: Preece won The Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium in early February but it does not count towards the Chase since it is an exhibition race.) Under ideal weather and track conditions, the NASCAR Cup field took the green flag behind pole sitter Ross Chastain with Kyle Larson and Chris Buescher close behind. After the field spread out, Shane van Gisbergen led briefly before an on-track scuffle brought out the first yellow. Larson, Buescher and Preece were all involved, but able to rejoin the field after brief repairs. That wrapped up the first stage with SVG surviving the chaos to win the stage in front of Ty Gibbs and Joey Logano. Moving forward, the next 60 laps saw leaders SVG, Austin Hill, Chase Briscoe, Chase Elliott, Austin Cindric and Ryan Blaney share a handful of laps as Blaney claimed the stage win. As the laps wound down, Carson Hocevar made a left hand turn in the middle of the pack, drifted up the track and into Erik Jones leaving both cars done for the day. Zane Smith was left to lead the pack before Preece moved to claim the top spot and his first Cup win! Several of the top guns of the such as Blaney, Larson, Gibbs and Smith dropped down the running order after the last wreck leaving drivers such as Blaney dropped from running third to 33rd!

Capping the top five finishers included runner-up Daniel Suarez, Tyler Reddick, Michael McDowell. The most up to date points standings has Denny Hamlin still on top but with the overall points reset, now leads by only 25 over Blaney and 35 over Reddick.

Finally! Sieg wins Winn-Dixie 250 After 424 attempts to win an O’Reilly Auto Parts feature, veteran racer Ryan Sieg came away with the big trophy! The very happy winner was surrounded by crew and fans as he exited the race car in the winner’s circle with help from brother racer Kyle, as they pushed the car in. The race came down to a drag race to the finish line with Austin Hill and Carson Kvapil in hot pursuit. Sieg only led the final two laps, but that’s all that was necessary to re-write the record books. At the start of the Winn-Dixie 250, Rajah Caruth grabbed the pole yet it was Sheldon Creed leading the opening circle before Caruth, Kvapil, Jesse Love and Sam Mayer all led a handful. By the end of the stage, Hill took the green and white checkers ahead of Kvapil and Caruth. Stage 2 saw more action as two multi-car incidents involving the likes of Sammy Smith, Corey Day, William Sawalich and Anthony Alfredo. Smith and Day were done and the others made repairs and rejoined the field. Caruth, Kvapil and Hill continued to lead laps as Caruth earned his latest stage win ahead of Alfredo and Kvapil. The final and longest stage found Kvapil leading from lap 67, but Ryan Sieg stepped up and into the plate to barely edge Hill and Kvapil at the stripe for his very first O’Reilly Series win! Rounding out the top five finishers included Alfredo and Brandon Jones.

torical mill running the same way and maintain its character. They had two other offers pending and a surge of interest earlier this year following a Triad Business Journal feature story, but ultimately decided the Pynes would be the best fit. “We felt they were hard workers,” Amy said. “They had a real passion for the mill. It just kind of all came into place. They have children they hope to work at the mill and expose them to owning a small business and that experience, and that’s the same thing we did.” On the Old Mill’s Facebook page, the Klugs posted on Aug. 21, “Thank you for your support, kindness, and friendship! After 18 years, we are passing the mill to new owners who will keep the business running, the high-quality products, and historical integrity of the site. It has been a privilege and honor to be part of the history of the Old Mill of Guilford and the Oak Ridge Community. Please welcome and support Mady and Caden Pyne as new owners of the Mill. You are in good hands!” Although the Mill is over

CONTINUED FROM FRONT 200 years old, it still grinds grain for tourists, locals and restaurants nationwide. It is featured on the Town of Oak Ridge’s seal. The Pynes are the eighth owners of the mill. It was originally built by Daniel Dillon at another location in 1767 on nearby Beaver Creek and was reportedly seized by British troops prior to the Battle of Guilford Courthouse to grind grain. It is among the oldest operating grist mills in the United States. Several of Dillon’s descendants have visited the mill and shared their memories on the mill’s Facebook page. The Pynes will continue to operate the popular store where grain ground onsite is sold on bags featuring whole wheat pastry flour, apple cinnamon biscuit or pancake mix, dried apples, gingerbread mix, bean soup mix, several styles of biscuits, buckwheat flour, bran and corn muffin mixes, grits, hushpuppy mix, high gluten wheat flour, muesli and much more. The Old Mill of Guilford is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Stantec has scheduled a two-day charette Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 for the public to voice their thoughts. A charette is “an intense, collaborative workshop where a multidisciplinary group of designers, planners and stakeholders work together to solve a complex planning or design problem.” After the meeting, ideas and feedback will be analyzed and refined by Stantec and brought back to the committee for input. Stakeholders include JUMC, emergency services, restaurants, businesses, etc. along the targeted area. Subcommittees of these groups are planned. Cook is preparing an online survey to gather feedback from residents. It will be put on the Town’s website, https://jamestown-nc.gov, when completed. The survey is not only looking for input from businesses along Main Street, according to Colón. Jamestown residents and those passing through town also use Main Street and their comments are welcome. “The purpose of this thing is ‘What are we going to do,’” he said. “This is narrowing down a lot of ideas.” “There’s a lot we can do without tearing out curbs and the street,” Cook said. “We could re-mark or re-design the street,” Fischer said. “There’s a good start already with brick sidewalks, street lights, crosswalks.” No physical work will be done until the Main Street water line is replaced this year. North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will need to be involved in the transformation since Main Street is a state highway. Councilmember Westmoreland remarked that group has become more receptive to ideas. Fischer regretted not having NCDOT represented at the Aug. 27 meeting. Stantec’s website describes the company as “sustainable engineering, architecture and environmental consulting. Reimaging the resilience starts with the heart of the community. Together we turn ‘what if’ into ‘we did.’ With every community, we redefine what’s possible.”

FROM THE FRONT GPS

CONTINUED FROM FRONT Winnett, program director who oversees survivorship, and Mike Jones, director of mentorship, shared information about Cancer GPS – what it is, what it does and how it helps – with members of the Jamestown Rotary Club on Aug. 25. Cancer treatment is more than a physical issue and GPS addresses the whole person from physical to emotional, social, spiritual and financial. Monthly meetings covering educational topics and special social events meet the needs of survivors, patients, caregivers and community members that have been affected by cancer. All programs include a meal and are complimentary. A monthly newsletter keeps patients and survivors informed of the various activities. Winnett displayed several items demonstrating the

challenges cancer patients face – a calendar to help track their many appointments, tissues for their emotions, a decorated rock reflecting the hard journey they encounter, a paper heart showing the love of family, friends and others who have gone through the same journey, money indicating financial difficulties and a medicine bottle representing treatment. She explained that during a treatment patients could use VRelax, a virtual reality program designed to offer a variety of experiences that transport patients away from the stress of the moment, helping reduce anxiety. Mentorship can also play an important part in recovery throughout cancer’s detour journey. Jones, a paraplegic due to an accident and a three-

heal people. Even those who finish treatment can still face challenges and GPS continues to be there for survivors. Because patients and survivors may have questions at random times, “Ask Bernie,” an Al program, provides online answers and support 24/7. There is a nominal fee for the monthly subscription service, but scholarships are available. Countless lives have been touched by Cancer GPS through the many volunteers/mentors who, among other things, share their journey and offer room support during chemotherapy; the monthly programs and special patient appreciation days; and the more than 20 community partners who support the program. The organization is in the process of developing ways to

find more affordable medications and aid in innovative research for better patient outcomes. At the end of the program, the Jamestown Rotarians made a donation to Cancer GPS to help support the work it does. “I personally learned a lot of new information that I had never considered before,” said Rotarian Michael Greth. “My biggest takeaway was that the actual surgery treatment for cancer is the least of the challenges one will face with that diagnosis. The necessary support, the resources, the empathy and obviously the financial burdens that cancer surgery can place on individuals are also part of it.” Indeed, cancer’s detour can be long and difficult but as Rotarians learned, Cancer GPS is available to offer support and guidance for each segment of it.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A change that you hoped for is on its way. But you still need to be patient until more explanations are forthcoming. Continue to keep your enthusiasm in check. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your social life expands as new friends come into your life. But while you’re having fun, your practical side also sees some positive business potential within your new circle. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your workplace situation continues to improve. Look for advantages that you might’ve missed while all the changes were going on around you. A trusted colleague can help. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Resist the urge to hunker down in your bunker until things ease up. Instead, get rid of a woe-is-me attitude by getting up and getting out to meet old friends — and make new ones! LEO (July 23 to August 22)

Now that you’re back enjoying the spotlight again, you should feel reenergized and ready to take on the challenge of bringing your big, bold plans to completion. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A former friend would like to repair a relationship that you two once enjoyed. Your positive response could have an equally positive impact on your life. This could be a good time to tackle any bothersome situations that you’ve avoided both at home and at work. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You feel obligated to return a favor. (Of course, you do.) But heed advice from those closest to you and do nothing until you’re certain about what’s being asked of you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your loving reassurance helped revive a once-moribund relationship. But be wary of someone who might try to do something negative to reverse this positive turn of events. Couch Theatre BY DEMI TAVERAS “Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu” (PG13) — Sometimes a film can have a notable director such as Jon Favreau (“The Lion King”), popular lead stars like Pedro Pascal (“Fantastic 4: The First Steps”) and Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”), and even a score composed by an Oscar winner like Ludwig Goransson (“The Odyssey”) — and still not meet box-office expectations! It certainly didn’t meet Disney’s, as it was the lowest-grossing live-action “Star Wars” film of all time. Celebrate Labor Day with a late-summer mezze board BY PATTI DIAMOND DIVAS ON A DIME Labor Day weekend is summer’s grand finale, the last big bash before we begin pretending we are ready for sweaters, schedules and pumpkin-spiced everything. Let’s make a late-summer mezze board: a relaxed Mediterranean-style feast of smoky vegetables, creamy dips, warm pita and salty little nibbles. It looks lavish, but its principal players — beans, bread and seasonal produce — are happily inexpensive. And because Labor Day is supposed to be a holiday free from labor, nearly everything can be prepared ahead and the board assembled with fresh, no-cook ingredients. The secret here is restraint. Otherwise, what starts as a casual graze board becomes 17 tiny bowls and a grocery receipt requiring smelling salts. Build your board around a few contrasting elements: grilled zucchini, sweet peppers and red onion; baba ghanoush and hummus; sliced cucumber and tomatoes; olives, feta and toasted pita wedges. Fill any gaps with pepperoncini, grapes, watermelon, fresh herbs or whatever looks delicious and reasonably priced. Arrange everything in generous, overlapping piles. Mezze should look invitingly abundant. The smoky centerpiece is baba ghanoush, a creamy eggplant dip with variations found throughout the Middle East and Mediterranean. Grill the egg-

liquid. Transfer to a bowl and mash with a fork. Stir in the tahini, lemon juice and zest, garlic, yogurt, salt, pepper, sumac and Aleppo pepper. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Spoon into a shallow bowl, drizzle with olive oil and garnish with parsley. Serve with pita and vegetables. Refrigerate leftovers for up to four days. Prepare the dip a day ahead, grill the vegetables at the same time, and add fresh produce and herbs shortly before serving. For outdoor gatherings, bring out smaller portions of dips and cheese as needed. Perishable foods should not remain unrefrigerated longer than two hours, or one hour when the temperature exceeds 90 F. To turn the board into dinner, keep the grill working and add chicken or pork kabobs, sausages or a steak cut into bitesize pieces, an economical way to share steak with a crowd. Round out the meal with herbed couscous or lemony orzo, both inexpensive and delicious served at room temperature. Then gather everyone around, pour something cold and toast the last long, golden days of summer. They deserve a proper farewell. Presbyterian Church. “It is a special 20-year celebration,” said Alesia Pendleton, who, along with her husband Mike, organizes the yearly fundraiser challenge. “We have invited members of the Hamil and Kerr families and women from the Bible study group that helped Carol organize the first walk. There will be a lunch, resource fair showcasing what we have to offer, raffle and door prizes. I plan to have a slide show with some of the pictures taken during the past 20 years.” Sponsors and partners of the Hamil-Kerr Challenge also will be recognized at the October event. Jennifer Johnson, Mike Pendleton’s sister and a board member of the organization, is excited about the special 20-year celebration. “I used to volunteer for the annual events, but since I moved back to Greensboro I have joined the board,” she said. “It is a way to give back to people in our community and it fills my cup to volunteer.” Kerr originally organized the event after she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. “So many people I have met have or know someone with Parkinson’s,” Kerr said in an early interview. “It strikes people from all walks of life. The average age when people are identified with Parkinson’s is 60, but I was just 50 when I found out I had it.” Kerr later learned she had Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). The original event was designed to raise money for both Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and PSP research. Kerr contacted numer-

ous national Parkinson’s associations for advice. The Parkinson’s Unity Walk was the most helpful. By working under its umbrella, Kerr was able to obtain insurance, a tax-exempt number, brochures and registration forms to use as guidelines for the John Hamil Walk. The goal the first year was to raise $5,000 but the 150-plus walkers collected over $17,000. Within two years, the event had grown so big it added a cycling element. The start was moved to Jamestown Presbyterian Church, which provided parking, walking trails and the first cookout for participants. After outgrowing that space, it traveled west to High Point City Lake Park. When Kerr passed away in 2012, board members of the 501 (c)(3) non-profit decided to change the name of the event to the HamilKerr Challenge. Their goal also changed from contributing to research to focus on people in the community with Parkinson’s. The 2026 Hamil-Kerr Challenge, which was held in April, raised $60,000. “That was an all-time record,” Pendleton said. Funds raised provide for the monthly care partner support meetings and quarterly gatherings that include lunch, exercise sessions for those with Parkinson’s, networking for their families and special programs featuring educational topics. The funds, along with money raised from grants that Pendleton writes, also provide fitness classes including ACT Foremost in Fitness, Powell Strength & Conditioning, HKC Parkinsen’s Fitness Zoom Class,

Parkinson’s patients and their care partners who wish to attend the Oct. 17 PD Gathering may register for the event by calling 336-365-2745 or online at hkcfoundationforparkinsons. org. Pendleton suggests that those who want to participate in the 2027 Hamil-Kerr Challenge, which will be held April 17 at High Point City Lake Park, save the date on their calendar now so it will already be a priority.

HKC Strength Zoom Class and One-on-one Home Training. Cycling classes are offered at High Point YWCA and Ragsdale and Spears YMCA. Boxing sessions can be found at Rock Steady Boxing in Greensboro, Archdale, Asheboro and Lexington. Dance and music are incorporated into the fitness regiment with Hilary’s PD Dance Class at PurEnergy Greensboro and with Magnolia Music Therapy. With a doctor’s recommendation, people with Parkinson’s may participate in the LSVT BIG program. Conducted by a physical and occupational therapist, the program deals with bigger movements of the body, i.e., taking bigger steps and using louder voices. Each case of Parkinson’s can be different so patients may use the type of therapy that best fits their needs. Although exercise does not cure Parkinson’s, it does provide temporary relief from symptoms associated with it. “Movement is medicine for anyone,” Pendleton said. “Our motto is ‘Empowering People to Move.’”
